Customer Reviews:
Should health care be a right?.......2007-08-22
Beware: This is an highly ideological text that starts with the assumption that health care is a right! It than goes on to say that in order to fulfill that right it is necessary to control the costs of health care. Obviously, cost control is a very problematic economic proposition that calls for state intervention and that sometimes has consequences that are the opposite of what is desired.
In the UK, where health care is a right, cost control has led to shortages, waiting lists and an overall degradation of health care. The UK, currently, has the highest mortality rates for oncological problems of all the EU countries and British people got used to flying to France and India for medical care. Canadians also have shortages and Canadians resort to the US.
Sometimes a "right" can easily turn into a "wrong"!
Easy to read.......2007-07-15
I got this book for a graduate class that I am taking. This book uses clear language when presenting the material and has many mini "case studies" for examples, which makes it easy to read. Though I am required to read this book, it is not the standard, wall-of-text, that I am use to reading.
Outstanding overview of healthcare system in USA.......2007-07-05
This is probably the best single text I have read on healthcare policy issues in the USA. The books addresses every relevant aspect of our system. Unlike other excellent books, such as Dr. Arnold Relman's book, A Second Opinion, which analyzes the system, then makes recommendations on how to reform it, the authors here mainly explicate. The format of the book includes brief, usually fictitious, vignettes about physicians, patients or administrators that illustrate the points the authors present. That format - combined with the simply-presented, clear narrative and analysis - works very well. I also find the references to be excellent. Aside from Dr. Relman's book, I recommend any of the books by Prof. Victor Fuchs, in particular Who Shall Live?, books by Prof. Theodore Marmor and the classic by Prof. Paul Starr, The Social Transformation of American Medicine. There are many other excellent books and articles by a wide range of insightful analysts. These kinds of books are invaluable for understanding the issues in healthcare. So much of the information that filters through to the average person via news reports, propaganda issued by parties with vested interests to protect and superficial proposals from polticians is inaccurate and misleading, usually grossly so. Reading a book such as this goes a very long way towards cutting through that clutter regardless of one's personal experiences and prejudices.
Understanding Health Policy.......2007-01-09
This book is a great basic review of how health care is delivered. The format and information is most useful for people who are going into medicine. There isn't really anything about the politics behind health care policy; instead the book focuses on defining key terms and outlining the structure of relationships between payers, receivers, and providers. The book also covers the differences between different types of insurance policies, as well as different national health plans of countries with more socialized medicine.
This is a good book.......2006-11-10
We use this book in the Health Care Policy class for which I am a teaching assistant. It is a good, basic introduction to most of the important issues in health policy and the students give it high marks for clarity and comprehensiveness. It is easy to read and to understand.
Book Description
This new book outlines key subject matter for long term care activity professionals already working in the field. Thoroughly researched and referenced, this book will provide a comprehensive understanding of all relevent information needed by activity professionals in long term care situations. .
Customer Reviews:
i needed it for class.......2006-03-21
I bought this book because I had to have it for school,
it is full of infromation on activities from history to the
future. it is a must have for anyone in the health care profession
More than the essentials.......2001-07-17
Essentials for the Activity Professional in Long Term Care turned out to be much more than just the essentials. The book is well thought out, and goes into detail when it is needed. I believe that it would be valuable to both the seasoned long term care manager, as well as those new to the field. I particularly liked the "Key Terms" and "Objectives" at the beginning of each chapter, which was great for quickly seeing what REALLY is included in a chapter, which is often difficult to tell in textbooks just from the chapter title. The book also includes facsimiles of actual forms in the documentation section, and there is nothing quite like seeing the real thing. A very well rounded look at long term care. Lots of pictures and charts keep things moving along, and there are self-assessment exams. I would recommend this book to anyone in long term care, regardless of their position.

Best Book on Caring for your Elderly Parents that I've Read.......2007-03-28
In clear prose, Dan Taylor guides you through how to talk to your elderly parents and help plan for their future to maximize indpendent living. I took voluminous notes and rank it as the best book of its type and I have read at least 20 others.
Great tool for those who need to have conversations between generations.......2007-01-23
As a pastor, I am always searching for resources that will stimulate conversations between generations, particularly in dealing with end of life issues. Taylor's book is an excellent tool for adult children to begin needed talks with aging parents. Plus it works in the opposite direction--a tool for aging parents to express their own concerns as they face the many unknowns of their future.
Everyone should have one.......2007-01-18
With parents in nursing homes and problems that go with it, my husband and I bought this book, and plan to pass it around to all our children to read. The more we know at middle age, the better off we and our children will be later on.
Great Resource.......2007-01-09
This book gives you a tremendous amount of confidence to have the tough conversations with your family. A must buy!
How To Approach and Deal With Six Important Conversations With Aging Parents.......2006-11-24
We hear so much about caring for aging parents these days that at times it feels that children are in a no win situation. Care-giving involves making difficult decisions which should be handled with as much thought and discussion as possible.
Thanks to Daniel Taylor, a 20 year veteran of the financial services industry, an attorney, and president of his own North Carolina-based advisory firm, for showing us an intelligent way in dealing with the emotional, practical, and financial challenges of caring for aging parents.
Taylor has put together an excellent guide book, The Parent Care Conversation: Six Strategies for Transforming the Emotional and Financial Future of Your Aging Parents where he presents a system that he developed that grew out of his own experiences in dealing with his father's care.
It is a system he has structured around the acronym CARE which stands for the following: challenges, alternatives, resources, and experience.
This system will aid children in opening up the doors of communication with their parents on key issues relating to their future care-even those which they were reluctant to discuss. According to Taylor, the CARE "hear and now" listening system focuses on the knack of asking the right questions now in order to avoid confusion and conflict in the future from chaotic decision making.
Taylor applies his system to six conversations that children should have with their aging parents: the big picture conversation pertaining to your parent's vision of their future: the money conversation where you wish to obtain an overall grasp of your parents' current and future financial needs: the property conversation which focuses on your parents moveable possessions and how they would want them to be distributed: the house conversation dealing with your parents plans to either stay in their home or move somewhere else: the professional care conversation and the kind of care they would want: the legacy conversation that will get parents thinking about their lives, achievements and the legacy they wish to leave.
No doubt, all of these issues are at times somewhat daunting, and as Taylor states: "talking to the elderly about aging is a lot like talking to the poor about poverty; no matter how delicately we approach the subject, we run the risk of scaring, offending, or outright alienating them merely by bringing it up."
Consequently, initiating the parent care conversations is not a matter in deciding when these conversations should take place but how they should be held.
Throughout the book, Taylor emphasizes that you must avoid the pitfall of coming across as intrusive where you bulldoze your feelings and opinions onto your parents. This approach is guaranteed to turn them off and probably shut them down completely. Instead, Taylor presents the parent care conversations in a way that is designed to open up the doors of communication between parents and children in order to arrive at a clear, mutual understanding of each one's respective feelings about the issue of future care.
As we live longer, the chances grow that parents will some day be in need of care. It is very common today where daughters and sons find themselves called upon to help care for their aging parents. This commitment may be of short duration or it may last for years. Roles are now reversed and responsibilities as well as feelings within the family can be complicated and confusing unless there is adequate preparation.
Written in a clear, upbeat, conversational style, The Parent Care Conversation: Six Strategies for Transforming the Emotional and Financial Future of Your Aging Parents will certainly prove to be of immense help to those of us who have aging parents and who have never broached the six conversations with them.

Great book, but out-of-date.......2007-05-28
I actually worked with Alex Bove on updating a book on estate planning, when I practiced law in Boston many years ago. I purchased this book back in 1996 (the date of the current edition), but since then the laws have changed several times, most notably in February 2006, with the enactment of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. As a result of those changes, many of the examples and planning suggestions discussed in Bove's book no longer work. For example, all rules relating to gifting, penalty periods, look-back periods, "half-a-loaf" planning, and annuities, have been radically changed. Do not rely on the examples in the book!
That being said, his material on durable powers of attorney, trusts (other than the Convertible Trust, which no longer works), gift taxes, general eligibility requirements, and ethics of Medicaid planning, is still worth reading.
For an example of a book that incorporates all the latest changes in the law, together with case studies and numerous cutting edge planning ideas, take a look at How to Protect Your Family's Assets from Devastating Nursing Home Costs: Medicaid Secrets. It's pricey, but well worth it when you consider all the information and ideas packed into it!
Woefully out of date........2007-04-28
While I own this book (I bought it ten years ago) it is now very much out-of-date. The law of Medicaid is one that is constantly in flux, changing just about every year. Recent changes to Medicaid law have made every book on the subject of Medicaid published before January 2007 obsolete. While this book and its author, Mr. Bove provided a great overview of the Medicaid planning process and for many years was the go to book to learn about Medicaid and the nursing home, today it is woefully out-of-date. For an example of an up-to-date book with information for all 50 states see: The Medicaid Handbook 2007
Not Topical.......2006-11-11
The book fairly explains the complexities of Medicare. However, many changes have been made in Medicare since the date this publication was printed. The book should be updated to reflect the recent changes.
Worthless after Feb 8, 2006.......2006-08-24
Dear Worried Reader,
On February 8, 2006, President Bush signed a law called the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. This law makes sweeping changes to the ability of seniors to transfer (gift) any assets to their children and grandchildren. Following the advice of any book written before that date can cause a catastrophic loss of Medicaid privileges when a senior citizen is most vulnerable..when they actually enter a nursing home. Do not use this book as a reliable guide to current law. elder law attorney Chicago, IL
Thanks to Mr. Bove.......2005-09-21
The information in this book is easy to understand and extremely valuable. It saved my family thousands of dollars by helping me get Medicaid for my father.

Customer Reviews:
Mosby's Textbook for Long-term care Nursing Assistants.......2003-04-27
I bought this book along with other recommended reference books for CNAs, and in my opinion this one is the best. It is absolutely a pleasure to read, easy to follow procedures, great color pictures and illustrations. Very user-friendly format. I was actually looking forward to study time using this book.
I would also recommend the Workbook that supplements this textbook.
Out of date in body mechanics/transfers/safety.......2002-11-30
As a nursing instructor working closely with rehab we found this book out of date, with no changes in transfers, body mechanics that have been updated for safety throughout the years. The demos show transfers with staff using poor body mechanics, leaning over residents, not using lower legs using lower back muscles. Moving a person to the side of the bed technique demonstratess segmental movement taking the resident out of body alignment. There are up to date techniques for this. Mercury thermometers are no longer used. A two person transfer to the wheelchair in this book involves picking up the resident from the back and lifting with someone in the front with the legs. if a resident needs this then a hoyer a must. For back safety! The Essentials of Nursing Assistants by Mosby Second Edition, includes the same outdated pictures and demonstrations.
Mosby's Textbook for Long-term Care Assistants.......2000-04-18
As a teacher of nursing assistants, I find the book to be the most helpful. Easy reading, descriptive drawings for the procedures they must learn and practice. I am looking forward to an addition of a "student Workbook". Although this textbook does has excellent chapter reviews with practice questions and answers. The State exam is 100 questions long and this helps them with not fearing answering multiple choice questions.

This comprehensive, user-friendly book provides the theoretical knowledge and skills content you need to successfully complete a nursing assistant certification exam. The book meets OBRA guidelines and prepares you to work in a variety of long-term care settings or sub-acute units in the hospital. A major goal of this resource is to help you develop an understanding of the principles of safe and effective care of residents in long-term care. From Doody's Book Review "This book, written to meet the needs of persons who wish to become CNAs and work in long term care (LTC), provides core concepts and clearly explains the basic principles of nursing care of the elderly. Weighted Numerical Score: 100 - 5 Stars!"

Assisting in Long-Term Care third edition.......2002-02-02
The authors seem to out do themselves with each new edition that comes to press. Most text books are out of date before they go to press and certainly before the instructors can make their lesson plans for the students. By the instructor using the work book and the guide with this text you will have an unbeatable combination. Simple language and the technical blend and the student is able to comprehend with minimum difficulty. The previous editions have retired to become reference texts and so will the Third Edition when the Fourth Edition becomes available for this Instructor of a Certified Nursing Assistant Class at our local Technical College.
ASSISTING IN LONG-TERM CARE.......2000-04-06
I am using this textbook for a CNA course. I looked it over before registering for the class and the textbook attracted me to the course. It is colorful, well-organized, and thorough. I was impressed with the range of topics covered and variety of ways material is presented and re-enforced. The study aides and headings are easy to use and it is easy to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who will be working with the elderly in a long-term care setting.

Customer Reviews:
Lasser covers the issues of buying LTC.......2007-04-10
This is a very thorough review of the details of understanding and buying Long Term Care insurance. You will understand what you are buying.
But this book does not make any case for not buying LTC and how to analyze that situation. It is strictly why to buy it and what to buy and how to understand what you may be buying. But SHOULD YOU. That is not covered, they just assume you are a buyer and help you in that mode. And for that mode it is one of the best. Take a look at the Idiot's Guide to LTC, some additional angles worth understandig if you like to read two books on every subject.
A Book for all health care Professionals.......2002-06-04
I found the book to be very readable and informative. It took the mystery out of long term care insurance, by explaining in detail who would benefit from it and process of applying for the insurance. I also liked the book because it was written from the conumer's perspective. It can serve as an invaluable resource for all health care workers.
There has to be a better reference.......2002-05-22
While Lipson's book identifies many important factors in idntifying the benefit options of long term care insurance policies, he does little to compare companies. He brings up key questions like comparison of claim rates, lapse ratios, and loss ratios, but does not provide the answers or identify where to get this information. He talks about misleading risk statistics but does not identify the actual statistics. While I have a better understanding of benefit options, I would be unable to "Choose the Right Long Term Care Insurance" without researching this subject further.
J. K. Lasser's Choosing the Right Long-Term Care Insurance.......2002-03-26
People over 50 and their adult children should read this book. It answers the important questions about long-term care insurance and it helps people plan for their future. Among the many surprises: 40 percent of people don't need long-term car insurance. Using the back of the book as a key, you can pretty well determine if you or your parents will or won't need it.
The book is easy to understand, many of the brief examples are sad but true, and there's also some humor.
I think this book can help many people stay independent, remaining at home rather than going into nursing homes.
A must have........2002-03-25
My parents are getting to the age where long term care is an issue. I bought this book to help break the ice on our conversations and I am so glad I did. I now know about the different options available to us, but perhaps more importantly, what to expect from the insurance companies during the application process. That is invaluable. My parents loved the overriding goal of the book which is how to keep your dignity and independence. If you're considering long term care insurance, get this book first.
