4 out of 5 stars Great but needs some changes.......2007-06-14

This book may not cover all the topics in FICO but keeping in mind that there is no other product in the market which explains the functionality of FI and CO modules, one has to agree that this is the best book available on this subject.
I am not sure if the authors added any new material to this one in the last 2 years, but as far as my knowledge, this book did not cover "Asset accounting", "Profitability analysis" and "Product costing". But, for anybody who is planning to know the basic functionalities of these modules this is the best book to start with.
The screenshots do not matter a lot as no matter which version you are on , you can still figure out the changes and you can always find the screens and tabs as the transaction codes haven't changed.
It would be great if this book is revised and if the authors can explain the new general ledger structure released in ECC 6.0. There is not much stuff out there on this topic.

4 out of 5 stars A must have book for FICO consultant.......2007-06-02

It is a complete book on FICO configuration. It clearly articulates all the configuration steps required for FI and CO modules for an enterprise using a single company ,as an example, throughout the entire book.
A little background in accounting is needed before starting with this book. I refer the following book to starters, to get the basic knowledge on accounting.
THE ACCOUNTING GAME - Basic Accounting Fresh From the Lemonade Stand

5 out of 5 stars Configuring SAP R/3 FI/CO : The Essential Resource for Configuring the Financial and Controlling Modules.......2007-02-24

This book has a strong and effecient information on the subject, which is very finely explained the complexed and difficult issues in a simple language or grammer.. that is very helpful to grasp and grip the functions of the sap FiCo terminology and its tasks. it is quite interesting to read and impliment practically.

Configuring SAP R/3 FI/CO: The Essential Resource for Configuring the Financial and Controlling Modules very important for SAP Consultant

3 out of 5 stars Good resource book for "How To" configure SAP.......2007-01-10

This is a good book and might well deserve a 4 start rating. The pluses are it covers a large range of "How To" tasks necessary for setting up and maintaining your SAP system in as clear a presentation as is possible for the monolith that is SAP. Menu paths and transaction codes are listed and the information is well organized. Its minuses are that the information is out of date so it's difficult to follow the menu paths and some of the T codes don't work any longer. Sometimes the directions are not as specific or detailed as I would like. I would prefer directions that are crystal clear (do this to accomplish X) but I'm afraid that has more to do with the SAP labyrinth than the author. Only 3 starts because of the out-of-date info and lack of detail but still a good starting point to figure things out.

2 out of 5 stars Old guide with outrageous price.......2006-11-29

Several years ago I got some help from this book to understand the basic principles of BW. This book is currently very outdated. The outrageous part is that the publisher reprinted the book recently with a 50% increase in the price, without updating the content at all.
If the authors publish a new edition, I'll be the first one to buy it.

2 out of 5 stars Seriously outdated.......2005-09-22

Man, you can't keep selling the same book forever and keep everyone satisfied. I liked the way they presented the idea of BW, but it was seriously outdated. They should make enhancements and upgrades atleast one in two years

1 out of 5 stars Step by Step guide to where?.......2005-02-01

Anybody buying this book to learn some BW will be very much disappointed. Like the way the book is organised but older stuff. I can't beleive the greedy publiser is still selling this book. Not only they should stop selling, also should recall the book.

2 out of 5 stars Navigation in 2.0 and nothing more..........2004-03-19

Disappointing in both structure and content; surprising thing, cosidering that the authors come with substantial credentials.

It is more of an end-user self-training package targeting the individuals that want to memorize and troubleshoot their way through the setup rather that providing a step-by-step business case driven scenario.

Unfortunately the release that make the subject of the book is already obsolete (well, this is not authors' fault).

The CD-ROM attached to it is of little if any use;

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for Begginers !.......2004-01-29

This book is great since all the step by step instruction is accurate. This book is for SAP consultants who have little knowledge of SAP-BW concepts and would like become a SAP-BW expert. The only thing that I saw lacking is for Business Explorer query options. There are very few examples for Business Explorer. But however, I think if you play with the GUI this problem is overcome easily. THIS BOOK IS WORTH IT !!!

2 out of 5 stars CD Not usable.......2007-10-03

If you're planning on making use of the NetWeaver trial system, be aware that it will not install on Windows Vista. On Windows XP, the instructions on the SAP site do NOT work...the system is simply not usable...After two hours of attempting to figure out how to fix the installation, I just removed it...

In my opinion, the examples in the book are nice, but without a working system to review HOW the examples work, the book is of limited value to an SAP programmer....

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-09-07

By far the best ABAP book available. It covers the essentials of good coding using the object-oriented paradigm. If you want to be coding at a high level fast, read - no study - this book.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive ABAP reference.......2007-08-30

I got this book last week from SAP press.i read first 5 chapters and i can say this book clearly explains all the concepts. The writers explained the differences between procedural ABAP and object oriented ABAP where ever neceessary. Also the usage of obsolete statements are marked for the reader. this will be a good book for those who have previous ABAP experience and wanted to learn the Object oriented concepts from scratch. My only problem is i cant install the software that comes with the book. its like you cant install ABAP server on Vista.Be patient and read it its a 1000+ pages book.

5 out of 5 stars Clarification about the editions.......2007-07-06

The book "ABAP Objects - ABAP Programming in SAP NetWeaver" (grey Cover, 950 pages, published by SAP PRESS, March 15, 2007, ISBN-10: 1592290795 ISBN-13: 978-1592290796) is the new edition of the book "ABAP Objects: Introduction to Programming SAP Applications" (black Cover, 576 pages, published by Addison-Wesley, June 14, 2002, ISBN-10: 0201750805, ISBN-13: 978-0201750805).

The new book replaces the old book. The new book covers release 7.0 of the ABAP Application Server (former SAP Basis). The old book covers release 4.6. The software of the new book is a Trial Version of the ABAP Application Server 7.0 that is supported in the SAP Developers Network (SDN). The software of the old book is a Mini Basis 4.6 and is not supported any more.

The contents of the old book is partly out of date. The software of the old book should not be installed any more. The programming examples of the old book are still valid and can also be carried out with the software of the new book. If you have the old book and want to install the software of the new book, you can download it from the SDN.

3 out of 5 stars OOP.......2007-05-15

Beware the concepts are changed clights between C++ and Java so it becomes somewhat confusing. I recommend to get the later edition from SAP PRESS.

4 out of 5 stars Kat's Review On SAP R/3 Plant Maintenance.......2007-09-17

It is very good book to map business process between Client & SAP R/3.
Every Functional Consultant should have this book as a refference.

4 out of 5 stars One of the few decent resource tools for SAP.......2007-03-22

A good resource, help tool for SAP users. You will need to be somewhat familiar with SAP to appreciate this book, however, I would recommend purchasing it as a reference tool. Easy explanations and complete.

3 out of 5 stars Teaches the fundamental concepts of SAP PM.......2006-09-21

Rather than trying to be a detailed guide to Plant Maintenance, a comprehensive reference book, or a source of answers to complex problems, Stengl tries to teach the fundamental concepts of SAP PM.

A very basic introductory book that demystifies the PM module. Aimed at the newcomer to SAP R/3, the book is a great guide. And a guide any new traveler must have to navigate the highways and back roads of SAP. It works best as a supplement to a SAP-PM course, but lacks the depth of a resource book.

In Chapter 4 - "Objects in R/3 PM", the authors do a good job of explaining the relationship of Functional Locations, Equipment, PM Assemblies, and Materials. Chapter 5 attempts to tackle breakdown and corrective maintenance, having worked as a Maintenance Planner, my first reaction was humor. In a perfect world, the roles of Maintenance Planner, Maintenance Technician, and Maintenance Controller would be this structured and defined. In the real world things are not so black and white.

Buy the book if you are new to SAP PM. It is a nice entry point. If you are approaching the Plant Maintenance with prior SAP experience then I recommend skimming the chapters in a bookshop before buying online.

3 out of 5 stars Average .......2006-08-27

There have been good reviews or this book, but somehow I do not think it suited me as much as I would have liked. Nevertheless, it is a helpful reference that enabled me to refresh some concepts on the field of Plant Maintenance in SAP.

"Rely on this book for information on the technologies and methods you'll need to design and implement high-availability systems...It will help you transform the vision of always-on networks into a reality."-Dr. Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO, Novell Corporation
Your system will crash! The reason could be something as complex as network congestion or something as mundane as an operating system fault. The good news is that there are steps you can take to maximize your system availability and prevent serious downtime. This authoritative book will provide you with the tools to deploy a system with confidence. The authors guide you through the building of a network that runs with high availability, resiliency, and predictability. They clearly show you how to assess the elements of a system that can fail, select the appropriate level of reliability, and provide steps for designing, implementing, and testing your solution to reduce downtime to a minimum. All the while, they help you determine how much you can afford to spend by balancing costs and benefits. This book of practical, hands-on blueprints:
* Examines what can go wrong with the various components of your system
* Provides twenty key system design principles for attaining resilience and high availability
* Discusses how to arrange disks and disk arrays for protection against hardware failures
* Looks at failovers, the software that manages them, and sorts through the myriad of different failover configurations
* Provides techniques for improving network reliability and redundancy
* Reviews techniques for replicating data and applications to other systems across a network
* Offers guidance on application recovery
* Examines Disaster Recovery

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good explanations, some product bias.......2007-03-09

I knew very little about High Availability (HA) before I read this book. Now I feel I can hold my own with the propeller-heads in the data center.
The book gives a thorough treatment of the subject. The explanations were good; the graphics add value but are a little basic; also there is some favorable bias towards Veritas who originally published the book. (Veritas has some high availability software and services you can buy.) But overall a definite keeper. I recommend it if you're interested in High Availability design and concepts.

4 out of 5 stars More on the relationship between security issues and HA.......2004-04-13

as I was reading this otherwise excellent book, I noticed that there was a very important theme (to my understanding), which wasn't honored enough attention; namely, issues relating to the `Secure Socket Layer' protocol and availability, which directly translates to money coming your or someone else's way.

How does it affect the HA and your web applications architecture? SSL Certificates in a HA setting? . . . etc. All diagrams would present the web farm directly facing the internet!?

I even stopped reading and went to the index looking for it and found that there were indeed two -very basic- blurbs on it on pages 301 and 352.

I know security is a theme by itself, but the relationship between security issues and HA is way too fundamental to simply skim over them. As a matter of fact I would say that number one issue affecting HA is security.

Also the book has a very SA oriented (am I talking about another book already? ;-)) style. I would like to read a little more about `the Physics' of it. For example, cosmic rays' (I am not joking), like neutrinos, influence on the proper/stable functioning of computers is greater than the, comparatively speaking, very anomalous `split brain' types of errors and more on, electric accidents, the effective use of ECC memory. Should it go in the Web servers, too, in addition to the data centers? Why?

Cabling and electromagnetic inductance issues are mentioned in the `Tales from the Field', but I could see some people expecting a more rounding explanation/solution to the `tales'. In the case in which they talk about a java web server people might have the impression that `Java' or its use in a web server was wrong, which
I could tell was most probably not the case, but the use of JSP without specifying the sessions shouldn't be automatically created, which is the default many developers forget.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than the first edition!.......2004-04-06

I bought the first edition of this book, and it became so dog-eared from everyone borrowing it that I was about to order another, when I saw there was a secodn edition. This one is even better that the first. If you need action items and you need set-up help for providing the kind of network your boss wants and needs, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on system/data availability.......2004-02-29

Very good coverage of HA issues. Many people get a warm fuzzy having one piece of kit that is "reliable" or "redundant". To get substantial gains in availability requires a more complete systems view. This book reviews many aspects, and paths that can be taken towards increasing availability. I heartily recommended this book.

5 out of 5 stars Broad coverage for a broad audience.......2003-12-31

Hal and Evan have produced an excellent overview of the field of reliable computer systems which is useful to system administrators, system architects and to non-technical people who need a general understanding of the field.

As a system architect with a programming background facing the task of designing a simple highly reliable system this provided an excellent perspective on the different issues and technologies. It left me well prepared to then delve into the product literature of specific products that addressed the issues relevant to the project.

I believe this would also be an excellent book for IT managers who are looking at commissioning a "high availability" system, whether from an external software integrator or an internal company IT department. In particular, it describes what is easily achievable, what is achievable only at great expense, and what is simply not doable. It also emphasises the roles and responsibilities of people involved in ongoing support of HA systems; this book clearly describes how creating such a system is not the end but the start of providing reliable services.

The reading will be challenging for those of non-technical background, but the book keeps its focus on why you would use each technology rather than simply how each is applied, which makes it relevant to a wide range of readers. It should also ensure that this book remains useful even as technologies change.

What this book does not do is provide a formula for setting up a system. It's a great first step, though.

In addition the writing is clear, structure and flow are good and mistakes are few. Not the lightest of reads, but then again this is a serious topic about systems worth serious money. And at 550-odd pages of dense reading material, this book is well worth investing in.

5 out of 5 stars Good book to carry with you for reference.......2007-09-07

This book is good if you use it as a reference in your job. If you want to learn PP this is not the book for you. I helped me in a lot of projects. Moreover the functionality in PP has hardly changed from 4.6C.

1 out of 5 stars Read the free SAP help instead.......2002-01-21

This is basically a poor rewrite of the on-line SAP documentation. There is nothing to learn from this book. I have found that all of these "Administering" books from Que are waste of paper. Spend you money elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough description.......2000-11-21

The book is not so informative who would like to understand the detailed functions of SAP PP module. The book contains no picture or screen shot. It's dealt with various functions but it doesn't seem to be enough.

4 out of 5 stars Big job, great results.......2000-06-21

As far as I can see these guys have made a big part of job about description of PP customizing and implementation. I am a PP consultant, and I find out a lot of very useful tips concerning this part of SAP R/3. An integration with CO and MM has also been described. So I recomend this issue to any interested in PP people.

1 out of 5 stars Not as good as SAP's online help.......2000-03-30

The content in this book is not helpful if you know how to use SAP's online help. It is insufficient to provide an understanding of how particular functions in PP module work. In brief, this book is not informative.

The perfect reference for end-users (accounting clerks, sales reps, shipping and receiving clerks, human resources employees, etc.) who merely use SAP as a tool to get their job done. One of the major hassles in an SAP implementation is getting these people up to speed on the product after implementation. Most companies have either in-house or out-of-house training for their employees on SAP, but once they get back to the office, they are suddenly on their own. This book will be a must-have reference for these employees. Much of the coverage in this book is aimed at "immediate" material so that ends can get back to work on their job functions with the SAP software. Chapters on navigation, integration with Microsoft Office, reporting, business process, and performing common tasks will jump start readers into getting work done, and accomplishing more immediately.

3 out of 5 stars A bit old.......2006-09-21

Good basic intro. to SAP R/3, but this book was written in 1999. Unless it is updated soon, it will be very outdated.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not expected.......2005-10-18

SAP R/3 in 24 Hours was a good intro book for familiarizing oneself with the general working of the vast program. My only gripe was with the level of detail being less than I expected in the modules. "How do I enter a sales order, journal entry, standard costs...?" These questions were not the kind that were answered easily in this basic text.

So, in summary, it will help you with general tasks like logging in, changing your password, the architecture behind the program (broadly), and navigation. It is not the book to tell you how to do your job inside a company using SAP.

3 out of 5 stars Neither here nor there.......2005-08-02

This is a basic book on SAP. Part of the book seems to have been written for an audience with technical aspirations while the rest of the book seems to have been written for a person trying to get SAP overview. The book overly repeats many concepts; could have been written in half the pages.

It is a quick read and will provide basic overview of SAP. Not bad, but not terribly good either.

3 out of 5 stars A piece of the puzzle............2004-09-15

While I appreciate what Larocca was trying to accomplish, the book has a number of shortcomings. It's dated, and therefore focused on what's becoming only a small piece of the SAP software story. And it's audience seems to vary from chapter to chapter. Of the 10+ books I have dealing with SAP, I put this one in the middle of the pack - I was compelled to finally pick up a copy (used, please!) given that it continues to top the best sellers. But I must say that if you really want to learn SAP from a technical, implementation, or administration perspective, you need to keep looking. I'll rarely flip through the pages of Teach Yourself again, but know from the dog-eared pages in my books by Jacobs/Whybark and G Anderson that really good books - ones that probably have a better claim to teaching you anything in 24 hours - exist.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book, misleading title.......2004-06-05

excellent book. very nicely gives you and overview of SAP and
all of its modules and aspects. good book , no doubt.

The only gripe I have is that this should be titled
"SAP OVERVIEW in 24 Hours".

The actual title is misleading.

3 out of 5 stars This is for experienced ABAPers only.......2004-10-22

I was new to ABAP and went haywire reading this book. This book is someone who already knows ABAP/4 for atleast 6 months or so.Even people with programming background trying to learn ABAP won't get anything from the this book.Infact one gets overwhelmed.THIS IS NOT YOUR FIRST ABAP BOOK !!!!
The pros of the book are 1.it covers dialog programming 2.Sapscripts which most introductory books don't cover.
I would recommend getting SAMS ABAP/4 IN 21 DAYS for someone who wants to learn ABAP basics

3 out of 5 stars "Heavy" book.......2003-08-19

Very analytical. Long sentence, long paragraph writing. It is helpfull only if you read it from the first to last page. Not a reference. More like bed time book

1 out of 5 stars Very faulty.......2002-02-23

I'm an SAP trainer - this book has a lot of mistakes, better buy "ABAP objects" from SAP Press/Galileo

2 out of 5 stars Still trying to figure this out.......1999-04-27

The book would be good for someone who has started the programming of ABAP/4. However if you are a new comer to this you will find it difficult and having to flip to this chart on page ?? then to this chart on page ?? makes it even more difficult. If you want to learn the basics this is not the book to buy. After I learn somemore in the programming stage of my training I might make a new review. But if your a beginner to SAP as I am stay away from this for now!!

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good, to the point, technically oriented, book !.......1999-03-02

One of the best books on ABAP/4 . This is not one of those simplistic books that have large typefaces and garish pictures. Has all the technical details that will interest an experienced IT professional.

For those interested in redefining the way in which their business does its business, SAP R/3 Business Blueprint: Understanding the Business Process Reference Model is worth a perusal. Authors Curran and Keller define their central idea--business engineering--as a method by which information technology is used to design and reengineer business processes, such as sales and distribution, instead of simply automating them. And as is clear from the title, this concept is explored almost exclusively within the context of SAP R/3.

The book is broken down into four sections: "Business Engineering," "Process Engineering," "Architecture," and "Framework & Tools." These segments follow a sliding scale that goes from MBA esoterica to practical application to behind-the-scenes implementation. The first section is dedicated to such things as mapping out global goals and identifying the organization processes that need to be reengineered. Next, the authors get more fundamental, looking at ways in which SAP R/3 can enable a retooling of existing practice, illustrating this thought via case studies. Lastly, the book examines the details of an R/3 system and the tools in the R/3 arsenal. A terrific discipline-spanning volume, SAP R/3 Business Blueprint's one shortcoming is that it never addresses a world in which SAP R/3 might not be the ultimate answer to an organization's efficiency problems. But perhaps it wasn't meant to. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Informative But Poorly Written.......2000-11-07

There's a lot of relevant information in this book, but the authors have a repetitive, rambling, and sometimes vague style that makes it anything but a pleasure to read. You really have to work to sift the wheat from the chaff here. It could be easily condensed to half its size without losing any information.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written.......2000-01-07

I don't normally comment, but I don't know what book the reader from Minn. was reading. I'm guessing he meant to review a different book. This is not a "German" book at all. This is the clearest, best written book on SAP I've read, and I've read most of them. If you need an introduction to the business logic behind SAP, this is the book to buy.

2 out of 5 stars Need English Version?.......1998-12-01

This is my third book on SAP R/3. This book is another example of poorly written book on SAP. Though the topics are categorized very carefully and intelligently, the text in the book is in the language that requires 'translation in English.' The terms are either ill defined or if defined, then they have been used inconsistently. It was hard to get out the concept behind a topic, since authors give scattered information without focusing on main idea. Also, authors could have written the business processes (SAP modules) in more like step-by-step (or recipe) method, rather than in 'composition' format.

5 out of 5 stars The SAP Bible.......1998-11-26

Mr. Curran's book is the best book on SAP R/3 on the market. Everyone interested in this area should own this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction to SAP R/3--but not for the experts.......1998-08-24

This book gives a general insight on SAP R/3 functional (and a little bit of technical) model. This book can be very good introduction for the corporate executives with very little or no SAP R/3 experience. However, the contents of this book can be too obvious for those who already have worked with SAP R/3 system.

Book Description

This definitive, up-to-the-minute reference provides strategic, theoretical and practical insight into three of the most promising information management technologies-data warehousing, online analytical processing (OLAP), and data mining-showing how these technologies can work together to create a new class of information delivery system: the Information Factory. It comprehensively covers data warehouse design (using various approaches, models and indexing techniques), relational data base mining, data warehousing on the Web, and data replication. Several chapters discuss application development with popular OLAP tools.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A complete handbook.......2005-03-29

This book is not a common Data Mining/Data Warehousing book. It has the objective of being a complete handbook, and it is successful in its aim. It gives the readers a good background that helps in answering the common questions a practitioner has. To summarise: the authors of the book managed to describe the whole subject area, that is not so easy to find in other books on these topics. To achieve that knowledge we should read many other publications from different areas.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Concepts and Motivations.......2003-10-03

I read this book a couple of years ago, then found it useful again recently when my work re-involves building data warehouses. This book has clear coverage on many topics in database and data warehouse. Authors often include descriptions of technologies as well as the motivation of using such technologies.

This is not a book that walks you step by step to implementations, but it is a book that will help you understand the technologies. Step by step guides are product specific, and extremely lacking in this area.

3 out of 5 stars Good, considering too much AND too little information.......2000-05-17

If you are an IT professional with a good breadth of knowledge about the structure of enterprise data, systems and statistics, yet you are not sure what Data Warehousing, Data Mining or OLAP are, and are not even sure you know how to spell them, then this book is for you. (Rather limited audience if you ask me)

For the technically savvy, this book is excellent in covering, in minute detail, all of the possible needs, uses and commercial systems/products available to do Data Warehousing, Data Mining and/or OLAP. The tremendous amount of possibilities naturally causes this volume to lack the depth to actually guide a reader to an understanding of how they can implement these concepts. I do complement the author in possessing/researching such a tremendous amount of material. A downside is the fact that this book is instantly outdated because it is describing current technology (As of the writing of this book).

For non-technical Management and Executives however, this book will likely only confuse you to death and cause you to frown vehemently at the next person who recommends a Data Warehousing or OLAP strategy for your organization.

If you fit the profile that should read this book however, this is a great primer/eye opener to a rather large subject area called Enterprise Intelligence. Break out your reading glasses, (the print is small) set aside a good chunk of time, (the book is huge) and read it. Then find the suitable follow-up books that are in line with your new interests with Enterprise Intelligence. Keep a narrow focus when picking one of these. If you are a manager or executive, hire a team. This is a lot of stuff, and the need for this stuff is so painfully apparent that your business can not wait 4 years for you to learn this stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Good breadth, little depth........2000-03-11

If new to the domain of Business Intelligence/Data Warehousing, this book will provide a better than average job of arming you with enough technical information to make you dangerous in your "new territory". However, if you're seeking more depth in any of the title's areas or are looking for something "less-technical" (e.g., more of a business justification), other books would serve as a better reference. Nonetheless, for its broad coverage, this book is a good addition to any BI/DW practitioner's technical library.

5 out of 5 stars Great book- the olapmessageboard highly recommends this.......1999-10-06

As some one who makes a living doing OLAP development, I thought the Author does a great job explaining the similarities and differences between OLAP and relational analysis. An emphasis is DW and DM was obviously present. So not the best OLAP book but maybe the best (or one of) in total architecture.
