Dr. Michael Roizen hopes to discover a cure for the common birthday. The author of the bestselling book RealAge and Oprah guru, Roizen translates groundbreaking medical research into a series of calculations and choices that promise to reduce age-linked symptoms and diseases. The RealAge Makeover begins with a self-test of 132 health factor questions that compare your calendar age with your "real age"--based on healthy habits plus heredity, he rounds up the usual suspects (sun exposure, sleep patterns, good fats) as well as the unusual (the kind of chocolate you eat, the number of nagging unfinished tasks, your catsup consumption). Although Roizen flags heredity, he focuses on the three key factors of aging: arteries (heart attack, stroke, memory loss), immune systems (prostate and breast cancer), and environmental stresses (lung cancer, STDs). He offers a sliding scale of difficulty in his "younger every day suggestions." Whether talking about stress, diet, or disease, Roizen offers case examples and subtle and engaging strategies such as describing the role of living beyond your means in aging or the difference between "four-legged" and "no-leg fats." Readers looking for a quick fix will benefit less than those who follow the recommendations that require focus and commitment. As Baby Boomers age and books about turning back time increase, Roizen's will remain a standout. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
The bestselling author of RealAge has more ways to turn back the clock and get a new lease on life.
Thousands of Americans are younger today than they were five years ago. How? By following the specific recommendations that reverse aging in the bestselling book RealAge: Are You as Young as You Can Be? People who were previously much 'older' than their chronological age have taken 10, 15, up to 24 years off of their biological age. It's been called The RealAge Makeover.
Almost daily, there are news items about ageing or age–related disease. One food is found to increase the risk of heart disease, while another has been found to decrease it. In The RealAge Makeover, Dr Roizen makes sense of recent critical medical findings. Plus he offers steps that will reduce or even prevent 80% of the diseases that make you feel or be older. Roizen believes that if you are well informed, you can control your genes to a very large degree. For example, just eating the right chocolate or drinking a little coffee can help you reduce inflammation dramatically and preserve your arteries, joints, and memory. But the wrong choice can lead to needless aging and loss of energy. The RealAge Makeover tells you how much (in years) each such choice is worth. Why not live at 60 feeling like you did at 35?
For that extra inspiration, readers' personal success stories are interwoven throughout the book. They followed the RealAge program and became younger biologically and are now living happier, healthier lives.
o Aimed at those getting older and those who want to preserve their youth.
o The RealAge Makeover unifies all aspects of ageing, explaining the relative impact of the behaviours that age us and providing a numerical guide for age reduction. The basis of the RealAge program is that certain foods and behaviours can make you older or younger, and it offers a range of age–busting strategies for a healthier, younger body.

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure.......2007-08-28
And "prevention" (of aging and disease) is the underlying message of this makeover program.
The Dr. Roizen (who partnered with Dr. Oz for the successful "You" series of books) provides easy to follow guidelines for doing the things you know you need to do for better health.
This isn't necessarily a book you'll sit down and read cover to cover. It may work better for you if you turn to the chapter that addresses your most pressing concern (weight, smoking, etc.), and start there.
Because the other underlying message is that you have to start SOMEWHERE to get your health under control.
With this book, the plan is laid out for you in easy to understand language. The implementing may not be quite as easy. That part takes determination.
So if you're determined to do something about your health, you'll find what you need here.
(So why 4 stars, not 5? Because, unlike the "You" books, this one has no "cute" illustrations, and it is dense with text. Something that may be off-putting for readers who like their medicine to go down smoothly, and with a touch of humor.)
The more you know...........2007-07-19
Roizen tells you easy ways to improve your health and well being.
His methods are straight forward and completely obtainable.
The hard part, incorporating these practical and easy steps into the formation of your new habits.
Before you buy this, you probably already know that you need to change your lifestyle and habits. If you have the will power to change, you will love this book. If you don't have the will power, you will need a very wobbly table to level before this book will be useful to you.
RealAge.......2007-05-12
It is OK. Uses the hype: Your younger than you think are, as long as you take care of yourself. Daaaa
More of the same..........2007-05-07
You can find this info on line so I wouldn't spend the money unless you're a real health nut and need to read everything and anything written on aging etc. It's OK but the internet would be faster and just as informative.
The RealAge Makeover.......2007-04-13
Great information. Now, I just need to actually apply this new found knowledge to my life.
Book Description
Using design details to improve today's health care-an inspiring, comprehensive guide
As Cynthia Leibrock writes in the Preface, "The power of a healing environment comes from the little things, the design details that empower patients to take responsibility for their own health." In Design Details for Health, she offers specific design details that can improve patient outcomes by returning authority to the patient, along with fascinating case studies and research demonstrating the positive role design details can play in reducing healthcare costs. Practical and inspiring, this innovative book is essential reading for architects, interior designers, facility managers, and healthcare professionals.
Attention to detail is the cornerstone of success in virtually every enterprise. This is especially true in the field of healthcare design, where design details can have a profound impact on the quality and efficacy of care.
In Design Details for Health, Cynthia Leibrock gives designers and other industry professionals specific examples showing how design details can offer patients greater comfort and independencewhile also giving healthcare facilities a competitive edge-saving staff time, cutting overhead costs, and reducing liability.
With the help of nearly 200 images, many in full color, she offers flexible, innovative design solutions in key areas such as lighting, acoustics, color, furnishings, and finishes. From acute carehospitals to specialized ambulatory care and home treatment settings, she addresses a variety of healthcare environments and includes inspiring case studies that reveal how effective design details work in the real world.
Throughout the book, Cynthia Leibrock presents findings from the cutting edge of design research-including results published here for the first time-reflecting the experience and expertise of hundreds of healthcare designers and architects in the United States and abroad. Covering topics ranging from acoustics to lighting, this valuable data includes citations for further reference.
When design empowers rather than disables, everybody wins. Sensitive to the needs of both patients and the providers that serve them, Design Details for Health is essential reading for today's architects, interior designers, facility managers, and healthcare professionals involved in commercial and residential healthcare facilities.
". . . this book is a reference standard with timeless value." -Wayne Ruga, Founder, The National Symposium on Healthcare Design
Customer Reviews:
Excellent hands-on resource for Interior Designers.......2000-08-14
I am a professional Health Care interior designer who is always looking for resources to enhance my knowledge base for creating healing enviornments in the health care market. A few years ago I attended, along with about 300 other designers, a presentation by a nationally known health care designer. At the end of the 1.5 hr. lecture, there were six of us left. The focus of the talk was entirely philosophical: there were no gems of knowledge or tools we could take back to our design practices to make our projects better. Ms. Leibrock certainly doesn't have to worry about anyone leaving her presentation. The book has been delegated to my reference shelf and I am sure will become dog-earred.
The specific types of healing environments included in the book range from birthing centers to long-term care facilities and all that is in-between. The philosophical issues are presented and then followed by research findings and case studies which support those concepts. Then the GEMS! Lists and lists and lists of hands-on guidelines which are distilled from the vast experience and research of the author.

Book Description
The American Association of Retired Persons estimates that the number of communities for seniors has doubled in the past ten years and will more than double again before the turn of the century. With estimated annual revenues of $14 billion, the industry is expected to grow dramatically -- to $30 billion by the year 2000. This explosive growth has meant that new administrators and staff often are learning by trial and error the complicated task of delivering high-quality and consistent services to elderly persons. While many new facilities have been successful, others have found themselves plagued by a variety administrative and financial difficulties. Operators, developers, lenders, and staff members are attending conferences in record numbers, eager for practical answers to management challenges.
In Senior Living Communities Benjamin Pearce offers the first comprehensive guide to managing these important facilities. Drawing on years of experience running successful retirement communities, Pearce offers a wealth of sound advice and practical solutions. He discusses operating methods, staffing ratios, department management, cost containment, sales and marketing strategies, techniques of financial analysis, budgeting, and human resources. He also offers specific details on resident relations, transportation, activities, food service, housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance. An extensive operations audit is included in an appendix.
As Americans of the baby boom generation approach their senior years, society must prepare a strategy for accommodating this burgeoning population. Senior Living Communities will prove an indispensable source of information and advice on various aspects of these rapidly growing facilities, including development, finance, investment, operations, improvement, and marketing.

Outdated Information.......2007-01-11
When I received a e-mail advertising this book, I thought it was new material. Out of the box, the browning faded paper told me that this was a very old publication, not worth looking at. The changes in the industry in the last few years have been such that current information is essential. I returned the book within 24 hours. It advertising material to potential readers, it should be made clear that this is very outdated material and not a new edition or remotely current information.
Really good for those interested in assisted living needs.......2003-02-11
I needed information on how to finance, build and market senior housing. The information in this book on elderly and handicapped housing needs is really helpful to me. This is well done, and those of us not part of the industry can understand it.
An essential part of your long-term care management library........2003-01-25
Pearce has done an excellent job of writing a sentinel primer for managing long-term care communities. The details are all there. Of even greater importance, the details are presented within the context of critical principles that distinguish the excellent community from the average or mediocre. As a faculty member responsible for a number of long-term care management courses at two schools of public health, this is one of a very limited number of texts that I assign as "must reads" for my students.
A Detailed and Complete Guide on Senior Living Communities.......2003-01-22
I truly enjoyed "Senior Living Communities: Operations Management and Marketing for Assisted Living, Congregate, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities". It answered most of the questions that I had on developing a community for senior living. I feel a social calling to provide for the housing and care needs of the elderly. The Senior Care track was adopted as a part of the Masters of Real Estate degree that I am enrolled in. This book was used in one of my classes. What a blessing! As I began to read this book, I realized that most of the "concise details" in developing a community are all in there. I am so amazed to see such valuable information each time I turn the page. The author has addressed the obvious and the important things that often are forgotten. This book is like the bible of developing successful senior living communities. The knowledge gained by reading this book will definitely create the foundation for the development of a successful project.
Senior Living Communities.......2002-01-22
Though this book may have been intended as a how-to for Benjamin Pearce's colleagues in the trade, it is thoroughly readable and complete. As someone who contemplates eventual entry into a Continuing Care Retirement Community, I found explanations for much that I have observed in the community where my own parents reside as well as what I have seen in the near dozen that I have toured. The intelligent consumer could not find a better way to be educated about the subject than to delve into the outline of management and practices that the author details. This will be a useful handbook for me for hopefully many years to come.

Customer Reviews:
Save you money!.......2001-09-05
If you consider taking OTCs pain relieviers and managing stress "home remedies," waste...er, spend your money on this overhyped collection of the same-old, same-old. If you want "real" home remedies, stick with the original books -- Home Remedies 1 and 2. This book is weak in its reporting and writing and fails to mention many of the current "in the news" health concerns (and promised solutions) for the elderly.
If you think Ibuprofen is a "Home Remedy" You'll Love This........2000-04-06
I found this book condescending and weak on useful health advice. Despite the "home remedies" title, the book's solution for just about anything that ails you is Ibuprofen. I expected far more emphasis on non-prescription health solutions from a book with the title "home remedies". The book's heavy emphasis on the side effects of prescription drugs made it clear that the authors assumed that the average senior is a prescription drug junkie and there is nothing in this book that will help such junkies kick their habits.
The medical advice in this book is very bland-- the same stuff you'll find in the magazines in your doctors' waiting rooms and in the mailings you get from your HMO. I did not find many home remedies listed here that my own doctor has recommended to me (for example, boric acid for recurrent yeast infections and tea tree oil.) There is no mention of low carbohydrate diets as an alternative to pancreas-destroying glyburide drugs for those in the early stages of Type II diabetes. There's nothing about Condoitin and Glucosamine Sulfate for arthritis. These are all "home remedies" that are gaining increased support from doctors because they work for many people and are far cheaper than expensive prescription drugs. Their complete omission from a book of this sort was a disappointment.
If you want to learn more about what you can do at home to help improve your health, save your money and use the rich health resources available on the Web!

A complete guide to giving healthy and productive lives to deserving horses.
Customer Reviews:
Glad I found this book.......2007-05-13
I learned of this book title and author mentioned on the ASAP horse rescue website, and I'm very glad I did. A lot of careful thought goes into the decision to take on the lifelong commitment of adopting a rescued horse. This book brought up many easy to understand details I may not have considered properly before making a decision. Nothing speaks more clearly than experience. With all of the helpful references, it's a very useful and enjoyable read.
Wow, what a great read!!!.......2007-03-04
I found this book extremely informative and an enjoyable read. The author obviously writes from experience and with a desire to encourage responsible horse ownership. She offers helpful advice for first horse owners and outlines the issues involved when taking on a horse in distress. For those of us with soft hearts and a lack of good sense, when it comes to an animal is trouble, this is a handy and humorous guide that will help us do the most good where it is desprately needed.
Nicely Layed Out .......2007-01-23
This book complies basic information and is layed out well and a good starter book.. One thing I was disappointed is that it didn't really outline how to start up a Horse rescue but then again it didn't state that it did- A overall nice book !

Book Description
A practical, thorough approach to the development of therapeutic special care settings
Research has shown that physical surroundings strongly influence the behavior and quality of life of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Designing for Alzheimer's Disease equips designers and care providers with the information they need to plan environments that can greatly enhance the lives of those with Alzheimer's. Explaining in concise, nontechnical terms how the disease affects cognitive and functional skills, the book offers detailed guidance on a broad range of design issues that are central to the creation of therapeutic care settings. The book features:
- Specific design suggestions that are linked to therapeutic goals, such as increasing mobility, reducing confusion, promoting safety, and maximizing functional abilities
- In-depth treatment of design criteria for lighting, color, pattern, texture, acoustics, and more
- Extensive information on furnishings, fabrics, floor coverings, wall and ceiling finishes, windows and window treatments, plus product information and specifications
- Flexible coverage of special care settings in nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, and residential environments — key information on room size, shape, and arrangement; outdoor space; wayfinding; safety; and security
- Over 100 photographs and line drawings that clearly illustrate the design principles — including a 16-page color insert
The nation's entire aged population is increasing rapidly, and the most dramatic rise is occurring in the over-85 age group. With the baby boom generation set to join the ranks of the elderly shortly after the turn of the century, clearly we will need more healthcare settings and other facilities for an older population with a growing demand for long-term care services.
In this context, it is vital for architects, interior designers, and those who deliver services to older people — whether designing senior housing or any healthcare setting for the elderly — to increase their knowledge of normal age-related changes, Alzheimer's disease, the physiological changes and special needs of residents with dementia, and the impact of the environment on elderly residents' ability to function.
Designing for Alzheimer's Disease provides a much needed understanding of this debilitating illness and the effect of design on residents' independence, mobility, and emotional well-being. Filled with detailed guidance on the creation of special care settings that address patient needs and support therapeutic goals, the book examines essential design criteria in such key areas as lighting, color, acoustics, safety, and wayfinding. Important considerations involving room size, shape, use, and arrangement are covered in depth, along with specific information on materials and furnishings selection — from floor coverings and window treatments to fabrics, patterns, and ceiling finishes. Over 100 photographs, including a 16-page color insert, give full expression to the design principles discussed in the text.
Designing for Alzheimer's Disease offers a complete blueprint for effective design development and implementation, with the full benefit of Elizabeth Brawley's extensive professional background in design for aging environments and her own family's experience with Alzheimer's disease. Easily adapted for use in home or healthcare settings, this book is a vital resource for architects, interior designers, nursing home administrators, and care providers — an invaluable aid in creating better care environments that allow individuals to function more independently, provide security and peace of mind, and improve quality of life.

Get another book too.......2004-08-27
I recommend "Retirement Nightmare" ISBN: 1573927961 . To avoid a guardianship in the State of Florida, and other states, should be of paramount importance. Find out how to protect yourself and your loved ones with alternatives: health care surrogate, durable power of attorney, mediation and more. Consider that if you leave your parents to fend for themselves, and ignore the deterioration associated with aging, a guardian can gain a guardianship over them and their assets, without informing you. That guardianship will nullify the most meticulous of plans. To really cover your aging parents, make sure they create a "Pre-need" guardianship and name someone they trust, this is the only way predators in the retirement homes will not be able to force guardianship on them. Also create an irrevocable trust.
some contact numbers wrong.......2004-05-28
Basically a great book. Unravels the confusion that you face when trying to plan care for your parents. But I found a few of the phone contact numbers to be wrong. For instance: on page 157: The Transit Hotline Number. This turns out NOT to be a number for consumers but for agencies.
Making your way through the social service maze is hard enough and unfortunately putting wrong numbers in the book doesn't help. Makes you wonder if they didn't check them before publishing.
Highly recommende!.......2003-10-30
Everything you will need to figure out how to take care of a senior is here. The many contact numbers are very useful.
Great Resource for those with aging parents.......2002-08-23
Very little on this subject is written in the daily press despite the growing numbers of seniors in US.
Just as important as understanding your taxes each year another topic we'd love to ignore, facts are provided with an understanding of the complexities of the subject matter.
The issues are addressed in a manner to provide the inside scoop on how to deal with the issues and provides resources. Provides a starting point for drafting your parental plan of action if one is not in place. Found this overall to be a great introduction to these issues.

Book Description
A comprehensive framework for capitalizing on the growing market for Continuing Care Retirement Communities.
Senior Residences equips architects and other industry professionals with a proven executive strategy for the design and development of successful Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) projects. Using two of America's foremost CCRCs as best practice case studies, it guides readers through every critical aspect of the process, from research and planning through construction, including:
* The enterprise concept
* Formation of an executive organization
* Financial and legal due diligence
* Marketing and sales preparation
* Residents' expectations and requirements
* Healthcare and residential services
* The design and build process
* Project monitoring and assessment.
The over-65 population is increasing rapidly and dramatically, raising crucial concerns about the housing and care of senior citizens in the years ahead. How can we provide the best possible quality of care to the elderly? How can architects, developers, and others capitalize on the growing senior housing industry and stay competitive in the future? How can the facilities they create deliver both good service and strong financial returns?
While there are no easy answers to these important questions, the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) model has emerged as a flexible and attractive option for providing combined housing, services, and nursing care to the elderly. Senior Residences equips architects and other industry professionals with a comprehensive, three-part strategic framework for designing and developing successful CCRC projects.
Part I identifies the eight critical success factors of a CCRC enterprise and illustrates them through an in-depth examination of two exemplary developments, The Cypress of South Carolina's Hilton Head Island and The Stratford in the San Francisco Peninsula. Part II details a computer-based "standard of performance" system to track progress and assess project performance. Finally, Part III examines how to use different types of research to stay on top of market trends and forecasts, legal and licensing requirements, and more.
Together, the three elements of this executive strategy cover every aspect of the development process, from the initial enterprise concept and executive organization building to financial and legal due diligence, marketing and sales, residents' services and healthcare, and design and build. Readers gain essential guidance in tackling key project management issues as well as in developing effective problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Written by an author team with extensive CCRC experience, Senior Residences helps encourage avenues of thought that will lead to more cohesive, responsive, and successful CCRC projects that benefit the professionals who build them and the residents who live in them.
Customer Reviews:
Technically Lacking.......2000-09-17
The book doesn't deliver on presenting a computer application system for evaluating performance. It takes the CCRC's accredition questions and just expands on them. From the information that was presented I not sure if the authors know what an application system is. In any event the book lacks any hard technical information, or performance standards, that can be used for evaluating and designing a project. It's presentation is more like a general business plan from a recent MBA graduate.
