Book Description
Information Technology Control and Audit, Second Edition is an excellent introductory textbook for IT auditing. It covers a wide range of topics in the field including the audit process, the legal environment of IT auditing, security and privacy, and much more. This textbook first examines the foundation of IT audit and control, discussing what IT auditing involves and the guidance provided by organizations in dealing with control and auditability issues. It then analyzes the process of audit and review, explores IT governance and control, and discusses the CobiT framework and steps that align IT decisions with business strategy. This volume examines project management processes that ensure that projects are controlled from inception through integration. It continues by addressing auditing IT acquisition and implementation, describing risks and controls as related to the life cycle of application systems. It highlights the purchase and installation of new systems, as well as change management. The next section examines the auditing of IT operations in both standalone and global environments, covering types of IT operation, issues related to specific platforms, risk and control assessment, and audit methods and support tools. The textbook concludes with a review of emerging issues, providing undergraduate and graduate students with a thorough overview of a topic critical to organizational security and integrity.
Customer Reviews:
Not good for the CISA exam.......2007-10-02
I bought this book as an additional material to study for the CISA exam. However it didn't help me with the exam at all. Furthermore, in an attempt to cover many things, it did not cover anything in detail. This book is just an endless recollection of bullet points. On top of that, it misses very sensitive topics like disaster recovery planning.
Useful reference material.......2007-02-02
This book has some material relevant to the CISA examination based on the 2003 content areas, although it is not organized or focused as a CISA examination guide. If you are looking for CISA review material for the test, I would strongly suggest to stick with ISACA's combination of review manual and questions CD. I also searched everywhere for study aids for this grueling test and ended up using ISACA's expensive material, but it proved to be the best choice as I passed the Dec 2006 test.
However, as owner of a copy of this book, I assure you that this is an excellent reference of IT management, planning, implementation, risk assessment and control procedures for anyone in the IT business. Most of the material is still relevant as of 2007.
Finally a usable explanation of controls!.......2006-12-30
Audit is not the most exciting topic in the world, but this no fluff book really sets the standard. The care the authors took is obvious from the start, the table of contents is one of the most detailed I have ever seen, it allows the book to be used as a reference.
My favorite chapter was Quality Management, best job of making quality approachable I have seen to date. My least favorite was Project Management, it seemed to lack the application and lean to theory a bit.
I am not an auditor, but as an auditee, this book really helped me understand how they think. Recommended!
Too thin.......2006-03-24
This is a huge book but spends no more then 1 page on any topic. In my opinion the authors only have financial audit experience and little understanding of IT controls. This book shows the failure of the 'integrated auditor' as the authors are tyring to be IT auditors with little IT experience. They touch on some very good points in a few instances and, in general, the book is decent. The authors do not know much outside of the CISA, IIA and financial based certifications as they seem to think that the ISSA (Information Systems Security Assoc.) is sponsored by ISC2/CISSP's (it is not). Overall, I have not been impressed with this book.
Great resource.......2005-12-13
Not having much experience in the IT audit field, this book was a great resource and was easy to understand.

Excellent Presentation of an Array of Stinking Cases.......1999-10-23
I can't say anything more about this book. The author's presentation skills and overall arrangements are marvelous. It's not only informative to read it, but extremely fun! Though my firm specializes in securities, internal control, and compliance areas, I still regularly raise those issues highlighted in this book to my colleagues over email or during conference. We all benefit from it a lot.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book on Waste Management...Don't Be Scared By The Book's Size!.......2006-05-17
This is a really good book that I had to purchase for my graduate level Haz. and Waste Management class. Each chapter provides detailed info, covering everything from solidification and stabilization to proper waste management protocols and corrective action procedures for disposing of waste. You'll also find info about biological and chemical reactions, as well as land disposal and recycling. In other words, it covers the gamut.
Initially, I thought that the book would be boring, but I really learned a great deal from it. We had to do select homework problems from each chapter (some of which our teacher required a lot of detailed answers for), which weren't that bad. The only problem that I had was a lack of any kind of hint for the questions at the end of the chapter. Most of the answers you can find by reading certain chapters, but if you are unsure of where to find that info, you're out of luck if your teacher doesn't correct your papers. Overall, this book comes highly recommended for learning the finer details of waste management!
designer's reference.......2003-07-23
Although this book is geared towards upper level engineering students, I found it extremely beneficial in my research as a graduate student in architecture. Architects and landscape architects interested in reclaiming the post-industrial landscape will find it to be a clear and concise guide to contaminants and remediation technologies.
A plug for ERM - pure and simple!.......2002-05-17
The titlle of the book implies that it has much to do with hazardous waste management, although in reality, it is more about remediation or site cleanup. Classic hazardous waste management deals with the MANAGEMENT of hazardous wastes within an industrial setting and how NOT to let it get into the media in the first place. In this regard, while the authors had the right intention, they fell short. For example, the chapter on environmental auditing was very weak and not given much attention, which is really at the heart of hazardous waste management. In addition, a troubling issue that took away from the book was the blatent self-promotion of ERM in the book, beginning with the foreward by Paul Woodruf, ERM's CEO, and the profuse listing of ERM self credits from editing to graphics. Who really authored the book, the authors listed, or ERM?

Praise for Managing the Audit Function
"The corporate governance issues, accounting irregularities, and legislative actions that have taken place over the past two years have elevated the role and importance of the internal audit function. Managing the Audit Function provides a valuable guide and reference tool for those charged with either executing or overseeing this function."
-- Daniel S. Kaplan, Business Risk Services Partner
Ernst & Young LLP
"It was refreshing to read Internal Audit literature with the appropriate focus on information systems and information systems auditing, since computer systems play such a key role in the processing of accounting transactions and the performance of business operations in today's business environment."
-- William J. Powers, Partner, National Director
Information Systems Assurance Services
BDO Seidman, LLP
"Cangemi and Singleton have created a knowledge management tool for the creation of quality audit manuals and functions. Managing the Audit Function is an important book for all audit managers, and with the addition of new and updated material, including information on the implications and requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, it provides the information to keep pace with changing conditions affecting the audit function."
-- Robert S. Roussey, Professor of Accounting

Customer Reviews:
A must for any Audit Manager.......2007-10-21
This bookd is a really good guide for anyone who manages an audit department in a large corporation. The procedures are detailed and specific and can be easily implemented in any company.
Invaluable Resource for Internal Audit Administrators.......2001-06-14
A very well organized and highly useful publication for audit executives responsible for administrtion of internal audit departments. It is especially beneficial and relevant to organziations with newly established internal audit functions. As the chief auditor of a newly formed group at a major footwear and apparel company, I have relied on this book almost daily to provide knowledge, guidance and direction. It has, and continues to be, invaluable in the development and growth of my organization's internal audit department and has facilitated my focusing on doing things right the "first time." A truly value-added publication!!
A Must Have . . ........2001-06-13
This publication is perhaps the most useful, well organized and valuable resource I have ever come across in the area of Internal Audit Department Administration. As the Director of Internal Audit of a newly formed Audit group at a major footwear and apparel company, not a day passes where I do not refer to this book for knowledge and guidance. It has provided me invaluable insight into administering a department and on focusing on doing things right "the first time." It is a must have resource for any department, new or old, that wants to build itself into a world-class function. I recommend this to every Internal Audit organization.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Strategic Planning Book.......2006-08-01
While browsing through the strategy books, I saw it by chance. I went through the table of contents, hoping it might turn out to be the right one for me as a startup strategy manager. It indeed turned out to be an excellent book on strategic planning in respects of coverage, sequencing of chapters and examples given. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to make progress in strategic planning in a relatively short time.
I had to buy this book for a class.......2006-03-02
So, it wasn't exactly an "optional" purchase. It's a little dry, like a text book usually is. But information is overall good.
Applied Strategic Planning by Leonard D Goodstein, Timothy M.......2005-05-19
In Applied Strategic Planning, the authors give a comprehensive step-by-step guide to conducting applied strategic planning. They clearly demonstrate organisations' need for strategic planning. The book is different from other strategic planning models in some significant ways. The major differences are in the values scan, organisational culture, strategic business modelling and integrating business and functional plans. The authors emphasise the importance of application considerations and environmental monitoring as on-going processes throughout the planning period. The authors produced a high quality book that is an important reference source whenever I need to undertake strategic planning.
The book provides the reader with an overall understanding of the process of applied strategic planning and the required steps and technology for using the model in a strategic planning process. The strategic planning model covers application and implementation from the inception of the plan to the post-implementation phase, making it very practical.
The model involves nine sequential steps as well as two continuous functions, namely environmental monitoring and application considerations, that are involved at each of the sequential phases. The sequential steps are planning to plan, followed by values scan, then mission formulation followed by strategic business modelling. Performance audit and gap analysis follow, these two being different aspects of a single phase. The last three phases are integrating action plans, contingency planning and implementation.
I read the book because I would like to increase my proficiency in and knowledge of practical strategic planning and to sharpen my consultancy skills. The book is very practical and easy to follow. As a consultant, I should be able to use the methodology in the course to manage the planning process.
Applied strategic planning provides an appealing model for transforming organisations. The model is future focused and leadership driven. It involves all people in an organisation. It produces a plan that is detailed, comprehensive, understood and accepted, and has the potential to generate energising force to drive the transformation of an organisation.
After going through the book, I feel confident that I could act as a consultant for any organisation.
Very good, plus..........2003-06-24
This is a very good book. In addition to this, I recommend "Strategic Organizational Change" by Michael Beitler.
A sea of knowledge, one centimeter deep.......2000-08-25
This book widely specifies WHAT to do in strategic planning but it hardly explains HOW to do it. What I expect when reading this kind of topics is not the concept but rather the application procedures and practical techniques for implementing those concepts in an effective and innovative way. In consequence, I found this book repetitive and non productive for planning specialists. However it may serve a lot to beginners and students.

The Essential Handbook of Internal Auditing
ASIN: 0808090445
Release Date: 2006-12-01 |
Product Description
Designed specifically to help practitioners prevail in the current climate of intense scrutiny, Audit Procedures presents the conservative and cost-effective approach needed to conduct a higher-quality audit of nonpublic commercial entities. Practical discussion and consideration of the day-to-day management of audit engagements enhance the quality of the auditor's practice while easy-to-read and easy-to-understand advice, procedures, and practice aids enable practitioners to put official pronouncements into action immediately. Checklists, questionnaires, workpapers, sample correspondence, and sample auditor's reports take the auditor through an engagement, from the initial evaluation of a client to the issuance of the auditor's report. Efficient cost-saving measures, featured throughout the book, help reduce the tendency to overaudit. PCAOB's Auditing Standards are also discussed. This year, the AICPA's Auditing Standards Board has issued a set of eight new risk assessment standards (SASs 104-111) that represent significant changes to existing audit practice--all of which (and more) are covered in this edition. Audit Procedures comes with a free, companion CD-ROM that contains audit programs, correspondence and confirmation letters, practice aids, forms, checklists, Excel workpapers, and auditor's reports. The files on the CD-ROM can be used as templates and edited to suit the practitioner's needs. The topical index and cross-reference section are both designed to locate needed information quickly. Audit Procedures meets accounting industry standards overseen by the peer review system and contains a document covering the peer review of this book. CPE credits are available through the CCH Learning Center (see the book Highlights for more information). This book can be used in conjunction with the GAAS Update Service.

Customer Reviews:
Small Business Answers.......2007-09-05
"Self-Employed Tax Solutions" is an excellent self help start to treating your cottage industry as a business and working your way through the intricacies of filing federal taxes as a small business. Ms. Walker's explanations are clear and well illustrated.
We had no trouble understanding each point and applying the rules to our own small business situation. The only problem we found was her citing a court ruling, putting it in quotes, and not providing a bibliographic source.
Both the glossary and the index are adequate for the novice readers. The style was breezy and light, which made the reading easy.
A good place to start for an entry level "indie" who needs basic tax information. She has several "wish I'd thought of that" ideas for keeping records and saving time.
Nash Black, author of "Taxes, Stumbling Blocks and Pitfalls for Authors."
Self-employed Tax Solutions.......2007-06-13
Easy to understand. I am new to it all and learned quickly thanks to Junes pesentation of the material. Also will be a great reference manual come actual tax time!
Learn about taxes. Without pain........2007-03-30
I highly recommend this book! I am about to graduate design school and am starting up a sole proprietorship. I realized I know absolutely nothing about what I'm getting into tax-wise, so I picket this up on Amazon. An excellent buy! This book is incredibly easy to read and understandable, despite the fact that you would expect the subject matter to be painfully dry. It's not. The world of taxes isn't half as painful and boring as I expected it to be, thanks to this book.
Excellent Book.......2006-12-30
This is a very well written book that provides a lot of insights to self-employed people. Provides very good ideas on deductions and methods to legally cut the self-employed person's overall tax burden.
A Few Issues but Holding a Few Gems Too.......2006-12-24
I pretty much never comment about the font a book is done in, but let me start out my review by saying that this book had the oddest font choice I've seen. The letters were very thin, squarish, and actually hard to read against the white. It made me realize just how important something like font can be in a book.
So, on to the content. This book is written by a self-employed person, for self-employed people, to help them manage their records for taxes. She doesn't want you to DO your taxes - she wants you to hire someone, like her, to do them for you :). She just wants you to be informed about what is going on, and to perhaps help prod your tax person along if they're not very good.
In case you were thinking this book was a mere "nice to have", she says in her introduction that "Such complications [of not handling this properly] could prove fatal to your enterprise." I love it how books say "you must buy me or you will DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH!!!" A page later, she promises "If you use this method, you will never miss a tax deduction" which I sort of doubt :) So this book has already hit a few of my buttons in book reading - threatening certain doom if I don't get the book, promising the moon, and being hard to read :)
Much of the first part of the book focusses on whether you should go into business for yourself, what it means to be self employed, and whether you should be a DBA, Sole Proprietor, LLC, etc. Hopefully anybody looking for tax solutions has already gone through those stages and isn't looking for all their information on these important decisions in a few pages of a tax book.
But on to the meat. When you get into the realm of *taxes*, the book really does well. It explains the difference between personal gifts (tax deductible up to $25 per person per year), entertainment expenses, free giveaway items (pens etc), charity donations, and more, in very clear language.
The book goes into travel deductions, home office deductions, leasing and buying equipment. It gives a ton of examples. Some people might find them annoying - I admit that many of them are quite silly. Still, it's easy enough to skip over them if you're not into cutesy examples, but if they help you absorb a concept, they are there for you to read.
Like with any business book, there are a lot of very common sense things in here - but a few very key tips. The interesting thing is of course that depending on who reads it, they might find different things to be fascinating vs well known. Something that one person says "of course" to, someone else might say "That'll save me thousands!" So it's good that all bases are covered in here.
Well recommended as a book to at least get out from your local library, or to get and share around your network of business-owning friends. It's not a book that I need to sit on my library shelf, but it was worthwhile to read and glean a few important tidbits from. I'll now pass it along to other business owners to let them pick out their own gems.
