Book Description
'Destined to be a classic work on the topic, Enterprise Security Architecture fills a real void in the knowledge base of our industry. In a comprehensive, detailed treatment, Sherwood, Clark and Lynas rightly emphasize the business approach and show how
Security is too important to be left in the hands of just one department or employee -- it's a concern of an entire enterprise. Enterprise Security Architecture shows that having a comprehensive plan requires more than the purchase of security software -- it requires a framework for developing and maintaining a system that is proactive.

Step by step professional.......2007-01-15
It is amazing how different books can be. I read dozens of information security management related books, but this one is only I can use in my everyday job. If you are consultant or professional CISO, this book offers tips of how to do things right and how to be efficient. It is information security management bible. Buy hardcover version because you will use it every day.
Really helpful for enterprise securty. Not a techie cookbook........2006-02-21
This is a particularly interesting book in that it proposes an approach to developing security architectures that are aligned with Business Needs. Most of the other literature that I have seen in this field seems to throw itself into technical detail and try to be a "cookbook" for techies.
The book is in two distinct parts - this first outlines the philosophy and approach of SABSA (Sherwood Applied Security Architecture) and the second draws on the authors' considerable experience in using SABSA in real-life scenarios, giving a set of "standard" services and mechanisms that should be considered when building an Enterprise Security Architecture.
If you are looking just to do techie "black box" security engineering with routers and servers then this book is not really for you. This is a book for those with a responsibility for enterprises where security can be seen as enabling the business rather than fighting it.
Like others with whom I have spoken, I liked the "quick notes" in the left hand column of every page that let's you speed read each chapter. They made it really easy to set a good insight into the subject quickly and focus on the areas that I really wanted to know more about.
One hidden gem in this book is the approach to Measuring Return on investment in security - it opened my eyes to using security as a business enabler.
Book Description
The latest edition of Curt White's top-selling text maintains a balanced approach between the technical and the practical aspects of data communications, providing a solid understanding not only of how things work, but how they can be applied to create business solutions. Updated to reflect new technologies, this text covers current concepts such as voice over wireless LAN, convergence, MPLS, and PPP, while maintaining the pedagogical elements that have been successful for students in the past.

Great deal!.......2007-08-27
Great deal! Fast shipping! This item was in better than expected condition! Will buy from again!
Great book that provides all I need.......2006-12-23
I used this textbook for TDC course at DePaul.
It was really helpful and useful especially for newbie.
Plus the details are not too general.
I actually learned something..........2006-11-14
This book laid out as much information as possible without cluttering the pages with filler. There were several real-world examples, and the helpful diagrams really put the words into action. Now, there's any humor in this book, so don't expect to be entertained. And there's a lot of information in this book. I mean a lot. But if you actually want to learn something about networking and data communications, you won't be disappointed.
Integrating Technology and Management.......2003-10-06
I have been using this book for two years to teach a senior level management class how technology is used in today's business. As most of instructors would agree, it is sometimes (or always) difficult to draw management students' interest in technical issues. If you use this book, that wouldn't be a problem at all. Supporting the topics in the book by some case studies from contemporary business would even make your course indispensable.

Easy to read and understand.......2003-02-06
I used this book for an internet class so i ended up reading the entire book from chapter one to the end. It was a little boring at times, but it made it easy to understand the material and the diagrams were great. The only annoying thing was how in the first few chapters it kept saying what was beyond the scope of the book and what chapter you will be studying what and when. Stick to the material.

Good overview of how systems work.......2004-05-23
I was looking for a book that described in depth how the various cycles (e.g., Revenue Cycle) worked in conjunction with the various tables. Does an outstanding job with in-depth details where you not only learn the steps, but how the system is updated at each stage. Good material on controls, especially application controls that need to be built into the system. Normally I never look at case studies and assignments, but in this book, they were useful.
Book Description
Enterprise Information Systems: A Pattern Based Approach, 3e, by Dunn/Cherrington/Hollander presents a pattern-based approach to designing enterprise information systems with a particular emphasis on the enterprise-wide database. This edition is built on the idea that a separation between accounting information systems and management information systems should not exist. We believe patterns help people see the "big picture" of enterprises more clearly and therefore help design better systems. We believe you cannot identify anything that we need to account for that we do not also need to manage; nor can we identify anything we need to manage that we do not also need to account for. In this edition, we will show how a well-designed REA-based Accounting Information System is the Enterprise Information System.

Worst_book.......2006-06-06
This book starts off with naive examples to illustrate the point. The illustrations were so childy that make it so rudiculous to read and understand it. Later in the book, the explanations get complicated and vague which confuses readers. Some chapters are more than 50 pages long and after you have read it, you will be more confuse than ever.I am a student and need to read a lot of books. This is by far the worst book I have ever read.
Confusing Content.......2006-01-23
This book is not well organized, the content is confusing and messed up, for a student the book talked too much on virtual and vague concept with out well explained , on the other hand the verbose description some times make you thinking, : " WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?"
Neither fish nor fowl.......2005-01-05
I was a student in a college course that used this textbook. I'm happy that I earned the credits for it but not much else. This is a dismal textbook, plain and simple. It starts in chapter 1 where the authors engage in a lofty praise of reengineering. The fact that many reengineering projects did not accomplish the desired results does not even get mentioned by the authors. So much for their research! The rest of the book chiefly focuses on the description of a database based upon the various business processes. The examples show a very complex database. However, the information provided in the book would not be sufficient to design a similar one from scratch. Overall, this book focuses way too much on an academic view of business with little relation to the real world.
Book Description
The Advanced Planner and Optimiser (APO) is the software from SAP dedicated to supply chain management. This book provides an overview about the supported SCM processes and explains how to implement APO in a company. It is written from a long years' experience in implementation projects and provides project managers and team members with the necessary know-how for a successful implementation project. The focus of the book is on introducing modelling approaches and explaining the structure and interdependencies of systems, modules and entities of APO based on the release mySAP SCM 4.1. Another concern is the integration with R/3, both technically and from a process point of view. Since APO projects differ significantly from other SAP projects, some key issues and common mistakes concerning project management are mentioned as well.

APO Concepts.......2007-01-25
It's the best book about APO I've ever read. For people that already have an idea of APO principles, it's a mix of technical and practical concepts. I recommend.
Good Overview of APO.......2006-08-24
Very useful information on APO. I have been an APO consultant for several years, and its a good source of information. Lots of information that is not readily available or known without searching for it. Recommended.

Book Description
Performance of Computer Communication Systems A Model-Based Approach Boudewijn R. Haverkort Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, Germany Computer communication systems and distributed systems are now able to provide an increasing range of services. As the timing requirements in the operation of these services are becoming crucial for the global community. performance assessment and selection of communication and distributed systems are, therefore, becoming more important. In this book, the author illustrates the techniques and methods used to evaluate the performance of computer communication systems, thereby covering all aspects of model-based performance evaluation. Unlike other books on this topic, there is no restriction to a particular performance evaluation technique. Notable features in this book include:
* coverage of all major techniques of performance evaluation
* non-mathematical problem solving approach, explaining and illustrating performance evaluation techniques
* assessment techniques for stochastic processes, single server queues, networks of queues and stochastic Petri nets
* numerous application studies, including token ring systems, client-server systems, and wide-area networks
* substantial number of practical exercises and examples.
For computer or electrical engineers who design and implement computer communication systems, this book provides an excellent overview of the methods and techniques used to construct and solve performance models. It is also a valuable source of information for postgraduate students in computer science and related subjects. Visit Our Web Page! http://www.wiley.com/
Customer Reviews:
Probably the best modeling book around!.......2007-01-22
I consider this book a lucky find. As you can probably guess, I have nearly every book remotely related to computer performance modeling, which you'll see if you look at my guide to building a web site that doesn't frustrate customers. But for some reason, I didn't have this one. When I did get a copy, it quickly became one of my favorites!
The book starts with a good foundation in stochastic processes (Part I) and single-server queuing models (Part II). The highlight of the second part is chapter 8 on phase-type distributions, quasi-birth-death processes and matrix geometric methods. I have not found much on this approach elsewhere that's accessible to a practitioner, so if you, like me, have a large collection and are looking for a reason to add this book, here's one!
Part III covers queuing networks. There isn't much here you won't find in other books, although it's explained in more detail and covers more of the history of the subject than many of the basic books. Few of today's books go beyond mean value analysis for closed networks, for example; it's very rare that the convolution algorithm is even mentioned.
Part IV covers stochastic Petri net models. Most of this, except for chapter 17 on infinite state stochastic Petri nets, is available in other books. But, like chapter 8, you won't find the material in chapter 17 in an accessible form anywhere else. And a number of the other books on stochastic Petri nets have gone out of print. So chapter 17 is reason two to add this one to a collection.
Part V consists of one chapter on simulation. I personally think simulation has gotten way too much bad press. Analytical modeling proponents are fond of whining about how long it takes to build simulation models, how long it takes to run them, etc. I don't personally do simulation, but there are numerous situations where it's the "right thing to do".
In summary, I think this is currently the best advanced modeling book available. If you want to go beyond mean value analysis, get this one. It covers stochastic processes, single queues, queuing networks, stochastic Petri nets and simulation.

not 400+ pages.......2005-11-06
I just recieved the book, and it appears to be what I was looking for, but on Amazon.com it is listed as being over 400 pages. The book is only 335 pages with the last 100 pages being an appendix, glossary of terms, and an index. For the price of the book, the correct number of pages should be correct.

Book Description
The importance of hospital information systems (HIS) is unquestionable: they are an integral tool in facilitating the management of a hospital's medical and administrative information, thereby improving the quality of health care. Drs. Van de Velde and Degoulet's book, Clinical Information Systems: A Component-Based Approach, will detail the many components involved in the implementation of HIS. The book will feature several case studies from North America and Europe that serve to illustrate these components. The book will detail the extension of HIS to multi-site environments, which are implemented in an effort to better serve the public. Such extended networks are called community health information systems (CHIS) or networks (CHIN). Clinical information systems (CIS) is used in the direct management of the patient, and this book focuses on the implementation of an integrated and comprehensive CIS. Designed for use by all healthcare professionals, the book's chapter highlights include: Introduction: The Evolution of Health Information Systems; Frameworks: A Collection of Business Objects; The Patient Component; The Medical Record Component; The Knowledge Component; The Resource Management Component; The Security Component; and Imaging Management and Integration. The addition of case studies illustrates the role of these components, and a Glossary provides invaluable definitions for the reader's easy reference.
Customer Reviews:
Apparently, a classic text............2007-07-01
But I thought it was boring & not all that informative. I struggled through it because I was taking a class on CIS. Surely, there's something better out there.
Not worth the money.......2007-01-24
For a book titled Clinical Information Systems, you would think that would be the contents. Unfortunately it is not. Old re-hashed arguments about CPOE, a non-informative review of security, a little touch of imaging IT and that's about it. Nary a mention of clinical systems such as laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, clinical documentation, etc. A rather disappointing product. I have serious reservations about the rest of the texts from this publisher after reading this publication.
