Great book, but out-of-date.......2007-05-28
I actually worked with Alex Bove on updating a book on estate planning, when I practiced law in Boston many years ago. I purchased this book back in 1996 (the date of the current edition), but since then the laws have changed several times, most notably in February 2006, with the enactment of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. As a result of those changes, many of the examples and planning suggestions discussed in Bove's book no longer work. For example, all rules relating to gifting, penalty periods, look-back periods, "half-a-loaf" planning, and annuities, have been radically changed. Do not rely on the examples in the book!
That being said, his material on durable powers of attorney, trusts (other than the Convertible Trust, which no longer works), gift taxes, general eligibility requirements, and ethics of Medicaid planning, is still worth reading.
For an example of a book that incorporates all the latest changes in the law, together with case studies and numerous cutting edge planning ideas, take a look at How to Protect Your Family's Assets from Devastating Nursing Home Costs: Medicaid Secrets. It's pricey, but well worth it when you consider all the information and ideas packed into it!
Woefully out of date........2007-04-28
While I own this book (I bought it ten years ago) it is now very much out-of-date. The law of Medicaid is one that is constantly in flux, changing just about every year. Recent changes to Medicaid law have made every book on the subject of Medicaid published before January 2007 obsolete. While this book and its author, Mr. Bove provided a great overview of the Medicaid planning process and for many years was the go to book to learn about Medicaid and the nursing home, today it is woefully out-of-date. For an example of an up-to-date book with information for all 50 states see: The Medicaid Handbook 2007
Not Topical.......2006-11-11
The book fairly explains the complexities of Medicare. However, many changes have been made in Medicare since the date this publication was printed. The book should be updated to reflect the recent changes.
Worthless after Feb 8, 2006.......2006-08-24
Dear Worried Reader,
On February 8, 2006, President Bush signed a law called the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. This law makes sweeping changes to the ability of seniors to transfer (gift) any assets to their children and grandchildren. Following the advice of any book written before that date can cause a catastrophic loss of Medicaid privileges when a senior citizen is most vulnerable..when they actually enter a nursing home. Do not use this book as a reliable guide to current law. elder law attorney Chicago, IL
Thanks to Mr. Bove.......2005-09-21
The information in this book is easy to understand and extremely valuable. It saved my family thousands of dollars by helping me get Medicaid for my father.

A compassionate guide.......2007-05-10
We baby boomers may have thought we were the most informed generation of all time, but no one I know was prepared to deal with aging parents. Stella's book is a gentle study of the process physically, emotionally and spiritually, full of forgiveness and gratitude along with information you can use right now. It has been extremely helpful to me and my family, and I've given "Eldercare" to many friends who share my appreciation. Thank you, Stella.
The Eldercare Handbook.......2007-03-15
Stella Henry has answered so many important questions about how to deal with our aging parent's needs as well as our own. This is a MUST READ for every adult child with a parent that may need our help. She deals with the emotional and physical aspects for both the parent and adult child's needs. The insite into how and when to choose a care facilty is invaluable.
Must read for anyone with aging parents.......2007-01-04
Great resource. Read it before you NEED it. But let's say you're like me, you've waited too long and you're up against a wall, it's still helpful. Get tips on the fine legal issues, get support and guidelines for decision making.
A Straightforward, Understandable Handbook.......2006-11-11
I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone facing the challenge of managing the care of their elderly loved one! Ms. Henry speaks as a professional who has also experienced this from a personal level. It is a straightforward guide written so that the layperson can easily understand. I am purchasing this handbook for my sisters to have as a reference.
Eldercare from the Heart.......2006-07-20
What an eye opener! Through this book, Stella Henry holds the hand of the reader and says, "I've been there, what you feel is normal, you can do this, and here's how." Gently, she explains the joys, challenges and pitfalls of caring for the elderly. She unfolds the changing relationships between parent and child and illuminates shifting sibling roles. Perhaps most importantly, she tells the caregiver (usually a wife, daughter, or daughter-in-law) when it may no longer be safe to care for a loved one at home--when creating a hospital at home still cannot give a loved one the care he or she needs. At the same time, she warns that not all nursing homes and assisted living facilities are created equal and that we need to become sophisticated, knowledgeable consumers in order to choose an appropriate care center. The Eldercare Handbook answered questions before I even thought of them. I have already given this book to six friends.

Handbook for Directors of Nursing in Long-Term Care.......2003-02-16
My book arrived in a timely fashion and was in good condition. I have started to utilize some of the concepts in my Nursing Department.
A Bible for the new SNF DON........2001-05-07
I was introduced to long-term nursing rather abruptly and my predecessor had informed me, "Oh, there is nothing to the job. The place runs itself." As a new Director of Nursing, nothing could have been further from the truth. This very theory-oriented text has been my guide for the last year answering questions such as "If I am so busy what are the other department supervisors doing?" This book is well organized and easy to comprehend. It is concise yet thorough. I would recommend it to anyone who is about to venture into a Skilled Nursing Facililty career or contemplating such a move.

Excellent Needed Information.......2005-11-30
I have attended a seminar by Mr. Gordon. I purchased the book to do planning for my parents. The information has been invaluable! Everything of any importance is covered in the book, along with references to find out additional information, if necessary. I have recommended this book to several clients for review of their own personal situations.
This is one of the best books you could buy on this subject.

The Bible for understanding Long Term Care.......2005-07-21
Harley Gordon is the master at explaining the real story behind long care planning. If you want to know the facts about how to protect assets and still provide the best care for a loved one, this is the one book to read.
Indispensable Medicaid Primer.......2003-07-03
I have heard Harley Gordon speak on a number of occasions. He is forceful and to-the-point - and so is his book. Harley eschews legalese to deliver an easy-to-read discussion regarding Medicaid planning. This is source material for those in the insurance/financial planning arena and for those confronted with the prospect of spending down their assets prior to going on Medicaid, i.e. welfare. The material is presented in "Dick and Jane" fashion; it is an easy read. I recommend it to anyone who might be impacted in any way by Medicaid.

I f you wish to understand the subjects of Medicare and Medicaid as they relate to aging and long term care, this book is a must - and a "keeper". I am a 28-year insurance professional and have been involved in long term care insurance since 1988. I have heard Mr. Gordon speak on a number of occasions. He speaks as he writes - clearly and to the point. An attorney, he avoids "legalese". Our insurance agency trains other insurance agents in long term care. I always recommend that they purchase this book. It is imperative that our prospects and clients understand what (limited) benefits they might receive from either of these government programs. Mr. Gordon makes a complex subject understandable.

This is not quite what I expected.......2006-08-07
I can't say that, after having read the ANA statement with which she begins her book, that I was too enthusiastic about continuing. Basically, the statement says that LPN's should not have the position that I, an LPN, have, and that only RN's should. I found this offensive and, frankly, was put off immediately so I don't know if my review would be impartial.

Does not live up to the subtitle.......2007-07-07
A good overview of the law, but a lawyerly cop-out (everyone's circumstances differ - go see a lawyer) when it came to the 'protecting your assets' part. One piece of good advice (don't give your assets away - it won't help), but little concrete advice on how to protect them.
I would have liked to have seen if selling shares of a Family Limited Partnership would work to reduce assets. I would have liked to seen one concrete example, but the strategies boiled down to:
1) You need an income trust to get around the income caps (if your state is an income cap state)
2) Don't give your assets away to anyone
3) A revocable living trust MIGHT keep the state from taking your house when you die (go see a lawyer in your state)
Mr. Scott, don't worry; you're not taking bread out of the mouths of your colleagues' children by passing on secret information. We're going to hire a lawyer one way or another. I'd rather have some knowledge when I do and I'd have liked to have seen your content live up to the title.
Consumers, save your money and look elsewhere for information.
Great Read.......2007-01-23
Thanks Scott for disecting the code and giving the public a very easy to read book. Finally, someone broke down the legal jargon so us non - lawyers can understand the basics behind the DRA 2005. This gives us an idea on what the changes are and where we should go for additional information. I am recommending this to all of our reps to use as a introduction into the issues people face with Medicaid eligibility.
NO good info.......2007-01-12
This book does not provide any usefull info as to where and how to set up assets for protection. At the end it tells you to consult an elder atty. If you get the gov mediciad manuel 0 cost you know all that this book offers. If I could get I refund I would. Don't waste your time
HELPFUL, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE A FLORIDIAN.......2006-11-16
Well, the good news is that the book(let) is well-written, easily understandable and, at 36 pages, a really quick read. The bad news is that it may cause the reader to experience depression over, or anger about, the unfairness of our national health policies. More bad news: unless you live in Florida, where the author practices elder law (he even provides a map to his office on the back cover), much of the information is not pertinent. Mr. Scott does warn on page 16, however, about using his material if you live outside Florida. Too bad the Amazon Product Description didn't contain this caveat. The long and short of it is that the answer to your Medicaid/nursing home problems, as the author makes clear, can only be found with the help of an experienced elder law attorney.
Excellent Medicaid Guide.......2006-09-02
Someone has finally writen a clear, detailed procedure for meeting the state's medicaid rules, and for meeting the asset and income caps.

Sharon.......2001-08-26
I am somewhat disappointed in this book. I felt that many of the "hints" were written over and over. This book could have been written in half the pages and still have been somewhat valuable. I will use this as somewhat as a reference for a while, but will look forward to finding more books with more information. I just went through a volunteer session through hospice and this book left me feeling that there was alot missing.
Practical and Very Helpful.......2000-03-11
I was honored to speak with M. Catherine Ray before she died. She was very helpful to me in publishing my book WHAT THE DYING TEACH US: LESSONS ON LIVING. She has a servant's heart that shines through every word in her book. This book offers practical advice to anyone working with the dying. It is a classic. -- Samuel Oliver
