In communicating and trying to figure out what it is men want, sometimes it's necessary to go directly to the source: men! Michelle McKinney Hammond has done that in her latest book, 101 WAYS TO GET AND KEEP HIS ATTENTION. She has interviewed 100 men of various ages, races, backgrounds, and socioeconomic status to find out exactly what it is they look for in a woman; especially the one they will make their wife. Using their answers and her Christian background, Ms. Hammond has created a step-by-step guide for women interested in getting inside a man's heart, while simultaneously making themselves better people.

Although the book is spiritually based with scriptures and guidance from God's teachings, it is also broken down into the basics of what most men agree attracts them to women. Using the five senses as the focus, this book is indeed a repository of information for becoming the woman who not only interests a man, but also one who is pleasing to God. It's no big secret that men enjoy the physical appearance of women, but 101 WAYS TO GET AND KEEP HIS ATTENTION delves a bit deeper into the man's psyche and shows his vulnerability, his desire for love, affection, gentleness, and to be appreciated. It further details how our moods, tone, and even touch can make or break his spirit. Great Survery Book.......2004-08-08

I have enjoyed all of Hammond's book to date! Through her writings, she has guided me on finding my dream man, the right ways, which is THE LORD WAY! I have learned so much, I wished I had read her books years ago, it would have saved me so much heartche.

I would have gave this book 5 stars (like I have on her other books), but this is a survey book. Not that their is anything wrong with survey books, but this book seems to be repetative of her other books.

Not Just for Christians........................2003-11-13

This is the second book I have read by Ms. Hammond and I wasn't disappointed at all. In fact I read it in one day. This book is not just for single/married christian women but for any woman who is concerned about how she may or may not appear to the opposite sex or let alone to others as a whole. I recommend this book to all woman if for nothing else as a guide for self examination. Are you projecting the woman that you want others to see? Are you being and displaying the best in order to attract Gods best? Now that's a thought! Ms Hammond is only aiding us ladies with a 101 check list of things to enhance our relationships whether it be with your man or the MAN (God). Read, enjoy, and be blessed.

A single woman CAN be an authority on Getting and Keeping!.......2003-10-29

Okay, firstly, I'd like to thank the reviewer who believes that because Michelle has never been married, she may not be an authority on how to get and keep a man, or the attention of a man. You encouraged me to see just how fast I could buy and read yet another one of Michelle's awesome pieces. The book is classic "Michelle," full of Godly, sound, tried, tested and true advice. I highly recommend it. It is different and that makes it useful and a great, quick read. If you are (or even if you're not) a studier of God's word, you should know that there IS worthy advice according to scripture found in the Song of Solomon, Proverbs and other books of the bible. Michelle reflects that in this book. Buy it! ...NOW: Perhaps some women have been gifted with the patience and wisdom to wait on the RIGHT man, not willing to accept sorry substitutes, no matter how fine, rich or available they may seem. God has the right ONE for all of us. There was a time when I, too questioned Michelle's single status..I'm also single, and would like to have my husband, but in GOD's sovereign time. She is a stunning, intelligent, talented, annointed sister and yes, it puzzles me why God hasn't given her a mate yet. But while she is waiting, you'd be wise to follow the example and teaching that she offers freely. Well, actually for $8.99 plus shipping in this case. Informative book, pretty deep insight into how NA bows and arrows were made, used, decorated, etc. Some good photos, descriptions, worth the money and read. I keep mine for reference, as it has loads of specific info in the book. Advanced bowyers would likely not like the book, folks who are just starting or want to learn the NA way that these things were done will like it.

I'm the author of the book, and appreciate the criticisms and praises. I *would* like to let folks know that I wrote this book when I was 19 years young, and had a lot to learn. I wrote it in response to a very bad, and misinformative book that was considered the 'bible' of indigenous archery books at the time. Now, there are many books available on this wonderful subject.
Jim Hamm's book, video, and classes are invaluable. So is TM Hamilton's book, and DC Waldorf as well.

The other title of the same author "making arrows the old way" has its text already fully printed within "making indian bows and arrows the old way". Amazon gave me a discount so I could get both titles at once, and I end up having twice the same text and pictures on arrows... Do not do like me, buy only this title, not the arrow one. Interesting read, not-so-good theology.......2007-08-14

I seem some value in this, but agree with the reviewer who cautioned against taking it out of context. It seems people are drawn to the ritual of the Jesus Prayer itself, without regard for Jesus' teachings. Jesus said the most important commandment is to love God with all your heart, your soul and your mind. I think this prayer can help you achieve that to some degree. However, he said a second commandment is equally important, to love your neighbor as yourself. This prayer puts all the focus inward on the self, maybe some upward toward God, and absolutely none toward loving your neighbor. Several times in the book, the pilgrim actively avoids contact with others so that he can isolate himself and focus on his prayer. Several people are quite kind to him in the process, and although he shows gratitude to them, he does little to help others and make the world around him better, which Jesus clearly calls us to do. All that said, I do think it is an interesting read and can promote healthy spiritual debate and discussion.

Introduction:

A hidden spiritual treasure worthy of contemplation and meditation for any Christian who wants to grow closer to the heart and life of Jesus.

While reading this book, I realized that this spiritual devotional is a gem on the cultural and timeless level as John Bunyan's classic "The Pilgrim's Progress" (a favorite with Protestants) or Thomas a Kempis' classic "The Imitation of Christ" or Brother Lawrence's "The Practice of the Presence of God"(well known by Roman-Catholics). Historically, the eastern church (Ortodoxy) is one whose theology is synonymous with mysticism, something that comes across in "The Way of the Pilgrim" thru the Jesus Prayer and Philokalia. The western church (Catholic and Protestant) emphasis is more on systemic theology and doctrinal formulations.

Author:
The author is unknown. Father Thomas Hopko (from famous Orthodox Seminary St. Vladimir in New York), who write the forward, states that "whatever the origin and intention of the anonymous author's fascinating story" the pilgrim's way "affirms first of all that the source, goal and content of human life is ... the living God Himself."

Content:
The spiritual way of this pilgrim tells us "that life is communion with God ... a ceaseless prayer in pursuit of God and communion with him." It also tells us that "Jesus Christ is this life."

The pilgrimage starts with an honest question: "What does it mean to pray without ceasing?" (as the pilgrim had heard during Liturgy; 1 Thes. 5:17, Eph. 6:18, 1 Tim. 2:18). He searches long for an answer to his questions of "how one is to pray unceasingly and what is the nature of this sort of prayer."

He travels with a Bible that is very dear to him (which he had been reading from early childhood) and a sack of dried bread crumbs and some water. Once he learns of the "Jesus Prayer" that the holy Church Fathers had written about, he realizes that "the prayer began to move of its own accord from my lips into my heart." He states that "calling on the name of Jesus now filled my days with joys" and everytime a spirit of sorrow, fatigue, doubt came over him, repeating "the Jesus Prayer" helps him to turn his mind and heart to God and fills him with divine peace and joy. The pilgrim also learns and acquires the Philokalia, a collection of deep spiritual writings from the Christians of the East. Thus the Pilgrim's progress is a life of reading the Bible, having a life of prayer, and contemplating on the spiritual gems found in the Philokalia.

Conclusion:
If you believe that "we are all pilgrims on a journey to God", as the forward to "The Way of the Pilgrim" states, than your spiritual life will be enriched by this Christian classic.

Like most people, I started reading this after "Franny and Zooey". What I really liked about this book is its simplicity. It stars a simple peasant who gives up all of his posessions to worship Jesus, after all.

But more than that, the writing sytle is very warm and simple. It is written in first person. Simple thoughts with a lot of meaning, I think.

For instance the peasant writes about how he feels joy when he first begins the Jesus prayer, but remembers when he was warned by someone in the church not to be fooled, because when someone starts the Jesus prayer they're overwhelmed with superficial emotions. That's the part that has really stayed with me, for some reason. It resonated with me so well because well, I think we all know what that's like; getting all excited for something and thinking it's going to be a major passion in your life and then it turns out it doesn't matter much in a month.

Now, I must admit I was tempted to follow the jesus prayer (this was before I decided to practice Judaism) and it is heart warming. I think we should all recite the Jesus Prayer; we will be more kind hearted like the peasant. That's what I got from this book.

an amazing find.......2006-05-24

I first came across a copy of the Way of a Pilgrim when wandering in India in 1972. Someone had left the book in a deserted house in Goa on a shelf along with a stack of onions. Many thanks to whoever that was. The onions were nourishing to the body. But the book was an introduction to a world of prayer of which I had no previous knowledge. Whoever the Pilgrim was, his yearning had evidently been answered and he was truly 'on the way'.

A Very Spiritual Enlightening Story.......2005-09-30

I have read this book twice....I especially like French's translation. It opens an aspect of the Christian Life which is not delt with in Western Christian thought or spiritual disciplian. It opens an aspect of Christianity which I found very meaningful and powerful. The book was a true blessing.

Anyone who has children, cares about how we educate them, proposes to teach, MUST meet Rafe Esquith. Achieving his level of dedication may be impossible for most, hut he can inspire us all to greater performance. His imaginative insights to helping fifth graders to new levels of self-esteem and real accomplishment is astonishing. Unafraid of bureaucracy, indeed scornful of it, he has managed to do things most classroom teachers only dream of. In addition to breaking old molds, he offers considerable hope, as he clearly tells us that the fault is not in the children, but in ourselves.

This is a must read for any classroom teacher. Mr. Esquith has many insights and ideas that help the classroom teacher. Some of it you may have heard before but it is a good reminder of what great teachers do or can do for their students.

Big on image, low on facts.......2007-08-03

Yes, this man is a dedicated teacher. No, his methods are not the wave of the future for educational reform or methods that would often work elsewhere. The writer skews the perspective of this book (which is very self-serving and slanted towards his own ego) by describing his inner-city school as "The Jungle" (ooh, scary) and his students as underprivileged inner city kids. Actually they are mostly Asian and Latino immigrant students. As a successful teacher of underprivileged children myself, I can tell you that it is relatively easy to teach students from immigrant families, even those just barely learning English, because their families came to this country for more opportunity and are usually highly motivated to succeed. The true underprivileged and most challenging students are those whose impoverished families have lived in American housing projects for generations, have little faith left in the system and are often unmotivated as students and parents. Families from this demographic are conspicuously absent from this model teacher's class. This is an important distinction to make, because when when the author touts himself as a "hero" and portrays himself as an expert on inner-city education, all too often people with less knowledge about the educational system will be awestruck and believe everything he says. There are many dedicated teachers in this country who use more sustainable methods of instruction and who are valiantly struggling with much more challenging students than the ones in this book.

Get Ron Clark's Essential 55 instead........2007-07-08

I felt that from the moment i started reading this book, it should have been named "All About Rafe". He makes mention at the beginning of this book how he wanted to be known as the best teacher whenever he walks down the street. His wife-to-be lets him know eventually that it's really moronic to think that way. Although he says this changed him, from the cover to the end of the book, it's obvious that his original mission never really changed.

As a new teacher, that disgusts me. In the 3 years I have taught, I have cultivated very successful readers and outstanding citizens in my own "jungle"(Newark, NJ). I have had my share of losses as well, that's life. However, whenever teachers/administrators compliment me on my classroom management or test scores, I give all the credit to my kids(they WANT to do well, and behave well, I just steer them the proper way by giving a consistent, caring adult to believe in.) All I've ever asked of them in return is to focus on becoming the best they can be.

All teachers should be selfless. We are cultivating the next generation of this Earth, not attempting to break into Hollywood. I'm disappointed that a teacher the caliber of Mr. Esquith is such a narcissist.

Could have been better.......2007-04-07

This is a very well written book and is full of details about Sandy Weill but the entire book plays on him being an undertrodden jew, but he fails to take into account that you don't have to be jewish to be the underdog - take Frank Lowrys Pushing the Limits he was jewish lived in the ghetto and there was not one mention that he was a victim he just got on with life and made the best of it. Again this is a very good book just read past the constant comments about how he was always being victimised jew.

Another potential title for this book is "Jew-boy from Brooklyn done good". This story does a great job demonstrating how Sandy Weill fought his way to the top, battled anti-semitism, encouraged diversity, and reached a level of success that few can compare to. An excellent read and interesting history lesson of Wall Street during its technology expansion phase.

This book could be considered a corner stone foundation marker in understanding what makes people relevant, even when they are not.

Sandy Weill shows how consistentcy and planning directed to delivering real value for others will result in producing positive results. Monica Langley describes well how a strong basis in fundamental value wins over adversity and fills in a vacume.

The book does a good job in reflecting the transition from family to business and the process of creating an icon that Sandy Weill became with his challenges as a broker, American Express, Travelers and Citibank. As a reader, you can see how these companies needed Sandy's pivotal instincts to solve their problems and evolve.

As a person used to work in Wall Street and live now in China, I read the Chinese version of this book. It was as if I lived, breathed, angered, and cheered with Weill, Dimon, Prince.... One of the best books about wall street of past 10 years. I ordered this book in English and will read it again, for at least once.

Once, a Lutheran pastor went up to an author (who's also an ex-monk who spent many hours in monastic choir and Latin chant) and asked, how could one have a personal relationship with God in prayer when all was set and programmed, all was ritual, formal, and liturgical?? This author later wrote in his memoirs,

"I have never, ever, thought that Latin chant opposes personal prayer. It is simply personal prayer as part of a total community at prayer. It helps you to distinguish, in prayer, between human echo and divine response, between your own will set to sound and the divine will that allegedly transcends it. As a simple analogy: Does singing the national anthem communally enlarge or diminish personal and individual patriotism??"

It's amazing how much you can learn from people who've been deemed outcasts, super-deviants and heretics from your community. I suspect there are Christians who wouldn't touch the works of John Dominic Crossan with a 10-foot pole.

But after reading A Long Way From Tipperary: What A Former Irish Monk Discovered In His Search For The Truth, whilst I'm nowhere near agreeing with his views on the historical Jesus, I can identify with his struggles, his doubts, his pain (I can almost weep with him over the loss of his first wife).

I see a man who needs the love of Jesus Christ, yet also one I can learn from tremendously (even N.T. Wright has celebrated Crossan's genius; see the opening remarks in his chapter on Crossan in Jesus & The Victory of God). If nothing else, Crossan's wit-filled prose brings literary delight which one finds rare in evangelical works. For example:

"If, in fact, you want a parent metaphor for God, I think father is much more appropriate than mother. It is the mother who is publicly knowable, visibly provable, and legally certifiable. You do not need faith to know a mother. You need faith to know a father, because he is known only on the mother's word and sometimes not even then.?" (p.37)

Whilst evangelicals rightly ought to warn the community of the problems in Crossan's writings, we would do well to humble ourselves and learn from our enemies? (wouldn't we want them to learn from us, too?). Try this sharp observation on the Catholic-Protestant schism:

"It is the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, during which Catholicism and Protestantism forced each other into opposite extremes (faith or works, Bible or tradition, individual or community, real or symbolic, etc. or etc.)in that separation within Christianity, Catholicism lost any internal but loyal opposition, any sternly self-critical voice from within. In that separation, Protestantism lost anything to protest against save itself and has continued to fracture into every increasing diversity.?" (p.72, emphasis mine)

Perhaps we need (or God has allowed? or predestined?? [grin]) writers like Crossan, the quintessential postmodern Biblical scholar, drawing his inspiration from, among others, the work of Jacques Derrida, to shake us into seeing our own problems, to look closer at our sacred cows.

And one day Crossan was at a book-signing event, someone came up to him and said, "My pastor told me not to come here tonight because you are even to the left of Marcus Borg.? Crossan replied,

"Give your pastor my best regards and tell him that is the good news. The bad news is that both Borg and me are to the right of Jesus. And worse still, if he will recall Psalm 110, Jesus is to the right of God."

An autobiography by a well-known NT scholar.......2007-02-23

Rather disappointed with this book. Bought it at the local Borders and found its prose rushed; was the copyeditor asleep? I found long stretches rather tedious, not enhanced by the author's strong ego, which lacks discernment about what the reader might find engaging and what s/he might not. I appreciate much of Crossan's work, such as In Search of Paul, and this one has many good paragraphs. But the whole work never quite seems to come together.

What kind of Christian are you?.......2006-07-22

If you want Jesus to be what you need, avoid this book. If you want to learn about the historical Jesus, read Crossan. This book is more accessible than some of this others; but it presumes some familiarity with his other works which should, I think, come first. Then read this one by all means.

The journey of an Irish monk.......2005-06-19

Before I read this memoir, the only other insight I had of Crossan was from "Excavating Jesus", a book he and Reed collaborated on. Many times I would pause during a particular chapter and ask "Why does Crossan think that?" and I found many of my answers in "A Long Way from Tipperary." This memoir describes how Crossan's upbringining contributed to his analysis of the historical Jesus. It is the genuinity and extreme honesty with which Crossan speaks that makes this memoir truly memorable. I especially liked the parts when Crossan would describe an event in his life and compare it to the life of Jesus and ask how it influenced his conclusions on Jesus- I would have liked to see more of this for it was truly insightful. I also woudl have liked to see more of discussion on his faith in God- he makes the point that he doenst use human logic to prove God's existence yet doenst really seem to describe how he arrived at his conclusion. Overall a great read into a fascinating mind.

A Long Way From Tipperary: A Memoir by John Dominic Crossan (2000)

Dom Crossan, the world's leading expert and best-selling author on the historical Jesus, has written a witty, hearfelt and easy reading (about 200 pages - you can finish it in an afternoon) memoir of his remarkable life. From the Prologue:

"This book is about a series of transitions, from Ireland to America, from priesthood to marriage, from monastery to university, and from academic scholar to public intellectual. It is especially about the transition from a very traditional Roman Catholic faith...to a self-conscious and self-critical Roman Catholic faith for the next [century]."

Born in 1934 in County Kildare, Ireland to parents of modest means, he entered a monastery at sixteen and remained in the priesthood for some nineteen years, most of which was spent as a professor in seminary. After leaving the priesthood to get married, Crossan taught at DePaul University for nearly twenty years. His memoir is a charming recollection of the very different worlds along his life's journey - interspersed with reminiscences of how each episode shaped his thinking.

Crossan, co-founder of the (in)famous Jesus Seminar, has been a public voice proclaiming the need for Christians to revitalize their tradition. Again from the Prologue:

"After a decade of interviews in newspapers and magazines, discussions on radio and television, lectures in parishes and seminaries, colleges and universities, I now recognize a group...who claim a center of the road between secularism and fundamentalism. They are also dissatisfied, disappointed, or even disgusted with Classical Christianity and their denominational tradition...They do not want to invent or join a new age, but to reclaim and redeem an ancient one. They do not want to settle for a generic-brand religion, but to re-discover their own specific and particular roots. But they know now that these roots must be in a renewed Christianity that has purged itself of rationalism, fundamentalism, and literalism, whether of book, tradition, community, or leader. I did not set out to speak to those people, because I did not know they existed until about 80 percent of my mail told me they did."

In the final pages of his memoir, he says:

"In conclusion, this is what I have learned between Ireland and America, monastery and university, priesthood and marriage, scholarship and public discourse. I have learned that God is more radical than we can ever imagine, that a divine utopia on this earth is more subversive than we can ever accept..."

John Dominic Crossan is a monumental figure in the reformation of the Christian tradition underway in the world today. A man of deep faith, profound intellect, and searing vision, this memoir provides a window into the humble origins and very human journey of a great modern sage. His dry Irish wit is ever present, his writing style is clear and conversational and you finish the book with the feeling that you now "know the man". That's what a memoir is all about.

Great program for ADHD. However, you need to do the whole program, as it is laid out in the book. Its not the kind of thing you can take one worksheet out of and have it make sense...the introductory stuff is important. But I think it could work really well with ADHD kids...I am going to try it this summer in my kids group. Reccomended.

Great for teachers!.......2005-10-19

This book is written with 3rd and 4th grade classes in mind as the audience. I am using it with a third grade class. We are doing 1 lesson per week. It is GREAT! The activities are very engaging and really drive the point home. Kids can relate to the idea of using a remote control, so it is motivating for them to think of using it on themselves. The cues are great ideas for teachers to use instead of always saying the same things to kids who aren't paying attention. The activities are easy to create and don't take a lot of extra time or preparation. All kids can relate to Hunter, both those with ADHD and those without! After all, don't we all need a little help to pay attention from time to time!

East Christianity's version of the West's John Bunyan classic - "The Pilgrim's Progress".......2006-12-25

Introduction:

A hidden spiritual treasure worthy of contemplation and meditation for any Christian who wants to grow closer to the heart and life of Jesus.

While reading this book, I realized that this spiritual devotional is a gem on the cultural and timeless level as John Bunyan's classic "The Pilgrim's Progress" (a favorite with Protestants) or Thomas a Kempis' classic "The Imitation of Christ" or Brother Lawrence's "The Practice of the Presence of God"(well known by Roman-Catholics). Historically, the eastern church (Ortodoxy) is one whose theology is synonymous with mysticism, something that comes across in "The Way of the Pilgrim" thru the Jesus Prayer and Philokalia. The western church (Catholic and Protestant) emphasis is more on systemic theology and doctrinal formulations.

Author:
The author is unknown. Father Thomas Hopko (from famous Orthodox Seminary St. Vladimir in New York), who write the forward, states that "whatever the origin and intention of the anonymous author's fascinating story" the pilgrim's way "affirms first of all that the source, goal and content of human life is ... the living God Himself."

Content:
The spiritual way of this pilgrim tells us "that life is communion with God ... a ceaseless prayer in pursuit of God and communion with him." It also tells us that "Jesus Christ is this life."

The pilgrimage starts with an honest question: "What does it mean to pray without ceasing?" (as the pilgrim had heard during Liturgy; 1 Thes. 5:17, Eph. 6:18, 1 Tim. 2:18). He searches long for an answer to his questions of "how one is to pray unceasingly and what is the nature of this sort of prayer."

He travels with a Bible that is very dear to him (which he had been reading from early childhood) and a sack of dried bread crumbs and some water. Once he learns of the "Jesus Prayer" that the holy Church Fathers had written about, he realizes that "the prayer began to move of its own accord from my lips into my heart." He states that "calling on the name of Jesus now filled my days with joys" and everytime a spirit of sorrow, fatigue, doubt came over him, repeating "the Jesus Prayer" helps him to turn his mind and heart to God and fills him with divine peace and joy. The pilgrim also learns and acquires the Philokalia, a collection of deep spiritual writings from the Christians of the East. Thus the Pilgrim's progress is a life of reading the Bible, having a life of prayer, and contemplating on the spiritual gems found in the Philokalia.

Conclusion:
If you believe that "we are all pilgrims on a journey to God", as the forward to "The Way of the Pilgrim" states, than your spiritual life will be enriched by this Christian classic.

A classic in the search of how to live the Christian life. The Pilgrim is a young man searching for the meaning of how to pray without ceasing and through that search his life is altered for the better. By way of Pilgrim's search, you will find yourself seeking the same passion for God he does.

Though the book is sadly unknown outside Orthodox Christian circles, it is an enjoyable and inspirational read for Christians of any denominational persuasion. It is also key to understanding Orthodox Christian theology at its roots. To compare it with other works that might be more familiar I think _In His Steps_ (ISBN: 0800786084) by Sheldon comes close. But Pilgrim remains a classic in its own right.
