Book Description
Lessons from database research have been applied in academic fields ranging from bioinformatics to next-generation Internet architecture and in industrial uses including Web-based e-commerce and search engines. The core ideas in the field have become increasingly influential. This text provides both students and professionals with a grounding in database research and a technical context for understanding recent innovations in the field. The readings included treat the most important issues in the database area -- the basic material for any DBMS professional.
This fourth edition has been substantially updated and revised, with 21 of the 48 papers new to the edition, four of them published for the first time. Many of the sections have been newly organized, and each section includes a new or substantially revised introduction that discusses the context, motivation, and controversies in a particular area, placing it in the broader perspective of database research. Two introductory articles, never before published, provide an organized, current introduction to basic knowledge of the field; one discusses the history of data models and query languages and the other offers an architectural overview of a database system. The remaining articles range from the classical literature on database research to treatments of current hot topics, including a paper on search engine architecture and a paper on application servers, both written expressly for this edition. The result is a collection of papers that are seminal and also accessible to a reader who has a basic familiarity with database systems.

A Gold Mine of Database Systems Topics.......2007-08-28
The book is an outstanding compilation of influential database papers in the database world. Most of the papers are readable for a senior undergraduate audience, or a graduate audience, but probably not for a first course in database systems, simply because students would need a decent understanding of database principles to fully appreciate the contents of this book.
In particular, I like the introductory commentary that Hellerstein and Stonebraker provide for each of the chapters. These are very nice summaries, and they also provide a teaser for the papers that follow in the chapter, and they justify why those papers were included. Both of the editors have the background to speak authoritatively on the subject of database systems, including OS, network, and architectural issues. The editors are not afraid to make prophetic comments about the direction of database research, and the challenges ahead, especially with respect to the Internet and the explosion of data.
I love the two introductory papers by Stonebraker and Hellerstein: "What Goes Around Comes Around" (about 40 pages), and "Anatomy of a Database System" (about 50 pages). The first is a summary of the major models of a DBMS: hierarchical, network, and relational; followed by other models of a DBMS, database, or data: entity-relationship, extended relational, semantic, object-oriented, object-relational, and semi-structured (XML). I intend to give this paper as a reading assignment to my senior undergrads (part of a 2nd database course).
The Anatomy paper is a wonderful overview of a DBMS from a systems perspective (e.g., buffering, I/Os, threads, dispatching, bottlenecks,
hardware architectures, parallelism, query rewriting, optimization, etc.) I'll have to see how this paper fits into the scheduling of the course topics before assigning it, since many of its topics require an understanding of both systems and database principles for full appreciation.
This book is definitely a keeper on my shelf. I'll revisit it many times.
Excellent readings in DB design.......2005-10-14
I am somewhat biased in that I'm taking a course which is co-taught by Hellerstein, however if you're looking to complete understand how database or transaction management systems: this will be an invaluable source of information.
Crammed into this book are a number of papers detailing the history and state of database design as it has evolved over the last 40years, including most of the semainal papers in the field.
Don't expect to read this sucker cover-to-cover, take your time, but it's a good compilation.
a nice collection.......2000-02-22
This book is well-known in academic database circles as "The Red Book" (in fact, the editors maintain a useful web site at http://redbook.cs.berkeley.edu/) and is a canonical resource in those circles. It's primarily intended as a reader/textbook for a graduate course in database systems and has a heavy emphasis on implementation issues. It contains a fair number of classic papers that should be read by anybody who actually works on database engines as well as a number of more recent papers that should be read by anyone who does research in database systems. The usefulness for end-users of databases (i.e., application writers) is unclear.
The 3rd edition, in my opinion, improves upon the 2nd edition considerably. Of course, it freshens the paper selection in some areas. More importantly, it prunes the number of subject areas considerably, resulting in a more manageable collection (in more ways than one!). For example, a great deal of work was performed in the late 1980s and early 1990s in areas such as extensibility and active database management. By the late 1990s, the SQL3/SQL1999 train had already left the station - work still goes on in these areas, but at a greatly reduced rate. Conversely, data mining and decision analysis have become hugely important areas, and the new Red Book has a section on it.
If there's a place where this book "missed the boat," it would probably be in terms of applications. The editors cut the section on user interfaces and programming models and have always ignored unstructured/semistructured data models. In these days of the Web, this choice is questionable; on the other hand, a lot of the most reasonable work in these areas has in fact appeared since 1998, so it's a bit hard to criticize with any degree of fairness!

Customer Reviews:
Your Home Library Excellent Software.......2006-08-11
This product has specific fields for the entry of all essential data about a book but is still flexible enough to allow for the
entry of information specific to a personal library. I found
the ability to put the entire data base in alphabetical order
with one click of the mouse a great feature. The instruction manual is also excellent with lots of useful information and helpful hints. If you are looking to organize a personal library its hard to imagine a better system exists anywhere.
there's a better alternative.......2006-03-18
I spent a fair amount of time looking for something like this last year and couldn't believe there weren't more options. I finally installed Book Collector from a tiny little outfit collectorz.com) and it works fine.
But here's something that mystifies me: why doesn't Amazon offer something like this? They could automatically add the information on books you buy from them.
The NYPL should be ashamed of putting this product out.......2006-01-07
I bought this off of the New York Public Library website. What an utter waste of $40. The book that comes with the software is somewhat helpful, but honestly there is no new information to anyone who has been collecting books for a while. The worst part is the "software" that you are supposed to use to catalog your books. First of all, it is difficult to install--this is always a sign of a inferior product: no product that was properly QA'd would be released in such condition. Second of all, the product is just a fancy version of a spreadsheet. I could literally use Excel or MS Access to catalog my books just as well as this software. You actually have to input EVERY piece of data associated with a book. There is no excuse for anyone with an Internet connection to have to manually input book data. I state again: it is very surprising that the New York Public Library would include this product in their stores. It is a major, major rip off and there are far superior cataloging products out there.
The product I finaly ended up using is one called Readerware (http://www.readerware.com/). Readerware, for the same amount of money ($40), allows you to scan in the barcodes of your books--the software comes with its own CueCat scanner. Then the software looks up the barcodes you entered, (using the Internet), and updates each barcode with all the available info on the book. I scanned 800+ books in about 4-5 hours. BTW, you can also use Readerware to scan in all of your DVDs and CDs, (you have to pay more to get the full version of Readware that supports books, DVDs, and CDs).
Of course, you don't have to take my recommendation to buy "Readerware", but please don't waste your money on "Your Home Library."
Disappointing.......2005-02-17
Unfortunately I concur with the semtiments of the other reviewers. I ordered the system based on the writeup in the New York Times. At least I can save the $40 price by ordering books from Amazon.com. First, I could not open the CD-ROM, but apparently the program is not useful. Second, book's main virtue is as a general discussion of book cataloguing and organizing, best suited to a collector of fine books rather than someone (like me) who buys too many and needs to find them at home, rather than duplicating an academic library setting. For the basis of my collection's organization I used The Reader's Catalog. It works great because of its index to over 40,000 books, a well thought-out plan, and the convenience of being a paperback book with complete bibiographic data on the books. Why type in an ISBN when they are easily available from Amazon or in a book like the Catalog?
Some Good Ideas But Not A Solution.......2005-02-15
According to a recent New York Times article, Kathie Coblentz has a home library she estimates at 3,600 volumes packed into a one-bedroom apartment. As a special collection cataloger for the New York Public Library she has written the book portion of this set (software, book, and binder).
Book cataloging software is an iffy proposition. My current collection (20,000+ volumes not counting 1,000+ of graphic novels) is on a computerized database. I tried many off-the shelf products and they all fail in one major aspect or another. Do you want to know what stories are in a particular collection? Do you want to know that the book crosses several genres? (a big thing in romances these days) Do you want ISBNs? searches capable of looking for primary, secondary, tertiary, etc. authors? M. Ahrens suggests software that adds data based on ISBN. But what about all of those books published before the ISBN became a standard in 1970? Value? Edition? Typeface? Binding? A collector is better off thinking about what they want to track in their collection and using a simple database program (Paradox, Access, etc.) or a configurable home inventory program.
The binder is designed for printing out a copy of your book inventory (mine changes several times a week thus making a paper record short-lived and wasteful). It is a nice addition for a complete collection (say a complete collection of first editions of a favorite author) but inadequate for any active collection.
The book is interesting but seems to apply to a perfect world. If you add to your collection, the idea of shelf numbering may not be something you want to have to keep updating in the database as books move from one shelf to another. Calculating shelf space needed is usually pretty straight forward (but always add at least 30% if you don't want to spend more time moving books than reading them.
Of course there are nuggets that cataloging novices may not have thought of and the price is not prohibitive but if you are looking for that final solution to your personal library, this is really just a signpost that can point you into better directions.

Book Description
SOFTWARE PROJECT MANAGEMENT focuses on the models used in software development and on the tools which improve the productivity and quality of the development process. This work represents definitive and late breaking research in the project management area. To further illustrate the ideas covered in the research articles, Kemerer applies them to real-world situations through the use of book-ending case studies.
Customer Reviews:
Practical insights into software project management.......2000-06-16
Chris Kemerer clearly shows his vast experience in the industry by selecting very relevant and insightful case studies to illustrate how and why projects fail and succeed. I recommend this book to all project managers that face the challenges of software project management.
Great blend of research and practice.......2000-05-17
This book nicely combines solid research findings withillustrative case studies, to provide very useful insights intofactors affecting software development productivity. Having done some consulting in the area of software project management, I found this book to be both highly relevant and insightful. The author brings to the table a wealth of research and real-world experience -- this clearly shines through in the book. The comprehensive case studies at the end of the book are most valuable, providing a practical context for the theories and models discussed in the book... I highly recommend this book to both professionals in the software development world, as well as to professors/students in the area of software engineering and management.
Author Needs Experience in the Field.......2000-01-02
I purchased this title hoping to garner some useful points that I can use in my job. Sadly, this turned out to be another book written by an academic -- someone without much experience in the field. You would be better served to find another title.

Book Description
Thompson/Strickland has always included the most recent research in strategy in a way that students can understand and apply it to business cases and problems. In addition, Thompson offers more coverage of strategy implementation than most other texts, which many instructors think is critical if students are to understand the “how” and not just the “what” and “why”. Thompson’s coverage of Michael Porter’s classic 5-forces model is clearer and more detailed than in other texts, according to reviewers. With this edition the market leader looks better than ever before, offering a new 4-color design, improved writing style, and two new chapters on global and e-commerce strategy.
Customer Reviews:
False Discription.......2007-10-22
I ordered this book for my upper level business course at the university i attend and it is complete worthless to me. I needed the cases that WERE supposed to come with the book. Yet i received only the subject matter information, needless to say i wasted my money and i had to run copies off of someone elses text book. Maybe next time i will just pay the extra $60.00! At least ill know its the right book. Thanks!
Does not have BSG online code.......2007-05-06
Same contents as the hard cover edition but this version does not come with BSG online access code. If you will need to play the Business Strategy Game online, you will need to pay $35 extra for online access code.
Language is a bit simplistic, not the type you would expect in a business textbook.
Easy read.......2007-04-01
This book is fairly easy to read. Lots of good/useful case studies.
Exellent condition.......2007-03-23
Book was in great condition. Received exactly as described. Top class seller.
The authors should find a different editor........2007-02-05
This book contains a lot of valuable information on market strategy. The content of the book is very useful, but also very wordy and repetitive. That makes gleaning the book's "meat" a very frustrating task.
Fortunately, core concepts are listed in page margins to summarize main ideas. There are also diagrams illustrating these core concepts. These will help you to skip past the fluffy content.
I think this book shows real promise but is in serious need of copy editing.
