5 out of 5 stars An Excellent choice.......2003-01-11

I would really recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn JAVA Wireless. The authors really explain the architecture of J2ME really well and better then the average book on J2ME. They have a good chapter on VXML, WML, and WMLSRIPT. You need to be an experienced developer to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Want to add Wireless Java skills to your resume?.......2002-10-10

Just got this book and have read most of it. Finally a Wireless Java book that talks about something more than J2ME! The campus portal app is a nice touch and ties all of the previous discussions together. Great fluff-free chapters on MIDP, Web Services, and VoiceXML. I also liked the underlying theme of tying everything together with J2EE.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Wireless Book.......2002-10-08

This is the best Wireless programming book I have found. It helps enhance your Wireless skill set while leveraging your existing Java knowledge, and shows how to actually combine today's wireless technologies for real business applications. It takes a great, all-encompassing approach, and the end-to-end Campus Portal application pull everything together. This book gives you everything you need.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I Found It.......2002-10-08

This book really saved me. Taking your applications wireless is a major headache, and it was driving me crazy. There is not a lot of help available out there, but in this book, I finally found good, readable information that shows how to integrate J2ME with J2EE.

5 out of 5 stars A Review of "IP Location" and Why "Location" is Important Today.......2007-01-10

"IP Location" by Martin Dawson, James Winterbottom and Martin Thomson appeals to a broad audience, and is equally applicable to industry as it is to academia. It can be used by corporations who are looking to be a part of the location application value chain, by service providers and carriers who hope to offer location applications to consumers, to government agencies who are looking to build infrastructure to support their national security initiatives, and to academics who are interested in building location applications, or to provide students with a solid introduction to this area of research.

Chapters 1 and 2 provide a background of location services in the IP domain and the Geographic Location Privacy model. Chapters 3 and 4 provide an overview of the Location Information Server (LIS), its architecture and specific protocols. Chapters 5 through to 8 describe how different IP access mediums can make use of the LIS, and the final chapter is written on the important topic of privacy considerations for internet location with a focus on legal challenges. As Ian Hopkins writes in the foreword, "resilience, redundancy, reliability, security, interoperability and efficiency are all the ingredients of a good book".

The book is impressively filled with a great number of `easy to interpret' technical diagrams rich in their presentation. The diagrams present architectures, messaging routines, xml code, policy documentation, configurations. Somehow the authors (who are all practitioners of Andrew Network Solutions) have been able to describe complex matters at a level that is comprehensible by even the layperson. The book also contains five rich appendices including relevant specifications, schemas, protocols and extensions that are timely to the extended list of IP Location stakeholders. It also has an exhaustive glossary on the topic. Of note is how well-structured the book is- taking the reader on a guided tour of the rise of IP Location from the "what" to the "how" to the "when" to the "what ifs".

Location is everywhere. And location means different things to different people and is articulated in different ways. Every location request has a context, and transactions can be triggered based on a location. Things, animals, and people can be located and their proximity is meaningful to varying degrees. For instance, things belong to people, and certainly people always wish to know where their things are, and where they might be in proximity to a building or to their peers or their family. Whether you are on a holiday with your family, at a local supermarket shopping, working in a manufacturing plant, or a doctor in a hospital, location information is plentiful, but not always instant, accessible, and ready for consumption.

It is this notion of instantaneous communications, and instantaneous location determination that pervades this book. What are the means with which I can determine where someone is, based on an IP device they are carrying? How do I go about solving this problem? What elements do I require in a network? What protocols are needed to establish communications? How do I know if the location being recorded is an accurate representation of reality?

Location applications can be classified in many different ways- one could categorise these into control applications, convenience applications or care applications; mass market vs niche, mandatory versus voluntary subscription, enterprise vs service provider grade, push vs pull, tagging, tracking, tracing and triggering applications, government versus commercial vs personal. Today we are seeing already, the adoption of location services for friend finder applications, fleet management, points of interest, navigation and for tracking people especially minors and the elderly.

In the not-to-distant future, location applications will not only be used by emergency services personnel to respond to 000 calls but will be ingrained into the very fibre of our daily transactions. The trajectory of this technology is far-reaching- whether we consider the use of lockable GPS wristwatches for children or RFID implants for medical tracking.

This book goes beyond IP Location and focuses on providing a roadmap for real solutions and standards which are currently receiving a great deal of institutional support. It is groundbreaking as it grants a vision that everyone will have access to location information and that humans too by default will be considered analogous to a node in the network by their very attachment to their PDA or laptop.

If you are working in the field of LBS, I would strongly recommend this book as a part of your personal library. At the moment, there is nothing else like this on the market.

4 out of 5 stars Mobile or desiring to be? - Excellent primer for execs..........2002-11-27

Mr. Brans does a superb job of presenting much of what is going on in the wireless world today.

To be fair, I did not read the entire book, only sections that I found interesting. However, the portions I did read, chpts 1-4, 10-12 were fascinating and on target in many respects.

As corporations begin aligning themselves into the categories mentioned, I was wondering where hybrid companies that have created versatile new concepts, especially outside of the US, would fit in the model. Where would companies such as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) that aren't quite NOs but have some of the capabilities of (Wireless Application Gateway providers) WAGs or (System Integrators) SIs in enabling mobilization and reselling it -just renting space from NOs- fit in the author's model? There seemed to be a few missing gaps, but covered the US market fairly thoroughly.

Chapter 11 was extremely informative, but I am still perplexed by "wireless technology skills" and the author's definition of this, specifically in his SWOT analyses. Saying that an enterprise application vendor doesn't have wireless skills is unclear, especially as many of these enterprise app vendors are also WAG vendors or Platform vendors. Companies such as Oracle or IBM are perfect examples where they do not suffer the same weaknesses. Does this present a major competitive advantage in the market?

A second point with respect to this very notion is that, in general, "wireless technology skills" can be easily emulated, learned, and implemented as many small companies are crowding the space and popping up regularly. This suggests that the real commoditization will be in the value of wireless technology skills rather than other segments as the author suggests.

The book was exceptional in most other respects, containing detailed facts on the wireless markets, their evolution, and even an excellent resource base to acquire further knowledge. Even with the biased focus on a few select companies, the book covers the market's underlying agenda.

The author presented information with a terse crispness but added a social element in terms of context and example to make it readable. A great primer if you are an executive, a CIO, or someone making a decision to commit resources in mobile technology. Comparable to Wireless Crash Course by Bedell in quality, with more of a business perspective.

    4 out of 5 stars Mobilize - a misnomer, but certainly advantageous.......2002-11-26

Though the author uses mobilizing an enterprise in his title, he really means applying wireless technology to an already mobile enterprise. Many of the issues presented applies to standardizing mobile accessibility across the enterprise. The book starts off with an excellent analogy for untested technology - Magic, unknown, uncertain, untested, and unproven. This leverages his book for a thematic value throughout to make for an interesting development of current day technology.

To be fair, I did not read the entire book, only sections that I found interesting. However, the portions I did read, chpts 1-4, 10-12 were fascinating and on target in many respects.

The author lays out the framework for an elegant model categorizing technology providers and the corporate structure. As corporations begin aligning themselves into the categories mentioned, I was wondering where hybrid companies that have created versatile new concepts, especially outside of the US, would fit in his model.

Companies such as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) that aren't quite NOs, but have some of the skills and capabilities of WAGs or SIs since their main competency is in enabling the mobilization and reselling it and just renting space from NOs would fit.

Chapter 11 was extremely informative, but I am still perplexed by "wireless technology skills" and the author's definition of this, specifically in his SWOT analyses. Saying that an enterprise application vendor doesn't have these skills is unclear, especially as many of these enterprise app vendors are WAG vendors or Platform vendors.

This suggests that the real commoditization will be in the value of wireless technology skills rather than other segments rather than network operations (although there is always the possibility of both being commoditized)

The author suggests that there may be a convergence of enterprise app vendors and WAG vendors, the former gobbling up the latter. I think this is already in progress and will no doubt become a reality unless the smaller WAG vendors either become enterprise app vendors or can find specific niches where enterprise app vendors are unwilling to enter.

The book as a whole provided a business perspective to what seems to be a technical issue. It was clear in many respects, and filled with useful information to better understand what it means to manage a mobile system. Although there was some bias in selecting companies for case discussion, these are considered the norm in any competitive industry. The terse, crispness of the book with a solid, social element provides for good reading and highly informative review of the wireless industry today and tommorrow.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely well written and concise book.......2002-11-25

Pat Brans has done a masterful job of taking a complex subject such as mobility and wireless and boiling it down to its most important components. Besides his ability to explain wireless technology in simplistic terms, Brans delivers a compelling guide for business executives grappling with difficult decisions regarding why/when/how should I deploy mobility and what can our company expect to gain from a revenue generation/cost savings/customer satisfaction perpspective? Finally, the best part of this book is the abundant use of practical, real-world examples (such as the business process diagrams in Chapter 10 involving pharmaceutical sales reps) to help the reader clearly understand the benefits of mobility and wireless technology as applied to a business challenge.

5 out of 5 stars A big step in the right direction.......2002-10-18

This book is by far more than just a comprehensive collection of facts and figures. The author, having a no fear approach to technology, never looses sight of the business aspects. His understanding of mobility manifests itself not only in the awareness of tools, but rather in his holistic approach to make mobile technology work for you and your enterprise without having to reengineer your business processes.
Hence, anyone who feels the urge to implement mobile solutions in their business should first consult this book... or just spend a few thousand on consultancy. Your choice.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2002-10-10

If you want to increase the effectiveness of your workforce, this is a must read book. The concepts are clearly laid out and it is written in an easy to understand language, explaining all the mobility buzzwords in laymans terms.

After reading this book I feel confident about talking to the vendors and consultants with all the latest solutions. A worthwhile investment for any manager with responsibility for field based sales people or service engineers.

5 out of 5 stars Wrapped up with a bow and delivered to your doorstep.......2002-04-10

Enjoyed the book immensly. Author(s) do an excellent job in outlining the issues and providing the necessary background as to how and why things developed and insight on decision points and future offerings. Author did not bite on the hardware red herring but stayed the course on issues and requirements. Only crticism was over marketing of Broadbeam middleware woven into middleware discussion. This is easily excused when compared with other "white paper" type offerings. Very easy reading, recommend for technical and non technical alike.

5 out of 5 stars Well written review and informative.......2002-01-29

I recently read "Wireless Data for the Enterprise" and found it well written and informative. In addition to the history of wireless data and a section on determining whether the wireless approach is right for an organization, I enjoyed the case histories. The writers have also included practical tips on choosing mobile devices, network providers and developing wireless applications. Finally, for those like myself who aren't "techies," it includes a handy glossary of terms at the end for reference purposes. Most books written by business executives tend to be dull or promotional, but I found this enjoyable reading and informative.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to wireless data.......2001-12-31

When I opened the cover of this book I knew very little about wireless data, which I had to rectify as I contemplated deploying it for my business. I forced myself to start reading and by page two knew that I had picked a real winner. It's a technology book that reads like a novel. The graphics, case studies, and elegant prose make it one of the best business books I've read in a long time. It took me through the issues, steps, and considerations I will face in adopting the technology, making no attempt to sugar-coat the challenge, but presenting enough success stories to make me understand that it is doable.

1 out of 5 stars Poor writing and not imformative - A definite pass!.......2001-12-20

I picked up this book because my company is looking at ways to use wireless technology as a business tool with our field sales reps.

Despite the hype and promise that this book claims, I can honestly say that it was a complete waste of time and money.

4 out of 5 stars A useful tool for business executives.......2001-10-30

Wireless Data for the Enterprise is an invaluable resource to any manager looking to add wireless functionality to their organization. The book addresses both the business and technical aspects of identifying, developing and implementing wireless data solutions to improve the productivity of a mobile workforce. Unlike many books that tend to deal with the subject on only a conceptual level, Faigen and Fridman discuss the key issues facing wireless applications from a real world perspective, providing numerous cases studies and useful project execution guides. I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering undertaking a wireless project in their own organization, or who just wants to develop a better understanding of the application of wireless data communications in general.

    1 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing.......2001-11-09

Waste of time and money. All the information in this book is a result of one week browsing the web. Author lacks any logical categorization, jumps from topic to topic. Most of the book has absolutely nothing in common with the subject.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive.......2001-05-19

This book is gem of a resource. By using figures and tables throughout the book, author has made the reading and understanding of concepts easy and fun. It's rare to find a book which is good in depth and yet, is readable. The Chapter on technology is by far the best. I am having all my sales staff read this to get a good understanding of the solutions available in the market and the market itself. Enjoy.

To the potential user, this is a sea of information to check out, and to the entrepreneur or a business manager; it provides a seed for business ideas.

The book presents the reader with a wireless primer outlining a wireless network and its component. The brief discussion of time-lines associated with adoption of wireless technologies adopted in Europe, Japan and America sets the scene for future trends. The issues that are driving the developments of Internet applications into the wireless world are discussed concisely. Widespread adoption of standard protocols such as WAP, Bluetooth and XML, improved accuracy in position location and convergence of communications and computing will facilitate the adaptation of the Web-centric Internet model to the wireless world. While making the case for wireless Internet enterprise applications the author maintains a balanced view. The author cites the example of iMode to illustrate that there is a demand and awareness amongst consumers for wireless applications. However, he correctly points out that, all of that can go waste if there is a dearth of useful and exciting information to the user or oddly enough even if there is an deluge of information on the screen.

The chapter titled Technology Landscape is the strength of the book. It reviews in further detail the computing technologies such as transcoding and markup, web clipping, Jini, IP based technologies, compression and encryption, Smart Cards, Smart materials, and wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, HomeRF, Position Location Technologies, GPS and Smart Antennas. By the end of the chapter, you cover a lot of ground on a variety of technology options. It is brief and relevant. It was felt that sections on the popular WAP could have been more detailed while sparing those like Biometrics for authentication. Nevertheless, it provides the background for a discussion on the players of the value chain and how the content filters through to the consumers. The author outlines three approaches to wireless Internet solutions - accessing desktop email/ calendar applications, modifying existing Web-based applications to wireless devices and building fresh e-business solutions. The discussion of the third approach makes a useful reading because it provides a quick checklist for defining and implementing a wireless e-business application. Among the critical success factors, the author suggests that simplicity of end user experience, presentation of a subset of user web-site content and device-independent rendering of underlying services and data on disparate devices will be the decisive factors in early adoption of this exciting technology.

In summary, the book meets its objective in providing a good macroscopic view of wireless Internet applications. The examples, illustrations, charts and the web-site resources complement the text in making it a "un-put-down-able" book. It is what it is - an excellent "tech brief". A web-site with a list of all the URLs mentioned in the book would have been a great plus.

4 out of 5 stars Great book. Highly recommended!.......2001-01-08

In his very first book, Sharma has exhibited great command on the material and his presentation is extremely lucid. In packing the book with practical information about the industry and nearly 150 illustrations to clearly articulate the material, the author reviews the wireless internet marketplace, in a very reader-friendly fashion. If you are new to wireless, this is a good book to get your feet wet. If you are not new to the field, it is a great book to get up to speed with the state-of-the-art. This book contains a good overview of the wide spectrum of wireless technologies.

The following are the highlights of the book: overview of the wireless internet realm, overview of competing technologies, references to the key players in the relevant industry segments, extremely informative graphics and diagrams, and the great set of references (URLs and books) at the very end. The author's ability to weave seamlessly in to the middle of the book, several great articles by industry experts speaks volumes to his writing ability and flexibility.

The chapters on market drivers and evaluation of competing technologies are very well written. The book (Chapters 3 and 7 in particular) can effectively bring a corporate decision-maker up to speed with the state-of-the-art and help her/him make better-informed decisions by separating the chaff from the real stuff.

The book contains a concise history (a bit too concise, though) of the development of the wireless world. A little bit more detail to the evolution of the wireless internet would have been more helpful. Similarly, the section on Wireless Internet tomorrow seemed to lack punch. However, (in cutting the author some slack), that is more due to the nature of the industry than anything else. On the whole, I have never seen a book without any shortcomings; however, I must say, this book is the best overview of wireless enterprise applications that I have seen to date. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down easily. I look forward to Sharma's next book.

Wireless e-mail represents an early opportunity for mobile data services in the enterprise. The Yankee Group ’s 2002 Corporate Wireless Survey indicates that almost 80 percent of large corporations consider e-mail a driver for deploying a wireless wide-area data solution. In the near term, corporations will deploy wireless e-mail selectively, granting access only to key mobile employees, such as executives, salespeople, and IT staff.Wireless e-mail will not become as pervasive as it is within a fixed environment, but the decreasing cost of devices, wireless network connectivity, and IT administration and support will speed adoption within enterprises over the next 5 to 7 years. Corporate e-mail solutions are already available and are being sold to buyers at the corporate IT level, and to employees. The majority of wireless e-mail products fall into one of three categories: Desktop redirector solutions designed for deployment by individual users,SMBs,and workgroups Behind-the-firewall solutions designed for centralized IT implementation and administration Network-based solutions designed to be sold and managed by carriers Vendors offering these solutions today have developed products that present enterprises with deployment options. However, vendors will need to design solutions with more user-friendly interfaces, support for emerging next-generation and Wi-Fi networks, more robust offline capabilities, and multiple synchronization.
