The book arrived in great condition and the information is useful towards my dissertation research.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent coaching tool Kudos to Kouzes!.......2006-03-26

I use this product one of the main tools for coaching. The LPI is a fantastic diagnositic tool. What is most important is that it describes the functional behaviors behind general leadership categories; such as Inspiring a Shared Vision and Modeling the Way. Some people have a difficult time getting a handle on what those general categories look like. The LPI helps them with specific behaviors from which they can build actionable steps to achieve their goals. Kudos to Kouzes!

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for evaluating yourself.......2005-09-01

My book only came with the self evaluation and was missing the peer evaluation so make sure your packet includes both. If you go through this and have a subjective way of having the people you manage turn them you can really learn allot about yourself and improve your leadership abilities.

2 out of 5 stars Undermines his own credibility.......2007-10-05

I purchased this book due to the overwhelmingly positive responses... While the actual concept and some of the underlying principles are pretty solid, there are a few things that detract from this book.

First of all, the font is about 14pt Times New Roman, which adds to the sense of this book being fluffed. Contributing to this feeling, is the fact that the author continually attempts to provide credibility to himself by mentioning O.C. Tanner, and the "various" projects he's worked on (for which he uses the same five examples ad nauseam). Essentially, he continues to justify why he's qualified to be telling you anything, while dropping the occasional "teaser" about the form you'll be using for the first FOUR CHAPTERS.

The absolutely most irritating aspect of this book, however, is that he's continually trying to sell it to you. In chapter one, he introduces an acronym for "The One Page Project Manager," viz. OPPM. He then proceeds to NEVER use it. Then, he mentions "The One Page Project Manager," so much that if I hear it again, I might end up incarcerated. On page 29, even with 14pt font, he manages to use "The One Page Project Manager" SEVEN times. I'm sure that my few mentions of that heinous term have already provoked certain ire. And by not using the acronym, he ensures that the term is too lengthy to conveniently skip while reading.

Chapter 5 comprises the bulk of the book (being some 100 pages in length - a shocking dichotomy from the previous 12-20 page chapters). Presumably where the "meat" is, it's filled with stuffing in the form of multiple OPPM's, with only the slightest difference between any of them.

To his credit, the concept is good, I think it will work (that's why I purchased the book). But Mr. Clark Campbell needs to realize that he doesn't have to sell his book during the first four chapters, as I already bought it.

2 stars for utility. -3 stars for absolute aggravation.

5 out of 5 stars Tool saved my now-complete project.......2007-09-25

I was tapped to manage a complex team consisting of writers and developers for an integrated product. I couldn't keep the 14 and more people, assignments, timelines, and critical path on a page I devised. So, I googled 'one page project manager' and this amazon link popped up. I bought the book, got an online copy all on Friday night. By Monday, I had my entire project on the form and by Tuesday, I sent it to the management team. They loved it. The project finished on time and within budget thanks to the tool. A critical path tool may have helped but the project was small enough that by plotting the assignments, I could see the critical path. Great Excel tool!

5 out of 5 stars Simple and effective record of accountability and progress.......2007-08-06

This is one of those great books that delivers what it says it will. The OPPM tool will be useful to anyone who manages projects, and for executives who want to monitor performance without information overload.

I've been using the one-page format to record output from the executive team planning sessions I facilitate. It provides a straightforward summary with clear time-lines and accountability. It is very useful during the follow up sessions!

You can get a good idea of how the OPPM works by first visiting the resources page on the onepageprojectmanager.com website. Then buy the book to find out how to put your one-pager together.

4 out of 5 stars to the point, easy to use.......2007-08-02

Modest book size but the information is suffecient to gain a good understanding of the tool. The one page project manager is all about communicating with seniior management.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent toolbox for experts and beginners........2007-04-14

Easy to read, easy to understand, easy to start working with.
An extremely useful toolbox of concepts ready to be used immediately.
    The book reads flawlessly.
It has helped us to design projects in a structured form and to follow them in a very simple way. We have saved time, but gained in precission.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for the Entepreneur.......2007-08-13

This book is exactly what the title describes itself as: a theory and method of creating a one page proposal. It's best suited for the entepreneur pitching venture capitalists. I got some ideas from it, but wasn't as helpful as I'd hoped for what I needed. One thing I'd have liked would have been a job aid/chart with the section titles and brief highlight of what to include.

5 out of 5 stars Cut through the clutter. Get you proposal noticed and read........2007-08-07

It took just 2 hours hours to read. The instructions are simple (not simplistic) and easy to follow. The prescription will help you get your thinking clear. The one pager will get your message read and noticed. Decision makers - who are normally inundated with unstructured requests for their attention and support - will appreciate the format.

A range of examples show you how the concept has worked for the author and others.

    3 out of 5 stars A perfect solution .......2007-03-02

I stumbled upon this at the Chicago Public Library. After reading it and returning it I didn't think much of it. For some reason, however, it stuck with me.

After Amazon delivered it I remembered why it stuck with me: the concept is perfect for putting down just the parts of an idea or project you need to remember and those you need to convey. It is perfect in its simplicity.

I use this format extensively and find that it helps both me and the reader stay focused on the key points. I highly recommend both the method and the book. This, Tom Sant's Persuasive Business Proposals and Powerful Proposals by David G. Pugh and Terry R. Bacon may be the only books on proposal anyone needs!

5 out of 5 stars Professional Proposals in One Concise Page!.......2006-12-12

Well, I'm done writing 10-15 page proposals that are just glanced thru. The One-Page Proposal provides a methodology to concisely present your complete proposal on one page. It saves you time in the proposal process and provides your potential client with a very focused proposal. I rate this one a winner and am now using this exclusively for client proposals. It works and it saves time!

3 out of 5 stars The 1-page concept is good, but this book is not so good..........2006-11-10

...unless you have very little business writing experience. The 1-page concept is valid, but this book and its examples are unimpressive (and sometimes dull, naive and self congratulating). Still, it might be worth a quick read for some of you, which is why I'll give it 3 stars. Note: I probably should have given it 2 stars since some of these other reviews are so over the top positive that to me they are not credible (I almost think they were written by shills).

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars shaken, not stirring.......2006-07-26

Ken Blanchard's little One Minute Manager books define a genre.

Neither riveting reading nor high-stakes illumination, they simply get a message across effectively to the management reader who is not too concerned with aesthetics. Even the illustrations are garden-variety basic.

Yet these books have sold millions and they work.

The One Minute Manager Balances Work and Life presents the usual contrived encounter between the One Minute Manager and another of the usual subjects, this time the Professor. Somewhat off the beaten path, this time it is the One Minute Manager Himself who is desperately in need. Since we last saw him contentedly setting the organization world right, he has foolishly transformed himself into an overweight, out-of-breath victim of his own success.

    Bad One Minute Manager!

This gives him the chance to narrate his own turn-around process, a conversion that I must admit I find rather inspiring.

Along the way one is treated to the usual locked doors when he tries to slip away from responsibility for the situation. This habit of assigning personal responsibility is perhaps one of the keys to the success of this series.

If you need to balance work and life, pick up one of these little books on the cheap.

4 out of 5 stars Title is deceiving.......2005-12-17

I'm guessing the book was retitled to what is now to attract more readers. However, the content doesn't match the title. This is all about the importance of staying fit and being healthy. If that's what you're looking for, this book is for you. But if you're looking to balance work/life, there are better books to purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The One Minute Manager Takes Care of Himself!.......2003-04-26

This book was originally published under the title "The One Minute Manager Gets Fit." An even better title would have been "The One Minute Manager Takes Care of Himself." The entire volume emphasizes the importance of taking of oneself so that effectiveness in all other areas of life will be at a maximum.

There are four components presented here to insure a fit, healthy life: autonomy, connectedness, perspective and tone. Autonomy pertains to getting control of one's personal schedule so that there is enough time for self-care. Connectedness refers to having a strong, interpersonal support network to keep on track with proper fitness, nutrition, etc. Perspective pertains to how well one views his own life. Tone refers to the actual physical condition and health of a person's body, mind and emotions.

This title should be at the top of the list for "One Minute" fans. The format is the same as all the other books in the series and the principles are life-changing. For some persons, this book may even be life-saving!

5 out of 5 stars Setting the tone.......2002-11-12

For a change, the One Minute Manager is a student in this book. Despite his professional success and fame, he realizes that he has neglected his own physical well being over the years. Then comes a professor who teaches him to put physical fitness first.

There is a simple questionnaire (The Professor's dozen) that the one minute manager needs to answer. It applies to all of us. Depending on the score on this, one may decide the true state of ones "Tone", the word that is used to describe the physical well being of the individual. The four parameters (or moderators that prevent stress) responsible for sustained success in work and life are:

    1. Autonomy : The availability of many choices that give good control in life
    2. Connectedness : Strong positive relationship at home, at work and in the community
    3. Perspective: The direction, purpose and passion about what one is doing.
    4. Tone: The feeling about the body, energy level, physical well being and appearance.

In a remarkable way, the clear connection between Tone as the enabler for the other three moderators is brought out in this book. The illustrations that support the concepts are excellent.

Organizations spend billions of dollars in health care and suffer productivity loss due to the lack of physical well being of their employees. Employees on the other hand are sacrificing their health in the process of achieving career advancement. "In early life, people give up their health to gain wealth. Then, later in life they give up some wealth to regain health."

This book is for HR managers and employees at all levels to help achieve substantial gains for the Organization; through employee well being that needs serious attention; as much as we do for career planning.

5 out of 5 stars Straightforward and easy to undestand.......2002-04-03

This book was originally published in 1986 as "The One Minute Manager Gets Fit" and is well worth every minute you take to read it! It is written in the classic "one minute manager" style and shows you exactly how you can balance your life by adjusting your lifestyle. I enjoyed the easy to read layout and found it to be a quick, yet revolutionary, read. I picked it up on a lark and I'm glad I did. It's never to late (or too early) to start becoming healthy. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get their life in order, but thinks they are too busy to dedicate the time to start.

    Book Description

One Page management helps you implement the principles in The One Minute Manager. Key to success is access to information. But busy managers are drowning in a sea of useless data. One Page Management Teaches a simple screening system that reduces the glut of memos, printouts, and files to three one-page reports, giving managers a complete view of their organization. Achievers become visible, problems are short-circuited, and managers gain control over their own performance. As in the One Minute Manager, the system unfolds in a simple parable: an executive turns around a floundering company with the ingenious help of "the Infoman."

Published in hardcover in 1986 and in paperback in 1989, One Page Management is available nationwide and has been translated into twelve languages. Updated to address today's business concerns, it works for any business - from large corporation to start-up.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Treatment for franchise management per E-myth.......2006-12-13

Okay, I bought the book for 50 cents at the local library.

So? I believe this book, combined with the book One Page Business Plan will allow you to lead and manage any size business from 0 to 30,000 people.

Notice how I used the word "Treatment" in the title of this review? Well a treatment is a one to two page document for explaining the plot and timing of a screenplay/tv show--it's peaks/valleys/growth and development. This is a common thing to do in the entertainment industry for a show that's from 30 minutes to 2 1/2 hours long.

How long do you want your business to run? Buy both books. Build a better business. Live more life. ;)

4 out of 5 stars Works if you are alone or at a corporate.......2006-06-16

I bought this book many years ago while I was a sales engineer in a small company.. at first I thought this would be helpful when I someday would be part of a major corp.

Now that I do belong to a corp I realice that the principles set here can help you in your personal goals as well.. fun and practical book in the style of a story

5 out of 5 stars A very practical and simple approach.......2003-10-17

A mythical Brian Scott was selected as president and CEO of a struggling company for his unique ability to get to the heart of the problem and implement effective solutions, being given two years of freedom to implement change. As he took up the challenge he planned a short-term strategy of cost controls, inventory reductions, cash flow and firing key people while seeking a long-term solution to ensure the future growth of the company. But he also knew that "If you don't know what's wrong, you can't fix it." Scott was aware that financial statements could not tell him the whole story; he also needed opinions from top management. So he asked everybody open-ended questions such as " Why do you think the company is in trouble?" He found that almost everyone blamed someone else or a different department and it was clear that coordination and cooperation fell well short of the optimum. Lack of communication, finger pointing, refusal to accept responsibility, information overload, and lack of concise relevant data were among the symptoms plaguing the company. Scott was unable to get answers to his basic questions and the fact that he was ten levels removed from his first-line supervisors did not help.

He realized that he had to find the truth for himself and that relying solely on the impressions of others might give him a view that could be far from reality. Scott had two problems - getting to know a new, large company quickly and then keeping abreast of what is going on. The reporting process did not give him the real problems nor did it give him the opportunities being missed. He had a pile of information that had to be screened - a process he did not have time for. He decided to put all key information on three one-page reports:
    - Report #1: Focus Report giving key information on what you do
    - Report #2: Feedback Report giving the good news and bad news about what you do
    - Report #3: Manager Report giving the good news and bad news about what your people do

He then had to answer the question "How do you define success?" This leads to defining success factors such as profitability, market share, debt ratio or a motivated, productive and unified work force and then putting a number to each factor to show where he was now and where he wanted to be within a specified time frame. He finished up with too many factors which required culling to determine the Critical Success Factors. Then he had to relate the Critical Success Factors to the departments providing the information.

The information above was culled from Part I of the book which continues with Part II: One Page Management, Part III: Linking the One Page Reports, Part IV: The Power of One Page Management. In today's competitive environment many companies will go out of business in the next few years or will at least face a tough struggle. The approach in this book is very helpful as it focuses attention on getting key information. It is difficult to see how this book could not make a difference to most people. Few of us have the perfect system in place. When was the last time we asked "Am I getting the information I need to be successful in my job in a speedy, concise and useful form?" The fact that Dennis Scholl, President of Signal Capital Corporation could write "I was so excited by One Page Management that I spent the bulk of my vacation reading it three times. We have now implemented the system for our sales force and it has already made a noticeable difference", suggests that the authors have pinpointed a problem experienced by many companies and that the authors have presented a solution in a readable and readily applicable manner. dwillis@afs.edu.gr

4 out of 5 stars Getting the information edge.......2000-10-30

In this informaiton age, how information is collected, managed and used will determine the success of modern organizations. From a slow paper based information system to high speed digital information system the modern business came a long way and now the quantum of information that flows in has been increased multifold. Though informaiton is a must for modern organizations, not all the information is relevant to all the people. For managing modern organizations in this complex boarderless world, one needs greater focus. One page management helps in solving the problem of processing of high volume information and creating focus for managers of all levels to run the business in the right directions. Written in the style of "One Minute" books of Dr. Kenneth Blanchard, this book helps managers of all levels in setting key success areas suitable for their level of responbility and allign their goals with the organization's goals. A must read for all those who is managing in today's complex business and prefer clarity and focus.

5 out of 5 stars If you are overloaded with information, read it........1998-11-22

This book shows the nowadays problem that most managers have: too much information to review with too little time to do it. From the supplier: The Insurance Research Council surveyed 1,991 men and women and found consumers are more willing to support efforts to crack down on insurance fraud in 1996 than they were in 1991. Almost half of those surveyed were willing to pay an extra $1 on their automobile insurance policy to fund police investigations of automobile theft and insurance fraud. Results of another survey by the Colation Against Insurance Fraud are compared.
