The information in the book is typical - nothing new - You can get other books for one-fourth of the price. May I recommend, "Roughing it Easy","Cooking with Home Storage", or any Amish cookbook? There are a lot of books with more information out there. If this book were less expensive, I would not have expected so much. Very disappointing! I would never recommend it.

I have stocked my shelves for any catastrophe that might come our way. I knew our family would not starve but was beginning to be concerned about how I was going to put together easy and tasty meals from a can. How was I going to bake or cook them, too? The Reid's book has taken the guesswork out of the mealplanning. What a much needed book in these times we may face! I have made the oven box following the simple instructions - you are a genius, Chuck! We had a great time doing it, too. My kids are amazed that we can bake a meal - if we have to- in a cardborad box!

We have this book and have read it and used it. It is an easy reading and practical book that gets you ready for disaster situations. After having our home severely damaged in two California earthquakes, we appreciate the step-by-step instructions on setting up a disaster food pantry with nutritious foods we can use (not camping freeze dried fare) and can rotate through our normal food planning. And you get the recipes for using the food to boot! We also made our cardboard oven and cooked in it, and it works! It's a great family project and will put your kids at ease knowing you are good scouts and well prepared!

Catastrophic Cooking is anything but a freeze-dried, live off of the land survival manual. It is a practical and sensible guide to shopping for, stockpiling and preparing foods. The most user friendly cookbook so far dealing with disaster.......1999-08-22

I'm so excited about this cookbook. I'm an avid reader of cookbooks and own many, but I don't always find that I utilize much of the information. This book, however, is different. It is so user friendly and for the first time I've found someone that is addressing food storage and the use of what you have in your pantry. The shopping list is exact to the recipes. A menu for each day makes preparation easy and precise. The box oven is not solar...but fueled by briquettes..with an exact amount of briquettes per degrees desired in oven. Shopping, sprouting, and food rotation for safety is all made easy. Carol has taken a possible negative situation and turned it into a project that has taken away the contributor of fear and replaced it with knowledge and the ability to take care of yourself and your family. It is important to keep your eating as normal as possible in an adverse situation and Carol as provided the tools to do this. Thank you, Carol for caring enough to share your knowledge and to take the time to help others. We have made our oven and taught others how to make theirs. We practice with the ovens using the recipes that are in "Catastrophic Cooking" and everyone loves the gourmet taste and well balanced meals.

This book, even though geared for Y2K type expected disaster, still has many useful tips for emergency preparedness. I found the food prep and storage section particularly useful. Also it had an excellent section on waste disposal which is often overlooked in other emergency preparedness books. Small and portable enough to take with you.

The Y2K Survival Guide and Cookbook (Ecovillage, TN) by Dorothy R. and Albert K. Bates is not your usual recipe collection. With the savvy of environmentalists ad the frenzy of those expecting emergency, Dorothy and Albert Bates cover every area of survival and food preparation. Expecting the worst case scenario - rolling brownouts and total black outs, failed utility systems and water purification problems - this book provides natural alternatives: food storage, chlorine bleach to purify water, using wood stoves, building your own composting toilet, and gardening. There are even first aid and Morse code directions in the final pages. After coping with any Y2K calamities, it's time to cook. In between survival guidelines, the Bates' book is filled with hearty recipes reminiscent of campfire food. As computers buzz blank, you can enjoy split pea soup from melted icicles, marmalades from sun-dried fruit, or shiitake joes from home-grown mushrooms. Even though The Y2K Survival Guide and Cookbook is intended for the millennium-minded cook, it is an eccentric volume any eco-conscious chef should add to their library.

A Treasure of a Book.......1999-07-28

In addition to the recipes and food tips that could keep a diverse group of survivors happy for years (who wants plain ol' Chili gets that, and who prefers dishes like Rice Noodle Pad Thai will be satisfied also), there is an excellent overview of food storage techniques that includes charts I've never before seen on the shelf life of edibles, from an individually wrapped apple to nuts in airtight packages.

While Dorothy and Albert have given us lists, lists, and more lists to follow and yet others to create lists of our own, throughout their little treasure of a book is a taste of the loving, compassionate sensibility without which any attempt to survive is bound to be futile.

As the former COO of a company which makes embedded computers, and currently the Global Director of Marketing for Computers, Peripherals, Networking & Communications for one of the largest service organizations in the world, I can assure readers that the Y2K problem has the potential for a dramatic, disastrous impact on Americans. Most of us have heard the wakeup calls and have heeded them to one degree or another, and have planned to prepare to avoid significant problems due to Y2K-caused disruptions. Happily, most of us are not so blithely unconcerned as to dismiss the Y2K issue entirely (as are some of the reviewers of this book).

To that end, I was very pleased to pick up a copy of "3 Steps to Y2K Readiness for the Home and Family," by Don Sabatini. I've read a few texts on the Y2K problem as it affects the typical family, and in my mind, this book stands above the rest. It focuses on the problem, gives us the a concise understanding of it and makes complete recommendations; all in a clean, easy-to-understand fashion. He reduces complex issues into layman's language probably better than any other author I've read.

You owe it to yourself and your family to prepare for potential Y2K-related problems. This book is perhaps the best means of addressing those problems.

Last Saturday I met a Y2K consultant. He was getting ready to sell his house, convert all his cash to gold and silver, grab his generator and move to the hills by late October. He was about to do all this because of what he 'knew' about Y2K! I think he's a nutcake, thank god my wife bought this book by Don Sabatini for me so I KNEW what I really DO need to think about - and what is hype!

I liked this book because it helped me to understand what Y2K is all about. I have no computer background and this book made perfect sense to me. I liked that the book informed me of different options to deal with Y2K. I could decide for myself how seriously I was going to take Y2K, and what if any precautions I want to take. I like a lot of the simple little tips the author offered that I would have never thought of. I chose to take moderate precautions which will cost me little or nothing but will bring my family and I great peace of mind at New Year's time!

I haven't taken the Y2K issue to seriously until a few prominent business men in L.A. shared with me what they know about the Year 2000 bug and how it can effect them. I decided to do some research for the fun of it. As it turns out, there really is a large subject matter to concern ourselves with. This book helps to cover all the different solutions to these potential problems that may exist in the very near future. The book is well written and 'to the point.' I would recommend it for everybody.

We thought this was a decent guide. It provides 2-4 week home confinment preparedness information. We liked the shelf life information, the 100 item checklist and the different water treatment options. It would have been 4 stars and a steal at $5.00

We found all of the information contained in the guide objective and easy to read. The authors took a step-by-step approach to understanding the Y2K problem. The guide answered most of our questions to date. Each chapter was centered around " in the event of a Y2K disruption". We found the supplies list and the document information useful. We liked how the guide included what documents to get, how to get them, and the phone numbers for all the vital document offices. Since we both work, we don't have filter through pages of opinion. This guide gets right to the point!

Looks like each contributing writer picked a subject and downloaded it off a computer website! Don't buy this and all or any costs!! If you're looking for a guide which will be cost effective and practical without all the sensationalism get: "Don't Panic! You Can Prepare for the Y2K Crisis" by Lee Dodds. It's only 41 pages, yet manages to provide more clear, consise and useful information than can be found in this disorganized, paste-up mess.

I have had an opportunity to review the book's manuscript, as it was being written. The book provides a very practical and visionary approach to recover from a Y2K disaster -- what it calls "Fireworks" -- using technology (object, distributed computing), methodology (adding method/sanity to madness, what a disaster tends to be) and sociology (people aspects). Using this vision, an organisation can position itself for the future, while recovering from a circumstance that may put it back in time.

Overall, a must read for IT planners, managers and architects -- confronting what management guru Peter Drucker would have called "Managing in Turbulent Times".

Why to try to raise spiritiuality of current generation with doubtful speculations? Yes, there is Y2K problem, but it would never create global disasters as promised by many "experts"; first of all ones, who are financially depends on a existence of such image: computer consultants working on this problem (well, I am computer consultant too, I see that around me) Using such things like Y2K or asteroiuds disaster often just a way of marketing - create a lot of noise, make a movie, make money on souveniers and forget about forever like nothing happened... Using false statements to stress good ideas does not make the case stronger.
