5 out of 5 stars Great Text.......2007-05-12

Great text for learning image processing and using it with MATLAB. Hopefully the instructor also uses its mathematical insight as well.

5 out of 5 stars Superb instructional book for my needs.......2006-04-10

I bought this book for two reasons (a) I needed an overview of IP and (b) I wanted to examine different pattern analysis algorithms with a practical twist. On both counts, as an non-IP researcher, I was very satisfied. The book is very well laid out, so well in fact that it would put to shame many of its rivals. It served my needs. I can't comment on whether it will meet the needs of a broader community. I would certainly recommend it based on my experience.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful.......2006-01-11

This book educates the reader in image processing and MATLAB. While I am experienced in both, I found the book to be an extrememly useful reference book for projects involving image compression and image representation. The book offered practical descriptions and useful code for computing the fast wavelet transform. It was especially useful in describing how the edges should treated. This is a big issue that other textbooks gloss over. I had never seen it described in a textbook, and it was described so well.

The color image processing chapter is excellent, and the image processing chapter is pretty good. Lots of explanation and code.

While the book stands alone, it can also be seen as a useful companion book to the more theoretical "Digital Imaging Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods (2nd edition). This is a different book even though it has close to the same name.

5 out of 5 stars The best of its kind........2005-01-02

If you want to get up to speed on Matlab and plan to use it for image processing, this book is a must.

I have lots of experience in computer graphics and in programming languages like C++ and C#, but prior to reading this book I had never really used Matlab nor implemented complicated image processing algorithms. This book is a great introduction to both.

The book is divided in twelve chapters touching both low-level image processing (e.g. spatial filtering) and higher-level concepts required for computer vision, like image registration and segmentation. Gonzalez et al are talented writers, explaining relatively complicated concepts clearly and concisely, without getting lost in the mathematical details. People interested in the more theoretical aspects should (and probably already have) check their other book.

The only potential downside of this book is that it's definitely designed to be read sequentially, one chapter at a time. The matlab concepts are introduced piece by piece. For example, if you skip Chapter 5 (on image restoration, i.e. getting rid of noise) you may not realize that you missed the introduction to the image registration functions. Personally I liked this style (it added variety to a potentially dry subject), but a reader with less time to cover all of the matter may find this to be a problem.

5 out of 5 stars Digital image processing using MATLAB.......2004-09-02

I gave a DIP class last semester using this book. I found it provided the easiest way to make students acquainted with DIP. Before using this book, I tried Visual C++ for implementation. However, both of us (i.e., students and me) couldn't be satisfied, I guess. Now the implementation is easier than ever, and I can explain more about DIP itself to students.

For more than two decades, futures traders have turned to the classic Trading Systems and Methods for complete information about the latest, most successful indicators, programs, algorithms, and systems. Perry Kaufman, a leading futures expert highly respected for his years of experience in research and trading, has thoroughly updated this bestselling guide, adding more systems, more methods, and extensive risk analysis to keep this the most comprehensive and instructional book on trading systems today. His detailed, hands-on manual offers a complete analysis, using a systematic approach with in-depth explanations of each technique. This edition also includes a CD-ROM that contains the TradeStation EasyLanguage program, Excel spreadsheets, and Fortran programs that appear in the book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent material in 4th edition.......2007-05-12

Similar to many traders who own Perry Kaufman's 3rd edition of New Trading Systems and Methods, I ignored the publication of the 4th edition. Well, such oversight was my loss. Even a quick perusal of the work reveals a wealth of new ideas, techniques, and concepts. Kaufman offers ample inspiration for exploring trading problems in a new light.

Kaufman's encyclopedic coverage is unique. The 3rd edition contains 700 plus dense, fast paced material. The current edition adds another 500 pages of new and revised material. Each topic is examined with care; Kaufman has an ability to focus on the key concepts and omit the fluff. His presentation assumes a sophisticated, intelligent reader with solid software development, testing, and trading skills. Sloppy readers, clumsy testers, undisciplined `traders' will complain that this is not a `trading war stories book'--such complaints are correct; this is a trading SYSTEMS and METHODS handbook.

The book binding has a problem. At 1,200 pages, the adhesive binding is falling apart. This book requires either sewn through or over-sewn type binding. Shame on John Wiley for such embarrassing production quality!

3 out of 5 stars Might interest a mathematician.......2007-04-28

I've only gotten about a third to halfway thru the book as I can't see what the author's purpose is, whether laboring thru the rest would benefit me or not. It reads like a college level textbook of the mathematics behind technical analysis. Boring. In what I read, the author worked thru proof formulas to get to more elaborate indicators. In so doing, sometimes he explained what his formula's symbols meant and sometimes not. I sure don't want to go back thru the book to see if I can find an earlier description of what the symbols mean should I ever want to use one of the new formulas. Then he compared some of the new trend followers like standard deviation against olders ones like moving average and point and figure and behold none are really better than the others. When I get stranded on a tropical isle and am bored to tears, I will page thru the rest of it.

5 out of 5 stars The only book I can depend on for clear system trading information........2007-01-27

After buying a large number of highly recommended trading books (including the books referred to in these reviews), this is the only book that I can depend on to clearly explain in technical detail almost any aspect of system trading that I need information on. This book is well written, comprehensive, and approaches subjects in an objective manner. It doesn't tell you how to trade, but clearly describes the different system trading strategies and indicators, their advantages and disadvantages, and practical considerations. This is a must for those developing rule based and automated trading systems.

5 out of 5 stars What more could you ask for in a book???.......2006-10-02

Trading is serious business, although you wouldn't think so, considering the way many people approach it.

The fundamental truth about all types of markets is that the minority gets the money, and keeps it. Of course, there will be times where the market trends strongly in one direction (usually up), and the masses confuse a bull market for brains. But those who are serious about earning profits, and keeping them, need to develop a method or philosophy to separate their thoughts and actions to act independently from the crowd.

If there were college level courses in financial speculation, Kauffman's book would be the required text. All sorts of twists on trend following, counter trend strategies, technical indicators, statistical methods, as well as various charting techniques, are all described. I should also add, the book comes with a CD that enables you to test various methods described in the book using Excel spreadsheets. The spreadsheets are already set up, you just need to input the data.

Some reviewers say that all of the methods are "bad." I'd disagree. This book is a valuable reference, and when you understand the logic of what has come before, you can adapt it to current market conditions. There are a surprisingly large, but finite, number of ways to slice and dice market data. But there are an infinite number of ways to combine a few them into a robust trading system.

5 out of 5 stars Solid technical analysis book.......2006-08-02

This book is worth the money. The author presents solid explanations on the use of technical indicators and statistical calculations of the market. He guides you step by step in order to understand the specific applications and use of technical analysis and use of mathematical calculations applied to the financial markets. The depth of research and examples is very broad and extensive, plus the examples of the actual programming code in order to create your own trading systems is very helpful. Recommended by MTA to complete the CMT course.

Book Description

Dashboards have become popular in recent years as uniquely powerful tools for communicating important information at a glance. Although dashboards are potentially powerful, this potential is rarely realized. The greatest display technology in the world won't solve this if you fail to use effective visual design. And if a dashboard fails to tell you precisely what you need to know in an instant, you'll never use it, even if it's filled with cute gauges, meters, and traffic lights. Don't let your investment in dashboard technology go to waste.

This book will teach you the visual design skills you need to create dashboards that communicate clearly, rapidly, and compellingly. Information Dashboard Design will explain how to:

Stephen Few has over 20 years of experience as an IT innovator, consultant, and educator. As Principal of the consultancy Perceptual Edge, Stephen focuses on data visualization for analyzing and communicating quantitative business information. He provides consulting and training services, speaks frequently at conferences, and teaches in the MBA program at the University of California in Berkeley. He is also the author of Show Me the Numbers: Designing Tables and Graphs to Enlighten. Visit his website at www.perceptualedge.com.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Buy this Book!.......2007-09-12

This book is great, it gets to the point, tells you what you need to know, provides many examples and is entertaining at the same time. The people who are still fascinated by all the colors in their kids Crayola boxes probably would object to some of Few's points.

1 out of 5 stars Over-raed approach to stern looking dashboards.......2007-09-03

The key elements of dashboard design (avoid clutter, focus and limit visual cues, beware of rainbow colors, carefully chose when to show numbers, tables or (appropriate) graphs), converted in a very lengthy and expensive piece of litterature. And the results is by all accounts debatable in terms of look and feel, in particular as very little attention is given to who your audience is...
I would not recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Another Tech Book Killed by Frills and Filler .......2007-09-02

There can be no doubt that the pages of this book contain some of the most original and decisive ideas about dashboard design of any book to come out on the market. Yet this strength cannot quite redeem it. This book is mostly pictures, figures, and graphs, many of which are not needed. The same could be said of dashboards in general. The prose is watered down and childlike, as if the author would spoon feed his ideas, one per chapter, to an infant audience. In the end I am forced to conclude that, like many tech books in HCI, a hard core text filled with complex ideas, lean, well-written chapters, and something like wit is both outside the reach of its authors and outside the bounds of contemporary techie marketing. This book may sell, but it does nothing to promote a sophisticated, confident HCI core at a time when awareness of the profession is still patchy. It will be a great day for HCI when its "Gurus" stop condescending to their audience.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Treatment of the Material.......2007-08-17

This is an easy to read book which does a fantastic job of conveying the topic material. I strongly agree with Few's perspective and think that you wouldn't go wrong with a design that's in alignment with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great design principles.......2007-08-08

This manual is a great resource for best practices and principles for designing dashboards. It doesn't matter if you buy or build, the material is golden.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Instruction Material for Beginner Coders and Billers.......2007-04-10

Medical coding and billing continuously evolve in large part because insurance companies and providers have conflicting business goals. An effective biller must go beyond simple claim submission and discover the reasons for underpayments and denials, to solicit missing information from both providers and payers, and follow up on every claim until its full payment. Rowell's and Green's Guide provides an ideal introductory didactic set of materials covering everything from history of health care reimbursement, major insurance companies, and federal health care legislation, to basic knowledge of national diagnosis and procedure coding rules, to complex topics, such as V-codes, and diagnosis code linking. The text is replete with examples and exercises, helping students understand and remember the needed materials.

This book is fanastic and provides up-to-date information on the health insurance industry. Its great for learners and old timers too. Gives a very broad spectrum of the health industry and easy to comprehend. I recommend this book to anyone as a teaching/learning tool.

The book presents a really useful range of techniques structured in an appropriate sequence that builds skills. The overall quality of the book is very good. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond nuts and bolts.......2007-03-21

This is not just another "how to" book it goes beyond the technical to cover the why of editing. The author uses actual feature film footage to convey the decision process for the art of editing.

5 out of 5 stars highly recommended! more than a how-to manual. .......2007-02-17

This extraordinary book/dvd set is much more than a simple "how-to" manual. And, in its own way, it's all really more than a book on editing. It really addresses the entire film making process, albeit from the POV of an editor. Possibly it is most valuable in its emphasis on tone and genre. The exercises are truly instructive, in every sense of the word. My own method of getting through the lessons was to read the chapter all the way through, first. Then go back, at the computer, with the footage loaded and follow, step-by-step. One word of warning - this really is an advanced program. I don't suggest getting this book as a primer for first time users. Get it if you already have some proficiency with the basics of FCP. Otherwise I think it'll be a bit overwhelming. For me, this way actually better than sitting in a classroom learning from a live teacher (something I've done, as well). Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2007-02-15

I haven't exactly read this book yet, but I do own one and love it. It's so helpful. If anyone is interested in editing these are great books to read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Training for FCP Certification.......2006-07-19

It is great to have a project ready to start editing on a moments notice and really provides some valuable working experience that will help you with a real job. Enjoy! This book is great resource for intermediate editors who wish to start the journey to be an advanced Final Cut Pro. I have enjoyed the entire Apple Training Series, the only thing I don't like about them is that it seems that a new book with a lot of similar material will come out every year depending on the FC studio releases.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the price.......2007-10-19

Third photoshop book (slow learner) I have purchased and is as good or better than others. Easy to follow if you follow the precise directions. Video on disc that comes with it really helps as it previews the lessons in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Decent book for beginners, but buggy with Vista.......2007-10-19

Because I could not get the DVD lessons to work on my computer, I have only read the first lesson, so please keep that in mind while assessing my review.

Despite a major effort, I could not get the primary function of the DVD -- the lessons -- to perform using MS Windows Vista (Home Premium). So, for Vista users, I would give this book 2 stars rather than 3. Because I could not use the entire panoply of teaching media, I can only speculate that I might give it 3 or even 4 stars for an XP (or other OS) user.

The video lectures on the DVD are not very good. They don't hurt anything but they were a waste of time for me. The writer/lecturer spends a lot of time hemming and hawing, and the presentation is generally quite slow and lacking good interactivity or "now do this" interactivity. (Again, there is a chance some of the later videos might be better, but these faults are basic and so I doubt it.)

As a comparison, Adobe has free online videos that move like lightning. (I have only used the CS3 version.) You have to stop the Adobe online videos frequently and watch them a number of times -- they move way faster than I can absorb information -- but at least you don't have to sit through an amateurish talking head rambling on about himself, the video, etc.

In summary, for me, the DVD was a total waste of time and money. In fact, it was a major pain in the neck. You are forced to spend time and brain power just learning how to use the book, installing the software, setting up your computer, etc., just to use it well enough to see if you like it. "How to use this book" is 14 pages long.

The book standing alone is competent and useful, but not great. Because there are so many pictures, large margins, large print, heavy paper, etc., the amount of content is limited. Still, as far as I could tell, it gets a beginner through a lot of the basics. Unlike some other reviewers, I found it satisfactory as a beginner. However, I was already competent in PaintShop Pro, so I may have had a head start.

The only mistakes I found were infrequent and very minor, dealing with changing notation for Windows OS. I suspect the author's primary computer (like many graphic artists) is an Apple Mac, and the commands are translated for Windows. This isn't really a drawback for a Windows user, but it leads me to suspect that the DVD may work more seamlessly on a Mac. (And if you are or want to be a graphic artist, you really might consider using an Apple computer.)

To me, the book is not comprehensive enough within the individual segments, even for a beginner. However, all the basic bases needed to use Photoshop are covered.

Edit: I have watched more lesson videos in the CS3 edition of this book. The later videos are very different from the first one; they get to the point without wasting time. At worst, they don't feel like a waste of time, and at best, they are helpful. (The CS3 edition also abandons auto-installation, which is a big help.)

The lesson files are very helpful to using the book. Especially for the beginner, they allow the reader to follow verbatim instructions to get a specific result, which would be a godsend to someone who was totally confused. So I feel that I would give this book "four stars" for someone who uses Windows XP (assuming that it installs correctly on XP!).

4 out of 5 stars Photoshop follow directions and try it........2007-09-14

This book I am using with a class I am taking. The instructions take a few chapters to get used to the writers style. The author covers a lot of good things that are very useful in photography as well as graphics. The only thing is the guy just can't take very good photos, but you can fix that, learn the basics from this book and take your'e own photo's! There is a lot to learn in this book to adapt to your own style! Go for it!!!

5 out of 5 stars The why of Photoshop.......2007-05-04

As a web designer whose strength is in coding and scripting, Photoshop has always seemed to be a cauldron of black magic to me. The knowledgible knew how to coax results from the tempermental pot, but we newbies were most likely to get burned. While Photoshop's unfriendly, counter-intuitive environment is partly to blame, a host of "follow this list of steps to make a button/background/fancy text/whatever without learning why these steps are necessary" tutorials - both on the web and in books - also share some of the responsibility.

Thankfully, McClelland's book more than makes up for the lax presentations of scores of wannabe Photoshop authors.

To get right to the point, One-on-One is an exercise in describing the why of Photoshop. While the book is filled with tutorials (a few per chapter), they all fit into a shared context. McClelland doesn't just tell the reader to slavishly follow his steps, but WHY they're necessary and WHY they work. He teaches the reader how to read a color historgram, why relying on Photoshop's auto image adjustment tools are only the first step in editing an image, even rudimentary color theory. I honestly learned more by reading the first chapter in this book then by struggling through a host of inane tutorials.

In short, One-on-One does it right. It's a must-have for any potential Photoshop user.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly useful.......2007-03-31

After a few unsatisfactory experiences, I was quite ready to admit the art of photography mending is beyond my capacities, and Deke McClelland's "Adobe Photoshop CS2" was in a way some "ultimate try" at the subject. After reading this book, I am aware of the fact I still have a lot to learn, but I am now confident I can reach some satisfactory level in using the powerful software Photoshop is.
In its step-by-step manner, this book is a masterpiece of pedagogy. The teaching, precise as well as relevant, is lavishly accompanied by superior illustrations. Without ever being overwhelmingly patronizing, it goes when necessary into precious details, all the time making sure the reader is able not only of acting the right way, but also of understanding why it is the right way.
If you are in need of learning how to use Photoshop CS2, this is the book for you.

Book Description

While the last version of iMovie gave moviemakers the ability to capture and edit widescreen High Definition Video (HDV) from the new generation of camcorders, iMovie 6 is all about the ease of moviemaking itself. iMovie 6 includes five professionally designed themes with backgrounds, motion graphics, titles, and effects that act as building blocks for your projects. You can preview transitions and stunning new video effects--such as time-lapse video--in real time using the full screen. Or edit audio and add sound effects with a new built-in sound studio. For presenting your movie, Magic iDVD offers easy-to-use themes, including new widescreen options.

Whether you're a professional or an amateur moviemaker, this is amazing stuff. But if you want to learn the full capabilities of these applications, Apple documentation won't make the cut. Instead, iMovie 6 & iDVD: The Missing Manual is the ideal third-party authority that covers all of these changes through an objective lens. This witty and entertaining guide from celebrated author David Pogue details every step of iMovie 6 and iDVD production. The book shows you how to:

From choosing and using a digital camcorder to burning the finished work onto DVDs, posting it online, or downloading it to an iPod, iMovie 6 & iDVD: The Missing Manual zooms right in on the details in a clear, concise, and understandable manner. The book also provides a firm grounding in basic film technique so that the quality of your video won't rely entirely on magic.

4 out of 5 stars iMovie 6 & iDVD: The missing Manual.......2007-10-03

Having Missing Manuals 3 to 5 It is again most difficult to find what's new in Apples Version 6 amongst all the older information contained in the previously published "Manuals". If one was purchasing it for the first time it does a reasonable job.

5 out of 5 stars Great Step by Step Guide.......2007-06-27

This book is a thoroughly attentive-to-detail manual that is true to it's name/concept: The manual that *should* have come in the box! It clearly walks you through every step, big and small as well as including sections on how to improve your filming, editing, and a concise Quicktime how-to.

I recommend reading the entire book before starting an iMovie/iDVD project but if you just can't wait (I couldn't-- I read as I went), I recommend reading Appendix B (pg. 461) which is "Troubleshooting" early on . It includes *many* crucial tips from being sure to format your external HD to Mac OS Extended (if saving on an ext. HD) to switching the factory-setting 12-bit audio on your digital video camera to 16-bit to common 'glitches' while importing, working with or exporting footage.

The other great benefit of this book is it explains the various little 'tricks' for more complicated tasks or for things that are hinky and need a little fiddling to work. One ex.: You use the new iMovie 6 themes w/in iMovie (Pass Through, especially, is slick/professional-looking!) and are trying to use a *trimmed* clip w/in the theme. iMovie doesn't understand starting it where you trimmed because it keeps the trimmed portion of the clip hidden but still there so the undesirable portion of your clip is shown in the intro theme instead. This book explains in detail how to save it to Quicktime and re-import the new *permanently* trimmed clip to use w/ no problems in your themed intro!

This book also spells out the key differences in iMovie 6 vs. previous versions. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are looking to edit home movie footage (or other) using iMovie (& iDVD) and don't have your own personal Mac Genius in your household. :-)

5 out of 5 stars This book saved my life... in a roundabout way.......2007-05-14

I recently purchased a Mac and edited my first film - a short documentary - on iMovie.

I had never used iMovie before and a good friend recommended this book and I couldn't have been more pleased. I haven't encountered a problem yet that this book hasn't addressed.

Well-written, simple and practical.

A great resource. Worth your time and money.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best "how to" manuals I've bought.......2007-04-19

I have to admit that I was skeptical when I saw that this was a textbook for an introductory filmmaking class but it's an awesome book. It strikes just the right tone and is basically a short course in filming, editing and distributing (dvd, web, email) movies. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply-THE BEST.......2007-04-03

Simple and darn articulate. Im not a tech person in any sense of the way, Mr Pogue has outdone himself. He indeed has made understanding imovie very simple. Highly recommended if you are just starting out or if you wish to brush up on the latest version of Imovie

I use this book as a textbook for an undergraduate course on Multimedia Application Development (together with Guzdial's book on Squeak).

It's a good book if you want to know about the way multimedia content is encoded and transmitted. It's not very deep but, as I mentioned, I use it for an undergraduate course...

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-09-27

one of the best computer books I've worked with. Very detailed about using ILife 06

5 out of 5 stars Mac iLife 06 is AWESOME!.......2007-07-26

This book is very well organized, easy to follow and a great reference to quickly find answers to your questions. It is much more helpful than the online tutorials. I highly recommend this as a reference to keep close by when working with any part of iLife.

5 out of 5 stars Indespensible accompaniment to your new Mac........2007-05-28

You have to have this book if you want to get the most out of your new Mac. If you don't have it, you can spend a lot more and pay for personal tutoring at the Mac store (assuming you have one available).

4 out of 5 stars I miss the DVD.......2007-05-13

I loved Jim Heid's iLife '05 book because of the integration with the included DVD. You could easily follow along in the book while Jim demonstrated each feature in the DVD and there were good cross-references. The '05 book was the best money I have EVER spent on a computer book. But iLife '06 doesn't include the DVD..... still a very good book but no longer so outstanding. I guess it just got to be too hard to produce a timely DVD with features being added to iLife and new versions coming out so fast. Too bad.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be.......2007-05-12

My friend kept telling me to get I life book, she had '05 and it had the CD with it, which she loved.
I dont feel this '06 goes into enough depth for me. Maybe my ignorance.... it is not able to keep me wanting to use it..

5 out of 5 stars An excellent color correction tutorial!.......2007-01-22

I have spent the last two years learning and improving my editing skills, but I have always been a little (a lot) intimidated and in the dark (no pun intended) when it came to color correction. I'm still working in FC Express, and thought that this book may be pointless, since Express lacks many of the tools discussed. But I started reading the color correction section today and have devoured every bit of it. Although I don't have the scopes to work with, I have really appreciated the clear, concise, methodical way that the book explains the concepts and procedures behind color correction. The subject is now demystified for me, and I feel confident in applying what I'm learning to the tools that are available in Express. I will eventually upgrade to Pro and purchase a monitor as well, and when I do, I'll be well prepared to take on the color correction process.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book with helpful hints and tips.......2006-03-22

Now I am an advanced Final Cut Pro user who has made a living with it for going on 5 years now, but still this book gives me new tips and tricks that I hadn't realized, and an excellent section on color correction which is really why I got the book in the first place.
