Customer Reviews:
Catherine Harris - Great Book.......2004-09-13
The author does a great job at providing the information necessary for Teleocommunications Management. I'm a manager with SBC a large telco in St. Louis. The only item I see missing from this book as with other books is the importanace of the ability to manage management. As a telecom manager, I'm not very good at managing people or admitedly have much knowledge of telecom, but I'm great at managing my management which has allowed me to progress. This book needs to not only reflect the managerial concepts of technology, but of salesmanship and the real world scenerios I run into every day. I do however feel this is a great reference for general telecommunications information and would recommend people read it.
A great book of enterprise telecommunication system design.......2001-08-30
I think the book covers a complete discussion of every telecommunication facility development topic. The book starts from basic issues, such as selecting equipments and using them, to the cost analysis of develop the system. This makes the book comfortable for telco manager who never did business telecommunication system development before. I think this book is perfect for every telco manager. This book is, I think, also suitable for engineers and technicians to open and broaden the cost analysis of systems developed. I think the author is an expert in enterprise telecommunication system design and knows what he is doing.
As a courtesy, I attach the correct table of content...

History.......2007-07-12
Ellen does an excellent job recording history. What is unfortunate is that history is ephemeral on the net. Ellen's book is no longer in print - I ponied up for a used copy simply for the record of what transpired and I am glad to have it.
Out of touch and out of date.......2002-04-19
I have to agree with one of my fellow reviewers - this book is way too technical and dry. With heavy, heavy chapters devoted to the development of the domain name system, trademark challenges, dispute case studies etc., The Domain Name Handbook reads more like a govenment manual than an istructive and entertaining piece of writing. Ten out of ten for so much research but not many out of ten for entertainment value, (and, yes, even an instruction manual can be enetertaining).... Theirwell-linked pages will take you some interesting routes to wherever the real knowledge lies.
If you're a sucker for tables, lists, facts, data and specifics, this book with inform. If, like me, you prefer that learning should be fun, you'll find yourself in the wrong hands here. In any case, the book was published in mid 1998 and, with so much having happened on the Web, is in dire need of a revised update.
Way too Technical.......2001-03-13
This book is way too technical and dry. Domain Names for Dummies treats the subject matter in a much more enjoyable and business-oriented fashion.
The user is left with little useful information and usable next steps.
Thorough, detailed delivering what it promises.......2000-08-08
The Domain Name Handbook; High Stakes and Strategies in Cyberspace by Ellen Rony, Peter R. Rony
This was the first book I purchased in my search tomake sense of the domain name business. It provides great information on the details of the domain name naming system and the history of the organizations involved. It also provides excellent information on trademark considerations and issues. If you are an attorney, or anyone seriously getting into the domain name business, you should have this in your library.
Rony is highly knowledgeable about the minutiae of the domain name registration rules, and offers a great history with some examples of cases of trademark cases and squatting that are highly useful for understanding the way things work. She's now consulting as an expert in this area, a clear sign that her expertise is credible with corporations and courts.
The book does not cover such considerations as the creative and business consideration process of coming up with a unique domain name. There's another book that goes into this topic in more detail--How to choose and Protect a great Name for Your website.
Neither book covers factors which contribute to the value of a dmain name, finding better prices for name registration, websites and strategies for doing research on names you are considering.

The Most Comprehensive Domain Name Resource to Date!.......2000-07-19
Remember the old saying, "What's in a name?" A name should represent a well known company, person, quality workmanship, products, and services. Nothing could be more true when we consider what is involved in registering and using domain names today. Ellen Rony and Peter Rony have written The Domain Name Handbook to provide readers with a considerable amount of detailed information about this often overlooked but essential element of establishing an online presence.
When a company or person takes action to establish themselves online it is necessary for them to come up with a unique domain name that clearly represents the nature of their products, services, or other stated purposes of the Website. Sounds easy enough but this is not necessarily the case. One of the most hotly contested aspects of setting up a Website today is the selection and ownership of a domain name. There are a number of factors to take into consideration in this crucial decision making process. Ellen Rony and Peter Rony do a masterful job of exposing the many pitfalls that could spell disaster for anyone wishing to set up shop online today.
This 650-page book is packed with extensive information about many of the legal challenges that have been waged over the registration and use of domain names, including alleged copyright violations, trademark infringement, and actual court cases. This is the most comprehensive resource for domain name dispute case studies to date. It is heavily footnoted. Thumb through it to read up on what real people have experienced themselves. Many of the accounts will expose the darker side of the business world we compete in!
According to the documentation provided in this book some big name companies have gone after smaller companies and persons (and vice versa), who have registered domain names already trademark protected by existing laws. Some of the laws currently pertaining to Internet domain name use have not been etched in stone as of yet but information provided in this book will help chart the course. The accompanying CD and a Website offer supplemental reading material. Although these resources offer plenty in terms of legal proceedings, the authors recommend that readers consult their attorneys for solid legal advice!
Perhaps through no fault of your own you may one day find yourself the focus of an infringement case. Be prepared to face these challenges today. This book is must reading for Website designers, Web business consulting firms, attorneys, and companies doing business online!

Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money!.......2000-12-20
The Online Teaching Guide I am sorry to say does not live up to its cover. It unfortunately does not cover in any depth the conceptual and practical issues as they relate to the online classroom and as for helping you overcome the challenges that confront all online instructors, sorry the book misses the mark totally. Most of the chapters are weak and tenuous to say the least and will offer little help to any on-line tutors or facilitators. The book has a rather macabre fixation with 'flaming' and the Wizard of Oz and the attempts at humour are to say the least somewhat strained. There are also a number of elementary mistakes in the actual text, for instance ' Human begins are "sense making" creatures', Chapter 2 page 14 and they get worse throughout the book. Maybe the authors were so emotive about the subject that he couldn't be bothered to read what they had written. Unfortunately I did and I wish I had not bothered. Don't be a mug like me and buy this book I am sure that there have to be some better texts on this interesting subject around.
For Academics Only.......2000-07-05
This book is a compendium of white papers, by academics, of academics and for academics. It discusses "what" is Online Teaching, and the authors throw in a few common sense suggestions (although these may seem like revelations to those who don't know Internet Technology well).
It is appropriate for secondary and college teachers who are not sophisticated I-Net users. It is not that helpful outside of an academic setting.
Don't Go Virtual Without It!.......2000-02-02
To date most books about online learning have focused on academic research or institutional policy. White and Weight have now added a solid practitioner's guide to the literature. The Online Teaching Guide, published in October 1999, consists of a collection of 14 individually authored essays and articles on the art of being an online instructor. Each of the authors borrows on his or her own experience teaching for the University of Phoenix's online campus to shed light on different aspects of how to facilitate a classroom environment in cyberspace. Ken White begins the collection by writing on the importance of understanding that the virtual classroom is first and foremost not a lonely place created by technology but a crucible for human communication. "As in any social venture, people are imprecise, unclear and unpredictable," writes White. This theme, that the virtual classroom is an experiment in human communication, is repeated throughout the individual essays. The job of the online instructor, argues each of the authors, is to understand and direct non-verbal communication so that students experience a learning environment that captures a high level of student interest and enjoys high levels of student retention. The book is rich with real life examples and practitioner's tips for executing them. In the essay "The Elements of Effective Online Teaching," Anita Bischoff, Director of Academic Affairs at the University of Phoenix, outlines a communication matrix that requires the online instructor to communicate presence by providing regular feedback, maintaining public course visibility, selecting and directing students to high quality learning materials, and removing obstacles to student retention. Bischoff provides helpful, practical examples of how an instructor can achieve each of these elements. This book contributes a great deal to our practical understanding of how real-life instructors are successfully creating and maintaining e-classrooms using asynchronous platforms. The only disappointment of the book is that contributions were limited to instructors who have practiced at a single college, The University of Phoenix Online. A diversity of institutional voices would have resulted in a richer, more eclectic reader for use in educating the next generation of virtual professors. Summary evaluation: This is a top-notch, e- instructor's survival guide. Don't go virtual without it.

Mary Cronin wrote the very first book about doing business on the Internet, and her latest contribution continues in her pioneering and practical efforts at explaining the net to practical-minded managers. This is a collection of ten essays written by information managers and consultants for information managers and consultants. Includes contributions from high level employees of Genentech, Dow Jones, Digital, and Lockheed, among other high-powered and effective users of information technologies.

Switchbusiness.......2001-05-23
Internet commerce makes or breaks a business depending on customer sensitivity, data privacy, the fit with business transaction systems already in place, good electronic work spaces and training programs, guaranteed delivery of goods and services, and transaction tracking. Mary J Cronin looks at net presences that have done well by accessing critical competitive and technical information, cutting costs, handling new marketing and sales demands, and increasing revenues and satisfaction among customers and employees. THE INTERNET STRATEGY HANDBOOK shows the successful information spread on the Internet by Dow Jones, Lockheed Martin, and Schlumberger; the successful net marketing by Digital Equipment Corporation and Millipor; and the successful research and development strategies by Genentech. Her book is a compelling read into all the possibilities with an Internet presence. It breaks ground with Simson Garfinkel's WEB SECURITY AND COMMERCE, Douglas Gerlach's THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO ONLINE INVESTING, Mellanie Hills' INTRANET BUSINESS STRATEGIES, Harris Kern's MANAGING THE NEW ENTERPRISE, and Don Tapscott's THE DIGITAL ECONOMY.

Customer Reviews:
Decent intro into the concepts behind migration........2007-03-14
This book can help many people new to asp > .net migration get into the swing of things. There are several parts of the book that take you through the logic of replacing old asp constructs to .net ones.
Good example is a section of the book dedicated to explaining that old
<%if... response.write stuff should be replaced with labels... the use of repeaters instead of manually building tables up in loops.
I was tasked with an asp > asp.net migration job a few years ago & this book helped out a bit to learn what I was supposed to be doing different since both languages support a lot of the old crappy constructs from classic asp like render tags...

Kim Bayne's The Internet Marketing Plan provides a marketing plan geared toward Web commerce and covers the middle ground between marketing and Web technology. Marketers who are seeking the basics on Web site design or HTML-savvy technicians who are looking for marketing basics can use this book as an outline for their business plans.
Because Bayne's book is dense with information, it's easier to skip around rather than read it cover to cover. Activities augment some of the book's sections and you can use hands-on investigation to reinforce other concepts within the book. The Internet Marketing Plan's diskette contains documents, spreadsheets, and forms that guide the reader through marketing plan creation. Bayne also offers several worthwhile applications of Web technology that can fortify different areas of your company's business.
Customer Reviews:
Outdated.......2000-09-16
This book was great 2 years ago, now it's a history book.
Simple is best.......2000-04-14
I am also a small business and struggle to understand the technology that we need to know to keep up! Bayne's book is right on our office reference shelf along with Margo Komenar's Electronic Marketing.Writing a book and running a small business is hard work-give us a break!
Self centered and outdated.......1999-07-31
One could rewrite the book on half the pages- just take out the outdated references, the self-centered self-apraisals of the author plus the party-dialogues. Then- after you reduced the webpages listings to those that still exist and took out some of the too basic checklists- you might have a tool worthwhile spending $ 15 for. I was somewhat surprised that such reputable publisher would put its name behind such a book.
Not bad if you are at the VERY begining...........1999-06-09
There are some good ideas for those at the infant level of an internet presence. If you have already started, don't bother with this one. The format is very much like a school book which make navigation easy. No need to read from front to back.
Out of date & Barely useful!.......1999-04-15
The book needs serious updating being that it was written some time ago, and the Internet changes rapidly. However, if you would like to know what the Internet was like back in 1986, and are ready to base a marketing plan on this then the book's for you! I ordered this book hoping to find quantitative information and in depth advice on approaching the Internet from marketing stand point. It was hard to scrape the pages to come up with anything of use. A basic marketing plan outline, a beginners guide to the internet, and some common sense will bring you a lot further than this book. Some of the links in the bookmark file did not work. If you're online reading this, you basicaly have no use for the book!

Customer Reviews:
A horrible book for a horrible class.......2007-07-03
As the previous reviewer pointed out this book is out of date and just wrong in some cases. My professor used this book during lecture and discussed in detail parts of it (where were incidentally out of date).
A friend of mine, Eric Corley, who manages a computer related magazine is mentioned, but they spelled his name wrong! (And this is the second edition).
If you're a professor looking to get a text for an intro to e-commerce class, please god buy this book, then burn it, and then choose a different text.
Screaming fits - is what this book gave me........2005-11-01
I am stuck using this book. It is so bad I do not know where to start .... outdated, imprecise, inconsistent and incorrect terminology, contradicting itself and what I can describe as an "emotional" rather than technical writing style. Lack of simple clarifying examples. Misleading figures. Many key terms are defines multiple times in a different and misleading way.
Let me just give FEW exampes:
1. It is so very out of date - it does not even mention DSL, it goes on forever about dial-up!
2. Quote: "Infrared transmission operates at frequencies approaching the speed of light". I am not sure what that means, last time I checked frequency and speed were two different things.
3. p. 132, "Portal: a Web page that offers links to other sites". According to this ANY old web page is a portal.
4. p. 165, "Internet Service Provider (ISP): a specialiazed company that connects customers with PCs and browsers to the Internet". Sorry - you are out of luck if you are running a server, or do not intend to use a browser!
5. p.218 - range for WLAN is listed as "only 150 feet", VS , p.219 range for a WLAN from less than 100 to 300 feet.
6. talks abotut KM (knowledge management) in Ch 5 but never defines it.
7. loves imprecise expressions with little substance like "information super highway", "entrance ramp to the internet", "virtually unstoppable", "possibilities are truly endless"
8. figure 14-7 labeled "Quantum computing", while displaying an eliptic curve.
It feels like the author was just hurrying to get yet another book out in an area in which he lacked serious expertise.
