Customer Reviews:
ITIL process makes sense........2007-09-28
ITIL is hardly new, but it is surprising how many professionals in Service Management have never heard of it. I leanred of it from a colleague, and did some research. It is more or less a common sense approach to service management and delivery. What it reall does is force the IT professional to view IT in a customer business needs and expectations sense as opposed to an IT provider sense. I found this text easy to read and well laid out. The mock exam in the back is an interesting way to drive home major points, but the book itself is useful not just for people who want to pass the Foundations certification, but to those who want to view service management and delivery in a more process centric manner. I also purchased the study guide for Foundations by Ron Palmer that gives a very good conversational explanation of ITIL and fills in gaps the offical text does not.
Essential for Passing Foundation Exam.......2007-03-23
I purchased this book with the sole purpose of using it as a study guide to pass the ITIL Foundation exam, and did exactly that. The book has a consistent structure, covering the required areas of Service Delivery and Service Support functions. The price is slightly high, but from looking around, this appears to be the defacto study guide for learning the ITIL Foundation material. Highly recommended.
Excellent book to understand the ITIL basics.......2007-01-09
Excellent book to understand the ITIL basics and to clear the foundation certification. I would recommend this if your objective is to clear the certification in a short span of time. There are other books available if you want to read every process in detail.
Expensive Overview.......2006-12-30
It's a fine overview of ITIL & excellent preparation for the foundation exam. But $50 was a bit pricey (even if my boss didn't complain).
Excellent reference.......2006-11-11
I just finished the ITIL Foundation Certification class (still awaiting test results) and this book was used for teaching. The book is more clear and concise than the older version which a coworker has. Since I am in charge of one of the ITIL processes at work and wasn't familiar with the "Seperation of Duties" I really needed this book. I will use this book and knowledge gained from the class in order to Implement the process.

Book Description
<>Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) is a new Microsoft technology for allowing software to communicate. Superseding earlier technologies, such as COM/DCOM, .NET Remoting, ASP.NET Web Services, and the Web Services Enhancements for .NET, WCF provides a single solution that is designed to always be the best way to exchange data among software entities. It also provides the infrastructure for developing the next generation of Web services, with support for the WS-* family of specifications, and a new serialization system for enhanced performance. For information technology professionals, WCF supplies an impressive array of administration tools that enterprises and software vendors can use to reduce the cost of ownership of their solutions without writing a single line of code. Most important, WCF finally delivers on the long-postponed promise of model-driven software development with the new software factory approach, by which one can iteratively design solutions in a modeling language and generate executables from lower-level class libraries.
Windows Communication Foundation Unleashed is designed to be the best resource for software developers and architects working with WCF. The book guides readers toward a conceptual understanding of all the facilities of WCF and provides step-by-step guides to applying the technology to practical problems.
- Introduces you to WCF and then takes you deep inside the technology
- Gives you nearly 100 best practices for programming with WCF
- Provides detailed coverage on how to version services that you will not find anywhere else
- Delves into using WCF together with Windows Workflow Foundation and Windows CardSpace
- Provides detailed coverage of the new high-performance data contract serializer for .NET
- Walks you through how to do secure, reliable, transacted messaging, and how to understand the options available
- Introduces you to federated, claims-based security, and shows you how to incorporate SAML and WS-Trust security token services into your architecture
- Provides step-by-step instructions for how to customize every aspect of WCF
- Shows you how to add your own behaviors, communication channels, message encoders, and transports
- Gives you options for implementing publish/subscribe solutions
- Walks you through how to do peer-to-peer communications with WCF
As evangelists at Microsoft for WCF, Craig McMurtry, Marc Mercuri, Nigel Watling, and Matt Winkler are uniquely positioned to write this book. They had access to the product as it was being built and to the development team itself. Their work with enterprises and outside software vendors has given them insight into how others see the software, how they want to apply it, and the challenges they face in doing so.

Sample does not work.......2007-07-18
Code sample provided does not work. The author doesn't seem to know the difference between a client and host! No source code is provided in a cd or by download.
In-depth, comprehensive and complete.......2007-06-27
I haven't finished the entire thing (about 200 pages to go), but so far it has covered up to the most obscure detail you might need to know. I must admit, however, WPF has an incredibly steep learning curve and some of its features are terribly counter-intuitve, but it is an amazing technology. The book shows you the power of the technology with great examples and explanations of the details you thought you knew.
Excellent coverage of the technology!.......2007-05-19
Between the WPF Unleashed book and this one I am thoroughly impressed by the quality of this series. This book is easy to read with in depth information, very relevant. It covers a lot of useful techniques: in particular security, customization and integration with WF. A real step ahead of the other books. A Must have for all serious WCF programmer.
Excellent book for WCF!!!.......2007-05-04
I would definitely recommend this book for someone who is new to WCF and is looking to learn WCF in-depth.
Also if you want to learn Cardspace this is THE book I would say :)
I liked the way the Federated security was explained.
Craig has done a marvellous job!!!
Must read for comprehensive WCF knowledge.......2007-04-10
This book is a must read for anyone wanting to learn WCF in-depth. The coverage of topics is comprehensive and the authors have a very lucid style that makes the material very easy to understand.

Making complex issues clear.......2004-12-24
This book has been a real life saver for me on my first semester at graduate school. The other media books I had to read were overwhelming with never ending details and jargon language. Roberts- Breslin's book explains everything plainly from start to finish. She has an uncanny ability to simplify extremely complex matters. Even with no prior knowledge of the technical aspects of media making I now have a solid foundation.
The main terms are bolded, and also listed in the end so you can read the book beginning to end or just look up specific topics. The attached CD is a great addition as it visually illustrates concepts that are difficult to explain verbally, such as the different camera movement (What is the difference between the pan and truck movement?) or the phi phenomenon.
Another great thing about the book is the practical tips it gives to a beginner. Logging all my footage, for example, would have never accrued to me, but it made editing so much more manageable and must have saved me hours upon hours.

Book Description
Updated with modern coverage, a streamlined presentation, and an excellent CD-ROM, this fifth edition achieves a balance between theory and application. Author Charles H. Roth, Jr. carefully presents the theory that is necessary for understanding the fundamental concepts of logic design while not overwhelming students with the mathematics of switching theory. Divided into 20 easy-to-grasp study units, the book covers such fundamental concepts as Boolean algebra, logic gates design, flip-flops, and state machines. By combining flip-flops with networks of logic gates, students will learn to design counters, adders, sequence detectors, and simple digital systems. After covering the basics, this text presents modern design techniques using programmable logic devices and the VHDL hardware description language.

College Text.......2007-05-15
I bought this book for my college class. I don't have it until this summer. It comes with a disk with two programs for programming digital logic.
Now that I have used the book it is good for logic but lacked in use at design. We supplemented with the Wiley book that was good. But Schaums outline was better then both texts. I would buy Digital Pricipals and rent the book if posible.
Great Self Study Guide.......2006-10-21
I grade the first 20 chapters an A ... the remainder: a C+
This book is a great intro to logic design. Read it with John W Carters : Digital Design with Programmable Logic Devices ... to clear up state machine/synchronous binary
counter issues. And to get experience with real world design issues.
Background comments.......2005-06-18
A few comments concerning the material and Dr. Roth. I had the pleasure of using the book while it was still being 'student tested' prior to publication back in the 1970s, and found the course so interesting that I proctored it the following semester. My background prior to taking what was at the time a senior level EE course included no EE whatsoever. The material was well-organized and presented in a consistent pedagogical manner that I find rare in technical textbooks.
I had the pleasure of taking courses with Dr. Roth, and wish to emphasize that he has a very strong interest in effective teaching, and in learning how to make learning more efficient. I found that, as a result, I was both challenged and inspired by one of the best university level instructors I have ever had.
I will also state that I have self-studied topics on numerous occasions, and I have found that 'programmed learning' is one of the most effective teaching methods yet devised.
I have not seen the current edition of 'Fundamentals', but based on my experience with the book since its infancy and my personal knowledge of Dr. Roth's abilities and interest in teaching this material, I would expect the book to be an excellent learning tool.
New Fifth Edition correct flaws.......2004-08-02
I reviewed the Fourth edition before, but have now revised that review to reflect major improvements in the new edition.
This is a learn-by-example style of text. Not only are examples given in the body text, but the first end-of-chapter problems are worked out in detail, and solutions are given for many more. I consider this a fine book for enriching the material I'm presenting in class.
The old edition was dated and promoted design styles that are not advised. The new edition fixes those problems and this is now a great text. Three chapters introducing VHDL have been added after the chapter sequences on combinatorial logic, sequential logic, and digital systems. Thus VHDL doesn't intefere with the teaching of the fundamentals, but serves to enhance by providing the modern practices. The chapters are not thorough enough for practicing design in VHDL but are a good introduction. Relatively modern components are now used in the practical examples. I don't think anyone will mind that the chapters on asynchronous state machine design are gone.
The new text comes with a CD containing a simple VHDL simulator (which I have not tested), SimuAid (also untested) and Professor Roth's venerable LogicAid -- a combinatorial logic synthesis tool which if nothing else provides a means that students can check their hand-made designs. People using this text in self-study would probably find the CD paricularly useful, although it has little value in school settings where professional software tools are available.
the best for excercises.......2002-11-23
i have been using both roth and mano for my digital design course at college and my experience is that roth is 'the' book for digital design.it is clear ,concise and to the point.mano seems to be a little too descriptive and sometimes drives you early to bed.however it is always good to refer to mano as for PLDs are concerned..
Book Description
Entity-relationship (E-R) diagrams are time-tested models for database development well-known for their usefulness in mapping out clear database designs. Also commonly known is how difficult it is to master them. With this comprehensive guide, database designers and developers can quickly learn all the ins and outs of E-R diagramming to become expert database designers. Because E-R diagrams are so fundamental to database design, this book is also an indispensable text for teaching computer science students the basics of database development. Database Design Using Entity-Relationship Diagrams clarifies E-R diagramming by defining it in terms of requirements (end user requests) and specifications (designer feedback to those requests). The book explains how open communication between designers and end users is critical to developing usable, easy-to-understand E-R diagrams that model both requirements and specifications. The authors explain, in an intuitive, informal manner, how to develop an E-R diagram, how to map it to a database, and how the resulting database can be tested. This definitive guide is a basic component for any database course, and is also an invaluable reference that database professionals can use throughout their careers. introbul>Features

Book Description
Foundations of Computer Science: From Data Manipulation to Theory of Computation successfully provides students with an overview of the many specializations within the field of computer science. Although many incoming freshman students are familiar with computers, they are often unaware of the broad field of computer science beyond the task of programming. Behrouz Forouzan has developed a five-part approach to introduce students to different aspects of the discipline without overwhelming them with technical detail. These topics include computer and data, computer hardware, computer software, data organization, and advanced topics. Throughout the book, Forouzan emphasizes the concept rather than the mathematical model, and difficult topics are supplemented with visual aids as needed to help students grasp concepts.

Don't waste your time.......2007-08-07
This is easily the worst technical book that I have ever read. To be fair I gave up after 55 pages and almost the same number of errors. Diagrams are missing pieces or labels, or are just incorrect. The examples are either too vague to make sense or are incomplete or wrong. After three chapters the author had rambled through such an abstract description of the VHDL that he explained nothing. Save your money and buy almost any other VHDL book.
Clear concepts in concise description.......2005-09-17
I have found the book so helpful after trying to find answers on line or from other VHDL books. It helped me greatly in understanding the concepts, some times assisted by the just in-time figures.
For example the concept of 'delayed(T) signal attribute has been clearly explained and even illustrated with a Figure. We can not only use the signal to assign another one, but also more importantly we can "check for relationships between the current value of the signal and an older value of the same signal". This has helped me to understand some professional VHDL programs.
The author must be such a knowledgeable professor who can teach the concepts so clearly as well. Thanks for the book!
Overall, good book for begineers........2003-06-19
had to buy this book for subject at uni. The arena of VHDL, digital logic, synthesis, simulation and FPGA's is a broad subject and it can be hard to know where to start and where to find the right information. Overall I found the book to be a good introductory text and reference but with a few small annoying features.
This book is definitely at the begineer's level. The really good feature of this book is the focus on synthesis of VHDL code. If you are learning VHDL from what vendors publish and what is on the internet you may not find what you need. Chapter 7 especially will fill in the missing pieces and give you a good idea of what is going on with things such as synthesis compiliers. Haven't seen any other texts that explain that kind of thing.
Some items that let the book down for me was that it seemed to be riddled with textual errors. Numerous times there seemed to be words missing from sentences, which really interrupts the flow of learning. The other part that was frustrating was that the tone the author took seemed to be like an adult talking to a baby.
However, he proves his point and I can understand the motivation for doing so, as VHDL is not a normal programming language.
The book covers FPGA's (indirectly) and the author shows to reference elements in an FPGA if needed, whilst still sticking to the whole VHDL theme. That is something that I found good.
Something I believe that would have been helpful would be having the simulation software on the CD, with an appendix overview of what is going on with those tools.
If you are an undergraduate, new to VHDL and are new to using EDA software like Xilinx and don't quite follow everything, then this book will get you going quickstart. It can help save you alot of potential time being wasted.

Book Description
Deal with information and uncertainty properly and efficiently using tools emerging from generalized information theory
Uncertainty and Information: Foundations of Generalized Information Theory contains comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of results that have emerged from a research program begun by the author in the early 1990s under the name "generalized information theory" (GIT). This ongoing research program aims to develop a formal mathematical treatment of the interrelated concepts of uncertainty and information in all their varieties. In GIT, as in classical information theory, uncertainty (predictive, retrodictive, diagnostic, prescriptive, and the like) is viewed as a manifestation of information deficiency, while information is viewed as anything capable of reducing the uncertainty. A broad conceptual framework for GIT is obtained by expanding the formalized language of classical set theory to include more expressive formalized languages based on fuzzy sets of various types, and by expanding classical theory of additive measures to include more expressive non-additive measures of various types.
This landmark book examines each of several theories for dealing with particular types of uncertainty at the following four levels:
* Mathematical formalization of the conceived type of uncertainty
* Calculus for manipulating this particular type of uncertainty
* Justifiable ways of measuring the amount of uncertainty in any situation formalizable in the theory
* Methodological aspects of the theory
With extensive use of examples and illustrations to clarify complex material and demonstrate practical applications, generous historical and bibliographical notes, end-of-chapter exercises to test readers' newfound knowledge, glossaries, and an Instructor's Manual, this is an excellent graduate-level textbook, as well as an outstanding reference for researchers and practitioners who deal with the various problems involving uncertainty and information. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.
Download Description
The principle aim of this book is to provide readers with a comprehensive and in-depth overview of GIT research to create a unified framework of the technology'sdiverse uncertainty theories. Through the use of examples and exercises, the author discusses probability theory, fuzzy set theory, evidence theory and possibility theory.
