There are plenty of heavily pedigreed personal-finance experts dishing out good advice, but not many who know what it's like to have to eat ramen all month to make a car payment. On the other hand, there's Mary Hunt, a recovered credit card addict whose free-spending ways landed her family in the middle of $100,000 of unsecured debt in the early 1980s. Pulling herself out of that morass gave Hunt the courage to strike out on her own as a writer, motivational speaker, and the brains behind The Cheapskate Monthly, a newsletter and Web site (www.cheapsk8.com) dedicated to promoting the art of living within one's means, a message that grows ever more urgent as the average American family struggles each year to pay $1,200 in interest alone on revolving, unsecured debt.

While Hunt's previous books have echoed some consistent themes--debt bad, saving good--they've addressed a hodgepodge of different areas: building financial confidence in women and kids, doing Christmas without a stack of credit cards, tips for gourmet cooking at low cost. In Mary Hunt's Debt-Proof Living, Hunt finally puts together a financial primer for all--whether retirees trying to decide when to start drawing Social Security or teenagers ready to sign for their first college loans. Security, according to Hunt, is built with simple tools: tithing, saving, paying off debt, creating a contingency fund for emergencies, driving used cars, owning a home, having insurance.

Although Hunt's "been there, spent that" zeal and warmth have turned her into the Ann Landers of personal finance, she's not just an agony aunt for spendthrifts--business experts will find her a savvy marketer who's using her name and story to build, somewhat ironically, a very effective brand. That doesn't negate her sincerity, however, or the fact that her advice is sound, her formulas work, and her Rapid Debt Repayment Plan has kept increasing numbers of families out of bankruptcy. And finally, Mary Hunt's Debt-Proof Living is just a joy to read--its clarity and lack of condescension make it a perfect gift for anyone just starting to understand the basics of money. --Barrie Trinkle

1 out of 5 stars Jesus saves... and pays his credit card bills!.......2007-09-11

There is nothing original in the prescriptions Mary Hunt gives to eliminate debt. On the bright side, it is easy to read and takes almost no effort to understand. On the other hand, I found the references to God and Jesus nauseating. No doubt Ms. Hart loves her religion, but mixing her religious beliefs with the simplistic ideas detailed in this book doesn't add anything. Try "Managing Debt for Dummies".

Everyone should read this book and follow her steps. This is a great way to get out of debt.

5 out of 5 stars Best Budget and Money book out!.......2007-07-16

I first checked this out of the Library but after the third time decieded I needed my own copy. Positive and not degrading like some of the other budget cash only spokes persons.

5 out of 5 stars This book will change your financial life!.......2007-02-24

Pros: Common sense advice that anyone can follow! It WILL help you get your finances in order and help you change your perspective about the monetary side of life. They should make this a mandatory class for high school and/or college students. The website is extremely useful, as well.

Cons: For me, it was disheartening that I could not put the spending plan into immediate action. For someone who is in serious trouble, the advice she suggests may seem too daunting and too difficult to follow. I do not think this is a flaw on Hunt's behalf, but is more an indicator that people with high debt who are spending beyond their means truly need to make more serious and drastic changes to their way of living.

I have posted my personal experience with Hunt's Debt-Proof Living for you if you'd like to read about the positive possibilities that following Hunt's plan offers.

I read Debt-Proof Living two years ago. At that time, we had about $30,000 in credit card debt, we were paying nearly $3000/month on our mortgage, and my husband and I were both driving around in gas-guzzling shiny vehicles. The financial strain was beginning to take it's toll, putting strain on our relationship, our health, and on every aspect of our life. We were living beyond our means, sinking fast, and I reached for this book in desperation.

We were unable to start the spending plan right away because we did not have money to start it with. Every paycheck that came in went right out to keep bills paid just barely on time. As Mary suggested, this was a warning sign that we were living beyond our means and would need to make more drastic changes in order to get to a financially secure place.

First, we traded in my gas-guzzler for about $9000 and I bought a more economical $4000 used car. I still have it, and other than routine maintenance, we have incurred no other cost with it. It also cut our gas expenses significantly. We used the money to make some home improvements so we could put our house on the market. Unfortunately, it took almost a year for our house to sell. All the while we were now falling behind on our mortgage payments and incurring even more credit card debt maxing them all out at $50,000 before it was all said and done.

We finally sold our 3 acre, 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom home last August, we sold a lot our stuff, or just got rid of it, and we moved to a much more modest 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom home, with a small back yard. (I LOVE it!) That cut our mortgage payment by more than half, not to mention cutting my cleaning time by half, too. I took on a part-time job and my husband picked up some extra hours.

This year, we finally got to the place where we could use our tax return to fuel the spending plan suggested by Hunt. It is working like a dream! No more credit cards. We pay cash. If we can't pay cash for something, then we don't get it. We have a savings cushion for unexpected and expected emergencies. This is how it should be. Everyone in my family is happier!

While we are not out of the woods yet with the debt we have accumulated, we can see the light! Even better, if we stick with the spending plan, we will have our home and all of our debt paid off in just 9 years, saving over $100,000 in interest. It will take discipline, but it will leave us with about $40,000 a YEAR just burning a hole in our savings account!

While a total of eleven years, including the two years it took us to get this far, might seem like a long time to get out of debt, had we taken no action, we would have lost our home, and eventually would die of old age and still have the debt! It makes eleven years seem easy!

By following the plan, I have learned just how materialistic and foolish I had been with money. I learned that my family is just as happy, if not happier, with much less "stuff" and space than we had. I have learned to view society in a whole new light, realizing that we are over indulgent and need so much less than we think we need.

What is most important to remember when reading this book is that it is simple, common sense advice for a long term plan. The results that may or may not be seen instantly depending on your individual situation. But ANYONE can improve their financial outlook by following the suggestions in this book.

Ultimately, this book does not give you a band-aid to fix the boo-boos. It gives you a cure!

5 out of 5 stars Ideas that work for everyone!.......2007-01-07

This was one of the first books I read this year as part of my New Year's Resolution to get out of debt. Of all the financial debt books I've read, this one is fantastic. No matter what stage of debt you're in, Mary Hunt's ideas are workable. One of the reasons I liked this book so much is that it gives a simple, easy to follow plan and then backs it up. There are only so many debt books you can read that say: save for retirement! Don't rack up debt! Well, duh. Here's a way to actually deal with it.

This book is definitely worth buying. It is loaded with good information and has pages and pages of specific references (particularly cyber for those who love to spend time on computer). I had taken it from the library and liked it so much that I felt it needed to be a permanent part of my library. Thanks, Amazon!

3 out of 5 stars Life your Life Review.......2007-08-13

Bought this book look for a few financial tidbits we might be missing and there was probably enough to make it worthwhile. A lot of basics and tried and true methods are repeated in this book and just reemphasize that we are doing things 'right.' I like repeating these to my kids as we travel. If we are willing to do a little more work, could save a bit more money with some of her suggestions. I also have to chuckle at the repeated sales pitches in the book for newsletters and templates to help you save money...Overall, a good quick read that can save you some dough.

Mary Hunt is the Real Deal. She's been "there" and back, and is sharing all that she learned along the way. Any book by Mary Hunt is worth the read- she will illuminate the way to living within your means. Most importantly, Mary doesn't believe that it will be easy or magical- but it will change your life. Thank you, Mary- You're the best!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but I've read better..........2005-01-20

This is a good book for a great cause: getting and staying out of debt. However, after reading it, I liked Dave Ramsey's Money Makeover and Financial Peace University MUCH better - more thorough, great ideas, and fabulous examples of how a little money can grow w/ time - which this book, CM, is lacking.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Advice, Albeit Very Basic.......2005-01-19

This is a good, solid, book covering the "basics" of money management. It can be said that Mary Hunt is just reiterating philosophies of money management that have been preached over the decades, if not centuries. Better, more comprehensive, readings include "The Millionaire Next Door", "Your Money Or Your Life", "The Complete Tightwad Gazette", and "The Richest Man In Babylon."

That being said, this book did introduce me to one innovative idea of which I have incorporated into my financial arsenol. It's what called the "Freedom Account". The Freedom Account is a fantastic tool devised by Hunt to manage payment of irregular,
non-monthly bills. The concept is not new, but Hunt's system is definitely the best I've ever come across.

My philosophy on reading books has always been that if I can get just one great new idea, then the investment in time and money is worth it. I can assure you that if you decide to buy this book, the "Freedom Account" system alone is well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars If you're broke or having money problems, buy this book now!.......2003-04-08

Has worrying about money or paying your bills ever kept you up at night?

Me, too. Until I found this book.

About 7 years ago, our family was suffering from unbelievable money problems. Depressed and confused, I decided to stop by the bookstore and browse the personal finance section. There was only one problem. I didn't have twenty or thirty dollars to buy money management advice. I decided to get Mary's book and could not believe how many great examples and strategies she gave for reducing debt.
By following Mary's instructions, our family quickly began reducing our debt and wiped out almost $ 20,000 of credit card bills within a few years.
Her book is my money "Bible" and like scriptures in a holy work, I have highlighted paragraphs on almost every page that give insights into a subject that had always been beyond my control.

This book saved my marriage and brought me peace.
I highly recommend it. . . to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2002-12-17

I really like Mary Hunts books I find them a lot more useful than books like the tightwad gazette which is way to extreme.Mary Hunts books are full of good useful information.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Book!!!.......2002-07-25

I subscribe to Mary's CheapskateMonthly.... and highly recommend both her website and most of her books. I have read and reread the books of hers that I own, of which this is one. If you're having finacial difficulties, get this book and subscribe to her newsletter - you can do this online or through the mail. I swear it's been the best money I've ever spent. And I have actually started to see a difference in my finances.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-01-04

This book has lots of tips, however, it is a disappointment. I have been practicing many of these tips for a long time, so there's not much that is new. Some tips are repeated, some are common sense and others are not practical. I bought this book used and feel I still spent too much, definitely not worth $12.95.

5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2006-12-17

I love all of Mary Hunt's stuff. This book is nice to have as a reference around the house for a bunch of things you have to deal with on an everday basis. Get it, you'll like it. I also recommend any of her other books. I'm glad she brings God into her everyday life and her financial advice, also.

3 out of 5 stars doesn't live up to the hype.......2006-11-13

I was hoping for so much more. There are a few good tips in here, but not enough. I was disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing new.......2005-10-16

There really aren't any earth shattering ideas. Most are common sense or you can find them elsewhere. Also, tips seem to be repeated and right next to each other. There will be two ways to clean glass and they're only slightly different. It'd be nice to have it consolidated and an index

5 out of 5 stars Everyday Cheapskate's Greatest Tips.......2005-08-24

I love how pratical this book is. It's a fast read with a lot of useful tips that I can use right now. (Lord knows I need help).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars corny but good.......2007-05-08

The information was very helpful, and I have passed on copies to my married children. It is a little hard to get past the folksy style of writing.

5 out of 5 stars How to get financially naked.......2006-07-24

Something has happened to Mary Hunt since her 1999 publication on Debt-Free Living. Or perhaps it's happened to her editor. Or perhaps a ghost writer has slipped into her life.

Regardless, the same passion and good sense is now expressed with a pleasant and flowing presentation that makes her medicine all the more bearable to the debt-laden patient.

Simply put, this lady can write!

Mary Hunt's book about finances in marriage sparkles. She has taken conventional wisdom about marriage, gender differences, and biblical teaching about a generous Creator and woven it together with her trademark 10-10-80 approach to managing money (give 10%, save 10%, spend 80%). Revell has helped out by packaging a supremely attractive book (the colors, the spacing, the flawless editing ...) at a decent price.

A major first section sports the title 'Get Your Relationship Ready for Financial Harmony'. Hunt's own story reveals that she knows how taxing financial stress and indebtedness often are on a marriage, so she's chosen to invest significant pages reminding her readers of some basic gender patterns and communication skills. You'll get a little bit of 'Men are from Mars, Women from Venus ...' language in this section, but always winsomely packaged and with an awareness of how individuals vary.

Then it's on to 'How to Debt-Proof Your Marriage', ten short chapters that present material Hunt has developed and presented elsewhere since the 1992 launch of her 'Cheapskate' business.

A third section ('Unique Solutions for Common Dilemmas') is almost an extended set of appendices, each valuable for reference or inspiration.

As a reader of a fair amount of material on debt and its effects on individuals and families, I have gravitated to Mary Hunt's work as the steady best. Debt-Proof Your Marriage is her high watermark thus far.

5 out of 5 stars save your money and your marriage.......2005-09-11

When it comes to financial matters, do you find that you and your spouse speak a different language? Is one of you a spender, the other a saver? Would your marriage be stronger if you could somehow work as a team to manage your finances and get out of debt?

Notice that I didn't ask if your marriage would be stronger if you had more money. Mary Hunt aptly notes that money problems are about more than a lack of money. Money problems are the result of conflicting attitudes and habits, and indicate just how well you and your spouse communicate and combine the two.

Debt-Proof Your Marriage is written in three parts. Part 1 explains the relationship side of the equation, enabling you to prepare the groundwork for financial harmony. Part 2 gets into the numbers, starting off with six debt-proof principles that are powerful and easy to understand. Part 3 provides resources to help you apply parts 1 and 2.

All of this is written from a Biblical perspective, from someone who has walked the walk. Both frank and friendly, this is a sound message that will improve both your pocketbook and your marriage.

4 out of 5 stars Best of Cheapskate Monthly.......2004-05-20

I have to admit, I don't understand the other reviews, but then again I'm not into dumpster diving or making things from dryer lint. I'm looking for advice from someone who's been there and done that! Mary Hunt is that person. Her slogan of "Bringing Dignity to the Art of Living Within Your Means" says it best. I loved this book, and her updated and combined book "Complete Cheapskate" brings us into the new century!

3 out of 5 stars Miserly Moms is Heaps Better!.......2002-06-19

I read this book and like the other people who made reviews, I found that too many chapters were taken up with credit card advice. I also didn't particularly like the format of the book. You had to read chapters upon chapters to find any useful information rather than in point format. Some of the information was useful, but I think Miserly Moms and The Tightwad Gazette's are much better.

2 out of 5 stars Read the "Tightwad Gazette" books instead........2000-07-31

While this book is acceptable, like other reviewers I found it a bit over-emotional and feel Amy Dacyzycn's tightwad books are MUCH better. This reads a bit like a Heloise book, lots of scattered tips, some are good, some are obvious. Half the book is spent talking about credit cards. Yes, credit cards can be evil, but it all depends on the person using them. Overall, I was not very impressed with this book, and I'm glad I got it out of the library.

1 out of 5 stars Tightwad Gazette is ten times better!.......2000-03-14

Although some of Mary Hunt's work is OK for people who have a major problem with credit card debt, most of her suggestions are obvious and not terribly insightful. Tightwad Gazette is far more practical, and much less padded with silly emotionalism.

2 out of 5 stars good for beginners.......1999-12-04

Mary Hunt's books are good for the beginner. This is a rehash of her other book as the last person wrote, so only purchase one. If you want every possible option there is to save money, read the Tightwad Gazette 1-3.

4 out of 5 stars Debt-Proof Your Marriage (Debt-Proof Living).......2007-04-30

I like this better than several of the other debt related books I've read in the last couple of years. not as exciting as say Dave Ramsey, but I like her better. I would recommend this to someone who needed practical advice on how to change their perspective on debt.

got out of debt last year...no thanks to any of the books I've read.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent advice on debt-proofing your marriage.......2005-12-22

I downloaded this audio CD to my MP3, and have listened to several times over on walks. She comes across as a little old-fashioned, and her voice drove me crazy the first time I listened, but generally very good, sound advice. Much of her material is consistent with Dave Ramsey (except she advises that you keep one credit card. No thanks). For a full review on her book, read the online reviews for the hardcover and paperback versions.

5 out of 5 stars Debt-Proof Your Kids Review.......2007-01-18

This is a great book with many great points and ideas. I can't wait to start implementing the Salary Plan!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for all parents!.......2000-06-16

This book is both extremely readable and extremely useful as a resource for parents with kids of all ages. If you're like me, you grew up with parents who didn't realize that money values need to be taught. As a result, growing into a financially healthy adult has been a long path of many avoidable mistakes. I was so thrilled to read Mary Hunt's advice so that I can give my kids the tools to master their own finances without making my mistakes. I'm buying a copy for all of my cousins and friends with kids ...

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2000-04-02

Good way to make your kids not make the same credit mistakes that you have made!
