David has written an excellent data quality book. He focuses on a real works around data quality. He presents a practical approaches how to solve a different types of quality defects and also pointed out main quality principles. But reader must think how to apply mentioned principles and approaches in reader's organization.

Simply, good reading with application on a real cases.

5 out of 5 stars David Loshin's book and quality improvement of New Zealand National Health Information.......2005-09-21

At the time the book was published I worked as a data quality manager at the New Zealand Ministry of Health focusing on the implementation of the Data Quality Strategy for National Health Databases. It was a great help for us. We've implemented many of David Loshin's principles. Most importantly it helped us to understand that the majority of our DQ problems were not due to the poor data management processes, but because of the inadequate system's design or poor data model, which was either conceptually or contextually incorrect, incomplete or inaccurate.

5 out of 5 stars Its all in the Details.......2003-09-14

Most of the literature on Data Quality focuses on the challenges of creating and maintaining a data warehouse. Thankfully, for those of us trying to improve the integrity of the information in our OLTP databases, this book presents a methodology which is not specific to any one data environment.

This book is packed with lists of cases to consider for each step of the methodology. Each case is nicely documented. Actually, much of the book is taken filled with the documentation for each case, which may cause a person to lose sight of the methodology that is being presented.

I am person who prefers to learn concepts. I am not as interested in memorizing details. Hence, I would read this book, skipping most of the documentation in the lists, instead focusing on understanding the methodology. Thereafter, I would use this book as a reference when needing information on a particular step of the methodology.

5 out of 5 stars Data Quality in the Real World.......2003-02-06

As a data warehouse practitioner for over 12 years, I was recently challenged at my current employer to help assemble a global data quality team and process. Having done much of the work before on a piecemeal basis, we made steady progress.

When I received my copy of "Enterprise Knowledge Management," I found two important things:
1. We were definitely on the right track, and
2. There were some things we had missed.

David Loshin has put together an excellent field guide to all aspects of data quality. It is very easy to understand, and contains practical, effective suggestions. Most importantly, it is a true "soup to nuts" guide to data quality. There is very little that you might need to improve your company's "knowledge quotient" that you will not find here.

I have heartily recommended this book to a number of people when asked about data warehousing and data quality. You'll not find a better handbook anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Management review.......2002-02-26

While I am not a technical person, this booked helped me enormously to understand the management issues that surround data quality. In today's world, I am shocked that more companies are not using this approach to save massive sums of money. This book has given me the tools to do so within my company. I highly recommend it!

Product Description

Inside Knowledge: Rediscovering the Source of Performance Improvement weaves a suspenseful tale of how several employees working in the fictional Grand Bay company discover how to leverage their knowledge to radically improve performance. Knowledge is often the most reliable sources of sustainable competitive advantage for companies, yet, until now, it has been very difficult to translate employee knowledge into performance improvements. Inside knowledge and pragmatic knowledge are the missing links that make the connection between employee experience and a firm’s ability to gain a competitive edge. Pragmatic knowledge results from continuous experimentation to enables employees to discover new ways to view their work and to improve performance, and is the result of the collaboration of both types of operational employees – workers and managers. Their interactions focus on discovering what works best in practice, and this refines the knowledge that drives performance improvement. This is not simply a theoretical approach, since successful companies such as Toyota have demonstrated that inside knowledge is a vital component to driving organizational innovations. Inside Knowledge offers seven pragmatic principles that allow any person working in any kind of organization to create and continuously improve knowledge for improving performance.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone in Business!.......2006-07-27

Inside Knowledge is a fantastic presentation of real world processes and creative resolution to many business concerns enfolded into a very entertaining story. The fiction holds your attention while conveying brilliant ideas useful to professionals at all levels of management and in nearly any industry. Worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Inside Knowledge.......2006-07-20

As a senior operations professional and practitioner for over 20 years, I found this book to accurately portray the interrelation and organizational challenges that companies grope with on a continual basis, and yet provide the tenets to foster collaborative best practices in an interdisciplinary environment. It is richly humorous and straight to the point. Written in a fictitious manufacturing setting, the authors provide incredible connectivity across their main characters and a compelling story of leadership and management to exemplify their points and hypotheses, wise sages they are indeed. A very poignant look at management innovation, and lessons for furthering it. A must read for anyone intent on unlocking the true value of their enterprise by leveraging the knowledge, synergies, and functional dynamics of their organizational assets.

5 out of 5 stars Inside Knowledge.......2006-07-18

This book should be read by entry level to experienced business professionals who seek to assist their company in overcoming challenging situations through the use of knowledge management. "Inside Knowledge" is a useful guide for how to achieve employee peformance improvement & customer service oriented goals because it clearly explains how theoretical knowledge differs from pragmatic and profound knowledge and why theoretical knowledge does not best serve us in the workplace. One of the aspects I liked best in the book was how it unified owners, managers, and employees with concise approaches for how to get key players to work toward a common goal. The lessons provided by Fearon & Cavaleri are not only excellent business lessons, but also great lesons to be learned & applied to daily life.

5 out of 5 stars Theory and Application.......2006-07-14

An easily read description of the idea fostering a learning organization. Not only that, but a nail bitting story that demostrates how continuous improvenent through practical learning and experimenting can unfold. I would recomment the book to anyone who has faced a complacent workplace.

3 out of 5 stars Review of The Think Factory.......2007-05-02

I thought that the book was useful in that it laid out a strategy for how to use technology to create a competitive advantage. It offered solutions for how to measure the various outputs of information work and it kept the information worker in the loop as far as the types of technologies implemented which I thought was important. It also created a plan based on measurable facts for how to decide which projects to invest to bring the most benefit to the information worker. I was impressed by the detailed (almost step by step) formula for how to create Productivity Impact Framework (PIF) and the use of realistic case studies to further describe implementation. It was a little heavy on the acronyms and somewhat confusing when it came to adding Lean Six Sigma (LSS) to the PIF but overall was well written. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in an effective way to choose and implement a successful IT project.

5 out of 5 stars Focus First on Knowledge and Data to Avoid IT Stalls.......1999-06-24

IT has often had it backwards, such as when companies seek to automate what already adds little value. If the data are degraded in the process, you fall back instead of forward. The downside risk is real, as is the upside opportunity. While many books talk in abstraction about knowledge management, this book provides a practical process that will vastly improve IT effectiveness. IT managers should read this first, as should their clients. I hope that this book will be but the beginning of an emphasis on first dealing with the problem, then looking for the right way to deliver and use the data while protecting them, then look at the software and hardware choices. I look forward to future books that provide even more examples of what can go right and wrong with the knowledge and data. This is the way that best practices should be spelled out. I also look forward to seeing how best practices will evolve in this field into future best practices. There is a lot of room for improvement.

This book presents the readers with an objective and scientific description of IQ (information quality) and a systematic way of measuring, analyzing and improving IQ. It is valuable for enterprise IQ personnels to read this book before fulfiling DQM (Data Quality Management) tasks.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the subject........1999-06-09

This the best book on the subject of data and information quality! The authors have provided us we the means to implement a practical and simple way to achieve data and information quality with the notion that data are products. The emphasis of IT is shifted towards supporting the production of data and information products. Data and information as products, also encourages interactions with consumers of these products. The authors illustrate the importance of this with long chapters devoted to consumers surveys about information timeliness, packaging, content, meaning, and packaging. My organization was fortunate enough to have Dr. Wang offer a seminar based on his book. In the seminar, Dr. Wang emphasised the importance of data and information as products whose quality ia judged by access, interpretation, content, and timeliness. The depth of knowledge and pratical use of basic quality principles to achieve consumenr satisfaction is well demonstrated by Dr. Wang and his co-authors. As all of us must live in a world where data, information and knowledge are commodities of trade, this book is a necessary guide for success.

        Book Description

Twelve steps for converting feedback into bottom line improvements This book presents an innovative and radically logical way of thinking about organizational knowledge and competition that centers on discipline, integration and focus. By tapping into the previously unrealized strengths that lie in all companies, the author suggests that it is possible for companies to move beyond informational chaos to create focused and enticing new opportunities. The 12 step method presented in the first five chapters show you how to take information from feedback from assessments, surveys and audits, convert it into usable knowledge and get bottom line improvements. The strategy expands the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) model into a Plan-Do-Knowledge-Act (PDKA) process. The case studies provided reinforce the principles and the theory behind them. Significant challenges face any organization intent on becoming world-class by managing knowledge effectively. They can be classified into four types: making use of your information by integrating it, organizing the different forms of information into a manageable framework, focusing equal attention on your strengths and your weaknesses, developing decision-making criteria based on key company drivers. The12 steps outlined in Knowledge-Driven Profit Improvement: Implementing Assessment Feedback Using PDK Action Theory will show you how to make your company into a world-class organization.

          Book Description

What makes information useful? This seemingly simple and yet intriguing and complicated question is discussed in this book. It examines ways in which the quality of information can be improved in knowledge-intensive processes (such as on-line communication, strategy, product development, or consulting). The book proposes a conceptual framework to manage information quality for knowledge-based content, presenting four proven principles to apply the framework to a variety of information products. Five in-depth company case studies show how information quality can be managed systematically in order to increase the satisfaction of knowledge workers and information consumers. The book uses frequent diagrams and tables, as well as diagnostic questions and summary boxes to make its content actionable.
