4 out of 5 stars The next chapter in a great collection of stories........2007-06-28

Marvel Two-In-One was an opportunity for Marvel to continue on the "Team-Up" bandwagon of the 70s using The Thing as the stable character throughout. While the first volume of this collection dealt mostly with one-shot stories, this second volume picks up as the series had started to catch its stride. There are several stories that spread out over multiple issues, and we see the inclusion of such guest stars as Nick Fury, Spider-Woman, the Black Panther, Shang Chi, and of course, Spider-Man.

Unfortunately, the team-ups come across as a pretty forced affair and don't make a lot of sense sometimes. One series of stories takes place in London, allowing Ben to team up with Shang Chi, Spider-Woman, and even the Invisible Woman--but where were the obvious choices like Captain Britain or Union Jack? Also, many of the stories follow a standard formula: The villain shows up to terrorize one of the characters, the heroes meet for the first time, they fight each other for whatever reason, then they team up to defeat the villain. Not that bad really, but a little monotonous after a while. Still, it's great to see this title getting the "Essential" treatment. It has some really classic moments throughout and was a great series for its time. The stories hold up well decades later, and it's a fun read.

Book Description

Robert Anton Wilson Explains Everything!
By Robert Anton Wilson

From the author of the legendary underground classic The Illuminatus! Trilogy and many other works comes an unprecedented event: a once-in-a-lifetime meeting with Robert Anton Wilson - captured live on audio. Robert Anton Wilson Explains Everything (or Old Bob Exposes His Ignorance) brings us face to face with one of the most unconventional and brilliant writers of our time, affording listeners an inside view of this enigmatic (and sometimes misunderstood) novelist, visionary, and "stand-up comic for the mystically inclined."
In four engrossing sessions of conversation, Robert Anton Wilson delves into such topics as futurist psychology, the paranormal, God, political conspiracies (real and imagined), the Eight Stages of Consciousness and how to obtain them, life extension and space migration, the origins of language, guerrilla ontology, and much more. Wilson also offers a rare glimpse into his early years growing up in an Irish-American ghetto of New York, his friendship with Timothy Leary, his investigations into various magicks - plus a mind-expanding exploration of Wilson's newest insights into the state of the human predicament.
This Collectors Edition also includes three classic Robert Anton Wilson lectures: The Acceleration of Knowledge, The New Inquisition, and Religion for the Hell of It.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price, even sans lecture material.......2007-03-23

As others have said, this set, despite claiming to on the packaging, does not contain any lecture material. It is 5 discs, all between 70 and 77 minutes long, containing an excellent interview with Mr. Wilson. It ranges from his early years in New York, to Joyce, and on into conspiracy theories with tons of other of Bob's thoughts laced in between.

If you're looking to get this set because of the lecture material, it's not here. Apparently it is intact in the cassette edition, if you can get your hands on that (according to another reviewer here). If, however, you're looking for a long, interesting, and amusing interview with Bob go ahead and pick this up.

I hesitate to give this 5 stars only because it does not fulfill what its packaging says it includes. What is included, in my opinion, is excellent material.

4 out of 5 stars Important info about this set.......2006-04-13

I just got this - it's four long interviews on five discs. NO lecture material. THIS IS AN INTERVIEW BOX.

A friend of mine ordered this, same story, just the five discs.

My guess is, they were going to include three bonus discs but couldn't get the rights, and it was too late to reprint the box.

It's a good set. I especially enjoyed the autobiographical stuff in the first session. The material on General Semantics, "model-theism", and the Eight Circuits makes more sense in print ("Prometheus Rising"), and I didn't need an hour on Joyce and Pound, but this is an excellent intro to RAW's thought.

5 out of 5 stars It's all here and it's Great (well I guess it isn't all here).......2005-11-08

I own the tape version which does contain all it claims to. I guess I owe the reviewer below an apology, though I still feel it deserves more then one star, four or five still, but I can understand the disappointment of getting less then you thought also, probably would have bumped a star or two off for me too. I still don't understand how or why what was on four tapes,(which is the length without the two lecture tapes),is now on Five Discs.

ANYWAYS DID EVERYBODY SEE R.A.W. HAS 2 DVDs "MAYBE LOGIC" AND "WILHELM REICH IN HELL".

WRONG(reviewer below) this collection is Five CDs Six hours long total and it does includes three classic Robert Anton Wilson lectures: The Acceleration of Knowledge, The New Inquisition, and Religion for the Hell of It.
I've owned this set for years now and have listened to it many times, at least 5 times; there is just so much here to take in. I don't know why but even without those 3 lectures this set would be worth considerably more then one star. I own the set on tapes and I thought well maybe they left the lectures off for whatever reason when they switched it over to CD format. I checked Sounds True, the publisher, website and they state it is 5 CDs Six hours long and that the three lectures are here and if it's 5 CDs six hours they are.
I don't know why but the reviewer below either bought it used or a mishap at the manufacture and didn't get it all or a has chosen to Lie for whatever reason.
This set isn't a book on tape, it's an interview with 3 lectures by Bob and it's great, informative, funny, mind blowing stuff. I've listened to it again this year and I wont be surprised if I listen to it again next year. This set and Terence McKenna's The Search for the Original Tree of Knowledge are the only sets I continuously revisit and learn something new from every time I do. Whether you are new to RAW in which case this will make a great introduction, possibly somewhat overwhelming but he explains his ideas, or a long time fan that enjoys being entertained by Bob this collection is Classic.

1 out of 5 stars The Editorial Review is incorrect........2005-11-08

It says:
This Collectors Edition also includes three classic Robert Anton Wilson lectures: The Acceleration of Knowledge, The New Inquisition, and Religion for the Hell of It.

That's completely untrue. The package only contains an interview with Mr. Wilson.

4 out of 5 stars The Only Audio Book I have even tried.......2002-01-14

First off, I hate Audio books. I have a low recall rate for things I hear, so I prefer to read. However, this isn't a book per se, but a running dialogue between RAW and a questionner. Having never heard RAW's voice before, it keeps the attention much better than most radio programs, either.
The six tapes cover a host of topics, but the main topics are the Life and Times of Robert Anton Wilson, Language and Reality, Techniques for consciousness change, politics and conspiracy, the acceleration of knowledge, and the New Inquisition/Religion for the Hell of it. This is great, because you can pick and choose the topic, especially those of us used to CDs.
The conversations are subdued, mellow, coarse, and profoundly funny at times.
If you are not a RAW veteran, however, don't start with this. Much of the information has appeared in some form in his books, and the depth he dives to in print is preferrable.
It is just kind of fun to hear Bob make fun of himself, everyone else, and the possibilty that RAW is full of crap, too.

5 out of 5 stars "Who is the man that'd risk his neck for his brother-man?" (Has it already been used?).......2007-07-25

One of the good aspects of Mr. Cage (and I don't mean Nicholas, of course!!!) is that he doesn't want to be a world-saving superhero; although he wears a rather flashy costume and, sometimes, goes toe-to-toe with superheavies like "Dr. Doom" (but, then again, who hasn't had a run-in with him in the "Marvel Kingdon?"), he makes it quite clear that he's only trying to make a living, and, if he has to knock some evil guys silly in the process, that is too bad!!!
The stories were all excellent, but the highlights of the book are truely issues 48 and 49 with the beginning of his partnership/friendship with "Iron Fist": "Bushmaster" is one real mean dude, "Misty Knight" can give "Foxy Brown" a run for her money (but "Dr. Claire Temple" isn't a slouch, either) and even those two penny-ante hardcases ("Comanche" and "Shades") look menacing. All his and John Byrne's art, too. Awesome, is it not?

    5 out of 5 stars A thorough companion.......2006-12-07

If you plan on visiting the Islands of Cape Verde, this travel guide is essential. I have not found a better or more thorough guide. I currently live here but I am American and I knew nothing of the islands when I arrived. But after living here a while, I discovered that this book is as accurate as I initially thought. There are few things misspelled but that is to be overlooked by the amount of truely uselful and thorough the information is. I also liked the little touches of background and history on each island. It is very well done.

5 out of 5 stars An essential for the cruising bookshelf.......2002-01-28

I first visited the Cape Verdes in 1987 while researching the ATLANTIC ISLANDS, a sailing guide covering the Azores, Madeira group, Canaries and Cape Verdes, now in its third edition. Getting information on the Cape Verdes in the English language was difficult in the extreme -- if only Aisling and Colum's excellent book had been available then! These days no sane person should visit the islands without reading it first. The Cape Verdes come as something of a culture shock after the Canaries -- this book will explain why, and help you get the most from the experience. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect blend of insight and practical help.......1999-06-01

This was just the sort of thing a hardened backpacker needed. It had all the useful nooks and crannies of info you need - plus the fact that it filled in a lot of the extra info you like to get about a place you're seeing. They gave a great account of the islands' history - it was really moving.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a guide in English - And it is excellent!.......1999-01-30

Irwin and Wilson's guide gives you all the factual information you need, and in addition succeeds in capturing the spirit of Cape Verde, with boxes on cultural and historical issues linked to each island. There is no doubt about it: This is the best guide available. If you read German, Rolf Osang's "Kapverdische Inseln" from Dumont is nearly as good and a useful supplement (especially when it comes to photos). The chapters on Cape Verde in Rough Guides' and Lonely Planet's books on West Africa are neither up-to-date nor in-depth enough if you plan to spend more than a few days in Cape Verde (which you should!).

The appendix on Crioulo language in Irwin and Wilson's book is brief but good. Don't be put off by the nasty details on horrible diseases in the section on health!

I don't know of anyone who can make me feel more patriotic than Doris Kearns Goodwin. Her admiration for FDR flows from this speech. If you've read her outstanding 'No Ordinary Time' you've heard most of this before, but hearing her praise FDR in this atmosphere will stir your soul. A great speech about a great man. Oh, to have another President like that. No chance...

The bestselling author of Time and Chance: Gerald Ford's Appointment with History joins the author of Kennedy and Roosevelt: the Uneasy Alliance to lend their unmistakable voices to the groundbreaking Character Above All audio series with their illuminating examinations of two of America's most recent Presidents.

Recorded live at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, James Cannon and Michael Beschloss continue a series of lectures delivered by a team of historians, biographers and journalists assembled by Robert Wilson to explore the Presidential character. Sharing their insight into the Presidents they have written about, these authors and scholars address the larger issue of the impact of the Presidential character on leadership and the creation of trust.

Cannon tells how Gerald Ford, chosen because of his character to replace the disgraced Agnew and subsequently, Nixon, restored stability to the federal government -- but his pardon of Nixon cost him the presidency. Beschloss shows how George Bush was fated to be President in a Republican party lurching far to his right. He avoided unveiling a domestic vision, absorbing himself in foreign affairs, but when he ran for reelection, the voters decided that character and foreign policy triumphs were not enough.

Character Above All is incomparable audio, crackling with the energy and excitement of a great mind at work and the intellectual urgency befitting a topic of lasting national importance.

      Book Description

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and biographer David McCullough lends his unmistakable voice to the Character Above All audio series with a return to the man so memorably profiled in his towering #1 bestseller Truman. Recorded live at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, Austin, McCullough's presentation continues a series of lectures delivered by a team of acclaimed historians, biographers and journalists assembled by editor Robert Wilson to provide a forum for the exploration of the Presidential character. By sharing their insight into the Presidents they have studied and written about, these men and women can focus our attention on the impact of the Presidential character on leadership and the creation of trust. A master biographer speaking on the subject he has already brought to life for millions of readers and listeners, McCullough's discussion of Truman and his presidency confirms why Character Above All is incomparable audio, crackling with the energy and excitement of a great mind at work and the intellectual urgency befitting a topic of lasting national importance.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely awesome.......2006-04-15

I don't even normally listen to audio tapes like these, but being a fan of Harry Truman and David McCullough, I had to get this. I do want to say that I am VERY, VERY hopeful that this comes out on CD. It is absolutely enthralling. Very fun, very educational. As has already been said - every leader should listen to this.

5 out of 5 stars A tasty appetizer for David McCullough master work,.......2001-05-30

Truman. An entertaining one hour speech peppered with anecdotes covering the failures & successes of Truman. There may never have been a person to succeed to the president as unprepared & in such a time of national crises. We were about to invade Japan with perhaps two miilion men & 600,000 casualties. One thing he did know. He could not be Franklin Roosevelt. Nobody could be. He had to be Harry Turman. He knew himself, grew into the job & ranks as one of our near great presidents. Apparently the most important experience of his life was World WarI which he could have avoided in several ways. He found he was brave, he could lead men in adversity & he liked it. He had known disappointments, hated farming, failed as a businessman & was largely ignored as "The Senator from Pendergast." He was honest, stubborn to a fault, loyal, humble but most of all confident in his abilities. You get a flavor of all this in a much too short tape. Read McCullough's "Truman."

5 out of 5 stars A stirring example of character and leadership.......1999-02-28

This cassette should be compulsory listening for ALL leaders. I have heard it dozens of times and it never fails to keep me on track. McCullough's great voice speaking about the character of a great man has produced the finest short audio tape on leadership that I have ever heard. I bought several hundred copies and gave them to managers. Put the character traits of Truman into today's business world and what an improved world it will be. BUY THIS TAPE!! Listen to it many times. It will have a HUGE effect on your life.

      5 out of 5 stars Great history.......2003-11-03

Glanville brings wit, humor and a critical eye to his history of the World Cup.

You get a feel for the drama, the excitement and the raw energy of the World Cup. For example, it is not simply stated that the Brazilians cultivated Mexican fans in 1970, but Glanville adds such memorable lines as "The Brazilians pursued a shrewd policy of 'beads for the natives..'.

Glanville's description of players, even obscure ones, shows dry wit, a keen eye and someone who has done his homework. For example, in describing sturdy Russian sweeper Chesternev(?) Glanville speaks of him "sweeping up diligently in his crouching bird-dog style.." Likewise another player is described not merely as a fast winger but " a strongly-built, moustached, and melancholy figure, with fabled control and finishing power."

And indeed, so he was. You get the sense that this is soccer as it should be played- with supreme confidence and absolute conviction. Despite the literary flavor, this book has meat, solid meat. Who wants a simple rehash of what went down? Glanville begins every chapter with a background to the Cup- the sometimes unsavoury politics and posturing, the jealousies, and then he breaks down the detail of the contenders- their strengths and weaknesses. This solid, meaty analysis, not another rehash of stats we already know.

The viginettes and scenes are amazing, Pele's audacious attempt to beat Viktor from 50 yards out in 1970, the father of Spanish player DiStefano in 62 flying in with a mysterious "magic linament" to heal his son, the "spontaneous" 1970 Mexican crowd that conveniently and noisly gathered outside the English team's hotel, keeping the players awake all night, before the match with Brazil, the blazing speed and mesmerizing moves of the deformed winger- Garrincha of Brazil, the cheeky "street" caper of Maradona's infamous "Hand of G-d" goal, the brave comebacks of Germany in 1982 and 1986, and so on.. You almost get the sense of being there on the field.

Those expecting a cheerleading tome for soccer officialdom would do best to look for another book. Glanville is not afraid to expose the seedy side of the game, nor criticize the FIFA bureaucracy, hooligan fans, coaches and abominable refereeing where warranted, nor do the cynical players and tactics escape his censure.

There are some minor quibbles. In his 1966 edition, Glanville correctly describes Brazil's swift right winger Garrincha as a mulatto, but in the 1970 edition, he is transformed into a South American Indian. In fact, Garrincha was part black, and this is confirmed in Joseph Page's book "The Brazilians". Of course with Brazil, racial categories are fuzzy, but Glanville does correctly point out that the introduction of black players in that country transformed the game. Some might object to Glanville even mentioning race, but it is interesting nevertheless to see the width of the Black Disapora, and the increasing blend of cultures in sports, and how sports can, in its own limited way, bring people together. Thanks to Glanvile, these glimpses range from "the Black Diamond" Leonidas of Brazil back in 1938, to the swift black winger Andrade of Uruguay circa 1950, to Gatejens, scorer of the shocking goal that upset England in 1950 (yes, the segregated, Jim Crow US had "colored" players), to the pantherine Eusebio and silky smooth Coluna of Portugal in 1966, to the corruscating Teofilo Cubillas of Peru of 1970, to the powerfully built sweeper, Tresor, of France, circa 1982.

Glanville's book is also invaluable for its many pictures of past players, particularly the older editions. All in all, a must read for every true soccer fan. Something for everyone- the young fan looking for heroes and pictures, the educated dabbler, or the hard-core afficionado.
