CCNP Video Mentor is a is a DVD-ROM software product. The enclosed DVD contain a series of succinct instructional videos that demonstrate how to accomplish various CCNP-level configuration tasks on Cisco routers and switches. The 16 videos contained in this product total over 5 hours of instruction. In each individual 10-15 minute video, senior instructor Kevin Wallace walks you through basic configuration tasks. The videos consist of audio instruction, animations, and router and switch CLI video screen-casts. Each video lab presents suggested reading lists, detailed objectives, lab diagrams, command tables, and video captures. Audio instruction throughout offers tips and shortcuts that truly make learning easy. Animated network diagrams show you lab setup, device addressing, and how traffic flows through the network. Video screen-casts of the router and switch CLI demonstrate command entry, configuration techniques, and device response. For several years now, Cisco has included simulation-based assessment into its CCNP exams. These simulation questions require you to perform basic configuration tasks, adding another level of complexity to the certification process. CCNP Video Mentor helps you be better prepared for this aspect of the exam.

Not as ful-filling as I'd hoped.......2007-07-18
I bought the video mentor hoping it would help get me back on track with my CCNP studies. I've been studying off and on for over a year on my CCNP while actively doing in-depth networking during my day job.
First the negatives: there isn't much meat to this study guide. 5 hours for $50+ just doesn't cover it. I paid about half that through my Cisco Press discount and I still feel cheated. The CCNP is so much more detailed than what 5 hours can possibly cover. I've seen CCNA video study guides that 40 hours or more in length. 5 hours to cover a single test really isn't enough in my opinion. I've taken the BSCI twice and didn't pass it either time. The first was due to lack of studying all the relevant IGPs (I never imagines that a full 1/3 of the test would be nothing but EIGRP! I'm much more of an expert IS-IS, BGP and OSPF by far so I bombed the EIGRP portion quite thoroughly). The second failure was due to lack of study time in the weeks leading up to my scheduled retake. Having seen the test twice I can say with absolute certainty that the material covered in Lab 1, which was little more than basic EIGRP, wouldn't be enough answer the EIGRP questions correctly.
That brings me to my second gripe. The test material that was covered is more on par with entry-level CCNA material than CCNP material. Sure the MQC labs touched on some more advanced material like the LFI lab but the overwhelming majority of the material is the basic fundamentals at most. I feel in no way prepared to go back and take the new CCNP courses based on these videos. Either the material is way too basic or I'm really good, much more so than I think I am. This DVD is more like an Intro to the video mentor that mistakenly took on some of the more CCNA topics.
My last gripe is on the use of the SDM in a couple of the labs. I haven't taken any of the new CCNP tests since they revised them this past winter. However I seriously doubt if they use the SDM for any of it. I really didn't get anything out of the SDM sections which covered configuring an IPSec L2L tunnel as well as going through the basic router hardening processes. I believe the IOS firewall section also relied on the SDM. I really got nothing from those sections. We didn't even get a good look at the config that the SDM applied.
As far as my positive remarks: Kevin really did do a wonderful job of presenting the material. He clearly went out of his way to thoroughly explain what he was doing and why. For me it was too much hand-holding but I can easily see where others would need that level of quality attention. Kevin did an excellent job of presenting the material that they gave him to present. I would love to have had him present all the material that I thought should have been included.
The video was edited pretty well. It did cut off the last few seconds of each video which might not be noticeable in some cases and in others it clipped a few of Kevin's words. I do however wish they'd done something else with the video player. There isn't an installer for the content on the DVD. You can copy it to your hard drive if you want. Otherwise it will spin up the DVD drive every few seconds to cache a few more seconds of the video. Ideally the content would either be installed to disk or the player would cache much more of the content at once. I also wish the presentation had been more than a single screen. I would have liked to have had the opportunity to refer back to the network diagram from each lab during a configuration stage without having to rewind the video. Something more akin to the online training on the CPN pages or the Partner E-Learning site would have been more useful.
So, overall it's an alright product. It won't cover much of the CCNP material but I don't fault Kevin for that. For the price it's probably not a worthwhile purchase, especially for only 5 hours of material. The content is well-presented though. I would definitely buy any of Kevin's future works.
It's a top pick highly recommended for either self instruction or college-level classrooms........2007-06-17
CCNP VIDEO MENTOR holds over five hours of personal video instruction on CCNP configuration tasks: while not a pick for the casual computer user or non-CCNP programmer, it will prove CCNP visual instruction perfect for any who plan on using CCNP in configuration processes. From lab setup and device addressing to traffic flows, network operations, routers and more, any facing the CCNP exam must have this package. It's a top pick highly recommended for either self instruction or college-level classrooms.

See it, Practice it, Do it.....Succeed!.......2007-05-26
I picked up Kevin's Video mentor title when I was preparing for the rigors of the CCNP. I am familiar with other Cisco Press books but this was the first "video" product that I have used from them. I was pleased to see that all of the critical commands are outlined in the hardcopy text that accompanied the book. When I popped in the DVD I found it well organized, allowing me to focus in on topics specific to the exam of interest at the time. Having an expert like Kevin walk through all of the critical configurations gave me the knowledge I needed to then practice these on my own. I found the reference guide helpful as well, as I went out on my own gear and banged away with these commands. Having the chance to not only see the commands, but to also get solid training as to their usage via the DVD was critical to my learning. One by one I worked through the exams with the help of this DVD and found that I was very well prepared when it came time for each exam. The Cisco configurations that can be on the exams are one of the most challenging aspects of the exam process. Having the CCNP Video Mentor helped me to learn the critical commands necessary to succeed and gave me the resources I needed to practice these again and again. I really could not have done nearly as well as I did on these configuration tasks without the CCNP Video Mentor!
Where's the beef?.......2007-05-07
The material that is covered is presented well. Unfortunately, there is just not enough material covered to justify the price. The videos are packaged in a single non-copy protected DVD. There is room for more than 2 GB of additional content. This would be a much better product if Cisco Press would use this space to deliver more content!

Mixed, but good........2007-02-15
I've a long history with CC, and SWCM. This is a good book for simpler projects, and it has some good tips I had learned, but hadn't seen in print. I wish it worked a bit more on the successful patterns that scale to really big projects, but that's not where the market is for books, right?
Just the right info, just the right time.......2007-01-11
I purchased this book as a new Configuration Manager to the Rational suite of tools. I have used other 'big' CM tools in the past, but was unfamiliar with ClearCase. The book is very well laid out, has very good information and definitions that I have used in other presentations as I prepare to roll out a ClearCase solution to my team. After reading the first 1/2 of the book, I felt very versed on the tool, and was able to refer to my knowledge in conversations with other team members about how ClearCase is to work. I recommend that if you are new or even experienced with ClearCase, that you purchase this book for yourself. You will find in no time that you will mark many pages with yellow sticky's and highlight passages that you'll refer to many times!
Must have for SCM practitioners with ClearCase UCM.......2005-08-19
Was the first edition mostly a repeat of the UCM manual that comes with the installation, this second edition brings more valuable, strategic information about SCM and ClearCase UCM. It is a must-read for SCM practitioners working with UCM or considering a step towards UCM. In fact, the SCM strategies covered in this book are a must-read for any SCM practitioner. Issues like quality promotion, parallel development and composite configurations are becoming quite common to modern software development organizations.
Subjects that I am missing are activity management (as part of project management), reporting and audit trails, customizations (e.g. role based permissions, automation, triggers) and integration with other development tools (e.g. requirements and test assets).
It is very difficult to find just the right book about SCM, with the right balance between theory and practice. Well, this book is it for Unified Change Management.
Excellent Second Edition - lots of new information.......2005-08-09
As a long-time ClearCase user, consultant, Rational field rep, and all-around proponent of SCM, I found this book to be a wonderful update of Brian White's first edition. Tom and Dave have an extremely readable style of writing that you don't often find in technical publications. For the uninitiated, this book will serve as a great introduction to SCM concepts, ClearCase and the Unified Change Management process. For the experienced SCM administrator, this book is full of tips and practical "how-to" based on Tom and Dave's decades of experience in the SCM field.

Book Description
It used to be that two laptops, sitting side by side, couldn't communicate with each other; they may as well have been a thousand miles apart. But that was then, before the advent of Zero Configuration Networking technology. This amazing cross-platform open source technology automatically connects electronic devices on a network, allowing them to interoperate seamlessly-without any user configuration. So now you don't have to lift a finger! Needless to say, it has completely changed the way people connect to devices and programs for printing, file sharing, and other activities.
Zero Configuration Networking: The Definitive Guide walks you through this groundbreaking network technology, with a complete description of the protocols and ways to implement network-aware applications and devices.
Written by two Zero Configuration Networking experts, including one of Apple's own computer scientists, the book covers more than just file sharing and printing. Zero Configuration Networking also enables activities such as music and photo sharing and automatic buddy discovery on Instant Messaging applications. In fact, Zero Configuration Networking can be used for virtually any device that can be controlled by a computer. And this handy guide has the inside scoop on all of its capabilities-and how you can easily apply them in your own environment.
For the technically advanced, Zero Configuration Networking: The Definitive Guide examines the three core technologies that make up Zero Configuration Networking: Link-Local Addressing, Multicast DNS, and DNS Service Discovery. It also reviews a series of APIs, including C-API, Java API, CFNetServices, and Cocoa's NSNetServices.
Whether you want to understand how iTunes works, or you want to network a series of laptops and other devices at your office for maximum efficiency, you'll find all the answers in this authoritative guide.

VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-08-16
Are you a curious user or software developer or hardware developer? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Daniel Steinberg and Stuart Cheshire, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that provides an in-depth look at the components of Zeroconf technology and a survey of programming APIs that will allow you to Zeroconf-enable your product.
Steinberg and Stuart Cheshire, begin by giving you a quick overview of the various components that make up Zeroconf. Then, the authors discuss link-local addressing. Next, they provide a description of multicast DNS. The authors then provide you with a description of DNS Service Discovery. They continue by introducing the concepts of DNS Service Discovery and focus on how it applies to discovering services on the local link using Multicast DNS. Then, the authors introduce the dns-sd command line toll that lets you experiment with Zeroconf service advertising and discovery before you actually write your first line of Zeroconf.code. Next, they introduce you to the C API for advertising and browsing for services. The authors then explain the Java API, which lets you write portable cross-platform programs that will run on any supported platform that ha Java and Zeroconf installed. They continue by describing two of the Bonjour APIs that are specific to Mac OS X: CFNet-Services and Cocoa's NSNetServices. Finally, they outline the Zeroconf support appearing in some unexpected languages like Ruby and Python.
This most excellent book shows you how you can, with very little effort, make your devices a lot easier to use. More importantly, this book explains how you can add the benefits of TCP/IP networking to your products without having to sacrifice ease of use.

Three 'Hacks' titles provide options for working with networks, images and programs.
Book Description
Get ready for the new CCNP Support exam with the updated CCNP: Support Study Guide, 2nd Edition. Organized for optimal learning and retention, this book provides in-depth coverage of all exam objectives along with practical insights drawn from real-world experience. The accompanying CD includes hundreds of challenging review questions, electronic flashcards, and a searchable electronic version of the entire book. The mid-level Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification was developed by Cisco to validate advanced knowledge of Cisco-based networks. The Support exam (#640-606) is one of the four core exams that cover a wide range of topics, including installing, configuring, operating, and troubleshooting LAN, WAN, and dial-up access services for organizations with mid-to-large sized networks. Cisco recently "refreshed" the four CCNP exams, adding new questions and question formats to the pool, but leaving the previous set of exam objectives intact.

Here goes Sybex again! (only 1 thing to warn you).......2003-08-17
This book ALONE will be enough for you to pass 640-606.
The only small weak point that I found was in the section where they were explaining "silicon switching""netflow switching"..etc, the whole explanation was not that clear; Cisco Press' equivalent book did a better job in this section. Except for this, I found this book was a way better than Cisco one with more detailed explanation for each subject.
With Sybex book of Support, I finished my CCNP study. Sybex was always there for me to help me out for each exam. I cannot thank them too much. Their books are easy, clear and fun to read.
Please note the Dates of the reviews........2003-04-24
The current test is 640-606 which came out in the first of 2002. This book is only been out sense September 20, 2002. Only one review is of the current edition. The old editions are very poor study guides. However, the current editions of the books are more in line with the test. As for the two new exams that I have taken, I found the Sybex as good as if not better than the Cisco.
The best options for the CCNP tests are to get both Sybex and the Cisco. Note however, that the Cisco books for this test (Support) and Remote Access and are for the old exams! Also Cisco books are poorly written and are full of errors and the Sybex will compliment the poor Cisco books
Disappointed with this particular Sybex book.......2002-07-24
I have used Sybex for the routing/switching and remote access exam and passed the respective exams. But this book on the other hand was lacking some of the information on various categories of the official exam. Today I have purchased the official Cisco press book for this exam, which I will likely do for now on in the future. For now I have to pay for this exam AGAIN, this was the first I have failed. Good Luck!
Sufficient if you are experienced.......2002-05-29
This book is a poor to fair study tool for those of you preparing for the CCNP Support examination. Although I have a good amount of experience with Cisco routers I have very limited experience with Cisco switches and RAS solutions. Depending on the amount of the experience you have this book may or may not be enough to prepare you for the exam. I normally expect study guides such as this one to assist me in overcoming the areas I am weak in, but this study guide does not do that.
In general the text is technically correct; however, it does not explore several important topics, such as Cisco NMS and support options, in sufficient detail and it is poorly organized. There were several topic areas on the exam, Token Ring is the best example, that I was totally unprepared for. The text does provide an overview of Token Ring operation and offers two examples of Token Ring network troubleshooting but does absolutely nothing to prepare you with the knowledge you will need to correctly answer the Token Ring questions on the test.
Overall my satisfaction level with the Sybex series of study guides for the CCNP exams is fairly low. For the next Cisco exam I take I plan on purchasing one of the Cisco texts.

not good enough.......2001-10-12
Not a very helpful book for CIT 2.0 exam. Cisco Troubleshooting book is much better for CCNP exam.

Three cheers for the Nutshell format! There may be no better printed style for command-line environments, like the Internetwork Operating System (IOS) that runs on Cisco Systems routers. Cisco IOS in a Nutshell documents the most important bits of the frequently arcane IOS command line from aaa accounting to write, thereby providing a valuable resource to everyone who works with IOS. The reference section--which makes up about 60 percent of this book--summarizes each command (again, they're not all covered, but the ones that aren't are pretty obscure) with a statement of its scope (global, interface, line, or whatever), followed by generalized syntax summaries in the style of Unix man pages (these indicate the legal combinations of switches and parameters). Then, a detailed discussion of each switch and parameter clarifies what each is for. The whole reference section is alphabetical, with lettered dark boxes on the pages' outer edges that are easy to scan while flipping pages rapidly.
Prior to the reference section, the author explains how the IOS interface refers to and controls aspects of routers, such as lines and interfaces. He does a great job of it, too--you could do far worse than to read his explanations before going to work under IOS for the first time. The other great value of this early section is in the author's discussion of how to configure a new router by bringing interfaces, data-communication protocols (like TCP/IP), routing protocols (like Border Gateway Protocol, or BGP), and services like Domain Name Service (DNS) online. This book is a tremendous value for Cisco engineers. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to configure a Cisco Systems router with the Internetwork Operating System (IOS). The most popular commands are documented, and there's a tutorial section that familiarizes readers with the Cisco way of thinking about a router's work. The author uses IOS 12.x as his baseline, though users of older versions will find his work valuable.
Book Description
Routers are the glue that holds the Internet together, and Cisco Systems--holding roughly 70% of the market--is the most prominent router manufacturer. Cisco's routers come in all shapes and sizes and almost all of them, from the smallest to the largest, run the IOS operating system. IOS is an extremely powerful and complex operating system, with an equally complex configuration language. There are many commands, with many options, and if one thing is configured incorrectly, the entire company could find itself offline.
Cisco IOS in a Nutshell covers IOS configuration for the TCP/IP protocol family. The book is divided into two parts: the first part includes chapters on the user interface, configuring lines and interfaces, access lists, routing protocols, and dial-on-demand routing and security; the second part is a classic O'Reilly-style quick reference to all the commands that you need to work with TCP/IP, including the lower-level protocols on which it relies, and lots of examples of the most commonly encountered configuration steps for the routers themselves.

Must for Cisco Network Professionals.......2007-09-20
I bought this book for my Master's research paper on Cisco IOS.
I have found this book to be a good source on IOS's architecture. It has approximately 120 pages dedicated to general internetworking fundamentals such as differences betwen RIP, OSPF, and EIGRP.
The rest of the book is dedicated to IOS commands and proper syntax usages. This is a great reference book and good overview of networking concepts.
Perfect for understanding the nuiances in Cisco IOS.......2007-09-19
This is a great book. It covers the basics of IOS and will give the intermediate and advance users more than they have bargained for.
Nutshell books are always good.......2007-03-25
What can I say. Nutshell books are great. I own dozens of them and they are almost always great refererence manuals. This one is pretty good too.
Book for Work.......2006-03-16
I am taking a college course on Cisco products and programming. The professor recommended this book. I have used the book many times researching answers for school and work. The book gives short clear direct descriptions and examples. Ideal for the working person or student concerned with Cisco products and/or networking in general.
VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!.......2006-02-17
Are you a network administrator who is using a Cisco router in an IP environment? If you are, this book is for you. Author James Boney, has written an outstanding 2nd edition of a book that is for everybody who has to deal with Cisco's routers.
Boney, begins by covering the Cisco user interface. Then, he discusses several methods for uploading a new IOS image. The author continues by covering most of the configuration items that make routers more manageable and easier to tame. In addition, he shows you how to use line commands. The author also shows you how to use interface commands. Then, the author covers some networking technologies that you are likely to encounter, such as frame relay, ATM, cable, DSL, and VoIP. Next, he shows you how to use access lists. Next, the author discusses a number of topics that are common to all of the protocols. Then, he discusses interior routing protocols, including Routing Information Protocol (RIP); the Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP), and the newer Enhanced IGRP (EIGRP); Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), and Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (IS-IS). The author continues by discussing the Border Gateway Protocol. In addition, he covers Cisco's new advanced tools for QoS management as well: Modular QoS CLI (MQC), Class-Based Weighted Fair Queing (CBWFQ), and Network-Based Application Recognition (NBAR). In addition, he covers Cisco's IOS support for dial-on-demand categories: Legacy DDR and Dialer profiles. The author also covers a number of IP configuration topics that won't find their way into simple configurations. Then, the author describes Cisco switches, with an emphasis on IOS-enabled switches. Next, the author describes the first simple steps you can take toward router security. Finally, he discusses techniques for troubleshooting and monitoring your router.
This excellent book is primarily a quick reference to the commands that are most frequently needed to configure Cisco routers for standard IP routing tasks. Above all, this book represents practical experience with IP routing on Cisco routers and covers commands that you're likely to need.

save your money !.......1999-10-05
There is no depth, and the writer constantly sits on the fence during technical discussion. Additionally, there is no information regarding how specific packages deploy the protocols.
Great Content, Lousy Editor.......1999-07-09
I purchased this book on the way to the airport in transit to yep, fixing a distributed DHCP server problem. I found a great deal of useful information in the book, and after having read the book, I am considered an expert among most mortals.
The book successfully turns the RFCs on the subject into readable text, and liberal use of footnotes are there to explain some of the more esoteric notions, and shows packet formation, which is a valuable visual aid.
Unfortunately, I also found an unacceptable number of editing errors. Kercheval (author) has done a very good job with presenting the information, but the editor missed a lot. The book was edited by Radia Perlman (says so on the back cover), and I have to say if I see his/her/its name on other books as editor, I'll have to pass.
This book has a lot of usefulness in it, but the errors in editing are glaring if you know anything at all about networking. Normally, I wouldn't be too upset about typos, but in technical works one wrong character can change the entire meaning of whatever point is being made. My technical writing professor in college would have flunked this editor in a heartbeat.
I forwarded a list of my concerns to both the author and the publisher. Kercheval was interested in them, the publisher did not fill my heart with warm fuzzies, or even acknowledge receipt. A simple "Thank You" would have been nice. A next edition with the corrections would be fantastic.
If you want the guts of DHCP, and you need it now, go ahead and by this edition. If you can wait til Prentice Hall gets it right, then buy the next edition. Personally, if I were Kercheval, I'd be majorly P.O.ed... Can you sue a publisher for malpractice?
NOT WORTH THE MONEY.......1999-04-30
I bought this book in hopes in would help me understand dhcp for the mcse exams. Well, I was wrong. $45 down the drain. This book has no more information than any of the other tcp/ip books on the subject of dhcp. Dont let the dollar price fool you into thinking your getting a good book. Needless to say, I was very disappointed in this book.
Where is the depth?.......1999-01-06
This book gives a good overview of dhcp in the first 5 or 6 chapters but is definately not a "definitive guide". The trouble is I really felt a lot of detail was left out.
After about page 60 (halfway thru the book if you dont count the appendices) things really started to get a bit light on detail. The SINGLE chapter on configuring dhcp servers covered how define multiple addresss ranges but seemed to skip the details of how to get the server to choose which range to allocate to a particular client. The chapters on DDNS and LDAP seemed to do little more than say what DDNS and LDAP are.
I will say that the appendices do contain useful information (a list of the DHCP options and a copy of 4 key RFCs) but this is all information easily obtained over the internet.
All in all I was disappointed with this book. It would have been a good $20-$25 intro book. It is not in my opinion a good buy if you are looking for a definitive guide.
Illustrated DHCP -- I wish, I'd have had that book years ago.......1998-12-31
Berry Kercheval's book on DHCP fills a gap that has been there for several years, but has become increasingly apparent over the course of the last few years. Until now, you had to either dig into the official RFC documents if you wanted to learn about the gritty details of DHCP and related protocols or you could resort to the documentation that your vendor decided to ship -- if any. For some of the older and more established protocols, (such as ARP, UDP, TFTP, ...)helpful information
was available from books such as Richard Steven's "UNIX Network Programming".
This new book, discusses DHCP in great detail and comes with lots of relevant illustrated examples that are clearly split into both client- and server-specific cases. All of the related protocols are explained and examples are given -- albeit not with the same level of detail as for DHCP.
One highly useful chapter, lists the majority of DHCP clients and servers that are currently in use. It then goes on to provide useful tips and tricks, and points out strengths, weaknesses, and idiosyncracies. It is interesting to note, that the author makes a point in keeping this chapter -- as all of the other chapters -- as independant of particular architectures (e.g. UNIX, Windows, Mac) as possible. To system adminstrators who have to deal with heterogenous networks, this is a welcome change from the majority of books on networking that are currently on the market.
I would recommend "A Guide to Dynamic Tcp/Ip Network Configuration" to anybody who needs to learn more about the internals of the DHCP protocol. It is invaluable to people implementing their own DHCP software; administrators configuring DHCP clients and servers will find relevant background information that will prove crucial once a DHCP installation needs to be debugged or once network topology and system configuration gets more complex than the simple cases anticipated by vendors of DHCP software; and finally, anybody who always wanted to know what made their computers tick, will find Berry Kercheval's book a very readable and gentle introduction into a complex subject matter.

New Edition of the book available..........2004-12-18
The new revised, enlarged and updated edition of this book --Software Configuration Management Handbook, Second Edition (ISBN: 1580538827)--is now available at Amazon.
Solid, to-the-point primer on SCM.......2004-06-18
There are more comprehensive books on SCM, such as Jessica Keyes' "Software Configuration Management" (ISBN 0849319765), but none that will get you as quickly up-to-speed on the basics and key issues as this book.
Mr. Leon steps you through the what's, why's and how's of software configuration management in a clearly written manner that is refreshingly devoid of fluff or side trips into esoteric areas. He clearly explains the entire SCM cycle from identification to configuration Control to status accounting to audits and reviews. Each of these critical areas are explained in sufficient detail to allow you to thoroughly understand the scope and complexity of SCM without becoming overwhelmed.
Another strength of this book is the chapter on configuration management plans, which will provide the new SCM practitioner with a solid starting point and template from which to work. The chapters on SCM organization, implementation and SCM in large projects are also solid and quick reads with enough information to get you started.
Some of the material in this book is, unfortunately, out of date - the chapters on tools and Internet resources could use an update - or better, a supporting web site instead of inclusion in the book - but the chapter on standards is still applicable and is a good resource for further research.
If you're an experienced SCM practitioner I recommend you get Jessica Keyes' book I cited above; however, if you are new to SCM and want a quick-start guide that will give you the basics this is the best book on the subject.
Accessible style; good introduction.......2002-04-14
Good introduction to the topic of software configuration management. The field attracts those who (there is no way to say this kindly) have rather dry writing styles, but this was more accessible than most.
The book focused on preparing for a CM system, and provided adequate food for thought on some of the relevenat topics. However, details of implementation, and actual CM system use were neglected. Also would have been nice to include some appendices providing model CM plans and model suporting processes / procedures, but the book did provide a thorough list of resources.
All-in-all, a quick, accomodating read. Good introduction to SCM.
An easy-to-read, jargon free book on SCM.......2001-03-16
This book is not like the other books on SCM. It is written in an easy-to-read and jargon free style and explains the SCM concepts, advantages and benefits of SCM. It also tells you how to implement SCM and what are the problems that you should be aware off. The chapter on SCM tools is excellent and so is the chapter on SCM in very large projects. Overall a very practical and user-friendly book. As a project manager of a large development project (more than 60 people), I have greatly benefitied from this book.
Same old coverage.......2001-03-13
I was sorely disappointed in this book. I went by other reader's recommendations and I'm at a loss as to why it's got a 5-star rating. I was, and still am, looking for a source that will get past the theory & history and describe how to complete the process: What do you do after you've baselined & have to produce a build?

A Great Survey of In-System Configuration!.......2003-10-21
In System Configuration (aka on-board programming or in-system programming) is an application space that is porrly documented and reported on - until now! This book covers the history of programmable logic and the introduction of in-system programming and then surveys the application space as it exists today. There is a focus on IEEE STD 1532 that is a helpful addendum to the standard itself. Especially interesting is the discussion on applications of ISC. I found that an real eye-opener and made me look at programmable logic (FPGAs, CPLDs) in a whole new way.

The book has only 136 pages. If you subtract the pages for index, introduction, copyright, title, and so on, how many pages are really left for the cookbook?

The Cisco Remote Access exam (640-505), one of the larger hurdles you'll have to overcome as you make your way toward your Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) professional rating, trips up lots of candidates. Even if you have some experience with Cisco wide area networks (WANs), you're well advised to pick up a book like CCNP: Building Cisco Remote Access Networks Study Guide. It explains the material you'll be tested on in absolute terms (which means you can use it also as an on-the-job resource) and supplements the explanations with test-specific sections that show you how the material is likely to appear on the exam. This combined approach is good in that it will prepare you for both the content and the form of the exam.
The book often makes side comments on, for example, what interpretation of debatable issues is likely to be considered "correct" in an exam question. Each chapter concludes with exam-like multiple-choice questions, which are followed by explanations of why the answer is what it is. Exercises make up some of the most useful parts of this book; in a typical one, you learn the process of setting up a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection with Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP). Each required input command is presented and the output that appears in response listed, annotating each input/output cycle with informative text. --David Wall
Topics covered: The published objectives of the Cisco Remote Access exam (640-505), including wide area network (WAN) concepts, configuration of an asynchronous interface on a Cisco router, implementing Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and various authentication schemes, Dial-on-Demand Routing (DDR), and leased lines. The section on the Cisco 7000-series routers and the ins and outs of their configuration is particularly good.

Customer Reviews:
Too many errors.......2002-03-29
I read this book and passed the test on the first try, but half of the questions on the test weren't even covered in this book. That along with the ridiculous amount of grammatical errors in this book made it the last one from this publisher that I will buy.
Bottom line: You can pass the test with this book if you know all the information in it, but your passing score will be barely passing.
Very underrated........2002-02-10
I bought this book as extra material simply because the Cisco Press CCNP prep titles had been consistently disappointing and I wanted to try something more. Well, I'm sorry I didn't check out Syngress Media titles from the beginning of my CCNP journey, if this book is any indication of their quality. It is excellent. Yes, a couple of chapters are a bit of a wash (particularly later in the book), and there are errors here and there, but no more so than the official Cisco Press course material that is so frequently lauded (and that is some of the driest, most poorly organized study material anyone could torture themselves with to begin with).
This book was a great read, with good insight and explanations, and was for the most part accurate and an excellent study guide. Far better than Sybex's Lammle titles and better than the official BCRAN Cisco Press book.
some good chapters, some not so good.......2001-07-19
Here are some of the chapters that I already gone through: Chapter 1 Remarks - a "just sufficient" introduction to different types of WAN link and protocols for people with CCNA and ACRC background. Chapter 2 - they are talking about various types of remote access routers - but they do not show you any diagram. So to clear the confusion I have to go and download those model from Cisco site. Chapter 3. The author get us `feet wet' by giving a nuts and bolts lecture on synchronous and asynchronous communication, PCM, TDM, DS0 and all that, and launch into chat script and group async interface config. But at the end I still wonder what my router can do with all these configuration. Bad, Bad. Chapter 4. Things that are unclear in chapter 3 become clearer after reading chapter 4 - may be they should merge and topics re-arranged. Many chapter 3 topics are repeated in chapter 4 - coordination break down? Chapter 5. The going gets a bit tough starting chapter 5 - when we go real deep into PPP. CHAP PAP is given good coverage with example scenario, but compression is presented with careless offhand manner - though probably sufficient for exam. Callback is a bit cloudy - many commands discussed does not fit in the callback example - so I don't know how to use them. And then the multilink is well explained in a way that layman can understand - but it looks incomplete. Where is the interface and line command for Multichassis Multilink PPP? How to use autoselect? chapter 7 and 9 are useful, practical topics on configuring and verifying DDR, chapter 8 goes tremendously deep into ISDN specification that I have difficulty understanding them after repeated attempts. Chapter 11. The author's presentation of x.25 and frame-relay is overwhelmingly academic and too rigorous - someone should check if it is relevant to certification objective. The whole chapter does not have the usual goodies like "ExamWatch", "From the classroom", "Question and Answer" that appears in all other chapters. After my N attempts to struggle through this chapter without success - I am now falling back on Syngress ACRC and the infamous Andrew Bruce Caslow's Cisco Certification for Frame Relay, and perhaps some other source for X.25. Chapter 13. Suprisingly, after some hard reading, I find that I can understand NAT - quite well explained. Chapter 14. They are talking about AAA, Radius, etc. very lost. Sadden. Details appear to be there, but just couldn't make good sense of it. The patient, one step by one step approach in chapter 13 on NAT did not carry over to this chapter, and I find my mind working overdrive to fill in the missing link. Overall, I think this is one strange book that give you most of the information you need to pass the exam - but along the way, get you so confused that you might never pass the exam without the help of other books.
Remote Access study Guide........2001-07-04
Excellent reference material to reinforce my preparation for the BCRAN test. I usually used several books for my review. I have no complaint for ... I paid way back in Dec. 2000.
Absolute Nightmare.......2001-03-16
I am nearly completed reading this atrocious book and as frustrated as I am, I need to continue since exam date is hovering ever so close. While some chapters do a fantastic job of explaining the tediously technical, other chapters appear to be cut and pasted from Cisco's own CCO. I could have done just as well and saved myself some money but I purchased a book hoping to find clarification of difficult topics. Want to know more about ISDN, Frame Relay and X.25? Go elsewhere! Labs without explanation, errors galore, even questions that editors forgot to review! Save your money!
