4 out of 5 stars Problems with Pronunciation.......2004-06-08

I'll admit it: I purchased this techno-tome in an effort to impress one of the girls in the IT shop at work. She'd been unresponsive to my normal (and myriad) charms and I placed the blame (wrongly) on my inability to speak her language. A few witty anecdotes from this book got me a first date, but my inability to pronounce the authors' names kept me from rounding first. Shameful!

4 out of 5 stars Cases in IT management - Variety is essential.......2000-04-25

This book has a good collection of interesting and easy to understand case studies. Unlike many case study books this does not suffer from containing a lot of overhead data. It is a good companion text for a course in IT Management. The editors offer a variety of cases in terms of both subject matter and context. It has cases from different countries covering a range of industries and organizations (both private and public sectors). The focus, however, is largely operational and tactical issues. Even though the questions at the end of many cases are well formulated, a few cases could benefit from the editorial support in bringing out the readers' creativity. All in all, it is a useful book.

Book Description

This hardcover edition is available only in a premium, full-cloth binding. It will not ship with a dust jacket.

Today's business environment demands significant changes in the way we do business. Simply formulating strategy is no longer sufficient; we must also design the processes to implement it effectively. The key to change is process innovation, a revolutionary new approach that fuses information technology and human resource management to improve business performance. The cornerstone to process innovation's dramatic results is information technology--a largely untapped resource, but a crucial enabler of process innovation. In turn, only a challenge like process innovation affords maximum use of information technology's potential. Davenport provides numerous examples of firms that have succeeded or failed in combining business change and technology initiatives. He also highlights the roles of new organizational structures and human resource programs in developing process innovation. Process innovation is quickly becoming the byword for industries ready to pull their companies out of modest growth patterns and compete effectively in the world marketplace.

5 out of 5 stars A great book on Process Improvement.......2005-10-08

Thank You to Tom Davenport.

This is a wise author who wrote a great book in the early 90's. It was eclipsed a bit by Hammer and Champy's "reengineering the corporation." It has never been given the press it rightfully deserves. I read this book in 1997 and have found it to be useful over and over again. This is a book of important business insights regarding process improvement through technology. Keep in mind that the book was written prior to the internet becoming mainstream. This author saw the future and wrote about it before it happened on a wide scale.

Any business person can draw from the wealth of knowledge in this book.

The book is a must read for business analysts, managers, and project leaders in the Information Technology field.

This book, Hammer and Champy's book, Books by H James Harrington, and some of the newer Six Sigma books can form a great curriculum for those professionals undertaking process improvement initiatives in their companies.

Change is constant. When will process improvements cease to be needed? This book looks at the dynamics of process innovation/change and how it pervades organizations.

In economic downtimes, innovation can spur growth. Leaders in companies can improve their competitive advantage through process innovations and benefit from the efficiencies and savings gained through process improvements.

5 out of 5 stars A roadmap for process innovation and improvement.......2000-06-14

Davenport presents a practical roadmap for process improvement and process innovation which I have found very useful as a practitioner. Although not prescriptive, the text provides practitioners with useful very insights which can form the basis of an organisation's business process innovation/improvement methodology.

5 out of 5 stars Must read.......2000-03-29

This is a well-written book on the subject of process or business reengineering. It is written in a non-technical language, wastes few words, and covers the entire spectrum of topics that are essential to a successful reengineering effort. The discussions place a significant emphasis on the role that information or computer technology play today in the reengineering effort, particularly how this technology can facilitate the overall effort. I found the book largely sticking to the overall thread however at times it did become a wee bit academic to flip through the sections. All in all, a very good read.

Book Description

Reengineering within the context of the information technology (IT) function of an organization is examined in this CTR report.

The report helps IT managers determine the need for reengineering various aspects of IT and develop successful reengineering strategies that are aligned with business goals. The hardware, software, and network concerns of IT are all addressed.

Why Reengineer IT?

Reengineering has penetrated many aspects of the traditional organization, and information technology (IT) has been the chief enabler of most reengineering initiatives. Throughout the reengineering process, however, many organizations' IT operations themselves have changed their business processes little. As a result, the application backlog still exists, networking lags far behind, and assistance to end users is less than adequate.

CTR's Reengineering the Information Technology Organization report addresses the shortcomings of the IT operation as advanced technology provides opportunities for reengineering. The report defines reengineering as it applies to the IT function of an organization, helps determine the need to reengineer various aspects of IT, suggests reengineering projects for IT, and assists in formulating a reengineering plan for IT management. The hardware, software, and network concerns surrounding the successful reengineering of IT are all addressed.

Reengineering Defined

Reengineering the Information Technology Organization provides an analysis of reengineering and the role of IT, the critical issues surrounding the technology, and statistics on the progress and results of reengineering efforts.

Potential efficiencies and cost savings of reengineering IT are explained for managers who must determine a business rationale for reengineering plans. The report explores the management advantages and disadvantages of reengineering the IT organization.

The IT Organization Explored

Reengineering the Information Technology Organization describes the current state of the IT function and explains how IT is expected to evolve in the future.

The current IT operation in many organizations has lost a significant amount of influence over the last decade, primarily because it failed to adequately support the organization during a time of much technological change. The report reviews how today's IT operation can be reengineered to once again deliver on its mission.

The report also examines the ways in which the use of information, and hence the IT function, is changing. The role of IT must continually adapt to take advantage of technological innovations; the report outlines how to develop a reengineering effort which takes future developments into consideration.

Technical Aspects of Reengineering IT Explained

Reengineering the Information Technology Organization analyzes the potential areas for reengineering within the IT shop, such as the network, the development of software, and the help desk. Computer networks have gradually grown within companies, generally without much specific planning. The report discusses how an organization might consider reengineering to prepare for an enterprisewide network.

The need to deliver custom applications in a timely manner is one of the greatest challenges facing IT shops. The report discusses how higher-quality information can be delivered to users without the delays of the traditional application development cycle.

As the use of personal computers (PCs) and their wide variety of software continues to proliferate among end-users, IT shops are struggling to keep up with the demand for technical support services. The report discusses ways the support function can be reengineered to provide better assistance at lower costs.

Application Issues

There are many software applications beginning to experience widespread use that have the potential to assist in changing or reengineering the IT function and mission. Reengineering the Information Technology Organization examines the many applications for IT functions which are just beginning to emerge. The report evaluates some of these applications and speculates on how they will affect IT.

An IT organization must constantly investigate new products and test any relevant products in-house. In a proactive IT shop, at least several new products should be under consideration at any one time.

Strategic Planning for IT

Reengineering the Information Technology Organization provides valuable guidelines for planning and implementing a reengineering project for the IT organization. The report explains how to evaluate and select potential projects, determine the technical and business need of each project, and successfully implement the chosen plan of action.

Improvement does not conclude at the end of a successful reengineering effort. A reengineered IT process usually requires some fine-tuning to reach the planned level of efficiency. Therefore, the report also describes how to combine reengineering with continuous process improvement (CPI) and total quality management (TQM) to ensure an efficient IT organization.

Who Should Read This Report?

This report is intended for IT managers, line and staff managers, and executives who are responsible for utilizing electronic information and other computing resources as a part of a strategy for improving all aspects of an enterprise's performance. The report provides comprehensive explanations of the technology, the hardware and software standards and techniques, and the management strategies associated with reengineering the IT organization.

    Book Description

Process improvement, a key element of the most influential management movements in the 1980s and 1990s, can itself be considerably improved by the use of information technology. Distributed and asynchronous group support systems, such as e-mail, computer conferencing and the World Wide Web are like to play a major role in this improvement. In addition, process improvement affects organizational learning, and the use of information technology can boost this influence by increasing the breadth and speed of knowledge dissemination in organizations.

This book analyzes the relationship between collaborative technologies, process improvement and organizational learning. It is based on the author's experiences in numerous process-focused organizational development projects and a three-year project where over 38 process improvement groups were aided by the support of collaborative technologies. This book will help managers prepare their organizations to survive and thrive in the information era. Only the fittest organizations will master the art of efficient and effective acquisition and the use of data, information and knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars It actually tells you something new!.......2000-09-07

I must admit that I felt a bit uneasy when I found out that this book, which was recommended to me by a friend, had been written by someone with a PhD. In my experience, books written by PhDs are often very academic, difficult to read, and end up telling me what I already know in a very convoluted way.

This book, however, dares to enter "dangerous academic territory" by, for example, defining "knowledge" and measuring it in different instances of business communication. Even in doing so, its ideas make sense and are logically consistent. It also wraps everything up nicely by proposing a methodology (MetaProi) to put the ideas in the book into practice and showing the results of the use of that methodology.

I think this book might get a "thumbs down" from academic ivory tower dwellers. From me (what do I know?), it gets two thumbs up!

    5 out of 5 stars I used his nine-step system with 4 groups.......1999-10-19

Ned's book is great! I used his nine-step system (MetaProi) to facilitate four Business Process Improvement Teams in a local audio visual supply company. All four teams modeled, redesigned, and developed an implementation plan for at least one business process. Three of the four teams went on to successful implementation of their plans. One dynamo team solved several problems. Other than the kickoff, there were no face-to-face meetings. The widely distributed teams used collaborative technologies for nearly all interactions, resulting in minimal impact to daily operations. Participants were excited about growing with new methodologies and technologies.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Research Tool.......1999-07-15

This book will be essential reading for those wishing to develop insight into process improvement methodologies, which span popular business process reengineering and total quality improvement movements, and the use of computer mediated communication (groupware) to support these process improvement efforts. In particular, the marriage of the Metaproi methodology and groupware techniques, presented and illustrated with field experience, will be invaluable for those researching or undertaking process improvement projects.

5 out of 5 stars The book is written interestingly and in a very well wording.......1999-06-09

Great Book!!! The book is written interestingly and in a very well wording way. The standpoint of the writer integrating naturally into the real life of the reader needs accompanied with a blaze of practical examples which the writer has taken from the real life of his experience. Personally I have done a fascinating use the book to redesign software related process, and I can certainly say that from background in engineering, one can do a tremendously use of this book in any related technical \ business areas and probably more. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Is your company re-organizing? Read this book!.......1999-06-02

I knew most companies were listening to someone. This Book mentions who and adds to that body of literature called process improvement. After reading this book I was able to contribute to the on-going process and become a more valuable employee.

        Book Description

Technology is revolutionizing business practice. As a result, tens of thousands of executives are finding their industries on the verge of earthshaking changes. Now, drawing on four decades of consulting with companies struggling to "reinvent" themselves on the brink of cataclysmic restructuring or even extinction, Roy Harmon constructs a compelling three-pronged "reinvention" model (processes, technology, and people) which, when driven by long-term strategic vision, provides a flexible blueprint from which to spearhead ongoing change.

Using detailed examples from Andersen Consulting's worldwide practice, Harmon reinvents business operations in specific fields including retailing, health care, financial services, and even government, and targets other areas relevant to all industries, from computer technology to office organization. He shows how the most important process improvements (such as reorganizing functionally structured operations into "work cells") can eliminate bureaucratic and other inefficiencies, and how the latest technology, when combined with an energized workforce committed to action, can give teeth to the reinvention model.

To stimulate longer-term thinking, Harmon also explores and demystifies futuristic developments as they might affect transportation, power generation, agriculture and community planning, while executive "zinger" checklists near the beginning of each chapter help to pinpoint short to medium-term tactical and strategic plans. Finally, Harmon explains how adopting a pay-as-you-go approach to change, which Demands fast payback for an investment in improvement, is the enabling feature that can ensure continuous progress in the search for ever-better "best practices."

The world of the future holds the promise of incredible health, affluence, education, and quality of life. The movers and shakers in industry (always the driving force behind progress in the past) will be the first to usher in the new world. Now, armed with the practical advice and strategic vision presented by Roy Harmon in this important new work, the future really does lie in our hands.

        4 out of 5 stars Good high-level picture.......2000-05-23

This book describes the benefits of "re-engineering" through time-based analyses and work flow improvement. At this level, the book is a total success. The author's pithy style makes for good reading. Where the book is weak is in the details. I would have been happier to see the case studies presented in greater detail. Adding some diagrams to the case studies would have reinforced the concepts presented.

There is no question that Koulopoulos is headed in the right direction. Even with the high-level assessment, the book discusses some of the most important concepts of our time.
