Book Description

A new and empowering way of looking at and organizing social change! How can we move from serving soup until our elbows ache to solving chronic social ills like hunger or homelessness?  How can we break the disastrous cycle of low expectations that leads to chronic social failures?

The answers to these questions lie within Momentum, a fresh, zestful way of thinking about and organizing social change work. Today's digital tools—including but not limited to e-mail, the Web, cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), even iPods—promote interactivity and connectedness.  But as Momentum shows, these new social media tools are important not for their wizardry but because they connect us to one another in inexpensive, accessible, and massively scalable ways.

This book is OK, but doesn't have a sound outline and is disjointed. A good editor could have turned this into a much better book.

5 out of 5 stars One of Two MUST READS For Any Social Activist.......2007-04-28

This book, and the much more detailed book by Chip Heath & Dan Heath, "Made to Stick" are perfect partners in putting really actiionble public intelligence in the hands of social activitists and transpartisan political reformers. I have added both books to my list of transpartisan books.

This book focuses on digital tools for social change, on creating connected activism, on addressing the listening and communicating deficits.

The author provides a checklist of 12 points for evaluating how connected your activist organization is, another checklist of 8 points on powering the edges, and a final 95-point summary of the "Cluetrain Manifesto," another book I have reviewed. All of these are useful.

The author points out that hyperlinks subvert hierarchy, and I could not agree more. Epoch B leadership is a form of swarm leadership, and the connected collective can easily bring the hierarchical authority down.

I especially liked the author's focus on all of us being content managers. Sharing information, as Vint Cerf has said recently, is how we get a Return on Information.

The book ends with some hard-earned "Do's and Don't's" and a chapter on the future of funding for social activism.

Over-all a quick read with plenty of substance, and an excellent complement to "Made to Stick."

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Insightful....A Must Read!.......2006-10-23

Momentum is inspirational and the passion that is evoked is contagious! Reading this compelling book made me excited to understand the truth about opportunities for positive social change. Fine does an excellent job of describing the value of self-determination and how social media can help make it happen. I especially like that she goes beyond simply suggesting that people use social media, and impresses upon the reader the value of altering how we think about social change. Fine reveals the value of reducing the significance of institutional barriers and developing interpersonal relationships and networks. She encourages us to stretch how we think about participation and decision-making and to "push power to the edges". This is a must read for anyone interested in a more innovative activist community!

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read--This Book Will Start Your Wheels Turning.......2006-10-23

Wow! This book is relevant, not only for existing activist organizations (all of which should run out and buy a copy immediately), but also for any "Joe Citizen" like me who has pet issues on various local levels and who wants to effect change expeditiously.

Sprinkled with wry humor, this informative and well-written book was a pleasure to read. It is even more than a problem-solving roadmap embracing a new paradigm for the way activists can organize, communicate and define and reach goals; it is also an actual toolkit chock full of ideas on how to use what Ms. Fine terms "social media" (email, the web, wireless handhelds, etc.) to effect change. Even more concrete, Momentum includes websites that even a non-techie and would-be activist like me can use to start anything from an email petition campaign to a website where my kids' teachers can solicit funds for special projects.

While reading this book I had no less than 5 "aha" moments where I thought: "I could use that" in order to bring about change in various areas of my civic life. In fact, in a couple of cases, the information in the book spurred me to think about change in areas I had not thought of before.

I give Momentum my highest recommendation and kudos to Allison H. Fine for writing this timely book...

5 out of 5 stars The "ah ha" moments.......2006-10-11

The social justice community is consumed with daily battles. Momentum allowed me to step back and fully absorb how technology is changing the way we wage them, with Allison Fine showing not only how we can do better, but revealing some victories that I've missed along the way. I welcomed the story telling, the "ah ha" moments, and the self-effacing humor.

Book Description

A new perspective on topographic map formation and the advantages of information-based learning The study of topographic map formation provides us with important tools for both biological modeling and statistical data modeling. Faithful Representations and Topographic Maps offers a unified, systematic survey of this rapidly evolving field, focusing on current knowledge and available techniques for topographic map formation. The author presents a cutting-edge, information-based learning strategy for developing equiprobabilistic topographic maps—that is, maps in which all neurons have an equal probability to be active—clearly demonstrating how this approach yields faithful representations and how it can be successfully applied in such areas as density estimation, regression, clustering, and feature extraction. The book begins with the standard approach of distortion-based learning, discussing the commonly used Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm and other algorithms, and pointing out their inadequacy for developing equiprobabilistic maps. It then examines the advantages of information-based learning techniques, and finally introduces a new algorithm for equiprobabilistic topographic map formation using neurons with kernel-based response characteristics. The complete learning algorithms and simulation details are given throughout, along with comparative performance analysis tables and extensive references. Faithful Representations and Topographic Maps is an excellent, eye-opening guide for neural network researchers, industrial scientists involved in data mining, and anyone interested in self-organization and topographic maps.

5 out of 5 stars A New Frontier in Computational Geometry.......2000-08-05

This is the first monograph devoted to an extremely important aspect of how nature organizes the sensory surfaces in the higher vertebrates. As this work points out, all sensory surfaces in mammals exist as two dimensional maps which project (or map) onto the (folded) two dimensional surface of the cerebral cortex. Previous authors have pointed out that in the case of the visual system, the retinal surface projects onto area V1 in the occipital cortex in a manner which approximates a "quasi-conformal" complex logarithmic function. Other authors have demonstrated that the cochlear basilar membrane also maps onto the auditory cortex in a similar quasi-conformal fashion. And most obviously, the mechano-receptors in our skin map onto the their corresponding cortical sensory areas in a manner which preserves local order of the projection. The important thing to note here is that this mapping of one 2-D surface onto another 2-D surface preserves the local orthogonality of the map coordinates (defn of quasi-conformal). (In the case of the retinal coordinates, they are the simple R, theta coordinates of the visual field and, in the case of the aural (auditory) map, the coordinates appear to be sound intensity (loudness) and frequency (pitch)). Van Hulle (Kohonen, et al.) describes, in vivid detail, how several "self-organizing" algorithms can make this mapping possible. THIS IS THE IMPORTANT POINT CONVEYED IN THIS MAGNIFICENT WORK. "The underlying INFORMATION coordinates of the data being processed by these 2-D onto 2-D mappings is what 'organizes' or defines the form of the mapping." The only point which the author does not address, is the global nature of these mappings. If we consider how the edges of these 2-D maps project onto eachother, there are three possible projections. One forms an ordinary torus and, unfolded looks like the raster scan of a TV set. This mapping is what has been assumed to be what would be followed in the neural projections of the retina onto area V1, but admits an indeterminacy in that there are two "normal" directions to approach the target surface. The second type of projection, when unfolded, resembles a Mobius strip (or Klein bottle for a closed surface). The importance of this type of projection is that there is only one way for neurons to project onto this surface which removes the ambiguity of the first mapping. (This surface is said to be non-orientable and of genus one in topological terms.) If this is in fact how nature chooses to wire the retino-topic projection, then she must also admit one singular point for each "patch" of map. (Consider what happens when you "squish" a Mobius strip made out of a paper strip between two flat surfaces. There is always a "fold".) About seven years ago, when the color distribution in the mammalian visual cortex was illucidated, it was found that the projection areas were made up of a "patch work quilt" of surfaces each with a singular point about which a set of color strips was splayed (like a peacock tail). Perhaps this is the necessary singular point for this type of retinotopic map. I would hope that the author, in his next book (or edition of this book) might address the global issues of these fascinating 2-D onto 2-D mappings, both natural and computational. (Just for closure, the third possible type of 2-D onto 2-D projection forms a hyperbolic surface whose physical significance is far from clear.)

If this review makes any sense to you, Please BUY THIS BOOK! I'm sure that you will be absolutely fascinated by it's content. However, be forwarned, it would be most helpful to have read Kohonen's "Self Organizing Maps", SV, 1995 before diving into this work. It is written in a "bottom up" fashion so a careful review of the Preface and Table of Contents will help in planning a reading strategy.

5 out of 5 stars A fresh approach on topographic maps.......2000-03-30

The book presents a fresh approach on Topographic Maps, emphasizing ``equiprobabilistic'' topographic maps in which all representational units participate with the same probability in the representation. However, the text goes far beyond a monograph on this particular type of topographic maps and provides an excellent exposition of the topic of self-organizing map models in general, discussing their biological motivation and explaining in depth their connections with important statistical concepts such as vector quantization, non-parametric regression and density estimation. The practicioner will find detailed performance comparisons and psoudo code listings that tremendously facilitate an implementation of the described methods. The potential of the newly introduced equiprobabilistic topographic maps is amply demonstrated with detailed treatments of a broad range of application topics. I am convinced that this book marks an important contribution to the field of topographic map representations and that it has the potential to become a major reference for many years.

4 out of 5 stars A highly innovative but quite specialized angle!.......2000-03-22

For those familiar with the technology and terminology of Kohonen's self-organizing maps, this book is a highly recommendable asset. The insights on the deficiencies of various previously developed techniques and how to improve them are brilliant. Although the matter is presented in a very bottom-up fashion, it is sometimes hard to keep focusing on the big picture while all the different aspects are in-depth explored. This makes the book sometimes hard to understand. Although it was probably never intended to be easily understandable, this is the reason why I didn't give it the full 5 stars.

Book Description

An enterprise architecture tries to describe and control an organisation’s structure, processes, applications, systems and techniques in an integrated way. The unambiguous specification and description of components and their relationships in such an architecture requires a coherent architecture modelling language.

Lankhorst and his co-authors present such an enterprise modelling language that captures the complexity of architectural domains and their relations and allows the construction of integrated enterprise architecture models. They provide architects with concrete instruments that improve their architectural practice. As this is not enough, they additionally present techniques and heuristics for communicating with all relevant stakeholders about these architectures. Since an architecture model is useful not only for providing insight into the current or future situation but can also be used to evaluate the transition from ‘as-is’ to ‘to-be’, the authors also describe analysis methods for assessing both the qualitative impact of changes to an architecture and the quantitative aspects of architectures, such as performance and cost issues.

The modelling language and the other techniques presented have been proven in practice in many real-life case studies. So this book is an ideal companion for enterprise IT or business architects in industry as well as for computer or management science students studying the field of enterprise architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Modelling Approach.......2007-01-19

This is first in its kind book that tackles enterprise architecture modeling with a holistic approach. Book presents a unified modeling approach for enterprise architecture and simplifies the relationship between architecture domains with a simple Meta model. It also deals with communication and analysis aspect nicely.

This does not provide any details about what architecture development process should be nor it gives any insight on choosing an architecture framework. So set your expectation before buying. AS book title says it is about modeling, communication and Analysis.

    Book Description

Building on his pioneering work on the management of technology and innovation in his first book, Managing the Flow of Technology, Thomas J. Allen of MIT has joined with award-winning German architect Gunter Henn of HENN Architekten to produce a book that explores the combined use of two management tools to make the innovation process most effective: organizational structure and physical space. They present research demonstrating how organizational structure and physical space each affect communication among peoplein this case, engineers, scientists, and others in technical organizationsand they illustrate how organizations can transform both to increase the transfer of technical knowledge and maximize the communication for inspiration that is central to the innovation process. Allen and Henn illustrate their points with discussions of well-known buildings around the world, including Audis corporate headquarters, Steelcases corporate design center, and the Corning Glass Becker building, as well as several of Gunter Henns own projects, including the Skoda automotive factory in the Czech Republic and the Faculty for Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich. Allen and Henn then demonstrate the principles developed in their work by discussing in detail one example in which organizational structure and physical space were combined successfully to promote innovation with impressive results: HENN Architektens Project House for the BMW Group Research and Innovation Centre in Munich, cited by Business Week (April 24, 2006) in naming BMW one of the worlds most innovative companies.

Professor Thomas Allen is the originator of the Allen curve. In the late 1970s, Tom Allen undertook a project to determine how the distance between engineers offices coincided with the level of regular technical communication between them. The results of that research, now known as the Allen Curve, revealed a distinct correlation between distance and frequency of communication (i.e. the more distance there is between people 50 meters or more to be exact the less they will communicate). This principle has been incorporated into forward-thinking commercial design ever since, in, for example, The Decker Engineering Building in New York, the Steelcase Corporate Development Center in Michigan, and BMWs Research Center in Germany.

*Professor Allen of MIT is known worldwide for "the Allen curve" which is taught and cited in all management literature about innovation
*Gunter Henn is a renowned architect in Germany known for his innovative industrial building designs such as BMW projecthaus and the Skoda factory
*Shows in clear terms--based on actual research and implementation--how managers can organize the work, workers, and their physical space to maximize the potential for innovation

      Book Description

The emerging paradigm of collaborative networked organizations (CNOs), or simply collaborative networks, represents a dynamic and multidisciplinary research and development area for which a number of research results are available from many international and national projects. A large number of practical application experiments and pilot cases also provide evidence on what works and what still remains as a challenge for CNOs. The fast evolution of information and communication technologies and in particular the so-called Internet technologies, also represents an important motivator for the emergence of new forms of collaboration. There is, however, an urgent need to start more consolidated and holistic research strategies to support proper developments in this area.
This book includes a comprehensive set of recommendations from the multi-disciplines involved in CNOs, towards the establishment of a research agenda for emerging collaborative networks. These recommendations are the result of a 30-month initiative, the THINK creative project, involving more than 250 experts and visionaries from academia, research, and industry.
Collaborative Networked Organizations provides valuable elements for research strategy planners, decision-makers at research funding organizations, group leaders in research institutions, and heads of research departments in companies interested in research and innovative development activities in the area of e-business and collaborative networks. Furthermore, the book can also provide valuable direction to PhD advisors and PhD students to focus their research themes.

      5 out of 5 stars Packed with mind-expanding ideas.......2001-03-21

Speaking as a corporate communication professional, I can honestly say this is the most stimulating business book I've read. The premise is that organization leaders must go beyond simply seeking buy-in from their employees to a more iterative, interactive (and, ultimately, much more inspiring and effective) process of continually reinventing the organization. This argument is supported with great examples and enough detail to be actionable.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended........2000-12-29

Mary Boone has authored a wonderful resource for implementing a knowledge-sharing culture in the Enterprise. Things to pay special attention to in the book include the ten key competencies for mastering new methods of communication and management, her insightful analysis of trends and obstactles affecting corporate communication, and the way she uses interviews with CEOs and executives to show you how others have implemented effective collaborative strategies.

On the lighter side of things, read her story about "George" in the "Get Over Yourself" chapter. She uses this story to point out how personality differences can be a show stopper to implementing innovation and promoting creativity. Furthermore, she explains how collaborative technologies can help bypass some of these differences.

      3 out of 5 stars Computers/Internet coverage a disappointment.......2000-01-05

This review will seem unnecessarily critical, but I want to do what I can to help churches avoid wasting money -- there are too many folks with no scruples about charging a church whatever they will pay. I do some pro bono computer consulting for my parish (Trinity, Lime Rock, CT), and bought this book in hopes it would get me current with specific uses churches were making of the Internet. Sad to say, the book's coverage of computers and the Internet was minimal. The chapter entitled "Computers -- An Effective Tool in Ministry" covered pages 203 - 210 inclusive -- out of a total of 287 pages. Of these seven pages, two were glossary. Although I did like one metaphor -- "E-mail is the FAX machine of the '90s" -- and will probably use it elsewhere in my practice -- there was little other information of use to me. I noted a piece of misinformation. On page 204, the average cost to have a web site hosted was identified as $100 - $150 per month. Last evening, while looking for web hosting for a commercial client of mine, I found at least 50 companies who would host a site of some sophistication for $10 or less per month. Indeed, I found very few that charged more than $75 per month! I also noted the description of the church with its own server and eight modems (each with a phone line) to accomodate an on-line prayer circle. While this may have been both innovative and cost-effective when set up, the same functionality (on-line conferencing) is available today via any of the "Instant Messenger" services on the Internet for FREE -- no server, no modem pool, only the Internet connection for each participant. To move away from defects, I suspect this book will be of much use to people involved otherwise in church communications. Even the short chapter on computers may be of some use in introducing a non-computer-literate rector or pastor to computers and the Internet in a non-threatening context. But be aware: computer/Internet costs can be FAR lower than the book suggests. And, if you're already computer-literate and looking for specifics on how to apply computers and the Internet to communications in your parish, you can safely drop the price of this book in the collection plate instead of buying the book.

5 out of 5 stars It's filled with splendid ideas and suggestions........1999-08-04

Although this paperback has a modest price, its 300 pages add up to a valuable resource -- a pearl of great value -- for ministers, staff members, and other persons with varied leadership roles in local churches. The book shows how to develop an overall plan and provides ample examples of ways farsighted churches are communicating effectively with their members and ways they are reaching the unchurched. It gives solid advice on advertising, media relations, and use of websites, e-mail and other offspring of electronic technology. Contributing to the five-star quality of this book are its checklists and forms to keep track of progress.

          Book Description

Ability and skill are important, but they are not everything. Equally important is how you communicate yourself--your competencies and achievements--to others. Teacher and consultant Richard Picardi takes a long, thoughtful look at the things we all need to understand in order to allow our ideas to be heard and understood in today's noisy, hotly competitive organizations. He covers not just the skills of putting your ideas, recommendations, and analyses in writing, but also the other way in which effective communication is accomplished: nonverbally. He shows you the internal and external roadblocks to effective communication and how to break through them. In Part I, Picardi analyzes the nature of verbal and nonverbal communication. He shows how to recognize and remove internal and external barriers to effective communication and create messages that get the results you want. He then focuses on the specific goals of business communication, showing how the concept of change interacts with all forms of communication--in fact, how change is implicit in them. Picardi lays out the elements of organization that are essential in creating reader-based messages, then explains how to compose the clear, forceful sentences and paragraphs to express them. Later, in Part III, he presents his system of "text boxes," showing how to write typical business memos and letters, using direct and indirect patterns of writing to demonstrate different types of messages you want to communicate, and ends with a systematic method to revise and improve upon first drafts. He goes on to apply the principles of reader-based communication, effective organization, and clear expression to proposal and report writing. He shows how proposals differ from reports and how to write both effectively. For training and development specialists, the book provides the material you need to teach these skills to others.
