Good wireless programing book; ok treatment of other topics.......2001-10-06
"Wireless Internet & Mobile Business How to Program" contains a good discussion of the various elements of programming for wireless devices. The reader will come away from the programming chapters with a solid understanding of how to implement simple structures. The chapter that introduces algorithms is clear and concise; the chapter that introduces control structures is easy to understand (if somewhat odd in its ordering). The chapter that introduces Object Oriented Programming provides a clear introduction to objects. This approach, using several real-world examples, is a good way to orient the non OO-minded to the use of objects. It covers the different aspects of objects in the abstract well. However, it could use a clearer explanation of why developers should use objects instead of the regular, top-down structured programming they've (possibly just) learned. For those new to programming, this is essential.
The book is not really just a "How to Program" manual, as are some of Deitel & Deitel's other similarly named texts. (Their excellent C++ and Java books come to mind.) Some of the chapters, like the one on employment opportunities, are in danger of becoming obsolete quickly. However, overall this is a solid text with good treatment of wireless programming and other loosely related topics.

Fantastic Overview and well documented.......2005-11-11
Superb read, I especially like the 2 chapter Wireless Network overview and the Wirelesee Value for explaining complex issues in a straightforward manner. This book brings you up to speed on the industry, business value and corporate interest in the mobility space. A must buy!!
Good first few chapters.......2005-09-26
My objective was to gain a better understanding of the potential business value of wireless mobility. I am in Sales and new to the wireless mobility space. The technology primer chapters were pretty good with the exception of some Microsoft bias (one of the authors is a Microsoft employee). The book proceeded to go into CGE&Y's approach to gaining business value. Perhaps this book is better suited to an executive who is grappling with understanding how to quantify the value and is interested in purchasing CGE&Y's approach. I did not care for the bias.
Easy Read!!!.......2005-07-22
I enjoyed this book very much. Having a technology background, I knew about this topic before I read the book but I did a learn some new things. It's also a good tool to learn how to explain mobile technologies in simple terms to non-techies and business people. Easy and quick read!!!
Comprehensive, Must-Have Guide to Mobile Technologies.......2005-01-17
This book is super informative, nicely written, and easy to understand. I would recommend it highly to large enterprises interested in mobile technologies and to individuals who are interested in learning more about the burgeoning filed of mobile computing. Highly recommended!
A Must Read.......2005-01-15
This book is an excellent insight into Mobility and Wireless. Good for both newcomers and those inside the industry, I look forward to the next one from these authors.

Customer Reviews:
Thorough, insightful, and clear.......2003-11-14
This book serves as an excellent introduction to the field of m-commerce. It thoroughly covers the field in an insightful and clear manner. It has served me well as the foundation and starting point for web based retrievals of standard documents and white papers.
Excellent analysis.......2003-03-13
The book is a definitive source for someone who has little knowledge about the field of mobile commerce. The beauty of the text lies in the way the topics transition from a novice level to an advanced user level. The author has covered both the technological and the business aspects of mobile applications. One part that definitely needs to be mentioned here is the description of public and private keys for secure communication that was incredible. Nowhere had i read such a lucid description of the public-private key concept. The book is an easy read but extremely insightful. A must buy for those of you who want to keep up with the latest in technology.
A complete reference book for m-Commerce.......2002-11-17
I picked up M-Commerce as I was curious where the mobile computing market was going. From where I was standing, I see a lot of hype and was not particularly impressed with the early WAP based services. Although relatively brief, Dr. Sadeh have managed to provide a good overall description of the mobile computing market, past, present and future as well as presented simply and clearly the technologies involved, the problems that need to be overcome and the successful business models that have been employed. As a guide to mobile commerce and it's potential for profitable business growth, I would recommend it highly to executives and other interested parties who are either thinking of jumping on the bandwagon or figuring out how increase competitiveness by leveraging on it.
Good overview of M-Commerce technologies and service.......2002-10-22
Sadeh's "M-Commerce: Technologies, Services and Business Models" is an outstanding introduction to this, the next step in the e-business revolution.
Sadeh's writing style is very simple to understand and follow and he does an outstanding job of relating the material to everyday life through good, real-life examples. He cites current m-commerce usage in Japan and Europe and relates how it could be used here at home. Among his prime examples are NTTDoComo's I-mode, Nordea's WAP as well as vendors such as Ericsson, Nokia, and AT&T. You also get a good grounding in the technology and history of the mobile industry as well as best practice business tips that industry innovators have used to gain their competitive advantage. Overall, this is a great look at the technologies behind m-commerce and the various types of services it can afford.
Here is the listing of topics Sadeh addresses:
1. The Buzz Behind M-Commerce: Proliferation of mobile devices, personalized and location-sensitive services, new usage scenarios, etc
2. The M-Commerce Value Chain: Business models, content providers, aggregators, software vendors, equipment vendors, network operators
3. The Transition to 3G: 2G technologies, 2.5G technologies, wireless architecture
4. The Mobile Internet: TCP/IP on wired and mobile Internet, WAP architecture, WAP protocols
5. Mobile Security and Payment: Cryptography, digital signature, certificate authorities, public and private key encryption
6. M-Commerce Services: Information services, directory services, banking and trading, e-tailing, e-ticketing, entertainment, business applications
7. Next-Gen M-Commerce: Personalized services, location-sensitive services, global positioning services
Overall, this book is extremely easy to read and more importantly, a good learning tool. This book was used as the text for an m-commerce course I took during the fall of 2002. Whether you are studying this subject independently or whether you are an instructor looking to use this book for your course, you cannot go wrong with Sadeh's "M-Commerce: Technologies, Services and Business Models."
Highly Recommended
Structured, principle-based, & balanced between tech. & biz.......2002-09-15
I have been following recent mobile commerce developments from both business model and technical perspectives and found that this Carnegie Mellon professor's book provides an excellent introduction to m-commerce, including recent developments in Korea and Japan.
The main goodness of this book is that it is structured (not messy) and principle-based (not superficial).
In addition, the way of explanation of this book is reliable and balanced, so I expect the life of this book is longer than some other messy books on 'mobile' stuffs.
I believe this book is also perfect as a textbook on m-commerce or supplement on e-commerce.

Suitable for the IT manager or developer who wants to get the "big picture" surrounding mobile commerce (m-commerce) of the present and near future, Paul May's Mobile Commerce: Opportunities, Applications, and Technologies of Wireless Business provides a smart, business-savvy guide to what's on the horizon with the wireless Web.
This book provides a good mix of enthusiasm tempered with realism about what mobile commerce will mean for all types of business. After outlining the rise of mobile phones across the world, the author delves into what types of m-commerce applications will potentially thrive. From travel and electronic ticketing to gambling and games, the author outlines a promising vision for the future, illustrated with current online ventures (often from Europe and the U.K.). As this book went to press last year, there are a few anachronisms after the dot-com fallout. (While Webvan, for example, is no longer an example of successful e-commerce, the force of the argument here for m-commerce is still quite convincing.)
Later on, the author discusses the infrastructure of mobile commerce, including the differences between traditional and mobile networks. Next comes a full tour of today's mobile devices, from phones and PDAs to smart cards and even wireless devices for cars (which are a prime market for new m-commerce applications). There's also a quick tour of WAP and WML for creating wireless user interfaces. This technical material is suitable for IT managers and even developers new to the world of wireless. The book concludes with some predictions about how the move to wireless will impact society, along with some issues that may help or hinder its adoption.
All in all, this title provides a good introduction to the new possibilities of wireless, one with a nicely worldwide perspective. As North American companies get onboard with mobile commerce, this guide to how m-commerce has been implemented in Europe and Asia can benefit any decision maker or planner with some good ideas, along with providing some intelligent predictions about how m-commerce might change the ways companies do business in the very near future. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: The emerging mobile device market (trends and predictions, market drivers); business opportunities for mobile commerce (m-commerce); moving beyond e-commerce into m-commerce; customer relationships; mobile services described (including e-mail and messaging, location finding, and digital content products); consumer m-commerce (travel, ticketing, banking, stocks, gambling, games, and shopping); business m-commerce (mobile markets, collaboration and better management through m-commerce); m-commerce network technologies; global, local, and personal networks; cellular networks and standards described; third-generation (3G) networks; types of mobile devices (including phones, pagers, PDAs, smart cards, and cards); overview of WAP and WML; XML and mobile content; payment systems and security issues; societal issues surrounding m-commerce (including privacy, health, access, geography, obsolescence, and cost per customer); and reference to m-commerce resources.
Book Description
This book provides the context, architectures, case studies, and intelligent analysis that will help the reader grasp the rapidly evolving subject of mobile commerce. May explains the technological aspects of mobile commerce to business decision makers and the business models to the technologists who design and build these electronic systems. It is the one book all relevant parties in a company can read to ensure common understanding. Topics include devices, technologies, applications, standards, security, and more.
Customer Reviews:
A great starting point.......2001-09-17
This is a broad treatment of M-commerce and is aimed at a broad audience of business and technical readers. Usually books of this nature are mediocre because of the trade-offs compromises in scope and content that need to be made to accommodate a wide audience. In the case of the book, though, it isn't the case.
First, the book is organized by (1) Business opportunity, (2) Applications, (3) Technology, (4) Issues and (5) Directory of M-Commerce Applications. The first four sections are both insightful and invaluable. The directory of M-commerce applications, in my opinion, does not add any value to the book because information of this nature changes so rapidly that it's inaccurate before a book is even published.
What I like about the book is the even treatment of opportunities that are inherent in M-commerce, including some insights into why Europe does not have the advantages that normally come from being early adopters (in spite of the pessimists who cite a "two year head start" while ignoring the U.S. leadership in technology implementation when we do get around to it), and the interesting view of WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), which many believe to be just an interim - the author advises to put resources and effort into WAP and make it part of a business strategy if you want to be an M-commerce player.
The survey of technologies and standards are also useful, even if given somewhat superficial treatment. The value is you are exposed to all of the factors and considerations with which to make informed decisions or gain an understanding of the M-commerce landscape. In this respect the applications and technology sections of the book can be viewed as a primer.
Overall, this is an excellent book for learning about M-commerce from business and technical points of view because it provides a context and keen insights in both domains.

Excellent overview of mobile e-business.......2006-01-26
The rise of the Internet and e-commerce has, over the past decade, dramatically change the business models and basic assumptions of practically every business organization in the developed world. Today, mobile/unwired business is roughly at the same stage of development that e-commerce was 10 years ago. What is the current state of the art in unwired business, and where is it headed? Will it become a as large a transforming force as e-commerce before it did? The book Unwired Business, by Stuart Barnes and Eusebio Scornavacca, is an excellent starting point for answering these questions. The book's rich, illustrative set of case studies provide many insights for both managers and researchers to better understand the new and emerging world of mobile e-commerce.

A surprising array of sophisticated electronic applications that have no need for a tethering umbilical cord are already transforming the way we live, work, and play. Going Wireless analyzes many of these personal, professional, and leisure-time operations now in use by organizations ranging from Sears to the Dave Matthews Band to the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, and projects ways their descendants could become even more ubiquitous. Jaclyn Easton, a Los Angeles Times columnist who profiled e-commerce pioneers in StrikingItRich.com, looks here at how the Internet revolution is evolving into a wireless reality. "Have you ever waved a Speedpass wand to buy gas at a Mobil station? That's wireless," she writes. "Did you ever rent a car with a global positioning system giving you directions as you drove? Did you know that clothing manufacturers are now sewing wireless technology into garments to track the item through both the supply chain and the retail chain?" In a manner that allows her to address weighty concepts without losing those of us who admit to being challenged by technology, Easton examines ways companies are using wireless technology externally to serve their customers and clients and internally to support their employees and suppliers. She additionally devotes a section to new businesses ("tracking what matters to you most"), markets ("Generation Y-erless"), and challenges (including privacy and security). The result is both provocative and enlightening. --Howard Rothman

M-Commerce, L-Commerce, things communicating with things.......2006-03-08
Mobile commerce offers the hope of faster access to information for the consumer. M-Commerce builds on both internet and wireless communication devices. Internet servers push small applications to WiFi devices and these applications, in turn, make information requests through WiFi portals back to the server. The WiFi interface improves speed to acquire information for the consumer increasing the likelihood of a purchase; the WiFi interface can submit billing information for payment processing with one tap to confirm credit card usage for bill payment; a confirmation code is displayed on the WiFi device and used to validate pickup of the merchandise; and speed is the motivating factor like the fast food chain in time performance. If by the middle of the decade, "the only way to reach your customers is via the internet, you'll be limiting your customer base". M-commerce brings the store to the consumer wirelessly and it assists the consumer in price comparison. The consumer can talk directly to the WiFi device reducing time to navigate menu selection. Sophisticated voice recognition software will eliminate the need to display all available choices. Instead, the software will use context and subject matter as it relates to voice interpretation too determine choice.
Location commerce is the result of the law. All cell phones or devices capable of making a call must be capable for an external call center too pinpoint a caller within a few feet. Position based commerce will become the primary source of new business referrals. As the consumer moves from one zone to another information is served up to the WiFi interface from local based directories. The user will enter in what they want and a list of services based on proximity will be offered through their PDA. National chains will be able to offer localized pricing of their products and services. The localized directories will be able to determine availability and make referrals to other stores within a certain mile radius, if the product is unavailable. The idea is that the quicker you get your customer the merchandise, the more you will sell.
A decentralized Transportation Wifi network potentially offers a massive opportunity. Suppose, each car was installed with a WiFi device that could communicate with car around it, accessing: speed, breaking, turning, and sudden stops. Potentially, the Wifi device could stop all accidents involving abrupt slow downs in traffic. Additionally, the auto wifi device could communicate with Wifi portal along the road querying for restaurant prices and availability, sleeping arrangements and prices, and music downloads. Billboards being replaced by high speed Wifi portals and massive internet servers bring services too consumers on the road.
Surprise - the world is going wireless :-).......2005-04-05
Surprise - the world is going wireless. Well it's not really a surprise. In the U.S., we're just behind the times. In fact, in most respects related to wireless / mobile connectivity, the U.S. places third behind Asia, and Europe. But, never underestimate America. We've come from behind before and we can do it again. The problem is that the U.S. is PC centric and up until now this has lead to lackluster interest in smartphone and advance mobile communications.
With the oncoming rush of Wi-Max and related technologies, the time to embrace wireless is NOW. Easton's book will help you open your mind to the future of wireless and the possibilities it represents. The book highlights that without going wireless we are still "tied" to our desks - even with laptops. Throughout Going Wireless, next-generation applications are shown, not for technology sake, but for their distinct potential in business.
Divided into three sections, Going Wireless is a most compelling read:
SECTION 1 - USING M-COMMERCE TO OWN YOUR CUSTOMERS AND CLIENTS
SECTION 2 - THE WIRELESS WORKFORCE CONNECTS THE ENTERPRISE
SECTION 3: NEW BUSINESSES, NEW MARKETS, NEW CHALLENGES
For even more information, check out Going Wireless' website.

Emerging Technology - New Opportunities.......2004-02-05
Easton takes a very difficult subject and pieces together how wireless will make our lives simpler and faster still. We can get what we want, when we want it. We can make an order from a wireless hand held device and pick it up within minutes.
This book is made to order if you want to see where wireless is going. Easton is well researched and writes to inform.
A good book on new business opportunities.......2002-07-14
The book presents a wide range of business cases as well as scenarios where wireless technology is used or can be used. The author sometimes gets too excited about the potential of the technologies involved but she proves that, at least in some areas, wireless is revolutionizing business, creating business value by providing convenience, mobility, agility and improved data accuracy.
Awesome book! Exciting! Riveting! GET IT!.......2002-06-28
I probably sound like a paid endorser, but the truth is, this book is fantastic. It's written beautifully, contains riveting stories, and is packed with insights, ideas, trends, and more. It's written for anyone in business ready to cash in on the future. Wireless is the next big trend. This book shows you how to surf it to the bank. Get it. Get it right now. -- Joe Vitale, author of way too many books to list here, ...

Book Description
This new 275-page report from CTR provides a comprehensive analysis of two of today's most dynamic areas in information technology: computer telephony (CT) and wireless communications. The report explores how these applications can provide solutions to your organization's business needs.
Computer Telephony and Wireless Technologies: An Overview
Using the right technology in order to implement new business solutions will often determine the success or failure of the enterprise. CTR's new report, Computer Telephony and Wireless Technologies: Future Directions in Communications, provides a comprehensive analysis of two of today's most dynamic areas in information technology (IT): computer telephony (CT) and wireless communications. The report focuses on the business applications of CT and wireless communications and explains the benefits these technologies offer.
CTR's report provides critical information that will help IT managers understand the latest developments in communications and the impact these developments will have on the enterprise.
Computer Telephony Defined
CT was once defined as the integration of a company's computer system with its telephone system. While this is still true, today's complex computing infrastructures demand a more precise definition.
CTR's Computer Telephony and Wireless Technologies: Future Directions in Communications report defines CT as a platform that merges voice and data services in order to enable the development of integrated business applications.
The report describes the functionality of early CT applications and explores the applications that are popular today, including client/server (C/S)-based applications, unified messaging and mobility, call centers, and speech processing.
The report also evaluates the key issues surrounding Internet telephony, faxing over an intranet, and integrating CT with Web sites.
The Need for Wireless Technologies
Wireless technologies create a flexible infrastructure that is easily modified to reflect the ongoing and varying needs of the enterprise. With the number of mobile employees continuing to increase, this flexibility is now more important than ever.
Computer Telephony and Wireless Technologies: Future Directions in Communications explains the various public and private infrastructures that are required to support wireless communications for cellular, broadcasting, fixed point-to-point, and satellite networks.
The report also evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of wireless local area networks (LANs), identifies the wireless applications that address specific business needs, and explores the security issues surrounding mobile telephony.
In addition, the report offers a discussion of the recent convergence of wireless communications and CT and explains what this will mean for the future.

Book Description
"In my work (marketing studies) I need hard data. Prof. Lamont's work reveals why mobile Internet will play such a crucial role in the future of marketing studies:data-points can be gathered at the individual level, and related to proximity, timeliness and commerce activities. This is an eye-opener: in the future, you cannot do marketing without taking the mobile Internet into consideration." Ing. S. Meacci, President, Italian Marketing Association-AISMCEO Databank "No one understands and explains the market dynamics and forces of m-commerce better than Prof. Lamont. While I've been well aware of the implications of m-commerce in the small, only this book gave me the big, whole picture. This book is the definitive reference for mobile marketing." Steve Tendon, General Partner, Tendon Consulting Group, Sweden "Everyone agrees that the mobile Internet will create a paradigm shift in the ways that we work and live. There is less agreement, however, in where the business opportunities and pitfalls can be found in the wireless pace. Douglas Lamont's Conquering the Wireless World offers a clear and analytical plan to help wireless leaders develop winning marketing plans and strategies." David Jacobson, Partner, Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal & Organizer of First tuesday and Mobile Wednesdays in Chicago "With passion and precision, Professor Lamont bridges the gap between technology and marketing, and explains the new world of M-Commerce. His book is an "M" read for anyone that needs to know what the future holds for the new business game in town, the wireless Internet." Robert Sexauer, Managing Partner Trans@ctive Partners Ltd. Downers Grove, Illinois

Insightful!.......2002-04-16
Douglas Lamont, a member of IBM's Mobile Computing Marketing Advisory Board, argues that wireless will completely supplant the fixed-wired Internet and will be the dominant way to surf, purchase and talk to your friends. Lamont even goes so far as to suggest investments: Nokia, Japan's DoCoMo-AOL alliance and wireless infrastructure firms. He even explains why Europe and Japan lead the United States in wireless "m" (for mobile) commerce - because the U.S. has been slow to adopt a national wireless standard. We from getAbstract recommend this tech-literate book to anyone at all curious about the future of wireless technology and its implications.
Very repetitive and not very comprehensive.......2002-01-08
I looked forward to reading this book, but at the end was disappointed. There was not one single illustration / photograph / diagram / piechart / graph etc, so every application, trend or statistic had to be visualised purely from the text.
I know what a 'manga' cartoon is, having worked in Japan, but if you didn't know, you'd still end up mystified - even one illustration would have helped.
The book was very repetitive - why would the author tell us at least 18 times that the Japanese love to download 'manga' - and so often - eg its mentioned on pages 140, 145, 148, 155, 157, 160, 162, 164 - each time as if its new information?
The role of Smart Cards gets a mention in less than 2 pages, and only appears in the last 10 pages of the book. There's no adequate explanation of Electronic Wallets or Internet Banking, like what do they do or how do they work?
In the final chapter, Conclusion, this isn't actually a 'round up' - totally new things suddenly appear, such as 802.11b. Yet there's absolutely no mention anywhere of Bluetooth, e-books, Blackberry devices etc.
There is continual mention of DoCoMo and I-mode, but no mention at all of the other Japanese offerings such as KDDI & J-Phone.
The Index is very poorly compiled - several references are made in the text to Manchester United, but it never appears in the Index. The Index has an entry for 'mobile phone' but only once (on page 52). Did the compiler of the index actually 'read' the book?
The remark on page 48 as to how m-commerce 'permits mothers to breast-feed their babies on time and at work' still mystifies me - wouldn't an alarm on a wrist watch or PDA do the same?
There is a 7-line mention (page 67) of the potential health issues associated with cellphone radiation, but the descriptions are very poor, for example 'damage to genes in blood cells', 'weaken the blood-brain barrier' and 'cause unknown genetic changes'...
Good info but hard to read.......2001-08-19
I run a wireless service for Italophiles called Mobìlito and was hoping to garner some insight from what has worked overseas where the wireless content and commerce marketplace is more developed. After reading the reviews I decided to purchase the book used...a wise move in retrospect. The good news is that there is useful and interesting info. The bad news is that Prof. Lamont's writing style comes off as stream-of-conscious lecture-discussions. The book lacks an editor and it shows coming off as unfocused. The organization is choppy and sometimes redundant making it difficult to read. Also, there is a measure of hypeful/name-dropping which reflects the time this book was written: pre-tech crash. As such the book quickly shows it's age. The book makes the cut as a keeper but I wouldn't recommend buying it new.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2001-06-01
Reading this book was a painful waste of time! As a graduate student taking an Internet marketing course, this text was required reading. I found it to be extremely arrogant and repetitive. Lamont states that all data shows that Americans are losing their reluctance towards m-commerce, but never sites any data. This is just one example of Lamonts self-proclamation of being an expert. He never examines the issues of why Americans are reluctant to use wireless technology (i.e. decreased functionality vs. the computer Internet and a reliable wired telephone infrastructure). He makes broad statements and tries to compare the mobile markets in Europe, Japan and the United States, when they have very little in common.
Like M-Commerce, a Lot of Hype.......2001-05-26
When I looked at this book in the bookstore, it seemed like a promising tome on a rather up and coming area. How wrong I was. There are many 'flaws' in this book (and the fact that the back cover listed a whole bunch of unknown name who praised the book probably should have alerted me). Here are some of the problems with the book:
- Doug Lamont seems to be a rather self-proclaimed expert who offers rather unsubstantiated advice on m-commerce which seems entirely based on his perception that iMODE is doing well and buying stakes in several European carriers and Nokia phones are cool. - the book is littered with examples of the success of iMode and the Japanese market plus repetitive mentions of how Japanese teenagers like manga cartoons and AOL hooking up with iMode to deliver content was the greatest thing since the mobile phone - he doesn't seem to have any ideas beyond that. - its an excessively American outlook on m-commerce despite the fact that it has been acknowledge by IDC and even Gartner that wireless is going to be big in Asia and not the US - so why even talk about American standards dominating outside the US? - the worst thing of all, it doesn't really offer any real insight. Some 300 pages of repetitive ideas that hype the same things and basically, tell most telcos what they already know. - Finally, his 'Invest, Option and Terminate' analysis of what areas to get into are so general, they're no brainers.
Its a hugely general book that claims to offer analysis based on articles from the Economist, the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times if the bibliography list is anything go to by.
My biggest regret is that I actually bought it after reading a few pages and thinking it might have some promise.
