Quantum Notes- Is it worth it?.......2006-03-20
I found this book to have a lot of good information for someone who has never experienced Quantum. If you know anything about Quantum Learning, though, it's just a review of VERY BASIC Quantum Notetaking Techniques. Good to have around to brush up on, I guess, for those who teach Quantum.
Quantum Notes.......2004-06-17
Don't waste your time and money. Not worth half of the asking price. It's as though, the author's are so delighted in the success of their first works, they think they can compile and package any kind of garbage, call it a book and rely on their former success and names to sell it. I Could have given the money instead to my 8 yr. old granddaughter and asked her to explain and show me what she is learning in her accelerrated-learning classes in grade school and would have gotten much more info than what is in the pages of this pamphlet. Totally disappointed! A much better 'BOOK', is 'Learning Maps and Memory Skills' by Ingemar Svantesson. Another great one is 'Mindmapping' by Joyce Wycoff. Again,'DON'T BOTHER'!
Book Description
You’ve been called adrenaline junkie, thrill seeker, permanently out of the box, difficult, and just plain crazy.
And mostly, it’s true. Whether you show your radical streak in extreme sports, supercharged business ventures, or high risk relationships, you have a full-blown danger habit. As far as you can tell, you were born with it. And honestly, you wouldn’t have it any other way…
Except when your danger habit betrays you. Then your craving for adventure turns into a magnet for disaster. You leave a trail of broken commitments and unwise decisions. You get trapped in stupid addictions. You hurt the ones you love. And you end up feeling like a big mistake.
But what if you were created extreme for a purpose?
What if the radical faith God has in mind for you doesn’t have to come with a dark side? What if it actually turned out to be your ultimate rush?
In his fast-paced book, The Danger Habit, surfer and lifelong adventurer Mike Barrett explores the mindset of born radicals and the promise of what he calls “adventure faith.” He combines personal story telling, raw honesty, and biblical wisdom in a reading experience that will capture your imagination and motivate you to reach for your huge life mission in Christ.
Story Behind the Book
“I caused significant pain to my own wife and kids while struggling with an addiction to risk, the pursuit of extreme sports, and an overwhelming feeling of being bored with many Christians and standard church life. My epiphany came a number of years ago when God broke through it all and showed me how ‘propped up’ my life was without His real presence and power. In the end, we sold our suburban home, moved to the Oregon Coast , and started a ministry to surfers. Countless lives were changed; my wife and I even became pastors. Once dead to the life I had pursued, God gave me back an adventure I could never have previously dared hope for.” –Mike Barrett

Read The Danger Habit If You Are Radical.......2007-07-05
If you are a risk taker and adrenaline junkie (the author is a surfer and rock climber) and could use some soul food, this book is for you. Mike Barrett has done a great job of sharing his Christian faith with the reader in a unique and refreshing way. The book's message is based on the idea that many people (like this reader) live their lives in ways that don't realize their incredible potential to serve the Lord. It's essentially a calling to the unconventional Christian. In his book, Barrett calls on us to take our "radical" energy and put it towards spiritual fuilfillment instead of destructive behaviour that often leads risk takers to personal trouble.
Barrett reveals much about his personal life experiences and his own struggles with his radical tendencies. And unlike evangelical preachers of whom he is suspicious, his approach is one of encouragement stressing that God wants for us to do well with our lives and to make them meaningful. Many of his stories are wonderful accounts that are entertaining, humorous, even sad, but mostly inspirational. The bottom line is that this book is powerful due to Barret's down-to-earth approach to Christianity and the ovearll tone of his message.
Excellent Gift Book.......2007-04-16
The sheer transparency of the author created an atmosphere where I could be honest with myself and evaluate the fights I pick.
This is a great book whether you consider yourself to be radical or not. Each of us has a little bit of "RADICALNESS" inside, though it expresses itself differently. A good reminder that this is in us for a purpose.
This book makes an excellent gift. Easy to read, thought provoking and even ADD people will love it!
Good Book.......2007-03-21
I thought it might be cheezy. It wasn't.
I found it insightful, encouraging and humbling. The author did a great job of explaining both the adrenaline junkie personality as well as the pitfalls and potential traps we often find ourselves in.
I especially liked the author's strategy for redirecting one's need to fight, by showing how the most important things worth fighting for are faith, family, and one's "neighbor".
The section on "falling down" was a good addition. This personality type tends to make a lot of mistakes which can often cause self defeatism. We get our image wrapped up in what we think God thinks about our failures. By understanding that God isn't surprised by our outcomes, it helps us get back up again, minus the self loathing.
The chapters on "realistic expectations" and "finishing well" were also well done and ended the book with encouragement.
At times the author seemed to jump around a bit and his intense personality comes through. However, that's what allowed me to read the whole thing in one sitting. His ADD and my ADD fit like a chain and sprocket.
I was pleasantly surprised and recommend the book to anyone who is an adrenaline junkie, lives with one, is on a team with one, or simply wants to understand one.
Christianity is not tame.......2007-03-20
There's nothing safe about Christianity, and the history of the faith is riddled with people who gambled everything on the Gospel. Of the twelve apostles, only one died of natural causes, annd he had a long and terrifying road beforehand. All the others died unpleasant deaths in faraway countries. Church history is full of men and women like Joan of Arc, Francis of Assisi, and Fr. Damien of Molokai. While I'm no huge fan of the Protestant Reformation, the men who sparked it were anything but staid. Martin Luther was a walking ball of fire with a loud mouth and a short fuse, and John Calvin stood stern and immovable like a rock at the top of a waterfall.
Sure, there's a place for the stolid, traditional Christian who plugs away at a life of faith, but in our time, we've made not rocking the boat into a virtue. We tend to look at Christian radicals as Kool-aid guzzlers or snake-oil salesmen. We are distrustful of anybody who wants to color outside the lines, figuring that extremism probably equals faulty theology, and certainly makes one dangerous.
In this book, Mike Barrett dispels the myth that there's no place in the Body of Christ for the extreme. Mike is no stranger to risky behavior, and makes no bones about the damage that adrenaline addiction can do to not only the junkie but his friends and family. With the experience to back it up, Mike shows how that same love of danger can be a powerful instrument in the Lord's toolbox. The Church would be a much lesser body had it not been fueled by the men and women whose call was to go beyond the traditional and the safe. To carry the Gospel into distant places, to speak up against the principalities and powers, or just to reach out to the sort of undesirables that Jesus sought out, requires the same spirit of fearlessness that drives one to climb mountains or ride waves.
For Christians who want to turn their love of danger into service to the Lord, The Danger Habit is like a breath of fresh air. It's a call to turn what could be a liability to an individual into an asset for God. If you're the sort of person who wants to walk with God on the wild side, this book may change your whole perspective on your faith.
BuckNakedFaith guy.......2007-03-02
I spent my college and early marital years rock climbing, extreme skiing and spelunking... I totally resonated with Mike Barrett's experiences and stories. More profoundly-- he gave folks like us permission to be who we are, take it to a Godward level, and be responsible for the risks of such lifestyles. Thanks for being real Mike.

Trading and Emotional IQ.......2005-08-17
This is the first 'trading' book I've read that explicitly offers advice on suicide. Here is the final sentence of the last chapter, the one on depression and suicide: "...seek out a counselor, to find your way to God as you understand Him, or whatever it is that you need to do to end your pain, loneliness, and hopelessness. If you can manage this, and do something very small every day, I know you will get through your period of loss, and I will feel tremendously grateful for having shared some of your experience with you through this book."
This is not a book on 'how to trade'. Loosely, the book is a psychologist's autobiographical 5 years in the trading pit (ok, in front of a trading screen). The first section covers Dr. Elvin's frustrations with finding a teacher and the second lightly touches on trading techniques. This is all rather flimsy material, but represents a fair picture of the pitfalls facing anyone trying to 'learn' trading by sitting in classes.
The 3rd section on 'perceptual bias' is very good, and obviously takes advantage of Dr. Ervin's 'real job', clinical psychology. There is brief but concise descriptions of the 'primacy error' (we are unduly influenced by experiences immediately prior to a decision), the 'availability error' (we tend to take the easy way out) and the 'Halo effect' (a good trait blinds us to the bad). Other topics include the 'misplaced consistency theory, the 'sunk cost error', 'prospect theory', 'self-deception bias', 'representativeness bias', and 'sampling bias' (law of small numbers). As an answer to this, Dr. Elvin briefly argues against the Neo-Platonic efforts to exclude emotion from decision making, and recommends assessing one's Emotional IQ with a view to improve it. A few well placed emotional disasters pulled from the author's trading experiences illustrate the points nicely.
Concluding that emotional issues are the primary blame for trading disasters, the 4th section covers the delights of Zen meditation and taking on the self-image of a warrior-trader. The book suggests this is the path the author finally chose. We don't end here, though. Instead, Dr. Elvin launches into a fascinating discussion suicide, the suicides of famous traders and gambling addiction, again with personal insights to his own dark moments.
All of these materials are covered in more detail elsewhere, but Dr. Elvin's consistent reference to his own trading experiences provide a relevance missing in more academic work. The summary chapter suggests the author was trying to write a model of trading competence. Using this goal as a measure, the author has failed to deliver. The offered measures of competence seem designed for accountants. The messy comments on assessing one's emotional IQ are hard to package in terms of competence. The juxtaposition of brave 'warrior trader' and 'suicidal trader' illusions speak to the difficulty of the subject. I suspect the author recommends we meditate on these issues.
Get the book, read and apply it - worth the effort.......2005-02-17
I don't normally write reviews, but I think that this is a great book. Serious traders should consider adding this to their library of reference material.
I have a trading library that contains most of the classic trading books, including more than a dozen on trading psychology. The key is to find the "gems" in each one and figure out how to apply them in our own personal style of trading.
This book is unique in three ways:
1. It pulls together some of the "gems" from the classics so the information is more accessible in one place.
2. The author lays down an excellent framework (structure) for being a successful trader - not just today, but a broad set of integrated skills the must be mastered & balanced. This is actually a interrelated set of "competencies" that the author outlines.
3. A "Model of Trading" is identified at a high level, and presented in a strategic and tactical flow chart. Some text supports the flow charts.
There is no "one book" that covers it all, but applying the information in this book would help the individual trader develop his trading career and bring it to a more professional level.
Another view.......2004-11-17
Well, I don't know if "fascinating" is the word I'd choose for this book, though I'm not entirely sure that the word "book" is appropriate to describe it either.
I'm sure Elvin is a very nice person and I applaud him for the journey he undertook to achieve trading competence, assuming that he ever did (achieve trading competence). However, this is not so much a book as a very long -- and I mean VERY long -- research paper. In effect, Elvin provides the glue to hold together not only the views of others but also sometimes lengthy passages from their books. Rather than contribute anything new to the literature, he provides what is called a "review of the literature", and that review is somewhat shallow. For example, the facility with which he assumes the value of certain elements, such as Fibonacci, even though there is no evidence that they have any demonstrable value at all, toots "new trader", giving the book a sort of What I Learned During My Summer Vacation After Being Screwed By A Guru quality.
In a way, it reminds me of those compilations one sees advertised on late-night television: a few minutes of one movement from some symphony, a sampling of an aria from some opera. If this style encourages one to investigate the source material, all to the good. But at $45 ($70 MSRP), it's a bit steep for a sampler.
I suggest, therefore, that dear reader get this book from the library first in order to find out if it's truly what he wants. It may instead provide leads to those books which might actually benefit the reader in the way he had in mind when he sought out the book in the first place.
Commodity, stock and options traders need this book.......2004-09-03
Financial Risk Taking by M. Elvin contains a fascinating blend of practical trading ideas from the trading masters and psychological studies from the academic world. It covers more than the title implies and discusses trading methods, trading as a business, trading standards and trading psychology. Dr. Elvin is himself a trader, clinical psychologist and business person whose illustrations on trading covers his own errors as well as his developing wisdom as a trader. Recommended for traders at any level, from novice to advanced. If you need a first book on trading or a last book on trading, this is it.

From the Library Journal.......2004-03-30
Library Journal
The aging population is no longer about demographics, states Rust, a pension actuary who consults with employers on the design and administration of retirement plans. It is about aging parents who need the help of their adult children. Not quite as sharp as they once were or perhaps physically unable to care for themselves, these parents require more services and may not know how to go about securing them. Though Social Security was once Americans' major source of retirement income, it now has fundamental problems, and "as more Americans live longer, Social Security is heading for an actuarial disaster," asserts Rust. Rust's book is a timely and well-written guide for adult children, their parents, or anyone planning for old age. Each chapter starts with a real-life case study followed by a detailed discussion organized into two parts: effective ways to get the most for your parents and the physical, emotional, and family issues that affect them directly. The full range of relevant topics include insurance, retirement accounts, government programs, the transfer of authority (complete with sample power of attorney and living-will forms), and more. This clear, comprehensive, and well-organized book is recommended for public libraries.
Do you have elderly parents? You NEED this book!.......2003-12-03
I quickly found information without having to wade through pretentious mumbo-jumbo. The author is straightforward, clear, and concise. There's no "see how smart I am" from this guy. Instead, it's written in a conversational, intelligent and kind tone. I *really* appreciated that because I was dealing with medical staff at the time who were addressing me in patronizingly cold tones. Great book! I was glad I found it!

Fundamentally important reading.......2003-11-12
Taking Care Of Mom & Dad: The Money, Politics And Emotions That Come With Supporting Your Parents is a straightforward guide by actuary and retirement issues expert Mike Rust on dealing with the diverse and inherent financial and emotional issues of supporting elderly parents by adult children. In an era when Social Security and Medicare can no longer be relied upon, Taking Care Of Mom & Dad covers the critically import issues of getting the best health insurance; organizing pension benefits; investing parental money safely and efficiently; using living wills, powers of attorney, and trusts; long-term care options; coping with family turmoil, and more. Taking Care Of Mom & Dad is fundamentally important reading for anyone charged with the responsibility of assisting their parents or other aging adult family members with respect to their financial, insurance, medical, legal, and long-term needs.
Must Have Book for Anybody and Everybody!.......2003-07-17
I received this book from a friend. It's called "Taking Care of Mom and Dad", but the information it contains applies to anybody who expects to retire and grow old someday.
There are chapters on Health Care, Pensions, Social Security, Long Term Care, Nursing Homes, 401(k)s, Life insurance, Annuities, Lifestyle Adjustments, Real Estate, Reverse Mortgages, Estate Planning, Transferring Authority, and Probate. It discusses how to find money you didn't know you had, and how to use assets to your advantage. There is also a chapter on scams and how there are people out there who prey on the elderly.
This is they type of book everybody should read, if only for planning your own retirement.

There's just SOMETHING about this gem of a book!.......2004-06-17
It's funny, but I actually received this book by accident when it came out around 1990. I had received this book in the mail by mistake, as it was intended for someone else. Talk about fate though. I was told I needn't return it, which was great, because I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure how to best do this great book justice, although one might say it is about finding your passion and place in life. It's autobiographical in this respect, and quite philosophical in many ways. If you're looking for some inspiration, and perhaps are wrestling with purpose in life, this book may be what you are looking for. The author has a wonderful style which makes it a joy to read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would heartily recommend it.

This book inspired my own.......2003-12-23
Cathy Feste is an inspiring person and excellent writer. She has lived with diabetes for almost 50 years and continues to help thousands cope with diabetes and other illnesses.
The Physician Within takes you through the psychological, spiritual and practical challenges of living with a chronic illness. She is especially strong on building up a self-care program in small steps, and strengthening your relationships and communication skills to form a powerful team for getting well.
Her book was an inspiration for me in dealing with my own illness. I incorporated much of her wisdom in writing my book, The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Condition.
