Books in the Digital Age: The Transformation of Academic and Higher Education Publishing in Britain and the United States
John B. Thompson Manufacturer: Polity Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0745634788 |
Book Description
The book publishing industry is going through a period of profound and turbulent change brought about in part by the digital revolution. What is the role of the book in an age preoccupied with computers and the internet? How has the book publishing industry been transformed by the economic and technological upheavals of recent years, and how is it likely to change in the future? This is the first major study of the book publishing industry in Britain and the United States for more than two decades. Thompson focuses on academic and higher education publishing and analyses the evolution of these sectors from 1980 to the present. He shows that each sector is characterized by its own distinctive `logic' or dynamic of change, and that by reconstructing this logic we can understand the problems, challenges and opportunities faced by publishing firms today. He also shows that the digital revolution has had, and continues to have, a profound impact on the book publishing business, although the real impact of this revolution has little to do with the ebook scenarios imagined by many commentators.
Books in the Digital Age will become a standard work on the publishing industry at the beginning of the 21st century. It will be of great interest to students taking courses in the sociology of culture, media and cultural studies, and publishing. It will also be of great value to professionals in the publishing industry, educators and policy makers, and to anyone interested in books and their future.

Scrolling Forward: Making Sense of Documents in the Digital Age

What's up, doc? Information scientist David M. Levy wants us to look at the documents that fill our lives, and his book Scrolling Forward is a thoughtful reflection on their near-omnipresence. Levy has the perfect résumé for this job--after getting his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1981, he took off for England to pursue the study of calligraphy and bookbinding. His love of books shows in his writing, which is rich with references and anecdotes from Walt Whitman to Woody Allen.Drawing on examples as disparate as grocery store receipts, greeting cards, identity papers, and (of course) e-mail, Levy finds the common threads binding them together and explores how and why we use them in daily life. He looks at digitization closely, considering how speed, ease of editing, and potentially perfect copying changes our traditional considerations of documentation. Though he insists that he's looking at the present, not speculating about the future, it's hard to see how to avoid looking ahead after reading Scrolling Forward. --Rob Lightner

Publishing in the Information Age: A New Management Framework for the Digital Era
Douglas M. Eisenhart Manufacturer: Praeger Paperback ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0275956962 |
Book Description
This eloquent and masterful book details how the recent advancements in digital information technology mark a fundamental and irreversible transformation in the publishing industry. The clearly presented and highly readable text provides a much-needed, concise, easy-to-grasp introduction to this new world of digital publishing, the opportunities it presents, and what it means for managers in the industry, including the fundamental shift from format-based enterprises (e.g., book publishers) to firms that are developers and managers of intellectual properties in multiple forms which best meet their customers' information needs. Throughout the study, the author, a media executive who has held managerial positions in major book publishing, cable television, and software firms, focuses on the business strategies that both traditional print-based and new media publishing firms must implement to adapt and thrive in this rapidly evolving and complex environment. After an introductory chapter that reviews the major symptoms of change in the current publishing industry environment, the author examines the Information Age and the new information industry as the foundation for his analysis. He then presents his new framework, the seven "M"s of publishing, that serves both as the structural backbone and main thesis of the study. The central 11 chapters of the book detail these seven "M"s: the five value-added "M"s of Material, Mode, Media, Means, and Market; and the two infrastructural "M"s of Management and Money. The author supports his analysis with over 30 figures and tables that vividly depict the key points of the study. He also delineates 45 core concepts of publishing in the Information Age within the seven "M"s. The final chapter of the book presents the author's vision of the digital publishing enterprise and the paradigm of promise for managers and other stakeholders in the future of publishing.Customer Reviews:
The definitive analysis of the new world of publishing.......2003-04-14
I read this book when it was first released in 1994; as a newly published author, I re-read it recently and found its message still timely. Eisenhart is a talented writer whose vision of the digital information age is eloquently stated.

Documentary Filmmaking for the Digital Age
Michael Wranovics Manufacturer: Course Technology PTR ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1598630210 |
Book Description
Documentary Filmmaking for the Digital Age is a filmmaker's story--a look at how the author, with no formal training taught himself to make an independent documentary film that appealed to a wide audience. Instead of spending countless hours in the classroom and wasting energy on film school politics, Michael Wranovics undertook the ultimate educational experience: he went out and made a film that works. More than a simple narrative and anecdotal look at the making of Up for Grabs (a documentary about the legal battle over rightful ownership of Barry Bonds's 73rd home run ball), it discusses the technical and theoretical aspects of making documentary films. Through instructional words and images, it demystifies the filmmaking process and equips readers with the tools they need to make their own magnum opus. Using his own personal stories, the author imparts lessons in an engaging tone, making documentary filmmaking accessible to the average reader.

Dust or Magic, Creative work in the digital age
Bob Hughes Manufacturer: Bosko Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0954723953 |
Book Description
A book for the interface workers. Dust or Magic was primarily written for the young, talented people whose creative instincts are kindled by computers and live to create 'good stuff', but who are systematically betrayed by the managerial types in suits who hire them, set them absurd tasks, and sack them when their half-baked schemes go belly-up. It is also for people who simply want to know how human creativity fares in the digital age. Originally published by Addison-Wesley (under the title 'Dust or Magic, Secrets of successful multimedia design') this book is, in part, a 'secret history' of computers: a history told from the vantage point of the people who did the work. We have insiders' accounts of a range of influential products and projects, many of which were in danger of being forgotten. The scene is illuminated by recent insights into creativity and well-being from the fields of psychology and neuroscience, as well as tried-and-tested, practical strategies for workplace survival from other industries. The author, Bob Hughes, has been a 'creative' for most of his working life: first a calligrapher, then an advertising artist and copywriter before discovering computers in the mid-1980s. He now teaches at Oxford Brookes University on the MA in Interactive Media Publishing, and researches and writes about the wider impact of electronics and computers in workplaces world-wide. He also campaigns on behalf of migrants, refugees and all precarious workers. "What you are doing is stripping away the corporate bullshit from this 'revolution' - its ours not theirs. Reclaim the pixels!" - Chris McEvoy (Creator of 'Usability Must Die' www.usabilitymustdie.com). "There are many books explaining why software projects go sour; this one breaks the mold by showing how they come good." - Malcolm Cook (Senior Lecturer in Human Factors, University of Abertay) "It was incredibly engrossing. I expected to skim through it, and found myself reading it avidly, putting aside all the other work I should have been doing... It rang so true about so many things about the process of creating the virtual world we spend so much time in that I'm dying to share it with others who also create for it, or want to." - Aleen Stein (co-founder of the Voyager Company and CEO of Organa inc. www.organa.com).
