The way the description read for this book was very misleading. I thought I was buying the actual textbook. I was very dissappointed when it arrived less than a week prior to my class starting and it was a review book. Live and learn - if the price looks too good to be true, it probably is!!

This is a great book. It gives a perfect amount of information, not too much, but not too little. I love the pictures and the diagrams. I have the newest edition, 3rd. It's only about 5 pages more than the 2nd edition, so if you need to save money, you won't be missing out on much if you get the 2nd edition.

This wonderful book gives the reader a comprehensive presentation of the biology of the workings of the human body. The book comes with a CD ROM inside the cover and a free registration number for the tutor center which offers the learner internet and telephone support.

4 out of 5 stars A bit jumpy.......2007-06-28

I am currently using this textbook for my History from 1460-1877 online and find that this book is very detailed. There are a lot of details in this book that I have not had in any other history book. The American Promise focuses on some certain historical times, places and people that have been a bit looked over in other books. The only problem I have come across with this textbook is that you have to go back and forth quite a bit to cross-reference. It seems some information may be lacking and the book itself is trying to get too many details instead of focusing on the larger picture of some things or just skipping over some major historical times.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive History 1 Textbook.......2005-09-13

I really like this textbook because it presents the material in a way that I can easily grasp and remember. Past history books have bored me, but this one isn't too bad :) It's also great that it's in paperback because that makes it cheaper!

4 out of 5 stars Needed for a class, found it put together very well.......2007-05-02

As far as textbooks go, it was the formatting that make it what it is. Lots of pictures & primary sources compliment the information being covered in the text. Makes it not as boring a read as most history books. You actually find yourself reading all the little extras.

What makes this series truly great? The fact that they give you a choice on book format to purchase. In a college this textbook would be for a US history 1 & 2. You can chose to purchase the expensive and heavy Hardback if you know you are going to take both parts. Or you can buy a softback of Vol 1 or Vol 2, depending on which class you are enrolled in.

As an adult student, who only recently returned after over 10 year gap I had no reason to want to buy the big textbook. Already had US History 1 credits from the last time around. Through Amazon.com I was able to find the correct edition of the book, while the college bookstore refused to carry it!

Thankful that Amazon.com exists. :)

4 out of 5 stars The Search inside this book is superb handy.......2007-06-06

I borrowed this book's first version and liked it very much. Since I can't find the first version anywhere, I have to buy this new version. I wanted to buy at Amazon in order to save my time driving to bookstore, plus it is cheaper here. I was worried if this book has the sections I need which were in first version. This --Search inside this book-- is superb!! At first, I did not realize it has the whole "contents" list. Then I realized if I click on "next", it will show you the complete "contents". I saw the chapter that I need and ready to buy it. Very happy with this feature--Search inside this book. There is no doubt this book is superb for QA engineer.

5 out of 5 stars Major rewrite of the best web testing book.......2004-06-20

This is more than a minor update of the first edition of this highly regarded book - it's a major rewrite with added material on mobile web testing.

As in the earlier book, this one clearly shows the differences between traditional testing and web testing, which will provide QA professionals who are moving from older environments into web-based systems an orientation and direction. For new QA professionals the chapters on software testing basics, networking and web application components provide a solid foundation. The chapter on mobile web application platforms is unique to this book, and adds true value. Other core material includes test planning, and a sample application and test plan to add realistic scenarios to the material.

Web-specific test advice encompasses UI, functional, server-side, database, help, installation, compatibility, security and performance testing. These cover all facets of the test process and associated procedures in a web-centric environment. Additional chapters include using test scripts, testing mobile web applications, and web testing tools.

While the core content is on the mark and accurate, the appendices are as invaluable. These include a test plan template, weekly status report template, error analysis checklist (with error examples), UI test-case design guidelines (common keyboard navigation/shortcut matrix and mouse action matrix web), test-case design guideline: input boundary and validation matrix, display compatibility test matrix, and browser/OS configuration matrix.

If you test web systems this is the most complete book you can read, and it is destined to attain the same 'classic' status as the first edition.

Book Description

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, you have uncovered one of the four hidden scrolls I have compiled about the world of Avatar. This scroll contains sacred information about the Earth Nation -- stories, legends, and facts that I have found so far about this nation -- its history, culture, and tales of its past and present.

Katara tells how she inspired a group of Earthbenders imprisoned on a Fire Nation ship to take a stand; Aang explains how he managed to outsmart the great Earthbender, King Bumi; and Sokka recounts the tale of the Great Divide. Included are sections on Earthbending moves, the great Earth Kingdom Kyoshi Warriors, and more.

Keep this scroll safe, and share it only with those you trust. Beware, for there are many who wish to expose its secrets....

For fans that are always seeking to always learn more about the world of Avatar, I definitely recommend these Lost Scrolls; not only do they contain resumed chapters, but also information that is not mentioned nor in the series. One really learns a lot.

I have seen the movies and I like this book because I learned the legend of Omashu, that wasn't included in the movies. Each of the "Scroll" books have 3 different legends. This book is not a cartoon book, it is more of a chapter book. There are lots of pictures, some not from the movie. If you really want to know more about Avatar I recommend this book.

Book Description

This practical reference guides programmers developing Linux applications or porting applications from other platforms. Linux is fundamentally similar to Unix-so, much of the book covers ground familiar to Unix programmers-but this book consistently addresses topics from a Linux point of view. The aim throughout is to provide the detailed information you need to take full advantage of Linux.

If you are already a proficient Unix programmer, this book will greatly facilitate your transition to Linux. You will also find helpful discussions of some tricky Unix topics, such as process and session groups, job control, and tty handling.

If you are a C programmer, but know neither Unix nor Linux, reading this book in its entirety and working with its numerous examples will give you a solid introduction to Linux programming.

If you are already a Linux programmer, this book's clear treatment of advanced and otherwise confusing topics will surely make your programming tasks easier.

Linux Application Development is divided into four parts. Part 1 introduces you to Linux(the operating system, licenses, and documentation. Part 2 covers the most important aspects of the development environment(the compilers, linker, loader, and debugging tools. Part 3-the heart of the book-describes the interface to the kernel and to the core system libraries, including discussion of the process model, file handling, directory operations, signal processing (including the Linux signal API), job control, the POSIX( termios interface, sockets, and the Linux console. Part 4 describes important development libraries with interfaces more independent of the kernel. The source code from the book is freely available at http://www.awl.com/cseng/books/lad/.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to get started with Linux.......2007-10-18

I bought this book to help me with my first C programming project under Linux. I actually read the first 4 chapters straight through, which is unusual for a programming book. The section on termio was excellent and helped me to avoid many of the pitfalls that are overlooked on several programming web sites. This was probably one of the most useful programming books I have bought in the last year. (I usually buy 15 to 20 a year).

5 out of 5 stars I found the book I need.......2007-01-22

Here the book I need for GNU/Linux System Programming :)

And if you have also "Advanced Programming in Unix Environment" the you have the complete bible to program in Linux Environment :)

3 out of 5 stars Overrated Linux programming book.......2006-09-06

I read both editions of this book. When I read the 1st edition, the 2nd was not out, yet. Then the 2nd came out, I read it, too, hoping it's much improved. I was not impressed, however, either. To me, there is plenty of what listed in the book, but not enough why on the things listed.
A better alternative, I think, is "Linux Programming by Example: The Fundamentals" by Arnold Robbins. Arnold says in that book he plans to write more subsequent volumes on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of good info in one place, but organization needs work.......2005-02-15

The Linux operating system provides a sophisticated framework for running programs. Within its sturdy covers, Linux Application Development by Michael K. Johnson and Erik W. Troan provides much of what intermediate to advanced programmers need to know to take advantage of that framework.

The book is divided into four major parts: Getting Started, Development Tools and Environment, System Programming and Development Libraries.

Part 1 - Getting Started, is a very high-level overview of Linux itself. The three chapters cover barely 20 pages, and discuss the history of Linux, its licensing, and the online documentation.

Part 2 - Development Tools and Environment gets more detailed, but ends up as a medium-level view of what tools you might use to actually create and debug your application. Six chapters covering about 75 pages discuss editors (Emacs and vi), make, the GNU debugger gdb, tracing, gcc options, glibc, memory debugging tools, libraries, and the environment. Each chapter feels a little light-weight except for the one on memory debugging tools.

If the first two parts seemed to just skim the surface somewhat, Part 3 - System Programming definitely dives into the deep end of the pool. Part 3 has 13 chapters and covers 450 pages, almost two-thirds of the total book. My major complaint with Part 3 is that related chapters appear to be separated by others. Five major groups of functionality are covered.

The Unix/Linux process model is explained in detail in Chapter 10, and should be followed by chapter 15, which goes into job control. File handling is introduced in chapter 11, expanded in chapter 13, and directory handling is covered in chapter 14. Interprocess communication is discussed in chapters 12 - Signal Processing (discussing simple semaphores) and chapter 17 - Networking with Sockets, which extends IPC across the network. User interfaces are covered in chapters 16 (terminals and pseudo-terminals), 20 (virtual consoles), and 21 (text-based interfaces for the Linux console). Timers, encryption, and writing secure programs are the topics of chapters 18, 19, and 22.

Finally, Part 4 covers the various development libraries commonly available to the programmer. Chapter 23 covers the ins and outs of string handling and regular expressions. Using S-Lang to handle the terminal is the main interest of the next chapter. Chapter 25 discusses database interfaces, specifically qdbm, which is licensed under the LGPL. Traditional option functions getopt and getopt_long and their cousin on steriods popt are detailed in the following chapter. The final two chapters cover dynamic loading of shared objects with the advantages that provides, and user identification and authentication, covering id-to-name translation, and Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM).

This book has a lot of information packed within its covers, When programming, one needs a number of reference books at hand, and Linux Application Development should definitely be one of the handiest. My only concerns were how the first two parts seemed skimpy compared to the rest of the book, and the part on System Programming could have been laid out better. That said, Linux Application Development rates a 4 out of 5.

4 out of 5 stars Will become a well-worn addition to your programming shelf.........2005-01-08

(This review is for the second edition)

If you're involved in trying to port software to a Unix/Linux application platform, you should get a copy of the 2nd edition of Linux Application Development by Michael K. Johnson and Erik W. Troan (Addison Wesley). This will become a key part of your learning.

Chapter Breakout:
Part 1 - Getting Started - History Of Linux Development; Licenses And Copyright; Online System Documentation
Part 2 - Development Tools And Environment - Development Tools; gcc Options And Extensions; The GNU C Library; Memory Debugging Tools; Creating And Using Libraries; Linux System Environment
Part 3 - System Programming - The Process Model; Simple File Handling; Signal Processing; Advanced File Handling; Directory Operations; Job Control; Terminals And Pseudo Terminals; Networking With Sockets; Time; Random Numbers; Programming Virtual Consoles; The Linux Console; Writing Secure Programs
Part 4 - Development Libraries - String Matching; Terminal Handling With S-Lang; A Hashed Database Library; Parsing Command-Line Options; Dynamic Loading At Run Time; User Identification And Authentication
Appendix A - Header Files; Appendix B - ladsh Source Code; Glossary; Bibliography; Index

With the recent rapid uptake of Linux-based servers and desktops, more and more companies are looking at porting their software from Windows platforms over to Linux. The trouble with porting in that instance is that the underlying operating system dependancies are all different, and unless you understand how to work with the OS, you're lost. Linux Application Development does an excellent job in first introducing the common tools that are used for application development on Linux. The assumption is that you'll be programming in C, but within that framework the authors explain each tool and how it can aid in developing your system (such as memory-checking tools that come with the GNU C library). Once the subject of application development environments is finished, they move on to the actual OS and how it should interface with the application. The book presents a lot of code for examples, as well as explaining exactly why things work as they do. By the time you've gotten to the end of the material, you should have a more-than-adequate understanding of how to build applications for Linux/Unix.

Excellent material for the application developer who needs to build on the Linux platform...

3 out of 5 stars I see only vague similarities..........2007-09-08

This book consists of two parts: the "story" (actually more of a rough outline of an undeveloped story) and a listing of "evidence" that the creators of the Terminator and Matrix series plagiarized the book in creating their works. My view on the story portion first, as the "evidence" portion is by far the majority of the book and takes longer to review:

The basic premise is that the majority of humanity has been enslaved by an alien. A prophecy states that a savior, the chosen one, will come with divine powers to free humanity. The book is *very* short, and is obviously unfinished, a fact the author does not deny (although calling an obviously incomplete rough draft her "masterpiece" seems a bit misleading to me). The story, such as it is, is fairly interesting, and there some fairly good metaphors and philosophical leanings in it. All in all, as it stands now it's not very good. If the author finished it, it might be a fantastic story. Or it might suck. "The devil is in the details," as they say, and the true test of an author is not whether they can come up with an interesting backbone to their story; it's whether they can flesh it out with interesting, compelling characters and events that draw you in that determines whether a story is good or not. However, considering that this story has been in an unfinished state for 26 years, it seems unlikely Ms. Stewart will ever finish it.

The majority of the book consists of the author trying to prove plagiarism on the part of the creators of "The Terminator" and "The Matrix." There are copies of receipts, correspondence, and various legal documents detailing her copyright dates, court cases, etc. While I don't doubt that Ms. Stewart is telling the truth about when she wrote her story, what she fails to do is show conclusive, direct connections between her ideas and those of the two movie series.

Most of the similarities I see between "The Third Eye" and the Terminator/Matrix series are superficial, and not indicative of plagiarism. One such example is the prophecy of the coming of a savior with superhuman powers to free an enslaved humanity. I've read many books with this basic premise, and like the Matrix and Terminator movies, most had little to nothing in common with this book. Some predate it (not terribly difficult as it remained unpublished until 2006) and many predate the original copyright date of 1981.

Should Ms. Stewart win her suit against the creators of the Terminator and the Matrix, I'm interested to see if George Lucas sues her to collect his fair share. After all, Star Wars was written in 1974 and released in 1977, two years before she wrote this and four years before she copyrighted it. It has a prophecy of a savior (someone will come to bring balance to the Force) with superhuman powers (Jedi Force Push, anyone?) who, after adolescence, experiences a "spiritual awakening" in response to a stressful situation, which unleashes his latent powers. He then fights against the oppressors (the evil Empire) to free enslaved humanity. Of course, if Lucas wins his case, God might need to bring a civil suit against him because, after all, this is the basic premise of the New Testament story as well.

Most of the similarities Ms. Stewart claims are constructs common to nearly every epic story. There's a powerful entity who's enslaved most of humanity. Nearly every epic story has an evil robot/alien/really bad guy who's enslaved, or trying to enslave, an entire population, whether that population be a tribe, a country, a planet, or a galaxy. That's what makes the story *EPIC*. Nobody wants to watch a six hour series on the trials and tribulations of our intrepid hero's trip to the corner store to buy a diet coke. There's a "spiritual awakening", which either gives the hero some insight or knowledge about himself and his quest, or grants him new power and abilities. This is called the "hero's journey", and it's common to thousands of stories. From Wikipedia:

"In the monomyth, the hero starts in the ordinary world, and receives a call to enter an unusual world of strange powers and events. If the hero accepts the call to enter this strange world, the hero must face tasks and trials, and may have to face these trials alone, or may have assistance. At its most intense, the hero must survive a severe challenge, often with help earned along the journey. If the hero survives, the hero may achieve a great gift or "boon." The hero must then decide whether to return to the ordinary world with this boon. If the hero does decide to return, the hero often faces challenges on the return journey. If the hero is successful in returning, the boon or gift may be used to improve the world. The stories of Osiris, Prometheus, Moses, Buddha, and Christ, for example, follow this structure very closely."

Does this sound like a perfect description of "The Matrix"? Absolutely. Does "The Third Eye" follow this pattern as well? Sure. Does this mean "The Matrix" is a copy of "The Third Eye"? Uh, no.

To me, the only strong similarity between the two that isn't a common staple of fiction in general is the fact that Icon is blinded and golden light comes from his eyes. Neo is blinded and sees machine energy as golden light. Neo's view of the machines as luminous beings of light ties into the spiritual metaphors of the movies. Zion (the body) is filmed with a blue tint. The Matrix (the mind) is filmed with a green tint. The Machine City (the spirit) is viewed by Neo as being made of light. After Neo, the messianic savior, brings the three together, the Matrix and Zion are no longer filmed with a tint to represent that the mind, body, and spirit are no longer separate. If you've no idea what I'm talking about, go here: "http://www.wylfing.net/essays/matrix_revolutions.html". Nevertheless, it is a striking similarity. Is it enough to claim copyright infringement? I don't think so, but that's just my opinion, not a legal analysis.

One other similarity of note is the idea of the characters projecting their consciousness separately from their bodies to battle the enemy. This is certainly nowhere near as widespread as the above examples, but neither is it unheard of, especially in computer/cyberspace oriented works. The theme of telepresence, human minds directly controlling artificial bodies, is common in science fiction and has been for decades. With the advent of powerful, widely available computers, especially with the continuing development of video games as an "alternate reality", the idea of cybernetically enhanced characters battling in computer-generated worlds has become commonplace as well. Ms. Stewart certainly did not come up with these ideas, nor can she lay exclusive claim to their use.

Ms. Stewart's claim of plagiarism by the Wachowski brothers hinges on the fact that she sent them a copy of her (unpublished) manuscript in 1986 in response to an ad requesting ideas for comic strips. She never heard from them, nor did she receive her manuscript back. When "The Matrix" was released, she saw similarities between the two scripts. I'm still unsure how she thinks the creators of "The Terminator" (released in 1984, so presumably written at *least* a couple of years prior) got a copy of her *unpublished* manuscript to steal from it. If she makes that connection clear in this book, I completely missed it.

Ms. Stewart gives the strong impression in this book and flatly states in several interviews outside of it that her work was "plagiarized" because she is a black woman. In several interviews she points out various black authors who were unable to get their work made into movies. In one interview she states (regarding "The Third Eye"): "You have to understand I am very subtle with the way I write, I work on the subliminal. When I write I don't want people to be able to tell my race or gender. Look at Octavia Butler the most famous black female science fiction writer they never put her work on the big screen." In another interview regarding "The Matrix", she states: "A lot of the White fans got the connection right away. The Matrix film makes sense that a Black woman would write that." Oh yes, that's the first thing I thought as I watched The Matrix: "This HAS to have been written by a black woman." Given that she mailed her manuscript to the Wachowskis, and never (to my knowledge) gives an explanation for how the creators of "The Terminator" got a copy, it seems unlikely to me that these people had any idea that she was black. Unless she included a snapshot of herself in the package, I seriously doubt they decided to "plagiarize" her work based on her race. To me, therefore, the race card is a cheap stunt and, in my mind at least, serves to weaken, rather than strengthen, her case. Even if she was plagiarized, race had nothing to do with it.

In reading the other reviews of this book, it seems that an inordinate number of reviewers claim personal friendship with Ms. Stewart; the consensus is that she is a very nice woman. I'm sure she is; however, how does that have anything to do with whether the Terminator/Matrix series is similar enough to "The Third Eye" to be copyright infringement? Similarly, I'm left scratching my head as to the intent of the reviewer claiming that the Wachowski brothers are "known transvestites." He is obviously referring to the rumor, denied by the Wachowskis, that Larry is a transvestite who is undergoing a sex change operation and likes to be called Lana. Aside from the fact that there has been no proof whatsoever offered to support this rumor, even if it is true, what in the world does this have to do with the Wachowskis possibly plagiarizing the Third Eye manuscript and this book in particular? Is it common knowledge that all transvestites are plagiarizers, and I just missed it? A couple of other reviewers point to the fact that the Wachowskis haven't had another movie with the success of the Matrix series as evidence that they obviously stole the work from Ms. Stewart. For one thing, the Matrix series is one of the highest grossing series of all time (IIRC, Star Wars is the only one that's higher). It's highly unlikely the Wachowski brothers will ever top the success of the Matrix, and it's unrealistic to expect them to. For another thing, this is hardly an effective strategy to argue Ms. Stewart's case (although it's a strategy she herself employs), as she has never published ANY other work in the 26 years since she roughed out (not published) this work, whereas the Wachowskis have completed numerous other endeavors. Again, this doesn't prove the Wachowskis didn't plagiarize, but arguing that they must have because they haven't since produced a similar work makes no sense when Ms. Stewart has thus far failed to produce a similar work to the Third Eye (or any work at all, for that matter).

4 out of 5 stars The Terminator and The Matrix are connected.......2007-08-22

I haven't read the book yet but if anyone watches the animatrix the First and Second renassaunce it tells the story of how the machines took over and ironically both terminator movies start off that way. Also if you watch the Matrix and Then the first Terminator I can see where Neo would be reborn (aka john conner character) in order to save the future. then the morpheus/ john conner's father character has to find neo(john conner) before the terminator(agent smith) does, before he changes the future.

the two movies are one. and i believe she wrote it. thats why james cameron didn't want no part of terminator 3

I haven't read the book, and from the reviews, I can't decide whether to or not. The reviews seem fairly evenly split between the believers and non-believers in Ms. Stewart's claims, though both agree that her plot device of "the one" as a savior of humankind from slavery is echoed in The Matrix and Terminator trilogies. Interesting, though, that all reviewers looking to comment on the connection of 'The Third Eye' to the Matrix seem quite firm in their opinions, be they for or against the connection.

I first spoke with Sophia Stewart about her work a year before I even read her book. Not only is she a very nice lady but the passion and detail in her voice made me a beleiver before reading ANYTHING! I've now had her book since April and I must say it is not only a masterpiece, but is the source of the "Matrix" and "Terminators". It is truly ahead of its time for something written in 1979. I cannot wait not only for her to be fully compensated, but for her next work! Keep up the good work Sophia and if you read this I WILL find and bring you what me and you talked about. your friend Cori.

5 out of 5 stars phenomenal and original work by a pioneer for the new century........2007-05-17

I enjoyed this book and totally agree that she is the original writer of the Matrix and Terminator films. She is like Lewis Latimore to Wachowski's
Alexander Graham Bell.Alexander Graham Bell gets credit and Lewis Latimore
,a black american, the original desiger of the telephone gets no credit or respect. She is like Imhotep to James Cameron's Hippocrates. In history,
hippocrates gets credit;however, imhotep, the black egyptian,is portrayed in
the mummy film as an evil man instead of the father of medicine. How can you denie the facts based on the copyrights in 1981 that she is not the
matrix and terminator creator? If Wachowskis or James Cameron is the creator of the movie, then why aren't they writing more sci-fi movies?
Why did the Wachowski's used Alan Moore's V for Vendetta and are working
on Speed Racers a cartoon of the 1970's? Because they are not the original
writers. Sophia Stewart has fullfilled prophecy of being the oracle and
architect of the matrix. You can just examine her name. According to the
Gnostic Bible or lost books, Sophia means wisdom and she was the creator
goddess of the first matrix. Until Wachowskis,Cameron, hurd,fx,and wbs who
symbolized Iadolboath, the jealous god, rebelled and stole from the Great mother to create the second watered down matrix and terminator to keep you
locked down into materialism. On the other hand, Sophia first blueprint
laid the foundation for the evolution of consciousness. In other words,
She wanted the masses of people to look for God with themselves. In essence, Sophia Stewart based on facts and prophecy is the originator
and creator of the matrix and terminator. Wachowskis and Cameron with the
two corporations must give all her money to her or Maat will serve Justice
one way or another.

4 out of 5 stars Narative Textbook.......2005-10-14

Although "Roark seems to emphasize some events that seem less important to U. S. History" as Mr. Jack A. White stated, this book is written in the narrative stand point. Therefore, it should be read more like a story and not a textbook. If you're using this book in high school, it will be good practice since more college books are narrative.

3 out of 5 stars The American Promise, Volumes 1 and 2.......2000-04-11

This book omits several important events in U. S. History up to 1865. But is sufficient for introductory classes in U. S. History. While it does a sufficient job as a survey source, it is not recommended for an in-depth study of any period in U. S. History. Further, Roark seems to emphasize some events that seem less important to U. S. History.

5 out of 5 stars Security+ .......2006-11-10

In general when studing for any certification, no one book should be considered as the only source of information. If one book, however, is going to be the source for studying for the Security+ Exam, I would recommend reading this one cover-to-cover and take each of the practice questions very seriously as some questions are very close to the ones actually given in the exam. I found the Video Training that is included was not really worth watching. In addition to being a study guide for the Exam, I would recommend keeping it is a reference for the future. The granularity of detail goes beyond that which is needed for the Exam but can be a great help down the road as a Security+ professional.

5 out of 5 stars Helped me pass the Security +.......2006-10-10

This book is covers the topic of Security in depth. It is very methodical in how it presents the material and it was a huge part of my success during the exam. I passed with an 813

Pros - Go to the publishers site Syngress and check the price nine bucks. Very thorough and concise with very few errors. Helped me pass the Exam

Cons - 720 + pages, The DVD is worthless.

Recommendations - get the Exam Cram in addition to this book and MAKE SURE you buy the Exam Cram Practice Questions Book. It contains 700 questions from Measure up that is money well spent!!

4 out of 5 stars In depth look at Security .......2006-08-09

This was the 3rd book I used to study for the Security+ exam. I started with the Mike Meyers book for security+, which was a good starting point for anyone just starting out on the subject and it's concepts. I then moved to the Sybex book.

The last book I picked up was this book. I found it to be very informative and interesting. The one great thing about this book is how in depth they get into the subject of Security.

I think this book goes past the scope of the exam. This book is not meant for those who are study for just the Security+ objectives. I think this book is for those who are more interested in the subject on a larger scale.

The last thing about this book I can say is that this is not a book to start with. If you are just starting out with security concepts and have no experience or study of any other kind then I would suggest you start with a different book and work your way up to this one.

In regards to the DVD... I watched the first 3 chapters and I was bored to tears. I thought (from what I had seen) that the DVD was a waste of time.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but problems.......2005-12-23

First of all, I passed the test with a 784 first try using only this book as study material and nothing else, so I have to recommend it. Although, it helped that I already had A+, MCSE, and CCNA certifications under my belt. The book is an excellent source of information and should be central to your Security+ study plan.

That said, there are a number of problems with it. First, about 10% of the exam questions simply were not covered anywhere in the book. I was pretty scared when the first question on the actual test was not even covered.

Second, the book is full of typo's and related problems to the point where you actually think that you are the first person to read the book all the way through (they spell explaination as epxlaination 12 times in the same place before each practice test at the end of the chapters, not even a freaking spell check!!!), ESPECIALLY with the end of chapter test questions. The included test questions are absolutely terrible. At least one out of every ten questions is flat out wrong, which makes it difficult to study using these questions. Getting the questions right in the book is more of guessing what the IQ score of the writer is more than knowing the material. A typical example: You are asked to select which "3" items fit a certain question. Answers (A) and (B) have 4 items, (C) has 3 items, and (D) is none of the above. Using common sense you would have already ruled out answers (A) and (B) as being possibilities, and selected either (C) or (D) without even seeing the actual question. But, of course you were wrong and the answer is (A). ???? The practice test questions are riddled with them.

The free online web testing is a joke. There is only one online test, so it is pretty much useless after you take it once. Also, the actual test seemed to test a lot of subject matter that is not on the practice test. I spent a few days reviewing the practice test questions and the subject matter that they covered, but much of that was a waste of time.

Some of the exam tips are wrong. Such as that you are not going to have to know specifics about ACL lists. I got one question that listed a router ACL list with multiple users and groups. The user had no access, but was part of the sales group that did have access. What access level does the user have? The book not only skipped that part, it specifically says that this is NOT tested on. WRONG! Other questions such as the unix command to change permissions and the name of the user password file on a unix machine were also not covered, were told that it was not on the test, and actually was.

Lastly, The training DVD is absolutely useless. First, it looks and sounds like it was made one afternoon with a home video camera in the meeting room at the office. Almost none of the information on the training DVD is on the actual test, because it only gives you very very general information. The Security+ test mostly tests on the specifics, such as what encryption does IPSec use. There is more information in the book chapter summeries than in the entire training DVD.

About 50 million Americans suffer back pain every year, and chronic back pain disables 1 in 40 adults. Back Sense takes a different approach, contending that most chronic back pain is caused not by a damaged spine, but by stress, muscle tension, and inactivity. The aim is to help you reclaim your life and decrease your pain.

The spine might be damaged initially, but it usually heals on its own, the authors assert. After that, stress causes muscle tightness, which results in continued pain. Traditional treatments don't work because they treat the spine, not the stress. The solution: understand your own symptoms and pain, learn to resume full activity, and work with your negative emotions to prevent them from derailing your recuperation.

Part 1 of Back Sense helps you evaluate your own case and determine whether you have warning signs of a serious injury or disease (in which case you must get medical attention), understand the mind-body connection, and examine how stress may be causing your chronic pain. Part 2 teaches you how to bring full physical activity back into your life and manage your negative emotions.

The authors--two of whom relieved chronic back pain with this very program--do not want you to baby your body or limit your life to protect your back. Rather, they contend that "being careful actually appears to be harmful." They explain that "as long as you are trying to get rid of pain, you stay preoccupied with it," creating more tension, and by avoiding "risky" movements, you lose muscle conditioning, making you vulnerable to additional injury. The book takes you through a process of gradually incorporating more exercise and tracking your reactions. The style is simple and friendly, and the book has many plan charts, logs, and other helpful tools. --Joan Price

Book Description

On occasion nearly everyone experiences short-term back pain from sore or strained muscles. But for many who come to treat their back gingerly because they fear further "injury," a cycle of worry and inactivity results; this aggravates existing muscle tightness and leads them to think of themselves as having a "bad back." Even worse is the understandable but usually counterproductive assumption that back pain is caused by "abnormalities"–bulging disks, a damaged spine, and so on. However, these abnormalities are frequently found in those who have absolutely no pain whatsoever. In reality, most backs are strong and resilient, built to support our bodies for a lifetime; truly "bad backs" are rare.

Drawing on their work with patients and studies from major scientific journals and corporations, the authors of Back Sense–all three are former chronic back pain sufferers themselves–developed a revolutionary self-treatment approach targeting the true causes of chronic back pain. It is based on conclusive evidence proving that stress and inactivity are usually the prime offenders, and it allows patients to avoid the restrictions and expense of most other treatments. After showing readers how to rule out the possibility that a rare medical condition is the source of their problem, Back Sense clearly and convincingly explains the actual factors behind chronic back pain and systematically leads readers toward recapturing a life free of back pain.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my life!.......2006-07-27

After going to a conference on Psychotherapy and Mindfulness given by Dr. Ron Siegel, I was inspired to get his book. Having developed back problems (muscle spasms/ "my back went out") a year and a half ago, I was very interested in learning about his approach. While regular yoga has been extraordinarily helpful, I still considered my back vulnerable. This book has challenged this mentality. Since reading this book, I have successfully resumed activities that have I been avoiding since developing back pain. I am more aware of how worrying about hurting my back has made me afraid to use my back in certain ways, and am no longer giving into this worry. This book has changed my mindset regarding back pain and my body. This approach is empowering and I strongly recommend that anyone with a history of back muscle spasms read this book and adopt this method.

2 out of 5 stars made light out of some people's genuine pain.......2006-07-19

Although I agree with the premise that stress can and does cause physical pain and many chronic ailments, there are many of us out there with serious debilitating back problems, that can not be just "willed away" or minimized by meditation and breathing exercises. A small chapter at the end of the book owned up to some of the serious back problems that are, in fact, serious and would need special treatment sometimes (rarely) even surgery. I have a feeling this was inserted as almost an afterthought to prevent any lawsuits from anyone believing you can ignore your serious back problems and get right back to your previous normal life. Unfortunately that's not the case for many people out there who aren't just suffering from muscle spasms and stress.

being advised by a neurologist that I had an enlarged spinal disk
pressing on my sciatic nerve I ended up in an emergency room a
year later where the doctor prescribed a muscle relaxant and advised me to buy books in the book store on back pain. I still
have a sore back on rainy days but I can now lift up to forty
pounds and suffer from no sciatic pain at all. I rave about this
book to anyone who will listen.

Even though my injures were hernaitons with annual tears. So even though he was aware of my injuries he still must think its stress related . WHAT A JOKE. BOOK STINKS

The entire book suggests that your back pain is caused by stress. That's it. No suggested treatment. Now you need to buy a different book on how to de-stress.
