Customer Reviews:
The Practical Side of Quickbooks.......2007-09-26
Intuit products, such as Quickbooks, have excellent pull-down Help, among the best written in the software industry. Information is well indexed and clearly written with step-by-step instructions. Quickbooks also has an excellent set of video tutorials, which take about 90 minutes if you view all of them (which I recommend).
But what the Help and the video tutorials can't really do is give you advice on how to use the accounting system works in practice. How do the individual parts fit into the big picture and what are your choices, depending upon your business, for handling things like Vendor Bills, Customer Sales Receipts, petty cash, etc.? Why would you want to choose one method over another?
This is where this book comes in. Ivens answers the very practical questions that everyone has starting out. For example, should I log deposits against customer sales, or should I treat deposits as a lump sum? Why would I want choose one method over the other? This book answers this, and many other practical questions, clearly, with step-by-step instructions for each method and the rationale behind it.
I would highly recommend this book to supplement the pull-down Help and the video tutorials to answer the many practical decision that you will have to make about how to set up your system so that it will work best for you.
QuickBooks 2007.......2007-07-29
QuickBooks is well designed for use by the financial manager of a small business. This "Official Guide" for the 2007 edition is well written and well organized.
QuickBooks 2007 The Official Guide.......2007-05-29
I am only doing the basic functions with Quickbooks including automatic downloads from my bank. I have not used this book at all and frankly have trouble finding what I need. I feel the small guide that comes with the software and the online tuorials and 30 day free 24/7 support is adequate.
A Disappointing Guide.......2007-05-23
Although I haven't gone very far with the Guide, it is generally a disappointment, at least for this Mac user of Quickbooks Pro. (It is possible that the Guide is intended for Windows users, but it was sold by Amazon as a package with Quickbooks Pro for the Mac. While this difference might explain problems with suggested keyboard shortcuts and depicted windows that aren't the same as those in the application, it does not excuse the shoddy index.)
The procedural sections (e.g., Do This First in the appendix) are passible. However even here, the instructions are often incorrect. For example, in Creating Accounts, the Guide instructs the user to press CNTL-A to open the accounts window, whereas the actual keyboard shortcut is Shift-Apple-A. Moreover, the two windows shown in the book to create an account are really just one (different) window in the application.
My major problem with the Guide is my inability to use it as a reference manual for answering specific questions. For example, finding specific pieces of information (e.g., how do I enter To Do Notes as Reminders?) is impossible. Even more frustrating, entries listed in the Index are incorrect. For example, if one looks up "Accrual-based accounting, About", one is directed to p.153; unfortunately, there is no reference to accrual-based accounting on page 153.
All-in-all, for those wanting more information on how to use Quickbooks Pro, I'd recommend using the Help feature in the application or the material on Intuit's web page.

Book Description
“Intuit-approved and loaded with secrets, Quicken Press books provide you with recipes for financial success.” --Scott Cook, Co-founder, Intuit, Inc.
The only official guide to QuickBooks 2004, this information-packed resource teaches users of all levels how to manage their finances for business or home.
Customer Reviews:
helpful.......2007-07-06
I find this book helpful just when I'm about to tear my hair out! It's usually at that point when I remember that I have it. Sometimes I feel the author assumes you know a little more than you do, so you have to go back and track down the subtle steps that take you to the end goal, but overall it has been very informative. Instructions are clear, and I love the "tips" and "warnings" in the margins - they have helped me avoid what could have been some pretty hairy un-fixable mistakes.
Good overall resource but has some drawbacks.......2005-01-16
I decided that January 1, 2005 was a good time to start using Quickbooks Pro for my small business. I'd been using MYOB FirstEdge, but found it was rather limited in some areas. Whenever I think about starting to use new software, I browse around on Amazon for a good book on the package in question. This book stood out as probably a good resource and I was not far wrong. However, I have a couple of complaints. Firstly, the author's instructions on how to enter beginning balances is vague at best. Secondly, her discussion of complex issues such as how to set up Quickbooks for sales tax recording and reporting, is somewhat lacking. The book that came with the software actually does a better job at explaining Quickbooks' rather quirky method of sales tax accounting.
By all means buy this book. It has some really helpful material and is worth the purchase price. But don't pre-suppose that this book is ALL you will need in order to start using Quickbooks efficiently.
Comprehensive Treatise on QuickBooks Pro 2004.......2004-07-30
Ms. Ivens writes clearly, properly, and intelligently on QuickBooks software. The screen shots are legible, unlike those in some other computer books. The index is detailed, and thus useful. I counted only two typos in the 572 pages.
My company, Transpower Corporation (a commercial and custom software manufacturing and systems engineering company in metropolitan Philadelphia), did its first QuickBooks installation in 1999. I purchased Kathy's book QuickBooks 6.0--The Offical Guide; this helped to make the installation go smoothly. It's been five years since, and QuickBooks has changed considerably. So I purchased both of Kathy's current titles, QuickBooks 2004--The Offical Guide, and Running QuickBooks 2004 Premier Editions. Both are excellent and I recommend them to all computer consultants operating in the small business space, which QuickBooks has taken over by storm. (Unfortunately, QuickBooks is not so applicable to medium or larger businesses because 1) there is a five user limit for Pro/Premiere editions and a ten user limit for the Enterprise edition, 2) it does not work with Windows Terminal Server, and 3) it allows only seven custom fields). After reading both books, I've come to the conclusion that for most small businesses the Premiere editions (with their specialization) make more sense than the less expensive Pro edition.
Kathy provides many useful tips in her books. They go way beyond what is supplied in the manuals shipped with the software.
Help pages online - not a guide!.......2004-07-27
I agree with the guy who said it's not a guide. Don't buy if you are confused by Quickbooks interface and plan to learn how to use it properly from financial point of view. To get the guide, simply print out the help pages.
Reference Book Only - Don't buy to learn to use Quickbooks!.......2004-06-06
I bought this book to learn how to use QuickBooks properly after my accountant noticed a few major issues with how I tracked things in my company file. I found this book worthless for a beginner trying to learn how to use the product. Also, it doesn't seem to provide significantly more detail than QuickBooks online help. The only thing I've used it for so far is learning a good account naming scheme...

Customer Reviews:
Not worth it.......2007-07-19
It seemed that each time I looked something up, it referred me her basic book. This book does not stand on its own. To get much out of this book, you also need to buy her other book.
Advance techniques: Not for the commom folk.......2007-03-08
I really thought that this book would give me full detail on how to run Quickbooks, instead it was a highly detailed handbook for a already proficient user who wanted to learn the highly advance tools available. I did not uhderstand any of it and had to put it down. It would have been far more valuable to get Quickbooks for Dummies or the official handbook for Quickbook. I wasted my $25.
Disappointing.......2007-02-17
I ordered this book hoping for some advanced tips or other information about the Premier Edition, but I was really disappointed. Although the book says it's advanced, it's not; and it's not basic either. It mostly a rehash of the QB help files, along with pitches for other books or services by the author. The book also shifts confusingly from chapter to chapter -- some parts are directed at the accounting professional, while others are directed at the business user. Although there is some helpful information in the book, I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone.
No Canada.......2007-01-21
It's amazing that the first book written on this product from a Canadian company has nothing to do with Canadian tax law. It would've been nice if they mentioned that this book is geared towards the US version.
The other thing that surprised me was the yellow paper that makes the book look and feel like it was written in the 50's.
There are many references in the book advsing you to read another book for the answer.
Definitely not what I expected as a new user to Quickbooks.
Intermediate to Advanced level book.......2006-12-22
Pay attention to the sub-title of this book -- This book is a guide to the Premier Editions. That is, it assumes that you have some knowledge, indeed expertise in the basic use of QuickBooks. This might be considered an intermediate level book, or perhaps the second volume in a set. If you like that view, the first volume is Quick Books 2007: The Official Guide. The Official guide is also written by Karhy Ivens, but even the publisher is different - McGraw-Hill. Note that this is not the same Official Guide that comes with the Premier Edition.
The Premier Edition of Quickbooks is aimed at the more advanced businessman with a need for advanced inventory tracking features, business plans, forecasting, and it has several industry specific special packages including one for the accounting profession. It is no accident that the publisher for this book is CPA911.
This is the book for the Premier Edition.

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful detailed informtion.......2006-02-22
The book was lacking specific information on how to deal with real estate investment
Not the Greatest By Far.......2005-08-23
Simply put, a difficult book to find the information that you need to set-up and run your business. I was expecting a "How To" guide instead I am trying to find information as simple as "Setting Up QuickBooks" or something similar.
Face it, QB is NOT an easy program to work with, especially if you have never used this type of software before; I am sure most of us have not. This book talks to the intermediate user of accounting and QB programs and does not address the newbie. I run a hearing center and I needed specific information on how to install, set-up and begin to working. The first 50-60 pages dealt with other versions of QB be it Entrepreneur and what not. This is NOT how the book should have been laid out. Information such as that should have been in an Appenidix.
The other REALLY bad part about his book is the complete lack of support from Intuit. Don't even try to call for any sort of how to help. All they are there for is to guide you thru installing the software, NOT setting it up just installation. ANY other questions you may have, you will be asked to buy a support package which ranges anywhere from $300-500 per year! The software cost me $150 and I am going to spend an additional $300-500 to answer some basic questions ot help me get up and running!? Absolutely ridiculous and a total lack of caring and respect for their customers. They try to hit with you with a ton of additional items to buy besides the software. Are you listening Intuit?
I would not buy this book. Actually I got it for free when I bought QB Pro 2005. This book is SO bad that I am actually givig it away an buying something else to help me. That kinda says it all.
All the details needed for expertise.......2005-01-09
As an accountant, I've looked at all the books I could recommend to clients, because it's better for me when users understand what they are doing, and how to do it right. I found the other books much more shallow, and therefore less useful. This is the only book that has the depth and details that can turn anyone into a competent Quickbooks user. The information about what to do, when to do it, how to do it, and when to do something different is amazingly complete. The writing is easy to follow, and all explanations are wonderfully clear. The other books I examined tell users to make selections, without explaining what they're doing, and without explaining the other choices they have. That's how users make bad choices. This book not only teaches you how to become expert in Quickbooks, you also learn a lot of bookkeeping and accounting.
Buy Quickbooks For Dummies instead.......2005-01-06
I thought I'd try the "official" book this time around....should have stuck with the real expert who writes the dummies book on Quickbooks.
Terrific Information!.......2004-12-08
This book has an amazing amount of information to help you understand and use Quickbooks properly. There are great explanations about the way the general ledger is affected by everything you do, and how or why to do things in different ways. But the best part of this book is the tips about using workarounds to make Quickbooks do exactly what you and your accountant want it to do. There is information in this book my accountant didn't know, but now he's recommending the book to his Quickbooks customers. I've looked at every book about Quickbooks, and none of the others come close to this one.

not for mac users.......2006-05-06
I wish I'd known when I bought this that it is exclusively for Windows users. Even though my version of Quicken is 2006 for mac, you'd think, by the way this book reads, that there is no such thing! Be warned!
Excellent .......2006-03-13
Excellent book and very easy to follow. A must for any first time user, or anyone who is upgrading.
Good guide for first-time users.......2005-10-08
I really like this book. The author seems to be unbiased in her opinions, and has experience in writing many of these kinds of (technical/software) books. She uses her real-life examples to help explain different aspects of the program, and uses humor to keep the reading interesting. I am a first-time user of Quicken, but I found the book very helpful and I would recommend it to new Quicken users.

Customer Reviews:
Quicken 2004 Premier home and business.......2004-08-14
This book DOES NOT COVER anything to do with the Small Business side of the program. I was very disappointed in it.
Excellent Reference.......2004-03-08
I needed a reference guide for Quicken 2004. After purchasing the Dummies version, this book is by far the better text. It provides clear, concise information with screen shots for all aspects of Quicken 2004 including items you may not know about. (Records Organizer Household Organizer!) Those were not mentioned in the other text. She gives suggestions for how to set up your files the way that you want. I highly recommend this book whether you are an expert or just beginning. It is well worth the price!
pretty shallow even for beginner, look elsewhere.......2003-07-11
I purchased this book to get detailed info on various aspects of Quicken 2003 practical usage. This book offers merely a description of menus and features - no deeper insight how to tackle more serious challenges, which will inevitably arise in the moment you will create multiple checking & credit card accounts, start to transfer funds in between them, run the reports etc.
The problem is that the book tells you not much more then what is obvious from the interface to any computer literate user; if you're in doubt, you can still check online help. In all honesty, I found the basic 70 page long user guide which comes with boxed Quicken more helpfull then this book....
Just a sample of the quality and depth of information offered by this book, randomly opened at the pages below:
pages 210-211: "Another new feature....is that the report window is automatically minimized to the Quicken task bar when you click outside the window...to view the report again, click it's name in the taskbar and the report reappears."
.. I bet nobody would ever figure this out without having to look for info inside this book. I think that giving this book 2 stars out of 5 I'm still doing a favor to the author and the publisher.
Help Screens.......2003-02-28
Aside from a few tidbits, I didn't find this book much more helpful than reading the help screens within Quicken itself. I guess since it is in book form it is easier to reference than the screens but I was looking for a book that offered insight into using Quicken, not how to navigate menus. This book follows the ol' "If you want do this, do that" format which I really believe is beneath most computer users these days. I had to re-enter a lot of data having found things out myself rather than through the book. I bought the book specifically for this purpose and found it worthless in this regard. I was looking for something that related Quicken to real life situations e.g., where to find the reams of data that Quicken requests, how a complicated financial statement translates into a Quicken entry, the pros and cons of entering the same transaction different ways in Quicken, and the different ways to set up the same portfolio, to name a few. More examples would have been useful.
The basics.......2002-10-23
Very handy when setting up the software. I appreciated all of the great screen shots offered.
Average customer rating:
- Great product

Not Tailored for Mac Users.......2005-08-04
This book has been a bit of a disappointment since all of the screen shots and commands are from the Microsoft Windows version of Quicken. I have discovered several features and commands that are not included in the Mac software that I own. Hopefully Quicken will correct this deficiency in future editions.
Excellent Reference.......2005-02-06
This book is a must have whether you are new to Quicken or already a Quicken owner. The extra tips and new sidebars are worth reading. Quicken has so many features, you need a guide to truly get the most out of your software. Whould you know that Quicken Dexlue and Premiere come with a Household organizer and Emergency forms without the book? You don't have to read cover to cover, you can reference the sections covering the differing financial centers. I bought last year's edition and when upgrading for 2005, this was a must read. If you have Quicken or are considering purchasing, this book should be read. Maria covers all features in an easy to read format, and the screen shots are very helpful. The Dummies editions for Quicken can't compare.
Not much depth.......2005-01-29
As an "official" guide, you would think that this was a definitive source of information to help with the many esoteric challenges that Quicken presents. As powerful and mature as Quicken is, it still suffers from an enormous number of quirks, particularly as it relates to on-line connectivity with banks and brokerages. This books simply does not proceed past the basic operation of each function and does nothing to help you fix or mitigate problems with share balances or, for that matter, how to really move to paperless financial management. You either need to endure Quicken's minor irritations, find another source of information, spend money to talk with someone at Quicken, or tinker endlessly. I was looking for some in-depth help and insight. It's simply not here.

Very little additional insight.......2001-04-22
There's very little in here that isn't in the help system. I've really tried to get some value out of it, but so far it hasn't told me anything that wasn't obvious. I thought that it might at least help me make some sense out of Quicken's somewhat clunky interface, but it doesn't, for the simple reason that it is a robotic transcription of the software to book form.
If you're new to computers and find it easier to deal with books than software then I suppose it might be of some value. I can't really say. But if you're new to home finance software (like me) and comfortable with computers then this is one entry that you can leave off your ledger.
Great book! Lots of Info!.......2001-01-09
This book has lots of step-by-step instructions and illustrations for completing tasks with Quicken. So what, right? Well, what sets this book apart from other computer how-to books is the background information the author provides about your finances. She explains all kinds of things, including investment basics, home-buying/mortgage tips, and tax info. I learned lots of things I didn't know about financial matters AND learned how Quicken can help me keep track of everything. Bravo!
Portfolio Info Missing.......2000-12-21
This book is good for a beginner. It certainly covers all the features from A to Z. My only complaint is that the Portfolio View changed significantly between Quicken 2000 and 2001. I bought this book hoping that there would be some explainations of how to use this new feature. There is no explaination, not even a little icon indicating "New for 2001".
