1 out of 5 stars Technique but no cookie.......2007-10-19

As someone who has spent over a decade on the Internet, I understand the fundamentals of the building of a tool or the utilization of a tool that can be used to generate money online. If you understand this too, then skip this one.

This book is for the complete novice. BUT if that novice buys it, they will regret it because they will spend hours and hours toiling to get to an expert level of understanding on how to build and utilize a system such as this and then be faced with the same outcome I was.

There is absolutely no recommendation for products and services that do well in this environment. All of the check copies posted in the book were dated from 2005 which most folks know was the hay-day of the search marketplace and literally was the first year in existence for the pay-per-click marketplace. Today's marketplace, especially in the affiliate realm, is extremely more competitive largely because of books like this. There was no effort expended in addressing this competitive pressure and the resulting gap reduction between affiliate commission and PPC bids.

At the end of the day, folks, there are no easy millions. You must be ahead of a trend like Mr. Borelli, to exploit such an opportunity. Once the rest of the world has caught up, the only thing you can hope to do is ... you guessed it ... sell a book to teach others how to do it.

4 out of 5 stars Basic tools for the online gold rush.......2007-09-06

My experience was similar to that of "gordo the lordo." Plenty of clicks but just a few orders. Getting clicks isn't hard. What kind of clicks? That's the $1,000,000 question.

As a search engine advertiser, your task is to capture the clicks of consumers who have made a buying decision or are very close. These clicks will make money for you. The clicks of people who are "just browsing" will cost you money. You have to be a student of online search behavior.

You capture money-making clicks by finding highly relevant keywords and writing focused ads. How hard can it be? Get your ads up and running, tweak them, and watch the money roll in. You only need basic English skills and common sense. A degree in advertising or English is not going to help.

I would encourage anyone to try it because you may discover that you have the knack. By spending $500 or so, you should be able to get an idea how well you might do. Don't make the mistake I made, which was to let my ads capture several hundred clicks without getting any orders. I kept thinking "the orders will kick in." They didn't. Stop your ads after 200-300 clicks and wait for results. (Even 50 clicks are too many with retail sites.) You can either tweak the ad (if it's close to break-even) or abandon it and try something else. Tweaking wouldn't have helped my ads, which earned pennies for every dollar spent on clicks.

You are playing the keyword market on Google. Some keywords sell for $20 per click and more. Search engine advertisers don't get caught up in keyword "bubbles." They are only after potent "value" keywords that sell for 25 cents or less.

The keyword market is like a gold rush. Everywhere you look the ground is torn up by hordes of stampeding prospectors. You wander far and wide hoping to find a stone that hasn't been turned. How many thousands of other guys are out there trying the same thing? Good luck.

You never know. You might have the knack. Affiliate Millions gives you everything you need to know to get started. When I joined my first affiliate program and set up my first ads, I had the book open and followed it not step-by-step but word-for-word. It's just the kind of "excruciating" detail a beginner needs.

Mr. Borelli explains how to evaluate the earnings potential of an affiliate program. The profit, or course, depends on your revenue per click. An adgroup for $20 books may not be the way to go.

Should you actually make money, there is a chapter on campaign finance. You have to manage your cash flow to optimize performance. If another book on online advertising has this kind of chapter, I haven't seen it.

Mr. Borelli has set up the Affiliate Millions website for "prospectors." The only item listed for sale is the book. There is a free monthly newsletter. There are no ads. Mr. Borelli answers questions on the site's discussion board. If you are at all familiar with the "get rich online" racket you know how exceptional this is. Such sites are usually crammed with ads and have little useful information.

Mr. Borelli's advice is a bit sketchy and vague. That's because it has to be. If Mr. Borelli were to disclose his winning formula, everyone would copy him and he would be out of business within hours. All he can do is point people in right direction. Within that proviso, he provides clear and valuable information.

Mr. Borelli makes no promises that prospectors will get rich. He merely suggests that it is possible. He ends the opening chapter with "Take it step-by-step and read the chapters that follow, and you'll stand a good chance of becoming an Affiliate Millionaire yourself." If he starts the book by saying your chances are practically nil, no one will continue reading.

Like "gordo," I'm amazed that anyone could make millions at this. A million dollars in a year is $2,700 a day. You would have to consider yourself pretty successful with $2,700 a day in SALES, never mind commissions. You would have to strike it rich with multiple million-dollar campaigns. You would have to come up with new ones all the time.

Think of the millions in revenue Mr. Borelli is generating for the companies he advertises for. They should throw a party for him.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me.......2007-08-21

I tried the principles in this book. I set up some ads for a variety of products and different companies through Commission Junction and was, at first, delighted that I was getting a good amount of clicks. I was confident the ads were good enough because of some experience I've had in the past writing copy.

However, after over 250 clicks to major websites that boasted a large earnings per click, I got one sale and a large $ loss. The ads were good enough to catch the people's attention, but no one was buying.

I think this is a tough way to go at it. A website might be the better way to go. I am amazed that anyone could make any money doing this, never mind millions.

4 out of 5 stars Direct and Immediately Useful.......2007-07-24

I was seeking a detailed, practical and thorough "how-to" approach to build internet-based revenue. This book filled the bill. It covered all key facets of the approach - particularly helpful for a layperson - as well as for someone with web-based experience (as am I). I have yet to test the specific recommendations. The book was solid.

2 out of 5 stars Basic start but could leave you broke.........2007-07-12

Its true that money can be made by signing up for affiliate programs and marketing them on pay per click search engines. However, its possible to lose a great deal of money and this book doesn't do a good enough job helping people calculate the risks. For example, the author indicates he markets Amazon products. Amazon on its basic associate program pays 4%. A $20.00 book pays a comission of .80 cents. But in pay per click advertising a marketer can pay 30, 40 cents and even a dollar depending on the keywords. In a test marketing the new Harry Potter book (book 5) I spent over 9.00 in ppc ads that resulted in 4 sales. The click thru to sale was 13%... which isn't bad. The point is, I earned only about $2, but spent over $9.00 to earn it (a loss of $7.00). The author doesn't explain how to choose affiliate programs in terms of cost vs. payoff. Anyone who reads this book will get some basic information, but before spending money on ppc advertising they'd be better off buying The Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords which does a better job explaining keywords, writing effective ads and managing campaigns.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2007-07-24

HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE TO READ MUCH OF THE BOOK. RECEIVED PROMPTLY, AND IN GREAT SHAPE

5 out of 5 stars A moving target.......2007-04-10

Writing any kind of book about Amazon is like trying to hit a moving target -- print books become dated the minute they are published while the Internet world keeps growing and changing. This book demonstrates that inevitability moreso than others, but even so, wears its advantages on its sleeves. It is a testament to the informative nature of this book that it still holds so much value even when Amazon itself has changed to render so many of the specifics out-dated. Nevertheless, the guts of the content is still meatier than most books you find on the subject of online sales. The author would do well to consider a revised edition. What do you say, Michael? This level of insight on some of the new features like Seller Central and Amapedia? I'd buy it! - Brent Sampson, author of Self-Publishing Simplified

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2007-03-07

Knowing absolutely nothing about selling on Amazon.com when I ordered this book, I found it to be very informative and a good introduction. Perhaps the information in this book can be found on the Amazon.com website as other reviewers have noted, but if so I couldn't find it and felt the $17 price tag was well worth it. The book covers many different methods of selling on Amazon.com, including auctions, zShop, and Marketplace, along with advertising, the Associates program and the Advantage program. The one glaring omission as far as I was concerned (and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) was shipping. There are only a couple vague references to how shipping costs are calculated and collected, leaving me with more questions than answers.

2 out of 5 stars useful? i disagree.......2007-02-01

maybe for absolute beginners it's ok. i thought a lot of the material was dated. don't pay retail!

4 out of 5 stars Great book! Very easy to follow. If you have the inventory, this book is a must own.......2007-01-07

I could not put this book down once I started reading it, and you won't either! Teaches you how to sell your products on Amazon, with a very easy to learn, in-depth approach. I still carry it with me every time I do anything on Amazon.

When I 1st got the book I went straight for chapter #10. Basically, 'How to get your Amazon Account up & running.' But, if I had the chance to do it over again I would definitely start from the beginning. Author: Michael Bellomo advise is simple and to the point. Bellomo answers all questions you might have on starting an account based on your specific needs; whether you are a small, medium or large business.

The only suggestion I might recommend, is a little in-sight in to the best way for a small business to upload UPC/ISBN #'s to an excel spreadsheet. Using only 1 or 2 PC's. What kind of Barcode Scanner/Program do you recommend, for the money. We had a Dell that came with the computer, that we found out was a $750 piece of junk.

Other than that, this book is a must read for anyone interested in selling on Amazon.

1 out of 5 stars A Lot of Enthisuasm but Too Much Rah-Rah!.......2007-09-09

This is really a book to get you up to speed on the full range of eBay features. I got this book from my local library to checkup on how I'm doing on eBay, and see if I could improve results. The only thing I learned was a reminder to carefully write titles that increase search hits. The rest of the book tends to minimize or ignore the negatives about eBay while putting the best face on everything else.

For example, online sellers communicate in several venues such as Yahoo! Groups, to help each other sell more and solve problems (and many turn to Amazon Marketplace t oincrease sales with no up-front costs, and ease of collecting payments). One trend that has emerged in the last few years as opposed to early internet days is selling items in lots because postage and selling fees are too great on individual items, or because items just don't sell as well as they did in say, 2001. This book makes one passing mention of lots, on page 72.

The book also tends to subtly portray sellers concerned about eBay fees as a little off; some people seem to think people are growing rich off eBay tariffs is his basic argument. Well, Dennis Prince, more than a few sellers think that is very true! While he advises sellers to watch costs and minimize fees, and tells which he thinks are useful, if the reader doesn't pay attention to those sections he will have a lighter wallet listening to all the hype.

The book ignores sell-through rates, and sell-through rates in different categories, advising sellers to research past selling prices and to visit Vendio for online auction tools and statistics. Good advice before you decide to list a bunch of stuff from your attic that will never sell.

And that is the problem with this book. It's hype. The title itself "How To Sell Anything on eBay ... and Make a Fortune!" is consumerism and marketing disrobed. If Mr. Prince thinks he can sell anything on eBay, he is welcome to take my fifty worst items and have a go at them. A lot of items don't sell at all online, or don't sell quickly or profitably. You'd never know that from the title or through the rose-colored smog of corporate media marketing. Perhaps publisher McGraw-Hill should deflate this balloon and do a little down to earth editing.

1 out of 5 stars Very little of substance.......2007-09-07

Promises a LOT more than it delivers; very basic information, padded with lots of "chatty" verbiage. It's particularly annoying that the author spills lots of ink telling you how he won't waste your time. Contains a few useful hints, which could have made a reasonable newspaper article, but not much more.

2 out of 5 stars If You Know Your Way Around a Computer..........2007-01-25

This is not the book for you...or at least, that is how i felt.

I agree with the rating that said it was very drawn out...because it is. All i kept thinking was YAWN...when are we gonna get to the good stuff.

When I did arrive at the "good stuff"...for example how to title your listings, it was short, to the point and nothing enlightened me to something new.

Regret the purchase and hope that in the future the publisher will add that this is a very basic book for the beginner.

5 out of 5 stars informative and valuable!.......2006-02-21

This book - if I ever have the time to USE it - will be a VERY VALUABLE item in my library!

It wasn't the best out there, but there was some ok tips in there.

If he was making a fortune on eBay, he wouldn't be writing this book he would be out on his yaht somewhere in the French Riviera. That is where I will be when my ebay store finally scores.

My store is almost 2 weeks old. I have made over $300 in sales and by years end hoping to add a few zeros to that number.

The thing is, I LOVE shopping on eBay, I love taking pictures, I love bargain hunting...and ofcourse passing on the savings to my customers and future customers. I have to be honest, some of the stuff I find, I like to much to sell and end up having to go for seconds. Then again, I love shopping, so this was totally up my alley.

I also have been a photo buff since I was 15, so I love taking pictures and editing them...it's like art work to me. I then get to share. I am still working on getting some more photo props and a tripod which will make life easier, and photography of merchandise more fun.

I am at an advantage, though; I live in NY so I have tons of wholesalers and manufacterers in this Metro area. It's just a matter of finding the right ones.

Right now, I am still in research phase. So far, so good.

Don't give up, if you like this sort of thing...it can really work for you. I am living it, right now and enjoying every minute.

You can check out how I added some of the tips to my store, and critics are welcomed.

Wish me luck and I wish you the same. Don't give up!!

How to Sell Music, Collectibles and Instruments on eBay

This book is a quick, short introduction to using eBay for buying and selling music and related collectibles and instruments, [one of the "How to Sell ..... and Make a Fortune" series]. It appears to be aimed at those who would rather learn by doing and need only a brief tutorial on the process. This objective is met quite admirably. Those who find they desire more detailed discussions or want information on the ancillary sectors of eBay can find other books that meet these needs.

As to the "Make a Fortune" part of the title, the recommendation essentially is the familiar mantra of retail operations - Buy low, Sell High, Generate High Sales Volumes, Know the Product and Understand the Customer. The difference here is that eBay is the base of operations rather than a store and operating on eBay opens the operation to a potential audience of million. While few make a fortune in retail at this level, the book does offer much information and lists a wealth of reference sources.

The potential market is very large. According to this book 54% of U.S. households have at least one musical instrument player. And, retail music is a stable product category with staying power and sales potential.
* Over 745 million audio CDs were sold in 2003 for $11 billion
* Over 35 million concert tickets were sold in 2002 grossing $2.2 billion
* Music products [instruments, performance gear, etc.] sales in 2002 exceeded $6.9 billion
* Vintage music products and memorabilia generates tens of billions of dollars every year

Those selling in this field can be either: experts in a narrow, low volume market with high profit margins; or broadly interested in a wide, high volume market with low profit margins. Whichever part of this field one chooses to follow there are many sources of information provided in this book.

Memorabilia refers to items like t-shirts, ticket stubs, programs, etc. Once these items were considered to be disposable. However, their presence on eBay has created an expanded, eager collector base. So more items are being valued and the values are increasing.

According to this book there usually are over 650,000 music-related items listed in eBay's categories and over 500 sub-categories for Music, Musical instruments [grossing $500 million a year] and Music Memorabilia [ with 75,000 Rock-n-Roll listings every day] categories. This book claims to be the only one focused on these three areas. Some data the book presents on eBay's sales in the music categories:

* Music - 500 categories
* 700,000 listings each day
* 150,000 records listed
* Musical instruments - $500 million/ year
o 50,000 guitars listed - $1.1 B in 2002
* Musical Products - $350 million/year
* Rock-n-roll memorabilia - 70,000 listings

Chapter 2 is entitled "The History of Selling Music". This information helps one start to develop a background in the field to better understand the items being sold and to prepare for updates and changes. The chapter points to two areas of concern: Fraud and Competition.

The book states that fraud and misrepresentation are widespread, especially with Memorabilia. It is estimated that 99% of the Beatles signature items and 75% of Rock-n-Roll autographs are fake. The book recommends that such items have rock-solid appraisals from recognized specialist appraisers and a written, lifetime guarantee of authenticity.

Competition relates to the various levels of marketing, particularly of musical instruments and related equipment, The mass marketers [Wal-Mart] lower prices and make business difficult for music stores. The Internet also competes with the music stores. Fraud is rife and prices are lowered mercilessly [in the eyes of store-based merchants] In fact some instrument manufacturers forbid the sale of their instruments on the Internet and impose pricing protection for the stores.

The book discusses each sector in the music categories, addressing source information, market, current pricing and the more popular items. Pages 45 to 63 lists many information sources, sub-dvided as by instrument or type of memorabilia.
Chapter 5 discusses the necessary Business Plan focusing on marketing and sales strategies and on the financial aspects.
Chapter 6 covers building and maintaining an inventory. Chapter 7 discusses acquiring and holding on to customers and keeping them happy to generate return business. The book addresses the tasks to use eBay for selling - Listing, Payment, Shipping, etc. Chapters 10 to 12 cover the elements of becoming a music specialist in one of the categories and sub-categories. It outlines the knowledge needed and the means to keep the customers happy, and advised of one's available inventory.

The book is well-written, easy to read and has enough illustrations to convey the needed message. I would recommend this book for beginners or novices in using eBay for buying and selling music-related items on eBay.

Since the authors themselves were unable to make a fortune on the Internet, and indeed, one got disbarred partially because of their vandalism of Usenet, I think you can guess this book isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

    2 out of 5 stars Not A How-To, It's A Cautionary Tale.......2003-10-14

I had the unfortunate experience of being on the receiving end of many complaints when Canter and Siegel first burst onto the spamming scene in 1994, so I know a lot about the problems their marketing activities caused. This book gives lots of tips on how to follow in their footsteps to seek fame (well, infamy) and fortune on the Internet, but a much more informative lesson can be drawn by looking at where these morally bankrupt business ideas landed them. Both Canter and Siegel lost their licenses to practice law in Florida after a particularly nasty dispute over some missing client funds. Eventually Canter was disbarred in Tennessee for email related misbehavior, and shortly thereafter, their marriage broke up, according to several news accounts.

Many commentators have noted that the moral and ethical problems that marked their careers are a prerequisite to engaging in the destructive practices of email spamming that they advocate in this book. While there may be a chicken-and-egg quality to the question of "does being a bad person make you into a spammer" vs. "does being a spammer make you a bad person," at the end of the day, spamming is morally repugnant, ethically suspect, and now illegal to one extent or another in more than 30 states and more than a dozen countries around the world. Maybe you *can* make some money doing it, but you can also make money engaged in many other illegal and unethical activities. It's not a question of "can," rather it's a question of "should."

According to recent news reports, Ms. Siegel reportedly passed away several years ago and Canter is employed writing software manuals. I own a copy of their book, not as a useful how-to guide, but as a reminder that some opportunities come at too high of a price.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading and Inaccurate.......2003-02-09

The advice that Siegel and Canter dispense in this book is worse than useless. It will almost certainly get your Internet account cancelled if you tried to follow their instructions. There is such a thing as legitimate methods of conducting business on the Internet. Business-2-business sites and e-commerce sites are good examples of this. But the "send unsolicited bulk emails" and "spam thousands of Usenet newsgroups" strategies that this book teaches are not only ineffective (it has been estimated that over 95% of spammers lose money in the long run), but unethical. UCE and spam take advantage of the Tragedy of the Commons: UCE and spam are not free-speech issues. Siegel and Canter should be ashamed.

1 out of 5 stars Siegel is a most excellent spammer.......2001-12-11

Anyone who believes that Ms. Siegel's book is the
solution for an Internet marketing strategy has
not learned the lessons of history. She made her
fortune offering what are already freely available
services to internationals desiring temporary USA
visas. And she did it on the basis of nothing more
    than spam.

Can you honestly think that you will have the same
results she has had by employing the same technique?
Are you prepared to have your plug pulled by a
number of service providers, and to be despised by
Internet-savvy users all over the world? If the
answer to these questions is yes, then by all means
read her book -- but don't try doing business with me.

If you would rather use the Internet for the long term
-- and you should because it'll be here -- then find a
way to make it a part (not the whole, not even the
biggest part) of an overall business strategy that
puts customers and potential customers first.

    4 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK!.......2001-11-06

I was delighted with this book and so will you be. You'll be making more money than you could ever imagine, quickly and easily.

    1 out of 5 stars Harmful advice.......2003-02-22

This advice is terrible. It is worse than useless. Your Internet account cancelled will certainly be canceled if you tried to follow their instructions. There are legitimate methods of conducting business on the Internet. 2 out of 5 stars Defensive and self-serving........2000-09-10

Written by the original King and Queen of Spam, one would expect this book to be the original book on marketing on the internet. Not so. Most of it is either a description of how they executed their infamous Usenet bombing runs, or discussion of marketing ideas that they themselves have never tried. For example, they discuss selling sex and porn on the net at length, but they have never been in that business. Additionally, Canter and Siegel feel that advertising on the Internet should be as natural and expected as in other media such as TV and radio but they forget that those media are funded by the advertisers, not by the consumers as is the case with the internet. They discount those who dislike and flame spammers as a lunatic minority despite the volume of hate mail they themselves received, and they don't consider the silent majority who will be just offended enough to make a point of avoiding them should the need for their kind of services arise. Overall, I'd rate this book as an excellent source of ideas *not* to try if you're going into business online. It probably has more value to net.sociologists as a sort of evil relic than to e.business types.

    5 out of 5 stars You can't beat it..........1998-12-01

This book is a "must have." Lots of big business types, especially sysops and network administrators, will tell you that you'll lose your internet account and piss people off if you follow the book's instructions. That may be. But the internet is changing and people are making a lot of money on it right now whether the nay-sayers like it or not. There's no stopping it; you may as well join in!

    1 out of 5 stars Great!.......1998-10-13

Just what everyone was looking for! A book that explains to spam to people who are too stupid too figure it out for themselves. Now total newbies can loose there account and get sued too!

5 out of 5 stars A very crisp, biting, humorous, "gotta' have one" book!.......1997-02-14

If you've ever thought of starting your own business and didn't know where to start - this is the book for you. Everyone can gain insight to both the internet and their own reasons for wanting a business. It's a "no holds barred", "tell it like it is" book. The authors not only have learned how to make money on the "Net", but how to stir things up.
    That's half the fun!
