Customer Reviews:
Solid publication for DSS & IT Theory--Great research tool!.......2005-10-25
Not everyone will find this book as extremely useful as I did. The information contained within can be intimidating because of the sheer volume packed into its over 900 pages, but for someone wanting a foundation of Decision-support theory, this book should fulfill your need.
Each chapter provides an overview and a list of learning objectives that are adequately covered in greater detail. While theory lessons provide a necessary base for most students, this book successfully ties a "real-world" example to each chapter lesson that is not only relevant, but also includes associated links should the reader require more detail.
The book layout is fairly consistent with the more recent IT textbook publications that provide information with a short shelf-life (technological improvements being what they are today), but the illustrated concepts should be useful until the next revision is published.
The authors provide a wealth of references that are extremely useful for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge on any particular section or detail in the book. This provides a necessary trail for any research project.
The companion website (publisher) provides power point presentations that outline each chapter that were found useful for classroom utilization, however, a few details such as adding notes pages would have been greatly appreciated. Essentially, the material covered by these presentations proved more than adequate, although sometimes requiring a little digging in the textbook to provide enough detail (which I believe was the intent).
All in all this was an excellent book and a great research tool for anyone pursuing an education in IT.
Rambling book.......2005-10-18
This book could get away with about 2/3 the volume of content still be interesting. There really does not seem to be any structure to the way a chapter flows. Its easy to skim, but difficult to read.
Good case studies;
The connection with the web is a little over-emphasized and sometimes unclear. I'd prefer a dense read, with some concise messages.
This is a good course text, not a favorite though.
Purpose of the book: separate you from your money???.......2005-09-21
As far as I can tell the prupose of this book is to separate you from a great deal of your money!
It has a great deal to say about nothing. There is very little substantive detail on anything! Which, given it's size, really is quite amazing! This book will not teach you how to concretely implement any decision support system. It waffles on at a very distant level about such systems but never gets down in the trenches, if you know what I mean. It's basically why (though only just) rather than how! And for me, that makes this book a very pricey door jam.
Seriously, I was really underwhelmed and disappointed by the book. I ended up buying Statistics, Data Analysis and Decision Modeling by Evens and Olson (isbn: 0130783838) to find the information and practice that I need (decision modeling rather than decision support systems per se). It also comes with phstat software which is a VERY useful excel statistical add-in.
For example, from this book, p681-685 is genetic algorithms -> in 5 Pages!!!!! with nothing substantive about recombination, crossover, mutation, fitness or anythign like that (the terms are mentioned but not explained)...all it does is refer you sompleace else! Fuzzy logic gets 4 pages...with no implementation details. That is seriously ordinary!
So I suggest you save your money and look at something else. SOmehow I don't see this book giving anybody too much joy. It amazes me it has lasted through 7 edition. If the 7th is this bad...I'd hate to see the first edition!!! So, as I said before, more a book about why and where to go to get knowledge of how to do rather than giving you the know-how. SO look for a book on how! This is a book for discovering that terms like knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) actually exist...and maybe what it means (like say webopedia) but certainly not how to do it...
Excellent reference, thick college text.......2005-02-07
This is a textbook appropriate for a college-level course at the upper division or graduate level. It gives very thorough coverage of the entire field in one book, and most students really like the book in satisfaction questionnaires, but some feel overwhelmed until after the material is covered in class. I focus on specific chapters or sections of chapters for a single-semester course.
It is an excellent reference for key elements of DSS and related systems. I've followed it through several editions, and when new chapters are introduced, they may be verbose--but they are more focused in later editions. The authors do a good job of describing how computer-based systems support structured, semi-structured, and unstructured decisions and the design, intelligence, and choice framework. The book also has several good general chapters that provide an overview and describe different types of decision support systems. It includes sections on object-oriented systems and knowledge management (KM) systems. It is pretty theoretical and covers a lot of material, yet it's my favorite text for its purpose.
throw it into the trash.......2004-07-19
Used it for school, found it dry, boring, ugly. I got frustrated every time I picked up the book. Really want to throw it into the trash if not for the resell value.

Product Management (Mcgraw-Hill/Irwin Series in Marketing)
ASIN: 0899309127 |
Book Description
This book closes the gap between information technologies and management decision making. It treats currently relevant topics in information technology--knowledge-based expert systems, graphic-user interface, fuzzy logic, neural networks, data storage, client server, and integration of heterogeneous databases--by using examples and, more importantly, by relating these methods to the needs of the decision maker by taking into account the individual's decision style. The authors provide a solid basis for determining how decision makers use and access information that becomes part of the design of information systems. Integrating the decision maker into the design results in a more "intelligent information system" because the focus is on the outcome rather than on the methodology or computer power used.

Two Books, Same Content, Other One Is Better.......2000-08-15
These authors have also written a book titled "Seven Methods For Transforming Corporate Data Into Business Intelligence". The two books ("Intelligent Decision Support" and "Seven Methods") are virtually identical. They have the same content, the same graphics, the same layout, the same case studies. The basic content (first 202 of 250 pages) is word for word, page for page IDENTICAL. The ONLY diffference between the 2 books is that "Seven Methods" includes suggested solutions for the case studies (adding about 1 page for each of the 7 case studies. If this book ("Intelligent Decision Support Methods") appears to be of interest, buy "Seven Methods For Transforming Corporate Data Into Business Intelligence" instead. Do NOT buy "Intelligent Decision Support Methods". It is twice as expensive with no benefit.
Right content, right size, simple to undersdand book!.......2000-05-10
If you ever wondered what the field of Artificial Intelligence is and what it is useful for -- this book is for you! The book goes through a series of AI algorithms, such as neural networks and genetic algorithms, and describes in just the right level of detail how they work and where they can be applied. There isn't a single line of code in that book, yet the concepts behind the algorithms are crystal clear. I am a professional software developer and I did not mind this lack of code because the book gave me precisely what I wanted -- conceptual understanding of the issues involved and how applicable they are in the real world. I read the book from the first page to the last. It is only about 200 pages. Every single page seems to carry useful and simple to understand information. The summary table at the end of each chapter makes it easy to compare and contrast the algorithms. The authors seem very knowledgeable, yet they spare the reader the "tech talk". They are also quite realistic about what exactly can and cannot be applicable in business. This book is as much for business people as it is for techies. I would HIGHLY recommend this book!
This book may be a useful addition to the field........1999-07-25
The book has some useful examples, but they are lost in the appalingly poor writing and grammar. Have the writers completed high school?
Excellent book;right mix of technical and business perspecti.......1999-02-06
The book presents an excellent treatment of intelligent systems technology. It provides enough technial details in a non-technical language to help understand the technologies. In addition, the technologies are described within the context of business problems that they can help solve. By providing this very well balanced approach, this book fills an important need.
An excellent book for the business reader interested in intelligent technologies or a technologist interested in business applications. Also, serves well as an excellent textbook.
Excellent in-depth introduction to knowledge systems.......1999-01-27
This is an extremely clear, well written and well organized text on knowledge gathering systems. Written from a business perspective, it never loses sight of important operational and implementation issues applicable to any industry and treats technology as a mechanism, not as a end unto itself. Truly an excellent book.

Product Description
Research has shown that harassed decision makers in decision support technologies for real-time and uncertain decision problems, often ignore crucial information, use inefficient strategies, and generate fewer alternatives. Examples of such problems are such as medical emergencies, traffic flow and military applications. Despite significant research on decision making support, researchers are limited by a narrow understanding of the most effectual methods to support decision-making in real-time and stressful situations. These decision problems often require up-to-the-minute information, dynamic response and conflict resolution. Intelligent software agents offer one approach to operationalizing a decision making support system in these circumstances by providing an environment that can adapt to speed and change. Agent technology has been used to aid and automate complex problem solving such as brokering in electronic commerce and to produce information or knowledge such as financial services. While there are no agreed upon criteria for determining whether a program is a software agent, in general, agents act on behalf of someone. Thus, an agent is a software package that carries out tasks for others autonomously, with the others being human users, business processes, workflows or applications. In some ways, a software agent is just a software program. Broadly stated, to achieve common goals, agents need to communicate, coordinate and cooperate with both the human user and other agents. This book is concerned with intelligent agents that are embedded in decision support systems and used to mediate the decision making process.

Book Description
Multiple criteria decision-making research has developed rapidly and has become a main area of research for dealing with complex decision problems which require the consideration of multiple objectives or criteria. Over the past twenty years, numerous multiple criterion decision methods have been developed which are able to solve such problems. However, the selection of an appropriate method to solve a particular decision problem is today's problem for a decision support researcher and decision-maker.
Intelligent Strategies for Meta Multiple Criteria Decision-Making deals centrally with the problem of the numerous MCDM methods that can be applied to a decision problem. The book refers to this as a `meta decision problem', and it is this problem that the book analyzes. The author provides two strategies to help the decision-makers select and design an appropriate approach to a complex decision problem. Either of these strategies can be designed into a decision support system itself. One strategy is to use machine learning to design an MCDM method. This is accomplished by applying intelligent techniques, namely neural networks as a structure for approximating functions and evolutionary algorithms as universal learning methods. The other strategy is based on solving the meta decision problem interactively by selecting or designing a method suitable to the specific problem, for example, the constructing of a method from building blocks. This strategy leads to a concept of MCDM networks. Examples of this approach for a decision support system explain the possibilities of applying the elaborated techniques and their mutual interplay. The techniques outlined in the book can be used by researchers, students, and industry practitioners to better model and select appropriate methods for solving complex, multi-objective decision problems.
