Very tiny book.......2007-05-10
Very tiny book. I was not expecting such a small book. Very expensive item for its size.
Book arrived with a grease stain on the cover!
Handy Reference, Perfect for Training Seminar.......2007-01-13
If I had to give a 1-2 day seminar on the subject, this would be a handy handbook. For that purpose, it should be used, not as a general reference on lean manufacturing.
If this review was helpful, please add your vote. Thanks.
The Lean Manufacturing Handbook.......2007-01-09
I purchased this handbook to be used as a quick reference guide and as part training aid when I talk to my Clients in the manufacturing sector. It has completely satisfied these requirements and the other factor that appealed was its true "pocket" size.
Lean .......2006-08-28
Delighted with this book. Firstly it's size is great as when you are on the Gemba (Floor) you can have this in your back pocket and referance it when needed. It goes through the various concepts of Lean in an easy format and then explains the techniques. As a Lean BlackBelt myself, it's a great tool to use in every day situations.

Great for the in dept look at a well run warehouse........2007-09-23
Great for the in dept look at a well run warehouse. Has all the details to help you start or clean-up an operation and help it run like a well oiled machine.
This is a must...........2006-10-30
This book is a must for ANY professional working in the finished-goods/products Fulfillment/Distribution world. If your work and responsibilities span anywhere within a FC/DC, you should pick up this book. For less than one hundred bucks, you get one of the best written, concise handbooks I have ever encountered.
It's very important to note that this is not just a dictionary-like handbook, but rather a book that is actually easily readble and enjoyable. It is not for novices, but for anyone with some level of experience, the book comes to life and will help you build depth.
I work for a major e-retailer that disbributes products to end customers. Having worked many years here and picking up most of the know-how from experience alone, I am now questioning why our learning dept doesn't have the insight to make this book a "required" manual for all when we first started. It is excellent and provides great explanations and applications .
Buy it. If I ran a DC/FC, this is a must read for all my mgrs and jr mgrs.
Great warehousing and material handling book.......2003-05-03
This is the best book I've ever found on material handling and warehouse storage. Though a little pricey, this book has content that makes it well worth the cost. Extensive detail on material handling and storage equipment. Also has separate chapters dedicated to small item warehouses, case-pick warehouses, and pallet warehouses.
Anyone designing a new warehouse or redesigning an existing one should read this book.

Customer Reviews:
Needs an update... but still a must for every RFID professional.......2006-05-19
Book provides a solid foundation for RFID physics and the fundamental concepts. It gets really boring at times because of its staright forward approach and technical jargon. There is no other book in the market that capture RFID in such a depth; however the book is requires a immediate update to incorporate EPCglobal standards and other recent developments in the RFID industry.
RFID (RF Coupling in the Near field).......2005-04-07
RFID is a well written book. It covers hardware, regulations,
and RFID applications.
What I like about RFID is that it explains rF devices
in the near -field. Almost every other book I have read is about RF far-field.
The knowledge is useful in understanding the sources of noise in lab equipment caused by high frequency induction fields.
(These signals go right through the usual metal enclosures.)
Its useful.
Good collection of concepts.......2004-04-16
This book has a very good collection of most of the concepts related to RFID and is very useful especially for beginners in RFID. I gave only 4 stars as I was dissappointed not to see any examples for any or almost all the concepts explained. For what it costs, I think it makes sense to add some examples liked to some important concepts.
Great book for understanding the concepts and applications.......2003-06-04
If you are an Engineer looking to understand the history, technical aspects, implementation, standards and details of RFID systems, this book provides an excellent introduction for you.
The chapters are well laid out and paced. The author explains the most common devices and systems available in the market, their technology and concepts quite well. Most of the RFID related standards have been covered along with relevant examples. The author covers such things as the hardware design specifications for devices, software requirements, and some basic RF concepts that are required to understand Transponder and Receiver designs.
If you need specifics about recent products however, you might want to research for other sources of information because this book does not cover vendors and products in detail. For readers without technical background, the book introduces the concepts well; but some content might not be relevant because of the [technical] nature.

good reference.......2006-04-11
I wanted a book to help me improve my SQA system. I bought this book with great expectations. It ended up being a great reference for the CSQE test, but added little practical value to my practical purpose. It is a general overview of several topics that include Quality, CMM, CSQE profile and so on. If you need a reference to study for the CSQE test, this is probably a good book for you.
Valuable information, difficult read.......2003-02-20
I'm working toward becoming certified as a software quality engineer (ASQ's CSQE). While researching learning materials, I found that this book is considered to be a solid overview of the CSQE body of knowledge.
Achieving CSQE requires a certain level of experience. You should be similarly experienced before you read this book. To understand it, you need to have solid experience as a software quality practitioner and exposure to effective software quality processes. This book unabashedly favors defect prevention through effective process, process measurement, and continuous process improvement - all widely considered Good Things - with a thick Capability Maturity Model accent.
The book's perspective comes from its authors' experience producing large, complex software for very large corporations, frequently on government or military contracts. They've worked on these kinds of projects for 20 years or more. Because of government requirements and the nature of these projects, they've watched the need for process turn into process implementation, expansion, and continuous improvement. As a result, they write as though the audience contains people facing similar situations, seldom creating a bridge to quality practitioners in less stringent environments. I'm a 13-year veteran of small software companies, most of which had comparatively featherweight software development processes. Even with my exposure to effective software processes and CMM, I found it difficult to relate to the authors' perspective.
Making this book even more challenging to understand is the authors' cumbersome, awkward text. I strongly encourage the authors to consider investing in a rigorous developmental edit to get rid of stilted structure and acres of passive voice, and to help them express their thoughts in a more expository manner. You'll find yourself reading sentences and even whole paragraphs twice as you try to decode the meaning. I read the whole chapter on Pareto analysis twice, but still didn't understand much of it because the text was so hard to penetrate.
Despite these difficulties, I've benefited from this book. It has helped me build my knowledge and has shown me possibilities I'd never considered. I'm sure it will be an important reference book while I take my CSQE exam. And then I'll be glad to put it on my shelf and let it sit there, because I'm never in the mood for a good text-wrestling match.
Good material for beginners.......2002-03-27
Everybody knows that people usually stumble into SQA. So, once you get started, you will want to have some reference material.
This book is easy to read & understand, and I'd recommend it to people eager to know a little more about Software Quality Assurance...
Good material for beginners.......2002-03-27
Everybody knows that people usually stumble into SQA. So, once you get started, you will want to have some reference material.
This book is easy to read & understand, and I'd recommend it to people eager to know a little more about Software Quality Assurance...
A true classic and the best SQA book for serious SQA pros.......2001-04-18
This book is one of the most comprehensive treatments of SQA on the market. It is a collection of essays that cover every imaginable aspect of SQA with an overall focus to prepare candidates for the American Society of Quality's software quality engineer certification (CSQE). Each author is an acknowledged expert in the field, and each essay is well developed and gets to the essence of the topic.
Although the primary intent of this book is to prepare readers for the CSQE exam, this book contains the building blocks to develop a world-class software engineering process group and/or to move up the capability maturity model (CMM)ladder or achieve a higher level of capability within the context of SPICE (Software Process Improvement Capability dEtermination). In particular CMM and SPICE are 'assessed' levels of capability maturity with no prescribed techniques. This book provides a collection of techniques that will fit nicely into goals for increasing the maturity level of an organization regardless of the framework (CMM or SPICE) that is selected. What I like about this book is that it also addresses in detail how SQA aligns to ISO 9000-3, and the coverage of ISO/IEC 12207 and IEEE-STD-1074 (both of which are important international standards that should be considered as a part of an organization's strategy with respect to CMM or SPICE).
Chapters that provide excellent material supporting CMM and SPICE initiatives are: 1 & 2, SQA-Coming to Terms and How Does SQA Fit In? (a complete picture of the many components and considerations of an effective SQA function); 5, Software Quality Program Organization (great advice on organizing SQA within your company and aligning it to development and project management); 9, Inspections as an Up-Front Quality Technique (how to integrate inspections into a comprehensive, proactive quality posture); 10, Software Configuration Management (essential to any quality initiative regardless of whether the end goal is CMM, SPICE, ISO 9000 or compliance with international standards); 15, SQA Metrics (the foundation of SPICE and higher CMM levels); 19 & 20, Statistical Methods and Software Reliability Management (another set of foundation areas that are essential to SPICE and higher CMM levels).
Other chapters provide material that is specific to preparing for the CSQE examination or implementing any quality program that is focused on software quality assurance. I particularly liked the chapter on personnel requirements, which covered the people and process elements of SQA, and the cost of software quality. The latter gives you ample information for justifying SQA from a business perspective. This material is further augmented by a chapter on effective methods of IS quality assurance, which bridges the applications delivery (development) and service delivery (support and operations) domains.
SQA is not easy to organize and implement. Moreover, it is a highly technical discipline that is more engineering focused than most disciplines in development and operations. As such this book is definitely not for the faint-of-heart. It is intended for CSQE candidates and organizations that have attained some level of maturity and are striving to move higher up the capabilities ladder. If you are looking for a more basic book on SQA I recommend Customer Oriented Software Quality Assurance by Frank P. Ginac. However, if you are an experienced SQA practitioner, heading a software engineering process group, devising a plan for improving capability maturity for CMM or SPICE, or are preparing for the CSQE examination the Handbook of Software Quality Assurance is the best book you can have. It is a classic and earns a solid 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
A basic reference for ISO 9001.......2007-05-21
This book provides a clause-by-clause analysis of ISO 9001 and it contains all the knowledge you need in order to understand this standard and to formulate strategies for compliance. It does not cover detailed theory or procedures for certain themes such as customer satisfaction measurement, sampling, or statistical process control. This should be the first book you read if you wish to implement an ISO 9001-compliant Quality Management System.
Quality Systems handbook.......2007-01-05
The material was just what I was looking for and the service from Amazon was excellent. Received my order ahead of schedule.
Thank you for the excellent service.
Excellent book on ISO 9000.......2006-05-22
"ISO 9000 Quality Systems handbook" is an excellent book on the effective implementation of quality management systems. The book is well written in simple/plain English that should make it easy to follow and understand by any reader.
The book was written by a very experienced practitioner in Quality Management Systems, the author (David Hoyle) having over three decades of experience in the field. This is an indispensable book for those implementing ISO 9000 Quality Management System. The reader will, among other things, understand the difference between the previous procedure approach to the current process approach to quality management. The reader will learn what the ISO 9000 requirements mean, why they are necessary and how to implement them.
The other critical features in the book includes a summary and questionnaire to reinforce the reader's knowledge and understanding as well as comprehensive list of references that should be very useful for those who need to explore the subject more widely.
The book is recommended reading for people involved in the implementation of ISO 9000 for enhanced organizational performance, particularly managers, designers, auditors, instructors and students of quality systems.
ISO9001 deeply explained.......2002-08-22
If you consider ISO9001 more than a paper on the wall then you should read this book. The author tells you what to do rather than a detailed prescription of how to do it. But more important he explains the reason of each ISO9001 requirement. This helps anybody that works with this standard to think about what the rational behind and how does this fit in each business.
Everybody should understand first and implement after and that's the purpose of this book: to deeply understand the standard in order to create or transform your management system (and by this way the quality system) into a customer driven management system
ISO 9000 Quality Systems Handbook 4th Edition - David Hoyle.......2002-04-18
With the introduction of the ISO 9001:2000 standard, a number of publications offering ideas, advice and assistance to anyone who have been charged with implementing quality systems, have made their appearance on the bookshelves. The ISO 9000 Quality Systems Handbook 4th Edition, by David Hoyle is one of the best I have read on this subject. In this 4th edition, David analyzes each section, clause and requirement of the ISO 9001:2000 standard in detail.
David Hoyle has over 30 years experience in quality Management and has authored or co-authored more than five books on ISO 9000. He is also the director of Transition Support, a firm that provides training and consulting in business improvement.
The book is easy to understand and is suitable for students, managers, instructors as well as auditors. The novice ISO practitioner as well as the seasoned ISO 9000 enthusiast will find this book a valuable tool when implementing ISO 9000 quality management systems. For those making the transition from the 1994 version of the standard, this book helps to point out the changes from the 1994 to the 2000 standard.
The standard has changed considerably. In the 4th edition, the meaning of each of the requirements of the ISO 9001:2000 standard is explained in detail and some of the sometimes confusing ISO language is clarified. The author explains why each of the requirements is necessary. He shows how each requirement links to the eight quality management principles on which the ISO 9001:2000 standard was based. The book gives practical guidance on implementing each requirement. This is the strong point of the book.
After introducing some basic quality concepts, the book explains the role, the origins and application of the ISO 9000 family. The succeeding chapters, 4 through 8, correspond to each of the five sections of the standard. This makes it easy when looking for help in understanding and implementing a certain requirement of the standard.
The 4th edition has a summary, a questionnaire that provides food for thought for the reader, and a list of references at the end of each chapter. A glossary and a list of related websites are included in the appendix.
The 4th edition of ISO 9000 Quality Systems Handbook will find a permanent place on your desk. Auditors will find this book indispensable.

Super Disappointed.......2006-08-10
Although this book has a lot of information, it lacks examples and sample problems which help to provide the design confidence I was looking for in an HVAC text. In my opinion this books only value is as a reference for the experienced HVAC engineer.
Excellent.......2003-04-26
This book is one of the best I have come across....the complete guide for HVAC engineers. I have many HVAC books, but this is the top of the tops...well illustrated formulae, diagramatic illustrations, plus controls schedules...discussed issues and common scenarios pertaining to design. Well done Shan Wang
Excellent!!.......2002-04-22
Very complete handbook. Very good ilustrations and up to date. Good reference for HVAC experienced engineers or for students.
I think this book is useful to me........1999-12-04
I have read about 50 handbooks about air conditioning or HVAC system, among all these books I think this one is easy to understand and I can find almost what I want in this book.

Rather than emphasize the characteristics of attacks on computers and networks, The Practical Intrusion Detection Handbook places its focus on the tools, resources, and policies that should be in place to help security administrators do their jobs. It deals with preventing attacks, detecting and stopping them when they occur, and assessing--after the fact--the damage they cause. Throughout, the importance of record keeping is emphasized, particularly that accurate and unmuddled log files are necessary to back up legal charges or support certain firing decisions, if necessary. The business environment beyond the security officer's cubicle is also explored, including how to justify security expenditures to organizational decision makers.
This isn't exactly an academic text, but it's a step removed from the sorts of play-by-play descriptions of attacks and defenses you'll find in Stephen Northcutt's security books--reference is made to those books, as a matter of fact. This hardback volume explains the appearance of various kinds of attacks in broad terms, and shows how intrusion detection systems (IDS) can spot and record the clues (Windows NT security log entries are often used as examples). The text is conversational and liberally studded with bulleted definitions, boxed case studies, and references to Web sites and paper documents. While a working security administrator would probably want to back this book with one of Northcutt's texts and other more detailed books, The Practical Intrusion Detection Handbook makes an excellent choice for a student of business management who wants to be more than minimally informed about the operation of corporate information systems, so as to make better decisions about those systems. --David Wall
Topics covered: Intrusion detection systems (IDS) for whole networks as well as for individual computers, with emphasis on how intrusion detection works and how to configure it for maximum effectiveness and minimum false alarms. Establishing policies and setting procedures, and ways to choose IDS products and justify their purchase to management.

School Books.......2007-01-31
This is a book that is required for my masters degree. It appears to be well organized and written in easy to understand manner.
Great IDS book for experts and beginners.......2001-06-22
This book is comprehensive and very readable. The information is excellent. Mr. Proctor's experience helps show how intrusion detection systems are used in real life through a lot of examples. My company implemented network-based IDS last year and this book really helped us understand host-based IDS. In fact it's the only book I've read on IDS that pays any significant attention to host-based IDS.
On the down side there are a few typos and the product section is a dated because several of the products mentioned have been acquired by other companies but this didn't take away from the really useful information.
I've read the other books on intrusion detection and if you've got Northcutt's book and this one you'll have all the information you need.
Hidden product advertisement.......2001-05-10
In general, Mr. Proctor`s book is well done. Unfortunately, the autor uses many definitions which are not primarily used among ID specialists. These definitions are straight from the handbooks of Cybersafe Centrax, an IDS developed by the author (e.g. Network Node Intrusion Detection; the unique definitions of realtime/batched modes...). Additionally, Mr. Proctors seems to believe that only commercial IDSs are worthy of the professionel ID analyst. He wrongly describes Snort, an OpenSource NIDS published under GPL, as shareware and mentiones it very briefly in 3 sentences. Currently, 80-90% of all detects published on lists like Incidents are detected by Snort sensors ! Since Centrax is a first rate HIDS and only a second rate NIDS, the autor seems to be a very strong supporter of HIDS. This shows clearly through the whole book. The book gives a good overview over todays ID techniques combined with excellent examples. If Mr. Proctor had desisted from placing more or less hidden product advertisement in his book he would have done all readers a big favor.
comprehensive and readable.......2000-10-26
The Practical Intrusion Detection Handbook offers a highly readable and comprehensive presentation of intrusion detection.
Security is a holistic endeavor, requiring coordination of many different components, including technology, policy, practice, behavior, and so on. This trait of security makes the topic hard to grasp, and even harder to explain to non-experts, most of whom think of security as being conferred by a single object, whether a firewall, security policy, or chief security officer. The most impressive accomplishment of this book is that helps the reader apprehend all the different aspects of intrusion detection and how they interrelate.
The book helped me organize my own thinking about intrusion detection, providing not only an overview of approaches and technologies, but presenting the organizational, operational, policy, and financial aspects of intrusion detection.
The book is an excellent complement to other books on intrusion detection, such as Network Intrusion Detection: An Analyst's Handbook by Stephen Northcutt, and Intrusion Detection by Rebecca Gurley Bace.
Paul Proctor "gets it" -- and you should get this book!.......2000-09-18
I am the officer technical lead for a 50-person military intrusion detection operation. Paul spoke at the SANS 2000 Technical Conference on 25 March 2000, right before I gave my own presentation. Even though Paul emphasized a host-based ID view, and I have network-based lineage, I found his insight and experience impressive. His new book demonstrates those qualities in spades. Chapter 6, "Intrusion Detection Myths," is particularly helpful, and his statement that "There is no such thing as a false positive" rings true.
An outstanding feature of the book is Paul's discussion of operational models for intrusion detection. Too many organizations (including my own military unit) believe intrusion detection involves little more than deploying and monitoring sensors. Paul encourages the reader to develop policy, requirements, expectations, legal considerations, and other facets of operation before spending a penny on intrusion detection products.
The main negatives for this book involve a rushed-to-production look in some places. For example, Appendix B: Commercial Intrusion Detection Vendors, is labelled on pages 338 - 346 as "Chapter 1: Fundamentals of Vibration Damping, 1.1 Introduction". Minor errors appear elsewhere. They do not detract from the book's content, and I believe the next printing should correct these typos.
This book has earned its place as the second "must-have" intrusion detection book, in my opinion. The first remains "Network Intrusion Detection" by Northcutt and Novak. While Paul's book is not a manual for front-line operatives, it will help transform your intrusion detection mission into a world-class operation.

Book Description
Presenting an unusual and unique system for Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), this new book is geared for executives who want or need to support quality improvement in their organizations. It is the contributions made by CEO's and upper management that moves the quality process forward, and because of this structure, The Executive Guide to Implementing Quality focuses on the concepts, thinking, and systems necessary for management to operationalize the CQI philosophy.Because quality is not a management problem but rather a problem that involves and requires all people working together at all levels to participate and cooperate, management must engage the organization in the processes that will improve the quality of their goods or services. It is, however, management's job to lead, organize, structure, motivate, and involve the organization in those strategies and systems that will ensure quality improvement. This book explains how to do that.Readers are given a series of exercises and explanations that will help them master the skills and understanding required to identify the management systems they need to support their quality improvement. After reading about a concept, they are asked to contribute to exercises designed to inspire creative and innovative thinking and the exploration of multi-functional options. And because it is the job of management to initiate the quality movement, this book shows how to change defensive thoughts like "that won't work for me" into "what is there that will work here." In addition to showing management how to take the lead in installing CQI in their organization, it also shows how to install the concepts through leadership teams, how to bring out the best in people, how to get top performance from employees and become a world-class organization, and how to reinforce the behaviors necessary to achieve the visions and goals of the organization. This workbook is an easy-and-quick-to-use guide that shows how to identify the support systems that generate desirable outcomes and reinforces them through positive actions.
