I was kind of weary about ordering on-line for the first time but was pleasently surprised. This was a great first experience and plan on ording all my books through amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars Fun mathematical Ideas.......2001-08-13

"Ideas" is the key here as we have calculators, computers, and what not to do any real number crunching or comparing. This book carries you from zero to the edges of most any mathematical discipline. The information in the margins ties the theories back to reality. At the appropriate locations in the margin are postage stamps from around the works are shown commemorating the individual mathematicians and scientists relating to the subject being studied. There is a section in the book with the answers to all the odd questions.

Book Description

For thirty years this has been the acknowledged standard in advanced classical mechanics courses. This classic book enables readers to make connections between classical and modern physics - an indispensable part of a physicist's education. In this new edition, Beams Medal winner Charles Poole and John Safko have updated the book to include the latest topics, applications, and notation, to reflect today's physics curriculum. They introduce readers to the increasingly important role that nonlinearities play in contemporary applications of classical mechanics. New numerical exercises help readers to develop skills in how to use computer techniques to solve problems in physics. Mathematical techniques are presented in detail so that the book remains fully accessible to readers who have not had an intermediate course in classical mechanics. For college instructors and students.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good contents but can be written clearer.......2006-12-21

I gave this book a 4-star because some parts of it are in fact not so clearly written, as some of the previous reviewers have pointed out. Yet it is probably the only book out there that explains classical mechanics at the level of sophistication and comprehensiveness suitable for an advanced physics student. This book is aimed at the graduate audience but in my opinion any undergraduate students with a solid introductory mechanics course should have no problem understanding most of the materials in this book though I have to admit that the authors did not do a very good job in explaining the concepts.

A distinct feature of this book is that it tries to teach classical mechanics in a way that illuminates many analogous approaches in quantum theory. By this I mean the theoretical constructions such as the Hamilton-Jacobi theory, Poisson brackets, canonical perturbation theory, relativistic field theory, and so on. This book is probably a must read for beginners of theoretical physics because some of the theoretical methods exploited here appear almost ubiquitously in other fields of physics. In the study of other subjects of physics, I was often reminded of the little bits of things I picked up from this book: variational principles, tensors and forms, symmetry groups, field theoretical ideas, etc.

Of course, the main goal of this book is to introduce the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of classical mechanics. The book is actually strong in this aspect. The first few chapters I think are very well written, especially the chapter on central force which is the most thorough treatment I have seen. There are things one hardly sees in other books of this type, such as the Lenz vector which would find a beautiful use in the quantum Kepler problem. However, the book tends to lose clarity in the latter chapters. The three chapters on Hamiltonian mechanics can be much better written. The chapter on chaos serves as nothing but a really rough introduction. Readers interested in these areas will probably benefit better by looking at other books written exclusively on Hamiltonian dynamics or chaos.

After all this is a good book mostly because I haven't yet found any other book at this level that does a better job. If one finds it difficult to read I would suggest getting the book by Marion and Thornton which contains many step-by-step derivations and tons of examples and in my opinion serves as a great companion to this book. Another book at almost the same level is the legendary book by Landau which is extremely concise and get-to-the-point. So some people may like Landau's style better. However, in my opinion, no other books can really replace this one as a comprehensive treatment of classical mechanics.

1 out of 5 stars Who publishes books like this?.......2006-12-12

Goldstein's Classical Mechanics is one of the worst books I have ever read on the subject. It is disturbing that it could have been published on the first place since it is full of very serious omissions and mistakes.

The classical mechanics is based on two basic experimental facts, which lie at its foundations: The Newton-Laplace principle of determinacy and Galileo's principle of relativity. These fundamental principles are never stated in the book. More over the authors are confused about such elementary notions as phase space and configuration space probably due to the fact that phase space could be identified with a tangent bundle or cotangent bundle of the configuration space depending weather we use Lagrangian or Hamiltonian formalism.

After the reading of this book novice reader might be under the false impression that the most of mechanical systems are integrable since all examples and problems stated in this book are of that type. There is no place in this book for Arnold-Liouville's theorem on integrability.

Even such elementary topics like the chapter on Rigid Body are full of serious mistakes as mixing of the body and space coordinates. The authors prefer lengthy "intuitive" explanations to the few simple lemmas from the operator theory.

A short excursion to non-holonomic mechanics is disastrous and should be considered as totally wrong. The same goes for the chapters on canonical transformations, Hamilton-Jacobi theory and action-angle variables.

This list goes on and on.

The book in its present form is beyond repair and should not be used.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to Mechanics.......2005-12-20

Goldsteins Classical Mechanics is a standard reference in intermediate theoretical physics, suitable for second year theoretical, and third year experimental physics. Its contents include material beyond the scope of two periods, but most of the material can be covered during this time.
Classical mechanics is a mathematically modest treatment of mechanics, and the most advanced topic included is calculus of variation. However, most topics are given a rigorous treatment, and when this is not available a reference is given. Examples are somewhat sparse in the book as this is not a solution manual but a treatment of physical theory. However, working out exercises is essential for understanding the text and this is for many a turning-point, the exercises are not easy and do not simplify like problems of basic courses. But for those who work a great award awaits.
The last chapter of the book is an introduction to Chaos, with emphasis on aplication. For a more rigourous treatment differential geometry, the language of mechanics, and algebra is needed. However, it is clear that this would take the book beyond an introduction to mechanics, which it only is.
For those who have motivation and a good lecturer with notes to support the book, such as more examples, Goldsteins Classical mechanics is excellent. A note should be made, the book is probably too hard for sensible self-study, conversation and insight of others is invaluable.

4 out of 5 stars Standard classical text but is it the best ever?.......2005-05-24

I will not tell you about the glorious life Dr. Goldstein lived, or his personality or his beliefs, I think a reader is more concerned about his work -especially- as a student. His book classical mechanics is known to be one of the most famous throughout the world, like to form an epistemological basis for the scientists working in this field. In my opinion it is not the best book in this field, I am sorry to be compelled to confess this. The book is written with a motivation to put you in a mode of awe: "Oh man this guy has read all these material, 25,000 books , Oh my God!". But in fact he is like vomiting all the information on you, or at least in a way that looks like unprocessed food. A good book for some topics like central force fields etc, unique in Canonical transformations and Poisson Brackets, but let us be honest for a while and ask ourselves: Are there better books may be for a Physics student? I think there are: Marion`s Classical Mechanics is a very nice book for starters. The book by Walter Greiner is also a nice book in my oppinion, with all its exercises, and chapters on Chaos and non linear theory. The book by Friedhelm Kuypers is also another nice book, the unfortunate thing is it is called Klassische Mekanik, -in German-, no body ever traslated it. If you really really like the abstract, most exclusive way of doing it, how about Constantine Caratheodory, that to me is the most supreme book written by a true genius.I was lucky cause my professor followed Caratheodory`s book and assigned problems from Goldstein,it was like a piece of cake after having gained the perfect organized way of perceiving the problems, thanx Dr. Y.Guler for this exclusive experience...Let us give all the best credit to Professor Goldstein for his contributions to Orthodox Jewish society and science as well, but be aware of the fact that his book is not a Bible in this field, let me kindly just say that the book was not his greatest achievement. So,you will buy the book for your graduate class, what should you do then? Solve all the problems, and discuss the solutions with the people arround, and always remember that this is not the ultimate step, there is V.I.Arnold and C.Caratheodory beyond H.Goldstein. Do not get exhausted with the never ending math, consider it a life style, as it would be when you really jump into research one way or another. Use the references well, take your time, try to enjoy, cause you will not have an other choice but this book in the graduate school in most American universities..

5 out of 5 stars Sad News- Dr. Goldstein has passed on.......2005-02-17

Herbert Goldstein, Professor Emeritus of Nuclear Science and Engineering at Columbia, died on Jan. 12. He was 82.

Goldstein, long recognized for his scholarship in classical mechanics and reactor shielding, was the author of the graduate textbook, Classical Mechanics. The book has been a standard text since it first appeared 50 years ago and has been translated into nine languages. Goldstein's contributions to nuclear energy were honored by the U.S. Department of Energy, which awarded him the E.O. Lawrence Memorial Award in 1962. In 1977, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the shielding division of the American Nuclear Society.

Goldstein was a professor of nuclear science and engineering at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science since 1961. He received the Great Teacher Award, given by the Society of Columbia Graduates, in 1976. In 1984, Goldstein was the first to hold the Thomas Alva Edison Professorship at the University.

In addition to research, Goldstein devoted time to promoting scientific literacy by teaching undergraduate courses. In 1977, he taught a course he designed to increase scientific understanding of energy issues -- "Nuclear Energy: A Semi-technical View for the Non-scientist." He was also one of the faculty members instrumental in developing an innovative science course for non-scientists, "The Theory and Practice of Science," at the College.

Goldstein was a consultant for Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Brookhaven National Laboratory. He was a fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Nuclear Society, the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Goldstein also was a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers and was a founding member and president of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists. He received a B.S. from City College of New York in 1940 and a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1943.

He is survived by his wife, Channa; his children, Penina, Aaron Meir and Shoshanna; and 10 grandchildren.

1 out of 5 stars think twice before getting.......2006-10-01

unless you have an awesome professor that teaches in detail your going to need additional books/resources to help you learn the subject. all the information in the book is vague, it goes into very little detail, and doesnt help you complete the problems at the end of the chapters

1 out of 5 stars Just go light $119 on fire..........2005-05-25

...and save yourself the grief of trying to learn anything from this book. This is the required text in one of my EE courses and I haven't found a single redeeming quality in it yet.

The material is not presented in a very concise manner I typically spend a great deal of time filtering through the chapters to find the important details. Most of the time I have to go to a text from one of my other courses to find what I am looking for.

The examples are few and not helpful in working the exercises at the end of the chapters.

Any good text on circuit analysis which covers the Fourier and Laplace transforms and their applications would be more useful.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst written college books ever........2005-04-02

Having had to suffer through 1 semester of this book, I was horrified to learn that my school had decided to keep this book for the second semester of signals! This is book would be much better as a hyperlinked document, because the author continuously references other chapters and formula #'s. His examples are confusing, and leave you wondering what you are looking for. A visist to the book's website leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth. Honestly, if you need this book, find another book to use as a reference because you will need it.

5 out of 5 stars HELPED ME A LOT.......2005-02-09

I used this book as an extra study aid for my course. I only used this book to study one concept -- transformations of singularity functions in continuous time. I really didnt need this book for anything else. But based on what I learned in this book it helped me a lot. I didn't go into deep details of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Good for someone who already knows the subject !.......2004-09-16

I bought this book when I and almost the class (very bad teacher gave bad problems) failed the "Signals and Systems" exam , and now I'm thinking from the point of view of someone who knows nothing (actualy I had passed the exam).

The introduction is good presented with enough explanation, but from the moment it reach "Convolution" you will not understand what you have red.The text is poor in explanation but it doesn't disorient you (you will not understand something else, but you will feel empty). The graphs are poor in number and everytime poorly explained.I think the author tried to write as few pages as possible even if he have had to sacrifice the entire content. When reading,it feels as it is compressed (you will not see things twice and some new things are introduced between the lines not leting enough space to be seen). So this edition is doomed and you will have no hope to understand if you want to move quickly (there is a lot of woork).Reguarding being a reference,I think ... it is (I have liked that keywords, formulas and other keythings to be marked in a conventional manner so that I can find them quickly when I'm looking behind). Now I'm looking forward to buy "B. P. Lathi's" book "Linear Signals and Systems" which I hope will be better.

Why I bought this book ? Because the site from which I bought it,hasn't had a "REVIEW" for it.So I realize how important is for us to write reviews. It's about quality that we all want !

Book Description

Introductory Financial Accounting, 9e provides a unique and perfect blend of robust financial statement analysis with early statement of cash flows coverage. It is directed at those who will analyze real financial statements, and make business decisions based upon that analysis. Real statements are used throughout (Starbucks). Statement of Cash Flows comes earlier in this book than most. Material is focused on analysis of financial statements — ratios introduced early and often, special “Portfolio” section provides a “road map” to financial statement analysis, and special section in end-of-chapter problems focuses on analyzing financial statements (using Starbucks financial statements). Features strong coverage of statement of cash flows (Ch 5) --an essential financial statement, one of growing importance, and should be regarded as a basic statement. For financial accountants.

1 out of 5 stars Useless!!!.......2007-04-15

First and foremost, be aware if there are any reviews referring to "textbook", they are not for this "Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" which is supposed to be a textbook companion.

"Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" is useless!!! This is nothing but a bunch of glossary. And a half of the book is blank for writing notes. What a rip-off!!!
There's no outlines at all. No chapter summaries, no
explanation of concepts. Totally useless.

I have used "Collins College Outlines" series (I rate them 3 stars) and "Barron's Business Reviews" series (I rate them 5 stars).

Never buy any of "Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" series.

Technical notes: "Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" is POD (Print on demand). No wonder quality of printing is inferior (Looks like a xerox copy). And priced too high for this quality. For those who are not familiar with publishing industry--POD is used for ultra small quantity less than 100 copies. This is a telltale sign that book is not expected to sell minimum quantity (usually 3,000 copies) that commercial publisher is willing to
commit to publish. Simply put, POD means inferrior and
overpriced books. A work of amateur.

It coverage of topics and pedagogical flow are quite approachable and manageable. Struggling friends begain to purchase it for themselves. An excellent book. An interesting book as well. Case examples and references keep things interesting. Not just dry rules.

5 out of 5 stars The best steel design reference.......2007-03-11

This book covers the basics and fundamentals of steel design in such a way that provides a great reference for the structural engineering student or professional. Possibly the best book you can find in the field.
I've been using it since graduate school and through the years as a consultant in structural engineering.

5 out of 5 stars The Standard.......2006-11-20

This is simply the best book on steel design out there, and anyone interested in learning the subject needs to read it. It covers the crucial aspects of the AISC code in a unified manner and is quite readable. The authors begin each topic in the book with the detailed background mechanics behind the observed structural behavior and then proceed to verify these ideas with experimental evidence. Next the authors explain how the the code provisions result practically from these ideas. Finally, the authors offer a number of solved examples in design and analysis and explain the methods used to solve them.

This is exactly the way that a book on design should be put together. The code is not a black box, but sometimes it can be presented as such. In order to properly design or analyze a real building, you need a firm grasp of the basic and not so basic principles of structural mechanics and the empirical evidence that backs it up; you can't simply be a "Code Monkey" and expect to do a whole lot more than determining if a W10x16 or a W10x14 should be erected. Salmon and Johnson really explain steel structural engineering in this book, and if you make an effort to seriously learn the material, you will gain tremendous dividends in your understanding of these complex and interesting topics.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-07-10

This book thoroughly describes design procedures with numerous examples using both LRFD and ASD design, exactly what I need as an intern engineer. Sometimes I find the examples difficult to follow when units are not carried through and commentary left out; however, details are plentiful enough to eventually catch on. The AISC Manual of Steel Construction is constantly referred to and thus necessary to follow examples fully (I broke down and purchased it). Lastly, readers should be on the lookout for typos as I have spotted several.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best General Steel Structural Design Book Available.......2006-01-15

Given the available books on the market for general steel structural design in the U.S., this is by far the best. The breadth of topics covered is abundant without any sacrifice in depth of full backround and commentary, which is sorely missing from other books of this kind. The layout and presentation of information is very clear and readable.

Although a new edition covering changes in the industry since the last publication would be greatly appreciated, the book taken for when it was published is still very applicable for use now (despite reviews to the contrary given below). Any competent engineer can adjust to changes in industry standards as the base material given in the book is very solid and sound.

The proof in the outstanding quality of this book is trying to use other similar books in the market today, which generally fall short in comparison.

Great book! Lots of theory and examples to support subject matter. Unfortunately, sometimes the theory and layout of the book becomes overwhelming. THE reference for P.E. exam.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not great.......2006-04-20

For starters, this isn't a general interest book. Only people who have personal interest in protocol, vestments, precedence, ceremony, etc. If you're looking for something lighter, this isn't the way to go, especially with almost no copies around being sold for less than $100.

If you're like me and you're into these things, this book is a pretty good investment. It's also a must-have reference books if you're, say, an organizer for a party that will have Catholic clerics as guests. The book even gives proper seating plans and the proper order for processions.

It offers more than what you can find by simply looking on the internet. Like, the most authoritative source on the net is probably the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia, but the problem with the Catholic Encyclopedia is that their articles are ridiculously ancient, having been written before 1920. Remember that after Vatican II, a lot of the rules, procedures and vestments changed, so a lot of what the Catholic Encyclopedia has is just irrelevant today. The Church Visible has more current info.

It has a few flaws. Even with the ridiculously-high market price that's out for this book these days, it's still rather lacking. The author tells us about the vestments and clothes, including their histories. However, he fails to tell us why the vestments are the way they are, what symbolism was put into why they look that way. If the vestments had no reason for being the way they are, then they're useless. There is great symbolism in them and we must not forget that.

It would have been nice if the author could have included info about the Eastern Catholic vestments, rites, protocol, precedence, etc.

A couple extra bonuses in the book, in the back they have the names and addresses of various Roman tailors where you can buy the goods, and the beginning section of the book has some stuff to do with Conclaves. In the case of the latter, however, the info on Conclaves isn't as in-depth as you'd probably like. For books that give a deeper study into Conclaves and current events with the Church, look for books by John Allen, which are far more in-depth than The Church Visible.

This book came out ten years ago. I think it's a good idea for them to make a new edition of it, not only to keep everything updated, but also so that the high prices for the book can be lowered.

2 out of 5 stars Roman Tradition, Lite.......2001-07-19

This book is a disappointment to the serious scholar of the ceremonial traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. While the sections on current etiquette and papal knighthoods are rather handy (at least if you're planning to have dinner with an Archbishop anytime soon), the large section on clerical dress is inaccurate beyond belief, particularly when it is realized that the author had been a seminarian who studied in Rome. Besides a lack of knowledge of pre-Vatican II usages, there is a certain tone of disdain or impatience taken toward them that this reviewer, an experienced Master of Ceremonies at two churches that offer the traditional Latin Mass with full approval from Rome, does not consider to be a very "catholic" attitude in any sense. Much more useful, fully accurate information on Catholic clerical dress, insignia, and ceremonial will be found in the classic and easily-found (though out-of-print) manuals of Nainfa and McCloud, and the rare (but well worth it) "Ius Pontificalium" of Mgr Nabuco. To sum up, this item will be an expensive, pretentious, mostly misinformative waste of money for the average reader who wants to know more about the externals of Catholic worship and protocol.

5 out of 5 stars Window into the world of the Princes of the Catholic Church........2000-07-15

Fascinating work detailing the sometimes bewildering and archaic sights, sounds and ceremonies of the upper echelons of the Roman Church. A "must-read" for Vatican watchers and liturgists. This book describes the proper forms and protocols of upper-Church functions and rites and relates the history and proper usage of the emblems and insignia. This book is decidedly traditional... if you're looking for expressions of post Vatican II liturgical experimentalism, you will not find it here.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at the pomp and protocol of the Vatican.......2000-05-04

"The Church Visible" is not about Catholic theology or doctrine, but it does concern an area of no less fascination and interest: the ceremonial life, protocol, and ritual of the Roman Catholic Church. Although late 20th century Catholics might tend to think of the Church as a purely spiritual entity, for nearly 1500 years it was also a political powerhouse and the source of almost all of the culture and customs of Western Europe. "The Church Visible" examines the present-day incarnation of the Church in her external life: ceremonies, traditions, vestments, insignia, protocol, and temporal and spiritual governance.

The book is divided into five sections: the Vatican itself, papal honors including orders of knighthood, Church protocol, vestments and insignia, and a brief history of the papacy. A glossary, a name and subject index, and a variety of appendices including several Church documents are included. Several impressive Catholic figures also have brief forewords including John Cardinal Krol, John Cardinal O'Connor, and Archbishop John P. Foley.

Noonan has done a wonderful job of answering those niggling questions that never seem to be answered in the standard Catholic Q and A books, such as the reason why cardinals have their title placed in the middle of their name and how exactly a papal election is performed. For the latter, the author leads the reader step by step through the protocol that follows the death of a pope, citing examples from recent history, and then to the election process and then enthronement of a new pope. He even includes sample liturgies and ceremony programs that have been used in the past. The chapter on the College of Cardinals is especially a gem.

Moving on, he examines the different papal honors, who may receive them, how they should be worn, and their relative precedence to other honors. He then studies the two major equestrian orders, the Knights of Malta and the nights of the Holy Sepulcher. For any readers entranced by the idea of knighthood and chivalry from the time they were children, as this reviewer was, these chapters are a joy to read as they reveal that true knighthood, that which begins with Christ, still exists in the world today, and that chivalry does have a place in the 20th century.

The section on protocol is very interesting and especially helpful for Americans who are not used to matters of rank, protocol, and etiquette. Here Noonan even provides sample dinner menus and invitations from past functions. The chapter on forms of address is also a practical guide for anyone who may have an opportunity to write to any clergyman. Overall, this section will be mainly interesting for those who are curious about orders of precedence and etiquette, even if most will never have the chance to be part of formal pomp and circumstance.

The final section that will be of general interest is the coverage of vesture and insignia. Do you know what a zuchetto is? Do you know when it is worn? Now you will know. A nice addition to this section, and the whole book, is a series of color plate pages on heavy stock that illustrate the various vestments, insignia, awards, historical occasions, and other illustrations that bring to life the written descriptions.

Bottom Line: "The Church Visible" is a fun, interesting, and educational experience that any Catholic interested in the temporal life of the Church should pick up and peruse. It is a fascinating introduction to what might otherwise be an intricate web of inscrutable customs, but are now clearly illuminated as the logical product of the Church's long history as the centerpiece of Western civilization.

5 out of 5 stars A real Godsend.......2005-10-02

This manual has everything you will ever need in terms of the written English language. It will answer any punctuation, comprehension, or letter writing question you will ever have, and much much more. I bought the book just to put on a shelf for later reference. In the first two weeks I have already used it four times. This book is a keeper for life.

5 out of 5 stars Teaches Shorthand Like It Says NOT Stenotype Machine .. DOH!.......2005-09-20

I don't understand the person's complaint that it doesn't teach how to use a stenotype machine for a court reporter. It is for teaching shorthand which is still a valuable skill when you need it. Very few companies have stenotype machines or court reporters on staff and yet there are millions of meetings every day.

1 out of 5 stars Old stuff!.......2005-08-26

The book is copyrighted 1955; it talks of using the shorthand system with a steno pad. In the Gregg system, certain symbols are identified by how much of a line they occupy in the stenopad, i.e.: half-line; whole-line, etc. Hardly useful for one about to begin studying to be a court reporter that uses a stenotype machine. There are no lines to use. The book was a huge dissapointment.

5 out of 5 stars Barb's Review.......2005-08-14

I really like this book. It's simple to catch up on what I had in High School. I take lots of notes, now, so wanted to get back into shorthand. I have really enjoyed this book!

4 out of 5 stars Takes me back to high school!.......2005-07-28

I bought this book to see if I could remember any of the shorthand I took in high school in the 1960's. This may even be the same textbook I used back then. I am surprised at how much I remember and what is coming back to me. If you want to unlock the knowledge of Gregg shorthand that may be lurking in your brain from years ago, this is a wonderful tool to use. I would not recommend it to someone who has no knowledge of shorthand. I think it would be way too difficult to truly learn it from this book. But if you once were able to take shorthand, and for whatever reason want or need to do that again, this book will be very helpful to you. I only wish there was some sort of workbook to go along with it. Then I would have given it 5 stars.

Book Description

The strong algorithmic emphasis of Discrete Mathematics is independent of a specific programming language, allowing students to concentrate on foundational problem-solving and analytical skills. Instructors get the topical breadth and organizational flexibility to tailor the course to the level and interests of their students.

Algorithms are presented in English, eliminating the need for knowledge of a particular programming language. Computational and algorithmic exercise sets follow each chapter section and supplementary exercises and computer projects are included in the end-of-chapter material. This Fifth Edition features a new Chapter 3 covering matrix codes, error correcting codes, congruence, Euclidean algorithm and Diophantine equations, and the RSA algorithm.

MARKET: Intended for use in a one-semester introductory course in discrete mathematics.

2 out of 5 stars Review of Discrete Mathematics (4th Edition).......2006-03-21

I used this book for a sophomore level Discrete Math class in the CS program at Park university. It was pretty difficult to understand for everybody in the class including myself and I've had math through Calc III. It was apparently not written for that level student.

3 out of 5 stars No logic, few proofs makes it inappropriate as a textbook.......2004-06-25

If you are looking for a book for a course in discrete mathematics where the emphasis is on graph theory, then this book will probably satisfy your needs. However, for any other type of course, it will most certainly prove to be inadequate. Nearly half the book is devoted to graph theory, and while many theorems are listed, very few are proven. The working computer scientist may find that acceptable, but most mathematicians will find it inadequate. Logic and the basics of proof are relegated to an appendix.
The first chapter covers some combinatorics and the basics of algorithmic analysis, which is meant to be a primer. However, it requires the use of set terminology, set notation and basic counting techniques. Since set theory is covered in chapter 2 and counting techniques in chapter 7, I consider the order to be inappropriate. Recurrence relations, circuits and finite state machines are also covered in other chapters.
There are a large number of exercises and the solutions to the odd numbered ones are included. Sets of problems to be solved by programming a computer are given at the end of each chapter, some of which are easy, but many of which are hard. Only students who have had a programming course could be expected to be able to do any of them without significant help.
This is a book that does not satisfy my requirements for a discrete mathematics textbook. I consider logic to be a critical topic that must be covered, so I will not consider using any book where predicate and propositional logic are not covered in depth. While I do not expect my students to construct rigorous proofs, I do expect them to be able to construct simple proofs and follow some of the relevant more complicated ones.

2 out of 5 stars Inadequate for a textbook.......2004-03-09

While this book by Dossey may serve as a self-teaching book for surveying topics in discrete mathematics, it is not thorough enough even for an introductory course, thus inadequate for a textbook. FYI, I am currently taking a discrete mathematics course using a popular textbook "Discrete mathematics and its applications" by Rosen.

The most basic foundation of discrete mathematics is logic and proof. This part is found in the very first chapter of Rosen book. On the contrary, Dossey book covers that part in the appendix! While one may read the appendix first, doing so is still not helpful because all the proof in this book are not based on the arguments in the appendix. Also, the appendix does not cover quantifier at all. As a result, one cannot build a concrete foundation, and without it, your understanding of discrete mathematics will not go far.

I do not like all aspects of Rosen book (there are some issues, as can be seen from its review), nor I like books with high level of mathematical sophistication, but I am glad that my instructor did not choose this Dossey book as a textbook.

Also, its price is too high for its relatively slim volume.

4 out of 5 stars Good except for its coverage of mathematical induction.......2003-05-25

The discrete math course at our university is a sort of "rite of passage" for math majors- it introduces students to the idea of proofs, as well as basic set and graph theory and combinatorics. It is an introduction to the abstract aspect of mathematics. This book serves this purpose well, with a number of examples and drawings to illustrate concepts. However, this book explained induction in a manner that confused me. Also, our department wasn't too fond of this book- they switched to another after one semester. Still, I don't think it's too bad- unless the current book that the department uses is that much better.

5 out of 5 stars Do Math Books that actually are good exist? Look no further.......2003-03-18

As a student at Illinois state, I'm skeptical about all of the professors abilities... After all, these are the guys that consistently screw up addition in front of class.

After having a chance to complete half of this book in my Discrete Math course (mind you, I'm not a math major) I have definitely gained respect for ISU's math department.

I'm not sure if most authors really teach classes, or if they write books to fulfill their publishing requirements. I can tell you that the authors of Discrete math had the students in mind.

I've found this book to have exceptional examples, and well-explained, READABLE prose.

If you wanted to pick up a copy for self study, this would be a good book.... Yes a professor would be nice, but these guys did a good enough job that the book stands alone.

Made up of 20 very different countries, Latin America has sometimes been treated as though it were a homogeneous unit, one mired in poverty and political instability. University of North Carolina scholar John Charles Chasteen's sweeping history of the region imparts a sense of how diverse--ethnically, linguistically, culturally--Latin America truly is, and of how that part of the world is rapidly changing, mostly for the better. (For example, he writes, "in 1980 most governments of the region were dictatorships of various descriptions. In 2000, elected governments rule almost everywhere.")

Chasteen observes that, although Latin America came into being under the imperial aegis of a few European powers, principally Spain and Portugal, it quickly branched into sometimes conflicting regions with widely differing ideas of economic development and government. He goes on to examine the careers of some of Latin America's most important historical figures, among them Simon Bolivar, who spread a revolutionary gospel of independence throughout the hemisphere, and Lázaro Cárdenas, the Mexican president who, in 1938, nationalized the oil industry and set his nation on a difficult course toward economic self-government. Of particular interest is Chasteen's consideration of the many reasons Latin American governments have clashed with that of the United States--among them disenchantment over the 1947 Marshall Plan, which rebuilt Germany at enormous cost, while offering almost no assistance to needy Latin American allies.

Designed as an undergraduate textbook, Chasteen's survey offers a useful overview of a region that, although of growing importance in world affairs, remains little understood. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Adopted at over 450 colleges and universities in its First Edition, Born in Blood and Fire has quickly become the standard survey history of Latin America. Drawing on the most current scholarship, this concise text presents a direct, compelling narrative that spans six centuries and twenty countries. Carefully revised in light of recent Latin American history, the Second Edition introduces new maps, helpful chapter timelines, and a new Student Web site.

3 out of 5 stars For what it is, it isn't bad.......2007-10-10

I am reading this book for a class on Independence and Nationalism in Latin America and find that it is only appropriate for a very general survey of Latin American history. It is, perhaps, too concise! It is, however, informative and a very simple read. Chasteen wanted to make a history of Latin America readable and approachable and this book is definitely both. I would recommend this text with reservations. It paints a picture that is somewhat biased and full of holes. As an introductory reader, however, it succeeds.

Would have given it a four-star rating, but the edition pictured (2006, second edition) is riddled with typographical errors. The index cites pages that are either blank or diagrams not related to the terms. Not exactly helpful! For example, the entry for Diego Rivera points to page 215, which is BLANK. The other side of the page (216) is in fact a mural by Rivera, but what gives?

4 out of 5 stars History Light.......2007-05-21

You have probably seen movies about Che Guevera or Eva Peron, but do you know in which countries they had influence? You probably know how the Cold War affected U.S. policy in Asia, but do you know how it affected Latin America? You may know about European immigrants living in New York or Chicago, but did you know they flocked to Latin America as well? If the answer to these questions is "no," you need this book. It is a quick, easy read, covering more than 500 years in a little over 300 pages. Of course, details are sparse, but it is an excellent way to gain a basic understanding of our neighbors to the south. I was particularly glad to see segments that told about the lives of particular groups in Latin America since its European conquest to present including minority groups and women. Ever had Moctezuma's revenge? Now you can find out why Moctezuma is so angry!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-09

This is a very good book for Latin American history. Have used it for tests/quizzes and have no gotten uner a B. Provides and takes you through Latin American history.

5 out of 5 stars Concise Book.......2006-03-08

I was assigned to read this book for my class in Latin American Studies. I especially liked the time line the author inserts before chapter 1 and the time lines he inserts for each period. The information in this book is extensive and serves well as a textbook.

2 out of 5 stars Useless and Biased.......2005-12-28

I had to read this book for a course on Latin America. The author is clearly very biased, if you agree with him you will most likely enjoy the book. Chasteen often states his opinions as fact, stating several times that marxism would have been a better option for Latin American countries (how well did this work in the USSR?) Also, he skips over details that don't support his thesis; while he goes in great detail describing the killing and torture commited by government forces, he never acknowledges the torture and murders commited by guerrilla forces.

The book does cover a great deal of history, but the excessive bias takes away from the credibility of the text and the learning experience. I would reccomend finding a book that focuses more on fact than opinion.
