Customer Reviews:
A very helpful book.......2007-01-27
This book is an overview of the engineering profession like I've never seen before. Although it seems primarily written for high school and college students (and their parents), it also contains important tips for middle-school and elementary students. It belongs in every middle school, high school and college library and guidance office. Although it quotes some of the nation's top engineers and teachers, as well as engineering students, it isn't stodgy at all. Instead, it offers entertaining and easy-to-read advice on preparing for college and succeeding on campus and in the workplace, and also looks at salaries, employment trends, and fun things to do in the many engineering disciplines. It's a must-read for any student thinking about engineering as a career.
A great guide.......2006-11-29
There's a critical shortage of engineers these days--and especially a shortage of women engineers--and this is a great guide for kids who might be considering the field or wondering exactly what being an engineer means. I got this for my daughter and several of her friends, and donated it to the career office at their school. The book includes descriptions of different engineering fields, the type of work you'd be doing, the salary you can expect--plus suggestions on which high school classes and extracurricular activities would be good to get a student ready to study engineering in college. The authors interviewed many engineers for realistic details and included info on innovative career paths, including Engineers Without Borders. Best of all--the book is easy to read and interesting.

Thanks for the help! We have been doing a lot of research on the subject of Preventive Maintenance Scheduling. This gave us some good insight. Good stuff.

Excellent Introduction.......2003-11-05
I am half-way through this book and realize that I have used Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) for years. This was the approach we used because of HAZOP studies. If you look at the methodology, they are the same. It is an excellent book for first-pass economics of preventive maintenance (PM). Through numerous examples, he shows when to PM, when you are spending too much for PM, and when to just run the damn thing 'til it breaks. As I said, it is a great introduction. I have picked up Doc Palmer's book and can see I would be lost without preparation. If there are any short-comings, it is grammar and spelling. There are numerous typographical errors. Most engineers seem to have taken an-engineer's only english class in college. I found the errors troubling but the writing clear and concise. A very good book for a refresher (as in my case), or an introduction.
If this review was helpful, please add your vote -- Thanks.
Great Book.......2003-08-04
I am working as a Area Production Manager , as a responsible of Maintenance . I saw my mistakes after reading this great book . Everybody who inside the maintenance can find something useful. It is easly readable and implementable . Thanks
Book Description
Proven set of best practices for security risk assessment and management, explained in plain English
This guidebook sets forth a systematic, proven set of best practices for security risk assessment and management of buildings and their supporting infrastructures. These practices are all designed to optimize the security of workplace environments for occupants and to protect the interests of owners and other stakeholders. The methods set forth by the authors stem from their research at Sandia National Laboratories and their practical experience working with both government and private facilities.
Following the authors' step-by-step methodology for performing a complete risk assessment, you learn to:
- Identify regional and site-specific threats that are likely and credible
- Evaluate the consequences of these threats, including loss of life and property, economic impact, as well as damage to symbolic value and public confidence
- Assess the effectiveness of physical and cyber security systems and determine site-specific vulnerabilities in the security system
The authors further provide you with the analytical tools needed to determine whether to accept a calculated estimate of risk or to reduce the estimated risk to a level that meets your particular security needs. You then learn to implement a risk-reduction program through proven methods to upgrade security to protect against a malicious act and/or mitigate the consequences of the act.
This comprehensive risk assessment and management approach has been used by various organizations, including the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Bonneville Power Administration, and numerous private corporations, to assess and manage security risk at their national infrastructure facilities. With its plain-English presentation coupled with step-by-step procedures, flowcharts, worksheets, and checklists, you can easily implement the same proven approach and methods for your organization or clients. Additional forms and resources are available online at www.wiley.com/go/securityrisk.

144 pages of sound advice for anyone contemplating to buy a new home and considering the savings offered by choosing a manufactured home.
The book covers everything from choosing a floor plan to arranging favorable financing, and from finding a site for the home to choosing options.
Customer Reviews:
Another Industry Insider Sings Industry Praises.......2005-12-12
I'll bet industry insiders really do love this book. It drastically overstates the number of manufactured homes being sold (as a percentage of all home sales), it drastically overstates their savings as opposed to site-built homes, brags about "strict" HUD requirements (which are anything but), etc. There is one factual error after another with nothing to back up the claims. Although Talylor stresses how much "research" went into this brief fluff piece, he doesn't site anyone or any study that I recall seeing. The worst part of the lies to me are his claims that "the vast majority of home sales professionals are well-intentioned and eager to give you sincere advice and service . . . Some of the finest individuals I've known make their living in the manufactured housing business." Well, that certainly conflicts with my experience when I went shopping at dozens of lots in two states, and it seems to be at odds with Consumer's Union finding that half of all consumer complaints involve fraud on the part of these "fine" individuals. I don't know where Mr. Taylor worked (he was an industry employee), but maybe it was on a different planet. The typical earthly dealership incarnation bears little resemblence to what Manufactured Homes: The Buyer's Guide describes. Specifically, Consumer's Union found several kinds of fraud prevalent (in the article "In Over Our Heads" / February 2002):
* the dealership substituted a different home (another model, year, or size) for the one the customer thought they were buying
* the dealership falsified information on the loan application (often lying about the down payment amount or accepting borrowed money as a down payment)
* the dealership ended up charging more for the home than the price they originally quoted
* the terms of the sale were changed on the customer midway through the deal (when momentum makes it hard to back out) and additional expenses were added like extra fees or higher interest rates
* the dealership refused to give the customer copies of contracts they had to sign
Wow, these guys do sound like the salt of the earth, don't they? In my on family's case, we were on multiple occasions asked to sign blank forms for our "conveinence." After the contract was official, and when we complained about things that weren't right, people from the dealership actually cussed us out!
Another extremely important point is the home's set-up. Even the best manufactured home can be destroyed by a faulty set-up, and it won't be covered by warranty. I think Taylor devotes 1 or 2 inconsequential pages to this very important topic. Wes Johnson devotes 25 pages to the set-up in his book on manufactured homes (The Manufactured Home Buyer's Handbook), and 7 more just on the foundation itself. In fact, Johnson's book is the only one I've read that actually tells it like it is. If you're considering buying a manufactured home, or even if you've already bought one, you should buy The Manufactured Home Buyer's Handbook (ISBN 0-7864-2209-2). While Taylor, Burnside, and Grissim are sugar-coating the industry and basically getting their facts wrong over and over, Johnson's narrative rings true to experience. He tells you how you can get a good manufactured home and save a ton of money without getting ripped off like so many others have.
Industry insider.......2004-03-28
After reviewing Grissom's and Burnside's books on the subject, I came across Taylor's version and found his book "Manufactured Homes: The Buyer's Guide" to be profoundly accurate and useful, not only for the buyer, but as a training guide for new sales staffers within our company. This book is user-friendly and literally packed with lists and charts, which make the decision-making process of buying a mobile home much simpler and logical.
Inaccurate and shallow.......2004-03-22
This lightweight booklet is terribly researched with numerous factual errors, particularly in the first four chapters. Later, when giving buying advice, it assumes you are a low-credit, high-risk buyer. A much better book is John Grissim's.
A step-by-step guide for aspiring home owners.......2004-03-07
Ably researched and accessibly written by Steven Taylor, Manufactured Homes: The Buyers Guide -- How To Realize Your Dream In A Manufactured Home is a "user friendly", step-by-step guide for aspiring home owners who are new to the phenomenon of manufactured homes -- domestic dwellings which are designed, cut, and constructed according to a standardized format. From surveying how such homes are built; to understanding warranties; selecting a floor plan; financing the new home; meticulously shopping for the right house in the right location, and more, Manufactured Homes: The Buyers Guide is a superb primer and introduction to preparing for home ownership before committing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Enhanced with lists of manufacturers, trade associations, state agencies, and federal departments relevant to manufactured homes, Manufactured Homes: The Buyer's Guide is the best introduction to the subject available to non-specialist general readers today!

Customer Reviews:
Bravo!.......1999-06-11
A great reference book for those needing to decipher hazardous waste regulatory jargon. I've wasted my money on other so-called interpretive guides, which merely summarized the law. Ho hum. Wagner's book goes much further to explain and decipher the regulations, not just the law. Very helpful!
Finally, a book that fully and correctly explains RCRA!.......1999-01-26
A colleague shared this book with me to help explain some meaty aspect of RCRA. I finally understand what is required so that I can talk intelligently with the regulators. I subsequently went out and purchased my own copy. This book is great as a reference. I highly recommend you obtain a copy if you are as mystified by the RCRA regs as most of us are.

The Nepa Reference Guide
ASIN: 0471252727 |
Book Description
Praise for The NEPA Planning Process
"The most comprehensive and detailed guide to the effective, as well as efficient, administration of NEPA to date."—Lynton K. Caldwell Consultant to the Senate Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs 91st Congress, 1968-70.
"Eccleston . . . has provided a commonsense guide for managers that illuminates the NEPA process with lucid discussions and commonsense guidance on how to navigate some of the most difficult challenges in NEPA practice."—Frederic March Environmental Scientist Sandia National Laboratories.
"Here is the essential book for every NEPA practitioner. The NEPA Planning Process explains the process for preparing adequate and effective impact statements, and for complying with NEPA's statutory requirements. . . . Especially recommended."—Daniel R. Mandelker Stamper Professor of Law Washington University.
As the first modern federal environmental statute, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was passed by Congress in 1969. All federal agencies must comply with NEPA's sweeping mandate. Yet, amazingly, until now, there has been no authoritative, single-source guide for navigating the complexities of the NEPA process. Authored by the leading national expert on the subject, this book fills that gap in the literature.
The first comprehensive guide of its kind, The NEPA Planning Process offers clear, detailed explanations of all relevant requirements, with emphasis on managing and enhancing the effectiveness of federal planning. Designed to save hours of painstaking research while minimizing costs and risk of litigation, it integrates critical information from hundreds of sources—including the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ)'s NEPA regulations and guidance, presidential and EPA directives, case law, recent research from nationally recognized experts, and the professional experiences of NEPA practitioners.
The NEPA Planning Process is an indispensable professional resource for environmental scientists and engineers engaged in NEPA practice. It is also a valuable working resource for project planners, regulators, citizens groups, and attorneys.

Redeveloping Brownfields: Landscape Architects, Site Planners, Developers
ASIN: 0070527687 |
Book Description
The most practical, up-to-date guide for turning Brownfields into Greenfields
This ready-to-use, how-to manual--edited by active developers who have bought, remediated, and sold brownfields--gives you a commanding look at one of today's leading environmental issues. Filled with the latest hands-on tools, Harold and Robert Rafson's step-by-step book simplifies the task of removing the barriers to redevelopment that plague environmentally distressed properties.
Brownfields goes beyond the legal and technical issues that preoccupy other current books, to focus on all the critical aspects of putting together a successful brownfields project--mortgages, marketing, and more. Complete with case studies drawn from the authors' own experience, this guide is required reading not just for owners or developers, but for every stakeholder--from environmental regulators, to bankers, realtors and prospective buyers.
Customer Reviews:
Revitalizing underutilized industrial sites---how it's done.......1999-10-29
The authors clearly present the factors that, on one hand, allow industrial and commercial property eyesores to exist, and on the other hand, those factors that can redevelop them into valuable modern real estate. The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewers have participated in brownfields remediation designs and in the development of estimated costs for remediation, sometimes extending decades into the future. Brownfields are, according to an EPA definition, "...abandoned, idled, or underused industrial and commercial sites where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination that can add cost, time and uncertainty to a redevelopment project."
A few decades ago industrialists eyeing real estate for acquisition would be concerned about the use they could foresee, the asking price, zoning potential, the neighborhood, and a few other particulars. Rarely were they deeply concerned about what had gone on at the property in past years. Now, one of the first things a prospective buyer wants to know is "what might have gone on here in past years that has resulted in contamination of structures, the grounds, subsurface, or any water bodies." Property owners have similar concerns, but they have more information. So that both buyers and sellers wonder what magnitude of environmental remediation costs would be required for various redevelopment projects. The authors take the reader through the major considerations of both buyer and seller. They treat both the private and municipal redeveloper.
Their case studies, though largely drawn from their Chicago experiences, emphasize the careful planning and execution steps required in redevelopment anywhere. Based on data from less than 200 sites, the cost of brownfields redevelopment has been estimated to be just under $60,000 per acre. Cleanup of contamination, where it occurs, has been estimated at 8% of the total cost of redevelopment. The authors make an excellent point that much more cooperation is needed between interested parties to expand brownfields redevelopment. Venture groups are needed consisting of environmental scientists and engineers, capital providers, insurance specialists, real estate experts, and an experience project management team. Not to be forgotten is "due diligence". For a brownfields purchaser this means an in-depth analysis of the physical, economic, and legal conditions of any property in question. The authors describe how this analysis must have much more depth to it than the due diligence involved with purchase of an uncompromised industrial property. Federal, state, and local environmental officials, and governmental officials must appreciate the importance of rejuvenating unused brownfields as opposed to converting more fertile farms to industrial properties. And finally those officials must have the will to find ways to make a remediation happen. Individuals in all of the above occupations are well-advised to read this book.
As a model of an up-to-date state initiative to hasten brownfields remediation, the authors provide the details of the Illinois Pollution Control Board's Tiered Approach to Corrective Action Objectives ("TACO").
