Book Description

A follow-up to his best-selling E-Learning, Beyond E-Learning explains the most current thinking on how organizations learn and apply what they know to be successful, and explores the increasingly important role that technology plays, not as an end in itself but as a vital means to get there. The book also provides a clear path for helping to integrate learning—including e-learning—knowledge management, and performance support, and will help training professionals and the organizations they serve go beyond common myths and misconceptions about training and e-learning, focus training/learning activities directly on organizational know-how, and implement a framework that can (at last) be a catalyst for true organizational learning.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference.......2007-06-15

I have been using this book for grad course at Roosevelt U. Most books used for the classroom are dry and outdated, but I found "Beyond E-learning" informative and innovative. I would highly recommend this book to all Learning and Development professionals. If this wasn't a very good book, I would take the time to write this blurb.

Sub-Title: Approaches and Technologies to Enhance Organizational Knowledge, Learning, and Performance

This book is the second edition or followup to the authors original book on E-Learning. It is perhaps the most complete analysis on the subject.

Education is in an interesting time. The basic structure of the ecucational system of a teacher and a group of students gathered around him dates from the time of the Greeks. Computer aided instruction where essentially a computer uses some of these same techniques to pass the knowledge of an expert on to students using a computer.

There are, a lot of little steps between the idea and the actuality. Of course there are the mechanics of how to do it. And there is the problem of finding the right teachers. [One military training course, set up by people who have 'been there, done that' teaches things like selecting a candy bar that won't melt in the desert (M&M's?) and how to armor a truck.] There's also playing on the skill that today's game playing kids have learned playing video games. What a way to teach someone how to drive a tank!

This is a book I'd recommend to anyone interested in or in charge of setting up a computer based training program. Dr. Rosenberg has 'been there, done that' in so far as e-learning is concerned.

5 out of 5 stars Rich with details.......2006-04-06

Marc has taken the time to explain through examples what we need to know to make wise decisions about E-Learning. I walked away with ideas and guidelines I can use immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for managers of smart enterprises.......2006-03-15

Once again, Marc Rosenberg shows us the way to really transform our organizations into efficient, effective knowledge-centered enterprises. He warns that e-Learning, like training in general, is often done the wrong way, for the wrong reasons. He busts myths right and left (the section on "the myths of e-Learning" alone is worth the purchase price!), and steadfastly refuses to be swept along by fads, technologies -- or even traditions of training.

What Rosenberg does is to lay out a vision of the Smart Enterprise, in which the focus is on performers rather than learners. He argues persuasively that technologies such as e-Learning, classroom learning, knowledge management, communications and collaboration technologies are best viewed not as individual technologies (or fads), but rather as complementary parts of a balanced strategy for performance improvement in enterprises which effectively translate data to knowledge to information to performance. Detailed chapters then discuss each of the key components of this strategy for performance improvement, including practical advice on how to implement them and where the pitfalls are. Examples and issue sidebars featuring luminaries in the field and corporate success stories add weight to the argument.

This is not just another "business book of the month" full of quick-fix half-truths. It is a mature, broad and comprehensive view of what it really takes to make any knowledge-intensive organization get what it needs to reach its goals. Senior line organization managers will find it essential; training managers will find it liberating and exhilerating -- or threatening. It's required reading for everyone responsible for making their enterprises smart.

Book Description

Is your talent strategy a unique competitive advantage? As competition for top talent increases, companies must recognize that decisions about talent and its organization can have a significant strategic impact.

Beyond HR shows how organizations can uncover distinctive talent contributions, strategically differentiate their HR practices and metrics, and more optimally allocate talent to create value. Illustrations from companies such as Disney, Boeing, and Corning describe a new decision science called Talentship, that reveals opportunities by identifying strategy pivot points and the optimal talent and organization decisions that address them.

A unique framework helps readers identify their own distinctive strategic pivot points and connect them to talent decisions, showing how today’s “HR” can evolve to fulfill its potential as a source of strategic advantage.

    Book Description

The field of knowledge management focuses on how organizations can most effectively store, manage, retrieve, and enlarge their intellectual properties. The repository view of knowledge management emphasizes the gathering, providing, and filtering of explicit knowledge. The information in a repository has the advantage of being easily transferable and reusable. But it is not easy to use decontextualized information, and users often need access to human experts.

This book describes a more recent approach to knowledge management, which the authors call "expertise sharing." Expertise sharing emphasizes the human aspects--cognitive, social, cultural, and organizational--of knowledge management, in addition to information storage and retrieval. Rather than focusing on the management level of an organization, expertise sharing focuses on the self-organized activities of the organization’s members. The book addresses the concerns of both researchers and practitioners, describing current literature and research as well as offering information on implementing systems. It consists of three parts: an introduction to knowledge sharing in large organizations; empirical studies of expertise sharing in different types of settings; and detailed descriptions of computer systems that can route queries, assemble people and work, and augment naturally occurring social networks within organizations.

Capitalize on Your Company's Intangible Assets…

    Leading Companies Show You How

"Einstein in the Boardroom makes a great sequel to Edison in the Boardroom. Those readers who found the examples and war stories of Edison to be useful in their own IP-management activities will find the same qualities in Einstein. This resource will help anyone in the intangibles management community who seeks to go beyond intellectual property and understand and capitalize on the full range of a firm's intellectual capital."—Julie Davis, coauthor, Edison in the Boardroom

"Harrison and Sullivan continue to elevate understanding of the value of intellectual assets and, more importantly, provide a 'clinic' on the practical steps necessary to turn theory into bottom-line results."—Jeff Weedman, Vice President, External Business Development The Procter & Gamble Company

"Einstein in the Boardroom is a valuable guide for business managers considering how to leverage intangible assets for profit."—Joe Beyers, Vice President, Intellectual Property Licensing, Hewlett-Packard Company

"Going deeper into value creation for companies, Einstein in the Boardroom describes new ways to extract value from 'I-stuff' on knowledge, a tremendous asset that is too rarely exploited and could be leveraged by all readers of this great book."—Beatrix de Russe, Executive Vice President, Licensing and Intellectual Property, Thomson

"Einstein in the Boardroom is a must-read for CEOs, CFOs, and board chairs facing the financial governance issues of share price, wealth creation, and value realization. When today's financial management systems may only deal with 20 percent of the value of the firm, Harrison and Sullivan offer a look at what a company can do to successfully create and extract value from the 'other' 80 percent, and they show you how other companies have done it!"—Bill Swirsky, Vice President, Knowledge Development The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants

"Identifying, managing, and leveraging knowledge and intangible assets has enabled Cargill to differentiate itself from its competitors and increase its profitability. Harrison and Sullivan provide a clear perspective on how intangible assets fit within the corporate landscape and how to manage them to increase value for the organization."—Harry J. Gwinnell, Vice President and Chief IP Counsel, Cargill

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Valuable resource for today's business world.......2006-06-08

What I found most helpful was that Einstein in the Boardroom featured multiple case studies around commercializing IP with a rare peek behind the scenes of how companies are doing business in this area today. For example, there is an entire chapter about the dramatic culture change that occurred at P&G that has led to the company being "open for business" through its Connect + Develop initiatives (which was recently featured in March's Harvard Business Review), willing to collaborate and work with other companies. The examples provided are tangible, leading edge, and relevant.

Definitely helpful to those looking for new business models or to small/mid-size companies willing to work with a larger company and wondering how.

5 out of 5 stars Useful practical advice from industry leaders.......2006-06-04

The authors have identified key elements missing from previous discussions of the general topic, and have performed a very useful state-of-the-art survey and synthesis of the practices of leading-edge companies that are seeking to extract value from their intangible assets. Though I'm not a big fan of their "I-stuff" terminology (it's a bit too "cutesy" for my pedestrian tastes), the authors have clearly identified the ways in which the more traditional terms "intellectual property" and "intellectual capital" are too narrow to capture what is at stake.

Recommended for anyone working in the field, whether as a stand-alone work or as a worthy successor to "Profiting from Intellectual Capital" and "Edison in the Boardroom."

The consulting profession has become one of the fastest-growing industries in the '90s, and observers expect that both the demand for such services and the avocation's undeniable allure will continue to draw people into the profession. However, management consultant Elaine Biech believes that most newcomers are completely unprepared for the operational realities they encounter. So after two decades of mastering the accounting, marketing, and managing skills necessary to succeed as a consultant, she has organized them into one helpful volume called The Business of Consulting: The Basics and Beyond. Biech considers all phases of a typical consulting business, from start-up and attracting new business to subcontracting and balancing personal and professional responsibilities. An accompanying disk includes various documents and worksheets described in the text. --Howard Rothman

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Covers the "business side" of consulting quite well.......2007-01-09

This book is great for learning about how to run your consulting business. It's assumed that you already know about to do the consulting work, so the focus is specifically on managing the business. It covers topics like financials, record keeping, billing, managing client relationships, and marketing efforts.

On the plus side, the book offers a lot of creative ideas to the reader - especially when it comes to managing client relationships and marketing efforts. A potential downside, however, is that many people may not feel comfortable with a lot of the ideas...many are kind of "off-the-wall" and would really require just the right kind of personality to be pulled off well.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for All Consultants.......2005-10-05

The subtitle of this book should be "What You Always Wanted to Know About Consulting But Didn't Know Who to Ask." Elaine is very generous in sharing her knowledge and experience with colleagues and potential competitors. The book is straight-forward, practical, and immensely readable. It covers everything from what to carry in your briefcase to what ethical considerations you may face. Not just for new consultants, this book has something for everyone in the profession.

1 out of 5 stars Very light on content.......2002-11-01

This disappointing book skirts the issue of consulting and instead uses generic advice about building any business. It consists of laundry lists, not usable advice. Bottom line: This will not help anyone build a consulting business.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read!.......2002-10-17

One of the difficulties of independent consulting is the loss of colleagues to "bounce ideas with." Elaine's book helps to fill that gap! It's extremely easy to read, full of information, very practical, and well-organized! Elaine talks about lifestyle changes as well as business considerations-the complete guide for a new or an experienced consultant!

1 out of 5 stars It's a waste of money even for beginner.......2002-05-02

Sure this book is only for beginner or outsider of Cosulting business. But then, for the price of this book, I would rather buy a much cheaper book but with more useful information and ideas - such as Consulting for Dummies. The book is full of motherhood statements and it is more liked written by a grand mom and she called herself consultant; But come on, Consulting is a highly skillful business that require structural, systematic yet creative thinking. Overall, I think this book is a waste of money for experienced consultant. While for beginner, the reader will risk the wrong impression that it's this easy to win a consulting work - highly unlikely in a complex and competative world.

        Book Description

Semantic Web: Real-World Applications from Industry offers a glimpse into the opening door of semantic technologies by means of concentrated examples of semantic applications in real business environments. For quite a while, there has been evidence from academic research and early industrial prototypes that semantic technology can help humans and machines substantially in accessing and using the unprecedented, and exponentially growing, amount of information that the World Wide Web provides. Now semantic technology is moving from academic and industrial research into real products and applications. This book provides a series of case studies which demonstrate how real benefits can be derived from the adoption of semantic technology in popular business domains, such as telecommunication, B2B integration, healthcare, education, and others.

Semantic Web: Real-World Applications from Industry summarizes state-of-the art expertise and practical experiences from outstanding technology showcases. This volume was written as a joint effort of leading experts in the field of semantic technology from various backgrounds and countries, including industry, academia, and government agencies. It combines a detailed description of the challenges and technical solutions with a discussion of the actual results and a wealth of lessons learned, which will be invaluable for future investments into semantic technology.

Semantic Web: Real-World Applications from Industry was designed for industry professionals and researchers interested in the current state and future of semantic technology. This book is also suitable as a secondary advanced-level text or reference for students in computer science.
