I love this book. It makes the writing workshop experience enjoyable. I went through Lucy Calkins training and then found Katie Ray and it all started to work together.
The best book on Writing Workshop that I've read........2003-06-20
If you can only get one book on teaching writing using the Writer's Workshop model let it be this one. It's detailed, full of practical tips, but most important--you will be INSPIRED! I immediately started my own writer's notebook after I read this book. One caveat...this is not a book that you can pick up on Sunday night because you want to start the program on Monday morning. This book is written to be read and re-read, pondered and poured over. That having been said, this is NOT just a book of theory, it thoroughly and lovingly explains all the nuts-and-bolts of the workshop.
Book Description
Donna Leon opens doors to the hidden Venice like no one else. With her latest novel, Through a Glass, Darkly, Leon takes us inside the secretive island of Murano, home of the world-famous glass factories. On a luminous spring day in Venice, Commissario Brunetti and his assistant Vianello play hooky from the Questura in order to help Vianello's friend Marco Ribetti, arrested during an environmental protest. They secure his release, only to be faced by the fury of the man's father-in-law, Giovanni De Cal, a cantankerous glass factory owner who has been heard in the bars of Murano making violent threats about Ribetti. Brunetti's curiosity is piqued, and he finds himself drawn to Murano to investigate. Is De Cal the type of man to carry out his threats? Then one morning the body of De Cal's night watchman is found. Over long lunches, on secret boat rides, in quiet bars, and down narrow streets, Brunetti searches for the killer. Will he unravel the clues before the night watchman's death is allowed to be forgotten?
A fascinating novel set in the intersection between tourism and native Venetian society, Through a Glass, Darkly is Donna Leon at her finest.

You've heard of Italian "slow food"? Now welcome the Venetian "slow book".......2007-05-24
As someone who is interested in Italy and books, it was only a matter of time before I read a Commissario Brunetti tale. But I guess I should have done my homework first, as it seems that this was probably the wrong place to start. Sheesh, even devoted Donna Leon fans seem upset about THROUGH A GLASS, DARKLY.
This is not to diminish Donna Leon's novel too much. It is a pleasant read, with interesting asides about Italy, its culture, and the environmental challenges it faces. But it's telling that I made a note of page 110. That is the first place where anything that could be called "action" takes place. And what happens there? Some glass blowers blow glass. So while I enjoyed this book, it may provide too phlegmatic of a plot for many readers, and it is apparently the wrong place for first-timers to begin.
Highly Recommended: The Shape of Water and the other Inspector Maltalbano books by the extraordinary Sicilian, Andrea Camilleri.
Way under par.......2007-05-07
I previously read A Noble Radiance by the same author and enjoyed it. I grabbed this book while away on business when I finished the other book I was reading. The only good thing to say is that this novel helped me go sleep quickly.
The plot meanders and is not very interesting. Brunetti is basically investigating a threat to someone which gets his foot in the door when something finally happens. Basically, the first half of the book is about something which is only marginally related to the dead body. I struggled to finish the book and will not put it in the pile of books for my wife to read. Instead, it is going in the giveaway pile.
Deadly glass.......2007-03-04
Inspector Vianello asks his boss, Commissario Brunetti to help him obtain the release of one of his friends who was arrested at a demonstration protesting the chemical pollution of the canals of Venice. This leads them into the investigation of the murder of a worker at a glass blowing factory in Murano, the world famous home of the glass blowing industry. The main culprit seems likely to be the owner of one of the factories, a choleric old man who is convinced that his old ways of getting rid of the residue of his business isn't harmful to anyone and who refuses to bend to any new, environmentally friendly rules. What follows is a story of greed, lust for political power and one of Donna Leon's usual great reads about the exploits of the Venetian police officer, Commissario Brunetti and the every day life of the people of Venice.
Another excellent Commissario Brunetti myster.......2007-01-21
Donna Leon not only writes a good mystery tale, but she shows you a picture of Venice and of the people who live there; their attitudes and beliefs. It is refreshing to have the main character in a strong marriage with normal teenagers interacting positively. In this story, Ms. Leon lets you decide in your own mind about the mystery involved, but she deals with some very important issues that the world should be considering. She has developed and strenghtened her characters through her novels, and you anticipate what is happening. She does a have a cynical attitude toward politicians and politics, which is also true worldwide. Commissario Brunetti, in this story, tackles a difficult death in a caring manner. One of the enjoyable characters, Signorina Elettra, continues her control of gathering information, as she has also gained importance through the book series. I strongly recommend this book to those who enjoy a good mystery set among people who have to deal with death and narrow-minded people.
The first Donna Leon book I haven't finished - and don't plan to........2007-01-20
Donna Leon must have cooking something when she wrote this book. It was like she kept checking to see if the something was done in the oven and came back and wrote a chapter to a different book. Some chapters seems totally unrelated to the book. Characters get mentioned and when I thumbed back to see who she was talking about, I couldn't find them. How can someone write such a great series of books and then totally bomb?!! It is a limp and tired story involving an environmental problem at a glass factory. Donna needs a vacation...from Venice!
PS. I never finished the book - it just isn't interesting.

Careful, this con-mans firm was shut down by the SEC.......2004-06-21
According to published articles, D. H. Blair & Co. was a training ground for the "pump and dump.
In this strategy, prices for an IPO are artificially "pumped" by a group of brokers who control the shares by creating demand selling to each others' customers in a closed artificial market. Once the price increased, the insiders dump while the unsuspecting retail clients are aggressively encouraged to hold their shares and not sell. After the insiders have dumped their shares, the cold calling stops and because there is no longer support for the price, the shares free-fall as the brokers move onto the next issue.
On March 7, 2002, in an action before the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York, Blair pled guilty and was convicted of three counts of violating the Martin Act-the New York state securities law
-
Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau announced today the stock fraud indictment of securities firm D.H. BLAIR & CO., INC., and fifteen of its officers and employees for enterprise corruption. Included among those indicted are KENTON WOOD, the Chairman of the firm; ALAN STAHLER and KALMAN RENOV, the firm's Vice Chairmen; VITO CAPOTORTO, the head trader of the firm; ALFRED PALAGONIA, the top-producing broker for the firm; and ten other Blair brokers. In addition, three other former D.H. Blair brokers have pleaded guilty to felony charges arising from this investigation.
The sixteen defendants have all been indicted for Enterprise Corruption, Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree, and securities fraud in violation of the New York State General Business Law. The Grand Jury alleged additional pattern acts, including perjury and violation of New York's antitrust law. Various defendants were also indicted for Grand Larceny in the Third Degree and Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree. The Enterprise Corruption charge, which is punishable by up to twenty-five years' imprisonment, alleges that managers and stockbrokers at D.H. Blair ran the business as a criminal enterprise.
The 173-count indictment charges that the defendants participated in the "D.H. Blair Criminal Enterprise" from 1989 through 1998, and that the members of the scheme defrauded numerous people - including their own customers, other investors, other brokerage firms, and securities regulators - in order to realize massive illicit profits. Members of the D.H. Blair Criminal Enterprise conspired to commit, and did commit, a variety of crimes to advance their common criminal purpose. They manipulated stock prices -- including securities being offered in initial public offerings ("IPOs") -- for the benefit of the firm, certain favored customers, stockbrokers, and other people associated with D.H. Blair. They engaged in a wide range of illegal and high-pressure sales practices to generate excessive commissions and to facilitate the manipulation of stock prices. In addition, they illegally colluded with other securities firms to manipulate stock prices. They fraudulently increased commissions by selling securities to customers at far more than prevailing market prices. They increased the size of the firm's customer base by trafficking in client information stolen from other firms and by opening accounts for customers whom they knew were not suitable for the kind of high-risk securities marketed by D.H. Blair.
More than 50,000 customers invested with D.H. Blair & Co., Inc. during the period of the existence of the D.H. Blair Criminal Enterprise. Many suffered severe economic losses as a result of the criminal conduct of the enterprise. For example, a 56 year-old disabled man from Colorado lost approximately $150,000 from a disability settlement upon which he relied to pay for medicine and other living expenses; he was given false price predictions and so-called "inside" information which did not pan out. Another investor, a 63 year-old disabled racetrack worker living on a fixed income in Manhattan, lost $35,000 of a $38,000 IRA due to unauthorized purchases in her account and refusals to sell. A tugboat pilot from Brooklyn lost the $45,000 she had saved to buy a house; while she was at sea, unauthorized trades were made in her account and when she complained she was falsely assured that she would be the recipient of windfall future profits. Another Blair customer, a 70 year-old Florida resident who had retired as a trumpet player for the New York Philharmonic, lost approximately $250,000 from his IRA and trust accounts due to false price guarantees and high pressure tactics designed to prevent him from selling.
D.H. Blair made large profits by fraudulently distributing and manipulating the securities of companies that had been brought public by its associated investment banking firm. In 1996, for example, the brokerage firm made gross profits of over $85 million from such over-the-counter securities trading. The indictment charges that among the IPOs that the D.H. Blair Criminal Enterprise fraudulently sold and manipulated were Amerigon, Inc., Telepad Corp., Premier Laser Systems, Inc., Interactive Flight Technologies, Inc., Sepregen Corp., Food Court Entertainment Network, Inc., Titan Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Digital Video Systems, Inc., Conversion Technologies International, Inc., and Advanced Aerodynamics and Structures, Inc.
In order to commit these crimes and evade detection, members of the D.H. Blair Criminal Enterprise falsified business records, suppressed customer complaints, hid illegal practices, gave false and evasive testimony, and otherwise misled regulators charged with enforcing the laws and rules governing the securities industry, including the United States Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") and the National Association of Securities Dealers ("NASD").
Morty's stock advice is like Tiger Woods'golf advice..........2000-07-23
I know the author personally,he gave me my "shot" on Wall St.when I was 18 years old. There are a lot of "empty suits" that have written books on investing,I promise you Morty is not one of them. If you love facts as I do regarding investments...buy this book it will be of value to you.
Hard Knocks to Hot Stocks.......1999-12-23
In reading the book I found the first half some what hard to get through. I was looking towards getting the info he was to give on investing. The second half of the book was what I was looking for. If you use his discipline in trading you could make alot of money in the market. I would recommended it just to have a base to use in your stock trading methods.
This book's a winner- it will make you a winner too!.......1998-02-25
Larry King's review (on the back cover) said it best, "this is the best book I've ever read on making it big. You're in the hands of a master. Enjoy!"

I can't wait to call my broker and start using the techniques on a portion of my portfolio. The humor and simple strategies make this a book that all will enjoy. I will be sure to include it as a gift idea for many of my friends.

For All Ages.......2006-12-31
I found this book to be written in a simple, straightforward manner that applies to all ages.
I especially liked the chapter on supporting those who are in a state of grief. The book is beautifully written and uplifting for all ages. My wife of 33 years recently died and this book gave me more aid and solace than the more sophisticated writings recommended by my grief support group.
I would advise any person from adult teen to older adult to purchase this book.
Get This Book for the Grieving Teen in Your Life.......2002-12-15
I work with grieving teens and whenever possible, I give them a copy of this book. Every page has a gem that can help them sort through their feelings and experiences. All of the children have told me this book really helps them. It is written in large print with pictures, poems, and sayings throughout making it extremely accessible for a grieving teen (or adult, for that matter). It is one of the very best books written for grieving teens. I recommend it highly.
Thank you to Earl Hipp.......2000-05-18
I just wanted you to know that both my teens have read your book, "Help for the Hard Times". It was the only book on loss that really made them feel like it spoke to their true feelings. I can't thank you enough for writing such a wonderful book. I am recently widowed, and until I discovered your book, I was desperately searching. I bought an extra copy and donated it to my school district. I am a MSW graduate student at Fordham University. I eventually hope to work in the public school system. You can bet your book will be on the shelf along with my other resources.
Great for adults too!.......1999-01-13
I recently read the book, Help for the Hard Times, Getting Through Loss." I am a divorced mother of two great kids 13 and 18. I was divorced after 21 years of marriage. I went looking for a book I could give to my kids to help hem deal with their own issues of loss revolving around the divorce. I went through my own hard times, and in fact am just now after 3 years reaching the healing times. Unfortunately, my kids grief is just now showing up in ways that until now went unrecognized by them or me. I have to say that this book was very enlightening to me and therefore just can't loose with my kids. I will read it together with my 13-year-old, and give it to my 18-year-old to read on her own. This kind of nuts and bolts help can be very helpful to people of all ages, not just the kids. Sometimes we have to go back to the basics in order to heal an overloaded loss pot, and recognizing the stages is a great start.

Oustanding outline.......2005-12-14
This brief book is aimed at high school students, but speaks to anyone learning at any stage of life. That ought to be just about everyone.
Its formal, no-nonsense tone closely matches its content, a school-masterly essay on schooling. Armstrong starts by pointing out the number of hours spent in school. If a carpenter set out to build houses single-handedly, he'd be well into the third using only the hours a child spends in K-12 education. Does the student have as much to show for the time spent? If not, why not, and what can be done to fix that problem?
Armstrong starts with the basics: reading and writing. Reading doesn't just mean recognizing each word on the page, it means taking in the information, disgesting it, and incorporating it into oneself as thoroughly as one digests a sandwich and incorporates it into the body's tissues. The goal is to bring the information back to life, not just to treat it as dead facts on paper from dead trees. Writing is the other half of the text. I've seen it again and again: someone who can't express an idea is as ineffective as someone who doesn't even have one.
Only a third of the book remains after that discussion, which Armstrong dedicates to specific tips for studying languages, math, science, and history. He generally handles these topics thoroughly and evenly, except for some weakness in the science and math sections and some zealotry regarding history. Well, he was a history teacher - if conveyed only a tenth of his passion to his students, that was a hundred times more than my history teachers ever got across. I criticize this part of the book only for ignoring the arts. They demand all the concentration and study that math and science do, but the study differs slightly in kind - and no, it's not "just natural," any more than learning French or calculus.
My only criticism is that the text aged. The first edition apparently dates to the 1960s - none of the references seem newer than the late 1950s. As a result, the discussion misses the entire computer age. Yes, there may be some somatic sense in writing with a pencil that can't be replicated at a keyboard, but the whole process of editing and revision has changed since then. Also, his praise for the "new math" seems more like a perfunctory show of support for his colleagues. In retrospect, it caused more problems than it solved.
These are minor points, though, and don't detract from the main discussion. I recommmend it to any student and any teacher, including the self-taught student.

Great Tips for Studying!.......2005-06-12
Next year I will be entering a hard high-school where good study habits are required in order to get a passing grade. I would study for hours, and yet, get an unsatisfactory grade on my papers. So, when I was in Barnes and Noble, I picked it up. This informative book by Mr. Armstrong was very helpful and gave great ways to study better and learn to have good study habits. I would recommend this book to all who have a hard time studying.
"Before the Gates of Excellence the High Gods Have Placed.......2004-07-05
Sweat ... ."
This passage from the Greek Poet Hesiod (which concludes: Long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning) is the core message of this book. It is also the passage that was posted on William H. Armstrong's classroom wall for over 30 years. This book and the work ethic instilled by Mr. Armstrong in his classroom did change my life to a very good degree. It took longer for the lessons imparted here to sink in on me than on others but they were there when I needed them once I got to college.
Study is Hard Work, as its title suggests, pulls no punches. It is direct and to the point. Excellence is not easy. It takes work and organization. Mix well and repeat! Mr. Armstrong sets out a number of excellent suggestions which, when read, cause you to smack your head and say - "how obvious". Obvious yes, but overlooked or forgotten until seen in print in simple declarative sentences. The fact that study is hard work is an important lesson for children, particularly bright children, to learn as they move from elementary to middle school and then on to high school and college. Ones ability to thrive on sheer native intelligence alone gets more difficult each step of the way. This book serves as preparation for the increased level of sheer work that is involved in maintaining that level of excellence. It is similar to a dentist advising you "this may hurt a bit". Foreknowledge is a valuable tool.
As has been noted, Mr. Armstrong's approach may seem a bit blunt in today's environment. That fact alone seems a compelling reason to read the book. The fact that the suggestions noted in the book may seem a bit dated provides those children who can absorb these lessons with a valuable competitive edge in our increasingly competitive school and work environment.
I have recently purchased this book along with a teacher's lesson plan book, another organizational tool used by Mr. Armstrong, for my daughter. It is a book worth buying. It is a book worth going over with your children even if, as with the dentist, it hurts a bit.
It's been around for a while, but it's advice is timeless..........2003-04-03
William Armstrong's small work is a great way for all life-long students to understand what it takes to streamline techniques for higher learning. Although many might fault the book for it's brevity and say that the author doesn't go into enough detail, I felt the author's advice was very pertinent, and very self-explanatory. His 50 year experience in teaching shines through with a gently guiding hand, placing the responsibility in the hands of each student. There are no tricks that are presented here, as indicated by the very name of the work. So, whether you're looking for ways to succeed in that upcoming course that's supposed to be tough or just trying to brush up on ways to maximize your efforts in a lifetime of learning, you're definitely on the right track, by reading this one.
One other thing to keep in mind, because the author wrote this work so long ago, it provides a great baseline in it's fundamental principles. I would also suggest Adam Robinson's "What Smart Students Know" to supplement the principles introduced in "Studying is Hard Work". Robinson's work has some more methodology and covers some more modern principles like memorization and the use of "hooks". Good luck in your learning!
This book should be required study.......2001-03-21
Sure wish I had known this book was available in our local library since 1957. I sure could have use it when I was in highschool in the 70s. Our schools' teachers should all read this and begin disseminating it to students beginning when they begin school.
Since most schools send out newsletters to parents/guardians of students the same book should be made known to them to read on their own with the notation that these principles will be what is presented to their children as guides to become the best student they can be. As parents are a child's first and best teacher, reading this book will prepare your child for school as you will likely begin to follow these principles and pass them on to your children without much effort.
Too many letters go out telling parents to become involved in their children's schooling...but the why and how isn't there. This book is the why and the how. I'll be writing a letter to the editor of our local weekly newspaper as well as to several other daily papers that our community subscribes to so that those wishing to improve their study skills will know they have a means to do so.
I doubt any other study books compare as this one has all that is necessary to make a person realize it is within oneself to get the job done. It is outlined...as some have reviewed otherwise, if you apply the study skills to the book itself the gems will leap out at you.

Book Description
Approximately two-thirds of deaths in the United States involve a doctor's partnership with an individual, whether it be for the administration of pain relief or sedation or for the act of discontinuing or not beginning life-sustaining treatment. In A Midwife through the Dying Process, Timothy Quill, M.D., explores that partnership and the complex end-of-life issues that surround physician-assisted death. Here are the stories of nine individuals and their very different endings, common only in each person's struggle to confront issues of law and ethics and to realize a "good"death.

Outstanding.......2002-05-04
An outstanding collection of vignettes that can be read not only by those in the health care professions, but also by those who just have questions about how physicians and clients can communicate around sensitive issues. I have used it as a text for nursing students with great success and shared it with friends diagnosed with a serious illness. I strongly recommend it for anyone who is concerned about quality of life at the end of life
Excellent series of vignettes about compassion for the dying.......1998-07-22
Dr. Quill is best known for his infamous "Diane" who chose to end her life in a unorthodox way. Dr. Quill does not agree with physician assisted suicide, however, he does believe that compassion in dying and allowing one to make their own destiny in the face of uncontrollable pain will alleviate much suffering. The most common reason for suicide in those with medical conditions that are incurable are is they want to die in control and without pain. It is possible with the right medical care and if it results in hastening ones death...so be it. Dr. Kevorkian uses an unorthodox procedure that at times is barbaric. Dr. Quill is one who will help you and make you comfortable. He shares his experiences with several of his patients in a way that is humane and loving.
