Book Description

This is the same diagnostic system I use with my own clients and with the financial advisors I train. So, going through it will be like having me sitting beside you, whispering in your ear, guiding you every step of the way.”

–from Your Complete Retirement Planning Road Map

Corporate pensions are disappearing. Social Security is in trouble. And the sizable postwar generation is reaching retirement age. With the futures of millions of Americans at stake, Ed Slott, the country’s foremost retirement planning advisor, now offers expert advice on weathering the perfect storm of financial instability that looms on the horizon. Your Complete Retirement Planning Road Map, Slott’s most essential and accessible book yet, provides clear step-by-step directions through the highways and byways of IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and other major accounts.

In five helpfully focused sections, Slott combines crucial facts with interactive checklists and questionnaires (those he uses with his own clients) to teach investors and beneficiaries alike the best way to save and to maximize an inheritance. Inside you’ll discover

• My Account Inventory: an overview of every retirement savings account you own, whether you’re thirty or sixty-five–from what it is and where it is to who gets it and how, plus where to put important data for easy access and where to store your essential documents (hint: not in a safe-deposit box)
• The Account Owner’s Care Solution: how to properly fill out retirement account beneficiary forms so that whatever amount of money is left in your account after you’ve fully enjoyed retirement will go to whomever you choose and not to relatives who suddenly pop up out of nowhere
• The Account Beneficiary’s Care Solution: what to do when you inherit so that you won’t lose any of the tax benefits and other opportunities your benefactor has created for you, or make a mistake that could wipe out an inherited fortune that took years to build up
• The Special Issues Care Solution: how to handle the out-of-the-box issues that could affect you or your beneficiaries (e.g., life events such as divorce or incapacity; tax issues for unmarried partners; decisions about trusts)
• The Follow-up Care Solution: how to keep your planning on track and make adjustments when circumstances change, and how to determine whether your professional retirement advisor is really up to the task of preserving and protecting your money
• Plus: the most up-to-date information on tax laws, including the Pension Protection Act of 2006, which provides major new retirement incentives that you can take advantage of

Your Complete Retirement Planning Road Map is an indispensable planning solution that is sure to become the standard how-to on a complex subject that is becoming relevant to more people every day.

5 out of 5 stars A Financial Guide, not a Complete Guide.......2007-02-19

To me the title of this otherwise excellent book is somewhat misleading. It should say something like 'Your Complete FINANCIAL Planning Road Map.' That is, it doesn't go into things like should you move to the sunbelt, or how much money will you need, or medical aspects or any of these other subjects. Instead it is a very complete discussion on the tax issues of investing for retirement.

This book talks about IRA's, and Roth IRA's, and 401(k)'s, and all the other alphabet soup of the tax system in the United States. It is complete and up to date as recent as the 2006 changes to the tax laws.

A major part of the book consists of check lists that you should go over as part of your retirement/estate planning. These also are very well thought out and force you to think about things you would otherwise ignore.

A minor complaint, these checklists are printed in the book. I'd much rather see them on the web or in a CD bound into the book. He says you should fill them in using pencil in case you later want to make changes. I'd like it better to fill them in on a computer and then print them out. Once again, the information is there and more complete than you'd imagine, so you can consider this a minor complaint.

small pamphlet, not a full size book. Rambling and repetitious. Read it twice and couldn't extract any useful information that wasn't available in other sources.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Infinitely Practical--A Must Buy for Every IRA Owner.......2007-01-23

Ed Slott's latest book, Your Complete Retirement Planning Road Map provides the most comprehensive, infinitely practical, hands-on set of checklists I have ever seen for IRAs and retirement plans. Ed, perhaps the best known and most trusted author on IRAs and retirement plans, takes the reader step-by-step through important concepts regarding IRAs and retirement plans and provides the reader with an action plan. Ed really rolls up his sleeves and gets into the nitty-gritty. Another outstanding feature of the book is that Ed has included the best questions--with complete answers--gathered from his clients and readers over the years. Chances are if you have a question, it has been asked of Ed, and you will find your answer. If you buy Ed's book and follow his recommendations, you will be better prepared and better documented than 99.9% of all the IRA and retirement plan owners.

5 out of 5 stars Mastering the complex with simplicity.......2007-01-22

I have personally been studying with Ed Slott in his Master's Elite IRA Advisory Group for the past two years. This new book is a composite of the various modules we have been studying in depth. This book gives an excellent overview in a version to be understood and simplified so that many can be aware of the many issues present in dealing with the one asset that for many represents their largest financial position. I applaud Ed's efforts to make such a text available and appreciate the opportunity I have had personally to train in depth in all of the issues detailed in his book. I would also commend serious readers and investors to his two earlier books my favorite of the two being, Retirement Tax Time Bomb and How to Defuse It. Anyone with a large IRA should be aware and get the book. It could make a tremedous difference in who ultimately winds up the beneficiary of all your hard long years of labor.

4 out of 5 stars Same Rules, Easier to Understand.......2006-12-30

I have read all three of Ed's IRA books. As a Financial Planner, I find the Retirement Savings Time Bomb to be the best. However, if you are slightly less versed in tax code than a professional planner, his newest book is an excellent tool. I strongly recomend it to all (non-financial professional) qualified account owners. Good Job Ed!

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-10-12

I should have just listened to my Aunt Thelma and used the Blue Cheer soap and water combo to keep bugs away. She always said to spray your garden, fruit trees, and around the base of your house and it would keep the insects and spiders away. I feel like I paid $25 for the same advice that I got free from her. My biggest complaint is that the same solutions are repeated over and over and over again. This book would only be 1/3 the size if the author had only put each "tip" in once -- and 1/3 again smaller if he had used a font size that was smaller and left out the dumb drawings. Also whoever proofed this book did a lousy job. Ex.: "If you spray areas where they frequent with a soapy solution you can get ride of them that way as well." Just silly errors that should have been caught and are very distracting. At the price you pay for this book you shouldn't have to worry about typos. Sometimes the same tip is even listed twice under the same category. Obviously I was very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars David Icke is telling the truth........2007-09-11

the reason it sounds so fantastic is that the average person does not have the information. They live in a fog of network television and canned news media - all of which are owned & controlled by the ones behind the so-called 'conspiracy'.

Do the research. It's no story - it's real.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read.......2007-09-11

The conclusions in this book about the nature of reality and how it's all an illusion have changed my life for the best. Icke is very thorough and well documented in trying to support his claims. I couldn't put the book down. Five stars.

2 out of 5 stars Balony.......2006-11-25

Hehe, O.K. I bought the book -- it's not the first time I've thrown away money and won't be the last. After skimming through it and reading this guy's life story, which includes "voices" psychics, and god-knows what else, I can say that I refuse to waste my valuable time reading this clap-trap. Let me suggest that everyone thinking about buying this book, read THIS book first you will be doing yourself a lifelong favor.

4 out of 5 stars IS DAVID ICKE STARTING TO MAKE SENSE?.......2006-09-18

It's easy to simply reject someone who says the world is run by manipulative reptilians posing as world leaders; that George Bush, Tony Blair, the British monarch, and many other prominent people are blood-drinking child-abusers who engage in secret rituals unknown to the rest of us. Despite David Icke's seemingly outrageous claims, I found some logic as well as interesting and possibly credible theories in Tales From the Time Loop. In contast to his earlier books, he has shifted his beliefs in a more positive direction. It sounds a lot like he is embracing spirituality and the immortality of the soul. He accepts the existence of the astral world, a place or state with many levels occupied by beings with numerous agendas and understandings of the universe. But he rejects reincarnation as separate lifetimes ("there is no time") or that life in a human body is a journey toward perfection. In Icke's version of reality, there is no karma, no need to make up for evil deeds or mistakes. Everything is an illusion. What is missing in his framework, in my opinion, is purpose. Why does reality exist? Why are we here playing these games?

What about the evil reptilians? Why are they here and what do they want? Icke finally gives us a reason the reptilians must sacrifice humans and drink blood. He says they have a problem remaining in this dimension and they need human DNA to keep from shifting back to their own dimension. They sometimes do shapeshift into reptiles, and he quotes numerous witnesses who have seen them shift. Icke takes pokes at the frenzy of interest in the bloodline of Jesus (theories that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and had children). He says the so-called Jesus bloodline is just part of the reptilian bloodline. In a previous book, he claimed there was no historical Jesus, so I don't know what to make of this new belittling of the Jesus bloodline.

But the repitilians seem to fade in importance behind his major thesis, that we are all participating in a Time Loop in which history keeps repeating itself. Everything in the Time Loop (our apparent universe as well as the astral world) vibrates. Only Oneness does not vibrate. David found a parallel to this idea in the movie, The Matrix, which obviously impressed him much more than it impressed me. I found the Matrix movies silly stories thinly built around special effects. Despite his admiration for matrix-buster Neo, Icke criticizes the media for being purveyors of falsehood that serve the Illuminati agenda.

Speaking of history, I do not think David Icke is anti-semitic as some of his critics charge. He is absolutely correct in defending anyone's right to express their point of view, even if it is repugnant and can be proven wrong. David is not a holocaust-denyer, but he does think people have a right to deny the holocaust. If we had an intelligent, educated populace, there would be few takers for theories like "there was no holocaust" that are so contrary to tons of evidence. He also explores an interesting idea about the origin of today's Jewish population. There is some evidence that the Ashkenazi Jews (those who come from Europe) were at least in part related to a non-semitic people called the Khazars who converted to Judaism in 740 AD. They occupied territory that is mostly in modern-day Turkey. The significance of this (according to Icke) is that it refutes the idea that present-day Israel was an ancestral home to its current Jewish inhabitants.

But as the book progresses, Icke sounds more like many New Agers in proclaiming that human consciousness will shift into higher gear and can defeat the Illuminati. He gained some new insights, he says, while taking a psychoactive drug, ayahuasca, in Brazil. This was his first foray into mind-altering drugs and he tells us he received a great deal of information from a voice in his head. I believe him (this is not an uncommon experience) but I recognize that we do not know the origin of these voices. They may originate within ourselves, or they may come from spiritual entities outside ourselves. In either case, we cannot be sure what they tell us contains any actual truth.

Why bother reading Tales From the Time Loop or any of David Icke's books? I don't know if there are any actual Illuminati plotting to take over the world, but I do know the world is full of evil, with its endless wars, unrelenting poverty and destructive competition for precious natural resources. Icke's critics can be pretty hard on him, but I think his message deserves a hearing. I want to live in a world where David Icke can say and write what he believes and where I am free to say and write what I think of what he believes.

5 out of 5 stars No room left for cowards..........2006-09-07

This is a great and challenging book, not for the faint of heart. David Icke presents a vision of the world which is radically different from the one which we are spoonfed from cradle to grave. Think of the courage it takes to get up on the world stage and bring forth this kind of information. People who pan Icke (and others in the truth movement) are nothing more than staid cowards, unwilling to integrate and adapt...worst of all, unwilling to listen and think these things through. Bottom line: read this book and pass it on to friends; time is running short and our freedoms are eroding before our eyes. It's time to wake up and rise to our true and magnificent human potential...and Icke is here to help on us our way.

5 out of 5 stars Allergy Self-Help Cookbook.......2007-06-06

I truly thought my doctor was nuts when she asked me to try eating the "elimination/allergy diet"...no wheat, dairy, egg, corn or sugar. This cookbook saved me totally. Good recipes and a great springboard for developing the lifestyle to feel better. It is also called an "anti-inflammatory diet", and has helped my fibromyalgia significantly. Money very well spent. Highly recommended for those trying to change eating habits, feel better or lose weight.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading Name for your book.......2007-05-13

I was VERY disappointed when I received your book, the title indicates that the recipes are wheat-free....etc. In actuality some of the recipes are wheat free, some are milk-free, some are egg free, some are corn-free, etc. I was (past-tense) excited when I saw your book, as my daughter and I have to avoid these ingredients plus many more and I was tired of "making up" recipes on my own, I thought finally someone has done the footwork for me, however I was sadly mistaken, I have to modify theses recipes as much as my own, so I'll continue on my own.
Signed,

Disappointed in Wyoming

5 out of 5 stars Great for multiple food allergies.......2007-02-19

I am allergic to 11 different foods. This is the best book I have found so far to deal with MULTIPLE food allergies. This is not a book for the person with one or two allergies. This is the book for those of us who have to read every label every time. This book is worth the investment for those of us who really have a very difficult time eating at any restaurant and really need to cook at home. The recipies are diverse and include possible subsitutions and are tasty too!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-01-10

This book has alot of helpful information as a beginner with the food allergen subject.

3 out of 5 stars Best for food 'sensitivities' and rotation diets.......2007-01-02

This is a good cookbook, with many excellent ideas and some very interesting information. Unfortunately, Marjorie's desire to help every special dieter creates a book without a specific focus. She attempts to cover all types of food allergies (milk, egg, soy), intolerances (gluten, milk), sensitivities (including a rotary diet plan with food families chart and alternatives for things as obscure as black pepper), and even addresses issues on environmental allergens and toxins. No easy feat I must admit.

If your primary concern is food `sensitivities', this cookbook appears to be an excellent resource for rotary / rotation diets. I would recommend it for this. Yet, the subtitle declares `free of ALL common food allergens.' This is a big promise, and regrettably not one that it kept. Here are the author's claims:

Gluten-Free - There are many gluten-free recipes (breads, cookies, etc.) included and even a great section that explains all of the different flours and how they can be used. However, several of the recipes call for spelt, kamut, or oat products, which all contain gluten.
Wheat-Free - I did not view any recipes that contained wheat specifically, but I believe spelt and kamut are in the wheat family and a problem for many who have an allergy to wheat.
Yeast-Free - Of course, the quick breads, cookies, and other common dishes are yeast-free, but the few `yeast' bread recipes that are included did call for yeast.
Milk-Free - Many of the recipes call for goat milk, goat cheese, sheep milk, soy cheese (not specifying that most soy cheeses contain milk protein), and/or feta cheese (from a cow). The author fails to point out that most people who have a cow's milk allergy will also have a problem with goat milk, and some may even be more allergic.
Sugar-Free - This book is not suitable for someone who has sugar-free needs. Agave nectar, maple syrup, date sugar, and honey are required in many of the recipes. She does include a nice section explaining these natural sweeteners.
Soy-Free - I spotted soymilk, tofu, miso, and tamari sauce throughout this book.
Egg-Free - The quick breads are made with a natural alternative, and the author offers many great suggestions for replacing eggs in recipes. Nonetheless, a few egg-filled recipes did sneak in, including Macaroons and Eggs Florentine!
Corn-Free - I didn't spot any corn in this cookbook, though I am not certain how common of an allergen this is.

Other Diet Comments:
Vegan - One reviewer said this book is great for vegans, but I highly disagree. I don't think any vegan would want a cookbook loaded with recipes for turkey, chicken, pork, fish, venison, lamb, and even rabbit, simply because it has some good vegan recipes in it. Most cookbooks do.
Nuts - Marjorie does not claim that this book is nut-free, but she does state `free of all common allergens.' Tree nuts are one of the top 8 food allergens, but this book is loaded with nut-filled recipes. It did appear to be peanut-free though.
Fish & Shellfish - This is also a top 8 offender. As it is easy to prepare bread, dessert, rice, and other dishes without these ingredients, the book is mostly fish free, but there are specific fish recipes.

For those who have multiple allergies (such as the dreaded milk, egg, nut combo), picking and choosing recipes from this cookbook, could be a chore. I have had this cookbook for a couple of years now, but have only trialed a few of the recipes (with decent results). I would like to sample more, but I have found it too time-consuming to locate recipes that are suitable to my diet, that sound good at the moment, and that I have the ingredients on hand for.

The Allergy Self-Help Cookbook offers many great concepts and what sound to be some delicious recipes. If the author could either break this rather large collection (yes, I think there are 350!) into smaller focused cookbooks, create an index for the book that tells which recipes are specifically gluten-free, soy-free, milk-free, etc., or simply include allergy information after the title for each recipe (so that you didn't need to scan all of the ingredients), it would be a huge improvement.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2007-05-16

This immediately has become my number one entertaining book. I opened it for a dinner party and was able to prepare appetizer through dessert - to rave reviews. I love her "do ahead diva" instructions on how to preprep, she does it in several places along the recipe, so you can choose where you want to finish prepping.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know for a Party and Beyond.......2007-05-13

This book is a MUST for anyone who likes to entertain. It's packed with delicious recipes, but what I really love is that the book is full of great tips for food preparation as well as what you can do in advance. I love that! I never know how long you can freeze something, or if you should add the layer of cheese to the casserole before you freeze it or after you thaw it. Diane has all the answers! I liked the book so much that I bought 3 more -- one for my sister, my mom and my sister-in-law. I give this book 5 stars. Trust me, you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Best cookbook ever.......2007-03-09

Thank God for this book (well, Diane Philips should get some credit, too!). It is PACKED FULL of great recipes, plus tips for doing them ahead of the party so that the hostess isn't totally frazzled by dinnertime. It has variations of many of my favorite standby recipes, plus new ones with updated flavors. Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Party Food.......2007-03-08

Long my idea of the perfect recipe - make ahead - now amassed in a fabulous collection. But, Ms Phillips goes so much further with guides for every aspect of your party. Honestly, you'll feel empowered just thumbing the pages.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for parties!.......2007-02-24

I have used this book for everything from a quick salad dressing to cornbread to easy do-ahead recipes for entrees. The recipes are accessible, healthy, and sophisticated enough to please gourmet as well as comfort food eaters. I find myself referring to this book more than my other cookbooks for everyday cooking, including my Betty Crocker and other "general" cookbooks. Of course, it's perfect for stress free entertaining and holiday time as well. Worth every penny...

Book Description

Sarah and Tanya are long-time friends and self-described "lazy vegetarians" whose love of animals made them want to completely eliminate animal products from their diet. Their decision to "go vegan" was a challenge not only to their palate but to their way of thinking about food and nutrition. With some imagination and a little know-how, the transition to a vegan lifestyle can be painless. And as Sarah and Tanya demonstrate in How It All Vegan!, vegan food is fabulous food, full of flavour and all the nutrients you need.

Two-colour throughout, the book's chapters include entrees, soups, sauces, breads, salads, and desserts; there are recipes for blue banana muffins, mushroom barley stew, chocolate cheese-less cake, tofu jerky, and vegan versions of ice cream, mayonaisse, and Sloppy Joes. There are even instructions on turning other aspects of your life vegan: recipes for cosmetics, hair products, pet treats, and household cleaners.

With its campy '50s style illustrations, unusual concoctions, and cool, punky sensibility, How It All Vegan! will tempt readers to animal-proof their diet and join the Vegan Empire.

Currently, over 110,000 copies have been sold.

Now in its 12th printing.

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes and tips for vegans!.......2007-09-15

This book is amazing! I recently converted to veganism from vegetarianism, and this book has helped me immensely, with deciding what foods to buy, as well as broadening my palate with meals I create cheaply. There are also really great tips in the back of the book, like vegan face masks, a vegan way to clean your toilet, it's really helpful! For a beginner or a skilled vegan, this book is ideal - the recipes are delicious, easy, and readily-available, even for a college student like me!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the 3.......2007-07-10

I have The Garden of Vegan and La Dolce Vegan in addition to this one and this one is the most used in my house. This book has the best entree section compared to other vegan books because they are all great and easy to make. This also contains my favorite vegan sloppy joe recipe and black bean burgers that actually stay together and don't crumble. Harvest herb bread, rhubarb bread, and cinnamon raisin bread are also favorites. Brownie and cookie recipes *** YEAH!!!!!! I have been a vegetarian my entire life and enjoy using vegan recipes, though I am not a vegan. This is the best vegan cookbook I have used and may even be the best cookbook I have, which includes the vegetarian ones.

3 out of 5 stars Okay but not essential.......2007-04-21

This cookbook is merely okay. I really wanted to love it, but frankly, the recipes are kind of boring. The salad section is a bit of a waste--too long and too much repetition. Way too much space on what to feed kids. I was also put off by the overly cutesy writing style, to the point where I felt like I was in middle school ("We're having a sushi party tonight. All right!" "My Gerry--he's so very saucy!") Also, a plethora of references to friends, cousins, aunts, etc. Okay if you like that sort of thing, I guess. I'm sure Sarah and Tanya are earnest, well meaning vegans. But I am unimpressed with How It All Vegan. If you are shopping for a vegan cookbook, I would recommend Isa Moskowitz's Vegan with a Vengeance. The recipes are more inventive (but hardly difficult) and she writes with a great Brooklyn attitude!

That said, this cookbook has a section of non-food recipes that look rather interesting (e.g. homemade skin toner, cleaning agents). I will probably use those recipes more than the food ones.

2 out of 5 stars Not so great..........2007-04-21

I've used a lot of the recipes in this book, and I've come to the conclusion that it's not that great. I followed everything to exact specifications, so has my girlfriend, and there's always a problem with it. The breads come out too hard or flaky, the chili is REALLY bland (I ended up adding my own ingredients and cooking it much, much longer than instructed, and it came out great) the "easy breezy cheese sauce" is nasty, the pancakes aren't that good, the sauces/dressings aren't good. The only thing I actually think came out good is the whip cream.

I've gone online and found much better recipes for free. So, there's really no reason to buy this book, unless you need some ideas or reference to create your own meals.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best for beginners but not bad.......2007-02-15

This cookbook has some good recipes, but a good deal of it is too involved for day to day use, unless you're the type of person who lives to cook. Many of the recipes use imitation cheese, which always turns out tasting second rate. Others require many different ingredients but use only a little of each, so you have to figure out what to do with all the excess you didn't use. In addition, some of the recipes such as the hummus and miso soup include modifications that make them more complicated than normal for beginners. Overall, not a bad cookbook, but it can be frustrating for beginners or people who don't generally like to cook.

Book Description

A customized, drug-free program that attacks the biochemical roots of depression -- with a 90% success rate

Not all depressions are alike. And despite the attention given to Prozac and other drugs, there quite literally is no magic pill. Instead, writes Dr. Gabriel Cousens, someone who suffers from depression needs a customized, individual program, one that attacks the personal, biochemical roots of the problem.

In Depression-Free for Life, Dr. Cousens shows how to heal depression safely by synergistically rebalancing what he calls "the natural drugs of the brain," using a five-step program of mood-boosting substances, vitamin and mineral supplements, and a mood-enhancing diet and lifestyle. Grounded in cutting-edge science, yet accessible and safe, this book shows how to regain your optimism and energy through balancing your own biochemistry.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars very lucid, clear and helpful.......2007-07-22

Dr Cousens has brought to awareness natural methods to address mental health issues and illnesses that should be considered first line of defense before the option of pharmaceutical drugs that are still experimental and can alter brain chemistry in ways that we are still learning about. Natural methods have fewer risks, side effects and deserve to be given a chance before more drastic measures....

3 out of 5 stars If you are depressed, it's a tough read.......2007-03-15

I read this book and tried to follow along while I was experiencing a pretty bad depression. I was hoping to find some immediate steps I could take to alleviate my symptoms, but by the time I got to the end of Part 1, which is supposed to help you identify your personal deficiency that may be causing depression, I was completely frustrated and had no idea what category I fall into based on all the redundant symptom lists that are given (for example, if you feel tired all the time, does that classify as "fatigue", "lack of energy", "apathy", or "exhaustion"?).

The author is obviously really knowledgeable on the subject and I am glad I read it. I have taken from it some things I am going to try and hopefully they will help. I just think it should be presented in a way that is more in tune with its intended audience...a depressed person who feels tired and has trouble concentrating! There is SO much technical information and background about brain chemicals, supplements, hormones, etc., that by the end of the chapters, I had no idea which "type" I was or what steps to take.

I'm sure if I were feeling better, I'd get alot more out of all the detail...but then again, why would I be reading the book if I were feeling better?

4 out of 5 stars Lots of unique info.......2007-02-12

This book contains lots of info - especially about amino acids, vitamins and other supplements. It has a number of self tests to help you determine what deficiencies might be contributing to your depression. It could be organized a little better - you have to read the whole thing carefully to determine dosages and contraindications, etc. I stopped using my porescriptions anti-depressants and followed this book to a T and I feel better than I ever have before. I also used it with a friend when they were stopping drinking (alchoholic) with much success. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of helpful dietary information.......2006-02-22

This book makes a good reference for the different uses of amino acids that can help depression. It also details the different types of depression so you can find your symptoms and individualize your treatment. The dietary information is sound. A well written how-to that will help a lot of people.

5 out of 5 stars it worked for me!.......2005-10-03

If I had my own TV show, this is the guy I would invite on to be my alt med guru.

Fortunately, Dr. Cousen's advice is sound, affordable, and beyond fad-tv material.

I had annoying, and serious, vertigo side effects from prescription antidepressants and turned to this book without expecting much. Detailed analysis of different biochemical deficiencies (what's good for you may not work for me) were interesting, and a program I followed based on what I learned from the book proved surprisingly effective. Yaaayyyy!

I wish I could force this book on anyone I know on prescription AD's, serious side effects and all, but alas some people will not consider anything not blessed with FDA approval & Pfizer (or whoever). But if you are open to a natural method, I think this book must be the most comprehensive and informed specifically on depression.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......2006-12-12

Reading the correspondence from prisoners working to pursue meditation and yoga in their search for peace just knocked me out. We think in our ordinary (free) lives that we struggle with our spiritual paths, and in theory it might be the same work, but the inspiration from these stories puts a whole new perspective on the seeking. An excellent, touching, sincere and fascinating book.

5 out of 5 stars "We're All Doing Time" is Indescribably good.......2006-07-06

I thought that this book would be interesting and informative, but was was much better than I expected. It not only answered all of my questions and gave wonderfully clear instructions for the practices, but I actually had several "Ah Ha!" moments while reading it. I rate this book as one of the most important books that I have read in years.

5 out of 5 stars The letters are the best part........2006-06-08

I saw a t.v show on the prison ashram project and decided to check out one of bo's books. The first 2 chapters are very short but full of great information even though they are your run of the mill dime store wisdom found in many places. If you're just getting started then you really don't need any further teachings other than what is here. If you've been goofing around for a while then the third chapter is just great for the questions and answers and honest dialog. There isn't any preaching ... just simple, to the point answers to many questions that plague the average meditator. A great book, thoughtful read and a happy purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A singularly profound spiritual testimony.......2005-08-11

Bo Lozoff is the director of the "Human Kindess Foundation" and his writings, workships, and tapes have helped countless numbers of men and women to deal with the limiting effects of selfishness, fear, anger, and addiction --as well as incarceration where the barriers are ones of cold steel bars and high cement walls. He has now distilled his observations and insights in We're All Doing Time: A Guide For Getting Free, with a foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. We're All Doing Time spells out the philosophy of the Prison-Ashram Project, which strives to give spiritual community and help, without mandating specific religious dogma, to those suffering in prisons. Others work to reform prison systems, and the author commends them highly; but until great changes can be wrought for the better, the philosophies in We're All Doing Time are meant to make prison physical and spiritual life more bearable. Black-and-white photographs and true stories of individuals and inmates searching for peace and meaning in their lives make We're All Doing Time a singularly profound spiritual testimony.

5 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with this one.......2005-08-03

I read this book prior to recommending it to a relative who is serving a life sentence in a California prison. I had heard of the book, but was not willing to recommend it without reading it. If you are looking for a "user-friendly" introduction to spiritual development, you can't go wrong with this one. Written in a very clean, easy to understand, and loving style, the book is the one I would want to have were I facing a life sentence.

Book Description

How can the poorer countries of the world be helped to help themselves through freer, fairer trade? In this challenging and controversial book Nobel prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz and his co-author Andrew Charlton address one of the key issues facing world leaders today. They put forward a radical and realistic new model for managing trading relationships between the richest and the poorest countries. Their approach is designed to open up markets in the interests of all and not just the most powerful economies, to ensure that trade promotes development, and to minimise the costs of adjustments. Beginning with a brief history of the World Trade Organisation and its agreements, the authors explore the issues and events which led to the failure of Cancun and the obstacles that face the successful completion of the Doha Round of negotiations. Finally they spell out the reforms and principles upon which a successful agreement must be based. Accessibly written and packed full of empirical evidence and analysis, this book is a must read for anyone interested in world trade and development.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Enlighting book.......2007-01-21

Read it. It did taught me a lot about economic premises discussed in class. Prof Stiglitz is great. The book addresses topics I was supposed to hear in other business courses but this book really nailed it

3 out of 5 stars One of the better critiques of complete free trade.......2006-07-23

Stiglitz is certainly a critic of the free trade ideology but his arguments are much more intellectually robust than I see from either the economic nationalists like Lou Dobbs or the anti-globalization movement (and those two are distinct among themselves). He doesn't favor developed world protectionism, and actually makes a few strong points against it. However his proposals do respond to some of the claims of the anti-globalization movement even if he doesn't accept their quasi-Marxist outlook in total.

Stiglitz favors global trade agreements and infrastructure but he would change the rules. Basically he suggests a regimen where wealthier countries (measured either by GDP in the aggregate or per capita) would give preferential access (i.e. little or no trade barriers) to poorer nations. Thus India would get access to the U.S. market without reciprocating on American products but India would have to give access to Uganda without getting equal treatment in return. The poorer nations would have more leeway to employ subsidies and tariffs and have longer transition periods to liberalization but the long run goal would still be fewer barriers to trade.

Stiglitz makes a very strong case that even if one accepts that trade barriers are a bad idea, the developed and less developed nations aren't on a level playing field when it comes to arbitrating trade disputes, simply because of size.

He also suggests intellectual property issues and a common set of investment rules should not be part of global trade governance. Those are interesting points of view, certainly intellectual property enforcement is spotty in the third world already. He suggests that if investment agreements are wise for developing countries they will implement them on their own. He gets a little vague on this point because he suggests that labor and environmental standards should be WTO functions if investment rules are, which makes one wonder if really believes investment rules should be in or out. On the flip side, he also thinks allegations of currency manipulation should not be part of the agenda.

The dogmatic free traders like Milton Friedman contend there is never any net benefit to protectionism; Stiglitz obviously departs from this point of view in that he selectively endorses it for developing countries. It is hard to argue with much of his logic, I just wonder if the developed world would act as altruistically as he suggests they should. The reluctance of the larger economies to part with farm subsidies is an obvious obstacle, on the other hand what he suggests is already the case in manufactured goods.

Stiglitz deserves credit for moving beyond the simplistic and often disingenuous claims from the developed world who are just engaging in rent-seeking behavior. His proposals would involve governments in aiding people who are genuinely less well off rather than coddling inefficient industries in the developed world.

5 out of 5 stars A radical new trade model.......2006-07-13

The authors state rightly that trade policies should be designed to raise living standards and to integrate developing countries into the world trading system. Global poverty (more than 2 billion people live on less than a dollar a day) is the world's most pressing problem.
They say rightly that the developed countries have to date received the lion's share of the benefits from previous trade negotiations. Those ought to do more for the developing countries. The adage should be `help-my-neighbor', nor `beggar-my neighbor'. Right should persevere over might.

Therefore they want to put a radical new trade model on the table of the Doha Round: the Market Access Proposal (MAP). Their model is simple and straight:
All developing countries can have free access to all markets with (1) a larger GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and (2) a larger GDP per capita.

Besides MAP, they give also recommendations for the upcoming trade negotiations, of which many will be extremely difficult to realize, even partly: liberation of labor markets and unskilled services, promotion of labor mobility (immigration), elimination of agricultural subsidies, no technical provisions (like rules of origin), no export subsidies, no tariffs, no non-tariff barriers (dumping duties), no currency exchange manipulations, no arms sales, no briberies, pro-generic drug policies, elimination of secret bank accounts.

They also want better access to financial means for developing countries, institutional reforms (a less costly accession mechanism) and a new international trade tribunal.
By the way, trade negotiations should be about trade, not about intellectual property rights.
Generally, they ask for more democratic media, which are actually controlled by a few rich conglomerates.

Any trade agreement that differentially hurts developing countries more or benefits the developed countries more should be considered as unfair.

J. Stiglitz and A. Charlton have written a most necessary book. The implementation of their simple and radical proposition should constitute a big leap forward for the developing countries and concomitantly for global international trade.

This book is a must read for all participants of trade negotiations and for all those interested in the future of mankind.

N.B. For a viewpoint of the South I recommend Walden Bello's `Dilemmas of Domination'.

5 out of 5 stars very interesting - a great global economics intro.......2006-04-19

You don't have to be an economist to realise that the World Trade Organisation is failing the poorest countries. But this book is a compelling explanation of what is going wrong, and the best case yet for change.

Stiglitz is a Nobel Laureate in Economics who served in Clinton's White House and was Chief Economist of the World Bank. He was there when much of the current trade policy architecture was being built and he has a lot of insights to impart to readers. This book does not disappoint.

The chapters on the role of neoliberal economic policies in the growth process are especially interesting. Stiglitz takes a nuanced view, arguing that the introduction of market forces is important, but that, in the presence of other distortions, countries will face important challenges to make sure that globalisation does more harm than good.

This book is full gems of economic reasoning and a great introduction to some of the big questions of global economics and development.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for those interested in Fair Trade.......2006-03-18

Generally I think it is another great book from Stiglitz. The MakePovertyHistory campaign, Bono, Bob Geldof and their Live8 concerts has shined a bright light on trade justice.

The World Trade organisation literally has the livelihoods of billions of people in its hands. This book shows how the trading relationships between rich and poor countries have become so unfair that the rich countries are creating more poverty. Free trade does not automatically lead to poverty eradication or environmental sustainability. In fact, if done wrong, it can increase poverty and cause harm to countries at different stages of development.

If you want to understand the issues behind fair trade and the problems facing people in poor countries, this is an excellent place to start.

Jeff Cox provides the information new gardeners want in Perennial All-Stars: how to produce a garden full of healthy, attractive, low-maintenance plants. Cox, the enthusiastic host of HGTV's &Grow It!, has selected 150 perennials, both flowers and grasses, that grow well in North American climates. Each double-page plant entry tells how and where to grow the plant, how to propagate it, and a list of ideal planting partners. In addition, each entry displays a quick-glance sidebar that includes ideal hardiness zones, blooming season, size, color, light and soil requirements, and a substantial list of plant sources (detailed in the back of the book). Cox further assists the beginning garden planner with useful groupings: "Fragrant All-Stars," "Deer-Resistant All- Stars," "All-Stars for Full Shade," "All-Stars 4 Feet or Taller," and so forth. It's in no way intended to replace a complete plant encyclopedia, but novices will be happy with the excellent selection and informative, friendly format of Perennial All-Stars. --Barrie Trinkle

Book Description

No longer must you waste your time or money browsing catalogs or wandering the aisles of your local garden center. How often have you ended up with perennials that dont live up to the breathtaking photos that convinced you to buy the plants in the first place? Garden expert and HGTV host Jeff Cox takes the guesswork out of shopping for perennials by selecting 150 of the most beautiful, top-performing plants based on attributes such as bloom time, ease of care, disease resistance, and fall color. A Perennial Plant Finder helps you find the ideal plants for your garden whether you live in Palm Springs or Portland. Youll also find suggestions for hard-to-plant conditions like heavy shade with acid soil or drought-prone gardens with alkaline soil. This all-star lineup is pictured in 260 full-color photographs that show each plant plus how each looks in garden combinations with other great plants.

5 out of 5 stars great for gardeners.......2007-05-17

I am really enjoying this book. It has given me a lot of good ideas for my garden this summer. I already have some of the flowers it lists, and I agree they are winners. An excellent book for beginning and experienced gardeners looking for new flowers for their yard.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and informative.......2006-08-19

Many of my gardening books are useful for referencing the occasional problem or plant profile, but "Perennial All-Stars" was an engrossing read from cover-to-cover. The author has a great deal of enthusiasm for his subject--so much so that I think he picked more than 10 'Top 10' perennials out of his favorite 150.

That's okay. I admire his devotion and his knowledge of the perennial flower kingdom. His 150 all-stars also purport to be easy to grow and maintain, which is what I was looking for when I decided to add to my garden this fall. Unfortunately the author was so persuasive, I'm going to have to dig a new bed to fit in all of my choices from his book.

If you have a rough idea of the plant you're searching for, the front of this book is cross-indexed by various perennial characteristics such as 'spring blooming,' 'deer-resistant,' and 'full shade.'

Each of the perennials that was chosen for this book, is described in the following sections: an overall description and photograph of the plant; how to grow it; propagating the plant (useful especially for the more expensive or hard-to-find perennials); the right site for growing the plant; and other plants that go well with it. A 'spotlight' section summarizes the USDA plant hardiness zones, season of bloom, height x width, color, light requirements, soil requirements, place of origin, and where the perennial and/or its seed can be purchased.

The author tried to choose perennials that would flourish in all of the U.S. hardiness zones, but there are some exceptions that can't take the heat and humidity of the Deep South, e.g. peonies, or won't live through a very cold winter, e.g. Broadleaved Bear's-Breech.

"All-Star Perennials" is very useful and interesting. Just plan on doing some digging when you do read it.
