Book Description
Human Performance Measures Handbook was developed to help researchers and practitioners select measures to be used in the evaluation of human/machine systems and helps them seek better, more efficient and effective ways to characterize and measure the human element as part of the system. This book guides the reader through the critical process of selecting the appropriate measures of human performance and workload, and later provides specific examples of such. It begins with an overview of the steps involved in developing a test to measure human performance, workload, and/or situational awareness. This is followed by a definition of human performance and a review of human performance measures. Workload and situational awareness are similarly treated in subsequent chapters.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference.......2004-10-17
This handbook provides an extremely comprehensive review of hundreds of measures. Each review has a general description, strengths and limitations based on data, data collection requirements, thresholds of critical values that have been empirically tested, and references. Hundreds of reports and articles are referenced. The document has brevity, clarity, and integrity. There is no author's conjecture.
More of an Information Flea Market than a Handbook.......2003-11-25
This book was written to fill a definite need for applied human factors practitioners. Unfortunately, the frustrations outweigh the benefits. It does catalogue a number of measures, but fails to succeed in its aim. The text reads more like a stack of literature review notecards than a handbook or guide. At times, it hands out results without talking about what a given researcher was measuring or addressing. It is almost as if they published an expanded draft outline instead of the real book it was supposed to grow into.
It's title clearly states that it addresses Human Performance Measures. Liberally splashed in amongst the measures, however, are entry after entry of experimental tasks that present vague task results without talking about the measures used to determine those results. It does so without pointing out that these items are tasks, not measures. When it does address true measures, it offers no explanation of when that type of measure is appropriate, or even how to use it. Instead, in simple literature review fashion, it simply cites results of different journal articles.
This volume is completely hamstrung by the publisher formatting of the text. When you flip through the book, it appears to be a single, 188-page-long run-on paragraph. Reading a specific section reveals the same problem: headers and subheaders are barely (if at all) distinguishable from the text, which is of low to moderate value anyways.
It is a perfect example of an information flea market - There are a very few good bits of information in there, but you have to spend a whole lot of time digging around to find it. The topic was a great idea, but the execution was lacking. It just takes too much digging time for the potential payoff.
Book Description
Cognitive radio technology is a smarter, faster, and more efficient way to transmit information to and from fixed, mobile, other wireless communication devices. Cognitive radio builds upon software-defined radio technology. A cognitive radio system is 'aware' of its operating environment and automatically adjusts itself to maintain desired communicationsits like having a trained operator inside the radio making constant adjustments for maximum performance. Operating frequency, power output, antenna orientation/beamwidth, modulation, and transmitter bandwidth are just a few of the operating parameters that can automatically be adjusted on the fly in a cognitive radio system.
Fette has constructed a cutting-edge volume that hits all of the important issues including research, management, and support. Cognitive techniques will be discussed such as position and network awareness, infrastructure and physical and link layer concerns. Though still a nascent technology, cognitive radio is being pushed by the US military and for mission-critical civilian communications (such as emergency and public safety services).
*The first book on a revolutionary technology that will be critical to military, emergency, and public safety communications
*A multi-contributed volume written by the leaders in this exciting new area
*Describes the location-determination capabilities of cognitive radio (the precise location of all units in a cognitive radio network can be determined in real time)
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Introduction to the New Ways in Radio Communications.......2007-01-05
It is a great pleasure and honor to write the review for the book by Fette. I am a communication engineer who practiced and taught communication systems for the last 34 years. It is heartening to see the progress in radio communication as this has changed the life style of people at large. From analog to digital to programmable to software defined and now to intelligent (cognitive) radio design we are feeling the future changes as to how people might use the radio technologies in the next 25 years. By studing this book from Fette one can easily guess where radio technologies will be heading. This book, and "Cognitive Radio Architecture" by J. Mitola, have come almost at the same time. While this book provides a general and more technological overview of various aspects of Cognitive radio, the book by J. Mitola gives specific architectural overview of the future radio. I feel both the books are must for those interested in studying and researching in the field of Radio Design both for commercial and military applications. My conclusion is that for Fifth Generation Cellular Radio these are the books to start with. Complimented by the research Articles (e.g. IEEE papaers) one can correctly find the way to radio development. I first congratulate Joseph Mitola for providing the lead in Software Defined/Cognitive radio concepts, and then appreciate the writer Fette for providing an excellent description of Cognitive radio with provision of connection to Software Defoined radio.
I am prticularly interested in Learning Strategies which modify the knowledgebase for making good decision to provide desired QoS in mobile communication systems (environment).
My congratualtions to both J. Mitola and Fette as they have given us the timely information on the subject.
Thank you.

It covers classic methods of optimization, including dynamic programming, the simplex method, and gradient techniques, as well as recent innovations such as simulated annealing, tabu search, and evolutionary computation. Integrated into the discourse is a series of problems and puzzles to challenge the reader. The book is written in a lively, engaging style and is intended for students and practitioners alike. Anyone who reads and understands the material in the book will be armed with the most powerful problem solving tools currently known.
Customer Reviews:
Kind of old stuffs.......2007-09-23
The material is alright but it is just kind of old. I can not tell from the original description otherwise, I will
not have bought it.
Optimization Mini-Library.......2007-02-20
This is the best book I have in my optimization library. It is excellent for students and teachers as well. It introduces you to optimization using a simple language, practical examples explained in a very didactical manner. It surveys optimization techniques and categorizes it in a very well-arranged and simplified format. You wouldn't have to read tens of pages with unsightly symbols, messed with subscripts and superscripts to understand a single optimization technique.
It also brings an uplifting introduction to the concept of problem solving. I highly recommend this book to Optimization and Mathematics students and teachers.
Read the book, once you are done, look at the table of contents and give a five minutes lecture on each single title and subtitle, which is what you will be capable of doing at the end.
It's not the technique, it's the logic behind it.......2006-07-24
Most evolutionary computation or math books deal with the techniques of solving problems. This book teachs you how to think of a solution for the problem you face, and not what problems are appropriate for the technique in hand.
The logic is that when you do a craft work, you do pick the appropriate tool from your tools box, but you don't grasp a tool and then find a job to go with it, which is the case when you can only handle this tool.
improve your problem solving ability.......2006-02-20
The authors have updated their successful first edition, though the latter, printed in 99, was scarcely obsolete. A heuristic can be basically a rule of thumb, dressed up in fancier language. What the authors intend is for you to develop an intuition about when to use modern algorithms. Where is almost every case, these are actually implemented on a computer; a reflection of the cheap availability of computing power to most readers.
The book is a good complement to various standard algorithm texts, like those by Sedgewick, Aho and Knuth. You can consider this book as standing a level above those. [Though Knuth's books also do an excellent job of suggesting when to use or modify algorithms. ]
The level of discussion here is not of a strict, heavy mathematical approach. It can be read as informal guidelines, that discuss the gist of such ideas as simulated annealing and evolutionary methods. There is a wide range of example problems, to motivate you in understanding what might be used to solve them.
get this book!, read it!, understand it! :).......2006-01-01
i have not finished reading this book, but it's 'worth it' if only for the first two chapters! :) anyone interested in dynamical systems (control aspects), general problem solving, AI, and human thinking should read and understand this book! :) work the problems! :) think! enjoy! :)

Book Description
The commonly used terms, "unmanned" or "uninhabited," are misleading in the context of remotely operated vehicles. In the case of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), there are many people involved on the ground ranging from those operating the vehicle from a ground control station, to the people coordinating multiple UAVs in an air operations or air traffic control center.
The complexity of remote vehicle operations is also often underestimated and seen as a simple navigation task, neglecting the more complex functions associated with remote camera operations, data gathering, and even weapons activity. In addition, trends in the military and civilian sectors involving reduced staffing, increased number of vehicles to control, and integration with other operations are associated with critical human factors issues. For example, the integration of UAVs with manned aircraft in the national airspace poses numerous human factors challenges.
In summary, though these vehicles may be unmanned they are not unoperated, unsupervised, or uncontrolled. The role of the human in these systems is critical and raises a number of human factors research and design issues ranging from multiple vehicle control and adaptive automation to spatial disorientation and synthetic vision.
The purpose of this book is to highlight the pressing human factors issues associated with remotely operated vehicles and to showcase some of the state of the art human-oriented research and design that speaks to these issues. In this book the human components of the "unmanned" system take center stage compared to the vehicle technology that often captures immediate attention.

Book Description
A variety of ideas, approaches, and techniques exist -- in terms of both architecture and learning -- and this abundance seems to lead to many exciting possibilities in terms of theoretical advances and application potentials. Despite the apparent diversity, there is clearly an underlying unifying theme: architectures that bring together symbolic and connectionist models to achieve a synthesis and synergy of the two different paradigms, and the learning and knowledge acquisition methods for developing such architectures. More effort needs to be extended to exploit the possibilities and opportunities in this area.
This book is the outgrowth of The IJCAI Workshop on Connectionist-Symbolic Integration: From Unified to Hybrid Approaches, held in conjunction with the fourteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI '95). Featuring various presentations and discussions, this two-day workshop brought to light many new ideas, controversies, and syntheses which lead to the present volume.
This book is concerned with the development, analysis, and application of hybrid connectionist-symbolic models in artificial intelligence and cognitive science. Drawing contributions from a large international group of experts, it describes and compares a variety of models in this area. The types of models discussed cover a wide range of the evolving spectrum of hybrid models, thus serving as a well-balanced progress report on the state of the art. As such, this volume provides an information clearinghouse for various proposed approaches and models that share the common belief that connectionist and symbolic models can be usefully combined and integrated, and such integration may lead to significant advances in understanding intelligence.

Book Description
This is an important thorough book. Guy Boy has presented a masterful review and synthesis of the many factors that affect how people and technology interact in the performance of a task, an understanding that is essential for those who design technology. I strongly recommend it for both students and professionals. -Donald A. Norman, Hewlett-Packard; author of The Invisible Computer "If it is, as I have claimed that AI systems of the future will be less about artificial' intelligence and more about augmented' intelligence, Dr. Boy has produced a veritable handbook on the design of these cognitive prostheses. So sit down, relax, put on your ocular prosthesis and enjoy the read." -Ken Ford, Associate Director, NASA Ames Research Center "This book is a significant first step towards making human-centered design a reality. It provides orientation and guidance for everyone who is concerned with developing systems that integrate people and computers in a context that provides functionality, reliability, flexibility, and responsibility." -Terry Winograd, Professor, Stanford University
Book Description
Our fascination with new technologies is based on the assumption that more powerful automation will overcome human limitations and make our systems 'faster, better, cheaper,' resulting in simple, easy tasks for people. But how does new technology and more powerful automation change our work? Research in Cognitive Systems Engineering (CSE) looks at the intersection of people, technology, and work. What it has found is not stories of simplification through more automation, but stories of complexity and adaptation. When work changed through new technology, practitioners had to cope with new complexities and tighter constraints. They adapted their strategies and the artifacts to work around difficulties and accomplish their goals as responsible agents. The surprise was that new powers had transformed work, creating new roles, new decisions, and new vulnerabilities. Ironically, more autonomous machines have created the requirement for more sophisticated forms of coordination across people, and across people and machines, to adapt to new demands and pressures. This book synthesizes these emergent Patterns though stories about coordination and mis-coordination, resilience and brittleness, affordance and clumsiness in a variety of settings, from a hospital intensive care unit, to a nuclear power control room, to a space shuttle control center. The stories reveal how new demands make work difficult, how people at work adapt but get trapped by complexity, and how people at a distance from work oversimplify their perceptions of the complexities, squeezing practitioners. The authors explore how CSE observes at the intersection of people, technology, and work, how CSE abstracts patterns behind the surface details and wide variations, and how CSE discovers promising new directions to help people cope with complexities. The stories of CSE show that one key to well-adapted work is the ability to be prepared to be surprised. Are you ready?
Customer Reviews:
Provides the Basic Theories.......2005-04-18
There has always been an interface between man and machine. In the earliest cave man days it was learned that fastening a rock to the end of a stick made a club, or if sharpened an axe. But it is only in the 1900's that the man machine interface began to be really complex. And it was only in the late 1900's that serious work began on how best to handle this interface.
This book was written by pioneers in the field and offers a principled approach to studying human work with complex technology. It describes a conceptual framework for analysis and concrete methods for the design of man machine interfaces where the amount of information to be transfered between man and machine can be analyzed and structured for its best effect.
This book takes a rather theoretical approach to the problem giving few concrete examples. It seems destined to become a clasic in the field.

Book Description
The growing dependence of working environments on complex technology has created many challenges and lead to a large number of accidents. Although the quality of organization and management within the work environment plays an important role in these accidents, the significance of individual human action (as a direct cause and as a mitigating factor) is undeniable. This has created a need for new, integrated approaches to accident analysis and risk assessment.
This book detailing the use of CREAM is, therefore, both timely and useful.
It presents an error taxonomy which integrates individual, technological and organizational factors based on cognitive engineering principles. In addition to the necessary theoretical foundation, it provides a step-by-step description of how the taxonomy can be applied to analyse as well as predict performance using a context-dependent cognitive model.
CREAM can be used as a second-generation human reliability analysis (HRA) approach in probabilistic safety assessment (PSA), as a stand-alone method for accident analysis and as part of a larger design method for interactive systems. In particular, the use of CREAM will enable system designers and risk analysts to:
• identify tasks that require human cognition and therefore depend on cognitive reliability
• determine the conditions where cognitive reliability and ensuing risk may be reduced
• provide an appraisal of the consequences of human performance on system safety which can be used in PSA.

Book Description
This book describes the vast opportunity created by unifying science and integrating technology, and recommends transforming ideas for individuals and society. We stand at the threshold of a new renaissance in knowledge based on the structure and behavior of matter from the nanoscale up to the most complex system yet discovered, the human brain. Unification of science based on unity in nature and its holistic investigation will lead to technological convergence and a more efficient societal structure for reaching human goals. In the early decades of the twenty-first century, concentrated effort can bring together nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and new humane technologies based in cognitive science. With proper attention to ethical issues and societal needs, rapid advances in convergent technologies have the potential to enhance both human performance and productivity. Examples of payoffs will include improving work efficiency and learning, enhancing individual sensory and cognitive capabilities, revolutionary changes in healthcare, improving both individual and group efficiency, highly effective communication techniques including brain to brain interaction, perfecting human-machine interfaces, enhancing human capabilities for defense purposes, reaching sustainable development using NBIC tools, and ameliorating the physical and cognitive decline that is common to the aging mind.
This is the first book addressing the convergence of technologies in coherence with social sciences, with a focus on people. Science and technology will increasingly dominate the world, as population, resource exploitation, and potential social conflict grow. Therefore, the success of this convergent technologies priority area is seen as crucial to the future of humanity.
