5 out of 5 stars Do not take Managerial Accounting without this book.......2007-04-23

This book is what got me through managerial accounting in my MBA program. As a dyslexic mathphobe I was very nervous about taking an accounting class and I was not comforted at all by a professor who only seemed to speak in numbers and a textbook that confused even my friend - the CPA.

This book is clear, concise, and to the point and has tons of exercises/problems with a the answers fully worked out and explained. This book helped me get an A in my class - I highly recommend this book to everyone who needs help in managerial accounting.

5 out of 5 stars Brush up on Part 2 of CMA with this product........2007-01-02

This book is great! It gives you really good examples of cost accounting problems. It includes easy to understand solutions in every chapter. I'm a current CMA candidate and this book helped understand many of costing procedures that I had difficulty grasping in college. Excellent review material!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Effective reminder ... Efficient reference.......2007-01-07

I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!

3 out of 5 stars Good Study Material but Some Sloppy Errors.......2005-03-11

I read this book to supplement my CFA curriculum studies. Compared to other Schaum's books, Financial Management by Shim and Siegel merits a rating of between 3 and 3 1/2.

Four chapters covering topics of Risk Return & Valuation, Capital Budgeting, Capital Budgeting Under Risk, and Cost of Capital were excellent. Other chapters were also well written. The problem sets solidified concepts and were a pleasure to work through.

The authors present the material in a straight forward and easy to understand manner. They provide numerous examples of how to apply the concepts which are truly beneficial.

My main complaint is that there are dozens of errors throughout the book, which indicate sloppy proofreading. This can potentially frustrate readers new to the field of financial management. Calculation errors (!), misapplication of formulas (Do vs. D1) and mislabeling of charts (time lines / cash flows) were particularly frustrating and can be confusing.

I welcome the authors to contact me if they plan to release an updated edition (this book copyrighted 1998). I'll be glad to share with them the errors (at least I think they are!) I found.

It would also have been nice if the authors utilized financial calculators for some of the TVM (time value of money) applications and indicated the keystrokes. A break-out box showing the steps on a Texas Instrument BA-II or HP12-C (two popular financial calculators) would be helpful.

In sum, Financial Management is a very readable book. It is comprehensive, practical, and provides a good depth of discussion without getting too theoretical. Just watch out for the silly mistakes.

      5 out of 5 stars great resource.......2004-11-03

I don't know what that reader below is saying.?? This book was very helpful to me when I used this for a finance class. It's great because it has quizzes/exams, definitions, key terms, a useful index, many many sample problems, and formulas in bold. When you are a busy person and are using this as a refresher, or in conjunction w/ a textbook, it's very helpful to have this paperback workbook to go through for a quick reference.

I've referred to it many times while reading through my textbook, doing homework problems, or studying for a test.

Love the schaum's series - this one in particular has been very useful to me.

      5 out of 5 stars Financial Management y Schaum's.......2003-07-21

This work is a good supplement to the class text. It has hundreds
of solved problems depicted. In addition, the Schaum's covers
international financial management problems which are not always
found in the standard texts. This is a good practice
workbook to reinforce the current text and class notes.
Complex cash flow problems, present value and return on investment problems are shown with accompanying diagrams to aid
in the visual presentation. This text is excellent in order to
prepare for formal licensing exams and other comprehensive
      tests .

1 out of 5 stars lack of knowledge.......2003-05-27

just open the first sample page. you see that the author does not even understand what profit maximization, as defined by economists, is. i would be careful if i were you.

        Book Description

Work more effectively and gauge your progress as you go along! This Study Guide is designed to accompany Weygandt’s Managerial Accounting: Tools for Business Decision Making, 3 rd Edition. Each chapter of the study guide includes a chapter overview, review of study objectives, problems, true/false questions, multiple choice questions, and solutions. Each question is identified by a corresponding text study objective.

Weygandt’s Managerial Accounting: Tools for Business Decision Making, 3 rd Edition gives students the tools they need to succeed, whether as accountants or in other career paths. With a framework in decision-making, it covers all the necessary techniques and concepts for a one semester, undergraduate managerial accounting course. Many students in this course are not accounting majors and will need to understand the big picture of accounting. Therefore, this text provides them with a pedagogy that helps to build their decision-making skills and to understand how to use accounting information to make quality business decisions in whatever major or career they choose.

4 out of 5 stars where is a solution manual.......2006-03-29

anyone know where to buy a solution manual for this?

1 out of 5 stars Poorly organized and insufficient........2005-02-09

This book is poorly organized. It lacks sufficient examples for many of the problems and exercises - what little is available is not sufficiently labeled to be fully understood. The Managerial Accounting Study Guide that can be purchased separately offers very little help. Furthermore, no answers are available in the book or the study guide, so unless you purchase the Solutions Manual (yes, you have to spend more and more to make sense of this mess), you will be lost. As a college student with a 3.9 GPA, I can say with confidence, this book is terrible.

4 out of 5 stars A Big Dose of Managerial Accounting.......2000-04-27

This book is very good for teaching you managerial accounting. I used this book in college and found it to actually be of use, unlike a lot of college textbooks. You could read the chapter and be able to do the exercises at the end of the chapter.

I mean, you know the types of books where they have questions and it's literally impossible to deduce how to answer the questions from the chapter. This book is not like that. It teaches you how to prepare specialized documents for internal business usage. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I felt that the information could be better organized as to make it easier to find.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better! Too few problems!.......2002-12-30

I used it for the cost accounting class and though I found it helpful, I thought that there were too few problems given in the study guide and the ones there did not really reflect on the ones in the textbook. The summaries were well written and an excellent tool for review, but I think the problems should correlate more with what is in the text. I did get A in the class, but I've seen better study guides. Accounting is all in practice, so problems are more important than the terminology.

Like math, the learning process for cost accounting is enhanced by working practice problems and applications. The Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis Student Guide and Review Manual provides excellent cost accounting material with solutions. I would recommend this guide to any student who is serious about learning and understanding the concepts presented in the related text book -- Cost Accounting, A Managerial Emphasis.

5 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide for Cost Accounting!!!!.......2002-08-30

I used this book (a prior edition) in my cost accounting studies and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to learn these methods at an accelerated pace. It is easy to read and comprehend and cuts through a lot of the confusion generated by less salient authors in the same discipline. I recommend this student study guide for purposes of demystifying the realm of cost accounting.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Waste Your Time.......2004-11-19

I purhcased this book for school...DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME on this book. Instructors may love it...instructions in the back of the book say to create certain budgets. BUT, no where in the assigned chapter or even in the text does it provide or explain the type of budget that needs to be created. You are FORCED to go out to the internet and conduct further research. In addition, the book bounces around way too much. You read chapter 6, guess what? You have to go back and re-read chapters 2 and 3 just to figure out what chapter 6 is saying. It's like this all the way through the text book. Then once you read, and re-read and are ready to do some of the problems that are assigned, no where in the text book does it even cover what the problem is asking for! I spent $130 on this book; once I am through with my class I will "toss" this book. It has no meaning and it does NOT teach anything about managerial accounting. Louderback and Holmen must have paid colleges to carry this book...call these folks Accountants? Once you get into the book, it becomes very easy to simply get lost because of the jumping around. If you want to learn accounting, you learn by experience and that is through examples set before you. This book does not provide any of that.

5 out of 5 stars Review of the Study Guide for Managerial Accounting.......2000-02-03

My first Accounting Test consisted of three chapters from my Mangerial Accounting text. My professor was very vague on what material to focus on from each chapter, and did not go over much in of the material in class. I used the Study Guide for the corresponding three chapters, and after taking the test was thouroughly satisfied with my preparation for the test. The Study Guide has multiple choice questions to cover the objectives of each chapter. It has True/False questions to test your knowledge of relevant subject matter. More importantly it gives you extra practice with the Accounting problems. It answered many questions I had after leaving a lecture with my professor. When you do not get and answer correct, the answer guide in the back of the book gives you good explanations of where you went wrong. For example, with the multiple choice questions there are excerpts next to the correct answer.
