5 out of 5 stars patent it yourself ..if you have the money.......2007-10-22

This book was very helpful and i learned alot...This book has all the answers....i just wish i actually had the money to patent it myself...I have a great idea but unfortunately i will have to sit on it for a while

5 out of 5 stars An excellent publication.......2007-10-05

I am living proof that one can get his/her US patent application allowed by using the step by step instructions of this book. I never talked to a patent attorney except the examiner and do not have a legal background (especially the US legal system since I am not even an American), but still managed to get my patent.

Of course, you must always do your best to keep yourself abreast of any new rules which do happen often enough. But the USPTO's web site provides everything you need to know. You just have to make the effort. By all means, I am not saying that it is easy, especially when you come to the issue of unobviosness. What I'm saying is that if you study the book well and put your mind to it and have a good idea, you can get it patented without the help of a patent attorney.

The book is that good.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the mad scientist.......2007-10-04

I have too many ideas and not enough time or money. Having the this book explains much of the patent process in precise and clear fashion that it saves me from going more mad. Every patent lawyer will tell you have an idea that can be patented, for a price of course. For very little cost one can learn, do your research and figure out whether or not you have a good idea. The book also explains how you do not always have to have a patent in order to make your money. I have an edition from 10 years ago, just bought the updated one and there is even more info, a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Even THINK of not buying this book!.......2007-09-20

If you have any interest in pursuing a patent, whether you do it yourself or have an attorney do it, you MUST read this book. I have a stack of "inventor" books and patent books, and this one really stands head and shoulders above the rest. It is so comprehesive, and so clearly and well written, it might be all you need. Read it, underline it, and read it again. Even if you decide not to write your own patent, this book will help you understand the entire process, and make you better able to communicate with a patent attorney. The more you know and can communicate to your attorney, the stronger the patent you'll be able to secure. Equally as important is the possibility that you'll realize that you shouldn't proceed with getting a patent. That knowledge alone could save you many thousands of dollars. Get this book!

5 out of 5 stars (none).......2007-06-14

Takes me through the process step bz step, better than a text book, and I don't have to read from cover to cover to get the information that I need.

5 out of 5 stars Do It Right - Do It Yourself - And Save Money!.......2002-08-18

On the last couple of patent applications I submitted, I ended up doing 90% of the drawings myself because it turned out to be easier than continuously having to correct the mistakes of the draftsman. My attorney said that my drawings just needed to be shaded and cleaned up a bit, and have the legends applied, but otherwise what ended up going into the applications was essentially my drawings with a few more bells and whistles. His draftsman had just put them on a light table and copied them as is. But I still had to pay for the drawings!

This book was able to get me the rest of the way there by detailing the regulations that the USPTO puts on drawings. They're not really difficult, but they ARE specific. Don't be intimidated by them. The very simple drawing style specified by the USPTO is to allow clear reproduction and printing. My attorney charges $295 per figure, and one page can have 2 or 3 figures on it! The last application we submitted had about a dozen figures total. Some of the expense is the work of integrating and describing the drawings, but it is guaranteed to save you money if you do your own drawings. Besides, this ensures that you will be satisfied with the quality and accuracy. Don't forget you can also have the draftsman do the difficult 3-D "Figure 1" bit, and you do the simpler stuff. Like me, I'll bet you'll find it easier than you thought!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Step by Step for the Do-it-yourself Inventor.......2001-02-03

I have all of David Pressman's books on patenting, you know why? Because I filed my own patent using these books. That's how good they are. They really do have step by step instructions. He also has software that helps you prepare the docs. I sort of used that as well. Again, reasonable priced, and useful. I strongly recommend these books for anyone that wants to File a Patent. They will allow you to do it yourself without an attorney.

3 out of 5 stars Good contact resources - becoming dated.......2001-11-15

This book is titled as a "Companion" and it lives up to that name. It is a collection of wide ranging topics related to inventing and marketing an invention. He covers a lot about the patent and copyright processes and then covers how to market your invention with a short chapter on how to get a prototype made.
A large part of the books 400+ pages are forms examples and lists of helpful organizations listed by state. The resource lists are for everything from Inventors Organizations to patent search Internet sites and University Innovation Centers. Going through the list can help with ideas on how to get help solving a problem.
This book is copyrighted in 1995 so at least some of the patent search and application data is out of date. There has been one major change in the patent laws since then, several changes in the fee schedule presented, and large changes in the Internet patent search addresses. I have not read Levy's new "Compete Idiot's Guide...." but I suspect that it is an update of this book.

I liked this book. Has good intructions and resources generally, plus the usual fluff of forms and inventors councils. His product report is worth reading as his other books. Perhaps best from the library, but a good book to buy for reference. For a good way on what to invent, I would choose Mosley's "Marketing your invention" and for processes to avoid failure bringing ot market Robert G. Cooper's "Winning at new products" Levy has had one big winner, the game Adverteasing, but is a good author overall. His advice should be taken into account with other invention books for an overall picture.

This is one of the best books on the entire patent process in the U.S. Levy, an experienced inventor himself, gives great tips on what to avoid, common pitfalls, and GREAT advice for the novice as well as experienced entrepreneurs/inventors. I'm a professional who has done patent searching for years. All the questions I get from people are all answered thoroughly by Levy's work. Great job!

4 out of 5 stars Informative but overly verbose and lacking..........2003-06-10

insofar as providing a basic and customizable yet still fairly comprehensive copyright/terms of use notice that could be included with a software package. As a non-lawyer, I feel that just placing a (c) with a company name and 'All Rights Reserved' notice must somehow be insufficient. Otherwise the length of the terms of use verbiage present in so many public and commercial software products would not be so descript and specific. If Nolo had provided such a notice for use by the book's readers I would probably rate the book as 5 stars rather than 4.

I found it particularly disconcerting to find that once your software is published (made available for sale or download) that it is automatically protected by copyright even without obtaining an official copyright from the government. I personally feel like that key point should have been made clear and prior to any other issues being stated in the text. I specifically had avoided making my software available for distribution becuase I, obviously stupidly, assumed that you needed to obtain an official copyright prior to making software available for public use.

I also found it once again disconcerting to learn that it may take upwards of a year until official notice of a copyright is obtained from the US Copyright office. Another point that in my mind is essential and should have been made clear and early in the text. Unfortunately it wasn't.

Minus those points the content is (generally) clear and concise where legal precedent allows. Not that there are instances where that is not true. However I feel like much of the verbiage could have been eliminated while still maintaining the clarity.

I would recommend that any readers begin with 'Chapter 15 : Other legal protections for software' as the distinctions between trade secret law, patents, trademark, and copyright are illuminated. This was certainly one of if not the most enlightening chapter of the book for me and I would have logically liked to have had those distinctions made early so as to lay the foundation for all future topics.

Well worth the investment but tbere is certainly room for improvement and additional resources.

5 out of 5 stars First step in due diligence and protecting your work.......2002-05-12

This book focuses solely on what you need to know about software copyrights and how to go about obtaining one. In addition to covering the basics of copyrights, you're shown how to sell copyrights, what to do in the event of infringement, and the limits of protection that a copyright affords you. Note that patents offer much stronger protection. It comes with the following forms:

            * Copyright Application for Software (Forms PA, VA and CA, Request for Special Handling, continuation forms, search request forms and cover sheets that are explained in the book and are required to file for a copyright.

            * Eight sample forms in electronic format that are covered in the book.

The book is up-to-date (published in late 2001), easy to read, especially considering the thorny legal issues involved, and is complete enough to assure some degree of due diligence when researching copyright issues and making business decisions based on that research.

4 out of 5 stars excellent starting point for multimedia copyrights.......2000-01-25

For multimedia developers, this book is a great stepping stone. It explains the entire copyright process, including what forms to fill when and why. It also goes in depth about copyright infringment and attaining rights. As a bonus, it includes samples of library of congress forms, and also contains the actual forms needed to apply for a copyright. This book is inexpensive, and i'd recommend to anyone.
