Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is lying low in Key West, digging up swimming pools by hand. He is not at all pleased when a private detective starts asking questions about him. But when the detective, Costello, turns up dead with his fingertips sliced off, Reacher realizes it is time to move on.
As in Lee Child's two previous thrillers, Die Trying and Killing Floor, Reacher is soon up to his neck in lethal trouble, this time involving a vicious Wall Street manipulator, a mysterious woman (of course), and the livelihood of a whole community. Even the fate of soldiers missing in action in Vietnam is stirred into the brew.
But this is not a book by one of the new breed of U.S. thriller writers. Child prides himself on his ability, as an Englishman, to write American thrillers that are utterly convincing in milieu and toughness of action, without a trace of English sensibility. Tripwire is no exception. Every bit as lean and compulsive as its predecessors, it also builds on the freshest aspect of those books: Reacher may be a tough, epic hero, but he always remains human and vulnerable. --Barry Forshaw
Book Description
The New York Times bestselling author of Killing Floor and Die Trying returns with a new Jack Reacher thriller-in which a labrynthine trail of murder leads Jack straight into a trap...set by the most vicious opponent he's ever faced.
Customer Reviews:
Hack job but a fun read.......2007-09-10
You don't read a Child novel to experience great pros or a classic novel of immense proportions. You read Child to escape into a simple world with easy to understand characters and easy to follow plot lines with enough twists and enough heroics to make you turn the page. Such is the case with Jack Reacher who finds himself embroiled in another messy situation with Captain Hook for a villain and the standard love interest that is also smart and sassy. I had immense fun reading the novel and burying my worries inside of this work of fiction. Yes there are sentence fragments all over the place and yes some of the dialog needed a rewrite but after all Child is there to entertain.
My one pet peeve would be to abandon two major characters -- the stone family. That's part of the problem of throwing this together in a hurry. It's sloppy on Child's part even though we can predict what would happen to them. This is airport reading material and nothing more but it's still a great ride.
Big Change--Not a Good Ending........2007-08-19
I am reading the Jack Reacher series in order. This is the third I have read and this is weakest. Lee Child writes a great story and this moves well but it lacks in suspense and there is no real ending. I wonder if in writing this Child was wondering whether to end the series. As one reviewer says there is no explanation of any of the parts of the story. For example it is hard to understand why Hobes stayed around. We do not know what happens to the Stones.
Same Formula Different Book.......2007-08-09
If you have read any of the other Reacher novels you know exactly what to expect. Reacher is the ultimate embodiment of the lone-hero archetype. He is nearly super human in strength. He gets pulled in to a situation completely by fate, and in the end must destroy a character that is evil beyond human comprehension. There is also the obligatory female character that he feels a strong affinity towards. This of course leads to super human stamina in the bedroom. Nothing graphic of course, everything is tastefully implied.
Yet with all of that said, this is one of the better Reacher novels. The plot is paced nicely. Reacher's skills of deduction seem human instead of super-human. There is a believable tension between Reacher and the female character. It isn't the sudden lust seen in most of the novels. It carries a good plot and pace for an action/thriller plus shows Reacher at his most human emotionally.
Hard Work.......2007-07-18
This is the first of Child's books I have read and I can't say it has inspired me to read any more. There is a good story hiding somewhere in between the dense description, but by about half way through it becomes so tiresome getting there that I lost all sympathy with the characters. Child is able to spend pages describing the simple act of getting ready for bed, and many sections, even chapters, fail to advance the plot in any way.
The plot itself is pretty transparent, there are no twists waiting for us along the way - we are given everything on a plate pretty early on then tortured to sit through over 500 pages for it to play out. If two hundred pages had been shaved off, Child would have had a great book on his hands - my blame lies with the editor on this one.
At times the characters are interesting, but most of the time they act in unnatural ways to contrive future action, or to spell out exposition for the reader. Child is clearly a writer who is into detail, but he has gone way too far here and left nothing for the most important part of any book - imagination.
Totally unreal and boring.......2007-07-15
The plot and the characters are totally unreal. The characters also lack depth, are uninteresting and very often behave in a non rational, unreal way. Nobody, under extreme threat and blackmail, talk to a friend or call the police!
You soon get bored, do not believe the plot, and get bothered by the author attitude to try to keep you wired.... with pages and pages of silly, detailed and useless descriptions of offices, clothes, traffic lines, airplane seats, and so on.
The main bad character, Mr Hobie, would be perfect for a Spider Man or The Fantastic Four cartoon.
For me, it is for sure the first and last thriller of Mr Child.
I also resent his adolescent like admiration for armies and weapons.

Less than Average Book on an Ideal Place.......2007-04-12
This is the 11th edition of this book on all info that is the Florida Keys and the glorious Key West. I have the 10th edition and only out of laziness did not return this one.
I frequent Key West often and many changes that have taken place there at guesthouses or restaurants are not documented in the least. The book is basically a word for word of the last edition. One restaurant moved locations over a year ago and they still have it as listed at the old location.
Key West is a beautiful, eccentric place and all walks of life mingle together here in a virtual paradise. It is very liberal and the authors are definitely very conservative. The reviews are definitely written with their bias.
As an average overview of restaurants, lodgings, shopping and history the book is ok and I would review it as such but when I know of changes that are very clear if in Key West and they aren't here - then I must reflect the laziness of the author in this review.
She supposedly lives in Key West and it seems she only noticed the changes in places she frequents. This book is not an excellent overview for all.
There are other and better books. Also, if you have a previous edition then definitely think twice before buying this one.
Customer Reviews:
not what I thought it was.......2007-01-03
I expected the book to be about lifestyle not house design. It seem typical for what has become of Key West - overbuilt, with a narrow view on style. Key West style to me is an internal thing, not how a house looks or is furnished! I returned this product.
Great pictures and history.......2006-05-18
I have been to Key West several times and love it. This book brings back memories of my trips. The pictures are gorgeous and the reading includes historical information - very enjoyable to read. The back section includes home plans of various styles of Key West homes. My only complaint is I wish the pictures that correspond with the home plans were actually pictures like the rest of the book (they are renderings).
Living in the Key West Style Anywhere.......2004-08-11
An excellent book. Wonderful pictures; easy to understand layout and design information and lots of extra information about things local .
This can be a easy to follow guide to designing a house for anyplace as well as for those who want to learn more about Key West (whether you live here or not).
Great as a gift for those relatives and friends who live where it is cold!! (or at least not in Key West!)
Unique Book.......2004-07-23
This is a very unique look at Key West's house's and neighborhoods. Key West Style really educated me on the the interior archicture, floor plans and history. the book will be useful for anyone want information about Key West or considering remodeling a home to incorporat some of the charming features.

Through his work at la Marina, Casa de Campo, Gian Franco Fini captures the essence of refined architecture with a perfect air of Caribbean elegance.
A place to visit before you dies........2007-04-10
This is a book about one of those magical places that once you get there you don't want to leave. It's in the path of boats coming from Miami to the West Indies and is the place to see in the Caribbean before you die. Casa de Campo is the Caribbean most complete resort by far where any possible hobby in the world could practiced at world renowned conditions -besides skiing, except if you change it for water-sky-. The book about the Casa de Campo's Marina is definitely a 5 start in class, quality and content. This is the real thing in Caribbean Elegance and Luxury where you'll be able to find some of the most exclusive houses in the region.
The Best Keep Secret in the Caribbean unveils........2007-03-02
This is the only book available about Marinas from an architectural standpoint. Blueprints, sketches and more than 300 full-color pictures are a never ending source for one of the most luxurious approach to Caribbean Architecture. It's about the renowned Marina at Casa de Campo, La Romana, Dominican Republic and is a must for anyone willing see from the inside out as many options as possible to recreate a tropical paradise despite if it's and apartment or a houses under 2,000 sqf or a masterpiece above 20,000 sqf.
In contrast with W.R. Blain's book for "Marina Developments" -That is an excellent and maybe the only book about Marinas from a structural standpoint- this one is an architectural approach to Marinas and all the elements around it such as Yacht Club, Apartments, Houses, Restaurants and all related services. It's full of details and references in a text that is catchy and easy to read. My only concern was that I thought it was pricy in the first place despite that it was printed and bounded in Italy, but Blain's book is above the $250 and this one is more related to interior design and architecture so it's worth 5 out 5 starts.

Well crafted........2006-09-10
Shaw Chandler and Trula Montoya were high school sweethearts growing up in Key West. But they went their separate ways. Shaw became a paramedic in Miami and Trula an actress in New York. Now, some twenty years later, they are both compelled to return to their hometown because of a sinister mystery that has darkened their lives.
Bones of Coral by James W. Hall is a marvelous novel. The very "readable" narrative contains a number of insightful passages about life, love and happiness. The characters are vividly drawn and the intricate plot unfolds in a way that is both smooth and satisfying. Of course no modern South Florida mystery would be complete without some bizarre, over-the-top characters to infuse the proceedings with a black comedy aspect. And Bones of Coral has its share of those. At the top of the list is Dougie Barnes a dull witted, cold blooded killer who speaks in rhymes and is quite proud of his freakishly high threshold for pain.
This is a remarkably well crafted novel that succeeds in telling an interesting story in an artful and satisfying manner. Highly recommended.
Touching, grim and very funny.......2006-07-07
My #1 James Hall product; the kind of book I re-read probably once a year, just to remind myself how to create characters. In here he covers not only the spectrum of human characteristics, but also of emotions--from rage to joy--and human virtues and depravities.
Highly recommended reading; not just for fans of this particular genre. A very 'moralistic' work; more so than his others----with the moralizing well concealed under a story that alters between bizarre, funny, harrowing and very touching.
Till Noever, owlglass.com
Nobody does it like James W Hall!.......1999-01-22
James W Hall has a knack for creating quirky characters and sleazy bad guys. In this book, he has outdone himself with Dougie Barnes, a dimwitted, muscle-bound, rhyme-spouting, trash-talking thug with an appetite for murder and sex. If you think he's bad, wait until you meet his dad, Douglas, Sr.
In Bones of Coral, ambulance paramedic Shaw Chandler of Miami finds his long lost dad dead in an apparent suicide. Then he gets a frantic call from his Mom. The next thing you know, Shaw is headed to his hometown of Key West to learn the truth about his dad's death and some startling discoveries about his past. James W Hall is an excellent story teller and Bones of Coral is a knock down thriller that will stay with you long after you put it down.
FIVE STARS!!
what happens when a poet writes a adventure.......1998-11-15
Hall has the ability to bring you right into setting and engross the reader in the story. As in all of his books, he always has great villians and that is the fun part of the book.
A Fine Suspense.......1998-09-30
James W. Hall not only tells an intriguing story, but his quality of writing is superior to most in this genre.

Great Keys Book.......2006-02-17
We used this extensively on our travels to the Keys and gunkholed all over the place, including the Fla Bay, Flamingo. A must have book
Book Description
The romantic elements that define the traditional southern cottage-a picturesque picket fence, a breezy sleeping porch, and well-worn heirloom furnishings-have made these small homes perennially stylish. The Southern Cottage showcases the best cozy dwellings in popular seasonal destinations-from the mountains in Virginia and North Carolina to Florida's Panhandle shores and the coast and islands of South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Louisiana. A pristine Victorian lake house and a rustic mountaintop retreat express two moods of escape in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Summer beachside cottages include a colorful Key West home and a century-old family Florida retreat that captures informal old-fashioned spirit. Examples of 19th- and early 20th-century cottages reveal ways in which these diminutive houses satisfy the need for privacy as well as communal living. With tantalizing photographs of shaded porches, stone paths lined with flowers, and wicker-filled rooms, this is an inspiration for those who want their getaway home to evoke the timeless charm of southern living.

Southern Cottages .......2007-09-06
This was an absolute page turner for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful pictures and descriptive dialog. The photos were amazing and were varied with many interior, exterior and garden shots. The only dissapointment was coming to the end!
Fascinating subject:).......2007-05-23
Ever since I purchased a turn of the century farmhouse I have been a bit obsessed w/ reading about the history and culture of the south. I enjoyed this book and the photos but most of all I love reading about the people who choose to live a simple life:)There is something magical about this way of life. I feel so lucky to experience living in a historic home and I enjoyed reading the reviewer's home featured in the book! OMG!!!! It is an honor! CONGRATS!!!! I googled and made trips to the local museum in my area and found my farmhouse written about in a history book and it is thrilling beyond words! Hope someday the author chooses to write "The Southern Farmhouse" Hint!:)
A Treasure.......2007-05-08
Susan Sully's "The Southern Cottage" is a beautifully written book, illustrated with stunning photographs of eighteen charming cottages. In the spirit of full disclosure, my home is featured in the book (four pages of text and eight photos). I had never met Susan before she visited me last year. An officer of our local Preservation Society recommended my home, a mid-nineteenth century "story-and-a-jump" cottage rehabilitated to historic preservation standards, to her.
Susan's photos show my house as it is. All of the furniture and other items in her pictures are mine, ones that I use daily. Sometimes I sit in my parlor with Susan's book open on my lap, and think, "what a wonderful testimony to the love and care we've shown to this historic old house."
In addition to capturing the spirit of my house in photographs, Susan has written several pages describing the house (it belonged to my grandparents), our family history (including colonial settlers, sea captains, and shipwrecks), and life today on a barrier island.
So far I have read only a few other sections (each cottage has its own chapter), but if the book captures the spirit of every house as faithfully as mine (and I have every reason to believe it does) this is a book worthy of any bookshelf.

could have been better.......2006-04-28
"Stranded" is about a girl in seventh grade living on a boat. Before the book starts, she was in an accident that cost her her right foot. Koby feels that the other kids at her school treat her differently than everybody else because instead of a foot, she now has a mechanical strap-on leg she calls her "leggy". If you're grossed out easily, I wouldn't recommend this book.
Koby (the girl) finds injured whales she wants to help, but, when she tells her parents about them, they don't believe that she ever found them. Her parents argue and within the first several pages, her mom moves ashore and takes Koby with her. But Koby continues to go out searching for the whales. Once she knows where they are, she asks her mysterious friend, a retired sea captain named Nickeljack, for something to put on the whales' injuries, but when she finds them they are even more hurt and beached. She spends the night trying to keep them alive. When the Coast Guard (which had been put on alert by Koby's mom) found her the next morning, she was filthy and cold, but the whales were alive. The story becomes more complex after this. This book is about how Koby deals with her leg problem, her parents, and the whales who need her help.
Personally, I thought this book could have been better. A lot better. She may be in seventh grade, but Koby acts like she is six years old. She makes a huge deal out of her missing leg, and how her "leggy" isn't the same as her old leg. Also, it's too convenient that she finds the whales on the same day that her mom moved out.
The book is supposed to be written from Koby's perspective, but in the book's dialogue Koby refers to her parents as "mom" and "dad." This book is great for anyone facing a dilemma involving a missing limb, because it goes into great detail about her mental struggle, and how she overcame it. It's also good for anyone (though it's unlikely) who found an injured whale and doesn't know what to do. From my position, though, it is not a great book. I wouldn't advise it to most people.

Stranded.......2006-04-28
The main character of this book was a girl named Koby who loved ocean. Koby meets lot of difficulties with her parents fighting and arguing over and over again. Koby is a girl that thinks that she is alone. In her mind she thinks everybody at her school hates her because she got into an accident that made her lose a right foot that had to be replaced by a wood in a form of a foot. She had many troubles along the way to the end by how she had a wooden foot. Koby lost her foot when she was eight years old but this story is about her when she is now twelve.
During the story she meets pilot whales. She tries to help the whales but she took very long time to earn their trust to help them. Koby couldn't leave them alone because they were badly hurt. The author wrote this story to express how hard and harsh it would be for a girl to live with a permanent space between her right foot and her shoe.
I thought this story was pretty well made how Koby dealt with pilot whales and her parents. The book made me think of my grandma on my dad's side because she lost her whole left knee down to her toes and now she's on an electric wheel chair. I liked how Koby never gave up on things during the story. I didn't like how Koby called her right wooden foot. I recommend this book for people who love whales and animals. So if you are even 1% interested in this book read the STRANDED!
Review od Stranded.......2006-04-27
Koby, a young girl, has to live her life missing a foot and having parents that fight all the time, often about her, and to top it all off, she has no friends. The only thing that can set her free is dinghy and being out on the open ocean. But when Koby finds herself stranded with two pilot whales, her life changes greatly.
I think this is a great book that captures you and takes you on a journey about a small girl making a big difference. This story is a wonderful story about friends that Koby never thought she'd have.
If you like stories about adventure, friends, and animals, you'll love this book.

Stranded
By: Ben Mikaelsen This book, named Stranded, is one of the greatest book I ever read. This book pulled me into the book cause it was amazing. It grabed my attention. So I kept on reading the book and it got better and better. It was about a girl named Koby. She has one leg that is fake. She moves into a new school and a has no friends there. Everyone looks at her cause she's the only one with a fake leg. She gets frustrated at them looking at her leg. She got used to it so after few days she forgot about it and no one looked at her fake leg. She is one of those people who doesn't give up if they fail. They just try their best. She has no friends at this school. After school she goes and finds a stranded dolphin on the beach. She takes care of it. She is really good at taking care of animals. What will she do?
I like this book because of many things. The book is interesting, fun, wild, and has lots of things in common with me.
I like it cause she helps other animals and tries to do other thigs too, like bringing their family together and getting some friends."Dad, I want to help." Koby just wanted to get her parents together, get friends, and save the dolphins. She is just caring about everything. She is just a kid. That is why I like this book.
I dislike this book because it was sad and mean. Koby couldn't get any friends. She was new so no one liked her. They always stared at her fake leg. It was so sad. How would it feel? If you were Koby and you had no friends how would you react? It is so sad. She is just trying to fit in the school and people don't welcome her and they make her sad. What bad friends. That is so mean. I would tell my mother to move out of her. It is so sad and mean. "Koby walked up,a couple of girlsturned and noticed her exposed leggy. They smiled."
My favorite part of this book was when she was having P.E. and there was an activity she was good at. The captain was the most popular girl in school, Becky, chose Koby 7th pick. Their team was losing and Koby caught up and won the race. They were so happy to win. They got to be friends and were really close friends after that. Koby was so happy. That was my favorite part of the book.
