Good book, better than anything on Sage help page.......2007-04-16
This really does answer questions for me, a novice, on how to navigate, and does so as expected in a user friendly format, although I am no dummy (so I hope). It is well laid out, and organized.Like I indicate above in the review title, it exceeds the help from the Sage site itself.

You've heard that performing well on your ACT can make up for mediocre performance in high school. But how can you ace it? Suzee Vlk, author of The SAT I for Dummies, can help. The ACT for Dummies is packed with useful information and strategies to help you prepare for the test. The book includes advice on how to use the book efficiently (Vlk estimates you'll need 19 hours to work through it), review chapters for all four sections of the exam, and two complete practice exams. In familiar Dummies style, Vlk includes a handy tear-out "Cheat Sheet" with a summary of the most important information and a "Part of Tens" section with 10 things colleges are looking for in their applicants and "Ten Dumb Things You Can Do to Mess Up Your ACT." With its witty writing, clear layout, and helpful icons in the margins to point out tips, tricks, and traps in the exam, and sample questions, The ACT for Dummies makes test preparation easy and relatively painless. --C.B. Delaney

Customer Reviews:
ACT for Dummies.......2007-06-11
This book was very informative and easy to understand.
I liked that it gave a practice ACT test.
Awesome reviews on things you'd forgotten along with great tips.......2006-07-21
I bought this book along with The Real ACT Prep Guide and have found this book to be much more useful. I already understood the basics of the test, but I was looking for something to refresh me on all those little rules I'd forgotten in school. This book did just that. It is a great reviewer, especially in the English and Math sections.
I found this book very easy to follow along with. It is divided into sections for each subject test. In each section you will find basic rules and simple explanations for things that are commonly on the test. The math portion really brushed me up on things I'd forgotten in geometry and algebra. Even if you're having trouble understanding you math teacher, this book will teach you what you need to know very easily. With each new thing you learn in the book, it gives you a sample question that uses your new information. Then you get questions at the end of each section that test what you've learned.
I also found the tips to be very helpful, such as one that said the ACT never asked any questions about spelling. It's helpful to know that when you're taking the test, and it was one less thing I worried about on the English test.
The practice test in this book wasn't as close to the real test as it could have been. A few of the questions were a lot easier or harder than you'd find on the real test, but overall they were close to the real thing. I suggest picking up a practice test with your registration packet for a more realistic test.
In conclusion, this book is great if you want to brush up on your skills over a period of time, or if you want to cram the night before the test. I found it very helpful and littered with great test taking tips.
I know this isn't an accurate measurement, but after reading about half the book (and having an additional year of school), my score went from a 22 to a 26, and then to a 29. Some of that has to be due to this book.
It got me into college.......2003-05-15
The ACT for Dummies is a great ACT study guide. The Math section totally refreshed me and was very valuable when it came to test time. But what really made the ACT for Dummies book so good was that it was full of really cheesy humor. This humor helped keep me reading a book that would otherwise be extremely dull and positively unbearable. I wouldn't be at the University of Michigan without the ACT for Dummies!
Hey also check out The 5 Minute Iliad, after finishing the ACT book
Errors.......2003-02-05
It's fun to read and it's a good prep. Unfortunately, the practice tests contain several errors. So far, I have only taken the english and the math sections of the first test, and I have found three errors. (And this is only on the first two of eight practice sections!) I have the 3rd Edition and these problems might be different in other editions. Feel free to dispute me.
(Asterisks represent underlined portion in question.)
English, problem 19, test 1:
Born in 1921 in Ithaca, New York, Alex spent his early years with his grandmother in henning, *Tennessee*. The oldest of three sons in his family.
19. A. NO CHANGE
B. Tennessee - the oldest of
C. Tennessee because he was the oldest of
D. Tennessee. Alex was the oldest of
The explanation gives D as the correct answer. They must have forgotten to underline "The oldest of" in the sentence following Tennessee.
Math, problem 18, test 1:
18. Triangles I and II (not shown) are similar figures. The
angles of triangle I are in the ratio 1:2:3. If the
perimeter of triangle I is 15+5(SQRT)3, and the shortest side
of triangle II is 15, then what is the perimeter of triangle
II?
F. 150+20(SQRT)3
G. 60+15(SQRT)3
H. 60+5(SQRT)3
J. 45+5(SQRT)3
K. 45
After working the problem, I got the answer 45+15(SQRT)3. The explanation gives the same, but it's not an answer choice!
Math, problem 28, test 1:
28. Given that x is an integer, for what value of x is x+(2/3)x
and x+4
<15?
F. 8
G. 9
H. 10
J. 11
K. 12
I took this to mean, "For what value of x are both x+(2/3)x AND x+4 less than 15?" I thought that was a strange was of phrasing it and the explanation implies that the question should have asked, "For what value of x is x+(2/3)x>15 and x+4
<15?" It gave the answer H. It seems they left off the second half of the first inequality.
Sorry if this sounds like bashing, but these flaws really threw me off during my practice test. It entered my mind that the test could be wrong, but I did not think that assuming that the ACT people made a mistake was the smartest thing to do.
Also, I am under the impression that the practice tests in this book are not real ACT tests, meaning that they were made up for this book - not priorly administered tests.
extremely helpful.......2001-08-08
I bought this book with the intention of just reading the sections I had trouble with. I found it to be so helpful and easy to read, I ended up reading the entire book. I don't beleive I would have scored as high if I hadn't.

Customer Reviews:
Honest help for Act 6.......2007-01-12
This is a great reference with a lot of useful tips. It's not afriad to point out some of Act's shortcomings. This is really useful when you're trying to do something that should be easy and obvious (like look up some sales/opportunities and then run a report based on your look-up) and you can't figure out how to do it. The ACT manual is no help because it can't be done, so of course they don't have any instructions on how to do it.
Act for Dummies is honest about what Act can and cannot do and offers great work arounds, tips and shortcuts. The author's website is also a lot of help.
No information on synchronizing.......2005-06-02
While this book does explain how to manage contacts, there is absolutely no information on the most difficult part of Act!: How to synchronize. Do not buy this book if you are looking how share databases with other users. Although there is a chapter titled, "Sharing information with others", there is no mention of how to synchronize!
Act! is a program that is as good as you want it to be:.......2004-12-30
I've used Act! 6 as long as it has been out. Prior to that, I struggled through buggy earlier versions, going back ten years or so, or however long they've been out. For my use, contact management, I've looked at other programs and have not seen any program any better than Act!, but then again, I'm used to this program. If I had to do it all over again, I would still go with Act!, but I would read this Act! for Dummies book from cover to cover. For the first few years I only learned what I felt I had to learn. And, because of that my knowledge base was limited, which resulted in Act! having a limited value to me. I can tell you that most the people in our company that use Act! don't use it like they should. They don't recognize the program's power to make them more efficient and organized. Most people will continue to use their old methods of organization, i.e., hand written Day Timer methods, etc., will never actually use the appointment scheduling features, and then tell people that Act! simply isn't helping them much. Little do they know that Act! is the most powerful organizational program that they can buy, from my view, and all they need to do is learn it and use it. It took me time, but now I have six sales people under me, who travel. They all synchronize daily, so that I can schedule things for them to do, or they can flag notes for me to read, and we're always on top of our priorities. They can be in a motel in Lansing Michigan, and me in my office in Reno, Nevada, and we're all over our responsibilities as if we're in the same office. If something important slips through the crack, it's because someone isn't using their Act! program, or they aren't using it correctly. This program is like an incredibly powerful tool if put into the hands of someone who wants to succeed, while if put in the wrong hands it will not be used, it will be useless. The learning curve can take a very long time, as it did with me, simply because I didn't want to learn any more than I had to learn, to deal with my immediate needs. The power in this program can not be unleashed unless you do more than what I did, and take the time to learn it, and make sure you work it. Some of my sales people don't even open the program in the morning for hours. How can this program help these people? But, little by little, as they see how great this program can be, they are coming around. I recommend contacting an Act! consultant, and pay them a kings ransom if necessary, but learn this program faster than your competition can, simply by reading this book from cover to cover TWICE if you have to. And, every time you need to learn more, don't put it off, learn it now. Time is too valuable not to put this program to work for you. You can manager yourself, a crew of people, while also managing a powerful mass mail (or email) marketing program with this program if you are smart enough to learn this program as fast as you can. There is simply no other program with this kind of power that I've ever seen. I'm sold on this program again and again, as I find ways to take advantage of its horsepower. Managing a database of contacts couldn't be done at this level without Act! But, I don't give it five stars yet, until Act! decides to put on more traveling seminars, so I can send our sales people to them in our own town at least once a year. Act!, get working on that, will you? Then again, don't let my competition learn to use Act! In that respect, it's a secret weapon.
CUT TO THE CHASE AND BUY THIS BOOK.......2004-02-26
ACT6! for Dummies is not only extremely informative, it is fun and easy to read. It is a great starting place to learn the many aspects of the program and it is a great reference once you are using the program regularly. If you can figure out how to use this program to its fullest by using the book supplied by ACT, you are probably not in sales, you have a lot of extra time on your hands, and you love to watch paint dry. Unless you are selling real estate in South Florida and one of my competitors, buy ACT6! for Dummies and get yourself on track fast.
Take me by the hand and show me everything.......2004-02-22
I'm not a computer buff so I bought this book and was gratefully taken through an overview of the basics of Act! 6 and then the details. It not only showed how to use Act! 6, but also how to maximize the use of Act! 6.
The important thing about the book is that it is written for the reader (not in tech-speak), with a wonderful sense of humor. In fact, it's as if the author is right there with you as you go through and learn/use the program. After having used Act! 6 for a while, if I have more sophisticated needs, I look them up in the book and have the answer quickly and painlessly.
I hesitated buying Act! 6 for a while, but once I bought the program, I also bought this book. Now I am a confident and effective user.

Acts 2005 dummies.......2006-02-24
Book is easy to follow, very helpful to a beginner. It would probably be helpful to an experienced user but I am so new to this that I have not even looked into advanced features. I highly recommend this book.
Review from the Author.......2004-10-23
Don't be fooled by the "Dummies" title - Wiley Publishing has a very successful formula that they've developed for this series. As much as I'd like to think that you're going to read this book from cover to cover, alas, it's meant to be a reference book that you can pick up and instantly find the answer to your most pressing questions. I've covered the most commonly used of the ACT! features and included many of the "gotchas" that I've encountered over my many years of ACT! consulting. I've given you easy, step by step instructions that don't require you to work with "pretend" contacts. Most importantly, I've tried to infuse the book with a sense of humor because to me learning a software program should be fun and non-threatening.

A friend of salespeople and customer service representatives everywhere, ACT! 2000 does a great job of managing lots of names and their associated bits of contact information. ACT! 2000 for Windows for Dummies realizes that most people don't want to spend their days running ACT!--they just want to know that Ruth Ann Krinklemeyer needs a follow-up call (at this number right here) on the 23rd. Because of this, the book jumps right to the simplest ways of getting contact information into an ACT! database and then getting it back out on demand. Later chapters deal with advanced database queries and Internet integration, but author Jeffrey J. Mayer has organized the first part of this book with the knowledge that most readers will spend a lot of time there.
ACT! 2000 for Windows for Dummies employs the vintage Dummies writing and organizational style, complete with explicit how-to procedures and more than a few dopey jokes. You probably know from other books whether you like the approach. Generally, it works well as straight documentation of the program's features (especially the relatively basic ones) and holds up reasonably well when you want to do something that falls outside the realm of the normal. This book gives you the grounding you need to get practically all ACT! 2000 jobs done. Ms. Krinklemeyer will get her call. --David Wall
Topics covered: Entering contacts; extracting information; defining custom fields; using list views; performing advanced queries; using the calendar and task list features; and using ACT! as an e-mail, fax, and letter-writing platform.
Book Description
For years, we’ve all been keeping track of our activities by using some version of a to-do list. Some people write down all of their tasks on pads of paper and update the list every few days; others use daily planning books; and still others write everything on self-stick notes and paste them to the desktop, wall, and computer monitor.
With ACT!, you don’t make lists. You schedule a specific task and include the task’s date, time, and regarding information, and then you assign the task to a specific person. ACT! 2000 a must for every user........2001-12-10
ACT! 2000 the software is an excellent product and I use it 2 or three times a day. ACT! 2000 for Dummies is extremely helpful and very entertaining. I learned alot from ACT! for Dummies. The first version of ACT! for Dummies was well written and ACT! 2000 for Dummies is even better. I bought it three or four years ago when I upgraded my software to ACT! 2000 and I still keep it handy and refer to it for all my ACT questions and how too's. I have also told everyone who uses ACT! 2000 to buy their own copy and keep it close by. TG
ACT! 2000 For Windows For Dummies vs. Act! 2000 User's Guide.......2000-12-15
I found this manual no more helpful than the User's Guide provided with ACT! 2000. In my opinion, this "Dummies" book is written on the same level as the User's Guide, and really does not speak to the "dummy" or new user any more clearly or understandably than the ACT! 2000 User's Guide does. In fact, I found Mr. Mayer's book confusing at times and would turn to the User's Guide for clarification. I wish I had read some of the Amazon reviews before purchasing Mr. Mayer's book. Had I known what I know now, I would not have purchased ACT! 2000 For Windows For Dummies but would have saved myself time, study, and money by simply using the ACT! 2000 User's Guide.
Good for beginners.......2000-05-16
This book covers a large amount of information very quickly. As a more advanced user of ACT!, I found most of the topics too superficial. However, my users frequently find the book very helpful in assisting them with basic tasks in ACT!. I found the constant references to the author's classes and other books somewhat annoying after the first several.
An abberation in the Dummies series.......2000-05-11
I have great affection for the unfortunately-titled Dummies series. Typically they combine a very digestible series of easily read lessons, which teach rather more than the title suggests. And if I find the writing style cloying, with the mandatory joke per page, I at least give them credit for trying to ease the worried reader's misgivings.
ACT is notorious in clerical office worker circles as being a daunting bear to learn really well. The instruction manuals make one think that one could spend the same amount of time learning C++ or rocket science. Typically that's when someone like me turns to a Dummies book.
I cannot fault the book for the very complete information it provides. It does it as well, or better, than any other complete manual I've seen. What disappoints is the fact that the information here makes the subject no less daunting than any of the other complete manuals.
It becomes almost sad when the reader realizes by the middle of the second chapter, that the writer is uniquely colorless and lacking any inate sense of humor -- and his attempts at it strike one as pathetic. The easy digestibility one expects from a Dummies book is completely absent. I still felt like I'd make a better living if I spent the time learning rocket science. The Dummies books on Excel, or A+ Certification -- not lightweight subjects -- make ACT appear like the height of esoteric knowledge by comparison.
This is a very fine manual, and I learned alot from it. ...
ACT!2000 Training.......2000-05-08
ACT!2000 for Windows for Dummies was the basis of lesson plans I developed for beginning, intermediate, and advanced ACT!2000 classes. Jeff has a knack for uncomplicating a feature-rich piece of software. He literally hand carries users through the program and enables them to take advantage of the best Personal Information Manager on the market.

great instructional/reference book.......2002-06-02
One of the few books ever published on the subject. This book features over 100 pages of detailed (yet easy to follow) text, illustrations, photos and diagrams on the art/craft of ventriloquism. Great for beginners (of any age) and for those who already some intermediate skills in the craft.
Average customer rating:
- Mostly helpful, often repetitve, sometimes vague
- A terrible book, strangely unhelpful and oddly organized.
- Excellent book, well research
- An excellent resource for the ACT! user community

Customer Reviews:
Mostly helpful, often repetitve, sometimes vague.......1998-12-03
While the book is definitely helpful in learning ACT, it sometimes vaguely introduces topics and fails to adequately explain them. It also often discusses the same topic in 3 or 4 different chapters.
A terrible book, strangely unhelpful and oddly organized........1998-11-23
As long time computer user with extensive experience with dBase, I was chagrined and frustrated with my attempts to learn Act!4 quickly with the help of this book. The author seemed to persistently overstate and elaborate on the obvious, while offering minimum assistance in the more opaque areas. Invariably, what I most wanted to know as a new user was either unavailble or relegated to a chapter nearer the book's index than its beginning. The author, annoyingly, saw fit to repeatedly suggest securing professional help in various areas...and even (and I suspect, self-servingly) cited names of pros who the reader could hire. As a teaching tool, this book is a total bust..unless I'm just not enough of a "dummy" to appreciate it. It's my first and certainly last book of the Dummy series.
Excellent book, well research.......1998-08-24
Jeffrey Mayer has collected the tips of some of the best minds in the ACT! world and compiled tips, tricks and suggestions in this volume.
In addition, real world examples of time management and sales techniques using ACT! are clearly stated.
An excellent resource for the ACT! user community.......1998-08-24
ACT! for Dummies is a resource where just one or two tips in this book can help you increase your productivity. Jeffrey Mayer has provided a resource on how to really customize ACT! for your business and help you make more money.
This book is unlike most computer books in that it incorporates many tips on time management and productivity. An example is "Using a telephone headset to improve productivity".
By the end of the book, you will have mastered design, advanced lookups, template creation, scheduling, report generation and using ACT! with the internet. I highly recommend this book.
The best part is that it is easy to understand and has tips for users at all levels.
This review was written by Andrew Kaplan, ACT! Certified Consultant who has trained thousands of ACT! users nationwide.
