Book Description
It’s a hot, hot summer, and in the depths of the Toronto Transit Authority’s Lost and Found, 17-year-old Duncan is cataloging lost things and sifting through accumulated junk. And between Jacob, the cranky old man who runs the place, and the endless dusty boxes overflowing with stuff no one will ever claim, Duncan’s just about had enough. Then he finds a little leather book. It’s a diary filled with the dark and dirty secrets of a twisted mind, a serial killer stalking his prey in the subway. And Duncan can’t make himself stop reading.
What would you do with a book like that? How far would you go to catch a madman?
And what if time was running out. . . .
From the Hardcover edition.

Acceleration.......2007-05-10
Acceleration was written by Graham McNamee it is a mystery book. It is about a few boys that have a summer job working in the lost and found of a subway. They find many interesting things while working there. The most exotic thing they found was a little black book that was written by a anonymous man who is a serial killer and writes a dairy of dark and dirty secrets about crazy ideas. The boys are very scared and dont know what to do about it.I really liked this book! It kept me on my toes wondering what was going to happen next.I would recomend this book to older teenagers because it can be confusing to follow.
reluctant reader teacher.......2007-03-08
As a high school teacher of a class full of reading haters, I highly recommend this book. My students were sad when it was over, they couldn't wait to get to class to read this suspenseful thriller.
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-03-03
Duncan is having a very boring summer, working at his mind-numbing job at the Toronto Transit Authority's lost and found. He sorts through old junk no one wants anymore and boxes up all of the "expired" items to be donated.
One very ordinary day he was looking for a book to read when he comes across a brown leather bound journal. He begins reading it and soon figures out that the person who is writing this is seriously deranged! It's like this journal is the book of weird and twisted science experiments this person has been conducting. There are even women in the book that he follows that he plans on killing.
Duncan, along with his two best friends, take it upon themselves to find out who this freak is!
I really liked this book. The story is very addictive; I couldn't put it down!

Acceleration book review
Have you ever been inside the head of a serial killer? The first person perspective you get of "Roach", the would-be serial killer, through his misplaced diary, makes you want to jump into the book and protect his targets. In this single-book thriller, the protagonist, Duncan, is a teenager growing up in the projects or, the "Jungle", of Toronto. With his longtime friends, Vinnie, the slacker know-it-all who happens to have a deformed hand, and Wayne, the small time criminal who works at dairy barn, Duncan has settled in for an average summer of minimum wage and messing around. He knows that's not all he is in for when he discovers a diary in the Toronto transit lost and found where he works. This diary is not just the fretting of some teenage girl, it's the cold, deadly calculations and plans of an accomplished arsonist who is also stalking 3 complete strangers. After attempting to turn the diary into the cops, who seem to him to be blind to the threat Duncan decides to enlist his childhood friends to track down the psycho before he hurts anyone, using the insight into Roach's twisted mind that he gains from the diary, he tracks him down and trys and turn the tables on the evil diarist.
The information about psychopaths in this well-researched book seems credible. Graham McNamee's extensive knowledge of his subject helped create believable characters. While I was reading this book I was aware of being creeped and wanting not to believe that there are actually people who love the feeling of power they get from killing animals, committing arson or stalking human beings. If you liked The Body of Christopher Creed, Acceleration might be a good choice. They are both dark, angled towards sending shivers down your spine. What makes Acceleration able to hold your interest, even while being disturbing, is that the characters are average people you can relate to. Duncan forgets to call his parents, eats fast food, wonders what is in it and sleeps till 11 at least. But the problem that Duncan, Wayne and Vinnie face; tracking down one deformed mind in a city of a few million people, is not something I ever expect or want to face. I think it was a great choice to use the first person because you feel the mounting pressure to do something and understand Duncan's panic as he thinks time is running out. In the book Duncan would ride the subway next to the first target of "Roach", and then go swimming or go to Dairy Queen. The contrast in the pacing and subject matter contributed to the everyday/surreal theme of the book. The author, Graham McNamee, also used a lot of flashbacks in this book. The flashbacks brought unexpected elements to the story and made the plot a lot more interesting. The most effective of which was a reoccurring one about the past summer when he was the last to see a girl before she drowned. In Duncan's words "I was the one who didn't save her." I think that if you like thrillers or mysteries at all, you should read this book. It is one of the best books about an average teenager who becomes a hero I have ever read best of all it comes without a corny moral.
omg just wait till the end!!!.......2006-07-08
i seriously could not put that book down!!! especially when it got near the end. suspensfull...
the mice thing was a little... disturbing but I'm a girl so maybe thats why?

Whispered Wisdom is a collection of profound spiritual thoughts masquerading as a travelouge through the Rocky Mountains. The spiritually based poetry and prose contained in Whispered Wisdom will provide countless hours of nourishment for the soul. It makes a wonderful jumping point for daily contemplation. This would be a wonderful gift for anyone on your list.
Book Description
In 1993, three young boys were murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas. In what was widely considered a witch hunt, three older boys were convicted of the killings. Ten years later, Henry Rollins used his considerable cultural chops to raise money for their defense fund and for DNA testing, which could help clear them. His vehicle? The acclaimed CD “Rise Above” and a world tour. Broken Summers details the rehearsing of Black Flag songs he hadn’t played in years, dealing with an arrogant manager or two, a diverse group of musicians, recording the CD, and the arduous trek from Tucson to Tokyo that included grilling by heartland shock jocks unsympathetic to his cause. The book covers 14 months of desperate lows and dramatic highs, all rendered in Rollins’s trademark combative style. Included are black-and-white photos of the rehearsals, recording sessions, and tour.
Customer Reviews:
Fans of Henry # 1, Look Here!.......2007-03-29
The title of this review refers to a review I wrote of Rollins' "Unwelcomed Songs". This book, "Broken Summers", showcases Henry #1: funny, articulate and insightful. The man truly gives readers a window not only into his life, but into his mind. Books like this are why journaling is often called an art form.
The only thing that doesn't work here? The added-on Thomas Wolfe tribute chapter, "Nights Below the Treeline". It comes at the end of the book; it's all right for what it is---evidence of Rollins' continued growth as a writer---but it doesn't really fit with the rest of manuscript. But that's a minor concern.
This is a fine work by a talented author. If this is the first Henry Rollins book you've ever read, you're in for quite a treat.
The grit dirt and feel of the road.......2005-05-10
Henry Rollins is not your drugged out space case of a musician. Join him as he writes in breathtaking painful clarity about his neurosis, his thoughts and life on the road. Amped only by an abundance of caffiene, it's an intense ride of focused agression, anger and anguish.
If you're a fan if it's a must read. If not - it might open your eyes to someone old school that manages to be brave and new.
Another Interesting Book By Henry Rollins.......2004-05-05
This book is by far Rollins' most mature writing. Like other books by Rollins Broken Summers has a journal format which creates a sort of intimacy with the reader. It is interesting to read the ideas, rants and daily goings on of a person as well known as Henry Rollins.
Make sure to pick up Rise Above - Album To Benefit the West Memphis Three as well. That is after all the whole reason this book came to be at all.
Not the average Rollins.......2004-05-01
This book is great companion piece to both the Rise Above CD and Henry's current speaking tour. Although the book is slow going at times with workout schedules and menu plans it gives a great insight to touring, band realtions and the politics of making a benefit CD.
You feel for Henry throughout the book that his good intentions are disrupted by other people's agendas and politics and you find yourself hoping he sells 10 million copies of the CD, despite how you may feel about the West Memphis Three.
Don't bother with this book if you're easily offended by truth. Henry frequently challenges the actions of the US government but it's rather him thinking aloud then going on a full on rant. Give it a try. It'll make you think.
henry can do no wrong.......2004-04-16
Henry Rollins can not write a bad book, i've read every single book he has written and they are all good. He writes how he feels and sometimes it makes you feel better. His situations are outragious and lately his books have had alittle Rollins humor he's the man and you should buy this book, and every other book that was writen by Henry Rollins.

Mantle - The Definitive Story of Mickey Mantle
ASIN: 0440212030
Release Date: 1992-03-02 |
Book Description
Mickey Mantle, the hayseed kid from Spavinaw, Oklahoma, was in his sixth year with the Yankees. He was already America's homerun king. He was about to become a national hero. 1956 would be a record-breaking season: the golden summer fans would remember forever. Now Mickey Mantle brings it all back just the way it happened--spectacular playing on field, crazy hijinks with Whitey Ford and Billy Martin off. There never was a time like it before in baseball. There never will be again. It was magic.
Customer Reviews:
hanging out with mick.......2003-07-15
I enjoyed this causually written account of Mickey Mantles' summer of 1956. It's like sitting on the front porch with Mick as he tells you the events and feelings of what he and the yankees experinced that year,on and off the field.and he spares you his war stories by leaving it at "we went out and partied that night". He talks about his triple crown, his homerun race agianst Babe Ruth(also in the back is a season schedule of dates,hr's,pitchers faced, site, opponents, and runners on base).Mick also discusses the 1956 world series agianst the dodgers and descibes the perfect game by don larsen. Also there are game and team photos. i think you will enjoy micks account of his favorite year.
Best Book I ever read, and I am not even a Yankees fan!.......2003-02-12
When I read this book I could not put it down. The detail of the 1956 season that Mickey goes into is unmatched because the words come right from the source, MICKEY! I think you must be a baseball fan to enjoy this book, but you definitely don't have to be a Yankee fan. I strongly dislike Steinbrenner's Yankees, but this is before he ruined the organization. Who doesn't have a small spot in their heart for the oldtime Yanks? This book tells you about the relationships between Mickey and Billy Martin as well as Whitey Ford, straight from Mickey's mouth!! Mickey hired the great Phil Pepe to help edit his book, and Pepe's editing always makes the reading just keep flowing. Outstanding read, and I recommend it to any baseball fan!
My favorite book 2000.......2001-01-08
This book is one of the best books I have ever read. Not necessarily the best book ever written, but the best book I have ever read. It is my favorite book because it is about my favorite subject, baseball and of course the New York Yankees. Someone who does not like baseball or the New York Yankees as much as me would probably not like the book as much as me. But for a real baseball fan, it is a must read. The `50s were a great time for baseball, and the Yankees, and this book documents one of those spectacular seasons. To keep interested in this book, you must be a baseball fan, and at least like the Yankees in order for the book to be a good read. I say this because the Yankees are so good, that a lot of people despise them because they are so outrageously good. Either way I loved the book, it informed me on a time of baseball when I was not around to witness it, and now after reading the book, I feel I lived it. I felt like I was there, I watched Mickey win the Triple Crown, I watched the Yankees win the World Series. I was there. This was a great book, and I would recommend it to anyone with a heart of baseball, such as I do.
Book Description
When twenty-five-year-old Laura Smart moves from Cleveland to Manhattan to take a job at a magazine, she hopes the world will become her oyster-her Fendi Oyster (this year's must-have handbag) to be exact.
Instead, Laura has to deal with the demands of her self-absorbed and quirky boss-the talk-show host turned magazine editor, Cassandra Lovelace. Laura, a Holly Golightly-type character, finds her own romantic and professional redemption in a novel that hilariously sends up the sex-and-celebrity-obsessed world of contemporary women's magazines.
Written from the insider's perspective of a former senior editor of Glamour, Manhattan on the Rocks is a sharply observed comedy of manners with a take-no-prisoners spirit. This is a novel for every woman who has ever known in her heart that-even as her world is collapsing all around her-she needs only a Glamour makeover to save her life from ruin.
Customer Reviews:
Typical, but cute chick lit.......2007-01-07
I thought this was a really cute, light and fluffy read!!!! Typical chick lit, but a fun read!!!!
I liked the main character alot and was interested to see what happened to her over the course of the book!!!
Not the best I've read, but by far, not the worst!!!
'Manhattan' does NOT rock.......2005-08-09
This book had all the potential to develop more in terms of its storyline, but strangely, towards the end of the novel, I found myself not caring what happened to the protagonist, and not at all involved in any or all of her activities and pursuits.
The plot is hackneyed and contrived at best, in addition to being overwhelmingly cliched. Reading the novel was seriously and literally painful because of the abundance of typing, spelling and editorial errors; mistakes occur on nearly every page, if not every other page! One wonders how an award winning journalist could let slip all the errors and omissions that would have been picked up with more careful editing and proofreading. Surely, editorial staff have much to answer for too!
I'm not sure if this book should be allowed to remain on the shelves of any bookstore, let alone still continue to be sold at all. I would seriously recommend a total recall of all copies of this book from bookstores, followed by a thorough editing process before unleashing it onto an unsuspecting public. This is an outrageus assault on the reading standards and literacy expectations of literate people!

quite a view..........2005-12-04
I read "Soul Sounds" cover to cover in the course of a week and I can honestly say that at times I cried, I laughed, I smiled, I got angry. This book is about Mary's personal journey through life to the end of 1991 and it was amazing that she shared something so personal with the world. It gave me a new understanding into this phenomenal woman - so for that I say thank you Mary Summer Rain for sharing that part of your journey with us. If you like to read biographies or personal journeys through life...then pick up a copy of "Soul Sounds" you wont be disappointed and you just might learn something new.
Absolutely five stars.
About The Book and Author.......2005-02-04
Mary Summer Rain never wanted Soul Sounds published. But her advisors did. It's a very personal, very private journal that puts her experiences with No-Eyes in an entirely different light and allows the reader to enter the guarded realm of her family life, her background, and even her extraordinary experiences with the Starborn.
"In the spring of 1991 I thought it might be wise to write down the events of my life. I wanted to have a personal record to review when I became very old and too forgetful of mind to remember. This was to be the recording of my private soul sounds that nobody else would ever hear. But it was not to be. I've been advised, by reasons spoken and unspoken, to have this very private diary published. This idea was not sanctioned by me until the very last possible moment because I'd thought no one else was going to be reading my words, and I'd written as honestly and outspokenly as I could throughout the journal pages. I'd recorded my personal thoughts, memories and even confessions. In essence, this journal does indeed turn me inside out in respect to revealing my true thoughts and inner self to the public. But, as always, I abide by how I am guided; whether I will end up being chastised, ridiculed, embarrassed or exposed because of the publication of this book is not important anymore. So then, dear friends, I give you my total inner being. I now bring my private soul sounds to your ears, I give you..." - Mary Summer Rain
Mary opens herslf to us...............2001-04-13
In this book she shares her day by day triumphs, sorrows. She speaks of special starborn interaction. The book starts with Mary's memmory prior to incarnating into the physical. Then she reflects upon early childhood, adolecenc, and her married life with children. She brings you up to date.....and then goes by a day to day basis life "as Summer Rain knows it".I can only speak for myself here, but I cried ,laughed,empathised,sympathised,ect..I truly honor her for opening herself up to the general public. That took guts.I highly recomend any of Mary's books. This one was wonderful.Just like her!!!!!!
spirit song.......1999-12-30
very good book looking forward to reading more of her book
A real gift of love.......1999-06-25
The openness with wich Mary Summer Rain shares her life with the reader is extremely touching. She understands to remind us in a simple yet powerful way, where the real values lie. I love her clear and honest style. Thank you for all your wonderful books.

Book Description
It's sizzling summertime, and Edie can't wait for the partying to start. Trying to forget about the dastardly Dylan, Edie's taking her new squeeze Carter to the Glastonbury music festival to have some fun. But guess who's there already, looking totally gorgeous? That's right . . .
Customer Reviews:
Good!.......2007-03-07
It is the continuing story of Dylan and Edde. They are constantly fighting and then making up. I am glad with what happens in the end. I am excited for this story to continue.
Loved it.......2006-07-27
I've read all 3 books in the Diary of a Crush series. With number 1 & 3 being my favorite ones. This is the second one and I still love it even though it's my least favorite in the series. (WARNING: Don't read this part if you haven't read the first book in the series: French Kiss)
Even though everything seems ok at the end of the 1st book, things don't stay that way. Edie and Dylan are having major relationship problems and then it comes down to the point where something major happens and Dylan & Edie break up.
But that is just only the beginning. Later, when she returns from a summer apart from Dylan, she finds out that everything had changed. Dylan is now dating the queen of evil Veronique, Shona gets closer to Veronique and stops hanging out w/ Edie, and Edie is trying to get through life. Even though Dylan is with someone else, he still wants Edie as a friend and Edie accepts but of course it can't be that easy! More conflict occurs.
I'm not giving the whole thing away so go read it!! I have to admit that I really did like this one but it's just not as strong as the 1 & 2 of the DOAC series.
Read this book in a day, thats how good it is!.......2006-06-23
After reading the first book (French Kiss) I ran right out and bought this book. I read this whole book in one day because I couldn't put it down. The romance of Edie and Dylan just sucks you in and you have to know which direction they are going to go in next.

Customer Reviews:
Are you ready to go Dutch?.......2005-06-03
Are you ready to go to the Netherlands where bicycal riding, canal site seeing, and tulips are done almost all year long? Do you want to know the real story? Know what's happening with Cicily's family. Join me into a world where the Netherlands are the best place to be!
Melanie Gets Better and Better.......2005-03-15
The sequel to The Diary of Melanie Martin is just as charming and rings with the same truthful voice, as Melanie records the ups and downs of a vacation in Holland with her family and best friend. Melanie is reading the Diary of Anne Frank on this trip, and this historic diary lends a thoughtful note to Melanie's own diary, which includes dealing with the threat of the cancer which has infected her best friend's mom. With the heroine's observations as witty as ever, Melanie Martin Goes Dutch will delight young readers as they experience both van Gogh paintings and topless beaches through Melanie's eyes.
Melanie Martin Goes Dutch: A real "that's just like..." book.......2004-09-14
When you open this book, you will find yourself peeking into the private diary of Melanie Martin, a ten year old girl living in New York with her mom, dad and Matt the Bratt (aka little brother!). Her mom is an art teacher who teaches her kids to appreciate art, and she loves when they do, even if its only because it includes naked people or blood scenes!
The story starts when summer vacation has just got out, and our girl Mel is getting bored. She and her mom do puzzles. It is one utterly boring day when Melanie's mom gets a phone call telling her that she's got the grant (for her teaching) and they're going to Amster Amster Dam Dam Dam!
They barely get this news before it is discovered that Cecily's mom (Cecily is Melanie's best friend) has got breast cancer.
Mel's mom invites Cecily on the trip and Melanie is overjoyed!
They all leave together for Amsterdam. They all expirience lots of adventures including lost luggage, a topless beach, LOTS of museums and a HUGE argument.
Mel thinks Cecily is getting way too much attention so they silently fight.
Will the fight turn this best-friend bliss into a bummer summer?
Read and find out!
Melanie Martin Goes Dutch is a great book that plenty of kids can empathize with - even grown-ups too!
I hope everyone will enjoy this book as much as I have, including Carol Weston's other fantastic books!
3 cheers, two thumbs up, plus five WHOLE stars as well!
My summer vacation with a Dutch Touch.......2004-06-27
Wishing you could take a trip this summer? The title of this book just makes me smile. Melanie's mother has a grant to study Van Gogh in Amsterdam for the summer and the whole family gets to go along. Melanie's diary of their trip is a fun read. Travel disasters such as lost luggage, an annoying little brother, and a fight with her best friend are not what she imagined her vacation would be like. Melanie is reading Anne Frank: the diary of a young girl. As events unfold on their trip Melanie finds herself empathizing with Anne. Her visit to the Secret Annex is very poignant.
I loved "hearing" the Dutch phrases (complete with pronunciation,)smelling the food and seeing the sights through the eyes of a character who is the same age I was when I lived there. This is a very funny book. The presence of Anne in the background of the story gives the story a sweetness beyond the humor.
Melanie Martin is the Best!.......2004-02-21
This is the best book ever! It taught me a lot about Holland, and I learned a LOT of dutch. Now I can speak a little of a different language!
Book Description

Based on solid science. Grades 3-up.

Experience the season!.......2001-01-15
I own three of the four books in this series and have found all of them to be full of useful information. I use them with my second grade daughter as well as with my preschool class of three and four year old children. The artwork by Margaret Brandt is accurate and detailed. The factual information is presented simply yet thoroughly. Throughout the book the author, Toni Albert, shares some of her personal journal and encourages the reader to do the same. No project requires unusual materials, everything can be found or easily obtained at little or no cost. I will be buying the final book in this series soon.
