Book Description

The Go-Getter is Kyne's most famous work, first published by William Randolph Hearst in 1921. The story centers around disabled World War I veteran Bill Peck, a worker who must overcome many obstacles in order to build a successful life for himself. At every turn he is thwarted by life's circumstances and must rely on his own tenacity and wits to see him through. American novelist PETER B. KYNE (1880-1957) was born in San Francisco, California. From early on it was clear that he had a gift for writing, and his time in the army during the Spanish-American War and World War I gave him plenty to write about. Kyne's novels include The Three Godfathers (1913) and Cappy Ricks (1916).

5 out of 5 stars Blue Vasers Needed.......2007-07-26

This story of getting a blue vase while facing almost insurmountable difficulties is a wonderful, inspiring, and educational tool. It is well written. It can be used in almost any setting to encourage the reader to accomplish what seems impossible to accomplish. I first heard the story 35 years ago and have told it at least one hundred times. I finally found the original source and purchased it. After reading it, I have already loaned it to others and encouraged them to buy and mark their own copy. It's a great book for business, for school officials, and just about any setting! Buy it and read it!

4 out of 5 stars It's a Go Get It!.......2007-07-16

Easy to read, easy to comprehend, excellent story approach. Try it, you're sure to be delighted.

4 out of 5 stars Good quick read.......2007-07-02

Short book that has a good moral. The writing style is very dated, and may be a turn off to some (it almost was for me).

You can read the whole book in under an hour, and will definitely find a way to apply it immediately.

4 out of 5 stars Old is Gold.......2006-11-22

Reading a book on leadership written about 80 years ago is an experience. While we all know that new advancements will lead to a need for new skills. This was true for all periods. The best part of The Go-Getter is its relevance for all ages.

When I was reading the book for the first time without even referring to the period when it was written I felt that the author has used the lumber industry to indicate a generic pattern across industries. I felt its clear relevance in the software industry which is still in its adolescence globally.

Go getter attitude will take us to reach any of our goals. This requires three important aspects - the ownership of the activity or problem, courage to handle it even without having the complete knowledge of the activity or the problem but have only broad guidelines and perseverance to withstand the hurdles come on the way in completing the tougher task on hand. The Go-Getter demonstrates the same very well. The blue vase test has opened some powerful insights in me and I should agree my thinking and attitude towards any activity I am looking at had been changed dramatically after reading this book.

This book gives us great insights about making our own fortunes. There is a saying that the normal worker waits for the job description and the Go getter writes one and exceeds the same. This book offers motivation to look at opening doors(opportunities), finding ways to make way, take ownership, show perseverance, think laterally to find maximum alternatives on hand, respecting the designer/assigner of the job and his instincts and finally the strongest of the messages - It will be done attitude.

A must read for the younger generation to learn how to find their way in the new executive jungle. Considering the economic growth majority of the economies are experiencing the managers are always flooded with priorities between managing growth vs creating supporting structures for planning further growth. The amount of time new age managers/leaders are spending on grooming and counseling the subjects has drastically come down and it is important that the subjects learn some life skills to sail through the tough waters. The Go Getter definitely offers the required life skill - being a Go Getter.

Excellent. One of the best management books I have ever read. My clients love it. In fact, I will be ordering 25 more today.

Book Description

Graduating from high school is a big step for any girl. She is leaving her childhood behind and beginning the rest of her life. She is also leaving her mother's protective circle of love and guidance. One of the greatest gifts a mother can give her daughter at this pivotal moment in her life is good counsel. In And One More Thing Before You Go...Maria Shriver, bestselling author, acclaimed journalist, First Lady of California, and mother of two daughters, provides a loving and heartfelt guide for girls as they go off to college.

Expanded from a speech given to her young friend Ally's graduating class, Maria writes as a wiser, more experienced girlfriend, but also as both the daughter of a mother whose advice she still seeks and as the mother of daughters for whom she wishes a fulfilling and happy life. In this stirring and inspiring guide, Maria talks to young women about how to find abundance and emotional richness, and how not to overlook life's most special gifts. Her ten rules -- told in a witty and poignant anecdotal style -- offer a firm grasp on what's really important in life.

And One More Thing Before You Go...is a book that transcends age groups, a book that will make you laugh, cry, and open your eyes to a new way of looking at life. Thoughtful, compassionate, and above all, filled with love, And One More Thing Before You Go...is a book that will make every mother cry and every daughter stop and think about her mother's words.

I gave this book to my granddaughter. She will be a senior next year and has plans to go away to college. I hope she takes it with her since we won't be there. Trust, Trust, Trust and a real good book.

5 out of 5 stars Best gift for dropping daughter off at college.......2006-04-03

I gave this book to my daughter as we said our goodbyes and left to come home. I spent the week leading up to that adding my own thought to the stories and the lessons that Maria gave. It was a wonderful way for me to send our daughter off to college with just one more thing. I have bought another book to do the same thing for daughter #2 as she heads off this August as well. I even bought 2 extras to give to my girl friends who daughters are also graduating in June.

Common sense advice most of us would tell our kids if we could only find the right words!!

5 out of 5 stars Letter from My Daughter.......2005-08-12

My daughter had been going through quite a difficult time in her college adjustment period, as well as with a boyfriend that I used to pray she would break it off with, as she was crying much more than experiencing what she really deserved.

I mailed my daughter two books: "And One More Thing Before You Go" by Maria Shriver and "Stop Being the String Along" by Barbara Rose.

As a Mom, I just wanted to share a brief paragraph from a letter my daughter sent to me. If you are a parent, I think you would appreciate this:

"Dear Mum, I know you were trying to teach me things that deep in my heart I knew you were right, but I was too afraid of looking foolish to let on. I want to thank you for sending me the two books you sent to me, becasuse now I know and see so much more than I did before.

Each book let me know that it is okay to make mistakes, as they make me stronger and wiser. Each book helped me to see and understand more about being true to myself... I wish that every Mum could send both books to their daughters. Thank you for being such a wonderful Mum to me. Now I am going to share both books with my friends."

So this is why I am a "Grateful Mum" and I thank the authors for making a real difference in my daughter's life.

4 out of 5 stars Are You Prepared to Prepare?.......2007-08-23

INTRO
The PLANET LAW SCHOOL II, authored by Atticus Falcon, Esq., is a challenging book for me to review for two reasons: 1) I have not started law school yet and 2) I cannot determine whether or not the suggestions provided in the book will prove valuable.

ABOUT ME (very brief!)
I have purchased and read nearly all of the preparation materials mentioned in the book. I also purchased and read other books for an edge such as "Getting to Maybe" to "The Young Lawyer's Jungle Book: A Survival Guide" to "Law School Confidential" to "Briding the Gap Between College and Law School" to "Acing Your First Year of Law School" to even taking a course in argumentation. I have consumed it all with a serious and focused diligence. I even purchased "The Resume Workbook" that the author mentions in PLANT LAW SCHOOL II (a total waste of money). [The above is *not* a suggested reading list.]

PURPOSE FOR THIS REVIEW
My orientation for law school is tomorrow, and I am a bit restless for some reason and hope that writing this review will help induce drowsiness so I can obtain some sleep! I actually never intended to write a review for this book because it is 1) convoluted, 2) more than a law school preparation book (a full review might require me to address other parts of the book), and 3) I have not started law school and therefore 4) cannot determine how useful this book actually is.

ADVICE FOR THOSE CONSIDERING LAW SCHOOL (this *is* a warning!)
I seriously suggest taking a year (or two) off prior to entering law school. Whether you sit at the beach and do nothing; start a company you always wanted to; or provide humanitarian aide for the needy, you should give yourself some time to 1) prepare for law school and most importantly 2) determine if you *really* want to go to law school. Relax, take a break, work, or do whatever - but I suggest you give yourself some time to 1) prepare and 2) determine if you *really* want to do it.

AUTHOR'S "MUST GET" MATERIALS

CALI
The only "must get" I did not purchase was the "CALI 'Library of Lessons.'" Apparently, my law school provides it for free and after purchasing everything else (see the paragraph on ABOUT ME, supra), I did not want to make this additional purchase. The author "urges" readers to obtain it. I hope it does not significantly hurt me.

ABA BOOKS (UCC)
I purchased (and read) both "The ABCs of the UCC" Article 1 and Article 2. I found them to be the least useful of the "must get" materials, but I am nonetheless happy I purchased them. [I just deleted a lot of text and realized that I was reviewing these books.] To be brief, I do not consider them a "must get."

ASPEN BOOKS
I have read Blum on "Contracts," Glannon on "The Law of Torts," and Glannon on "Civil Procedure." [NOTE: My professor for my K course recommends the use of Blum.] I read them, cover to cover and line by line. I think I might have burnt myself out a little bit. Let me be clear and direct: I do not agree with the author's schedule [I will provide a suggested schedule, infra]. I should have read these *after* (not before) completing LEEWS and Delaney. I am very happy I read them prior to entering law school, and I have heard from other students they are excellent study guides as well. Listen carefully: do not make my mistake. One, follow my schedule, infra. Two, outline. Begin to outline immediately when reading these materials.

LEEWS
I have listened to the LEEWS CDs three times and finished the manual. However, I have not practiced as extensively as I would have liked to. The author loves LEEWS. I consider LEEWS, in conjuction with Delaney's "How to Do Your Best on Law Exams," the most important preparation materials for law school. I was previously reading entire exams and trying to answer entire exams! The human mind cannot possibly make sense of all the facts and circumstances in a hypothetical law school exam. LEEWS trains you how to think of an exam in parts.

DELANEY BOOKS
I read "Learning Legal Reasoning" some time ago. I cannot consider it a "must get" but rather a strongly recommended. [I am flipping through the book right now.] I cannot consider it a "must get" but I theorize that some one without any prior knowledge of briefing would find it useful.

However, "How to Do Your Best on Law School Exams" by Delaney is an indispensable guide on succeeding on law school exams. I am not going to provide an adequate review of it here; I intend to (possibly tonight)review it some time in the future.

MY (SUGGESTED) OUTLINE
After reading nearly all of the "must get" materials (in addition to materials referenced in the book) I would like to provide the reader a suggested outline that I think improves on the author's. The "must get" materials in the book should be limited to and read in this order:

1) Delaney's "How to Do Your Best on Law Exams"

2) LEEWS

3) Aspen E&E books
a) be sure to apply what you learned in 1) and 2) to the examples in the E&E books.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSION
As I said in previous paragraphs, supra, I purchased most of the "must get" materials and other resources including but not limited to "O'Connor's Federal Rules." I do not necessarily believe that reading all of the "must get" materials in the book is critical. However, adequate preparation is. After writing this review, I am considering creating my first "Listmania" on law school preparation materials. Nevertheless, if you are seriously considering law school, the best preparation is giving yourself one or two years to relax, travel, work, and/or pursue your hobbies after finishing your undergraduate (or graduate program) prior to enrolling in law school. I cannot overly emphasis the importance of making a serious determination for yourself whether or not you want to enter law school.

I hope the above was useful for you.

2 out of 5 stars Can do more harm than good.......2007-07-27

Well, I just finished my first year of law school. Fortunately, I passed. But I passed despite the advice of this author who doesn't use his real name and keeps his identity hidden.

I do concede that there is a time and a place for a more skeptical or cynical evaluation of law school. If that type of evaluation should happen on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd say you should do about 4 to 7 of it. This author does about 100 worth of that kind of evaluation, which turns into drivel because it loses its usefulness and turns you anti-lawschool before you even get there. Not good if you've actually decided to go to law school. Don't be fooled by the "I'm giving you the real deal" ploy. He gives you that and his excess baggage of contempt for life itself.

Yes there will be some professors who aren't as interested in your education as they are for their own success. Yes, it sometimes is better if you can create your own curriculum instead of going along with what the professors are teaching. But guess what? That didn't work.

My advice? Skip this book, read Law School Confidential, but take even that book with a grain of salt because whatever he's telling you is common knowledge among most people going to law school now. There's nothing Confidential about Law School Confidential.

Besides that, the biggest advice I can offer is that you should go along with the professors' curriculum as much as possible, but play it by ear. Some professors make it very difficult for you if you don't play by their rules. Some are more lenient. You'll likely get a mix. I tried to do my own thing because it made more sense to do that, but that failed because my professor decided that he didn't like the way I was trying to teach myself law. Believe me, the professors have reputations to keep, and they'll go pretty far to maintain them. I credit the author of this book for breeding that kind of anti-professor paranoia. Listening to anything he had to say was the reason I almost failed law school the first semester.

Third advice? Work hard. This is the only SECRET to law school. The material's easy. The self-discipline's hard.

Again, I'll concede he makes some interesting points. Even a monkey is bound to say something interesting if given 800 pages to play around with. But I'll just end by saying that the "advice" in the book is more of a minefield than nuggets of gold or pearls of wisdom. About his advice not to get the assigned casebook? Try your first year without a casebook. Just try it and see what happens, but only for fun, not if you're serious about law school.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource, an inspiring book.......2007-07-18

I disagree with some of the recent reviews here:

* I don't find this book negative at all! Yes, the book tells you about many of the traps and challenges one faces in law school. BUT, the message is positive - that you CAN do well, by simply being aware and understanding what's going on. You don't need to be some kind of natural-born law genius.

* Furthermore, I found the book to be one of the FEW that tries to provoke the reader a bit with the challenges of legal thinking, and then asking, "Are you having fun yet? If so, then a life as a lawyer may be perfect for you." In my case, I was able to give an unequivocal, "Yes!". It was a very validating experience.

It's an excellent book. I don't give it 5 stars because I found it somewhat disorganized. It's a decent book to read, with lots of good content, although it does meander a bit from topic to topic.

3 out of 5 stars Just get E&E and do tons of hypos.......2007-07-01

I just finished my first year in top 10 percent and after reading this book, I can say that you'll be broke and surrounded by a lot of useless reading material plus scared out of your mind if you read this. The chapter outlining a study plan is useful, but read it quickly at a library. E&E's are definitely helpful (particularly Torts, Contracts and Constitutional Law) and I recommend some hornbooks, in particular Friedenthal's Civil Procedure and Farnsworth's Contracts, which are by far the best. Model Penal Code by Markus Drubber and some of the E&E is all I read for crim and I aced the exam.

Skip the Delaney garbage. They're antiquated and you'll learn how to brief in legal writing. Also, the Restatements are overkill (except in contracts where the comments are very useful). LEEWs is also just wasted added work. IRAC works just fine (though I am a journalist by trade so I probably didn't need the writing help). Crunchtime and most commercial outlines are also a waste. My civ pro professor admonished some students who copied wrong information out of them on the final (I'm sure they were graded down for that).

My advice, enjoy your last free summer before law school and just budget your time well once you're there. Join a productive study group and focus on hypos and old exams well ahead of time (probably the only good piece of advice in this book). Siegel's makes books of hypos or just look up exams on the internet. A lot of schools post them. Seeing what different professors ask on their exams really helps you cover every possible scenario (and look really intelligent asking questions in class). And yes, make sure you know all the black letter law, not just the policy bs your professor stresses in class. Otherwise exams will bite you in the *ss. And one crazy bit of advice Falcon gave that I followed and helped me immensely: don't buy the textbook. I'm not an advocate of just not reading the cases like PLS is, but when I didn't own the book, I had to make sure I went to the library or the bookstore to read the case and take really good notes of everything (not just cases) BEFORE THE PLACE CLOSED. So I stayed on top of my work and the note-taking really helped my mastery of the concepts. Also made outlining a breeze. I aced every class I didn't buy the book for. So if you're crazy like me, give it a try for a week and maybe you'll save some money.

It's really not so bad folks. I worked, went out plenty and still did very well. Just know thyself. If you're a genius, maybe cramming will work for you, but if not, stay on top of your work.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading.......2007-06-26

If you're going to Law School, buy this book now. Ideally you want to buy this book a year before you go to Law School. I bought it 8 months before I went, and was able to finish the book and all the recommended readings, but I wish I had purchased the book earlier.

Once again, if you are going to law school, and you are lucky enough to be prospecting this book to buy among all the other books out there, BUY THIS BOOK FIRST. Law School is hard. This book will give you the needed edge if you're smart, or it will be your lifesaver if you're not that smart. Either way you need it.

Book Description

On the Go language learning programs are now available in a choice of either cassette tapes or compact discs. This updated compact disc program emphasizes Spanish speaking and listening comprehension on a fundamental level, which makes it an ideal self-teaching tool for learning in a car, international travelers, as well as good supplementary material in school language labs. On the Go programs, available in several languages, each offer approximately 180 minutes of audio instruction. They come with a script booklet. No textbook is needed for these informal and practical language learning programs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of dialogues.......2003-04-26

This is a collection of short dialogues reflecting various everyday situations. I found them to be very lively and well put together. Being a collection of dialogues, not a course as such, it can be used as a great supplement to any text-based or even an audio course, to enhance one's vocabulary and especially to train one's ear for comprehending spoken Spanish.

It is a graded collection, and the level rises quite steeply, so one can't expect to absorb them all in one shot, but only as one's knowledge of grammar and vocabulary evolves.

The voices on tapes are native Castialian Spanish, at least in the previous edition I own. I highly recommend these tapes as a very high quality study supplement.

2 out of 5 stars Una cursa muy mal.......2003-03-08

This course is the worst in the world! the speakers on the the tapes don't sound the least bit native and the way the words are spoken is not natural, at all. It does present a good amount of vocabulary. The course seems to assume that the reader has a basic understanding of Spanish,as well, making it not completely for beginers. I highly suggest that anyone planning to purchase a Spanish speaking program spend more money on a better program, of which there are many.

Book Description

Death is one of life's greatest mysteries. Over the years, the bestseller lists have contained many works on death-related phenomena: Betty Eadie's Embraced by the Light; James Van Praagh's Talking to Heaven; and Raymond Moodie's Life After Life, are just a few. One Last Hug Before I Go is the first book to explore in depth the Deathbed Vision (DBV). Complete with the author's own encounters and those of over forty other DBV experiencers, this revolutionary work provides research information from the early twentieth century through the present. Included are: survivors' detailed accounts of their departed loved one's visions and final words; the survivors' mystical experiences and premonitions preceding a loved one's passing; accounts of seeing the soul leave the body; and after-death communications. These final words and visions from the dying provide a poignant, final farewell hug to loved ones, offering peace of mind and hope for an eventual reunion. After finishing this fascinating book, readers will come away with a better understanding and acceptance of the process of death and see it as a spiritual adventure, not a sad and fearful ending to life.

5 out of 5 stars A gift.......2007-06-30

This is an excellent book that will touch your heart and reassure you your loved ones live on.

5 out of 5 stars EXELLENT READING.......2003-01-08

This was an excellent book. Very easy to follow and very interesting. I wish she would write another. A must read regarding Death Bed Visions.

5 out of 5 stars The most credible of all on this topic.....and the afterlife.......2002-02-19

This book provides far more than just research. There are some very intriguing parallels to all the documented cases.

This book is written in a way that it maintains the interest of the existing "Believer" and captures the interest of the curious and perhaps skeptic. Every reader can relate to some witnessed event in this book. Perhaps not aware of what may have taking place at the time....now enlightened.

I found this refreshingly real and hard to put down Especially in comparison to other popular books about the afterlife that had a commercial edge and were almost trying to "sell" a belief.

Dr. Carla has an impressive fan club of people like myself that respect her for her Spiritual insight and general wisdom of well being. I actually reccommend all of her books. She's pretty multi-tasked!

2 out of 5 stars Important topic marred by amateurish writing.......2001-03-27

I have to agree with another reviewer regarding the substance of this book, or lack thereof; this is a fascinating topic and although the author included some interesting case studies her overuse of irrelevant filler and 'homey' writing style was a real turn-off. If you're looking for a credible, objective analysis of the DBV phenomenon and original research, look elsewhere. You're much better off reading "What They Saw at the Hour of Death", which is where this author got most of her information.Disappointing...

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2000-11-30

This is the first book I read on the subject and I really liked it. Dr. Carla lists tens of Death Bed Visions which are indeed convincing and beautiful. They make you realize that death is not that horrible and frightening at all. The dying person sees deceased relatives, angels, and loved ones and actually wants to go to them. They see the wonderful light that awaits for them on the other side and they see that [over there] there is nothing to be afraid of. After you read this book you will understand how unfair it is that society does not accept the DBVs and the death subject in general. How our own religion rejects them, and wonder why, since they preach that death is not the end! Let alone the scientists (and stay away from most of them) who always find a...scientific answer for every question. But as beautifully stated in the book already, if those visions are only by-products of the dying brain, how come the dying person sees only deceased ones, and never loved ones who are still alive?

I only wish I had this book when my beloved grandmother died and was so much frightened of death. I would be able to explain her a few things I learned from this wonderful book, and provide her some comfort.

It is amazing. It proved that we don't die alone at all, but a beloved deceased person or persons are there, waiting to help us make it to the other side and we are happy to reunite with them!

"My wink is binding," Bernie Brillstein writes in the middle part of his memoir of a career in showbiz. At this point the movie-star manager has already admitted that he wanted power and prestige as soon as he started in the William Morris agency mailroom. And that he chased after a Don Corleone-ish kind of respect afterward. But even when he became a clout-carrying manager and near-mogul he kept his people-first credo. You suspect he loves it too for the way it echoes the Borscht Belt, since that's the kind of verbal energy he draws on throughout this anecdote-crammed autobiography. He calls himself "show," but in four decades he had to be "business" too, tough enough to tell clients, as he says he did, when to start their career over from scratch. The book begins with a graphically honest memory of his visit to the proctologist with his family when he was 24--something he guffaws off, but it's probably not far from the sort of reality check he regularly gave clients like Jim Henson, Norm Crosby, Lorne Michaels, John Belushi, and Brad Pitt. He cops to a gambling addiction, a love of "high class call girls," and to the way he stole from Laugh-Into invent Hee Haw. But he also brokered Lorne Michael's big break with SNL, produced Dangerous Liaisons, and eventually got News Radio and The Sopranos on the air. He candidly assesses professional pains too, including Michael Ovitz's pathology, Garry Shandling's riddling neuroses, and the loss of Belushi and Henson. "I care," he writes finally, "because that's who I am." It's easy to smile at that, but by the end of the book it's also easy to believe he means it. --Lyall Bush

3 out of 5 stars REALLY JUST A SALESMAN, AFTER ALL THE FUSS!!.......2001-03-28

Because we're so star-struck in America, we tend to be overly impressed with ShowBiz and the people who inhabit that world. But as charming, determined and persistent a personality Mr. Brillstein may be, he's essentially just a salesman - NOT the creator, but a "dealmaker" of the ShowBiz Old School - and after almost 400 pages, I found he'd worn thin his welcome! However dramatic it may have been FOR HIM to accompany John Belushi's body back East, or "duke it out" with the Big Boys in corporate takeovers while at Lorimar, the emotions are thinly drawn and shallow in this book. Brillstein made me less than intrigued with his machinations, unimpressed by his self-aggrandizing spin on events and ultimately unsympathetic to his life challenges. (His obvious misogyny doesn't help, either - he has no use for women outside of the sack, it appears.) Here's another absurdly fortunate, rich powerful older man feeling sorry for himself because time changes everything? I'd have hoped he'd have learned to adjust better to the slings and arrows of life by the time he got to his 60s and 70s!

This book was distressing to me because I REALLY WANTED to LIKE the guy - but I found I couldn't. He's kinda ordinary, and once you remove the "famous" names and large amounts of money, his anecdotes are kinda ordinary! He's not terribly brilliant, sage or extraordinary in any other way than being sublimely LUCKY! I gave the book 3 stars, because it's certainly not dreck, but for inspiration or insight, I'd advise looking elsewhere!

5 out of 5 stars Brillstein is as a big a star as those he represents.......2001-03-07

I'm not sure what drove me to buy the Brillstein book. I had heard of him of years, but wasn't sure that a managers tale was all that interesting. Oh, but is! This book is filled with humor, honesty, and and ego. Bernie seems like a terrific guy and he tells fantastic stories. Some are filled with love: Belushi, Radner, etc. Others venom (and these are the most fun, he pulls no punches): Ovitz, Shandling (more would have better on this), etc. You learn about the inside story of Hee Haw, The Muppets, SNL, and Lorimar. My favorite stuff was about Jim Henson, rarely have I seen so much great stuff written about one of my heroes.

While this may not be a roast, I raise my glass to Big Bernie and the wonderful life he has led. Thanks for sharing.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Touching.......2000-12-04

I found myself unexpectedly touched by this autobiography. Having read it, I consider Bernie Brillstein a friend. With no self-praise, Brillstein shows himself to be a man of decency, of compassion, of empathy. He began in his profession as an agent at William Morris, dreaming of representing mid-Century comics such as Jackie Gleason and Jackie Gale. When he left William Morris, he became a personal manager, starting the careers of dozens of entertainers who have become household names. The stories Bernie has to tell! He survived--there's no other word--until the end of the century, representing Jim Henson, Lorne Michaels, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd and, as the saying goes, a cast of thousands along the way. He created HEE HAW and greenlighted THE SOPRANOS, headed a movie studio for a short time, got fired, picked himself up and started again. His very life has been the personification of the entertainment business; there are few who exceeded his success. And he is the one having the last laugh: He's still here! But along with the chronological report of his professional experience, what he was thinking, how he pulled it off, there is this man, this basically sweet and decent man, and that's what shines through his book. I enjoyed reading about Bernie's fascinating life.

2 out of 5 stars Passably interesting but..........2000-10-29

A passably interesting look into life of an "old school" agent/manager with some real insights into his client's lives and the behind-the-scenes machinations of Hollywood. WARNING: You'll have to wade through a considerable amount of self-aggrandizment that I found tremendously off-putting toward the end. It's a rare occasion when I don't finish a book but I found myself skipping through the last third and ultimately bailed out with just a few chapters to go.

3 out of 5 stars Readable, but not essential reading........2000-09-07

There's really no good insider showbiz tips or amazing gossip here. I found the book to be readable -- meaning I kept on reading once I picked it up but at any time I could have stopped and not felt like I was going to be missing a golden nugget.

It's a show biz biography of a manager. Did we really expect it to be an essential read?

Book Description

*The first pages are the #1 key to acceptance or rejection of manuscripts--most agents and editors claim to make their decision on a manuscript after the very first page, which means that no writer can afford to have a weak story beginning

*The first and only fiction-writing book that focuses exclusively on beginnings--no other book on the market addresses story beginnings in a comprehensive manner

Agents and editors agree: Improper story beginnings are the single biggest barrier to publication. Why? If a novel or short story has a bad beginning, then no one will keep reading. It's just that simple. Hooked provides readers with a detailed understanding of what a beginning must include (setup, backstory, the inciting incident, etc.); instruction on how to successfully develop the story problem; tips on how to correct common beginning mistakes; exclusive insider advice from agents, acquiring book editors, and literary journal editors; and much more.

5 out of 5 stars I'm HOOKED -- and You Will Be Too!.......2007-09-10

HOOKED is superb! Concrete and practical, this book lays out the keys to making that crucial first scene work in a clear and succinct manner. One of the best things about it is it is UP TO DATE with what editors and agents are looking for NOW. This has changed a lot in recent years, so many otherwise-excellent books fall short because they are now dated. HOOKED helped me fix the first scene in my own book which is now under serious consideration by a major publisher. Several folks in my writing group have purchased it and I intend to recommend it to others.

Thanks to Les Edgerton for a terrific addition to my craft library. This book will get plenty of use!

1 out of 5 stars Cynical and Dispiriting.......2007-08-30

I cannot agree with the accolades that Amazon reviewers are heaping upon this book. This is one of the most cynical and dispiriting books on writing I have read.

Les Edgerton continues in the tradition of Dwight V. Swain and Jack Bickham: when writing fiction, the bottom line counts for everything, while artistry and craft count for nothing. The writer's job is to hook the reader fast and never let him go, not because that will make for a good read, but because agents and editors need to be hooked fast or they won't read beyond the first few pages. Forget the leisurely buildup, just get the horses out of the gate fast!

Edgerton admittedly focuses on genre fiction and has little use for what might be called "literary fiction." My own interests, as reader and writer, also lie with genre fiction, but I think Edgerton (and Swain and Bickham) might show a bit less contempt for the road they chose not to follow.

What all three authors provide (despite their protests to the contrary) are formulae. The problem is, many successful genre books don't follow these formulae. Let's take Dan Brown as an example. I certainly do not regard Brown as a good writer (his prose is barely serviceable), but he has achieved the sort of success that Edgerton holds up as a goal.

1. Edgerton: Never ever open with a dream.
Brown's "Angels and Demons" does exactly that.

2. Edgerton: Never ever open with an alarm clock ringing.
"Angels and Demons" opens with a ringing phone that serves the same purpose.

3. Edgerton: In general, avoid writing a Prologue.
Both "Da Vinci Code" and "Angels and Demons" open with brief prologues.

4. Edgerton (quoting a literary agent): Never open with a villain.
Each of the above prologues depicts the villain doing his dastardly deed.

Now, Edgerton realizes that many bestsellers violate his rules. So how does he answer this? By saying that those novels are flawed, and that they succeed in spite of their flaws! (Perhaps because of the authors' popularity).

There are many other problems with this book. It deals indiscriminately with writing novels, short-stories, and movie screenplays. These are 3 different genres, and what works for one will not work for the other. Yet Edgerton lumps them all together.

Finally, Edgerton provides a plethora of what he considers to be great opening lines (among them his own wretched line cited by another reviewer). None of these lines made me want to read further. In fact, half of them didn't even seem well-written.

A book that covers the same ground as "Hooked" but does it much better is "The First Five Pages" by Noah Lukeman. I would also recommend "Self-Editing for Fiction Writers" by Browne and King. True, their prose is a bit more formal than the down-home, aw-shucks style practiced by Edgerton. But they leave his book in the shade.

5 out of 5 stars Want to improve your craft?.......2007-08-26

As the title implies, this book is about "hooking" your readers from the opening page and never letting them go. Les Edgerton's laid back teaching style and world-wise approach to writing has made HOOKED one of my favorite writing tools.

This book easily appeals to whatever stage of the writing game you happen to be in. From ways to avoid overusing backstory to creating a story problem that sustains an entire manuscript, HOOKED has it covered with tips and examples that you can begin using in your own manuscripts right now. If you're truly interested in improving your craft and hooking agents, editors and most importantly, READERS:) get HOOKED.

2 out of 5 stars Not So Great.......2007-08-14

This book, like others have written, features great instruction on the art of writing modern fiction, particularly that imperative hook.

For me, however, the author's often insightful suggestions are completely obscured by his own partiality. He cites 4 to 5 of his own openers (because they're just that great), and truthfully, they don't warrant the inflated, self-confessed praise that Edgerton gives to himself. Other examples are largely extracted from short stories, not novels. These two genres are separated in necessity and style by miles; therefore, Edgerton's haphazard melding of the two detracts from his overall goal.

If you're willing to overlook the author's self-indulgence and swallow the superficial, hollow and often displeasing examples of other "amazing hooks" provided in this manual (as I reluctantly did), then by all means, go for it. But I found that, by the last page, my suspension of disbelief had long disintegrated. There are too many examples of poor, elementary and sometimes laughable writing in this book to believe that all of the publishing industry looks solely for 7th grade style, bony, misdirected language and various forms of mind-numbing instant gratification when it comes to the search for worthy literature.

Please note that my above comments do not negate that this book has some formidable insights and admirable suggestions regarding structure and the ten components of an opening. But I think that many excellent writers out there deserve better advice from a better source. So, whether you decide on this nifty blue book or not, remember this sentence:

"He was so mean that wherever he was standing became the bad part of town."

"He was so mean that wherever he was standing became the bad part of town."

"He was so mean that wherever he was standing became the bad part of town."

And... well, you get the idea.

By the last page, you will know this sentence as you do your own name. It's Les Edgerton's own "whopper" of a hook, and he claims that most people couldn't resist reading on from a genius opener like that, although he willingly admits that "it's my own story and one should at least appear to be somewhat humble". Personally, after the fifth citing of this same (and very bad, film-noir-esque) sentence, it made me put the book down. It took a while to pick it up again, and longer still to trudge through the spontaneous flashes of very blatant boasting. I couldn't get past it, but maybe you can.

Make your own judgments. These are only mine.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas and an easy read.......2007-07-16

Here is a book that focuses 90% of it's attention on the most important 5% of your novel. With an easy to read format, helpful ideas, and clear instruction, it is a great addition for any fledgling writer.

The key to getting published in today's market is getting read. The key to getting read is having a killer opening. This book is a no-brainer to improve the opening of ANY novel.

5 out of 5 stars A Daily Companion on Your Journey Out of Debt.......2004-04-13

The road out of the land of debt can be a lonely one. You feel shame and guilt over your debts, not to mention fear and anxiety.
And you feel alone with your "secret." How can you hope to find your way out of this desolate place?

This pocket-sized daily guide can help. Karen Casanova's book contains dated, daily meditations which also offer practical suggestions for reducing your debt and your stress.

This one is not a complicated "money-management" book. Rather, it is a combination of spiritual/self-help manual that you can carry with you for daily shots of inspiration.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by debt, it seems to me that this book will be helpful to you.

5 out of 5 stars A daily requirement........2000-05-19

This book has become part of my morning ritual. I read the meditation for the day each morning. It helps me to quit debting one day at a time. I've made some real strides in my debting behavior and this book helps keep me on track. A must read for anyone struggling with debt. It'll make you feel better and give you the strength and hope to make it one more day without debting.

5 out of 5 stars Letting Go of Debt.......2000-05-17

Daily meditations for those who swim through a stormy sea of debt encircled by sharks. The stress of debt is as fierce as any other addiction, affecting us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and even causing other addictive behaviors, all of which affects our relationships. In fact, we get so stressed about our debt that, for relief, we spend more. Debt is acquired a day at a time. Likewise, debt reduction and financial solvency are accomplished and maintained a day at a time. These meditations are a welcome adjunct to financial recovery programs or books.

5 out of 5 stars didn't get in debt in a day and won't get out in a day ..........2000-04-27

Being in debt is a lonely place to be, and I finally found a simple step forward to a permanent solution, this book. There is a short one small page topic for each day. This keeps me in the solution of becoming financially solvent, each day. The topics are simple and reaffirming, along with suggestions that most people perhaps do without thinking, but for those that have gotten into debt, the topics are the ladder out of our problem. Previously I bought "How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt & Live Prosperously" by Jerrold Mundis but this did not change my spending behavior even though I read it cover to cover.

STORIES TO GO!

When a thirsty fox steals some milk from an old farm woman, it sets off a chain reaction young readers will delight in following. Based on a favorite Armenian folktale, this briskly told cumulative story was awarded the Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished picture book of 1971.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Childhood Story .......2005-11-06

It is with great pleaser that I review my all time favorite Armenian story which my grandfather used to tell me. Nonny Hogrogian did a great job of translating this story. The text is almost exactly translated. The illustrations are a perfect resemblance of Armenian characters. The vast fields remind me of the rigorous landscapes of Armenia. Nonny Hogrogian did an excellent job depicting the culture.
The story is cumulative, similar to There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly and Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears. It teaches a great lesson and is bound to be an all time favorite of many children.

4 out of 5 stars Hunter's review.......2005-05-18

One fine day a fox ran through the woods on the other side he was thirsty. The fox saw a bucket of milk. There was some milk left but not much. An old lady getting wood saw him, and she cut off his tail. The lady yelled at the fox. The fox said, "Please give back my tail." The lady said, "Give me my milk!" The fox began to sob. He went to a cow. I'll give you milk for some grass. The fox went to the field. The field said give me water. He went to the stream for water and the stream said get me a jug. He found a girl. The girl said get me a bed and you can have my jug. He found a bed seller; he wanted an egg. He found a hen; the hen wanted some grain. He found and a sales man. He and gave the fox some grain and he got the milk. Was the lady still there? I recommend this book to all

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully-illustrated cumulative folk tale.......2004-09-15

An old woman chops off a fox's tale after he greedily laps up her milk. In this cumulative folk tale, the sheepish, tail-less fox must barter with man and beast to obtain milk to repay the old woman to get his tail back. The illustrations beautifully capture the penitent and forlorn character of the fox throughout his journey. The gentle hills of the eastern European countryside spread across the pages, evoking quiet rural life. This book won the Caldecott in 1972.

As a folk tale that never reveals its setting, this book really doesn't address its apparent Armenian cultural origins. The only clue as to its cultural origin is the costume of the characters: the old woman's babushka, the peddler's fez, and the miller's apron. For children, and perhaps others, this may simply read as "old-fashioned." Comparing and contrasting this with other folk tales - particularly other cumulative folk tales - from other cultures might bring these subtle cultural aspects into sharper focus for children.

5 out of 5 stars Response to E. Bird review of 5/26/04 One Fine Day.......2004-08-20

The abovementioned reviewer of One Fine Day has missed several fine points Nonny Hogrogrian's book possess. The books repetition of themes and jaunts of the fox are the charming and educational elements that captivate an early reader or storyteller.

The illustrations are not a modern version of Patricia Polacco. If the reviewer were familiar with the ethnic similarities of Hogrogrian's characters to Polacco's, wide and unique differences exist. Hogrogrian's characters are classic to her numerous illustrations in other books. She uses her Armenian background to give character and emotion to her drawings.

The story is a familiar one and a fable used by other writers. Hogrogrian's touch through her unique illustrations make it a winner.

The above mentioned reviewer concludes his review by stating, for a Caldecott winner, Hogrogrian's book is "small and unassuming". I would have to disagree and encourage the reviewer to not bypass the less flashy and "fab" words that exist in so many books today.

How fortunate for children everywhere, that the Caldecott Award panel chose to not overlook the quiet beauty and unique character illustrations in selecting this classic book a winner.

2 out of 5 stars Daily jolted by the angle of this book.......2007-03-30

I am using this book as my devotional in 2007, and almost daily I am surprised by the angle that the text takes. I start out reading it thinking that the scenario the author is describing is some problem of hers, but it always turns out it's someone else's problem, and the author is the "savior" of the problem, or the one making the right decision (and we should likewise make such a righteous decision). I don't disagree; the decisions the author makes are correct, but it is a bit tiring to continually read about how excellent the decisions of this famed and powerful Christian leader (?) are. I have read various books from influential Christian authors, and there is usually a bit more humility involved. For example, last year I read a collection of C.S. Lewis' works that had been made into a devotional. I never sensed that C.S. Lewis was bragging about the great things he had done. Same with, say, Dr. James Dobson, a respected author with sound Christian principles. That is not the case with this book, however. I have to laugh to myself when I come across yet another day's text where the author shares what a great thing she did. It's still a book I need to and plan to continue to learn from, but I really don't recommend it due to the irritating "holier than thou" subjects.
