4 out of 5 stars A great starting point.......2007-06-26

With most new products you have to start somewhere and for those that are familiar with SP2003 but have no idea with 2007 or are new to SPS2007 then this is a great starting point to learn the architecture behind it all a reference guide to assist when you not 100% sure on doing something as an administrator.

4 out of 5 stars Not for developers.......2007-05-13

Great book for pre-sales and administrators. But too much information in this book does not give crispy answers to questions

3 out of 5 stars Sharepoint encyclopedia...........2007-05-05

It discusses everything you need to know with regard to MOSS 2007 but never really makes a point or stands out in any area. I read it and I feel like I am reading an infomercial about it and at times it lays out things you can do but it is not focused or useful in terms of diving into Sharepoint functionality or pointing out ways to actually get anything satisfying accomplished.

5 out of 5 stars if you use MOSS 2007, you need this book!.......2007-04-11

This is the "real" documentation for MS Office sharepoint server 2007. I believe they should have included a pdf version with each licensed version of the server.

2 out of 5 stars Contributing Authors Make it Worthwhile.......2007-04-11

When the "principle" author turns the writing reins over to others, the contents of this book becomes worthwhile. Unfortunately, that does not happen often enough. In reading this book I am reminded of the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Hobbes asks Calvin why he is not going to school. Calvin replies that he is just going to go on talk shows and hype himself.

Don't buy into the hype. If you do, you are going to feel very lonely with this Administrator's Companion. Scot Hillier's books, although they have a developer focus, offer a lot more than this book does for the administrator.

Book Description

Workflow is the glue that binds information worker processes, users, and artifacts. Without workflow, information workers are just islands of data and potential. Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System details how to implement workflow in SharePoint 2007 and the rest of the 2007 Office System to help information workers share data, enforce processes and business rules, and work more efficiently together or solo.

This book covers anything you're likely going to need to know -- from what workflow is all about, to creating new Activities; from InfoPath forms to ASP.Net forms; from the Rules Engine to the object model. There's even a section on integrating Office 2003 clients with SharePoint 2007 workflows. You'll come away from reading this book with solid knowledge of how to implement workflow in the new world of Office and SharePoint.

3 out of 5 stars Crutial Information about Asp.Net Task Forms is missing.......2007-09-14

Wanted to know about aspx forms dev-n-dep for sharepoint 2007 workflows. Found no code samples online [all samples online talk about infopath :-(]. From the table of contents thought that this book will be good BUT unfortunately it is NOT. It is missing a crutial information about dev-n-dep of .aspx custom TASK forms.
This book explains about custom TASK forms using InfoPath BUT NOT USING ASPX!!!
Otherwise this book is excellent from Asp.Net dev-n-dep viewpoint.

3 out of 5 stars Nice person.......2007-07-23

I read half of this book over the weekend when I didn't have the possibility to connect to the net and then it is useful. But it is a little bit to much screen dumps etc. and we inherit from this class and I don't know why or "I am not a good programmer" so for someone that wants a first introduction to Workflow in Sharepoint then this book or do some free web training can be recommended. For a deeper understanding of workflow this is not a book. Maybe that Sharepoint workflow book is not written yet.

Some good points that I like is the connection with Sharepoint Office and what the vision is as I am still having my customers running 2003 that is useful...

5 out of 5 stars All the Essentials.......2007-04-27

I agree with many of the reviews already written. This is a well organized and to the point tutorial on workflows with the Office system. I skimmed through once to get the high level overview, and dove into chapter 6 to get into designing workflows in visual studio very quickly.

As was pointed out in another review, the author is 'conversational' but I didn't feel like it hurt the book at all. I guess that is a matter of personal preference. Overall, this book was very helpful and I would highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic WF+MOSS 2007 reference.......2007-03-27

I struggled with workflows, especially integreating the webified versions into MOSS 2007 Forms Server going back to the very early beta days. While I was able to get them to work, some concepts were hazy to me. David's book brought it all together with some fantastic examples. If you're new to WF, this first section will address the core concepts... no need to go out and get another workflow book. The three chapters on creating a custom activity, creating a sequential & statemachine workflow, and making it available over the web via Forms Server are fantastic.

Only reason I'm not giving it a 5 out of 5 is because the book is very conversational. A book of this type should be more reference, not "chatty."

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding coverage of a difficult topic.......2007-03-14

I have been creating workflows in SharePoint 2007 since early in the beta. The process is challenging and - at times - frustrating. David has done an excellent job providing the details and examples necessary for developers to be successful. You will find answers in this book that are not available from any other source.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent format with easy to find content.......2007-10-12

Was a little hesistant to get another in the "unleashed" series since I have been burned before with a lot of content that is dry and not pertinent to my environment. On the contrary, this is one of the best books I have seen on the new MOSS 2007 enviroment. It is clearly written and organized so that I don't have to search to hard for what I need and I can ignore what I don't.

4 out of 5 stars A book for MOSS administrator.......2007-10-09

So far I have read 5 books about SharePoint 2007. This is my fifth book in this subject. This book is different. This book is for IT system administrators and not for developers. However, as a consultant for SharePoint 2007 development, I find that this book reveals the administration considerations I usually ignore. Therefore, my review is based on the uniqueness of this book.

    Pros:
    1. This book is an excellent resource for system administrators. It covers most of SharePoint administration I can think of. In addition, the authors provide guide lines for SharePoint migration, the integration of SharePoint 2007 / Exchange 2007 / ISA 2006 / Forefront, and farm planning. These are the gems of this book. You can not afford to skip the chapters about application of Exchange/ISA/Forefront in Internet SharePoint 2007 environment.

    Cons:
    1. Tables and Figures are printed in small fonts. I would prefer a bigger font size.
    2. This book is around 800 pages, and is written for system administrators. If you are a developer, you might be disappointed because there are only a few lines of code.
    3. The authors discuss the SharePoint infra-structure including Exchange/ISA/Forefront. However, the lab environment is not designed that way. So the readers who want to do exercise might be disappointed.

My personal recommendation: If you are MOSS and WSS administrator, you must have this book. If you are a versatile consultant, this book should be a good reference on your book shelf. If you are a pure hand-on developer and new to SharePoint, you might opt to choose code-intensive books such as Inside SharePoint Service 3.0 by Ted Pattison.

I rate the book four stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Best Sharepoint book I own...and I own 5 of them!.......2007-09-19

I bought this book as it is a complete overview of every aspect of a Sharepoint 2007 implementation than any other book I have. It covers best practices for everything from what kind of site template to use to what are the best security methods for your SQL database. Very thorough and the best book on Sharepoint 2007 out there. It is in depth enough to get the job done but not so deep that there isn't room for the entire project plan of a Sharepoint implementation.

If you are like me and the ONLY resource in your company for installing, implementing, administering and rolling out Sharepoint, this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overall coverage of MOSS.......2007-06-27

Are you looking for one book that gives you an overall view of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and its possibilities? Michael Noel and Colin Spence have managed to include ideas that were not possible in the earliest MOSS books. The first books relied heavily on beta-versions and some things were not available for the first books.
In addition to covering administration and basic customization of MOSS, SharePoint 2007 Unleashed contains very good sections on planning and installing MOSS. It also covers how to use Office applications with SharePoint. I especially enjoyed the chapters about Exchange 2007 and Office Communications Server. Both being relatively new, information in a concentrated form is hard to come by and this book gives a good overview on what to consider. It helped us alot!
Each chapter ends with a Best Practices section that provides some very good information.

If you need one book that gives you good, concise information about SharePoint Server 2007; I recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Good book for admins.......2007-06-23

SharePoint 2007 Unleashed is a great reference for SharePoint administrators. I found it to have a great balance of high level planning information as well as detailed information that can be used as a reference once you've got SharePoint installed. What I liked best about this book was the breadth of subjects it covered. Noel and Spence aren't just experts on SharePoint, but other disciples. And it shows. This book covers not only how to get the most out of SharePoint, but how to use SharePoint with Exchange, MOM, ISA, OCS, the Office clients and more. The icing on the cake is the backup and recovery chapter. It includes a great script that can be used in small installations to use STSADM to back up all the Site Colletions in the farm. Very nice.

As a SharePoint administrator and SharePoint MVP I highly recommend this book.

I came here to write a review for this book, and found that a reviewer below, "A reader", had already written what I was going to write. This book provides a reader with no information, but with long lists of websites to look at. You can access those websites most often just wasting time (like "A reader" already said). Using search engines like Google/Yahoo is much better than thumbing through this book.

5 out of 5 stars Good Concise Overview to Get One Started.......2005-05-15

You can't watch television these days without getting bombarded with ads for on line brokerage companies. What's been missing has been a centralized source for information about the whole thing. This book provides that source. It's not complete - if it were it would be so big that you couldn't carry it around - but it's a great start.

You can read this book from cover to cover in just a few hours. That is, just a few hours if you don't take the time to go out on the web looking at the things she suggests. And that right there is the key to this book. Here is a good start that covers the whole field from A to Z, and at nearly each and every point along the way she points you to web sites for more information about specific points.

The problem with going to the web for more information, of course, is that web sites appear, go away, merge or whatever. She admits this, but accepts this risk and gives you multiple sites (you couldn't possibly visit all that she mentions) or suggests ways to find a missing or dead site.

This is a great way to get the basic information you need before getting started with selecting a broker and deciding what to buy.

4 out of 5 stars A good high level history of the physical currency........2007-02-18

This book is great and quick overview of how money became the physical currency of modern times. Starting with trade of goods, and then to shells and cocoa beans, and then to minted coins and finally to the form of paper money across various countries. While the complaints about specific historical event being wrong maybe true, the social aspects are the importants points of the book. With America, in the early times of the nation, the decision to use a decimal system ultimately impacted how numbers were used for other subjects outside of currency. This changed science and business. This book is very good and filled with interesting tidbits of trivia around the history of money.

3 out of 5 stars Once again, shaky history.......2006-10-11

As many other reviewers noted, his history is shaky. Not only that, his anthropological knowledge and understanding of social fabric of many of the societies he reviewed are also weak. It seems that Mr. Weatherford wrote his book without always checking his sources, as if 'out of his head'. My personal favorite flop was his continuous insistence that Lydia was a country located by IONIAN sea. Has he checked his map? Ionian sea is on the other side of Greece and, naturally, modern Turkey in the region where Lydia was located has access to Aegean and Mediterranean seas. I am a little upset with writers who undertake to write sprawling historical analyses without having a solid historical base. He would have gotten a C- in my class. Still his style is entertaining and once you get used to inaccuracies and are willing to overlook them, then it could be an enjoyable read.

2 out of 5 stars I struggled my way thru this one.......2006-08-29

I guess I only finished it becuase I always finish a book I start reading (especially if I paid for it).
It was so hard to read, the style is tiring, resembling a ranting inner dialogue more than a book on an economic category, even iof it is from a cultural and anthropological perspective!
At the end of the day I can say I know what Aztecs used for money (and how they tortured children to death as children's tears were considered some sort of "rain magic". damn, I REALLY DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW THAT!!!) and that coins were invented by Lydians (and a number of simiral pieces of information) but I also have a HEADACHE and am feeling frustrated and nauseated and extremely unhappy.
I don't think that is how you are supposed to feel after reading a book on history of money! I don't feel informed or enlightened at all.
Having read other people's reviews I guess accuracy of information presented (unless it refers to social or cultural aspects of money) might also be problematic?!

2 out of 5 stars not an economic history of money.......2005-10-31

This is the sort of book you get when an author writes on a subject with which he has only a passing familiarity, and lacks the confidence that the subject matter is inherently interesting enough to hold the reader's attention. The result is a book that is ultimately unsatisfying.

One symptom of the problems described above is that large portions are devoted to subjects other than money. For example, the author uses the first three pages after the introduction to describe Aztec ritual sacrifice in literally gory detail before proceeding on to the use of cocao beans as commodity money. I think that's meant to be what they used to call in show business a "grabber," but for the reader expecting to learn about money, it's a distraction. Another problem is that the author's grasp of modern economics is shaky at best, and especially in the latter part of the book, he'll make a point and then repeat himself, much as an undergraduate trying to extend the length of a term paper that's run a few pages short.

And yet, there's also some interesting and oddly convincing tidbits of information here. The author states that L. Frank Baum's 1900 book "The Wizard of Oz" is really a parable about the need for a bimetallic dollar based on both gold and silver. But even as it strikes you that this is an interesting bit of trivia, you realize that it's only a bit of trivia and has little larger significance.

If you're looking for a economic history of money, you should look elsewhere. If you're interested in the cultural and sociological impact of money, this may be more to your liking, though I think it still falls short.

      4 out of 5 stars Intriguing.......2005-01-12

I have been hooked to J Weatherford's writing since I read his other offerings. I can't imagine anyone who would discuss the dry subject of money with so much passion and vigour. In the end, we have a book that's both insightful and compelling to read instantaneously. Here, the author talked about the origin of human-being, of how we co-existed with one another without the need of money. Then, the emergence of money propelled human to think abstractly and differentiating ourselves from other living beings. The author disputed that civilisation is formed by great thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, Socrates but rather by this thing called money. Subsequently, he moved on to talk about the origin of banks; merchants; formation of nations particularly United States of America, its founding fathers, civil wars and its implications, segregation of the whites from the blacks; changes of money forms; demyths about money being pegged to precious metals; money not being used to transact for products and services but rather money exchanging for money to make much money, and so forth. This book affirmed me what I have had known along, giving me a sense of appreciation of money and its significance in this world, having me wonder what lies for us in the forseeable and not forseeable future. Despite all of this, it's imperative to come to grasp that whilst there's no denying the necessity of money in our daily lives, we shall be the master of money rather than the other way around. Afterall, humanity and common sense shall prevail to form a desirable society. Highly commendable.

        Book Description

Economic Value Added (EVA) and Value Based Management (VBM) are today’s hottest management buzzwords. But written information has often been biased and clouded by the authors’ hidden agendas. EVA and Value-Based Management is the first book to unflinchingly discuss the pros and cons of EVA and VBM. Covering both implementation and conceptual issues, with a strong emphasis on performance measurement, value drivers, and management compensation, it allows readers to come to their own informed conclusions.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2003-02-26

Kudos to S. David Young and Stephen F. O'Byrne, management consultants who largely steer clear of their industry's usual empty catchphrases and superficial hype. Instead, their lucid explanation of the importance of shareholder value takes center stage. The heftiness of EVA and Value-Based Management may be daunting, but most readers will be satisfied with Part I's strategic overview. The concepts reappear in Part II accompanied by a wealth of technical details, calculations and case studies to help finance professionals with nitty-gritty implementation of EVA (Economic Value Added) programs. The book honestly assesses EVA's power to motivate managers, noting that some companies just are not well-suited for this performance metric. We from getAbstract prescribe this book to corporate executives who have overdosed on consultant jargon but still want to drive value growth in their companies, and to finance specialists who seek a comprehensive roadmap to EVA implementation.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2002-08-13

As an author, speaker and consultant on these topics, I highly recommend this book. Not only have the authors discussed the pros and cons of a number of approaches thoughfully and concisely, they also expand the level of understanding related to the calculations in an accessible way. Their book discusses both implementation issues and the nitty gritty of the mechanics. In sum, the book takes the reader to the next level of understanding. I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Fails to keep its promise: Metric War + Compensation.......2001-07-02

This book does NOT offer 'A practical guide to valuation' but a theoretical, oldfashioned discussion of the 'Metrics War'and some empirical research on EVA, Compensation and CFROI-Fade.

My rating has got these origins: Empirical research on Compensation,EVA and CFROI-Fade: A+. Discussion of EVA/CFROI: D-. Terminology: D value for 'Hands-on-valuation': F- Structure: F- Style: F-.

This book does contain interesting empirical research on EVA etc, but it does not offer 'A practical Guide to Implementation' because it does not contain a STAGE-Approach. Its terminology differs from any other book I've read, you must often guess, which formulas the authors used, because they did not have the courtesy to express their formulas. Some formulas are wrong nad their discussion of the 'metrics war' betweenn EVA and CFROI lags 5 years behind reality. They attack old methods of CFROI,which Boston Consulting and Holt Value published 5 (!) years ago. They fail to know, that BCG have refined CVA/CFROI and that BAYER. Lufthansa, and VEBA have implemented these refined CFROI-techniques,which are way better, than the old methods, which the book attacks.

Moreover, this book is terrible to read due to a lack of structure, the absence of clear definitions, the lack of formulas, a wordy style, which exhausts your nerves, and many value judgements....

5 out of 5 stars The EVA Guide which holds nothing back!.......2001-02-07

This book, together with 'The Quest for Value'by G. Bennett Stewart, III and 'Valuation' by the Tom Copeland, provide a solid backgound on value-based management. S. David Young and Stephen F. O'Byrne give a fair description of their book: 'This book is not a intended to be a "teaser," which tries to tell you enough to whet your appetite so if you want to know more you will have to hire us as your consultants. We aim to be as comprehensive in our treatment of the subject as possible...We try to hold nothing back.' Thank you very much indeed.

5 out of 5 stars is that right, EVA?.......2001-02-03

I had a great approach to EVA concept but it too much simple in finances. Any way it is a good point to start the trip through the EVA world. The principle of EVA appears sound, but this book is good at attempting to illustrate how to practically use it.
