Solid publication for DSS & IT Theory--Great research tool!.......2005-10-25
Not everyone will find this book as extremely useful as I did. The information contained within can be intimidating because of the sheer volume packed into its over 900 pages, but for someone wanting a foundation of Decision-support theory, this book should fulfill your need.
Each chapter provides an overview and a list of learning objectives that are adequately covered in greater detail. While theory lessons provide a necessary base for most students, this book successfully ties a "real-world" example to each chapter lesson that is not only relevant, but also includes associated links should the reader require more detail.
The book layout is fairly consistent with the more recent IT textbook publications that provide information with a short shelf-life (technological improvements being what they are today), but the illustrated concepts should be useful until the next revision is published.
The authors provide a wealth of references that are extremely useful for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge on any particular section or detail in the book. This provides a necessary trail for any research project.
The companion website (publisher) provides power point presentations that outline each chapter that were found useful for classroom utilization, however, a few details such as adding notes pages would have been greatly appreciated. Essentially, the material covered by these presentations proved more than adequate, although sometimes requiring a little digging in the textbook to provide enough detail (which I believe was the intent).
All in all this was an excellent book and a great research tool for anyone pursuing an education in IT.
Rambling book.......2005-10-18
This book could get away with about 2/3 the volume of content still be interesting. There really does not seem to be any structure to the way a chapter flows. Its easy to skim, but difficult to read.
Good case studies;
The connection with the web is a little over-emphasized and sometimes unclear. I'd prefer a dense read, with some concise messages.
This is a good course text, not a favorite though.
Purpose of the book: separate you from your money???.......2005-09-21
As far as I can tell the prupose of this book is to separate you from a great deal of your money!
It has a great deal to say about nothing. There is very little substantive detail on anything! Which, given it's size, really is quite amazing! This book will not teach you how to concretely implement any decision support system. It waffles on at a very distant level about such systems but never gets down in the trenches, if you know what I mean. It's basically why (though only just) rather than how! And for me, that makes this book a very pricey door jam.
Seriously, I was really underwhelmed and disappointed by the book. I ended up buying Statistics, Data Analysis and Decision Modeling by Evens and Olson (isbn: 0130783838) to find the information and practice that I need (decision modeling rather than decision support systems per se). It also comes with phstat software which is a VERY useful excel statistical add-in.
For example, from this book, p681-685 is genetic algorithms -> in 5 Pages!!!!! with nothing substantive about recombination, crossover, mutation, fitness or anythign like that (the terms are mentioned but not explained)...all it does is refer you sompleace else! Fuzzy logic gets 4 pages...with no implementation details. That is seriously ordinary!
So I suggest you save your money and look at something else. SOmehow I don't see this book giving anybody too much joy. It amazes me it has lasted through 7 edition. If the 7th is this bad...I'd hate to see the first edition!!! So, as I said before, more a book about why and where to go to get knowledge of how to do rather than giving you the know-how. SO look for a book on how! This is a book for discovering that terms like knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) actually exist...and maybe what it means (like say webopedia) but certainly not how to do it...
Excellent reference, thick college text.......2005-02-07
This is a textbook appropriate for a college-level course at the upper division or graduate level. It gives very thorough coverage of the entire field in one book, and most students really like the book in satisfaction questionnaires, but some feel overwhelmed until after the material is covered in class. I focus on specific chapters or sections of chapters for a single-semester course.
It is an excellent reference for key elements of DSS and related systems. I've followed it through several editions, and when new chapters are introduced, they may be verbose--but they are more focused in later editions. The authors do a good job of describing how computer-based systems support structured, semi-structured, and unstructured decisions and the design, intelligence, and choice framework. The book also has several good general chapters that provide an overview and describe different types of decision support systems. It includes sections on object-oriented systems and knowledge management (KM) systems. It is pretty theoretical and covers a lot of material, yet it's my favorite text for its purpose.
throw it into the trash.......2004-07-19
Used it for school, found it dry, boring, ugly. I got frustrated every time I picked up the book. Really want to throw it into the trash if not for the resell value.
Book Description
Intelligent IT Outsourcing enables practitioners to focus in on the essential issues that need to be addressed so that the fundamental structure of their sourcing strategy and its implementation is sound. The authors provide insight into the challenges likely to be faced and give detailed advice on how to pre-empt and manage these.
IT and outsourcing continue to be problematic, not least because fundamental learning about this subject fails to be applied systematically, and because IT is inherently difficult to manage. The economics are not obvious and emerging technologies have to be addressed, therefore IT goes to the heart of many enterprises and interfaces with multiple business units and processes, and there are continuous skills shortages.
Unfortunately complexities are not removed in outsourced situations where additional problems come into play, for example the supplier's capabilities, whether the IT is right for an outsourcing solution, and whether the contract is robust but flexible enough to allow for outsourcing to take place. Objectives need to be realistic, and factors such as whether the internal management is mature and capable enough in this field, and the impact of prohibitive switching costs on behaviour once an outsourcing deal has been signed all have to be taken into account.
The authors have built up over two decades of research, advisory and practitioner experience that enables them to distil the fundamental challenges in IT and outsourcing and demonstrate how these can be addressed.
* Focuses on the fundamentals of what should be done and what should be avoided, based on actual experience applied in major IT outsourcing deals
* Research findings and case examples included throughout to support recommended practices
* Written by highly experienced, internationally acknowledged experts in the field

Getting it right.......2003-06-19
In the area of outsourcing there are many texts, but few that make it simple to achieve the outsourcing goals an organisation requires. This text is comprehensive, but lays out the process to achieve a successful outcome in a logical and clear manner. It will allow you to undertake IT outsourcing activities inside your organisation while minimising the use of expensive external consultants.
It also focuses on the successful running of the contract once the outsourcing has been completed as this is an area many other texts fall down in. The most impressive part of this book is its focus on the end of contract transition out of the outsourcing deal you create. Regardless of whether it is sucessful or not, at some stage the contract will be re-market tested. It is here that many errors occur resulting in costly delays and degredation of service performance.
If you want a text that relates to the delivery of real world outsourcing outcomes - this is the one for you.
Outsourcing Delight.......2003-06-18
As an Outsourcing Professional a book of this nature is long overdue. It is an insightful presentation, clearly written by an expert in the field. It provides a clear and concise framework on which to build methodologies and arms the reader with the knowledge to go forth and conquer.
This book is a must have for anyone in the IT Outsourcing game no matter what level of the food chain.
Very insightful book!.......2003-06-17
Ms Cullen really knows her stuff when it comes to Outsourcing! I found this book a very comprehensive and useful reference. I think the fact that it is already "dog-eared" and littered with "post-it-notes" is a testament to that!
Great practical book.......2003-06-16
I found this book to be very useful. It allowed me to stay one step ahead of the suppliers. It provided a flexible, but thorough framework that I could easily adapt to different current situations. I had led a few outsourcing projects previously and wish I had it back then!

explains key ideas with minimal maths complications.......2006-01-26
The field of Artificial Intelligence has been around for decades. During which there have been numerous advances and disappointments. Often, the advances have been described in other texts using highly mathematical treatments. All to the good. Except that this does tend to act as a barrier to newcomers to AI, who might not have a very strong maths background. And even for those who do, the sheer amount of maths to understand in those books can be time consuming.
Which is the attraction of Negnevitsky's approach. He deliberately de-emphasises the maths. Enough is retained to give a valid treatment. But it is now far easier to understand the underlying ideas. Such as artificial neural networks. Here, I was also impressed to see him give proper prominence to John Hopfield's seminal contributions to neural network theory.
More generally, the book covers well the entire breadth of AI. From fuzzy systems to genetic algorithms to rule-based systems.
A very good introductory text book for intelligent systems.......2005-06-07
The author explains various AI concepts in very simple terms and has managed to present the math behind some of the ideas in an understandable manner.
The treatment of various topics is intermediate though but it is a good place to start and does not leave the reader riddled with complex math equations.
In-fact the author has done a great job at keeping the concepts separate from the mathematics, except for some places like neural networks where it is not possible to explain the concepts without talking about the math involved.
Instead of focusing too much on a particular aspect of intelligent systems this book deals with a whole spectrum of technologies such as fuzzy systems, neural networks, hybrid systems etc.
The writing style of the author is very simple and clear and it is possible to finish the entire book over a period of one semester or a little more.
Excellent Treatment of Complex Topics.......2003-12-14
What Dr. Negnevitsky states in the preface of this book, "Most of the literature on AI is expressed in the jargon of computer science, and crowded with complex matrix algebra and differential equations" is an accurate assessment of current textbooks that try to go beyond just the basics of AI.
Actually, this book does contain some of the same complex material that Dr. Negnevitsky accuses others for having with one exception: He does a terrific job in simplifying the complex theories behind them.
At first, when I flipped through the pages, huge equations and matrices jumped at me. My first impression was that this book was for serious computer scientists or mathematicians. I was looking for simpler material for my beginning AI students. I started reading the preface and found the argument interesting.
I speed-read through the first chapter and found the history of the field presented in a concise and a very well laid out fashion. I jumped into reading the beginning of chapter 2 and I was amazed at how well Dr. Negnevitsky progressed from basic ideas to more and more complex layers. With other similar books, the reader will need many basic theory books (mathematics, basic AI...) in order to understand the topics. Dr. Negnevitsky provides all the basics necessary. This same strategy is repeated for the remaining chapters.
I acquired the book and read it from beginning to end. I found the material consistently well presented. One warning: this book does get very technical and complex in many chapters. However, the material in each of those chapters is progressively laid out. Even if a reader stops in the middle of some chapters, there is still a lot to gain from the experience of reading the entire book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in really understanding beyond just keywords and delve into the internals of AI topics.
Thanks to Dr. Negnevitsky for a great book.
Great Introductory Book on Soft Computing.......2002-11-10
For a beginner that wants to know where the stories about Soft Computing really converge, this book is a starting point. The style of the author is simple and great.
My interest was to get a book that keeps the daunting mathematical jargons in Fuzzy Logic (contained in several other books) minimal, while presenting the concepts. I fell in love with this book, that I had to run through all the pages as if it's a novel.
This book really demonstrates that the whole idea behind intelligent systems are simple and straightforward. You do not need another teacher. He presented algorithms (e.g. back-propagation)in a very simple to understand manner.
Dr. Michael Negnevitsky, the author, must be a great teacher. It's a handy and nice book. I strongly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introduction.......2003-04-05
Wooldridge's book is a great introduction that guides the reader from motivations, over several agent architectures through to chapters about interaction, methodology and much more. It gets very close to Weiss's book on Distributed Artificial Intelligence but presents a more readable treatise leaving out some of the details and formalisms.
This book will equip the reader with the necessary foundations (and more) allowing her to explore more involved issues on her own. As a companion to Gerhard Weiss's book or as a comprehensive introduction of its own, this book is definitely unbeaten so far.
Fantastic book.......2003-03-07
This book is great to read and highly informative! You can learn about intelligent agents from one of the big names in Agent research.
Great book with lot of references.......2002-08-03
This book gives a clear overview over the board topic of MultiAgent Systems. Explainations are easy to follow and the references at the back of the book are particularly useful for those who want to dig deeper into any specific topic. This book itself will not make one an expert in the field but it provide all necessary knowledge for further independent study.
Very easy to read even for students with English as a second language, ideal for use as a text book at university level.

Excelente libro!.......2003-08-26
Finally a book that explains fieldbus in simple terms!.......2002-02-05
For years I've listened to talk about the wonders of fieldbus. Claims for this technology ranged from "less wire and maintenance" to "world peace and prosperity"! It's now such a relief to have an unbiased book that explains in simple terms some of the most common fieldbus technologies. Hopefully, this information, combined with the growing availability of fieldbus products, will make it possible for me to improve the control system in my plant.

Customer Reviews:
A comprehensive monography.......2005-09-07
This is one out of very few books that exist on multiagent systems and distributed artificial intelligence which won't take for granted the reader. It has really taken me from elementary concepts up to industrial applications, passing over the actual "nitty gritty" of programming an agent. Many papers on artificial intelligence are just too mathematical for many readers, and those which have any application would describe what the program does, but only sometimes you get into knowing *how* the program does the trick. I personally would say the book is a "must-have-it", not only for those seeking to understand in concrete distributed artificial intelligence or multiagent systems, but also for any mathematician, physicists, computer scientists and engineer whose background touches somehow the concepts of artificial intelligence as a whole. Come to think of it, even any cunning philosopher of science could take real advantage of this book. Now then, concerning those industries which would like to have this book on their shelves, they would have to take in mind that this book is a departure point. A good one, but nevertheless only the start for deepening towards a concrete application the industry would have in mind.
Excellent Theoretical and Practical Book.......2001-10-31
Not a beginner's book: The technologies presented are relevant to (gasp) some real life problems. The treatment of Distributed Constraint Satisfaction problems was well written and usable. The initial treatment of all subjects was broad, delving into details after laying a sound foundation. Assumes a bit of mathematical sophistication on the part of the reader, but on the whole, well written, well organized and well worth it.
Great Textbook.......2001-08-27
While perhaps this should not be your first book in AI, it should definitely be your first book on agents. It took me years to accumulate the knowledge present in this book, and it's a great survey of the field for the beginning investigator. However, while this is a great way to get started in agents, understand how agents can be used in intelligent applications (from distributed AI type problem solving, to resource optimization problems), and "get the agent paradigm," coverage of agent software engineering techniques is light. This is not a fault of this book - you will simply need other resources to understand the difficulties and current research in engineering multi agent systems (or indeed any concurrent distributed system). So if you are trying to figure out what to do with agents, or how agent systems work, this is the book for you. If you already know that and want help with formal specification of an agent, verifying your agents meet the specifications, etc. this is not the book for you. Understand that to build systems you will need both!
Great book.......2000-07-03
I have been using this book probably for an year now, and this has become indispensable to my work. The collection of authors in this book reads as an 'who's who' in multiagent systems and distributed AI research. Although, its' difficult to maintain continuity in edited books, the editor has done an commendable job. The authors provide a readable introduction to their area of expertise, and supplement them with an excellent bibliography...enough to get u started fast.
It is a useful book that covers all aspects on the subject........2000-03-28
Thogh edited the book looks like a single authored text. The definitions are clearly presented with illustrations. The presentation is highly comprehensive. The book is thus highly readable with minimum effort. I liked the chapters on distributed problem solving and planning (Chapter 3),Learning in multiagent systems (chapter 6), Formal methods in DAI: Logic based representation and reasoning (chapter 8)and Groupware and computer supported cooperative work (chapter 10) very much.Readers of diverse interest in distributed artificial intelligence will find the other chapters equally interesting and useful. The book should be on the desk of anyone interested to learn the concepts of multiagent systems and technology.
