Book Description

Thorough and up-to-date, this book supports any of the most popular approaches to AIS: focus on transaction cycles and controls; focus on systems life cycle; focus on databases and data modeling; or focus on computer-based controls, fraud and auditing. The book begins with an overview and conceptual foundations then goes on to discuss control and audit of accounting information systems, accounting information systems applications, and the systems development process. For CPAs and corporate accountants.

1 out of 5 stars Yawning Hell.......2006-05-31

Is this the world's most boring book ? Technically competent but painfully dry. A gift too insomniacs. Good luck on getting past page 1 !

2 out of 5 stars Only Buy if Required for a Class.......2005-05-09

Very boring reading. Chapters tend to repeat themselves. The class I had for this book was one of the most boring classes I ever had. Instructor lectured from power point slides. I could have taken this class homestudy and done just fine, than to sit in class.

1 out of 5 stars Caution: Will Cause Drowsiness........2004-04-03

This book is simply horrible. It takes the stereotypical accountant and shoves him into the pages. It is so lethargic and monotonous that all the valuable information within the book just stops making sense. This book should be read by anyone who has doubts about becoming an accountant. They'll drop everything and go into premed. Horrible!

3 out of 5 stars Agreed. Boring as dirt........2003-05-10

Everything you need is in here, but the book truly is boring as dirt. If you need it for a class, fine. But do not buy it if you just want something to read.

2 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but boring.......1999-09-12

This is a very comprehensive textbook of the subject. It deals with just about every aspect of the AIS realm. It is, however, a very dull book. There isn't much illustrating, no color, and absolutely no life beyond the black and white wasteland of its pages.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clear guide for creating effective presentations .......2007-08-24

Microsoft PowerPoint changed the world of presentations by simplifying the process of creating a computerized slide show. Alas, over time people started squeezing too much information into every slide and using the preinstalled generic titles. PowerPoint's simplicity let people forget the purpose of presentations: to persuade or to inform without being boring. Cliff Atkinson shows you a creative way to build a good presentation without falling into the PowerPoint template trap - tell a story instead. At present, he provides a free template, storyboard formatter and story guide at sociablemedia.com that adds value to the book, which refers to these resources repeatedly. We recommend this to anyone who gives presentations.

5 out of 5 stars I've used this method and it works.......2007-07-25

I borrowed it from the library and I am going to purchase it for my personal business library. I think that this is a great resource book. I decided to try this method since I do a presentation about once a month to pharmacists. This book helped me to organize my thoughts and present the material in a logical manner. I am in the health care industry and the people I present to are used to seeing bullet points BUT they are bored with it. For those that think the information here won't work, I say give it a try before dismissing it. You may find that your audience doesn't want as many bullet points and facts as you think and that you are a breath of fresh air in doing something new and innovative with your presentations. And remember you can put all of that information from your bullet points in the notes pages and print that out for them.

2 out of 5 stars Don't understand what others see in it.......2007-07-07

I was disappointed having bought this book based on good reviews, so here's my review:

1. The author provides just one tool for one particular type of presentation: "pitch an idea to your bosses". The tool is a 3-act presentation using few words and more graphics and presenter narration.
Although a good tool for some presenters and some presentations, I can only see myself using this in 10-20% of my presentations.

2. Because the author refuses to explore other methods, the book becomes very repetitive and too detailed going on about the same points all the time.

3. Because of this, this is certainly not a book to keep for reference.

4. ...unless you are a total PowerPoint novice and computer-illiterate and want to read a step-by-step instructions about how to resize and crop images in PowerPoint, etc.

5. This is the first book by Microsoft Press I read and I was shocked at the obvious attempts throughout the book to advertise other marginally-related Microsoft products.

The book description says: "Targeted for intermediate to advanced level users". I would never recommend this book to anyone but absolute beginners and even then there must be better books.
The intermediate user should really just browse the first couple of chapters to get the basic idea (1. set the scene 2. show the conflict 3. resolve the conflict) in a bookstore and then decide for himself if he really wants to waste money on something which can easily be summarized on one page.

5 out of 5 stars Better Presentations.......2007-07-05

I've been doing presentations since the BP (before Powerpoint) era and I have a structure that I've used since the beginning. This book caused me to rethink my approach, and, after using it on several recent presentations, I have to say it is a change for the better. Highly recommended if quality communications is your goal.

5 out of 5 stars a very, very helpful book on creating effective presentations.......2007-07-03

While I didn't adopt the 3 > 3 approach Atkinson suggests, I really took to heart his idea of replacing wordy, boring slides with those with only a title (a concept, expressed as a sentence) and high-impact relevant graphics. As a result, I created a six-hour workshop (on personal productivity) that contained a total of five bullets (out of 130 slides). I also created - from the same slide show - a prose booklet that participants take home. Very useful.

4 out of 5 stars A great starting point.......2007-06-26

With most new products you have to start somewhere and for those that are familiar with SP2003 but have no idea with 2007 or are new to SPS2007 then this is a great starting point to learn the architecture behind it all a reference guide to assist when you not 100% sure on doing something as an administrator.

4 out of 5 stars Not for developers.......2007-05-13

Great book for pre-sales and administrators. But too much information in this book does not give crispy answers to questions

3 out of 5 stars Sharepoint encyclopedia...........2007-05-05

It discusses everything you need to know with regard to MOSS 2007 but never really makes a point or stands out in any area. I read it and I feel like I am reading an infomercial about it and at times it lays out things you can do but it is not focused or useful in terms of diving into Sharepoint functionality or pointing out ways to actually get anything satisfying accomplished.

5 out of 5 stars if you use MOSS 2007, you need this book!.......2007-04-11

This is the "real" documentation for MS Office sharepoint server 2007. I believe they should have included a pdf version with each licensed version of the server.

2 out of 5 stars Contributing Authors Make it Worthwhile.......2007-04-11

When the "principle" author turns the writing reins over to others, the contents of this book becomes worthwhile. Unfortunately, that does not happen often enough. In reading this book I am reminded of the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Hobbes asks Calvin why he is not going to school. Calvin replies that he is just going to go on talk shows and hype himself.

Don't buy into the hype. If you do, you are going to feel very lonely with this Administrator's Companion. Scot Hillier's books, although they have a developer focus, offer a lot more than this book does for the administrator.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good review software.......2007-09-15

This is a good review software, plenty of great question, many of which appear verbatim on the exam. The review below "wow...for a major publisher, this is horrible" is written by a moron. If you want the answers to stop popping up, set it on test mode, not review mode. Though, he is right about the spelling errors, they definitely forgot to turn on their spell check.

3 out of 5 stars Could be much better.......2007-07-14

I have a recent but earlier version. The software was buggy, though still usable. I would pay for an upgrade if available, but I'm not motivated to spend full price for something that may or may not work.

Wiley, fix the software and provide an upgrade path. Offer a demo version with just a few questions so that customers can see how well it works on their systems.

2 out of 5 stars Wow...From a major publisher, this is a horrid job!!.......2007-05-24

I just want to lend another opinion in other areas of problem that the other reviewers didn't mention. Here's my summerized list of pros and cons:

Pros:
- Plenty and plenty of multiple choices that has been extremely helpful for my exam preparation.

Cons:
- Simulations have plenty of errors. There are questions that I could tell the answers aren't lined up correctly (Bond simulation is an example). There are prenty of wrong answers.
- Gazillin typos. Some can be very misleading and mess you up in the real eam.
- Simulation format isn't similar to the real exam.
- I found it very annoying that I can't finish the sims THEN compare the result with the answers. The answers keep popping up as you go on....and to make it worse, if you don't need to answer something, there is no way if that's the right answer. For example, you are given a set of check buttons that you can pick more than one answers. If you pick one either right or wrong, you get the response (which is good). But if you know that a choice is not part of the right answer, there's no way you can be sure unless you intentionally pick it anyway.
- Plenty of bugs. Quite a hassle for me to get it up and running on my Vista machine.

All-in-all, a good tool for studying multiple choices, not so much for simulations....

Good luck with your exam!!

5 out of 5 stars Great for the price........2007-05-23

Without limit on user and expiry date. That's the best part of it.

4 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT TOOL........2007-03-14

Wiley Version .12 is an excellent tool to prepare for the exam as it has more mcqs than version.11.They could have added more simulations. One more good thing is that they have seperated the topics in mcqs that would be tested from July 2007 for Auditing section. It gives you a real feel of apprearing for the exams. It would have been more helpful if database for the reaserch mode of the simulations mode were included. It is a very essential tool for students who want to succeed in the exams.

Book Description

Workflow is the glue that binds information worker processes, users, and artifacts. Without workflow, information workers are just islands of data and potential. Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System details how to implement workflow in SharePoint 2007 and the rest of the 2007 Office System to help information workers share data, enforce processes and business rules, and work more efficiently together or solo.

This book covers anything you're likely going to need to know -- from what workflow is all about, to creating new Activities; from InfoPath forms to ASP.Net forms; from the Rules Engine to the object model. There's even a section on integrating Office 2003 clients with SharePoint 2007 workflows. You'll come away from reading this book with solid knowledge of how to implement workflow in the new world of Office and SharePoint.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Crutial Information about Asp.Net Task Forms is missing.......2007-09-14

Wanted to know about aspx forms dev-n-dep for sharepoint 2007 workflows. Found no code samples online [all samples online talk about infopath :-(]. From the table of contents thought that this book will be good BUT unfortunately it is NOT. It is missing a crutial information about dev-n-dep of .aspx custom TASK forms.
This book explains about custom TASK forms using InfoPath BUT NOT USING ASPX!!!
Otherwise this book is excellent from Asp.Net dev-n-dep viewpoint.

3 out of 5 stars Nice person.......2007-07-23

I read half of this book over the weekend when I didn't have the possibility to connect to the net and then it is useful. But it is a little bit to much screen dumps etc. and we inherit from this class and I don't know why or "I am not a good programmer" so for someone that wants a first introduction to Workflow in Sharepoint then this book or do some free web training can be recommended. For a deeper understanding of workflow this is not a book. Maybe that Sharepoint workflow book is not written yet.

Some good points that I like is the connection with Sharepoint Office and what the vision is as I am still having my customers running 2003 that is useful...

5 out of 5 stars All the Essentials.......2007-04-27

I agree with many of the reviews already written. This is a well organized and to the point tutorial on workflows with the Office system. I skimmed through once to get the high level overview, and dove into chapter 6 to get into designing workflows in visual studio very quickly.

As was pointed out in another review, the author is 'conversational' but I didn't feel like it hurt the book at all. I guess that is a matter of personal preference. Overall, this book was very helpful and I would highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic WF+MOSS 2007 reference.......2007-03-27

I struggled with workflows, especially integreating the webified versions into MOSS 2007 Forms Server going back to the very early beta days. While I was able to get them to work, some concepts were hazy to me. David's book brought it all together with some fantastic examples. If you're new to WF, this first section will address the core concepts... no need to go out and get another workflow book. The three chapters on creating a custom activity, creating a sequential & statemachine workflow, and making it available over the web via Forms Server are fantastic.

Only reason I'm not giving it a 5 out of 5 is because the book is very conversational. A book of this type should be more reference, not "chatty."

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding coverage of a difficult topic.......2007-03-14

I have been creating workflows in SharePoint 2007 since early in the beta. The process is challenging and - at times - frustrating. David has done an excellent job providing the details and examples necessary for developers to be successful. You will find answers in this book that are not available from any other source.

it got in at a pretty good pace but it was in a rather ugly condition.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2007-05-12

This is an excellent book for someone with a basic to moderate knowledge of office products who wants to learn more. The book does a good job of covering basic concepts and an excellent job of describing the different methods and shortcuts to perform a particular task.

5 out of 5 stars SHELLY CASHMAN'S BOOKS ARE GREAT.......2007-03-08

I have used Shelly Cashman's books since 1988. A step-by-step learning tool that you cannot go wrong with. After you used this book or any in the series you will not try another. The SAM Training Companion CD and the Fast Cards that are with the book are very helpful. The OTHER WAY BOXES AND QUICK REFERENCE SUMMARY can get you out of any situation you get yourself into. The IN THE LAB projects after each chapter are a excellent way to reinforce your skills.

When I need to learn something new or update my skills I reference Shelly Cashman Series first. Or I just do not learn it!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Practical Side of Quickbooks.......2007-09-26

Intuit products, such as Quickbooks, have excellent pull-down Help, among the best written in the software industry. Information is well indexed and clearly written with step-by-step instructions. Quickbooks also has an excellent set of video tutorials, which take about 90 minutes if you view all of them (which I recommend).

But what the Help and the video tutorials can't really do is give you advice on how to use the accounting system works in practice. How do the individual parts fit into the big picture and what are your choices, depending upon your business, for handling things like Vendor Bills, Customer Sales Receipts, petty cash, etc.? Why would you want to choose one method over another?

This is where this book comes in. Ivens answers the very practical questions that everyone has starting out. For example, should I log deposits against customer sales, or should I treat deposits as a lump sum? Why would I want choose one method over the other? This book answers this, and many other practical questions, clearly, with step-by-step instructions for each method and the rationale behind it.

I would highly recommend this book to supplement the pull-down Help and the video tutorials to answer the many practical decision that you will have to make about how to set up your system so that it will work best for you.

4 out of 5 stars QuickBooks 2007.......2007-07-29

QuickBooks is well designed for use by the financial manager of a small business. This "Official Guide" for the 2007 edition is well written and well organized.

3 out of 5 stars QuickBooks 2007 The Official Guide.......2007-05-29

I am only doing the basic functions with Quickbooks including automatic downloads from my bank. I have not used this book at all and frankly have trouble finding what I need. I feel the small guide that comes with the software and the online tuorials and 30 day free 24/7 support is adequate.

2 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Guide.......2007-05-23

Although I haven't gone very far with the Guide, it is generally a disappointment, at least for this Mac user of Quickbooks Pro. (It is possible that the Guide is intended for Windows users, but it was sold by Amazon as a package with Quickbooks Pro for the Mac. While this difference might explain problems with suggested keyboard shortcuts and depicted windows that aren't the same as those in the application, it does not excuse the shoddy index.)

The procedural sections (e.g., Do This First in the appendix) are passible. However even here, the instructions are often incorrect. For example, in Creating Accounts, the Guide instructs the user to press CNTL-A to open the accounts window, whereas the actual keyboard shortcut is Shift-Apple-A. Moreover, the two windows shown in the book to create an account are really just one (different) window in the application.

My major problem with the Guide is my inability to use it as a reference manual for answering specific questions. For example, finding specific pieces of information (e.g., how do I enter To Do Notes as Reminders?) is impossible. Even more frustrating, entries listed in the Index are incorrect. For example, if one looks up "Accrual-based accounting, About", one is directed to p.153; unfortunately, there is no reference to accrual-based accounting on page 153.

All-in-all, for those wanting more information on how to use Quickbooks Pro, I'd recommend using the Help feature in the application or the material on Intuit's web page.

5 out of 5 stars Quickbooks 2007 for Dummies.......2007-03-10

This book really helped me get a grasp on the everyday tasks of quickbooks! Definitely would recommend for a first-timer!

5 out of 5 stars Medical Manager student edition.......2007-05-06

Im so happy with the book that i recently purchase. Its quick and reliable delivery. Whenever i need a book i always check amazon coz i know i can get it from here. The books are really nice, good and reliable.

1 out of 5 stars Non-Working Disk.......2006-10-10

The disk that came with the book is a data disk only, and does not contain the program that created the data. That is why the data disk is not a workable disk, unless you have The Medical Manager installed on your computer! The book is too geared to be used with the Medical Manager Software Program, and is difficult to read it as a stand alone book.

Version 10.0 is in print now and comes with a CD-Rom which is suppose to have the complete software program and data files so it can be used as it should be, and teach medical billing and office proceedures.

4 out of 5 stars Medical Manager review.......2006-09-16

I am an instructor for the Medical Manager class and have been for over 5 years. I have used almost every version possible with the Medical Manager. This is a fairly good book for students to learn from. As long as the person reads the instructions and then looks at the exercises, they should have NO problems. However, if the person just looks at the exercise and does not read the material, they may have difficulty. Some of the exercise/pictures are different then the actual reading part but not too many. Overall this book makes it fairly simple to learn this program.

1 out of 5 stars not very good.......2006-03-26

Confusing to follow instructions for data entry.

Difficult when errors are made... the student has to get back into the previous units and figure out the correction.

There is an instructor's disk that can bring the correct data in... the student then can continnue from a specific point.

Errors in the student and instructor's text.

3 out of 5 stars Crystal Reports XI The Complete Reference.......2007-10-10

Crystal Reports XI: The Complete Reference (Complete Reference Series)

So far I have found it useful on the job.

Of course, it could have more examples at a level a step or two above the obvious.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for the Seasoned Professional.......2007-08-31

This book provides an excellent reference for Crystal Reports developers. If you utilized Business Intelligence's online training and did not receive any of the handouts or materials, this book covers not only what was taight in the courses but more detailed examples. This is a great resource even for the experienced developer.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference book for any serious Crystal developer.......2007-04-28

I have worked with Crystal Reports since version 8.5 and for about 4 years now. I am currently a Crystal Reports developer and create reports all day for my job. This book is a great tool for learning and provides me access to all the Crystal Syntax functions and other hard to reference materials. This book is also very in-depth and will provide a total knowledge to someone just learning.

The hardest thing with Crystal is that buidling reports is more an art form then science considering the vast amount of options the developer has to solve any given business problem. The best way to learn is get this book and dive in to making reports.

5 out of 5 stars crystal ix review.......2006-07-08

Great book, am learning on my own crystal reports and this book has met my needs and expectations.

4 out of 5 stars Standard Revision of Solid Reference.......2006-06-15

The text is one of the first available for Crystal Reports XI, and is largely a revision of the same material which has been presented in previous editions (which covered earlier versions of Crystal Reports). As you would expect, it does a solid job of covering all the basics. It even goes into some intermediate details in a few sections.

If you are a beginner to Crystal Reports, then the book will be a valuable reference to you. If you're an experienced Crystal Reports developer or you have used previous versions of Crystal Reports, then this book will not get much use. The book does not have many "hints" or "secret tips" that make developing in Crystal Reports easier. However, the amount of material covered is good in that there is not much left out entirely, so even an advanced developer will find bits of useful information, particularly when using Crystal Reports in new ways or on new platforms, etc. For example, the new features presented in Crystal Reports XI are covered in considerable detail, particularly the various methods of implementing new report parameter features. And, thankfully, the sections detailing now-deprecated software components have been removed or minimized.

If you're familiar with the earlier renditions of this book (i.e., for Crystal Reports version 10, etc.), then you will find this rendition exactly as expected.

3 out of 5 stars Office 2007 Inside/Out.......2007-09-26

This book is pretty good for somebody that doesn't know anything about using Microsoft Office. If you are an advanced user, this book is too basic.

5 out of 5 stars The eBook is GREAT!.......2007-08-28

I find myself buying the InsideOut series, even if I have other books on a topic, because of the included eBook. I love the fact that I always have the information on my computer and can search it for whatever I need. This book is not very detailed, but it helped me with relative references in Excel just last week. I opened the eBook, searched for "relative reference" and found what I needed. Paid for the book, in my opinion. Oh, and I use the hardcover to page through and look for new information, when I have the time.
