5 out of 5 stars Refreshing book on overhyped subject.......2004-06-20

I've read one book after another about attaining a viable knowledge management solution using corporate portals, and was left wanting because the books either required great leaps of faith or were little more than marketing hype. This book closes all of the gaps between theory and practical application, and backs up assertions with a wealth of case studies that prove the connection between the goal (KM) and the means (portals).

In the first part of the book the authors address knowledge management and portals at the conceptual level. The second part is comprised of case studies that fully support the concepts by showing how results were achieved in a large number of corporate settings. Each case is a study in specific goals and objectives unique to companies that embarked on KM initiatives, and are diverse enough to overlap with your own goals and objectives. The important material covers barriers, how they were overcame, results and how they improved business operations.

The authors are subject matter experts who come across as credible and factual, and the content of this book is accurate and hype-free. I like the way they place KM and portals within the context of business objectives, and the way they impart their extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of KM and portals. It's obvious that they are writing from the trenches, and equally obvious that they maintain an objective view throughout the book. Another aspect of this book that I like is how carefully they chose and documented the case studies. Each goes to the essence of concepts in the first part of the book, and clearly show that KM can be effectively achieved through correctly designed and implemented corporate portals. It's worth noting that Appendix B, "Technical criteria to select a corporate portal platform", is an invaluable tool for readers who are seriously considering an implementation.

If you only read one book about corporate portals this is the one I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Practice Case Studies.......2004-02-15

I found this book to be a well researched and practical book for senior executives that want to clearly understand what an enterprise portal is, what the value is, and how to execute a portal strategy. I particularly found the lessons learned and best practices as very helpful insights. Highly recommend this book to be read by any one in senior management that needs the fundamentals, but also more experienced professionals implementing portal strategies.

5 out of 5 stars Keep this book a secret..........2003-08-26

This is the kind of book I actually hesitate to recommend because it is so good my greedy side wants to hoard the valuable knowledge it contains! I am in the "knowledge management" business and believe reading this book has given me a competitive advantage. I also believe that an organization seeking to deploy a knowledge portal of any kind should have this book beside them at all times. José Claudio Terra and Cindy Gordon get to the heart of what all the spending on "portals" is for: to drive value in your business. They also provide a roadmap for ensuring your efforts and spending don't go down as yet another misguided IT boondoggle. The 10 recent and originally researched case studies are like gold. This is a very good book. David Brett, CEO, Knexa.

5 out of 5 stars Practitioner's Point of View.......2003-05-27

I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Cindy Gordon and Dr. Claudio Terra recently at the Knowledge Management Conference in New York, where I attended a workshop with them. Their depth of knowledge in this area is world-class, and the insights they shared in their new book demystified the realities of implementing enterprise corporate portals. Their business strategy accumen, and balanced practical experiences make them a refreshing change to consultants with no substance - as they are experts with strong proven credentialing. What prompted me to write this review was their humbleness in their workshop and openness to learn from us as attendees. Their appetite for learning from those around them was very refreshing and I am looking forward to their next book as well.

1 out of 5 stars Not so great.......2004-09-03

I seleected this as a textbook for a college course on portal design. My students hated it, and I don't blame them.

The writing is very hard to understand. The examples and processes are for very large, very complex IS shops and do not readily translate to other contexts.

I based my selection in large part on the positive reviews I had read here, so I am left wondering who those reviewers are and what book they read...

I would not recommend this book to anyone unless you are a CIO or senior IS manager at a large company, in which case you probably don't need it anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Enterprise Portal Boosting Productivity and Profitability.......2003-10-20

Enterprise Knowledge Portals is a good reference book that is relevant to both a business and IT audience. Heidi Collins rightly reminds her audience that the enterprise portal should be designed around and be implementing the organization's knowledge management strategy. The enterprise portal is key to manage and communicate knowledge within an organization and to eventually share part of it with strategic external constituencies. Collins briefly describes the existing four portal categories: enterprise information portals, e-business and e-commerce portals, mobile commerce portals and Internet portals. Over time, a portal could metamorphose itself into a hybrid creature that offers the functionality of different portal categories to meet the needs of multiple constituencies.

Enterprise portal is gaining increasing acceptance because there is great value in having a single repository for all the information knowledge workers need to do their job. Knowledge workers should not waste their precious time locating information or answering questions again and again that could be addressed on the enterprise portal. In the process, innovation could get a definitive boost by facilitating both internal and external collaboration. Enterprise portal strategy should not be separated from alliance strategy for that reason.

A portal reporting team made up of cross-functional members from diverse business functions should be identified to get widespread buy-in. The portal reporting team could meet resistance or deal with skepticism from entrenched interests that are happy with the status quo. An executive sponsor is key to deal with these eventual obstacles effectively. A budget roadmap should also be defined to keep track of costs associated with the project and facilitate ROI calculation.

Portal components should be defined and organized around work processes and then prioritized. Data and/or applications needed to support portal components should be determined and documented. Data should be scrubbed, mapped and validated to guarantee credibility. Security and confidentiality should not be overlooked in the process.

When the portal is ready to be launched, one individual or a dedicated team should be identified as the single contact responsible for managing the portal and keeping its content fresh and relevant to the target audience. Before making the portal widely accessible, a portal pilot is advisable. Usage should be tracked. Furthermore, the pilot audience should be surveyed on a regular basis to foster acceptance, document key learnings and tweak the portal wherever necessary.

The portal management should keep in mind that the portal is a collective effort that requires buy-in from multiple constituencies to avoid stall content. Roles and responsibilities should be clearly delineated to insure accountability on that point. Ultimately, a portal is dynamic because its objectives are associated with corporate strategy and vision.

As portal project manager and administrator in addition to my marketing roles and responsibilities in a large company, I have only one regret about Enterprise Knowledge Portals. Some portal pages reproduced are generic screen snapshots that have little bearing on what a portal reporting and/or managing team is expected to tackle in the life of such a project.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for serious Knowldge Portal Architects.......2003-06-30

Finally there is a book on what it takes to rollout an Enterprise Knowledge Portal (EKP). A lot has been written and said by Analysts, Vendors and other experts on the EKP subject but when it comes to actually how to implement EKPs, there isn't much out there other than vendor's marketing hype and analyst's `reports regurgitation'. Now Heidi, through her practical EKP implementation experience, has written this masterpiece to demystifies the EKP implementation roadmap with easy to understand templates that guide you through entire rollout process. What I find interesting is that Heidi provides numerous benchmarks to set realistic expectation at each phase of EKP implementation. I strongly recommend this book to IT planners, architects, managers as well as the project team who are serious to implement successful EKP in their organizations.

    Book Description

Adopting an informational perspective towards knowledge work, this book investigates how enterprise portals can promote knowledge creation, distribution, and use. Moving beyond the design and delivery of portals as mere information retrieval tools, an enterprise portal is viewed as a shared information work space that can facilitate communication and collaboration among organizational workers, as well as support the browsing, searching, and retrieval of information content. Adopting an information vantage point, the book uniquely explores the human issues surrounding enterprise portal adoption and use, as well as the utilization of intelligent agents to ameliorate the use of portals for knowledge-based tasks. The result is a novel, rich and comprehensive discussion on the factors affecting the design and utilization of enterprise portals for knowledge work, suitable for both graduate-level students and organizational workers alike.

5 out of 5 stars Portals AND KM.......2006-04-21

This excellent book is designed to introduce the reader to portal technology and architecture, give him or her an explanation of the leading portal products, and show how well they deliver the promise of facilitating knowledge management within organizations. It succeeds very well in this, and will prove to be an excellent reference for a variety of readers. Managers can gain an overview of the reasons for and promise of portals; system architects will find out how they integrate with data warehouses and information management systems; and everyone will learn that the notion of a "Knowledge" portal requires more than has been stated in the many loose uses of the term so far.
In fact the book is a good explanation of the author's approach to knowledge management, which is the most rigorous and logically sound approach that I know of. He takes the ideas of "knowledge", "knowledge processing" and "knowledge management" very seriously, and this book will give the reader a good understanding of this. He then analyzes portal technology in the light of this view of KM, and specifies what a portal must be in order to allow the implementation of true, "third-generation" KM.
As such the book is different, and possibly unique, both in the depth of its analysis, and the clarity of its logic.
I can thoroughly recommend this book to those want to understand portals, and those who need to understand KM, particularly those who have become cynical about it. The analysis of the combination of both in the "enterprise knowledge portal" that the author gives is better than anything that I have seen before.

2 out of 5 stars "No one understands...".......2004-10-21

The single line spacing makes the contents very hard to read. The contents are of very high level stuff. They may be good for IT managers or architecturers, but are hardly valuable for developers. If you are a developer, be careful that, as the KMWorld Magazine says, "No one understands ...".

        Description:
Knowledge management has become increasingly critical for the success of companies in this emerging era of e-commerce. As business activities increasingly shift to the web, the challenge facing corporate management is maintaining competitive advantage by building strong relations with employees, customers, and upstream/downstream suppliers and partners. A good knowledge management strategy can help achieve this goal. Unfortunately, many companies use knowledge management technologies that do not suit today's new information era. Therefore, it is important to understand how companies can successfully implement knowledge management programs that will help them to gain competitive advantage. Most experts agree that the biggest challenges of knowledge management are not technological but human-based or behavioral challenges. This paper addresses these problems by tracing the evolution of knowledge management in e-commerce and identifying strategies that are currently in use. We will demonstrate how companies can benefit by adopting strategies that harness the potential of knowledge management technologies to transform their e-business activities. We define knowledge management; then provide an overview of the driving and impeding forces that help and hinder proper deployment of knowledge management strategies in e-commerce. Then we describe approaches and implementation architectures currently in use by companies who are integrating knowledge management into their e-commerce activities. Finally, we suggest a strategic approach that can overcome the limitations in systems presently in use as well as implications for future knowledge management development.

              Product Description

A major challenge of today’s information systems is to provide employees with precisely the information they need for fulfilling their current business tasks. Information appears in structured databases accessible through operational and analytical application systems as well as unstructured office documents, emails, etc. With the convergence of portal and knowledge management technology, enterprise portals are the solution of choice for providing integrated access to both structured and unstructured information. They are more and more seen as a "standard workplace" due to their ability to combine different applications and resources on a single web based user interface. This book analyzes how Semantic Web technologies can help building integrative enterprise knowledge portals. The main contribution is a novel context-based approach for semantic interportlet communication. The book is recommended to readers who are interested in the research contributions, but also to those looking for a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art of the underlying technologies.
