Customer Reviews:
nobody noticed.......2007-08-14
i'm surprised nobody noticed that if luke did miss wouldnt the death star have blown up the planet since that was what it was about to do before it was blown up.so if luke had missed, the death star would have blown up the planet yavin with leia on it and han and luke surely would have been killed by the imperial fleet with nowhere to run.so this story what if couldnt really happen cause there is too many holes.mainly the big one being leia would be dead since she was on the planet when the death star was about to fire and was saved by luke hitting the target shaft.surprised nobody mentions this on the reviews.
The Alternate Star Wars Universe - A New Hope.......2007-05-05
OK imagine if Luke Skywalker's torpedo did not explode as he shot at the Death Star's exhaust port, what would have happened next? That is a very intriguing question, and here is one course that history could have taken, one where Leia is kidnapped and brainwashed by Darth Vader and The Emperor; where Han Solo takes Luke to Dagobah to train for years to become a Jedi Knight by wise Yoda. Han and Luke go to Coruscant to rescue Leia and confront the Emperor. Oh, and Yoda gets back in the fight as he takes on Grand Moff Tarkin and the Death Star. This is a good, interesting, highly entertaining story that examines what if, without compromising the core of the characters that were in the original movies.
A great idea, decently implemented.......2007-03-27
I love the idea behind Star Wars: Infinities, and this volume in the series is pretty good. I've not read the Infinities: Return of the Jedi (Dark Horse Star Wars Collection) volume as of this writing, but the The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars: Infinities) version is quite a bit better than the ANH volume. This volume feels rushed, story-wise, and Al Rio's graphic storytelling is choppy and tough to follow at times. Still, the overall story is a fun one, with a Leia broken and dispirited after the destruction of the Rebel Base at Yavin, mentored by Darth Vader under the supervision of the Emperor, who withholds the true nature of their relationship from them. Quite fun, and fairly well done.
Fascinating and thought provoking.......2006-10-17
"What if?" moments always make for great entertainment, no matter what the situation or the story. The chance to retell a story that has always been established, except with a new twist or two, can lead to great stories and situations, and with Star wars infinities: A new hope, the famous space saga gets the same treatement.
The premise behind the infinities label is that one single event is changed, and then go to see what happens after that. In a new hope, the change is simple, but drastic: Luke fails to destory the death star. With the famous scene now ireversably altered, the story goes off in a completely new direction. The death star destroys the rebel base, the rebellion itself is destroyed and defeated for good, and princes Leia is taken captive by Darth Vader. Luke, Chewie, and Han are on thier own, facing a bleak future without hope.
The story and the idea behind it is fascinating, and reading the comic is supremly rewarding. Each new page brings us new situations and a fresh and unique look at our charachters and how they would react in new situations. And thankfully, it unfolds with the exact same sense of excitment and wonder that Star wars does when it's at it's best. The story has twists and turns, comedy (especially when Han asks Chewie, "Who's he(luke)talking to?"), and great moments of "Wow". Yoda's finalie in paticular, is nothing short of amazing.
While any venture into this kind of territory is risky, the result is well worth it in this infinities story. The artwork is good, and coupled with a great story, this is one comic that all star wars fans should find lots of enjoyment in.
A New Star Wars Story.......2005-08-09
This is the Star Wars like you never read before
With this Expanded Universe Graphic novels you can take the chance to visualize an "what if...." Ending with a new and endless possibilities.
In this version of ANH the Death Star didn't explode cause the torpedo didn't work, try to imagine the rest of the story. Well instead read it here!!!!!
Book Description
People have honest doubts and questions about God that deserve solid answers. How do we explain the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a way the 'man on the street' will understand? Ray Pritchard does exactly that in his compelling new book, An Anchor for the Soul. With doubters, seekers, and skeptics in mind, Pastor Pritchard writes in simple language, using limited Scripture references. In a clear, straightforward presentation, he answers questions such as: What is God like? How can I know Him? Who is Jesus and what did He do? What does it mean to be a Christian? Through stories and illustrations, Pastor Pritchard very personally yet gently challenges his readers with the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to Read.......2006-07-10
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was easy to read and a refresher for what I already knew to be true. I plan to use it as a witnessing tool and to give copies to family and friends that are not saved because it provides the basic concepts in a nonthreatening way.
truely an anchor for the soul.......2005-09-08
extremely good for outreach and to clearly explain our relationship to God .Excellent for small group study.
Lost At Sea.......2005-07-04
Where did I come from? Where am I going? Why am I here? Who was Jesus and what does he have to do with me?
These are some of the questions Pastor Ray Pritchard has set out to answer in his book, An Anchor For The Soul. He's done a good job. There are very few actual Biblical quotes here but his book is firmly rooted in the Gospel of Christ. He makes his points clearly and concisely and his book is a pleasure to read.
For the newcomer, the curious soul wondering what it's all about, An Anchor For The Soul serves as a wonderful introduction to the world of Christianity. For the old hand, the one who's been around the church a few times, this book serves as a reminder of what it all means.
I found wisdom and enlightenment in the pages of this book. This book does not have all the answers but it will point you in the right direction. If you find yourself lost and confused, give this book a chance. You'll be glad you did.
Excellent Book For Seekers & Christians Alike!.......2002-09-08
First off, I'm a pastor in Chicago. Ray Pritchard is my senior pastor(I don't work for him; I minister at a nearby college). I've enjoyed his sermons for almost 3 & 1/2 years now. So I'm a bit partial to him.
With that said, let me say that this is the first book by Dr. Pritchard that I've actually read. It's very down to earth, clear, and easy to read. It took me all of 3 days to finish it(it's only 130 pages long).
Dr. Pritchard basically tells us that we're sinners, why we're sinners, why we can't save ourselves, and why we need a savior. But most importantly, he tells us what to do to get saved and to find salvation. He doesn't browbeat the reader into submission or to his ideas. But he lovingly explains all that I've mentioned above. And he proves everything he says in this book.
This book would be an excellent gift for anyone and everyone you know that doesn't know Jesus personally. Amen to Dr. Pritchard & this book!!!
Fresh Start Motivator.......2000-11-21
An Anchor for the Soul is a primer in helping seekers and new believers capture the essence of new life in Jesus Christ. We use it at our church as part of a Fresh Start Packet for new believers and seekers. It is scripturally based and presents a great help for those seeking to grow in Jesus Christ. It also gives hope to those who are looking for an anchor to base their life upon in a world desperately looking for answers to the key questions of life. It is easy reading, but compelling. I highly recommend this little book as a means of telling the Good News that can only be found in Jesus Christ.

The images and words in this beautifully constructed book are tools in building hope through difficult loss. Covered are the loss of someone who has died, the loss of health, relationship endings, career changes or job loss and family stage changes. I have it opened on my desk to different pages that fit different days, where I might want to encourage someone or be encouraged. The photographs are truly poetry in and of itself, blending beautifully with the words.
The perfect gift for the toughest of times.......2005-10-25
I've always struggled with what to say to someone when they lose a loved one. And sending a card always seemed so inadequate for such a tough situation.
Then I saw "Rays of Hope." From the moment I laid eyes on this, I knew it was special. It literally invited me to pick it up and once I did, I couldn't put it down. The beautiful photographs warmed my heart and the poetry warmed my spirit.
I knew immediately that I wanted to give it to my friends and their families when a loved one passed on. I bought five copies right away. I'll be back for more.
Book Description
While prior books on the battle to capture Wilmington, North Carolina, have focused solely on the epic struggles for Fort Fisher, in many respects this was just the beginning of the campaign. In addition to complete coverage (with significant new information) of both battles for Fort Fisher, The Wilmington Campaign includes the first detailed examination of the attack and defense of Fort Anderson. It also features blow-by-blow accounts of the defense of the Sugar Loaf Line and of the operations of Federal warships on the Cape Fear River. This masterpiece of military history proves yet again that there is still much to be learned about the American Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Superb, expansive and detailed coverage of the entire campaign........2006-11-17
Chris Fonvielle has provided the definitive work on the Wilmington Campaign from beginning to end. "Last Rays of Departing Hope" is a model for how to properly cover such an extensive campaign. Every action of the campaign is covered. The maps are excellent and plentiful, and orders of battle are provided for all of the major actions. Gun emplacements are detailed. The naval vessels, commanders and gun counts are also provided. The writing is fluid and weaves in participant accounts. The author has maintained an objective tone throughout.
The major phases of combat covered are: 1st Fort Fisher, 2nd Fort Fisher, attempts at Sugar Loaf, Fort Anderson, Town Creek, and Forks Road. The powder boat experiment/fiasco is discussed in detail.
Wilmington was the premiere blockade running port of the Confederacy and was Lee's final source of supply. It was protected by a large and powerful earthen fort, Fort Fisher. The assaults on Fort Fisher provide fascinating examples of both how combined operations can succeed and how they can fail. In the first attack numerous problems plagued the Union assault: poor cooperation and lack of coordination by Butler and Porter, slow transport and bad weather that allowed the defenders to prepare for the onslaught, poor intelligence about the two sided nature of the structure, inexcusable inefficacy of the massive naval bombardment (shooting at flags instead of dismounting guns), as well as timid army commanders who failed to exploit Curtis' recognition of the fort's vulnerability. While Butler received most of the blame (deservedly in many instances), Porter's failures were as severe or even more detrimental to the enterprise.
CSA district commander Bragg had done little to aid the defense of the fort, and left it largely on its own. Fortunately for him, the attackers defeated themselves. Porter would learn from his mistakes, Bragg would not. For the next assault Porter cooperated fully with General Terry who replaced the disgraced Butler. The navy bombardment focused on the land face of the fort, disabling nearly every piece mounted along the parapet. Porter coordinated the end of the land face bombardment with the army assault and shifted his fire to the sea face. Even so the assault was a close run thing. Had Bragg provided prompt reinforcement, or attacked with Hoke's force to the north, then the initial assault would most likely have been repelled, resulting in difficult siege operations to reduce the fort.
Fortunately for the Federals, Bragg and Hoke did nothing of consequence to support the fort's defenders, instead remaining passive as the defenders were overrun. Union general Adelbert Ames' sulking timidity nearly snatched defeat from victory by failing to aggressively follow up the advantage that Col. Curtis had obtained. Commanding General Terry appreciated Curtis' correct judgement and supported Ames' subordinate at critical junctures. The heavily outnumbered defenders were defeated.
The narrative does not end here as the town was not yet taken. Schofield was assigned command of the new Federal district and brought his corps to bear on both sides of the river. Hoke was able to entrench on the east of the river and prevent assault from that direction. The Federals made a push on the west bank of the river. CSA Gen. Hagood at Fort Anderson failed to properly counter a flanking move and was forced to withdraw to save his command. U.S. Brig. Gen. Cox aggressively followed up and after yet another flanking maneuver at Town Creek drove Hagood back into Wilmington. The rebels were forced to abandon the defense of the city and withdraw.
Whiting, Lamb, Curtis, Terry, and Cox emerge as heroes for their respective causes; Bragg, Ames, Butler, Hoke (and perhaps Hagood) as goats. Porter spends time in both camps but ends his tour with resounding success.
An Excellent Summary of the Wilmington Campaign!.......2005-07-12
Why can't more Civil War titles be written like this: an interesting and smooth flowing narrative, sufficient number of high quality maps, ample photographs, and anecdotes of officer and enlisted participants?
In my humble opinion, Fonvielle has written what I believe to be one of the best Civil War campaign studies, period! His narrative is simple without being simplistic, maps of outstanding quality and plenty of them, and ample illustrations and photos of the fort, participants, and the area around Wilmington NC.
Except for a few years living in Virginia while serving in the Air Force, I have spent my life in North Carolina and have often visited the Wilmington and Fort Fisher area. Fonvielle's title will serve as an excellent resource on my next visit and is invaluable to those who want to know more about what happened in the Wilmington area after the fall of Fort Fisher.
While reading both Fonvielle's and Gragg's accounts of Fort Fisher, I often pondered: what would have happened if General Bragg was more aggressive in his defense of Fort Fisher by ordering a larger portion of Hoke's division to defend the fort instead of staying put at Sugar Loaf? Indeed, this is often the true mark of an outstanding Civil War book: pondering the "what ifs" of the war and how a change in a decision could have affected the war's length or outcome.
Fonvielle's book has hit the mark and is highly recommended. Read and enjoy!
Excellent history of an obscure Civil War Campaign.......2002-09-20
The Civil War had many campaigns, and numerous battles. Most of them have been chronicled at one time or another. The battle of Fort Fisher, in North Carolina near Wilmington, was wonderfully written about a decade ago in Confederate Goliath by noted historian Rod Gragg. Gragg's book however, finishes with the end of the battle, and has nothing or next to it to say about the ensuing campaign to capture the city of Wilmington itself. The campaign as a whole is the subject of Chris Fonvielle's book, which has a larger scope than Gragg's excellent work, and is equally skilled.
Fonvielle is a southerner, and was a resident of Wilmington at the time the book was written. Since I had just finished another book that was originally published by Savas publishing (Last Chance for Victory) and I had hacked it to pieces here as unreasonably pro-Confederate, I was somewhat apprehensive when I started this book. No worries, Fonvielle is balanced, forthright, and very careful with the issues and participants on both sides. The result is a wonderful depiction of the campaign and battle as they occurred, with a number of wonderful anecdotes. The author also does a masterful job of depicting the strategic context of the campaign and battle, and their impact on the war's last phase.
I've read a number of books on the Civil War. This one has excellent maps and illustrations, is well-thought-out and concise, without being either cursory or overly brief, and is well-documented. I would recommend this book to any Civil War buff.
The Civil War History of Wilmington finally written.......2001-03-10
This is history written right. From the details of the major battles for Fort Fisher, the defense of Fort Anderson, right down to the smaller actions around this important port city, the author covers all. Being a student of Maj. General W.H.C. Whiting, I was amazed to see the only known, full length photo of him, published for the first time. The maps are wonderful, especially the fold outs. Written portraits of all the players are included in the text, without bias. The author is a native of Wilmington, and his love for the area shows with this work. 130+ years after the final battles of the war were fought, Wilmington's story is told.
The Definitive History of the Wilmington Campaign.......1999-03-16
Too many books about Wilmington end with the fall of Fort Fisher. Chris Fonvielle, while dealing fully with those actions, takes that as a beginning, and highlights the entire campaign up the Cape Fear to the fall of Wilmington. (Braxton Bragg fans, if any, take note! Your hero looks very bad here!) Well done, well illustrated, great reading!
Book Description
In 1906 Atlanta, after a summer of inflammatory headlines and accusations of black-on-white sexual assaults, armed white mobs attacked African Americans, resulting in at least twenty-five black fatalities. Atlanta's black residents fought back and repeatedly defended their neighborhoods from white raids. Placing this four-day riot in a broader narrative of twentieth-century race relations in Atlanta, in the South, and in the United States, David Fort Godshalk examines the riot's origins and how memories of this cataclysmic event shaped black and white social and political life for decades to come.
Nationally, the riot radicalized many civil rights leaders, encouraging W. E. B. Du Bois's confrontationist stance and diminishing the accommodationist voice of Booker T. Washington. In Atlanta, fears of continued disorder prompted white civic leaders to seek dialogue with black elites, establishing a rare biracial tradition that convinced mainstream northern whites that racial reconciliation was possible in the South without national intervention. Paired with black fears of renewed violence, however, this interracial cooperation exacerbated black social divisions and repeatedly undermined black social justice movements, leaving the city among the most segregated and socially stratified in the nation. Analyzing the interwoven struggles of men and women, blacks and whites, social outcasts and national powerbrokers, Godshalk illuminates the possibilities and limits of racial understanding and social change in twentieth-century America.

Customer Reviews:
Wow. Beautiful Book........2004-09-18
I have not seen a book like this done about the lighthouses of North Carolina - or any lighthouse book for that matter. It is easy to read as well as a pleasure to look at with all the spectacular photography. This book is not a fluff piece. The information contained in it is interesting and goes beyond the ordinary. It links the history of the lighthouses to the very origins of The Unites States of America. (and the book looks real good on my coffee table, too).

Author Roy Heath continues the adventures of his Guyanan hero, Kwaku (first introduced in Kwaku, or the Man Who Couldn't Keep His Mouth Shut) in his latest book, The Ministry of Hope. As this new volume in the picaresque adventures of Kwaku opens, our hero has fallen from grace: his wife is blind, his twin sons have beaten him up, and his reputation as a healer is under fire when some of his clientele inconveniently die. But Kwaku Cholmondeley is not a quitter. Soon he devises a new plan: he will travel to Georgetown and set himself up as a purveyor of antique chamber pots--an item, he is assured, the tourists will go mad for. The chamber pots prove to be only the McGuffin that will get Kwaku to Georgetown; once there, he manages a meeting with the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Hope and soon finds himself working for the man.
It isn't long before Kwaku realizes that the secretary's reputation as an honest man is vastly overrated. The man steals Kwaku's ideas, sends him on nefarious errands and involves him with all kinds of insidious characters. The moral code under which Kwaku operated in the country doesn't apply in the city, and he faces the age-old dilemma of the city-bound migrant. How Kwaku not only survives his corrupt surroundings but actually transcends them is at the heart of Heath's comic, touching, and aptly named novel.

Roy Heath is a nice writer. He probably made so much unexpected money on "Kwaku" that he thought:"What the heck, let's continue this". Washed out and no good.

Product Description
A Ray of Hope is the true story of a family coping with the tragedy of sexual abuse. Each chapter is told from the alternating perspectives of the husband and the wife, and reveals their journey through the tragedies, heartaches and triumphs of dealing with the husband's sexual addiction. It is intended as a message about the realities of working through sexual abuse, and the potential for healing.
Customer Reviews:
Honest and rare accountability.......2007-08-01
As a therapist to those abused by clergy and others, I have observed the intricacies caused by the chain of sexual trauma. While we continue to determine the vastness of the statistics, both male and female, we seldom go beneath the anger and address the wounding to families. Allan and Mary provide rare and valuable insights into the healing power of love. It's a must read for counselors and pastoral caregivers in all fields, as well as those looking toward closure in their own anguish. Mary Kahl, LCPC, Frederick, MD
Honest and Inspirational.......2007-02-25
My husband and I recently read "A Ray of Hope" and were very encouraged by the story.
Allen and Mary give a breif, but compelling account of the effects of child molestation for the victims, the predator, and the family of the predator. They even discribe the intial molestion of the predator by a respected priest and their later reconciliation. This sounds a bit complex, but when you read the book you will find it clearly presented and helpful in understanding the cycle of child molestation (or any addiction for that matter). This book also offers a window into the largely veiled and often ignored experiences and feelings of a Christian man who has also at times been a child molester.
Even if you have not personally been affected by molestation, you will find that "A Ray of Hope" offers a perspective that is fascinating to read, insightful and encouraging. After reading this book I felt inspired to persevere through some of my own difficult life situations with hope.
(We left the book lying around the house and a friend of ours picked it up and read a few pages. He was so intrigued that he asked if he could borrow the book. It is that interesting!)
Surprising Love Story!.......2007-01-18
Wow! I truly appreciate the candor with which the authors share their tragic experience. It was such an eye-opening look at the devastating causes and effects of the cyclic nature of abuse. Unlike most books on the subject, having the perspectives of all of those who are hurt from the ravages of abuse was particularly helpful and insightful.
And through it all to see that there can be a "Ray of Hope" in the midst of such tragedy is a deep encouragement!
