Not for beginners and not for professionals.......2007-05-03
It is hard to tell who this book is geared towards. A novice should not take on any event that is as over their head; as most of the event situations that are listed in the book are. A professional would know from experience the answers to most of the questions or they would have the common sense to take care of any odd situation that arose. The book may be helpful to assistant managers or banquet captains, but most houses have their own way of doing things. Interesting read and a good refresher, buy used.
Very useful Hand Book.......2007-03-10
It was very useful to me as I used it to brak into the wedding/event business. It presents a very corporate approach, yet it seems to uncover all kinds of secrets of the event world that are hidden to the public eye.
This Book is Alright.......2006-08-09
Being an avid reader of Event Planning literature, I must say that this book is alright.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2005-10-14
Details, details, details. That's really what successful event planning is all about, and that's the key to this very successful event-planning manual. Author Judy Allen notes, lists, copes with and gives an example of virtually every detail in planning anything from a sedate corporate event in a major city to a huge celebration on a remote island. She provides examples galore plus tips, questions and answers, sample cost sheets and schedules. How much floor space does a person need to be comfortable in a tent? Answer: 20 square feet. How many bathrooms should be available for a party? Answer: One per 75 guests. And don't forget to ask about the stemware, adequate parking and even the photographer's back-up camera battery. This author seems to have thought every contingency, as the book's ambitious title promises. Her one glaring omission is that she does not include the party planner's fee - our guess is that she'd be worth it. We highly recommend this well-organized, very practical book to all event planners. Don't send out press releases for your party without consulting Judy Allen.
Great book.......2005-10-01
This is a great book for anyone interested in working in the event planning field.

Good book although it is written like a textbook.......2007-08-23
I just graduated from college and am thinking of pursuing a career in Event Planning. I ordered this book to learn more about the subject only to find that it was another textbook! With that being said, it is a good book still. Some of the administrative information is pretty basic but I find the artistic design elements that are weaved throughout the text to be rather interesting. It is as good book to get acquainted with the industry, just expect it to be written like a textbook.
Excellent.......2007-03-20
This book is perfect for people interested in handling the design aspect of events. It gives you breakdowns, provides ideas, discusses how you set rates, has sample forms/contracts, and even sections that question you and make you think. I was so excited while waiting for this book to arrive and I certainly wasn't disappointed. I give this book 5 stars and would absolutely encourage others interested in event design to buy this book!

Excellent Event Planning "How To".......2007-09-13
It's all here. For the person just starting out, this book is a must have. For those who have been in the business for a long time, the book is still a great resource.
New Class Textbook.......2007-09-02
I have always been a disciple of Julia Silvers' work. This book will serve in 2008 as the textbook for my new class entitled "Everything about Events". I am delighted with the robust information available throughout this book.
Book Description
Everyone would rather have someone else plan and conduct events like fairs, fashion shows, conferences and weddings. That someone else is often the professional event planner, a person who knows how to design an event, and do the myriad things needed to bring it off successfully.

Tiny Book, Huge Value.......2007-10-18
This book is incredibly informitve, yet conscise enough to read in an afternoon. It has targeted, well documented information and succeedes in giving you a good overview of the industry and the steps you need to take to break into it. There are a few editing errors, as mentioned by another reviewer, but the strength of the content overshadows this minor inconvenience. I reference my copy constantly.
Could have been better. . ........2007-07-02
This book does have a lot of general information about the event planning industry. It also give the reader a lot of information from industry heavy hitters. This book is unfornately not for a person who is familiar with or has worked in the industry and are looking to branch out on their own. It is also not a strong suit for those interested in staying more on the social side of event planning. Most of the resources and examples (contracts etc.) are geared to those who are planning large scale events where the customer will be giving you all the money to spend as needed. Overall the authors did their best to tackle such a lofty subject in so few pages. I just don't think they were as sucessful as they could have been.
Informative.......2007-04-10
Informative simply written and easy to understand for the beginner. Has tips, forms and checklists.
Editing Problems.......2007-04-07
This book is very informative, but some of the information boxes are missing the wording. It cuts off some of the words, so the information is incomplete and makes it hard to follow what is going on.
I want to know who to contact in order to get a better edited copy of this book. I have almost completed reading it, but I would have liked to have received a correctly edited copy of the book that I paid for.
Thank you for listening.

Very Helpful.......2006-03-25
This book was very helpful to me as someone who really doesn't have any event planning training, but is looking to start. It had light humorous moments which made it more enjoyable to read. I also loved the side comments. All in all, I would say anyone looking to work in this field should read this book. It will come in very handy and you can read it over and over again.

Great book to have in the Library.......2007-09-13
If the term exists, you'll find it here. A must have in an event planner's library.
Book Description
Making Documentary Films and Reality Videos is the perfect text for students of filmmaking who would like to make a documentary. Barry Hampe, who has made more than 150 documentary films and videos, traces the two main approaches to documentary--recording behavior and re-creating past events-and shows students how to do both effectively. Covering all the steps, from conceptualization to completion, the book includes chapters on visual evidence; documentary ethics; why reality is not enough; budgeting; and casting, crew, and equipment selection.
Customer Reviews:
not the best guide .......2007-10-19
this really isn't the best guide for documentary filmmaking. especially if your goal is to create an independent project. i wanted a "step 1, step 2. step 3..." guide. this was not it. also, the author's bias is toward behavioral documentaries, for profit.
Great Introductory Book.......2007-03-31
I took a two week documentary filmmaking course recently and this book was our text. The majority of the class had no prior experience with making a movie of any sort so this book became our life. I felt it was very easy to comprehend and gave ALOT of great advice. For those who did have experience in filmmaking, which included shooting, editing, and distrubution, this was a refresher for them. Overall I'd say it was a great reference book to rely on.
More like "documentaries for dummies"........2007-01-05
If you have absolutely no experience whatsoever in writing to tell a story, filmaking, photojournalism, videography or communicating in any significant way, this book will be helpful if you're suddenly called upon to produce a documentary film or video.
The advice given here is very basic and really doesn't have all that much to do with making a documentary. For example, Hampe describes the roles of the people who might be found on a typical documentary crew, such as the scriptwriter and camera operator. In sum, this is really a book that describes the entire process of creating a documentary from coming up with an idea, capitalizing it, putting a crew together and so on. It really is for someone who has absolutely no experience whatsoever - and while there are many people who may dream of making a documentary, this book will not provide them with the experience they actually need.
The book is also increasingly outdated. Almost all of the technology Hampe describes for lighting, capturing images and sound, editing has been superceded.
The good thing about the book is that it is thorough: Hampe really does cover every step. But its odd that a book on documentary and reality video creation has not a single illustration. Very strange. Another thing in Hampe's favor is his writing style. Except for way too much patting himself on the back for his own work, Hampe writes in a clear manner.
Overall, this is a quick read and useful to those who have no experience whatsoever with the film making process, but have dreams of making documentaries. This book will not really teach you anything about actually making a documentary, but it does an okay job of describing the process.

good book.......2006-08-24
great book for his main points regarding the style and elements one should have in the documentary, mostly revolvong around the point of not having too many 'talking head' interviews and 'showing' the point more,,, the book isn't relevant at all regarding technologies, however, as it seems to be written before 1998 or so,,, but it's probably helpful to see everything from the past,,,
overall a great book, i think, for someone like me who is just starting out and doesn't know where to begin,, this book definitely has given me a great idea of the directions i want to be heading in,
A very helpful introduction to the world of documentaries.......2006-07-03
I found this book extremely useful and does as it claims-- covers all aspects of documentary production. Although written intially before NLE, it has adequately been updated to cover NLE. I found the planning part very useful but had to make my own notes to organize the author's thoughts. Otherwise would have deserved 4 stars.

Great Book for all Levels of Event Planners.......2007-07-05
This book is a fount of knowledge. Its simple to read and easy to follow. I thought it would be a person spouting about how great they are and not alot of practical information. But I was wrong. This book is helpful in many ways: for the beginner it provides a practical guideline to get started; for the intermediate planner it provides further ways to improve what they have begun; and for the advanced planner it hones their skills with the latest ideas and information.
For myself as an advanced even planner, it confirms that I am right on track with the trend for event planning. The CD with the forms and such are very useful and easy to customize for each planner or event.
I have already recommended this book to a large organization to use to train other event planners!
Event Planning made easy.......2007-04-11
This is a great high level overview of event planning. I am still looking for a reference with more detailed checklists and events of a more civic nature. But it was great to get the accompanying CD to use to start making your own checklists. And a great way to see all the possible areas that could be involved with planning events, especially large ones.
Very informative.......2007-04-09
Having to plan an event? First time or old pros needing a refresher go no further than this book. Shannon Kilkenny has outdone herself here with step by step instructions and tips to walk you through the whole process of planning and executing even the most difficult event you've ever faced. I found the charts, lists and forms both in the text and the copies on the CD ROM for easy print out to be the most beneficial.
I think the best thing about this book is that you can take away something from reading the whole book cover to cover. But you can also take away information from individual chapters if the whole book doesn't apply to you. The best example of this I can give is that my mother was panicked last week over trying to plan my little sister's 16th birthday. I told mom that while I'd only read this book last week for a friends baby shower that I thought she might want to take a peek at it. When I came over the day before my sister's party to help with setup my mom said that the book had more than paid for itself. It had shown her a much less stressful way to do what she was trying to do. She said that she skipped the chapters aimed at event planners but that a lot of the later chapters helped her immensely in avoiding disaster or over planning for the party. This is a definite read for anyone trying to plan an event from the smallest birthday party to a large banquet or conference.
If you want the depth, Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning is the item of choice........2007-04-07
If a reference to planning events is needed you can't do better than Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning, a pick for planners and public libraries alike. Here's all the basics for planning all kinds of events, from seminars, receptions, weddings, dances, reunions and retreats. From money-saving tips and identifying and reaching target markets to choosing dates and designing events, it covers all aspects from budget to set-up and beyond. A few other guides cover this topic lightly - if you want the depth, Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning is the item of choice.
An Inspirational Guide To Success! .......2007-03-26
I've planned successful corporate Christmas parties, software user group conferences, non-profit fundraisers, weddings, church gatherings, and awards banquets but I found new ways to enhance my services and make the processes flow more smoothly when I read "The Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning".
Shannon Kilkenny provides comprehensive planning guidelines in a way that stimulates further brainstorming and creativity. She teaches you how to easily and systematically envision, create and run a fantastic event that will be memorable for all of the participants, enjoyable for the planner, and profitable when appropriate.
I particularly liked her advice on "greening" your event. Providing organic meals and other environmentally friendly offerings sends a positive message to participants, the community and potential clients. People want to hire event planners who are responsible people. What better way to demonstrate and promote your services than to host an event that is appealing, well-run and certified as environmentally sound?
This book does an excellent job of guiding you through the process of planning a successful event and is a must have for anyone who may be called upon to coordinate a gathering.
