5 out of 5 stars A true contribution to the architectural profession.......2006-12-21

Ava Abramovitz has distilled her years of experience as attorney, advisor and mediator into a wonderfully readable book. Her insights and suggestions will benefit every architect who has strugged with uncertainty during contract negotiations. A wonderful addition to our professional library.

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL to say the least.......2006-09-20

Did you know that negotiation can be taught? Most architects do not understand that the rest of the world NEGOTIATES. This book is absolutely ESSENTIAL to the business end of architecture, as well as to life. How do you handle a client who wants full ownership of documents? Do you know what liability that can open you and your firm up to?! Do your key employees know how to negotiate? What about negotiating design? Are all aspects of the design so important that you're willing to walk away from the job, the client and future work; or do you know how to negotiate a win-win situation? This book is for ANYONE in the firm who is in direct contact with the client or other representatives of the client. GET AND READ THIS BOOK! (It will even help with non-professional relationships.)

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Advice for Either Side of the Table........2004-03-03

Contract negotiations are often tedious and frustrating. This book was refreshingly useful because it laid out strategies for achieving desired negotitated results. The book's advice and approach can be applied with profit to any contract negotiations, but it's examples are based on negotiating the complicated agreements between Owners and Architects. I've used it with success to explain the Architect's needs and concerns to Owners and, just as frequently, I've used it when representing Owners to explain why a certain compromise and position in negotiations with Architects makes sense. It is a book with balanced advice on how to negotiate in general and how to do so in particular in the Owner/Architect context. It's many specific examples and suggested solutions to typical negotiation issues have saved me hours of time attempting to articulate to opposing counsel or my clients what the author has already compiled in this book.

I've found its contents so useful that I've taught portions of seminars to Architects, Contractors and Owners using lessons and insights taken from the book. The attendees always have commented favorably on the concrete, practical advice they have learned from those portions of the seminar.

This is a valuable book. If you're involved in any negotiations, especially construction, it is worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars a great book about negotiation and communication.......2003-08-12

I teach architecture students a course on professional practice and have made Architect's Essentials of Contract Negotiation required reading. Of all the sources I've read on this topic, Ava Abramowitz offers the most accessible and well-reasoned explanations of what every design professional must understand about negotiation (and communication).

Abramowitz's many years of experience as a counselor, teacher and mentor to architects has clearly given her insight into how architects think, and she uses this insight to great effect. My students enjoy reading this text (especially Chapters 3&4) because it connects to the way they see the world (and helps focus that vision) in language that rings true. Don't be fooled by the word "Contracts" in the title; this is a great book about architects and negotiation in general and one that I believe all architects should own.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Getting To Yes.......2003-05-03

I am not an architect, but I loved this book. It clearly laid out steps real people can take to negotiate tough problems -- whether construction-related or not. The chapter on communication skills and the one on dispute resolution alone were worth the price of the book. In fact, I would say, as a senior manager of a growing business, that anyone who seeks to accomplish anything important in any business would benefit from the information this book contains. It should be required reading for all.

The subjects covered in this book include those normally studied in an introductory overview course on construction management, and there is enough depth and added material to serve as the basis for a more advanced course, focusing on organizational and contractual approaches to project management, and the related planning and control systems. This new edition strengthens its coverage of the business aspects of the industry, with a section devoted solely to the business methods in professional construction management. The text's practical in-depth approach to the major engineering and management techniques appeals to both students and practitioners alike.

5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile investment for those in CM or GC.......2005-02-19

I used this book in my CM class as a senior in college. The book is pretty comprehensive and a lot of the info didn't make sense until I actually started in the field of general contracting and construction management. Now the info in the book is understandable. I would recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars Good for a junior engineer.......2000-05-03

I got the book's info from my college professor. He strongly recommends this book for me as a junior engineer. I found many useful tables and info from book that mostly I also get from job. Mr Barrie is a consulting engineer and he shared his experiences with us, I felt happy what he did. In the Cve field, most of the things are gathered from experiences. It is quite diffirence from the IT or EE field, it need much time to do it. Mr Barrie give us what he did in recent decades, and I hope we will done better.

3 out of 5 stars Project VB Reference.......2005-07-09

Found the book useful if you know what you are looking for. There is no index, and it is just alphabetical order. Does not have enough examples. One instance was trying to find how to find the project file name using VBA. Do you look up Name, ProjectName, GetName?? You can do a lot of browsing. I ended up getting a lead from the book, and looking up the answer on Google.
Most of the information seems to be the same as is in the VBA help but sometimes it is easier to have a book as a reference rather than toggle back and forth or print out a help screen.
Useful but only as a supplementary source of information.

          Book Description

The approach of this book is step-by-step, from the initial understanding of the business through measurement after implementation of process change. The focus is on major, discrete change and improvement in groups of projects. Information technology is a major theme. Not only do you need a strategic systems plan for the enterprise and key departments, but a strategic plan is also an integral part of designing and implementing improved processes. Measurement is also a theme throughout the book.

With the material in this book, you will be better equipped to do the following: Understand the business and select the most appropriate processes for improvement; assess technology and develop a strategic systems plan for the enterprise and for key departments; create new business processes that work; define a project plan and team that can implement process improvement; market the new process to management and employees; develop an implementation strategy and plan; implement the new processes and measure the results; and, identify and solve problems and issues that arise during the entire project.

1 out of 5 stars A short sighted, oversimplified book.......2001-08-06

The method suggested is practical but its failure to address the fundamental questions of "What is the Solution for?, and Why does it exist (what is its purpose?)" and a few others besides will result in managers making short sighted, short term changes that are likely to cause significant, unforseen systemic problems with time.

Someone buy the author a System Dynamics textbook. In my view its failure to take the complex and inter-connected nature of reality into account and obsession with oversimplified comparison tables/matrices dooms the book to starting the fire at home.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to use, not text-bookish at all........2001-06-15

I used this book for a university management subject (my own idea, there was no set text) and it was great. It's simple to follow and easy to read, and very practical. It helped me understand what Process Improvement is when I had no prior knowledge. It's even just interesting to read cover to cover, it reads so well. I would give it 5 stars, but I haven't actually used it in real life yet!

5 out of 5 stars Will jumpstart your project and save significant time.......2001-05-06

This is the second book I have read by Team Lientz and Rea. It provides a clear roadmap to implementing process improvement, and does so with structure and a rich set of tools on the accompanying CD ROM.

Book: This is a step-by-step guide for process improvement projects. With the exception of the last two chapters (managing the project and examples) the material is sequential and needs to be read and used in order. I rarely read introductions, but in the case of this book I am glad I did because it sets the context and provides questions and a checklist that will prove invaluable as you go through the book.

Critical success factors are the key to process improvement initiatives and this is where the book starts. Next you are lead through the development of a project plan that establishes your direction and the time and resources that need to be devoted. This is a go/no-go hurdle to determine the cost/benefit of a process improvement initiative. You are then lead through the tasks and deliverables of business analysis and technology/process assessment to nail down the "as-is" processes. The section on determining the new process, and the follow-on section on implementation and measuring results are definitely based on best practices. The authors' approach is to the point and complete. I especially liked the chapters on defining and measuring success, and follow-up after implementation - both of which are too often glossed over at the end of a project. Also valuable was the chapter on measuring strategic systems, which is a mature step in a process improvement initiative that is rarely done. Overall: an exhaustively complete set of steps for implementing process improvement that is augmented by a well-written chapter on how to manage the initiative, and a collection of examples and outsourcing and downsizing considerations. This book could be the project manual for an internal process improvement initiative as well as a manual of methods and procedures for a consulting firm.

Software: The array of software tools that come with this book is simply incredible and will cut hundreds of hours off of the planning and execution of your initiative (or if you're consulting company, provide ready-made tools). There are three Microsoft Access databases: Issues, Lessons learned and planning issues. Each database has well-designed data entry screens and numerous reports. There are also 114 Excel spreadsheets that are both numbered by project step and descriptive name. The same numbering/naming scheme applies to the 21 Word documents that are checklists, templates and other artifacts that you will need in order to effectively execute a process improvement project. The authors also provide ten PowerPoint presentations for you to fill in the blanks and present to stakeholders. And, the best for last, there are six Microsoft Project plans: two that illustrate an example project used in the book, two Gantt charts, a resource pool and an outsourcing project plan. Each is not only thorough, but they all are well-formed. By that I mean they have properly developed dependencies and all of the important project views. The first thing I do when I see an MS Project plan is switch from Gantt to PERT view to see if the developed knew what he or she was doing (dependencies that make sense and logical, etc.) The authors do.

This is a complete plan and collection of tools that (1) approaches process improvement in a carefully thoughtout, effective manner, and (2) will jump start any project and save hundreds of not thousands of hours from the planning and execution process. Moreoever, you will benefit from the authors' extensive experience and will do the right things the right way of you follow their step-by-step procedures and heed their advice. Five solid stars and my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and practical.......2000-08-19

Our company has tried reengineering and it failed. A member of my staff bought this book. The method works. We have followed the steps in the book and found them to be easy to use, can be done in parallel, and address many of the problems that we encountered when we tried reengineering. There are many useful suggestions on how to overcome problems such as resistance to change, the role of IT, how to get employees involved, how to make presentations to management, and how to organize and perform the work. It is organized for easy access. The CD-ROM was very useful and saved time since it contains files that help implement the material in the chapters. Overall, this is probably one of the best books in process improvement.

          Book Description

Managing a computer project is a complex process: There are lots of deliverables to produce, plans and budgets to satisfy and different people to report to. Once you've analysed, designed and built (or bought) the system you have to make sure it's
properly tested, documented and settled into the live environment. This can seem like a maze to the inexperienced project manager, or even the experienced one. This book is a practical guide for all project managers.

          * Will enable managers to manage and build better systems on time and within budget
          * Packed with examples, hints and tips
          * Contains many Q&A sessions, indicating common questions and answers found by experienced project managers

          1 out of 5 stars Too general...........2004-01-30

Can't really get any useful information out of this book. For example, has chapters on design, and systems integration. Being a hacker (the target group), I know more about this than the book does. The book however does not really tell how to manage these issues, which is what the book was supposed to be doing in the first place....(book about pm, not about design).

5 out of 5 stars A superb book that gives the ABCs of mgmt of s/w projects........1998-08-24

An excellent book on how to manage complex computer software projects. The book gives the complex steps in easy to follow manner and not only tells you what to do but why and how to do it. An essential tool for any budding Project Leader and/or Project Manager. Even ISO9000 certified companies will find such a book a mandatory weapon in their armoury for tackling issues related to project management.

            Book Description

This book presents a new approach to whole-life costing and risk management for the construction industry. The options-based approach to making decisions has revolutionised the management of uncertainty in the financial world, and this pioneering study applies the same principles to costing in construction projects. This approach offers a significant advance over conventional costing methods as it considers a diversity of possible futures with strategies that respond to events as they unfold, leading to more cost-effective and sustainable investment decisions across all areas of construction.
