Misleading book from an "expert" who cheats people.......2007-07-29
I didn't like this book because it rehashes a lot of the same stuff in his first book, thus the materials is not very "new". "Ted Tesser's New Book" is a case of the Emperor's New Clothes. The author runs a supposedly reputable business in Florida trying to "save traders money". I followed the tax advice in the book on setting up corporate entities and ended up caught between a rock and a hard place, because the book did not include critically important details (perhaps intentionally?). When I needed more specific details, the authors' company tried to force me to pay $350/hour charged to a credit immediately over the phone for advice if my CPA was standing there to help me make sense of it all. The phone call was already costing me $100/hour. At that point I knew I was dealing with a sheister. I would not recommend this book or getting involved with the Waterside Financial to anyone. The New Trader's Tax Solution: Money-Saving Strategies for the Serious Investor, 2nd Edition, Updated
Good beginner book.......2005-08-13
The book is really good. The reason why I gave it only 3 stars is that it doesn't cover the complex stuff I am looking for. And it mostly target to small trader. This book will do you little good if you able to make over million dollars a year from the market. The book does not mention much about asset protection. As with any trader, the only asset is their cash, and I believe the author should put more work into this section if a new version is on the way.

Customer Reviews:
Can get a perspective through overview of strategy.......2007-10-15
This book is very helpful to get a understanding about strategy.
Because of this book offers quick review whole about strategy.
Brief and to the Point.......2007-10-02
The book is a concise exposition of the most important concepts and techniques in strategic management. The book provides a sound overview of strategic management, focusing on basic concepts and their application in the real world of business. The book covers all the essential topics in strategic management such as environmental scanning, industry analysis, strategy formation, competitive strategies, strategy implementation and global strategy.
Those interested in strategic management and corporate strategy will find the book useful and handy. This is particularly the case with the busy executives who need a concise book packed with all the useful concepts that can be applied in formulating strategies in their organizations.
All-in-all, a short but readable textbook filled with ideas and strategies to help managers become more competent, effective and valuable to their organizations.
Didn't do me any good........2007-01-09
It was a book required for my MBA course, but it speaks to what seems like common sense. Read the Wall Street Journal if you want some insight on real world strategy.
An overview of concepts used in Business Strategy.......2005-12-08
This book is a good overview of the several approaches used in the discipline of Business Strategy. It covers most of the current approaches and concepts.
Usually the major concepts are presented with sufficient detail so that it is possible to understand the basics. The concepts and tools related to strategy are put in the context that is most applicable, i.e., scenario analysis is part of Chapter 2 - Change and Uncertainty in the External Strategic Envinronment.
A good thing is that the book reduces "the marketing or hype" around some tools or concepts to its real dimension or importance, helping the practioner understand its applicability in real world situations.
I would say the book is a good introduction on the topics covered and can be used both as a starting point or an overview by an experienced person that has been exposed to a particular set of techniques and concepts and wants to complements his/her knowldedge.
Good reference for modern strategy theories.......2002-12-17
Thin (140pages), but comprehensive introduction of strategy theories from SWOT to Porter's thoughts. Best to capture the concept of Strategy.

Customer Reviews:
A GOOD PRIMER.......2006-09-21
I agree with the post that said this book is an excellent primer. It's not for experts but for beginners. From a beginners standpoint it covers covered calls, protective puts and a combination of the two, which is called a collar. These are conservative strategies, as I understand it. Mr. Jardine also tells the reader to trade with the trend, that is, use bearish strategies when the market is trending down and bullish strategies when the market is trending up, and gives examples. The book is a quick read and I recommend it highly for those who have never gone through a bear market and want to know what they can do in one.
Makes one think about the risks of equity investing.......2002-08-22
I have in my hand a book of the same title by the same author (self-)published in 2001 which I received at an investment sales seminar, but it only has 110 pages. The one sold here may be a better copy-edited version.
While the slim volume does not provide a comprehensive view of stock trading, it does offer some interesting thought provokers among its six chapters:
- Emotions of investing in a bear market
- The trend is your friend
- Stops
- Buying puts
- Shorting stocks
- Collars
As you can see, most of the chapters deal with investing in a bear market, although reading through them reminds one of the perils of stock trading even in a bull market. Frankly, I wish I had received this book earlier, before my own trading account melted down by over 60% from the peak in spring 2000. The chapter on collars (which the author calls "free insurance" on a stock, but it's more complicated than that) was an eye opener. If I had followed the advice offered in the book, I would probably have cut my losses by half. I have started using collars and stops, and they worked well to protect myself from the big market drop in July.
This book is written in plain English and is easy to read and understand. While I don't know if the author is a successful investor himself, I'm glad his book has helped me somewhat.
Good primer to stock and options trading.......2001-11-19
This is a good introductory book for those who are new to stock and options trading. While it does not cover all topics concerned with stocks and options (such as spreads, straddles, LEAPS, and tax strategies, to name a few), it does present a number of important trading strategies in plain English and without all the technical jargon and gobbledegook found elsewhere.
I think that it would be possible to trade in stocks and options with only this book in hand, but for those who are interested in further and more detailed study in options, the publisher has included a decent list (albeit not exhaustive) of related titles at the back of the book.
While the strategies explained in this book are primarily for a bear market, I think that they could be used in a bull market, as well, with just some minor "tweaking."
Of course, one must realize that no strategy, whether presented in this book or in any other, is foolproof. One will not make money every time with every strategy. There are bound to be some losses due to situations and circumstances beyond one's control and no matter how well one can read the charts. However, I would recommend this book as an important addition to any trader's (or investor's) library.

Book Description
The classic source for the technical analysis discipline now brings readers up to date in techniques and technology
Now, in this second edition of the classic text, expert Thomas Dorsey shows, step-by-step, how to create, maintain, and interpret your own point and figure charts. He explains how you can use your findings to track and forecast market prices and develop an overall investment strategy. Perhaps most importantly, he helps you develop confidence in the market and take decisive action at the appropriate time, rather than reacting after the fact. Dorsey also highlights new developments in the field and incorporates the use of recently developed software to track any market using point and figure methods. Written for both new and experienced P & F chartists, this updated edition of a technical analysis classic brings point and figure charting into the Internet age.
Thomas J. Dorsey (Richmond, VA) is President of Dorsey, Wright & Associates, a registered investment advisory firm that uses point and figure charting as its main source of technical analysis.
Customer Reviews:
Point & Figure Charting for STOCK TRADERS ONLY.......2007-05-03
Thomas Dorsey does a great job at explaining (in the first 50 pages) how the Point & Figure Chart is created, as well as some basic 'forms' that the charts can take. I read some of the reviews of this book thinking that as a Futures/Commodities trader (early stage/beginner) I would learn alot about Point & Figure Charting for Futures/Commodities. I was wrong. There are no more than 3 pages in this book regarding Commodities, and only insofar as they are underlying indicators for stocks that rely on commodity prices. So, if you want to learn about Point and Figure Charting, this is an ok book. There may be others out there that are better, as that aspect of this book served its purpose for me....which is P&F Charting APPEARS to be an excellent methodology for Trend analysis (big picture) for Futures/Commodities. However, if you are a Stock Trader then this book may have much more relevance to you. Not a bad book, just not appropriate for Commodities/Futures Traders.
In Defense of the Presentation.......2006-10-23
I find it hard to accept the reviews I have read about this book having poor explanations of the P&F concept, or that they are available elsewhere. Mr. Dorsey's book is first rate. I read this book when it was first released, and I find myself using it as a reference tool quite often. Mr. Dorsey's explanation of the NYSE Bullish Percent chart and how to use it and the Relative Strength charts in conjuntion with your stock selection is as plainly presented as if you were having a conversation with the man.
When you consider that he also has weekly podcasts that help explain how the P&F charts are used, I consider Mr. Dorsey to be THE authority on the subject of Point&Figure charting and this book is an excellent source for learning how to start P&F analysis.
Technical Analysis De-Mystified - Not.......2005-10-18
The other review on this date (wentraub) is not a book review but some random thoughts on investing. The Dynamic Asset Level Investing model is not even in the book but a paid service from Dorsey's website!!!!
How can Dorsy be one of Wall Street's saviest minds when his is in Virginia?
PnF charting is only one of many tool available to a Technician.
Technical Analysis De-Mystified.......2005-10-18
Technical analysts are becoming an endangered species on Wall Street. Major firms have long favored a fundamental approach emphasizing a nuts and bolts approach to company revenues, use of capital, and innovation. Scores of fundamental analysts closely follow individual sectors of the economy, scour SEC filings, and comment on daily developments pertaining to individual companies. Meanwhile a smaller cadre of 'technicians' churn out charts, graphs, and statistics that follow the ebb and flow of investor capital. Recently two well known full service brokerage firms decimated their already small contingent of technical analysts and another firm let go their star technician.
Academic studies on the efficiency of the markets to digest news and quickly reset the market value of securities have long questioned the value of Wall Street analysts to forecast future prices. If news is unpredictable, by definition, and the prices of securities adjust immediately, what is the point of a forecast. These studies have been particularly harsh on technical analysis. Technical analysis may not have helped its cause with a coded language of triple tops, head and shoulders patterns, Fibonnaci retracements, etc. It all begins to sound more like the Occult than analysis. This book blows away a lot of the smoke.
Tom Dorsey has given us a straight forward (if somewhat breathless) introduction to his method of technical analysis. His X and O charts record trends of buying (demand) and selling (supply) in the market. It is this dynamic imbalance, he contends, that is the primary determinant of value in the marketplace. The tendency for these trends to repeat over time represents the psychology of investors to buy or sell at critical junctures. For Dorsey fundamental analysis is useful in determining what company stocks should be owned. Then it is the role of the technician to determine when to buy and sell. Fundamental analysis identifies good companies. Technical analysis identifies good stocks. Good companies do things well. Good stocks make investors money.
The value of Dorsey's work is to help investors find sectors of the economy and securities that may be due for a reversal of fortune after extended periods of under or out performance. The bottom line is that he has developed a useful toolkit for the investor. A look at his Dynamic Asset Level Investing model [12/2004 - not in this 2001 book] that recommends areas to allocate assets (small capitalization stocks, Latin America, natural resources, energy, etc.) seems prescient just about a year later. Using ETFs (exchange traded funds) to develop a portfolio based on Dorsey's model would have inevitably led investors to a chunk of the best returns available for the period. This book should certainly be read by all investors who want an introduction to technical analysis and a better understanding of one of Wall Street's savviest minds. You may not want to be on the other side of too many of Tom Dorsey's trades!
Bait for online service.......2005-06-25
The book is too wordy - in fact the same information is more concisely presented and available for free at DWA website. To follow the method described you need to become a paying member of DWA. A free 2 week trail is also available at the site. This allows you to findout that to really understand and apply this method you need to take several of the $150 classes that DWA also provides. Also, the online service is really geared towards stock brokers (investment advisors).
Use the online course - its faster, cheaper and better.
Average customer rating:
- A bit long winded & pretentious but still valuable
- Lots of big words and no explanation of what they mean
- Very insightful

In e-Business 2.0, Ravi Kalakota and Marcia Robinson present a survey of how the processes of business have changed as a result of computer-assisted communications, data storage, and data analysis. They explain recent technological advances--and those that may take place in the near and middle future--and explain how companies that sell products and services might put them to profitable use. With an emphasis on companies that sell things to large numbers of consumers, the authors argue convincingly that information technology isn't an end in itself, but a tool that can facilitate valuable changes in business processes.
This is a book for managers and organizational planners, but it commits none of the sins typical of such books. It neither oversimplifies technical matters nor serves as a mere platform for catchy phrases and obtuse illustrations. e-Business 2.0 is properly focused on the big technologies on which successful companies will capitalize. Kalakota and Robinson argue that it's a good idea to supplement live salespeople with self-service sales facilities, such as those on a Web site. They call this a part of selling-chain management.
The authors also explain how inefficiencies in the selling chain can make it prohibitively expensive to provide built-to-order products, which consumers increasingly want. They then present solutions: Internet and customer relationship management (IRM and CRM) software, sales automation systems, and proposal-automation tools. In each case, they cite specific examples (usually companies and products), enabling readers to dig deeper into specifics if they want. Similar attention goes to enterprise resource planning (ERP), trend-spotting tools, and half a dozen other technologies. Read this guide as you think about how to make strategic changes in your company's operating practices. --David Wall
Topics covered: Recent developments in technology that change the way companies do business, particularly in terms of determining and fulfilling customers' needs and interacting smoothly with vendors. More broadly, this book deals with sharing information efficiently among all relevant parties inside and outside an organization. Technologies covered: Internet sales infrastructures, customer relationship management (CRM) suites, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, knowledge management tools, and data warehousing and analysis products.

Customer Reviews:
A bit long winded & pretentious but still valuable.......2007-01-20
I came at this book from the point of view of a web designer. It is, unfortunately for me, written more for the business person (ie: divisional manager / executive within a mid to large sized company). It argues quite convincingly that the various applications & systems within a business need to be integrated for it have be a successful ecommerce presence. However it gives no technical insight into how this is to be achieved. The authors simply drop names of companies that provide software that can do whatever function they are talking about in that chapter. (Or at least, companies who were doing this several years ago, when the book was published. The book is really is a bit old now to be completely relevant on the topic of the present business environment).
I get the feeling that an executive or divisional manager reading this book would not understand half of what the authors are talking about. At least that has been my experience with business people at this level. They really don't have much of a grasp of the working of websites, or of software applications generally for that matter. They simply leave it all for their IT department to take care of.
From my experience, most execs reading this book would just be looking to be able to pick up enough of the jargon to be able to sound like they know what they are talking about. Customer relationshiop management, supply chain management, front office, back office, etc, etc... I think the book achieves this result. Perhaps that is why it had such hype around it. However the authors could have written a much slimmer book & achieved the same aim. They ramble on at length about the significance of each issue before actually broaching it. I don't know how many times a sentence like "the company that fails to do this will soon be left behind!" is used in each chapter. After a while, it starts to get a little ridiculous.
There is alot of rhetoric, which you eventually just start to switch off to, & look for the next actual point to arrive. (Fortunately, the points themselves are quite engaging).
There is also a section at the end of each chapter called "memo to the CEO". This revises what was dealt with in the chapter. I just found this "memo to the ceo" scenario kind of ridiculous too. It seems to suggest that only CEOs are going to be reading the book. Memo to AUTHORs, isn't that limiting your readership somewhat to assume this? Or to shape the material in this way? What about addressing us mere mortals too. We paid our money at the bookstore counter too!
Despite the heavy-handed prose (a bit of sensible editing would have done wonders for the flavour of the book) it is an interesting theoretical study of what ecommerce SHOULD be about. I would recommend it on this basis.
The book is basically about apllications integration, & how this can lead to cost savings (for the company) plus better experiences for customers. They can do more, faster, at lower cost, & with greater quality assurance.
It is interesting, reading it now, to see some things the authors mention have become the norm in ecommerce today. So they were clearly right on the general significance of this issue of integration.
You just have to switch off to the grandiose nature of their style occasionally. It really seems akin to an Anthony Robbins book at times ("You can do it! You can be the best. If you choose to succeed. But you must act. Many will fail. Will you be one of them?" etc, etc) I am exaggerating there, but if you read the book you will see what I mean.
Lots of big words and no explanation of what they mean.......2005-04-09
After seeing all the glowing reviews of this book, I'm beginning to wonder if it's just me. I've only gotten through the first 3 chapters and already I've run into a multitude of terms that are not explained at all. My class uses this book for its text and I have to answer discussion questions about brand-intensive vs. capital intensive, disaggregation and reaggregation (Dictionary.com didn't even have 'reaggregation' in its database), etc. It sure would be nice to include a glossary of terms used. I'm really dreading the rest of this book.
Very insightful.......2004-02-07
This book still holds up rather well given all the changes that took place in the e-business space in the last couple of years.
The authors really seem to understand this space. I heard Ravi Kalakota speak at a seminar in Cincinati. He was fantastic. He is very articulate about the trends that are shaping the e-business and e-commerce landscape.
Highly recommend this book to those who want to understand the basics of e-business.
Techie vs. Business point of Review.......2002-08-21
I really liked this book. I am doing an MBA at the moment in the Michael Smurfit Business School and was trying to get an example for an eBusiness Model. The choice in the end came between Weil's Book 'Place and Space' and Kalakota's, but, there was no choice. Even though I have the greatest respect for Weil. Kalakota was pragmatic. At first as I staggered through the earlier chapters I thought, 'Hello' ... have you heard of dot.con ( we are talking about techie stuff...)and then it clicked , literally , this guy , or should I say lady and gent, have it all sussed. All eBusiness models should be based on sound business principles.
'e' has changed the principles but it is still the same message. Incorporate and get on with it. That's the message and do it as soon as possible. That's the reality! Business has not changed, just the tools, and the speed ...But beware once you do it, you have to keep on doing it, to come out on tops, it'a a reiterative cycle, OK babe...
A good text, a powerful understanding........2002-07-12
I read this for as a text for a course in ECommerce and I enjoyed the candid dialogue that the author used in this book. The examples and ideas are not outdated. Not a how to book, but more of a these are the main business concepts and opportunities you can benefit from, book.
Really enjoyed it.

Bargaining for Advantage - Excellent - .......2007-08-09
Bargaining for Advantage by Dr. Shell is a well-researched and easily accessible presentation of the negotiation schema. A must for anyone in business and every one who will ever have to negotiate anything. A must book for your lifetime.
I bought three copies and gave away two as gifts.

This is the play book to use at the negotiating table. It's fast and easy reading. It will definitely give you a distinct advantage. It will give you the tools and strategies to help you get MORE of what you want while simultaneously showing the other side they got more than they wanted. This eliminates one side feeling they got short changed. Go for the heart not the throat. If you really want to raise the bar take his course at Wharton, like I did. Then you will really have the edge..
PS I have been buying this book for friends and clients since I took the course
Cost of book ~ 10.20 + shipping ... ROI 3000% in 3 WEEKS.......2007-05-27
3000% ROI in three weeks. That is for simple things like auto repair work. At work the potential ROI is even higher. Heck. I haven't even finished the book. I still have much more to learn.
This book is literally a steal. Anbody that fails to read this book is working at a major disadvantage in the new American and international culture.
Excellent..........2007-05-21
As a MBA student & poor at negotiations(:(), I needed to improve upon my negotiation skills...my prof suggested me this book....I found this book full of required information and interesting negotiation stories in the history...though I am not a big reader, I loved it...
A MUST if you do any negotiating -- who doesn't?.......2007-02-13
To many of us the term 'Negotiation' is an abstract word. Prof. Shell converts it to a concrete term with all the steps involved to accomplish the results one desires. Reading the book will give you the information you need -- practicing the steps will give you the skills needed to get what you deserve at the bargaining table. Remember, "We don't get out of life what we deserve, rather what we negotiate."

What a surprise! With over 30 years of non profit fundraising, leadership and capital campaign consulting experience, I expected to gain little from this "how to" book which I was given to review. Boy, was I wrong.
Step by step, the authors outline and expand upon the key elements of a capital campaign; from determining whether or not your organization is ready for a campaign, to the best ways to celebrate and evaluate its conclusion.
I appreciated the amount of detail the authors included and their emphasis on organization, planning, leadership involvement and communications. They explore the basic process and then give in depth coverage of each step. In addition to sharing their own personal knowledge and expertise, they gathered much of their material by interviewing friends and clients who also had extensive capital campaign experience. They made the book more interesting, and dramatized the points they wanted to make, by the inclusion of short vignettes and quotes by volunteer and professionals, from actual campaign experiences.
Among the important subjects covered by the book are: how to select and use consultants, building the case for support, conducting a feasibility study, creating a campaign management plan, prospecting and prospect research, team building and leadership development, techniques of solicitation, campaign materials and public relations, events, thank yous, recognition, and much more. They even have a trouble shooting guide which focuses on what to do when things go wrong.
I highly recommend this handbook for volunteer leadership and staff alike (whatever their level of previous experience) who are considering a capital campaign. It is a book that should also be part of the libraries of campaign consultants. I have to admit that I picked up several great new ideas and techniques from reading the book.
Keep in mind that this is a "how to" book and will continue to be of value as a reference tool. The table of contents and index are complete and excellent in their detail.
I felt the authors could have put more emphasis on and expand the section on feasibility studies, or as I like to call them, pre-campaign assessments. Too many organizations try to avoid this important process thinking that they already know they need to know. They feel the pre-campaign study will take unnecessary time and resources. A good study not only sets the stage for a successful capital campaign and determines a realistic goal, but also provides invaluable information about the way the organization is perceived in the community, potential for major support, and extent to which leadership and staff are ready or capable to do what is necessary for success.
Organizational culture, leadership styles, personality management and what is often referred to as organizational politics are other areas which I felt deserved expanded coverage by the authors. Human factors, organizational history, and communication styles are all addressed in the book but are not given as extensive or in depth presentation as is warranted.
In summary, this book not only meets, but exceeds its very appropriate title: Capital Campaigns-Strategies that Work.

Could be Better.......2007-06-22
The text is very heavy on the theory and provides a good background in the subject matter. Less pompous writing style could make it more readable. There are numerous spelling errors and instances of the words confused (tack instead of track, stricture instead of structure). Maybe upcoming editions will be better.
Really disappointing and useless........2005-10-02
This book is really disappointing. When the it was delivered at home, I thought the box was empty: the book is as thin as a magazine!
The content is very theorical, completely useless for executives.
Maybe OK for students who have no clue at all about what strategy is, but definitely useless for executives.
Good Book Overall.......2005-09-24
This book paints a good landscape of the evolution of strategy management over time. Even though the book has only 6 chapters the material is somewhat dense. I found myself doing a lot of re-reading to understand the details. Its extremely comprehensive though if you have a strong background in strategy and/or are pursuing your MBA and its you last semester.
If you're the average joe blow who's trying the understand the basics of strategy management I'm sure there are easier books out there you may want to read.
Excellent Guide.......2001-08-25
The concepts are well illustrated with tables and charts. Though I find the case studies a bit outdated, the strategies discussed along with it provides a clear picture on how the industry is structured and different management style. The reading is excellent and not fill with nonsense like other textbooks.

The very best pricing manual.......2007-09-23
I bought a second copy of this book after loaning it to too many people to know who had had it last.
The book is not light reading, is highly technical and has more than a little math to comprehend. But, it is worth it.
The strategic thinking is very focused.
If you are stuck on how to price your product or how to combat price competition, read this book.
Looking for guidance/framework on how to price our products ..........2007-03-08
We have the challenge of taking new products and services to the marketplace and really were looking form some guidance on a place to start. The area we are working in is really developing a new market as well. So we were wondering "What Price do we place on these product and services?"
We could not afford the experts on pricing (aka Strategic Pricing Group now part of The Monitor Group). And were looking for a place to start. All research including reviews from Amazon pointed us to start with this book. To myself and our endeavor, it the first 3 weeks of owning the book, I have read several chapters multiple times and the foundation framework on pricing is shares has already proven to be worth many times the price of the book.
On top of it, it is easy to read. Thanks to the people who took the time to make this book.
Great Book.......2007-02-18
This book is a great guide to the topic of pricing. I'm an MBA student and I believe students as well as professionals can benefit from reading this book. It contains structures and frameworks to work out a tailored pricing strategy and they all make sense. Lots of good examples from business practice illustrate the application of the theories.
The book is relatively quantitative for a marketing book, which I find great because there is no argumentation based on psychology and belief, but on quantifiable parameters - one can see the consulting practice of the authors.
What the book pretty much lacks is a citing of new academic research studies of the topics discussed. There are extensive references, however.
All in all a great book to newcomers in pricing as well as experienced pricers.
Excellant........2007-02-11
This is one of the best books in pricing. My Pricing professor recommended that I buy this and said that marketing managers regularly refer to this book in practice. This is a great buy.
