5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about the subject!.......2007-09-26

This one book has it all! The author hasn't left any segment of Six Sigma uncovered. The index is detailed, making it easy to find a particular thing in the book. The language is easy to follow.

4 out of 5 stars Wow Book.......2007-09-07

This book is worth the price. A good guide indeed, covering theoretical perspective and making practical sense as well. A must for those new and enthusiastic readers of Six-Sigma.

3 out of 5 stars My Six Sigma Handbook Review.......2007-09-01

The Six Sigma Handbook was a required reading as part of the Black Belt Certification I am taking. I have read the entire handbook. I found some chapters easier to read than others. There are other books, on Six Sigma, that may easier for the novice to read. This book is a great desk-top reference for anyone who is in the manufacturing line of business because most of the examples are focused in that direction. The book does contain some transactional examples from service companies that are helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-07-17

The book is very good on stats and very comprehensive. However for a book this size, would like to have seen a bit more on problem solving tools

4 out of 5 stars Book used as part of a Black Belt Program.......2007-05-14

I am reading the book as part of a SixSigma Black Belt program, currently at page 327. Reading as I am for comprehension, I find that there is a information in just about every line of the book. Pyzdek demonstrates his experience in the field of improvement, as all dimensions are thoroughly addressed. As an experienced engineering manager, I do not see too many stones unturned.

5 out of 5 stars This is a reference book, not an adventure novel.......2007-01-18

I purchased this to study for the CDT exam. It is very complete, but reads (as you'd expect) more like a specification than a textbook. Five stars for completeness, and five stars for cure for insomnia.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent counterpart to the AIA Handbook........2007-01-07

First off, I'm an architect, so my review is written from that perspective.

This is a great companion to the AIA Handbook. If the AIA Handbook is about running a firm, the CSI PRM is about running a project. An oversimplification, yes, but both books are so dense and full of critical information, no 100 word review could do either justice.

The CD includes many useful references including an overview of MasterFormat and a list of divisions / sections, but does not include the entire MasterFormat "product" (the full MF product includes 95-04 conversion tools and additional documentation).

My only complaint is that the text is so dense it takes a lot of time and energy to absorb all of the information within. :) It's as if they took a 1000 page tome and compressed it into 300 pages. (The product description says 1200 pages, but it's only an inch thick, so I'm guessing 300 pp.)

A must-have for architects who strive to deliver projects in a more expert and professional manner, and wish to more effectively interface with contractors during the construction phase. If you're a pure "designer" or only involved with the front end of projects this will probably stay on the shelf, but if you're responsible for the rest of the process (DD through construction and occupancy) this book is essential.

I can't believe I made it through 6 years of architectural education without being required to own this book.

Book Description

Creating the Project Office is written for managers who are searching for ways to transform their organizations into more effective and efficient project-based workplaces. As this important book reveals, there is no more effective way to make that change than to create a project office tailored to the needs of the organization. While a project office model leads to better products from projects, it is also a vehicle for generating overall organizational change— by transforming the organization from function-based to project-based. This model incorporates projects into the very fabric of the organizational strategy and revitalizes organizations, creates competitive advantage, and increases shareholder value.

5 out of 5 stars Common sense applied to change management, wrapped in a bow!.......2004-12-02

I purchased this book on recommendation from a previous reviewer and was amazed by the breadth, depth, and more importantly pace of the book. The book moves quickly and does not spend a lot of time on theory, more time on examples (drawn mainly from Englund's work at HP).

The high level process applies as a general change management agenda, but applied through the lense of a PMO or project office. The annecdotes and lessons learnt provide an excellent framework for either internal "change agents" or external consultants to structure a successful organizational change and increase in proejct delivery quality.

The examples and frameworks in the book are easily understood and presented in a way that they can be reused or applied to many different project management challenges. I highly recommend this book to program managers or IT consultants who are intereste in affecting change in any organization.

5 out of 5 stars Unusually rich.......2003-03-26

This book takes the leading thinking in implementing organizational change and applies it directly to the challenge of implementing project management. The authors then advance the art through the application of their extensive experience and original thought that leaves the reader-practitioner with a step-by-step guide to implementing a project management office.

The major strength of this manuscript is its revelation of the organizational challenges in creating a project office, their causes, and straightforward advice on navigating the pitfalls. The knowledge and experience of the authors comes through with `been there, done that' credibility. The reader leaves with a deeper understanding of their organization and the means for achieving their goal of implementing a project office.

I thought Part One was one of the best discussions I have seen of the organizational change factors involved in implementing a project office. It provided thorough overall coverage on the existing body of work in organizational change and provided an application to project management. The author's contribution of speaking truth to power is valuable.

I found the manuscript replete with illustrative material. I particularly liked the anecdotes from Greek mythology and literature. This book is unusually rich in supporting the principles advocated with clear `how-to' instructions. As a practitioner reading the book, I found myself saying: "Yes, that works," "I wish I had thought of that sooner," and "I am going to use that tomorrow." - a manuscript reviewer

Book Description

Today's project managers find themselves in the dual roles of technical expert and business leader. As project management has evolved, the need has emerged for an organizational entity to manage complexities and ensure alignment with business interests. A project management office (PMO) coordinates technical and business facets of project management and achieves the goals of oversight, control, and support within the project management environment. The Complete Project Management Office Handbook identifies the PMO as the essential business integrator of the people, processes, and tools that manage or influence project performance. This book details how the PMO applies professional project management practices and successfully integrates business interests with project goals, regardless of whether the scope of the PMO is limited to managing specific projects or expanded to the level of a full business unit. People at all levels of the project and business spectrum will benefit from this volume. The Handbook focuses on how to establish PMO functionality to meet the requirements of project stakeholders. It presents 20 pertinent PMO function models, providing guidance for developing PMO operating capability that is applicable to any organization. It also presents these functions relative to five stages of progressive PMO development along a competency continuum, demonstrating potential PMO growth from simple project control up through its alignment within a strategic business framework.

5 out of 5 stars PMO guide.......2007-09-11

excellent reference book and would recommend it for any one wants to know more about PMO

1 out of 5 stars Reads like a big dictionary..........2006-10-19

Personally, I don't like this book. It reads like a big dictionary... lots of words but nothing tying things together. I found it difficult to find and follow a set of concrete steps to help get a PMO up and running. I understand it is "complete" but it does it at the expense of the "shotgun effect"--throwing a lot of stuff out but not really zeroing in on anything.

I think this book would be great for someone who needed to pick and choose a few specific things and wanted a reference but as a day-to-day book to help with setting up a PMO and figuring out how to get a PMO effort off the ground in a way that ensures success, it misses the mark unfortunately.

5 out of 5 stars Keep this Handbook "Handy".......2006-05-11

Hill's book is an excellent overview of the Project Management Office(PMO) stages and functions. It is well-organized and well-written, with each chapter following a consistent format and including a related function model for the topic being discussed.

I particularly liked:

o The PMO Competency Continuum that depicts the five stages in the evolution of a full-blown PMO (i.e.,Center of Excellence), and the functions, advantages and disadvantages associated with each stage

o The table depicting the 20 PMO functions, grouped within his five function categories: Practice Management, Infrastructure Management, Resource Integration, Technical Support and Business Alignment

o Good use of charts, diagrams, bullets, examples, etc.

o Recognition of the PMO's business integration function

Suggestion for future editions: Correlate functions and processes to the Project Management Institute (PMI)'s terminology, phasing, etc.

A good desk reference!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-01-18

This is a very useful book for project managers and executives. A very complete book on the subject of project management offices.
It presents a complete view of the most important functions of a PMO.
One of the best books about PMO.

Classify this itsy-bitsy book as a project management guide that isn't a project to read but that distills all the basics for you into a quick thumbnail guide on everything from establishing objectives and keeping to schedules and budgets to providing effective leadership and tackling problems efficiently. Along the way, simple checklists enable you to be fully prepared at every stage, from starting up to closing down, and accessible diagrams and flow charts explore different options for action and provide useful examples. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

Book Description

The utility simply known as make is one of the most enduring features of both Unix and other operating systems. First invented in the 1970s, make still turns up to this day as the central engine in most programming projects; it even builds the Linux kernel. In the third edition of the classic Managing Projects with GNU make, readers will learn why this utility continues to hold its top position in project build software, despite many younger competitors. The premise behind make is simple: after you change source files and want to rebuild your program or other output files, make checks timestamps to see what has changed and rebuilds just what you need, without wasting time rebuilding other files. But on top of this simple principle, make layers a rich collection of options that lets you manipulate multiple directories, build different versions of programs for different platforms, and customize your builds in other ways. This edition focuses on the GNU version of make, which has deservedly become the industry standard. GNU make contains powerful extensions that are explored in this book. It is also popular because it is free software and provides a version for almost every platform, including a version for Microsoft Windows as part of the free Cygwin project. Managing Projects with GNU make, 3rd Edition provides guidelines on meeting the needs of large, modern projects. Also added are a number of interesting advanced topics such as portability, parallelism, and use with Java. Robert Mecklenburg, author of the third edition, has used make for decades with a variety of platforms and languages. In this book he zealously lays forth how to get your builds to be as efficient as possible, reduce maintenance, avoid errors, and thoroughly understand what make is doing. Chapters on C++ and Java provide makefile entries optimized for projects in those languages. The author even includes a discussion of the makefile used to build the book.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Does what it should do.......2007-07-02

I've used make and makefiles for many years. In my current product development there was suddenly a need for a little more than the standard make knowledge. For most Open Source tools there is a good O'reilly book, so I grabbed this one from the store.

This book exactly fitted to my need. It does what it should do, it explain make, and nothing more. Already after part 1 I got useful new bits of information. Nothing major, just small "ah-ha, that's how the do it"'s.

The book is structured ok (I felt it could be structured better, but have no suggestion how). It consists of basic and advanced parts. The basic part will cover rules, variables, functions and commands. The advanced will talk about large project, C++, Java, examples and some debugging.

All the basic concepts chapters were pretty good. Somehow I didn't enjoy the advanced chapters too much. I didn't feel I was learning much new things there. The Java chapter was a little odd. I've not met any Java developer who currently uses make, most have switched to ant quite some time ago (book was 2004, so might be changed in the fourth edition). The example makefile of the book was somehow not interesting. The second example makefile was the linux kernel. This was more interesting, but it didn't go into too much details.

All in all, I found it a good book. It gave me exactly what I needed. Somehow the writing style was a little dry. I couldn't really point my finger on what made it so.

I'll give it 3 stars. Not because it's not good, but exactly because it's a good book. However, it didn't give me something extra, which I always hope a book gives me.

Recommended when needing to know more about Make :)

3 out of 5 stars Well organized, competent but uninspired and biased.......2007-06-25

Mr. Mecklernburg is definitely an expert in GNU Make and the book shows it. The information it contains is well organized and the author doesn't spend precious time on non-essentials.

The downsize of the book consists in the total lack of fun it produces. The reader has no joy while learning about make and he may quickly find himself yawning at pages and pages of explanations with little or no examples that smooth out the learning curve.

The book seems as if the author tried to show off his knowledge with the best eficiency per page and in the smallest number of pages. He succeeded, at least with me: I am convinced that Mr. Mecklenburg is an excellent engineer but a terrible teacher.

Besides the content not being enjoyable, it is so much biased towards *nix that the Windows programmer righfully asks himself "what about me"? The solution offered by Mr. Mecklenburg for Windows consists in the... Cygwin environment. I'll abstain from commenting on this suggested choice.

Despite its drawbacks, the programmer may find enough material to learn from it and get the job done. But make no mistake: this is not a feat and you'll need quite some determination to finish this book and extract something useful out of it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for programmers.......2007-06-15

Make has been an icon in the GNU / Linux world for over thirty years now, and continues to be one of the most used utilities to ever be released on the platform. A good number of other projects have risen to take its place as an automated-build utility, but as of yet, none have been able to unseat Make. Some see Make as being too arcane and finicky to survive in the once it is confronted with an advanced, user-friendly, utility of the same purpose. However, as it stands now, Make is still the standard in the `industry', and Makefiles are distributed with almost every major software package on the GNU / Linux platforms (as well as some others!).

Any avid Linux or UNIX power user, as well as most system administrators, will need to have some knowledge of Make to do what they need. Programmers, on the other hand, need to have an intimate knowledge of Make, Makefiles, and what the abilities of Make are. This book is more for the latter group, and goes into detail that the former group probably doesn't need to know too much about. For the former group, I would suggest a more concise, simplified version of this book. For the programmers, this book is a must-have.

As I mentioned before, Make can be a little finicky at some points. This, some may say, is an understatement. There are a number of "gotcha's" in the language, as well as a lot of `hackish' features (when I say `hackish', think Perl `hackish'). Perhaps, more importantly, however, there are a lot of fairly advanced features that Make can handle, and few people seem to use these. This is where the book really shines - it goes over the rarely-seen, but perhaps some of the most advanced features, of the Make utility.

This might seem obvious to most, but the novel assumes that the reader has previous programming experience, and throws C++ code blocks at the reader on the third page of the first chapter. If you don't have any programming experience, you probably shouldn't be reading this book anyways - but I thought it worth mentioning.

The primary content of the book is split into two sections - basic topics, and then the more advanced topics. The author does an excellent job of starting out with the absolute basics, and slowly progressing into the more advanced topics at an easy-to-follow pace. I never felt like the pace was too fast, and the author does an excellent job of giving examples for each of the topics that require one. Each example is explained in detail, with an added bonus of a few "what-ifs" at some points.

In fact, this leads into one of my few complaints with the book. There is so much code, and so much text, and... well... nothing else. There are maybe a dozen and a half pages in the book that aren't just one big solid block of text. After a while, it becomes hard to take. It doesn't help that each page looks almost exactly the same, so after a while, things start to kind of bleed together. In the next edition, it would be nice to maybe see some page styling, new layouts, some more images / tables where possible, maybe some funny side anecdotes or something - *anything* to give the text some life.

Once you accept the pedantry of the text, you will find that it is extremely well written, and easy to understand. There were very few instances in which I had to re-read something multiple times to get an understanding of what was being communicated, and the author's ability to describe even complex topics in simple terms is really impressive at some points.

The advanced sections of the book delve into some topics that I didn't expect to see, and was honestly pleasantly surprised that they made their way into the text. Included in the list of `surprise topics' are alternatives to Make, benchmarking Make, parallel Make, distributed Make, third-party programs that work with Make to add new functionality, and even sections on Cygwin and Make.

Also in the advanced partition of the book were two other sections that I found to be extremely helpful, if not essential: Debugging Makefiles, and Example Makefiles. The Example Makefiles chapter includes both excellent Makefile examples as well as discussion of what is happening in them. The Debugging Makefiles chapter goes over a lot of the "gotcha's" in the language, how to find a problem, and then possible fixes for it. These were both nice touches to the book, and are examples of the dedication the author shows to covering the more difficult parts of the language.

For the purposes of an in-depth, complete tutorial in Make, this book succeeds wonderfully. The author, although a little pedantic in the design and layout, does an excellent job of communicating each lesson. I recommend this book to any professional or hobbies programmer looking to get a little extra control over the build process.

4 out of 5 stars Nice book; available on the net for free.......2007-06-03

I've just begun reading the book and it's a nice book on GNU's make. As already mentioned, it is not a handbook but rather more like a discussion of how to best use make in your builds. That said, I'd like to point out that the text is available on the net for free. If you look at the associated O'Reilly web-page for this book, you can find the link entitled "Online Book" - click on that to see the index of the free, online book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2007-03-15

This book is a good place to start for learning how to manage large projects with GNU Make. It covers the basics and then moves on to specialized topics including writing portable makefiles, increasing makefile performance, and debugging makefiles. I've been using GNU Make for years and still found the book worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Decent reference.......2007-05-07

Has anyone actually sent in the 2 dozen or so corrections to the publisher? The text is weak on analytics and not a 'stand alone' reference for the tougher certification exams (ASQ, Moresteam, etc).

Even so, it is one of the best commercial volumes out there - in terms of organization and potential benefit to the practitioner.

They should take a page off Juran's Quality Handbook, or other Engineering Handbooks (Perry's), on formatting and content development.

2 out of 5 stars Disapointing.......2003-12-14

In a word disappointing. Microsoft Project can seem like a bewildering collection of data, options, and interrelationships to the new student. Step-by-step provides some context by going through many of the tasks that you would actually execute if you were using the tool to produce and manage a project schedule. However, it does not leave reader prepared to produce and manage a real schedule of his/her own.

There is no discussion of strategies for schedules e.g. should you consider effort-controlled tasks, if you don't what's the best way to update your schedule, if you do what's the best way to update your schedule??? There is little discussion of "task types" and the pivotal role they play, how those choices impact updating the schedule, resource leveling, and incongruous operations that the tool will allow you to perform without protest. Perhaps because the producer of the software wrote the book there is absolutely no mention of the tool's shortcomings and how they can be avoided.

After reading this book the reader will be able to create a schedule, but will probably become bogged down in difficulty if they try to manage a project by maintaining that schedule.

I used the book as part of my study for the Microsoft Office Specialist exam. I found that I needed to do a lot of supplemental study in order to pass the test.

5 out of 5 stars All you need for MOS certification for Project 2002.......2003-09-27

I spent 2 months on this book, and practised using the trial software that came with the book. Believe me - that was all I needed to get certified. I just needed one attempt! No retaking business at all. I am now Microsoft Office Specialist in Microsoft Project 2002! I did not spend on any other training or books. This book deserves 5 stars and nothing less. Thanks to the authors who did a splendid job.

5 out of 5 stars Very good tutorial text for first-time users.......2003-04-03

The Step-by-Step series on MS Project has been a staple for several years now. Don't expect a lot of advanced coverage, but the book is a solid starter book with clearly written instructions and a fairly engaging case-based set of exercises.

Work through the exercises, though. It's a "hands-on" kind of book!

5 out of 5 stars Covers the breadth of features well.......2003-03-12

This book is designed to bring you up to speed on how to use the various features of Microsoft Project 2002, and it achieves that goal well.

It contains a well written Appendix entitled "A Short Course in Project Management", and various "Project Management Focus" paragraphs throughout the book, but it is not really intended to teach you project management. For that, I suggest you read a project management text without a software focus, such as Project Management for Dummies by Stan Portny.

Just as you would not expect a book on Microsoft Word to teach you how to write using good grammar, you should not expect this book on Microsoft Project to also teach you all you need to know about project management.

I use this book to teach various Project 2002 courses, and I find it works well. However, a prerequiste for my classes is a project management theory class that uses only pen and paper. I have found this to be a powerful combination.

3 out of 5 stars A Simple Intro for Project 2002...but you need more..........2003-02-14

I went through the book, cover to cover, word for word...doing all the examples whose files came from the included CD-ROM...never ran into any problems. Everything worked fine.
I guess I felt like a soldier marching through all the features in a logical progression. The book tells you what to type in step by step...introduces you to all the features (there is a lot that you can do with project 2002 besides manage your own project...eg., you can consolidate projects so that you have a project plan that contains other project plans that you can view and edit...you can create a VBA (Visual Basic Appliation) macro to run and update your HTML project plan...you can learn about Earned Value Analysis, which gives you additional insight into how your project is progressing (maybe similar to the internal rate of return used in Financial analysis to give you a report card on how well your investment is doing)...
I found the chapters were simple to step through and complete. The authors have a somewhat cut and dried tone that actually seems to suit the purpose at hand well, which is to drag you through all the features and details of project 2002 in a limited amount of space and time....And they do this in 369 pages (the chapters only, not the appendices) instead of over a 1000 pages as some books. So the book is for the beginner in Project, If you already have knowledge of project or read any other books on it, you'll want to find something more intermediate or advanced and this won't do it for you. I liked the book for keeping an even keel and not going off on any tangents...they had a goal to show you all the features and seem to accomplish that...Their treatment of many of the subjects in the book are elementary and you'll need to find other books eg., on VBA, to pursue it further.
What it purports to do is give you a step by step introductory knowledge of project 2002 with real world examples. So what doesn't it do? What it doesn't do is commit to showing you how to apply project management which is really what you want to do....knowing all the features is nice but show me a coherent "way" to put it into action...I think I need to get another book to do that.

Book Description

Cohousing offers an end to the isolation of the single family suburban home. Balancing community and personal privacy, cohousing is a chance to create a modern village in an urban or rural setting. Residents own their own homes and can gather in common areas to share meals and socialize. An increasingly popular form of housing in both Europe and North America, cohousing addresses and alleviates many of the demands and pressures of modern life - everything from day care to aging at home is easier with the help of your neighbors.

As pioneers in the development of cohousing in North America, Chris and Kelly ScottHanson offer individuals and new groups a wealth of information and practical hints on how the process works. The Cohousing Handbook covers every element that goes into the creation of a cohousing project, including group processes, land acquisition, finance and budgets, construction, development professionals, design considerations, permits, approvals and membership. This revised and updated edition includes an expanded marketing chapter as well as a foreword by Gifford Pinchot.

A source of comfort and inspiration for those who want to create their ideal community, The Cohousing Handbook is a ground-breaking and practical guide to building a better society one neighborhood at a time - a must-have for the growing number of people who want to create a cohousing community.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Cohousing.......2005-04-13

If you're involved with cohousing, you need this book. It gives you all the knowledge and tools you need to be successful in building a cohousing community. The Cohousing Handbook provides guidance on everything from forming a group to land acquisition and construction to marketing and legal issues. It also provides clear steps to follow for each segment of the process along with forms, resources and sample documents. Why re-invent the wheel when it's all here for you to adapt for your own community?

The authors have been involved with dozens of cohousing communities across the country and have a deep understanding of what's involved at every step of the cohousing journey. Whether you currently live in or plan to live in cohousing, are an architect or developer or other professional working with a cohousing project, I wouldn't go to another cohousing meeting without The Cohousing Handbook in hand.

4 out of 5 stars Cohousing in a box!.......1999-01-05

Chris Hanson has laid out for the reader a step by step guide to starting your own cohousing community. A must have for any cohouser, but definately not the first book you want to read to learn about the cohousing way of life. Durant and McCammant's excellent book fills that roll, just as this book fills it's intended role. If you are contemplating starting or joining an existing group, buy this book. It will guide you through the process step by step. We're not trying to reinvent the wheel, so we may as well learn from those who have paved that road for us!
