      Book Description

The vision of the MIT Process Handbook Project is the creation of a systematic and powerful method of organizing and sharing business knowledge. Organizing Business Knowledge: The MIT Process Handbook presents the key findings of a multidisciplinary research group at MIT’s Sloan School of Management that has worked for over a decade to lay the foundation for just such a comprehensive system. It does so by focusing on the process itself. The book proposes a set of fundamental concepts to guide analysis and a classification framework for organizing knowledge, and describes the publicly available online knowledge base developed by the project, which includes a set of representative templates and specific case examples as well as a set of software tools for organizing and sharing knowledge.

Organizing Business Knowledge: The MIT Process Handbook includes twenty-one papers, some previously published and some appearing for the first time, that have come out of this decade-long project. Together, they form a comprehensive and coherent vision of the future of knowledge organization. The Handbook is organized into five parts: an introduction and overview; the presentation of a theory of process representation; "Contents of the Process Repository"; "Process Repository Uses," which gives examples from both research and practice; and a conclusion, which maps the progress so far and the challenges ahead.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Explains novelty in organizations.......2007-01-09

First, this is the second book in a series edited by edited by Stacey, Griffin, and Patricia Shaw from the Complexity and Management Centre, University of Hertfordshire
      * Complexity and Management - Fad or Radical Challenge to Systems Thinking (2000) - Stacey, Griffin, Shaw
      * Complex Responsive Processes in Organizations - Learning and Knowledge Creation (2001) - Stacey
      * Changing Conversations in Organizations: A Complexity Approach to Change (2002) - Shaw
      * The Emergence of Leadership (2002) - Griffin
      * Complexity and Innovation in Organizations (2002) - Fonseca
      * The Paradox of Control in Organizations (2001) -- Streatfield
The series intention is to develop thinking about organizations as Complex Processes of relating vs. as systems. In doing this, the authors clearly expose the failure of mainstream management thinking to explain strategic and organizational phenomena. In place of systemic (mainstream) thinking, are insights gained from complexity science that have been developed into the complex responsive process perspective. This perspective does descriptively address strategic and organizational phenomena and serves as a basis for prescriptive actions. See my review of Complexity and Management.

Second, as with the first book in the series, this is not a book to be "read", it is a book to be "studied." It delves deeply into learning and knowledge creation, the creation of knowledge being the creation of novelty. The radically different views of knowledge between cognitive and behavioral psychology is illuminating.

Stacey offers philosophical, neuroscience, and social science support for the legitimacy of the complex responsive process perspective over the mainstream management thinking. The book is, for the most part, descriptive. There is a comprehensive comparison of the systems thinking and complex responsive process perspectives in the ninth chapter based on what's in the first two books in the series. The tenth and last chapter outlines what the prescriptions might look like. These prescriptions are in the next four books in the series.

The core of this book hones in on learning and knowledge creation, knowledge creation being essential to organization innovation and evolution. The first section deals with the systems thinking perspective. There is a strong case made for the inability of that perspective to explain knowledge creation as well as some insidious aspects of management based on this perspective. The next section provides a comprehensive and robust explanation of the emergence of knowledge from the complex responsive processes of relating.

As in the first book, the content, issues addressed, the perspectives developed are worthy of more than a five star rating. And again, given the newness and challenging nature of the content, the repetition, or repetitive summaries, throughout the book were welcome. The reason for rating it four stars is due to the need to study it so intently in order to gain the understanding of what the author has to tell us. As in the first book in the series, more and better frameworks could have been provided for the information delivered. Given my intense interest in the subject, I developed several of my own frameworks to organize the content in order to gain greater benefit from the information provided.

Excellence in Practice Volume III, Innovation and Excellence in Workflow/Process Management and Document/Knowledge Management, by Layna Fischer, Chair of the Workflow And Reengineering International Association (WARIA), features the winners and finalists of the 1998 Giga Excellence Awards.

Guest Chapters - To add depth and meaning to the case studies, leading industry analysts and experts were invited to contribute chapters from their respective perspectives.

Streamline Your Business Processes With Workflow and Extranet Solutions
The introduction is by Connie Moore, leading industry analyst and Vice President with Giga Information Group, and Excellence Awards judge, jointly with Gig Graham, Chief Research Officer, Giga Information Group. Here, they watch a new trend in the way an enterprise delegates and manages business processes in its extranet, and a new role for workflow technology within organizations.

          Technologies for the Virtual Enterprise
Martin Ader, Principal of Workflow & Groupware Strategies, France, and author of the highly acclaimed Comparative Analysis of Workflow Products, looks at how the development of the Internet, coupled with the development of technologies for Knowledge Management and Work Management, will have deep influence on the way economic actors play their role in the worldwide market place.

          Process Support
Derek Miers, Principal, Enix Consulting Ltd., England, offers excellent advice to business leaders who must make critical decisions regarding the development of the next generation of Web-based enterprise application systems, e-commerce products and Web-based services targeted at the business sector.

The Workflow Market in 1999 and Beyond
Priscilla Emery, Senior Vice President, Association for Information and Image Management International (AIIM), presents some of the results of AIIMs annual worldwide study and provides a status of the document technologies marketplace, from both a user and a supplier perspective. In 1999, AIIM requested that GartnerGroup conduct this study.

          The Case Studies:

We, at Giga Information Group and WARIA, are most fortunate to have read all the submissions for the Excellence Awards--not just the Gold and Silver winners. Having combed through hundreds of submissions over the years across many countries and continents, we can clearly discern patterns in how companies achieve excellence. While not all companies share each and every characteristic, there is enough commonality to detect distinct paths for achieving excellence. When several of these characteristics are combined in a single installation, they often result in visionary companies moving the competitive goalposts for their industries, as you will read in the following case studies:

As a professional services corporation with 1998 revenues about $6 billion and over 60,000 employees in 363 locations in 78 countries, for Arthur Andersen LLP (Amsterdam, Netherlands) knowledge represents 99.95 percent of what AA sells to its clients and is the core process of their value chain.
Autogere Seguros e Pensoes (Lisbon, Portugal) integrated imaging, telephony, fax, and transaction processing using workflow across the supply chain. Their call management system included computer integrated simultaneous voice/data, and inbound/outbound call scripting.
Bank of America Capital Markets Operations (San Francisco, CA) This application describes the reengineering and workflow automation of the process used to acquire, setup and maintain new brokerage accounts within the Capital Markets Operations division of Bank of America.
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of South Carolina (Columbia, SC) high claims volumes of over 500,000 claims in process with more than 100,000 new claims added daily impacted their ability to meet service level and cycle time minimums for processing claims according to government contract requirements.
CFI Mail Order Pharmaceuticals (Harrisburg, PA) CFI tied together imaging, OCR/ICR, bar code, document management, core line-of-business applications, on-line databases and other technology components into a total enterprise solution.
Detroit Edison (Detroit, MI) implemented the Corporate Real Estate Services (CRES) Database/Imaging System to automate the process of file retrieval and to protect these easement agreements (some of these fragile documents were acquired before the year 1900) from catastrophic loss.
ForeningsSparbanken (Stockholm, Sweden) was first European bank to integrate web-based workflow, implementing an Intranet for electronic mail, discussion groups, workflow and DM, BPR for pilot systems, purchasing and customer feedback and Workflow integrated with EDI.
George Mason University (Fairfax, VA) saw Web-based work management solutions deployed on an Intranet as one of the best ways to regulate and reengineer its business processes because of the relative ease of deployment and training.
Government of New Brunswick (New Brunswick, Canada) transformed what was previously a slow, paper-based, resource-intensive process into a streamlined, automated flow that has dramatically reduced costs and processing time, and increased productivity and accuracy.
IBM Global Services (Sleepy Hollow, NY) created CM AssetWeb to provide the infrastructure for IBM's Knowledge Management Solutions. ICM AssetWeb is a strategic knowledge and asset management collaboration system used by IBM Global Services and Global Industries to team, execute and win customer engagements by creating, sharing and reusing intellectual capital.
IBM ICMS New Zealand Ltd. (Hutt City, New Zealand) Their customer care and billing system was an online repository of intellectual capital enabling information capture, re-use, design, update and distribution. They transformed the internal culture from one that saw information only as "documentation" to one that recognized the asset value of knowledge.
Immigration & Naturalization Services (Washington D.C.) The ultimate mission of the INS' FOIA/PA unit is to respond to a constituent's "right to know" by providing timely information to the public and other Government agencies when they request it, within the provisions of pertinent laws and regulations.
Kaiser Permanente (Oakland, CA) By combining data mining techniques with the document technologies, Kaiser Permanente generates personalized communications from doctors to patients who may be at risk, requesting an appointment.
Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Taejon, South Korea) Their business problem was that inaccurate forms created re-work in their bureaucratic, paper-driven environment. Their solution was to initiate an ambitious project called Intelligent Campus to build a virtual university.
Kraft Foods (Northfield, IL), put in place a Shared Services Center (SSC) which operates as one of the most efficient Accounts Payable Service Providers. The system connects three different systems through a common interface.
Lewisham Borough Council (London, England) Through the deployment of workflow technology, efficiencies in this area will allow for collections to reach a 95 percent success rate in financial year 98/99.
Office of the Secretary of Defense (Washington D.C.) The OSD Legislative Affairs is the primary liaison between Secretary of Defense and Congress. Using procedural and ad hoc process management, which provides the necessary flexibility the OSD Legislative Affairs requires, they are now responding to inquiries 15 times faster and processing more responses with 10 percent fewer personnel.
Phillips Fox (Sydney, NSW, Australia) They were the first law firm to implement knowledge management, and the first with a high volume claims litigation product. This implementation, which changed the way lawyers share and access information, redesigned existing Intranet processes, aligned IT and knowledge management, integrated document management, databases, workflow, documents, email, with the result that one query searches all repositories.
Screen Actors Guild Producer's Pension and Health Plans (Burbank, CA) is a trust that was established to provide a portable set of health and pension benefits to its 37,000 health and 5,500 pension members.
Texas Women's University, (Denton, TX) Resources to track all the information that is required to approve a loan, grant or scholarship have been shifted from personnel to the workflow system.
University of South Florida, (Tampa, FL) Integrating the legacy and manual processes with new and innovative technologies via the intranet system provided a set of flexible processes that use a single source of information in a meaningful and useful way.
The Workers' Compensation Board of British Columbia (Richmond, BC, Canada) implemented an Electronic Claims File system (or E-File), the technology backbone of its organizational change efforts.
Zurcher Kantonalbank, (Zurich, Switzerland) The ZKB initiated a FIT policy for industrializing business management and production, and automating banking processes.

Readers of these detailed case studies can find out more about:

Their system application, what the system is used for, who are the users and what the job entails
          What were their key motivations
Their system configuration (number, and type of software, servers, scanners, printers, storage devices, etc., including the identities of the vendors and integrators involved)
The number of users currently on the system and number of users planned.
How the company has been impacted by their new system; cost savings, ROI and increased productivity improvements, competitive advantage gained, and how they managed to move the goal posts for their industry.
Their implementation process and methodology, the project team, and the change management and business process reengineering issues they addressed.
How these companies managed both their overall technological and business innovations.

          Product Description

Business Process Improvement Through E-Collaboration: Knowledge Sharing Through the Use of Virtual Groups is written around two main theses. The first is that business process improvement, a key element of the most influential management movements since the 1980s, can itself be considerably improved by the use of information technology. The second is that process improvement affects organizational knowledge sharing in a non-linear way, and that the use of e-collaboration technologies can boost this influence by increasing the breadth and speed of knowledge dissemination in organizations. Business Process Improvement Through E-Collaboration: Knowledge Sharing Through the Use of Virtual Groups discusses key findings in connection with effects of e-collaboration technologies on business process improvement groups, making this book an important tool for academia and businesses everywhere.

            Book Description

For project managers in charge of complicated, 10-person-plus projects, one of the best ways to take control and produce predictable, repeatable results is to focus on both complex theory and practical techniques.

Modern Project Management helps them do that, filling in the knowledge gaps and answering the questions of this often misunderstood process. By going through project management step-by-step, the book presents an integrated approach that balances theory, methods, psychology, and practice, and helps even novice project managers achieve superior results. Readers will learn how to:

            * Plan the project to maximize productivity
            * Motivate others to execute the plan
            * Analyze the actual results
            * Rework and tune the plan as the project is executed.

Also included with this book is a project management toolset called Modern Manager. Easily installed on a personal computer, this software is far more than just a scheduler. It features tools designed to help project managers plan, estimate, monitor, and control projects.

            3 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!.......2003-03-13

Author Norman R. Howes tackles project management in all its intricate bureaucratic glory, and brings the process up-to-date in what is essentially a book of instructions. Helpful in designing and tracking projects, this clear, crisp manual comes with Modern Project software, the program used to carry out the project management steps delineated in the book. The book, like any owner's manual, is very list-oriented. Howes does not teach you how to manage a project, either practically or theoretically, as much as he outlines the managerial process. His step-by-step guide focuses on detailed information telling readers how to take advantage of the software as they manage projects. While we from getAbstract recommend this guide specifically to project managers - who should keep it on hand, particularly if they use the related software package or want to learn more about it - the book is also designed to be used in corporate training programs and college classes.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Project Management.......2002-08-07

Great book. Clear, well thought-out, and useful. I am using the method and tools to manage a series special event projects with 19 staff and 6 other vendors. Everyone has read the book so we all have a common understanding, and everyone is using the tool to generate reports - very cool.

5 out of 5 stars Good practical stuff.......2002-01-22

Doesn't cover every aspect of PM but every aspect it covers is done very well. An easy read that can change how you do things. The enclosed software reinforces your knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Measuring Earned Value Correctly.......2002-01-09

I concur with other reviewers that this book is
extremely valuable, insightful, and comprehensive. It
provides clarification of several Project Management
concepts that are typically glossed over and sometimes
completely ignored in other texts. Perhaps the most
important contribution the author makes is in his
explanation of the subtleties of Earned Value - the
primary measurement for a project's performance. Many
Project Managers that I have worked with do not
understand how to measure Earned Value and end up with
incorrect measurements, or simply fail to use this
critical indicator altogether. I recommend this book to
all project managers who want clarification on this and
other topics that will help them improve their own
            performance as managers.

5 out of 5 stars A really modern treatment of project management.......2001-12-08

This book focuses on modern project management concepts and techniques, but covers the standard stuff like what you will find in the PMI PMBOK. The project management system that comes on the CD with the book contains tools you won't find even in expensive PM systems. There are at least a couple dozen tools on the CD and an example project you can use to try the tools out on.

            Book Description

Companies must confront an increasingly competitive environment with lean, flexible and market oriented structures. Therefore companies organize themselves according to their business processes. These processes are more and more often designed, implemented and managed based on standard software, mostly ERP or SCM packages. This is the first book delivering a complete description of a business driven implementation of standard software packages, accelerated by the use of reference models and other information models. The use of those models ensures best quality results and speeds up the software implementation. The book discusses how companies can optimize business processes and realize strategic goals with the implementation of software like SAP R/3, Oracle, Baan or Peoplesoft. It also includes the post implementation activities. The book cites numerous case studies and outlines each step of a process oriented implementation, including the goals, procedures and necessary methods and tools.

            1 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible.......2004-04-17

Without a doubt this is the worst concept I have come across. Very unrealistic.
Do not waste your money, or your time even if someone were to give you this for free.

            5 out of 5 stars Excelent Book....Excelent Concept.......2002-12-14

I just finished this book. This could not have come soon enough for the initiatives that we want to initiate. I highly recomment this to anyone in an organization where profits, efficiency, are at the top of their priority.
The writing is clear, articulate and presented very well.
            A great read

4 out of 5 stars This boook links organization and process model.......1999-01-12

THis book is interesting book. Because Organization theory and system process intergrated. I recommand this book to process modeller, organization desinger and business modeller.

1 out of 5 stars Written to appear to be a scholarly work........1998-11-25

The constant citing of references in text, instead of placing them in footnotes, makes the book very difficult to read. The author is also bent on being academic to the extreme. For example, he wastes considerable print (and the reader's time) on the definition of software and systems. Technically the book does have some merit in covering the principles and practice of installing Standard Software (ERP) but these points of illumination are far to hard find and nearly impossible to understand in this writing.

            4 out of 5 stars Must-read for SAP implementations.......1998-07-27

This book provides a detailed blueprint for the implementation of standard software. It is well-researched and highly structured. If you are embarking on a standard software project you should make sure that all your team members read chapter 3. It gives an excellent overview about the issues from strategy to implementation.

              Book Description

Get wise to the knowledge within your organization.... Within every company, a small group of people exist who know how to get things done: how to solve big problems that stump others, navigate obstacles, and anticipate emerging opportunities with amazing speed. But most companies don't make the best use of their wisest people...or even know who they are. The Wisdom Network introduces readers to an eight-step process for discovering and realizing the power of the untapped knowledge that exists within their organization. The book shows how to:

              * establish an environment that encourages wisdom sharing and expansion of roles * identify "magnet" topics vital to the company and support ad hoc teams of experts that form around them * create unconventional measures to track the progress of the wisdom network

Employees who continuously prove their worth can be found at all levels of the organization. Here's how to reap the true value of their wisdom.
